ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 26, 205

Sometimes it’s not the wolves who pose the danger…

There’s a downside to living in a secret society. Someone has to ensure it remains that way. ‘Bull’ Bulworth is that someone. His current assignment: track a young man who has an unrecognized wolf inside him and eliminate the problem before the truth about Wolvers is exposed to the human world. It’s a simple and straightforward assignment until he meets a woman who makes him think crazy might be contagious.

In her own words, Tommie Bane is nuttier than a pecan tree. There’s a voice in her head telling her she is something other than human, and a creature she swears is running around inside her body. Just when she’s at the lowest point in her weird and nutty life, she meets a man who tells her it’s all real. Should she listen to the voice of reason or to the voice in her head that keeps shouting “Mate”?

What do you have to lose when you’ve already lost your mind? For Tommie, it could be her life

••••••••••••••••••

Wolver’s Rescue is book sixth in this popular shifter series (Rabbit Creek Santa being a novella). The setting begins in the office of the mysterious Mr. Begley, as he assigns a job to one of his pack, a hunter/enforcer named William “Bull” Bulworth. Bull has a dark and lonely job of hunting and either eliminating (killing) rogue wolvers or changing them to permanently wolf form.

We find our heroine at an asylum for the criminally insane. We find that not all things in this hospital are what they seem.

I don’t do spoilers and this is a marvelous read you’ll want to experience for yourself. Ms. Rhoades has outdone her usual fine job of intricate plotting and marvelous characters. She delves into the dark world of the insane and those who try to make others believe they are. However, it’s not all dark and spooky. The wonderful cast of characters are well written, with humor, sincerity, and even a bit of teen angst. These are people you love to read about and hate to leave them when the story ends.

The plot is intriguing and twisty. You get to discover, along with the cast, the circles within circles of fated meetings and rescues in this marvelously well told story. You learn more about the Wolver community as a whole as the story progresses and the issues of keeping your species a secret from the human community and at the same time trying to find a place to live peacefully with your differences.

I’m sure if you love shifter books, or maybe even if you’ve never read one, this book will thrill you with adventure, danger, humor, and emotion. The love scenes are not gratuitous sex, but natural, loving and very emotional.

Grab your favorite beverage, a box of tissues and settle in for a wonderful ride of fun and emotion!

Enjoy everyone, I certainly did!

Write What You Know. Really?
by Jacqueline Rhoades

Let me begin by saying that I love teachers. I’ve worked with many over the years and the vast majority of them are dedicated to their profession. Why am I telling you this? Because I’m about to lodge a complaint against the dozen or more English teachers I’ve heard in my own career as a student, and through my work as an adult who have used the words, “Write what you know.”, without ever explaining what it means. I suspect it’s because many of them don’t know.

The average third grader will go cross-eyed at these words, instinctively knowing they don’t know much about anything and teenagers, of course, know everything. What about us as adults? I live a pretty boring life and frankly, I like it that way.

Are they saying I can’t write about a high fashion model because I’m short and rather round and spend most of my days in jeans and sweatshirts? How about a woman with expensive fashion taste? I wouldn’t know what to do with a pair of Jimmy Choos, first, because I don’t have the money to buy them and second, because I’d have absolutely nowhere to go in them. And let’s face it folks, what does anybody know about humans shifting into wolves? So, what is it I do know?

I know the peaceful quiet that descends on the woods after a snowfall. I know the eerie grey silence that comes with the eye of a hurricane. I know the embarrassment of giggling at a funeral. I know the profound and miraculous joy of holding a newborn in my arms and the heart stopping joy of having the guy I love look at me in the same way I look at him. I know about heartbreak and loss. The list goes on and on.

There are still things I don’t know. That’s where imagination comes in and a good book can make my imagination soar. What’s it like to not know who you are or where you come from? What’s it like to be drawn to another person without rhyme or reason? What’s it like to be responsible for another person’s death or to know that someone wants you dead? What’s it like to run with the wind? What’s it like to be a wolf?

You’ll notice that everything I’ve written here is not about acts, but about feelings. That’s where the very best fiction writers excel. Those books that remain with us long after the story is told are the ones that allow us to experience the emotions of the characters be it love, lust, anger, excitement, or fear. In the pages of a good book, we may be attracted to the way the characters look, but we become involved with them not because they’re cardboard cutouts of beautiful people, but because of what they carry inside. They touch the emotions we carry within ourselves.

So instead of telling those young, teenaged, or adult would-be writers out there to write what they know, I wish you’d start by saying “Write what you feel.”

Never Waste Tears by Gloria Zachgo – a Review

Never Waste Tears by Gloria Zachgo – a Review

Never Waste TearsAmazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
Each had their own reason to leave everything they knew. The land was free—the true price—was often high, where opportunities and tragedies were in equal abundance. Those who were strong, didn’t waste their tears, but used them wisely to help wash away their grief.
Joined together through friendship and family relations, Rebecca, Nathan, Hannah, Carl, and Sarah tell one story—each in their own voice. Never Waste Tears travels with them on their trek to homestead on the lonely Kansas prairie, where they pave the way for generations to come. They individually share their own dreams, challenges, heartaches, and guilt.

Review:

Never Waste Tears is a historical novel by Gloria Zachgo, it takes place in the 1800’s. The first part is just as the announcement of civil war between the North and South is declared. Told in journal format, it describes the times and feelings of several people and their lives.

The story begins in Ohio as civil war is declared. It takes Nathan’s father and two brothers off to war leaving Nathan (13) and his mother to run the family mercantile store by themselves. Nathan learns to haul and lift supplies around by himself, and to eventually take over the accounts due to his mother’s lack of education in math.

It’s also told from Rebecca’s point of view as her journal describes growing up in a well to do family, her mother trying to educate her in the art of becoming a gentle woman. She plays the piano very well and does needlepoint. She and her friend Martha miss seeing Nathan in school and church, now that he spends all his time at the store.

Later as the war goes on, the children grow up and mature. Nathan discovers a large attraction for Rebecca, but her mother doesn’t really consider his “suitable” for her daughter. He learns to win her father and mother’s approval, and Rebecca falls in love with him.

Due to circumstances, I don’t want to spoil the book. He and Rebecca move out west to begin a new life as a farmer. He planned on going to Nebraska but ended up settling in Kansas to avoid danger with the Indians. It didn’t work, they had danger in Kansas as well, but that’s another spoiler.

The journals add the points of view of Carl and Hanna Taylor as the couples go west on a wagon train.

The descriptions are filled with speech variances of each character, if they weren’t labeled, you could probably still tell who was journaling due to the differences in the way they talked or thought.

This isn’t filled with fancy romance or contrived villains. This is fiction, but a well thought out story of the reality of life in this time period. It describes people, situations, many of the things people faced while traveling by covered wagon to a destination they knew little about. It has true danger, perilous situations, emotional battles, post war problems, and much more.

It was a truly interesting and action packed read. It felt so real, I found myself going through the troubles and trials with them. They became my good friends and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Life on the prairie wasn’t for the weak.

If you like emotional and well written adventure that rings of actuality, give this wonderful story a read! I really enjoyed it.

The Marriage Match by Tracy March – a Review

The Marriage Match by Tracy March – a Review

The Marriage Match

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
Hot bachelor seeks bride

Resort tycoon Trent Hawthorne is looking for a wife. His all-business, no-nonsense grandmother (and the matriarch of the small town of Maple Creek) has selected three potential brides―all beautiful and approved. Each “fantasy date” will take place in a lush Caribbean setting, filmed like a reality show to promote the Hawthorne family’s chain of resorts. All of Trent’s hopes for love combined with a clever marketing gimmick…what could possibly go wrong?

As it turns out, all it takes is a kiss. A sizzling, sweet-as-sin kiss. But Cynthia Sawyer isn’t one of the bachelorettes, and she’s definitely not supposed to be making out with her boss’s sexy grandson. Not to mention it’s strictly against company policy. But Cynthia has her own reasons for hooking Trent up with a bride who isn’t her as soon as possible. And losing her heart is a price that she’s willing to pay…

Review:

The Marriage Match by Tracy March s a delightfully romantic tale of how romance and love can happen when two people so suited to each other meet, despite circumstances.

Cynthia Sawyer is a lovely girl who has grown up as a rebellious minister’s daughter, who grew up to love her parents despite their differences in lifestyle and attitude. She works as a personal assistant to Maple Creek’s matriarch Fairleigh Hawthorne “the Queen”. She also works at a local bakery part time to help make ends meet. The “Queen” has offered her a bonus of twenty-five thousand dollars to help ensure her grandson finds a bride of her choosing. The bonus is important to her, to help her parents get their home out of foreclosure.

Trent Hawthorne, grandson to the Queen, is a resort tycoon. He’s both handsome and smart. He has little time to find and woo a woman but longs to have a loving relationship and a family. He has consented to his grandmother’s idea of a “dating game” type event with three ladies his grandmother has hand-picked, from the right kind of women. This event will also be used as the new advertising campaign for their company.

Before starting on this project her meets Cynthia, who lives near his grandmother’s estate and is intrigued and delighted with both her beauty and personality. They share a brief romantic moment and one very hot kiss in the starry night, confusing them both.

This marvelous story then takes off with Cynthia having to help set up the fantasy dates on the island resorts with a camera crew filming. One date each of three weeks. Needless to say, she conflicted about this job, but she wants to save her parent’s home.

That’s where the story begins…and there is so much more. Tracy March has done a wonderful job of writing this intriguing story. The conversations are witty, and very emotional. The scenery is descriptive and exciting. The characters are so well done you fall in love with them and pray for the best outcome. This is a roller coaster ride of sight, sound, emotion, love and heartache.

The Marriage Match is a short, but thrilling read. Perfect for those days just after Christmas or actually anytime you have a few hours to cuddle up and enjoy a great story. If you’re looking for good entertainment, give this one a try. Enjoy, I certainly did.

In Your Sights (Sydney Triptych #1) by Elizabeth Krall-a review

In Your Sights (Sydney Triptych #1) by Elizabeth Krall-a review

In Your Sights

Amazon.com / Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 17, 2014

Caroline Bready is being watched. Someone is posting photographs of her on a mysterious website.

Still struggling to rebuild her life after the unsolved death of her husband, Caroline dismisses the images as unimportant. But as a serial rapist begins to attack women in Sydney, the photos take on a deadly meaning. Are they a threat? A warning? Or simply coincidence?

If Caroline cannot distinguish friend from foe, it could cost her life.

•••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: In Your Sights is a romantic mystery/thriller by Elizabeth Krall. Ms. Krall is a new author for me, but I’ll be waiting impatiently for more.

The premise of this story begins with a widow, Caroline Bready, whose husband was killed in a hit and run about 18 months prior and has yet to be solved, discovers a woman recently raped and marked by a serial rapist. As things unfold in this marvelously twisty thriller, it seems she’s being stalked…is it the rapist or someone else? Was her husband’s death an accident…? The twists and turns in this fast paced and marvelous thriller are well written and the characters are unique, from the main ones to the secondary and villain.

I can’t even tell you who the hero is, or it’s a spoiler and I hate those. Suffice it to say the characters are wonderfully written and unexpected. I can tell you a little about the main character, Caroline. She’s an IT professional from Denver who came to Australia to please her professional photographer husband. She’s grieving heavily, but like any human female, after 18 months, is also lonely. I thought her likable and believable, however pretty gullible (but after losing the love of your life…who wouldn’t be?). She loves her husband’s family and so doesn’t really want to return to the States after his death. She has a heavy romantic relationship, which is obviously not good for her, with a predatory office worker at the bank where they both work. The police work is excellent, but frustratingly real. The villain is clever, ruthless, and a perv.

This is not a huge book, it’s actually a pretty quick read, especially given the page turning pace and thrilling and suspenseful events. I read it and couldn’t put it down…loved every minute of it. From the descriptions of the area and life in Sydney to the scenery and weather. My favorite is the actual hero, which you only get to know if you read it!

Let me put it this way, I’m buying two copies for a couple of friends of mine…yes, I liked it that much! I’m also hoping for more adventures for these two people, as I think they have quite a future (…hint, hint to Ms. Krall). In any event, I’ll be looking for more from this marvelous, new (at least to me) author and her stories from “down under”. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

Lost Distinction

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Release Date: November 24, 2014

“It all started with a favor . . .”

When private investigator Jordan James agreed to search for the missing son of a U.S. Ambassador, she didn’t realize she was walking into a case one hundred years in the making. The deeper she delves into this unusual assignment, the more shocking, and the more dangerous, it becomes. With time running out and lives at stake, Jordan must race to identify the culprit of an elaborate plot while also uncovering a far more personal truth too intimate to ignore . . .

••••••••••••••

Lost Distinction is book two of the Jordan James, PI Series by Rachel Sharpe. It can be read as a stand-alone with little trouble. I personally loved having read the first so I knew circumstances referred to better than just the information given, but that’s just my preference. I loved revisiting Jordan and her wonderful world of friends and more.

This case is about her boyfriend, Rich Michaels, cousin. Estranged from distant family members of great power, wealth, and ambition Rick cares for his cousin Arthur, who is missing and concedes to ask Jordan for help.

They are instantly thrust into the lives of Rick’s estranged family. A political and very influential family, Jordan is no stranger to political families with an agenda, however, this one goes much farther than her own experience. The father (uncle to Rick) is Gatlin Cross, U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. His other cousins include a popular Judge, one is a representative running for a Senate seat, a brilliant surgeon, one a junior partner in a prestigious law firm, and Arthur (the missing) who was a professor.

The area and scenery are descriptive and well researched, both in the U.S. and London scenes. The conversations are interesting, witty and move the story quite smoothly and naturally. As far as romance, there are no sex scenes, so this is an easy read around younger members of your family, and the story does not suffer for lack thereof.
The plot is excellent, revolves around finding the missing Arthur but includes a murder of the brilliant surgeon as well. Great family dynamics of the very influential and wealthy family. There’s humor, love, danger. All that you would expect of a first class mystery. The twists are very interesting and I thought surprising. Author Sharpe also includes a bit of a love triangle in this one, which ends with a will she or won’t she at the end. I for one will be waiting for the next in this brilliant series to find out just what decision Jordan will make about her love.

Grab a good holiday snack, and settle in for a wonderful read. This is one to enjoy, I certainly did.

Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress
Matchmaker Trilogy – Book #3
by Theresa Romain
Release Date: January 6, 2014

Secrets of a Scandalous HeiressAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
ONE GOOD PROPOSITION DESERVES ANOTHER…

Heiress Augusta Meredith can’t help herself—she stirs up gossip wherever she goes. A stranger to Bath society, she pretends to be a charming young widow, until sardonic, darkly handsome Joss Everett arrives from London and uncovers her charade.

Now they’ll weave their way through the pitfalls of the polite world only if they’re willing to be true to themselves…and to each other…

Review:

Theresa Romain has written a delight historical romance in Secrets of a Scandalous Heiress. Augusta Meredith, a young heiress to Meredith Beauty has tried to be accepted in the “ton”, but her birth to parents whose wealth was the result of hard work and building a company with their own hands, would not allow her into the tight inner circle of the titled. Emotionally damaged by the sudden loss of her parents and the man who courted her and she thought loved her, she’s running from herself and not in particularly good directions.

Joss Everett, grandson of a baron, but also son of a half Indian woman is much like Augusta. Accepted on the fringes of the “ton” but not totally included. He’s the businessman for his cousin Baron Sutcliffe, even though he’s family; he’s pretty much treated as a servant. His mother died while he was a young boy and he has developed an inordinate amount of “damnedable” pride.

The two meet in the town of Bath. Augusta is accompanying her friend Lady Tallant, who was recovering from losing a daughter in childbirth. Augusta is, for her own reasons, calling herself Mrs. Flowers, and a recent widow. Joss is trying to find out information on someone blackmailing his cousin. He knows who she is and she manages to secure his help in keeping her secret.

She gives him help in finding people to talk to about the blackmail issue; he keeps her secret of not being Mrs. Flowers.

That’s the setup. I don’t do spoilers. The writing is excellent, you very much get the feel of the time and circumstances. The two are attracted, but due to the issues each has, they just can’t seem to truly connect. The descriptive writing is flawless, the secondary characters are very well done. I’m an action lover, so the pace is a bit slow for me, but it’s very much like the times it’s written about. It’s a wonderful tale of all kinds of healing and not running away from yourself. Yes, it’s a love story. Is there any other kind? LOL

It’s a lovely story and well written. I look forward to more from this author.

If you like historical romance, this is your cup of tea.

Enjoy everyone, I did.

A Bit of Heaven on Earth by Lauren Linwood- a review

A Bit of Heaven on Earth

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 2, 2014

When Gavin of Ashgrove and his closest friend are captured in a fierce battle during the Hundred Years’ War, their captors demand a hefty ransom from their fathers for their return. Robert is quickly set free, but Gavin’s father refuses to pay for his son’s release, leaving him to rot in a squalid French prison. Aided by a sympathetic priest, he escapes and returns home to England, only to find he has been proclaimed a bastard and disinherited.

With nowhere to turn Gavin journeys to Kentwood, where he fostered as a boy, hoping Lord Aldred will take him on as a knight in his guard. The old warrior is close to death, but he soon realizes Gavin is his son. Aldred plots to have Gavin inherit Kentwood and marry his much younger wife, Elizabeth, a famed and opinionated beauty who remains a virgin after a decade of marriage.

Will the king recognize Lord Aldred’s first request of a marriage between Elizabeth and Robert, uniting Robert’s estate with Kentwood—or will the temperamental Edward reward Aldred’s years of service and honor a dying man’s final request?

•••••••••••••••••••••

A Bit of Heaven on Earth is a historical romance fiction by Lauren Linwood. It’s an intricate story of life in that era for women and the trials they had of living life as property of men with no thought to their feelings. However, this is one of finding and attaining true love.

The heroine of this story is the lovely Elizabeth of Aldwyn, a young head-strong woman-child. She’s a bit of an untamed shrew. She’s had many suitors, but doesn’t like the thought of a man or marriage and spurns or embarrasses them until they leave. Her father is at his wits end to get her married and out of his hair. He drugs her and delivers her to be married to an older nobleman whose latest wife has died. She wakes to find herself away from home and must get married.

She becomes resolved, but finds that her husband Aldred of Kentwood. Her wedding night her new husband fails to be able to perform his marital duties, and gently tells her he’ll have the marriage annulled and she can return home. She strikes a bargain with him, she stays his wife and he teaches her to read and write, to keep account of Kentwood, and anything else she needs to know to be able to help him run the estate. He gets to keep his pride and she will take care of him to the end of his days. They actually learn to care for each other and all goes more than just well for over ten years.

The hero and love interest is Gavin of Ashgrove. Gavin is off fighting the French with his King’s son when his mother dies badly, When he finally escapes prison and returns home, he finds his mother dead, his father remarried and lets him know his mother confessed on her deathbed that he is not the son of the Lord of Ashgrove.
Not having a home he goes to the man who raised or fostered him and taught him everything he knows to ask for a place in his guard or help getting into the King’s guard. This man is Aldred of Kentwood.

Okay, that’s the really intricate setup. Getting to this point was a good part of the story and the details of how this was all accomplished is something that needs to be read to be felt and understood. It’s well written, with good dialogue and descriptive scenes. There is so much more involved than these two people, but for purpose of the review, I’d rather you got the privilege of reading Ms. Linwood’s words, not mine.

It’s a quick read, only a little over two hundred pages and well worth the time investment. A perfect read for a snowy winter’s day or evening. Suffice it to say the road to true love and happiness is twisty with many ups and downs to keep you turning pages.

Do yourself a favor and give this a read. It’ll curl your toes with sizzling heat and heartache as the lovers travel toward an HEA! Enjoy everyone, I truly did.

Heart of a Dove by Abbie Williams – Review & Giveaway

Heart of a DoveAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
The Civil War has ended, leaving the country with a gaping wound. Lorie Blake, a southern orphan sold into prostitution at fifteen, has carefully guarded her aching soul from the disgrace forced upon her every evening. Two years have passed, leaving her with little hope of anything more. Meanwhile, three men – longtime friends – and a young boy with a heart of gold are traveling northward, planning to rebuild their lives in the north and leave behind the horrors of their time as soldiers in the Confederate Army.

Fate, however, has plans of its own, causing their lives to collide in a river town whorehouse. Forced to flee, Lorie escapes and joins them on the journey north. But danger stalks them all in the form of a vindictive whorehouse madam and an ex-Union soldier, insane and bent on exacting revenge. At last, Lorie must come to terms with her past and devastating secrets that she cannot yet bear to reveal.

Heart of a Dove is the first book in a gripping, sweeping romantic saga of pain, unbearable choices, loss and true love set against the backdrop of a scarred, post-Civil War America.

Review:

Heart of a Dove is a historical but romantic telling of life after the Civil War, yet it is so much more than that.

After the Civil War ended there was a generation of men returning to homes that were either no longer there or had been irreparably changed by the war and life. Many families had to deal with life after their brothers, sons, fathers, uncles and others had given their lives to a cause that was unrealized. Many of these families fought for something nobler than the ability to hold slaves, in fact many of those on the losing side did not believe in slavery but in other things that were at stake. While the men were away at war, life for the women was no better and sometimes so much worse.

This is the world author Abbie Williams takes us to. It could and often was a brutal and barbaric time for those unable to defend themselves. However, even in this time, love finds a way to bloom and grow.

I don’t want to spoil this marvelous tale for you by giving you too much detail, so let me just give you the circumstances of interest. A lovely Tennessee girl of very good family is left orphaned and in the care of neighbors, who did not care. Her life was a living hell…

When all seems lost enter three men traveling to a new home in the West. Three handsome strong and honorable men, who found something in common, her father. One takes her into his care and promises to honor and care for her. She travels west with them and one twelve year old boy, who she begins to love like she did her brothers who died.

While traveling, she falls in love with one of the younger men, and he with her. There is a small touch of the fey in this relationship. They seem to be fated to be together. The man who offered to take care of her is also in love with her. The third man, loves his friends and wants her happiness like a sister.

Okay, that’s the setup and I’ve purposefully left out the incredible details. To give away more would dampen the wonderful descriptive narrative of this marvelous tale. Ms. Williams’ writing flows smoothly, actually making you feel the emotions, terror, and despair as well as the beauty and love fighting for survival.

The only criticism I can offer is that she may have tried too hard to convince me of the couple’s overwhelming love…I got it right away. This did not distract from the story for me.

Can the situation be worked out, or will this tear the three friends apart forever? How this story and fate contrive to make this all come about is a marvelous display of storytelling, one which I’m looking forward to seeing again in the next installment of tales by this wonderful new (at least for me) author.

Grab you favorite treats, some tissues, something soft you can pound things with…LOL. Enjoy this great story. I certainly did.
