ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 7, 2023

The lost Mafia princess has been found, and I will make her mine.

Bianca Carlotti might despise me, but little does she know that only feeds the beast within. I will marry the innocent princess and use her to exact revenge on the enemies who would destroy me.

Kidnapping her is easy and, as my wife, Bianca will be tamed. I will seduce her with the pleasures and privileges of the life she should have had, mold her into the type of woman who can hold her own in my world, and teach her to obey.

Whether she likes it or not, Bianca is now mine, and it’s time to use her to make my enemies pay. But my wife—my weapon—might just be the cause of my downfall.

REVIEW: RUTHLESS POSSESSION is the first instalment in Zoe Delaney (aka Jen Katemi) contemporary, adult DARK ENEMIES dark, erotic, Mafia romance trilogy focusing on twenty-five year old, heir to the Carlotta empire Bianca Carlotti, and Gregorio ‘Rio’ Agosti, head of the Carlotti-Agosti Crime syndicate.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Bianca and Rio) RUTHLESS POSSESSION follows in the aftermath of the abduction of our story line heroine. Believing herself to be Bree Walker, Bianca will quickly come to discover she is the only living heir to the Carlotti Crime Empire. Adopted as an infant, Bianca never knew the truth about her parents, and their connection to organized crime but within hours of her kidnapping Bianca will discover that all is not as it appears to be, and she is about to get a crash course on life, living with a mobster. Married and forced to sign over her family’s control, Bianca must learn to play the doting wife or face the consequences at home. What ensues is the building but acrimonious relationship between Bianca and Rio, and the potential fall out as betrayal and and fear sit at the heart of Bianca’s need to run.

The world building introduces some of the background behind Bianca’s abduction. As the sole surviving member of a powerful crime family, Bianca has been targeted by those hoping for a seat at the top but Rio Agosti is the first to discover Bree Walker’s true identity, an discovery that threatens our story line heroine.

The relationship between Rio and Bianca is an enemies to lovers, forced marriage in which Bianca is slowly falling for the man who is about to steal her life but marriage to a mobster means facing down the dangers of life living in the criminal underworld, and Bianca wants only to survive without losing it all. As Rio continues to threaten the people she loves, Bianca knows that to protect everyone, she may have to run to protect herself. The $ex scenes are erotic, provocative and not without some issues of consent.

We are introduced to Rio’s brother Nikolas, their aunt Francine, as well as several members of competing crime families.

RUTHLESS POSSESSION is a story of power and control, crime and punishment, secrets and lies, trust and fear, betrayal and vengeance. The fast paced, character driven premise is dark, intriguing and dramatic; the romance struggles in the face of possession and fear; the characters are desperate, determined and edgy. RUTHLESS POSSESSION ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

“Your passion can be fueled by pleasure, or it can be fueled by hatred, but you cannot hide your need, Bianca. I sense it, and now you know my response.”

“I don’t…”

“Oh, little bird. You do.” I lean down, testing her, and brush my lips across hers.

A small mewling sound escapes her, and she doesn’t pull away.

“I don’t want to want.” Her voice is so faint it is almost not there at all, and her eyes shimmer with unshed tears. “I hate you and everything you stand for.”

“I know. And you should.”

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 29, 2023

Star Shine Meadows is all about freedom, thanks to the hippie parents who raised her. Juggling her jobs as a professional costume character actor and a line sitter, she believes in no expectations, no stressful ambitions, and no-strings-attached relationships. So when she meets a birthday girl’s grumpy uncle while working a princess party, she can’t help but needle him. She’ll never see him again, and honestly, he’s pretty hot.

Rafe Whitman may be a veterinarian with a great bedside manner, but that doesn’t mean his patience extends to anyone with opposable thumbs. His family will not stop nagging him about finding “the one,” so when he runs into obnoxiously cheery Star again, he makes her an offer: He’ll pay her more than she would make doing her odd jobs if she’ll pretend to be his girlfriend at family gatherings. She can stop sitting in line waiting for someone else’s new phone, and he’ll get his family off his back.

When the tension between them heats to a breaking point, Star’s desire for “no strings” is tested against Rafe’s staunch stability. They say opposites attract, after all.

•••••

REVIEW:THE LOVE PLOT by Samantha Young is a stand alone, contemporary, adult, romance story line focusing on Star Shine Meadows, and thirty-three year old, veterinarian Dr. Rafe Whitman.

Told from first person perspective (Star) THE LOVE PLOT follows the fake relationship agreement between Star Shine Meadows, and thirty-three year old, veterinarian Dr. Rafe Whitman. Star Meadows grew up with unconventional parents, in an unconventional life style, has two unconventional jobs, and a tight knit group of unconventional friends. A job posing as a Disney princess finds Star face to face with Dr. Rafe Whitman, the birthday girl’s uncle, and a man whose family is desperate to find him a wife. Butting proverbial heads from the outset, Rafe offers Star a six month, financially exclusive contract as his ‘fake girlfriend’ in which Star will discover her unconventionality does not fit well with the Whitman side of life. As Star slowly falls for the man in question, his family is slowly changing our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship between Star and Rafe, and the potential fall-out as Star begins to lose herself in an effort to support the man with whom she has fallen in love.

The relationship between Star and Rafe begins acrimoniously. Rafe is troubled by Star’s methods of employment but desperate times force Rafe to offer Star another ‘unconventional’ contract, a contract to play the loving girlfriend of a man who is struggling in his personal life. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Star’s friends, and her Bohemian parents, as well as Rafe’s extended family of rich snobs and questionable friends.

THE LOVE PLOT is a ‘sunshine-grumpy’ story line of desperation and determination, friendships and family, acceptance and love. The premise is entertaining, engaging and inviting; the characters are flirty, sassy and lively; the romance is edgy, tender and emotional.

I was shocked to find Rafe striding determinedly in my direction again. His broody face was more brooding than usual, so I braced myself.
Rafe Whitman drew to a stop before me and blurted out, “You’ll literally do anything for money?”
Anger flared in an instant from the tips of my toes to the ends of my hair, so I didn’t hear the tone in which the question was asked. I threw back my shoulders. Taller than average height at five-seven, I was still a good seven or eight inches shorter than this arrogant Manhattanite, but I was prepared to take him. Anyone who knew me knew I was a patient, laid-back kind of person . . . but Rafferty Whitman had crossed the line!
“What the hell does that mean?” I seethed. “Are you suggesting I charge money for sex?”
Rafe’s blue eyes flashed with indignation. “No, I am not,” he hissed at me, eyes darting around. “And lower your voice.”
“I will not lower my voice.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “I like most people, but you sure do make it difficult, Whitman. It’s like you get off on being as insulting as possible.”
He mirrored me, crossing his arms over his chest. “I’m not insulting you. If you’d paid attention, you’d realize the question was not meant to be untoward.”
“Untoward?” I grimaced. “What, are you from the nineteenth century? Is that why you hate phones? Because if the technology is difficult for you to grasp, I can teach you how to use a phone.” I was being a little shit now, but he brought it out in a person.
Rafe sneered. “How much will that cost me?”
Argghhh! I narrowed my eyes but smiled. “Oh, for you . . . twice as much as I’d charge anyone else.”
“I see. Well.” Rafe uncrossed his arms to reach into his back pocket. He removed his wallet and then a business card from that. Holding it out to me, he continued, “I guess you stand to make a lot of money for doing very little. If you’re interested, call me.”
Flummoxed, I took the card. “Um . . . doing what?”
But he was already walking away.
“Doing what, Whitman?” I yelled after him.
He didn’t answer, just casually strolled off. His suit pants molded perfectly to his sculpted ass. So unfairly physically perfect.
“Are you going to call him?”
I looked up from the business card that read Whitman Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Rafferty Whitman.
His vet clinic was on the busy, tree-lined Columbus Avenue. Nice location, Dr. Rafe.
There was his phone number right beneath the address.
Yvonne grinned at me, and I answered her question. “Nah.”
Her eyes bugged out of her head as her friends gaped at me in shock. “Uh, Clark Kent just asked you to call him, Star. You don’t turn down Clark Kent.”
“You do if he’s an asshole. Life lesson, girls: an attractive face should not sway you if a pompous, arrogant, insulting, offensive turd lurks behind it.”
Yvonne chuckled. “You did yell at him and try to embarrass him with the peanut butter and jelly stuff. That’s not true, is it?”
I rolled my eyes. “No, it’s not true.” But she was right. I had antagonized him.
“You should make it true. I’d roll in a bathtub of jelly with that man.”
Slipping the card into my purse, I shrugged. “Impossible. His ego would take up the whole tub. No room for jelly. Or me—I mean you.”
“You’re not the least bit curious to find out what he wants to pay you to do?”
“Considering how that sounds, nope. Not at all. Ooh, look, the line is moving. Yay.”
But as the girls turned to move with the line, I knew I was lying.
I was so curious, my heart still raced from my encounter with Rafe.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 22, 2023

What if you could have one more day with someone you lost?

Diana Merriman, a physical therapist, is probably the only person in the small town of Snow Haven, North Carolina, who isn’t looking forward to Christmas. It’s been three weeks since her fiancé Linus was critically injured when a car hit him as he biked home from the toy store he owns and manages. Watching him open his eyes is the only gift she wants, but she can’t help losing a little more hope every day.

But an unexpected visit from a friendly neighbor and finding a snow globe of Snow Haven—a gift Linus had hidden in the closet—the night before Christmas Eve changes things in ways Diana never would have imagined. Because on Christmas Eve Diana wakes up to find that it’s not—Christmas Eve, that is. Instead, it’s somehow December 4 all over again, the day Linus got hurt, and as mystified as Diana is, she immediately starts a plan to save her partner from his fate.

Nothing is that simple, of course. Instead of a single repeat of that day, Diana finds herself in an endless loop of December 4, experiencing every possible variation of events. Along the way, she uncovers startling truths about herself, her relationship, and even her career that illustrate the ways she’s retreated from her life—and in the face of life’s slights and outright blows, from her deepest feelings. Suddenly hope is second only to joy as Diana opens her heart to the people she loves in every way she can.

REVIEW:THROUGH THE SNOW GLOBE by Annie Rains is a contemporary, adult, women’s slightly paranormal fiction story line focusing on physical therapist Diana Merriman.

Told from omniscient third person perspective (Diana) THROUGH THE SNOW GLOBE follows Diana Merriman, a physical therapist who lives in Snow Haven, North Carolina. December 4th is repeat on an endless loop when a visit from her neighbor on Christmas Eve finds Diana getting what she wished for, but at a cost. As Diana attempts to change the events that lead up to her fiancé’s accident, Diana will discover she isn’t the only person reliving the same day or heart break in their life.

THROUGH THE SNOW GLOBE focuses on new discoveries, new family, new paths, and new friendships. The sweet and gentle yet familiar premise blends a bit of ‘Groundhog Day’ with ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, as our heroine believes her own life is an endless cycle of the same but a wish reveals that change may be necessary when the heart begins beating anew.

At least he still has Bree, his best friend and confidante. Bree has always been there for Sam, but she’s never revealed her biggest secret: she’s in love with him. To help herself move on, Bree applies for her dream job across the country—and doesn’t say a thing to Sam.

But as Sam tries to resuscitate his career, he turns to Bree for support—and maybe more. In the confines of her tiny apartment, they share a different dynamic. A charged dynamic. But she’s his friend. He can’t be falling for her.

Except he is.

Are his feelings for Bree just funny business? Or is their smoldering attraction the real deal?

Sam and Bree were childhood best friends from the proverbial wrong side of the tracks, struggling in their day to day existence but as they grew older, Sam needed a release, and found said release in stand up comedy, finally landing a coveted spot on New York’s Comedy Hour. As their respective careers took off, Sam and Bree would come in and out of one another’s lives until the day Sam proposed marriage to someone else. A tumultuous relationship and breakout played out for the world to ‘hear’ left Sam the target of mean tweets and jokes, landing Sam on his best friend’s couch in an effort to hide but Sam is oblivious to Bree’s attraction and love, a love that is about to push our hero out of her life. What ensues is the best friends to lovers romance and relationship, and the fall-out as Sam torpedoes his own career for the woman he loves.

Bryony Edwards has loved her best friend for as long as she can remember but watching from the sidelines as Sam gave his heart to everyone else meant it was time for Bryony to move on, without the man that she loves.

The relationship between Bree and Sam is best friends to lovers; unrequited love that intensifies with a short lived term of close proximity in which Sam hides in seclusion from the paparazzi in the wake of his immortalized break up. Bree has supported Sam Leyland all of his life but it was now time that Bree made an effort to support herself. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate .

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and fascinating secondary and supporting characters including Sam’s fellow comedians at Comedy Hour, and Bree’s co-workers at New York’s planning commission, all o whom play a significant part throughout the story.

FUNNY GUY is a familiar story; an amalgamation of Saturday night comedy sketches, heart broken pop star million seller songs, the meltdown and spiral of a famous comedian, and the resurrection of a career based upon said spiral and fall out. REVIEW: CHICK MAGNET by Emma Barry is a contemporary, adult, stand alone romance focusing on thirty-somethings, veterinarian Dr. Will Lund, and YouTuber Nicole Jones.

Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives CHICK MAGNET focuses on the building romance and relationship between small town veterinarian Dr. Will Lund and YouTuber Nicole Jones. Nicole Jones walked away from an emotionally abusive relationship, having been insulted and destroyed on social media. Known as the ‘Chick Nic’, a YouTuber who gives advice on raising chickens, Nicole Jones founds herself back in her grandmother’s home town where she will meet cantankerous veterinarian Dr. Will Lund. Will’s business is struggling in the aftermath of COVID19, and without a quick influx of cash, Will is considering shutting down but having met his new neighbor, and the current bane of his existence, Will reconsiders his future, a future that is threatened by the bank’s foreclosure. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Will and Nicole, and the potential fall-out as Nicole’s past returns to add insult to injury, and Will must consider what’s next in his career.

The relationship between Will and Nicole begins acrimoniously when one of Nicole’s chickens becomes ill. Will is opposed to the recreational breeding and ownership of chickens, and Nicole’s YouTube channel has become one of the more popular channels for chicken hobbiests. Will’s attraction to Nicole is immediate but his business is failing, and our hero perceives himself as a failure, a failure who doesn’t believes he is entitled to love. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.

The secondary and supporting characters include several locals who know everything and everyone in Yagerstown. The townies support one another; are aware of Nicole’s YouTube fame; and the only black mark on the otherwise group of loveable people are Nicole’s ex, and the questionable attitude of Will Lund’s family.

CHICK MAGNET is a sweet story of familiar and success during and after COVID19. The premise is endearing and entertaining; the characters are energetic and captivating; the romance is seductive.

Ghostly Game (GhostWalkers #19) by Christine Feehan-Review, Excerpt & Giveaway

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 2, 2023

Gideon “Eagle” Carpenter is used to rolling with the punches life has thrown at him. It’s the only thing that’s kept him alive. He and his team of GhostWalkers have seen and experienced it all. He does his best to live with all the sins written on his soul. Then he hears the laughter of a woman with the ability to erase—even for a few precious moments—the darkness of his past.

Laurel “Rory” Chappel has always been a nomad. She’s accustomed to taking care of herself, despite the physical challenges she lives with. She thinks she’s too weak to find real love, but that doesn’t stop her interest in Gideon from turning into a full-on addiction. He’s all rough edges and danger contrasted with a tenderness that makes her feel safe. Still, after a life spent in motion, she’s not sure she knows how to stay in one place.

Gideon hopes he can persuade Rory to take a chance on him with every electric touch. But soon, life conspires against him, forcing the GhostWalker to risk everything to protect the woman he loves….

••••••

REVIEW:GHOSTLY GAME is the nineteenth instalment in Christine Feehan’s contemporary, adult GHOSTWALKERS erotic, paranormal romance series focusing on an elite group (4 teams) of enhanced men and women known as the GhostWalkers (GW). These ‘super soldiers’ were once part of an unauthorized government experiment performed by Dr. Peter Whitney. The original GhostWalkers struggled without a female anchor, a female whose genetic and enhanced powers were often in tandem with the men involved. This is GhostWalkers Gideon ‘Eagle’’ Carpenter, and bartender Laurel ‘Rory’ Chappel’s story line. GHOSTLY GAME can be read as a stand alone but for back story I recommend reading the series in order, or at the very least book one SHADOW GAME where the reader is introduced to the world of the GhostWalker.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (Gideon and Rory) GHOSTLY GAME follows with Gideon’s discovery of the woman he believes is his fated mate. Laurel ‘Rory’ Chappel rarely stays in one place or city for very long but has found a home and friendship in San Francisco. A series of break ins and murders in her apartment building finds our heroine the target of police, police she begins to suspect are on the wrong side of the law. Meanwhile, several mysterious and dangerous men begin to follow our heroine from work to home, where she will come face to face with her future in the guise of GhostWalker Gideon Carpenter. What ensues is the building but trepidatious relationship between Gideon and Rory, and the fall-out as Rory’s issues of trust implode when secrets and lies push her out of Gideon’s life.

Rory Chappel has no idea she is a GhostWalker: a part of Peter Whitney’s orphaned girl experiments, experiments of which have left Rory with no memory of her early life, or the torture and pain that had been inflicted as a child but the more time she spends with Gideon, using their telepathic abilities, Rory’s memories and powers begin to tear at the fabric of her mind, a tear that can only be healed by a psychic physician.

Gideon Carpenter has not been forthcoming about who he is, and what he can do but it is his team of GhostWalkers that threatens his growing relationship with our story line heroine. Mack McKinley, Gideon’s team leader, suspects Rory is the enemy, sent by Dr. Peter Whitney, and as such has the entire team looking at Rory as an assassin, biding her time to destroy them all. As Rory continues to struggle with issues of trust, she begins to pull away, suspecting she has more than one target aiming to take her down. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters from GhostWalkers Team Three headed by Mack McKinley and his wife Jaime: Javier Enderman, Kane Cannon, Paul Mangan, Rhianna Bonds, Ethan Meyers, Lucas Atherton, Marc Lands, and Brian Hutton but saying that we are not witness to their powers or their strengths with the exception of Paul Mangan. We are introduced to Rory’s friends and neighbors: Lydia Sawyer, Janice DeWitt, Pam Williams, Cindy Atler and Sally Hudson, and Rory’s boss Brad Fitzpatrick, and Detective Warren Larrsen. The requisite evil has many faces.

The world building continues to focus on Dr. Peter Whitney and his experiments that have created a super solider, as well as the abuse of a number of little girls under his ‘care’ but use of these powers amongst Team Three is limited throughout the story except in the case of Gideon and Paul. I have to question why the Team would text information to one another when each of them has the ability to talk telepathically between minds.

GHOSTLY GAME is a story of power and control, secrets and lies, abuse, torture and brutality, acceptance and love. The premise is detailed and intriguing; the romance is subtle; the characters are powerful, determined and strong.

“I’m not getting the GhostWalker vibe off her,” Gideon said, his eyes on the woman talking to one of her many male customers.
It didn’t matter that her hair was piled on her head in a sloppy knot that was falling out tendril by wayward tendril; it was obvious she had masses of hair, and it was dark cherry red. The real deal. Cherry red. He’d never seen that color of hair on anyone before. Every time she moved under a light, it blazed into vibrant life. It was difficult to keep his eyes off her.
She had those eyes. A deep green. Emerald? Jade? No, emerald for certain. Her eyes sparkled when she talked to her customers. She looked directly at them even when she was mixing drinks, her rhythm never faltering. Sometimes she would laugh softly, the sound musical, turning heads no matter how low it was in the noise of the crowded bar.
“You’ve been here several times over the last couple of weeks, Javier.” Gideon made it a statement. It would be difficult to get anything past Javier.
Gideon had held out as long as he could. The doctor hadn’t given him permission to come see Rory in person, but he couldn’t resist the compulsion any longer. Javier wasn’t happy about it, but he’d come along to ensure Gideon didn’t tear open any wounds. In other words, Gideon thought a little ironically, babysitting.
“I’ve watched her closely,” Javier admitted. “I can’t see any indication that she’s a GhostWalker, other than she has extraordinary reflexes. Her bartending skills are amazing. She’s fast and can handle multiple orders. She doesn’t seem to forget faces or names. On the other hand, I’ve followed her home every night, and she doesn’t run or exhibit any kind of behaviors or skills a GhostWalker might under cover of darkness. She walks, Gideon. Even if there’s a threat to her, which, on more than one occasion, I shut down.”
Gideon didn’t like that. The bartender everyone called Rory was a very attractive woman, although she didn’t seem to notice that she was. She didn’t flirt with her customers so much as genuinely try to connect in a friendly, positive way. If a man asked her out, she gave him a grin but refused gently.
Gideon liked the sprinkling of freckles across her nose and her generous mouth. It would be easy to fixate on both. “You did a background search on her?” Javier was a genius with computers. Gideon knew Javier had. He’d read the report multiple times and committed it to memory. He hoped Javier had updated it.
“Not much to find. She moves around a lot. Lost her parents early. Put herself through bartending school and uses that to earn her way. She doesn’t stay in one place very long. She goes to a state, travels within that state for a little while and moves on to the next one.”
“Anyone following her?”
“Not that I can find.”
Gideon slid his fingers around the neck of the beer bottle and rolled it back and forth. “I’m really drawn to her, Javier, more than any woman I’ve ever been around. The chemistry for me is off the charts. That doesn’t happen. Not like this. Not just with the sound of her voice. Her laughter. Now, watching other men around her, my attraction to her could be a little on the dangerous side, and you know I’m really not that man.”
Javier studied him, one eyebrow arched.
“Not over a woman,” Gideon clarified. “How can I trust it? You know Whitney pairs us. Would he pair someone who isn’t a GhostWalker just to experiment?”
Javier shrugged. “I wouldn’t put it past the bastard to do anything, but what would it matter even if he did pair the two of you? Look at Kane and Rose. They’re happy together. Whitney didn’t make that happen. He might be able to make you attractive to each other, but he can’t manipulate your emotions.”
“And if she’s a plant?”
Again, Javier shrugged. “Then she’s an enemy, Gideon, and I’ll kill her. Whitney doesn’t get to have spies in our home.”
Every cell in Gideon’s body instantly rejected Javier’s casual threat. “Not happening, brother. I wouldn’t be able to let you do it,” he admitted. “That’s another black mark to put in the column against her.”

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 4, 2023

Penny Roundtree wants nothing more than to be a familiar to a witch. She’s been a member of the Society of Familiars ever since she was old enough to join the Fam. There’s just a small problem—no one’s hiring. Witches and warlocks are so long-lived that there are far more familiars available than witches to train them. So when an unorthodox arrangement to apprentice under the table to a forbidden warlock presents itself, she takes it.

Willem Sauer is banned from having a familiar due to past transgressions, thereby limiting his magic-casting abilities. Unfortunately for the surly, Prussian warlock, he has no choice but to work with enthusiastic Penny as a familiar. They immediately clash like dried roan horsehair and honeycomb gathered by moonlight (it’s a terrible spell combination, ask anyone).

Casting spells has delightful perks Penny never could have dreamed of, but also greater dangers. Someone is targeting Penny. Willem and Penny must work together to catch their enemy, and if their ploy requires a little kissing on the side, who is to question the rules of magic?

REVIEW:WHAT THE HEX is the second instalment in Jessica Clare’s contemporary adult HEX erotic, paranormal romance series. This is troubled and embattled warlock Willem Sauer, and thirty year old, apprentice familiar Penny Roundtree’s story line. WHAT THE HEX can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous storyline is revealed where necessary .

Told from dual first person perspectives (Penny and Willem) WHAT THE HEX follows the building romance and relationship between troubled warlock Willem Sauer, and thirty year old, apprentice familiar Penny Roundtree. Warlock Willem Sauer has been banned from procuring a witch’s familiar, a person with a well of magic whom witches and warlocks need for fuel and power. Hundreds of years earlier Willem Sauer was the familiar to a powerful warlock but when he left to pursue his own dream of becoming a warlock, Willem has suffered in the wake of false accusations and trumped up charges but Willem is desperate for a familiar, someone to help him uncover the truth. Enter thirty year old, apprentice familiar Penny Roundtree, the woman with whom Willem will fall in love. With the help of Ben Magnus (Go Hex Yourself 1), Willem will come face to face with his future, a young woman who has yearned to become someone’s familiar but as Willem and Penny begin a search for the truth, they must enter into a fake romantic relationship in an effort to keep the spies at bay. What ensue is the building romance and relationship between Penny and Willem, and the potential fall-out as the charges against Willem become all too real, and Penny must search for answers where history has failed.

The relationship between Willem and Penny begin as a professional arrangement but a forbidden arrangement in the eyes of the Witch’s Council. Willem has been banned from doing magic, and from using a familiar but in his desperation to prove his innocence Willem is willing to break the laws, falling in love in the process. Penny is desperate to be chosen as a familiar but very few familiar have been chosen from the local pool of magic. With the help of her friends (Ben and Reggie) Penny finds herself a familiar to a man who has been shunned by his peers, shunned by betrayal and lies. As Penny and Willem’s fake relationship turns into something more, they find themselves the target of magic and revenge. The $ex scenes are erotic, passionate and intense.

The secondary and supporting characters are colorful, energetic and magical. We are introduced to several witches and warlocks: Penny’s boss Vivi, wanna-be familiars Cody, Katrina and Derek; Warlocks Titus and Stoker, as well as the return of Ben and Reggie (Go Hex Yourself). The requisite evil has many faces.

WHAT THE HEX is a story of magic and power, betrayal and vengeance, obsession and retribution, acceptance and love. The character driven premise is entertaining and captivating; the romance is seductive and provocative; the characters are fun, dynamic and determined.

PENNYThere’s nothing better than a well-established routine.

I love knowing what to expect. I love everyone playing their individual part, and watching it all come together. Maybe that’s me romanticizing even the mundane aspects of life, but the best kind of progress happens when the system works like a well-oiled machine. That’s why I don’t mind the weekly meeting of the Society of Familiars. Some people might find it boring, but I love it.

Well, most nights I love it. The current president of our society is . . . a bit difficult to listen to for long periods of time, if I’m being honest. I stifle a yawn as Derek Chapman bangs a gavel on the meeting table and then drones on. “Any other news to discuss before the society?”

It’s silent.

“Anyone? Anyone?”

I glance out at the gathered audience. There are twenty people here tonight. There should be all fifty of our local members out there, but a lot of them lose faith and stop attending, or they come around just enough to renew their dues and then disappear again for another year. I’m doing my best to make coming to society meetings more fun, but sometimes it feels like an uphill battle since no one else is putting in effort. I don’t blame them for feeling down about things. It’s hard to keep being positive when year after year, there’s no opportunity to apprentice. But I believe in positivity, and I’m sure our situation will change at some point. We just have to keep on.

“Anyone?” Derek drones out again.

Derek doesn’t think he’s part of the problem with the Fam, as we call the Society of Familiars. It’s an ironic name, because none of us are actually familiars. We’re the pool of candidates in waiting to become familiars. We’re here because we have the bloodlines and the inclination, and we’re just waiting for a witch or a warlock to come along with an opening for an apprentice. Until that glorious moment happens, all we have is the Fam.

And Derek isn’t exactly a dynamic leader. He’s dry and boring. He reads in a monotone from manuals instead of learning the information and speaking about it from the heart. He hyperfixates on tiny things about the society, like dues and attendance, and focuses less on the people themselves and what they bring to the group. As a result, our attendance numbers keep dwindling. You don’t have to attend all the meetings to be in the society, of course, but as someone that loves to be part of the group, it’s hard for me to watch everyone peel away under Derek’s lead.

“This is your opportunity to speak up,” Derek continues in the same colorless voice. He rubs his nose rather wetly, examines his fingers, and then peers out at the group. “Might I remind you that attendance and joyful participation will be considered by some warlocks and witches as a sign of enthusiasm.”

Ugh. Please. There’s a hierarchy to our group. Names are put on the list in order of how long we’ve been waiting and rarely get shuffled. The warlock or witch then pulls from the top candidates. It doesn’t have anything to do with “joyful participation.” That’s just Derek being, well, Derek.

I raise my hand and bounce to my feet, clutching my notes. Time to save the day. “I just wanted to say to please remember to bring your cookies for next week’s baking swap! All cookies, cupcakes, and brownies are welcome, but remember that if you use known allergens or rare spell components in your baking, to please label your goods accordingly.” I glance around the room, smiling at everyone as warmly as I can. “I also wanted to get volunteers for the car-wash fundraiser for Abby this weekend, and a reminder that several of us are going out for drinks after this. Everyone is of course invited!”

“Thank you, Penny,” Derek replies, his monotone drowning the shot of fun I just tried to inject. “Any other familiar business?”

No one speaks up. There’s a polite cough in the back.

“Then I’d like to close the meeting-” Derek begins, lifting his gavel like he’s a judge.

“Wait.” Someone in the audience stands up. It’s Cody, a good friend of mine. We’re about the same age and in the same situation-as in, we’re both from a long line of familiars, and yet we have no one to serve. “When are we opening up membership again?”

I look over at Derek, who frowns. “We’re not.”

In the audience, Cody looks unhappy with this bit of information. “Why not?”

Derek blinks. He’s elderly, and for a moment, I wonder if he’s forgotten where he’s at, and my heart squeezes with pity. Poor old thing. But then he turns to me, a hint of confusion on his face. “Why not?”

I have to answer? I stammer for a moment, then try to frame it in as positive a light as possible. “Right now we’re focusing on our existing members to give them the best opportunity for familiarship possible.”

“So in other words, we’re not letting in new people because it’d make things too competitive?” Cody crosses his arms, his pose challenging. “Doesn’t that seem a little unfair?”

I look over at Derek, but he’s still watching me, so I bite back a sigh of frustration and keep a bright smile on my face. I shouldn’t be surprised that Derek is making me do part of his job. I kinda end up doing it anyhow. “Membership being open or closed is voted upon at the annual meeting. If everyone feels really strongly about opening up for new applicants, we can take a vote then. Or you can send a formal request to have it added to a future agenda-”

Cody waves a disgusted hand at me and sits back down.

Oh. Well then. I keep smiling and look over at Derek. I guess it’d be impolite to point out that not only did Derek propose that we close enrollment, but he’s supposed to be the one enforcing it, not me. Then again, if he’s having trouble remembering where he’s at, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised he’s forgetting this, too.

Derek bangs the gavel. “Business concluded for this evening. See you all next week.”

“Drinks at the Alehouse around the corner,” I call out cheerily. At least now it’s time for my favorite part of meeting nights. “We’d love to see you guys there!”

Despite my warm invitation, less than half the group migrates over to the Alehouse. I buy a few rounds of drinks to encourage people to stick around, and sip my amaretto sour as my friends talk about nothing in particular. Darcy is complaining about her job at a bookstore, and Megan just broke up with her boyfriend. Nathan asks if my job is hiring, but he always asks that. We’re never hiring for my part of the job, unfortunately. There’s a guy that works weekends at the front, but for spell component fulfillment? It’s just me. I get why he asks, though. Of all of us in the Society of Familiars, I’m the only one that has regular contact with any witches or warlocks. The rest of them just sit back and . . . wait.

I head for the bar once my drink is gone, ready to order another round. To my surprise, I run into Derek. He’s sitting at the bar instead of with the rest of us, and I feel a twinge of pity. I put a hand on his back and tap it to let him know of my presence. “I didn’t know you were here! Why didn’t you join us?”

He waves an irritated hand at me. “No one wants to sit with an old man like me.”

Oh dear. Derek’s words are slurred. I frown at the cluster of empty beer glasses in front of him. “You’re not old,” I say cheerfully. “You’re just distinguished.”

“I’m seventy-eight.” He leans over toward me. “And I never, not once, served a witch.”

“Because you’ve made your life all about the Society of Familiars, right?” Derek moved here recently from out of state, and ever since, he’s been determined to be involved in our local group. I’m thrilled that someone’s showing interest other than me, but I just wish he were a more dynamic leader.

But Derek just shakes his head. “No one wants an old familiar. I’m never gonna get to serve.” He peers over at me through beer-glazed eyes. “You’re gonna age out soon, too.”

That stings. Ouch. “I just turned thirty. There’s plenty of time for me yet.”

“Yes, but there’s always someone younger,” Derek says in a lofty voice. “You’re like me. The society is gonna be your life.” He nods sagely and then taps my arm. “Play your cards right and you can be where I am someday.”

I smile politely and grab the tray of drinks from the bartender the moment he sets them on the bar, practically flinging down my tip. Somehow, I manage to keep smiling as I make my way over to the table again, even though Derek’s words are ringing in my ears like a death knell.

The society is gonna be your life.

Do I even want that? I’m here because I want to learn witchcraft. I’m here because I want to serve as a familiar. I want to grow in my own power and live hundreds and hundreds of years, and I can do that only if a witch or warlock takes me under their wing and teaches me. But the problem is that because most witches are so long lived, they don’t like swapping out apprentices. They don’t like change. So anyone that apprentices can expect to be serving for a few decades at least before being taught to go out on their own.

The Countess by Sophie Jordan-Review and Giveaway

The Countess ( The Scandalous Ladies of London 1) by Sophie Jordan-Review and Giveaway

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon UK / B&N / KOBO / Google Play /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 28, 2023

The Scandalous Ladies of London chronicles the lives of a group of affluent ladies reigning over glittering, Regency-era London, vying for position in the hierarchy of the ton. They are the young wives, widows, and daughters of London’s wealthiest families. The drama is big, the money runs deep, and the shade is real. Life is different in the ton.

“My husband is a good man… just ask all the women he has bedded.”

Wealthy society maven Lady Gertrude knows how the world works. If her husband is less than faithful, it’s an acceptable price to pay for her coveted position at the apex of London’s most fashionable set. No exclusive soirée or lavish ball is complete without her and her group of decadent, well-connected friends. And this Season promises more excitement than usual: Tru is launching her daughter into Society, helping her navigate the cutthroat Marriage Mart, complete with fortune hunters, jealous debutantes, and malicious gossips.

As skilled as Tru is at playing the high-stakes games of the ton, she never expects to meet her match—until Jasper Thorne begins to court her daughter. Jasper needs a titled bride, but when he meets Tru, all his carefully laid plans go up in smoke. The attraction between Tru and Jasper is undeniable…and unacceptable. To indulge in an affair with her daughter’s suitor would be ruinous. If it becomes public, she’ll never survive the scandal. Especially as it becomes clear that he wants more than one night…he wants the impossible. He wants forever.

A sizzling story of scandalous ladies, irresistible temptation, and the dangers—and joys—of being true to yourself.

••••

REVIEW:Lady Gertrude “Tru” to fault and close friends is a lady of London society. She cares deeply for her children, she just doesn’t care for her husband (who is a well known adulterer!) it was a price to pay in those days, divorce was frowned upon and most ladies were ostracized! So Tru turned a blind eye and concentrated on her children and her “Ton” reputation. A ball or soirée wasn’t complete without her attending……

Jasper is a widower and in need of a “mother” to his children! A lady of the society would see his daughter being accepted and then wooed by the right kind of gentleman, so he sets his sights on the lovely young lady Delia….

Tru and Jasper meet at a seance and the again in the garden, there is a small spark of interest, but she’s a married woman and older (not much) than him!

But to accept Jasper’s offer would be scandalous! Her reputation would be ruined! And it would break her daughters heart! No! She must resist, but Jasper is determined to have his forever with Tru!

This is the first book of a new series and new author for me. I’m excited to read the next book.

It’s really well written and thought out. The characters are great, Gertrude is my favourite character. She’s in a loveless marriage, she turns a blind eye to her husbands numerous affairs, but makes a stand when her husband intends to “sell” his daughter to the highest bidder! She shows her compassion for her friends, and her love for her children.

And Jasper at first didn’t rate very high in my estimation (trying to seduced a married woman!) but he’s heart wants what it wants, and his determination to win Tru, finally won me over.

If you’re not a big fan of adulterer’s, then you might be a little disappointed with the main female character, although in her defence she does resist for most of the book. It’s not high on spice, but it’s full of drama, a few twists, and a little angst, but it is a great story, with really likeable characters.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 28,2023

You can’t believe all of them, but can you trust any of them?

Widower Kane Black is still ruinously married to his late wife, Lily. Grief has hollowed him… until he sees a woman with his wife’s inimitable beauty on the streets of Manhattan. He whisks her up to his towering penthouse, protectively under guard, nestling her in dark opulence where Lily’s memory is a possessive beguiling force.

Aliyah, Kane’s mother, deals in science. There are too many questions, too few answers, and too much at stake. “Lily” has dangerous control over Kane and there can be only one queen on the throne.

Amy, Kane’s sister-in-law, has been bloodied by deceit and betrayal, and she’s devolving into murderous rage. She’s paid too high a price and now intends to claim what she’s owed.

Three women, linked by buried secrets, circle the man who unquestioningly accepts the return of his beloved long-dead wife. Kane is happier than he’s ever been, and he’ll do anything to stay that way.

••••••

REVIEW:SO CLOSE is the first instalment in Sylvia Day’s contemporary, adult BLACKLIST dark, erotic, suspense, thriller set in the author’s CROSSFIRE world. This is thirty-two-year old, billionaire businessman Kane Black and his wife Lily’s story line.

Told from four first person perspectives (Witte, Amy, Aliyah, Lily) and second person (Lily) SO CLOSE follows the dysfunctional Black / Armand family as they battle one another for control of the family fortune and businesses, businesses built with someone else’s money. Six years earlier, Kane Black’s wife Lily, disappeared and thought to have drowned a few days after their wedding, and in the interim, Kane Black struggled with what happened and why. Six years searching the faces of nameless women who looked like the woman he continued to love ended with the ‘return’ of his wife, a hit and run, and weeks of recovery and rehab. All is not well, Lily is not the woman Kane Black remembers, and the family must now battle someone else for control of Baharan Pharmaceuticals, ECRA+ (Cosmeceuticals) and the Social Creamery Management Agency.

Kane Black has romantacized and idolized his missing wife so much so that no other woman could compare. Women tried, including those he considered family and friends, but the memory of his wife, his Lily, could never be erased, no matter how anybody tried. The unreality of perfection was paramount, her existence was thought to be the madness of a fractured mind. Lily is an enigma-Kane’s obsession a mystery and bewilderment but with her return, more questions arise for everyone involved.

The secondary and supporting characters play a major role throughout the story line often taking the lead perspectives: Kane Black’s siblings Darius Armand and his wife Amy, brother Ramin Armand, and their sister Rosana Armand; their mother Aliyah; Kane’s majordomo and security specialist Nick Witte; Tech specialist Ryan Landon of LanCorp; Drs Goldstein and Hamid, and the return of Gideon and Eva Cross.

Throughout the story Lily talks to herself, about Lily in third person but addresses Kane (to the reader) in second person point of view. We are up close and personal with Lily, Amy, Aliyah and Witte’s thoughts and thought processes-Lily’s thoughts reveal a darkness, an unknown, a secret past that is about to return. Kane Black’s persona and power are revealed through his interactions with, and observations by other characters- Kane’s perception and knowledge all come from second-hand information.

SO CLOSE is a slow building story line; a complex and detailed tale involving many moving and hidden parts following several intersecting pathways and channels. Think ‘SUCCESSION’ but more dysfunctional, darker and dangerous with assassins, espionage, and organized crime, hidden and blatant desperation, infidelity, jealousy and greed, secret lives, obsession and betrayal. The narcissism is strong; the hate is vitriolic and acerbic; the desolation and misery are flagrant; the power and control are dominant. The premise is heavy and intricate; the romance is bewitching; the characters are desperate, determined and dynamic. SO CLOSE ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.
