WICKED NIGHTS (Angels of the Dark 1) by Gena Showalter

WICKED NIGHTS (Angels of the Dark #1) by Gena Showalter

Wicked Nights is the first book ( June 2012 release)  in Gena Showalter’s Angels of the Dark series.  It is a spin off of her Lords of the Underworld series.

Zacharel, whom we first meet in Darkest Seduction (LOTU), is the leader of an army of angels who are in jeopardy of losing their wings.  Their cold, callous ways have them all on the verge of being thrown out of the heavens.  Needless to say, these aren’t your typical angels.

Anabelle Miller has been institutionalized for the last four years of her life.  Accused of the brutal murder of her parents.  No one believes her when she tells them a monster killed her parents.  She endures frequent attacks by demons, that only she can see.  She not only endures demon attacks, but the attention of an unscrupulous doctor inside the institution.

Zacharel and his army are summoned to dispense of a horde of demons who are attacking the institution in which Ana is being held.  When he gives chase to one of the demons, he encounters Anabelle, strapped to a gurney.  He is immediately intrigued with this human, which is something entirely new to him.  Once he witness the unscrupulous doctor’s intentions towards Ana, he decides to rescue her.

Zacharel has suffered such a horrible loss, that he has closed off all emotion to everyone and everything.  He has been alone for centuries, and takes no pleasure for himself. He kills his targets swiftly and moves on.  But, when he takes Ana into his protection, he finds his, literally, cold exterior thawing.  They set out on a journey to find out why Ana is being targeted by demons on a constant basis.  He involves his warrior angels, whom, to say is a motley crew, is an understatement.  Once they discover Demon High Lord, Unforgiveness is the one calling for the attacks, it gets very interesting.  Seems Unforgiveness targeted Ana and bound himself to her.  And the reason for the binding shocks the hell out of you.

Zacharel and Ana’s relationship is a slow, sweet surprise.  Once he realizes how much he loves her, he will stop at nothing to keep her safe and undo what Unforgiveness has done.  One of the reasons Zacharel is on the verge of losing his wings is his callousness towards humans.  Ana changes that.  And ends up saving him.  In the end Zacharel vows to be the leader he needs to be in order to save the members of his army.

I really liked this book.  The battle in the end is not what I expected, but I loved it just the same.  Several of the Lords of the Underworld show up to help, along with a minor goddess and a harpy or two.  Once you find out the loss that Zacharel has suffered, your heart will break.  Ana is very strong and very independent.  And I can’t wait to get to know the other angels.  I can only imagine the hell they’ve been through and can’t wait to see them find their salvation.  I will say, that in my opinion, religion (for lack of a better term), or maybe faith would be a better description, is played on heavily in this book.  It is not thrown in your face, but it is subtly used to force Zacharel to realize the right, true way of things.  There is a lot I would like to tell you about this book but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone.  Like I said, once you realize Unforgiveness’ link, it’s a definite “wow” moment, and the actions played out from there are great!! If you are a fan of the Lords of the Underworld, you will definitely like this book.  If you aren’t a LOTU fan, you’ll like it anyway.  😉

SAVOR ME SLOWLY by Gena Showalter – a Review

SAVOR ME SLOWLY by Gena Showalter

Gena Showalter’s Alien Huntress series has surprised me and I mean that in a very good way. I will be honest and say that of all the book genres, Sci-fi books like space books or futuristic books are deemed to be my least favorite. I think the ideas and some storylines always come out corny and frivolous. Gena Showalter is able to use the concept of aliens and romance together and somehow make it work. I take my hat off for her in that regard. The series is listed under paranormal romance but it felt a little Sci-Fi-ish to me. For those who enjoy forensics and Men in Black, this series is worth reading.

The main couple of Savor Me Slowly is Jaxon Tremain who is an Alien Investigation and Removal agent and Mishka Le’Ace who is half human and half robot who is an undercover operative. The couple meets when Mishka under an executioner alias as ‘Marie’ rescues Jaxon from further torture from a group of aliens who abducted Jaxon. From here it is instant attraction between the two.

Ever since Awaken Me Darkly where Jaxon is introduced, I knew there was an intriguing enigma of a man hidden beneath of the scars and polite exterior of the man. When it comes to his career, Jaxon is a master interrogator who knows how to get answers by any means necessary along with being able to keep his mouth shut no matter what happens to him. The condition in which he is in during his torture is enough to say that the man is courageous, loyal and tough that he can endure. Such lovely traits to a man with honor. Jaxon is a well-mannered man, calm, proper, indifferent and a man with a clean mouth that doesn’t cuss. But underneath it all there is another side to Jaxon. A man who lets his emotions free, cusses and gets sarcastic when crossed, and just moodier…(in a good way moody). He has a hidden alpha-male in him that makes for savage and raw love scenes but he is also tender, slow and considerate in the bedroom as well. This combination is extremely erotic in a hypnotic and captivating way. You can’t help but just be totally entranced.

Mishka Le’Ace is a strong heroine and has likeable traits. What I like the most about Mishka was that she was the perfect balance of bad-ass tough girl and girly-girl. She wasn’t a prissy, whiney and mouthy girl that I find annoying in some girls in other books. What I can say is Mishka reminds me of Destiny from Christine Feehan’s Dark Destiny. She is a warrior of woman, selfless and protective of her man, beautiful, seductive and courageous. Mishka being half-robot is controlled by a sadistic prick of a “handler” where he hands her all these missions she is to complete. If she fails to complete the mission or argues that she doesn’t want to do the mission, her handler has the power to punish her in means of physically hurting her and putting her through heinous training. So many times in her life, she is often forced to kill people she doesn’t want to kill or sleep with men she needs answers from. Half the time, I felt sorry for Mishka but despite it all I like that she wasn’t a bitter and mean woman. Being starved of warmth, love and family in her life, Mishka deep down is a regular woman who desires a normal life. In a nutshell, Mishka is a fighter and lover.

I really enjoyed the love scenes because for starters I felt like the scenes are creative. Jaxon and Mishka do make love or grope each other in a variety of places like in a dark alley, the car and other bedrooms. I also like the variety. Some scenes are hot and savage while some are soft core and romantic. In all the scenes in which Jaxon and Mishka make love, there is so much depth of love and emotions.

Seriously what is not to love about this book? There is a nice touch of Sci-fi being used in a tasteful fashion, action whether you get a girl fist fight or an all-out alien/human brawl, suspense of how the enemy alien are plotting, breath-taking love scenes and awesome characters. While I enjoyed the first 2 books greatly; I already made up my mind that book 3 Savor me Slowly is a huge huge fave!

THE DARKEST SEDUCTION by Gena Showalter-A New Release Review by Vickie

THE DARKEST SEDUCTION by Gene Showalter

THE Darkest Seduction is the ninth book in Gena Showalter’s Lords of the Underworld series. Paris, whose body houses the demon of Promiscuity, has to have sex often to keep up his strength, or he grows weak and will die. His demon emits pheromones and certain scents that make everyone lust after him. The rub? He can only have sex with a person once. Until he meets Sienna, who represents everything he and the Lords despise. She was a Hunter, who has made it their mission to kill the Lords, whom they blame all of the problems of the world.

Paris meets Sienna several books ago, where she is sent in as bait to lure him with his hope of having sex. When Sienna gets close enough, she drugs Paris and he is taken prisoner by the Hunters. After he is held and tortured for a few days, the Hunters realize he is growing weak and send Sienna in to do the deed. What neither of them count on is their instant, albeit, unwanted at the time, attraction to each other. Once they’ve had sex, his strength is restored and he is able to escape, and takes Sienna with him. In a shootout with the Hunters, Sienna is killed (by the Hunters) and Paris is forced to leave her. This is where his obsession with her starts. He soon figures out that his demon, whom he calls Sex, will let him have sex with her again, which has never happened in his long life. Coupled with the fact that Crounus, Titan God, has brought her back from the dead and given her the demon of Wrath, Paris will literally move heaven and earth to find her. Another problem, she’s a ghost and Paris can’t see her. Unfortunately, for me, this obsession has changed Paris a lot. He became addict, addicted to Ambrosia, and became whiny and very violent.

Darkest Seduction starts with Paris in the heavens trying to find any bits of information he can about Sienna. We are introduced to some new characters that give Paris the information he so desperately needs. Viola, minor goddess of the Afterlife and possessor of the demon of Narcissism provides him with what he needs to do in order to be able to see Sienna. He finally finds out that Cronus has taken Sienna to a castle in the Realm of Blood and Shadows, a place that he, Cronus, believes no one else can get to. Cronus has made Sienna believe that she has no other choice than to forget about Paris and go to spy on Galen, leader of the Hunters and possessor of the demon of Hope (yep, Hope is a demon. Who knew?) in order to save her sister Skye and Paris and the Lords and their women. What Sienna doesn’t know is that Cronus has already killed Skye in one of the many plotlines that run through this book.

Zachariel, an angel warrior who works for the One True Deity, plays a big part in trying to cryptically let Sienna know that things are not as they seem. Showalter, no doubt, uses this story to set up her new spin off series for the angels called Angels of the Dark. There is a huge battle at the end where the Lords, backed up by the angel warriors face off against the Titan gods and goddesses, along with Galen and the Hunters. It has been foretold by the All Seeing Eye, who paints what she sees, past and present and future, that Galen will behead Cronus in an epic battle and kill him. When that part ensues, and Galen goes to make the killing blow, Sienna is behind Galen and actually makes the kill herself, which, drum roll please, makes Sienna the new Queen of the Titans. As a result of her being the one to end Cronus, she inherits all of his powers. And, of course, she and Paris have their happily ever after. It was a long road to get there. The other Lords were very suspicious of Sienna and her intentions towards Paris, but in the end, they somewhat accept her.

Another plotline is Kane’s, keeper of the demon of Disaster. He and William were trapped in Hell in the last book, and, although William escaped, Kane didn’t. He was found at one point in this book, but lost again. He is being held by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and we are totally left hanging as to what is going on with him.

I really liked some parts of this book. The scene where Paris & William finally make it to the castle in the Realm of Blood and Shadows is hysterical. Let’s just say, I have a whole new vision of Gargoyles, who are instantly attracted to Paris. We will no doubt see more of Viola and her narcissistic ways, because, in her words, “she is greater than great”. Also, Maddox’s wife, Ashlyn, finally gives birth to the twins, which are half demon, half human. William, of all people, has to deliver them and immediately nicknames them things like Pistol and Shank. The battle scene at the end was great, but it took soooo long to get there. And the fact that Sienna becomes “the boss of everyone” is, in my opinion, a bit of a stretch. A former human Hunter, killed, brought back as a ghost and possessed with a demon……… I guess we’ll see how she handles her new status in future books.

All in all, this was not my favorite. But, it is a necessary read in order to continue the series, but it could have been a little shorter. It sometimes took pages in order to find out the answer to a character’s question. Lots of introspection, etc. With all of that said, I am looking forward to the next book. I don’t know if we know who it’ll be, but my vote is on Kane.
