ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 28,2023

You can’t believe all of them, but can you trust any of them?

Widower Kane Black is still ruinously married to his late wife, Lily. Grief has hollowed him… until he sees a woman with his wife’s inimitable beauty on the streets of Manhattan. He whisks her up to his towering penthouse, protectively under guard, nestling her in dark opulence where Lily’s memory is a possessive beguiling force.

Aliyah, Kane’s mother, deals in science. There are too many questions, too few answers, and too much at stake. “Lily” has dangerous control over Kane and there can be only one queen on the throne.

Amy, Kane’s sister-in-law, has been bloodied by deceit and betrayal, and she’s devolving into murderous rage. She’s paid too high a price and now intends to claim what she’s owed.

Three women, linked by buried secrets, circle the man who unquestioningly accepts the return of his beloved long-dead wife. Kane is happier than he’s ever been, and he’ll do anything to stay that way.

REVIEW:SO CLOSE is the first instalment in Sylvia Day’s contemporary, adult BLACKLIST dark, erotic, suspense, thriller set in the author’s CROSSFIRE world. This is thirty-two-year old, billionaire businessman Kane Black and his wife Lily’s story line.

Told from four first person perspectives (Witte, Amy, Aliyah, Lily) and second person (Lily) SO CLOSE follows the dysfunctional Black / Armand family as they battle one another for control of the family fortune and businesses, businesses built with someone else’s money. Six years earlier, Kane Black’s wife Lily, disappeared and thought to have drowned a few days after their wedding, and in the interim, Kane Black struggled with what happened and why. Six years searching the faces of nameless women who looked like the woman he continued to love ended with the ‘return’ of his wife, a hit and run, and weeks of recovery and rehab. All is not well, Lily is not the woman Kane Black remembers, and the family must now battle someone else for control of Baharan Pharmaceuticals, ECRA+ (Cosmeceuticals) and the Social Creamery Management Agency.

Kane Black has romantacized and idolized his missing wife so much so that no other woman could compare. Women tried, including those he considered family and friends, but the memory of his wife, his Lily, could never be erased, no matter how anybody tried. The unreality of perfection was paramount, her existence was thought to be the madness of a fractured mind. Lily is an enigma-Kane’s obsession a mystery and bewilderment but with her return, more questions arise for everyone involved.

The secondary and supporting characters play a major role throughout the story line often taking the lead perspectives: Kane Black’s siblings Darius Armand and his wife Amy, brother Ramin Armand, and their sister Rosana Armand; their mother Aliyah; Kane’s majordomo and security specialist Nick Witte; Tech specialist Ryan Landon of LanCorp; Drs Goldstein and Hamid, and the return of Gideon and Eva Cross.

Throughout the story Lily talks to herself, about Lily in third person but addresses Kane (to the reader) in second person point of view. We are up close and personal with Lily, Amy, Aliyah and Witte’s thoughts and thought processes-Lily’s thoughts reveal a darkness, an unknown, a secret past that is about to return. Kane Black’s persona and power are revealed through his interactions with, and observations by other characters- Kane’s perception and knowledge all come from second-hand information.

SO CLOSE is a slow building story line; a complex and detailed tale involving many moving and hidden parts following several intersecting pathways and channels. Think ‘SUCCESSION’ but more dysfunctional, darker and dangerous with assassins, espionage, and organized crime, hidden and blatant desperation, infidelity, jealousy and greed, secret lives, obsession and betrayal. The narcissism is strong; the hate is vitriolic and acerbic; the desolation and misery are flagrant; the power and control are dominant. The premise is heavy and intricate; the romance is bewitching; the characters are desperate, determined and dynamic. SO CLOSE ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 28, 2023

Quaid Havery always planned to follow in his father’s footsteps. He went to law school and then came home to take over his dad’s legal practice. Being the only lawyer in small-town Papillon, Quaid is pretty sure he’s seen everything. After all, he was once asked to sue an alligator for defamation of character. He’s prepared for anything the town can throw at him, until he encounters Jayna Cardet. She’s gorgeous, smart, funny, and unlike any woman he’s met before….Except he has.

Jayna never thought she’d return to Papillon, but when her life gets turned around she must learn to live in the close-knit community again. She certainly never dreamed she would practice law in her little town, but she finds herself in the courtroom, and the opposing counsel is her former high school crush, Quaid. It wouldn’t be so bad if the man had developed a beer belly, but Quaid is more handsome than ever. And instead of ignoring her like he did in high school, he’s made it plain that he wants to get to know her.

Thus begins a courtship destined to end in a wedding or a war. Either way, the locals are popping some corn and eagerly awaiting the outcome.

REVIEW: BAYOU BELOVED is the sixth instalment in Lexi Blake’s contemporary, adult BUTTERFLY BAYOU romance series. This is attorneys Quaid Havery, and Jayna Cardet’s story line. BAYOU BELOVED can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives BAYOU BELOVED follows in the wake of the return to Papillon, Louisiana of Jayna Cardet. Jayna wanted our of Papillon, and the trailer in which she was raised but a successful practice in New Orleans ended with an ethical review, a divorce, and her tail tucked between her legs. Hoping to spend a few weeks considering her future, Jayne finds herself representing a few of the local riff-raff, representing against the man she lusted after years before. Enter attorney Quaid Havery, a man whose family has deep roots and even deeper pockets in Papillon, Louisiana, and the man whose heart Jayne is about to destroy. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Jayna and Quaid, and the potential fall-out as Jayna is offered a new opportunity, far away from the man with whom she is falling in love.

Part of Quaid Havery’s family comes from old money, and the snobbery to match rankles many citizens of Papillon Louisiana. His brother Paul’s addictions, and his struggling Hollywood career have followed him home, and the threats are becoming personal for everyone involved. Quaid never expected to fall in love with Jayna Cardet, a woman he cannot remember but the woman with whom he has fallen in love; and Jayna knows that her time in Papillon has an expiry date, an expiry that is reinforced with her family’s history of trailer park trash.

The relationship between Jayna and Quaid begins as opposing council but Jayna quickly finds herself homeless, and living with the man with whom she will fall in love. Jayna’s return to Papillon comes with plenty of baggage, but Quaid’s extended family has baggage of their own. The $ex scenes are passionate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters are interesting and colorful including several locals who are fighting town ordinances and often, one another. We are reintroduced to Roxie and Zep (Bayou Dreaming), Seraphina (Bayou Baby), Lila and Armie (Bayou Butterfly), Sylvie and Rene (Bayou Beauty), Remy Guidry, as well as the introduction of Quaid’s brother Paul, and their mother Marian; Jayna’s sister Sienna, their mother Lissa, Jayna’s ex-husband Todd Shale, as well as several townies, and Judge Brewer.

BAYOU BELOVED is a story of family and dysfunctional relationships; power and money; discrimination and snobbery, acceptance and love. The premise is entertaining and edgy; the romance is tender and compelling; the characters are sassy and animated.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 21, 2023

Danger is stalking Isabeau Boudreaux. After the deaths of her parents ten years ago during a violent attack that left her blind, remnants of her vision are returning. But a series of accidents has convinced her friends the Mackays of Somerset, Kentucky, that someone wants her dead. When a roadside blowout proves to be almost fatal for Isabeau and her good friend Angel, Angel’s brother mercenary Tracker Calloway knows this was no accident.

After a particularly bloody job, the last thing Tracker wants to do is get involved. But whoever is after Isabeau almost hurt his sister, and Isabeau is the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen. Tracker is determined to protect her but knows staying away from Isabeau is impossible. He begins a steady seduction to tempt the innocent woman into a world of hunger like she could have never imagined. And keeping her is the only option—if he can save her from an unknown enemy as her sight begins to slowly return.

•••••

REVIEW:IN ISABEAU’S EYES is the first instalment in Lora Leigh’s contemporary adult KENTUCKY NIGHTS erotic, romantic suspense series-a spin off from the author’s NAUTI series. This is Tracker Calloway, and twenty-five year old high school teacher Isabeau Boudreaux’ story line. You do not have to head read the original NAUTI series but for cohesion and backstory, I recommend reading the aforementioned series.

Told from third person perspective IN ISABEAU’S EYES follows in the wake of another attempt on Isabeau’s life. Ten years earlier someone murdered Isabeau’s parents, but not before shooting our heroine in the head. Blinded by a bullet to the brain, Isabeau would be protected by her half-brother Burke and his extended family in Texas, while befriending the tight knit Mackay family of Kentucky. Fast forward to present day, wherein another attempt on Isabeau’s life, the sixth attempt in a decade, will also threaten the life of Angel Calloway, a young woman with close connections to Natches Mackay.Over protective to a fault, the Mackay family rallies around our story line heroine but Tracker Calloway will lay claim to the woman with whom he will fall in love. What ensues is the search for a killer, as Isabeau’s sight slowly returns.

Tracker Calloway doesn’t do relationships and has warned Isabeau Boudreaux that he will never fall in love but Isabeau wants a chance at a normal life having been babied by her brother and extended family for as long as she can remember . Isabeau is tired of the attempts on her life, often wondering if bad luck is the only luck she will ever know, but someone is targeting our story line heroine, and the Mackay family and friends have a large, extended reach.

The relationship between Tracker and Isabeau begins as a best friend’s, older brother relationship in which Isabeau is friends with Tracker’s foster sister Angel. Tracker’s attraction to Isabeau is immediate and strong but Tracker refuses to get involved with a woman he might not be around to protect. Isabeau wants to feel normal but everyone in her life treats her like glass including her half brother Burke, and US Navy SEALs Saul and Seth August. Isabeau has fallen in love with Tracker Calloway but Tracker has warned Isabeau he’s gone once the killer is found. The $ex scenes are erotic, passionate and intense.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including most of the NAUTI series couples, and the second generation relations. We are introduced to Isabeau’s half brother Burke, and US Navy SEALs Saul and Seth August, and several members of the Reapers MC.

IN ISABEAU’S EYES is a story of obsession and betrayal, family and relationships, acceptance and love. The fast paced premise is intriguing and captivating; the romance is provocative and seductive; the characters are determined, dynamic and energetic.

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Google Play /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 21, 2023

After being forced away for seventeen years, Alice is finally home. But home isn’t what she thought it would be, and every day the secrets she holds from her parents grow with weight. But how do you tell your mother and father that you’re not normal? That the world is a far more dangerous place than they have ever known and you are anything but the small, innocent child that was torn from their arms all those years ago?

Owen can’t say goodbye, and Alice can’t hold on to him tightly enough as the pressures of danger and obligation grow stronger and stronger. With a broken heart, Owen is headed to San Francisco with his crew of musicians. But the Golden City is filled with history and secrets, and brutal deaths are just lying in wait for Owen and his people. To survive these trials and this city, Owen will need everything he has—even the broken parts he gave to Alice—to have any hope of doing the impossible one more time.

••••

Sandy’s Review: HARMONY OF LIES is the second instalment in Brian Feehan’s contemporary, adult, ALICE AND OWEN urban fantasy, romance series focusing on muscian/gatekeeper/Etherialist Owen Brown, and twenty-six year old, Etherialist/ hunter Alice. HARMONY OF LIES can be read as a stand alone but for backstory and cohesion, I recommend reading the series in order.

SOME BACKGROUND: The We have been around since the dawn of time. With seven levels of power, the We walk among the people of Earth but a war between Heaven and H*ll forced the We to choose sides, be it angel or demon, Heaven or H*ll. Etherialists are humans born with ethereal magic, magic that can be used and abused by someone else.

Told from third person perspective HARMONY OF LIES picks up after the events of book one wherein Owen Brown and his fellow musician and Etherialists journey to San Francisco in the wake of a favor for Owen’s uncle Damon but Alice, finally free of the demon who had bonded our heroine at nine years of age, is desperate to reconnect with her family, the family who believe she is dead and gone. With Alice safely in the arms of her family, Owen and his band head to California where two pianos, one played by a ghost, the other that sucks that power and souls from the musician, find Owen on the precipice of losing everything and everyone he has ever loved. Trapped into a nightmare of pain, Owen knows that to beat the dark magic, he will need the woman with whom he has fallen in love.

HARMONY OF LIES is a story of power and control, magic, wizardry and trickery, secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance. Brian Feehan pulls the reader into a dramatic story of family, friendships, relationships and love; a story of prophecy and sorcery, deception and trust. HARMONY OF LIES is a more cohesive and smooth flowing story than its’ predecessor HARMONY OF FIRE but such is the nature of the beast that was the introductory instalment. The premise is musically action packed, intriguing, magical and intense; the characters are energetic, powerful and determined but Alice and Owen spend much of the story line separated, in different parts of the country, as the main focus is on Owen and his band in San Francisco; the romance is passionate but limited and mostly implied.

Barb’s Review:  Harmony of Lies by Brian Feehan is the 2nd book in his Alice & Owen series. Refresher: The We walk among us, beings who existed long before humans ever did, filled with powerful magic. Owen and Alice, who are the main characters in this story, are Etherealist, rare humans who also have magical abilities, which includes music that can change everything. Over the years of being bonded to an evil WE, Alice has learned how to use her powers, especially now that she is free.

Alice, is finally home (17 years later) with her mother and father, trying to find a way to explain to her parents that she is not normal. In the last book, Alice and Owen have fallen in love, and she has become an important member of the group (Clover, Jessie, Max, Daphne) who all have powerful musical abilities.

Owen receives a letter from Mara, to retrieve something in San Francisco, and is despondent that he has to leave with his crew, as Alice wants to stay longer with her family.  He has a hard time saying goodbye, but Alice knows she will find him, when she resolves things with her parents.   Owen and his team, head to San Francisco, knowing that the Golden City is filled with history, secrets, deaths and a mysterious red piano, that will put them all in danger.  He soon knows that he will eventually need Alice’s help to be able to stop a ghost and for all of them to survive.

I really loved all of Owen’s team, including his friend Abel, who lived in San Francisco and would work with them. As noted, I love the entire group, especially Clover. Of course, I adored Alice and Owen, who made such a great couple.  I also liked the newcomer to this book, Jessica, who was the mayor’s daughter. When things get difficult, both Alice and Daphne join them to fight against a dark power.

Harmony of Lies was an exciting, intense story, with wonderful characters that we have come to love.  Owen, Alice and the entire band group were totally loyal to each other, willing to do what was necessary to stop this evil.   Early on, at times the story was a bit confusing, but very intriguing. To say too much more would be spoilers, as you really need to read this, from start to finish.  Harmony of Lies was very well written by Brian Feehan, and I look forward to the next book.

An old wooden ladder led up toward the space Owen had claimed for himself. More importantly, it was private.
“We aren’t going up there tonight.” Owen smiled, and in that smile it was easy to see he had been looking forward to this moment.
“We aren’t going up to your bed? That’s a first. Where are you taking me?”
“This way,” he said, leading beneath the loft and deeper within. They moved past a trove of shovels and tools until she spotted a door she hadn’t used before. Owen pressed hard, and hay and dust fell off the frame as another wave of the night air broke over them both.
“So what’s out here?”
“It’s a surprise. It took a little work, but Max and I finished it this morning.”
Alice’s eyesight adjusted to the low light as Owen shut the barn door behind them. She took a glance around. She had thought this side of the barn was just where the farmer parked his rusted tractor and broken-down truck. Toss in a couple of old oil barrels and some leftover parts, and there wasn’t much to look at, particularly at night. She couldn’t fathom why Owen had brought her out here.
“You know I’m not really a tractor kind of girl. If you’re thinking we are getting kinky on that old thing, you’re far better off taking me back up to the loft.”
Owen laughed, and she felt it down deep.
It was nice spending time with the others, but every time they found a chance to be alone she saw it was easier for Owen to be himself.
“Back here. I set this up for us,” Owen said.
They weaved around an old rusted oil barrel and some empty propane canisters until she spotted a large something covered up by a sheet of old gray plywood and blue tarp.
“It’s not jewelry or a gun. For the record, I like both those things. What is it?” she asked.
“Patience,” he said, letting go of her hand and moving around the side. With practiced ease, Owen spread his long arms and grabbed both the old plywood and tarp beneath. A gentle pull and lift and a large, curved wooden hot tub was uncovered.
“How in the world did you find this? We are in the middle of nowhere.”
“We found it right off. It took some heavy lifting and more than one hour of cleaning. But the real problem was the pump and heater. You like it?” he asked.
“It’s clean?” she asked.
“Of course.” Owen used his foot to flip the metal switch that started the pump. Already there was steam rising into the air.
“And bubbles. Owen, I feel you’re giving me the full treatment.”
Owen didn’t answer.
There was something about the night sky mixed with the back-glow of the barn that framed Owen. He stood there watching her but was lost under the weight of leaving, leaving her. She could see it as clearly as his deep green eyes and strong face.
Owen reached over toward an instant propane heater and clicked it on. She heard the whoosh as gas met spark.
“Owen?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you okay?” she asked.
“I have never met someone like you.”
And I don’t want to say goodbye.
It was his thoughts that drifted in the air between them, but she thought she could hear him and understood his view. For the last couple of weeks, he had made a point of talking about the chaos of his life. How every road traveled twisted and turned, and those devoted to living as a musician changed with every trip. In short, he was saying that now that it was time to leave, this could be the end of their relationship. That he didn’t know where he going, but he was sure he couldn’t come back.
