Sandy’s Review: HARMONY OF FIRE is the first instalment in Brian Feehan’s contemporary, adult, ALICE AND OWEN urban fantasy, romance series focusing on musician/gatekeeper/Etherialist Owen Brown, and twenty-six year old, Etherialist/ hunter Alice.

SOME BACKGROUND: The We have been around since the dawn of time. With seven levels of power, the We walk among the people of Earth but a war between Heaven and H*ll forced the We to choose sides, be it angel or demon, Heaven or H*ll. Etherialists are humans born with ethereal magic, magic that can be used and abused by someone else.

Told from third person perspective following several time lines HARMONY OF FIRE focuses on twenty-six year old Alice as she hunts down the demon that controls her life. At the age of nine, Alice found herself ‘bonded’ to a man named Kerogen, who was using our heroine as his source for power. As a member of the We, Kerogen is a demon, one of the strongest of his kind, and Kerogen is determined to reclaim that which was lost. Alice is on the run, hunting for the creature that took away her free will but Alice is determined to destroy every demon that crosses her path, or has the unfortunate luck to be caught in her sights. Alice never expected to meet Owen Brown, a man she considers just as evil, but a man who can control the gates between Heaven and H*ll. Trying to prevent further destruction, Alice is imprisoned by Owen and his ‘people’, people who have power unlike anything Alice has seen before. What ensues is the building relationship between Owen and Alice, as Owen’s people make plans to take down the man who has bonded himself to our story line heroine.

We are introduced to a large cast of secondary and supporting characters, many of whom are a part of Owen Brown’s life, a life spent in service protecting the gates to the beyond.

HARMONY OF FIRE is a slow building but detailed, complex and focused story of angels and demons, power and abuse, magic and mayhem, Heaven and H*ll. There is an inordinate amount of ‘info dumping’ as the author’s world building introduces the premise, some of the backstory and details as to the who, how and why. Owen Brown is a man whose darkness pulls at his soul, a need to tread the fine line between good and evil, as our hero performs music to relieve the fire that burns from within.

Harmony of Fire by Brian Feehan is the first book in his Alice & Owen series. The We walk among us, beings who existed long before humans ever did, filled with powerful magic. Owen and Alice, who are the main characters in this story, are Etherealist, rare humans who also have magical abilities. We meet Alice, whose soul was bonded to an evil We, when she was nine years old; with the help of a priest, Alice was able to escape. Over the years, she learned how to use her powers, and spends her time to find and kill the man who did this to her; especially since he continues to look for her.

Owen is a musician, who has ability to use his music to reach into the souls of those who listen; he is able to go into the dark roads to heaven and hell. Owen has a wonderful band of young people (I loved most the members, but especially Clover), he is very protective and loyal too; always leaving where they play, when threats are lurking and hunters are too close. One of his band members is underage, and needs protection from others, until she is unbonded when she reaches 18 years old. Owen will take his group to an old friend, where they will be safe; we get to meet some amazing friends of the past, such as Mara, Damon, Cornelius, just to name a few.

Alice, who has become a weapon, enters the bar, where Owen, Mara and others are, and attempts to attack them, thinking they are demons, like the man who forced the bonding on her. They manage to stop Alice, from her attack, controlling her powers, as they imprison her in the basement, until they can prove to her, they are not demons. Owen tries to spend time with Alice, to show her how she was taught wrong, and most of the We are good people, who were being killed by Hunters. In a short time, his attraction to Alice escalates, and slowly she opens up to him, intrigued by his gentle kindness; she too will fall hard for Owen, and learn more about his magical music. When Mara, Damon and Cornelius explain that they might be able to break the bond, Alice begins to open herself up to other possibilities.

I will say that early on, the story was a bit slow and confusing, which in first books of fantasy, is usually normal; by the second half it was very exciting and intriguing. I really loved the chemistry between Owen and Alice. I also loved most of the secondary characters, as Mara, Damon and Cornelius had amazing powers. To say too much more would be spoilers, as you really need to read this, in order to understand. Harmony of Fire is very well written by Brian Feehan, and I look forward to the next book, Harmony of Lies.

“Hey, you! Hey you there! Give me the stamp. I need the stamp!”
Warning bells flitted through Owen’s mind as a long, skinny arm wearing a simple black and gold leather watch knocked down hard on top of the bar. The clasp to the watch faced up, veins and tendons in the wrist creating lines and valleys for his eyes to follow.
He is freaking out! The thought hit him and reverberated through Owen’s body like a siren going off. He is freaking out. Is this where it starts?
“I need the stamp? Wait! What are you? What the hell are you? You’re not one of the owners? I don’t care. I need protection. Where is the owner?” His voice was fast, and drove in like a ram’s horns, twisting Owen’s gut.
The stranger’s hand reversed from pressing flat and open into a tightened fist, demanding satisfaction. Owen looked from the fist to the stranger’s face.
A sea of humans enjoying the music, atmosphere, or simply wanting drinks framed the new customer. Air in motion stilled as Owen looked, examined, studied. Owen made mental notes of the creature speaking, in case he ever might have a need to find him again.
Five foot eight, on the thin side, black hair parted to the left, wrinkles around the eyes, oval face, nose slightly long, not overly bulbous. Asian American, most likely. Well dressed, in a gray suit, open-collar white shirt, expensive material. Appearance ruffled, sweat around the rim of his hair.
Blue underglow shading just beneath the right eye, as well as along the right jawline. A level two and very frightened.
One of the creatures before earth. One of the We who had celebrated with God, before their choice between going to war, or staying here… One of the We.
Frightened always means deadly when it comes to the We. He doesn’t know who I am. I have to give him something he can hold on to. Be the bartender.
“Hello, sir. Aurei is one of the owners and she just went to the back. She will be out in a moment, and she can help you with what you are looking for. My name is Owen. How about while you wait, I get you a drink, something cold? You look thirsty.”
A patron to the We’s left spoke up. “Hey, I have been waiting for like ten minutes, and this guy just walks in here and you’re going to help him? This is bull. I have girls waiting on me. I was next.”
“Quiet, you fool!” the level two commanded, striking out by infusing his voice with ethereal energy.
Owen watched the wave of words fan out, slamming hard into the patron who had spoken like a blow to the throat. Instantly the patron’s windpipe closed, but the choking didn’t make a sound. The wave of spoken power rippled past like a stone in a pond, silencing those gathered nearest as well.
The power shattered against Owen’s own protection. Like the itch, the protection was a byproduct of ethereal energy stored within, and Owen had more than most.
I hate level twos. They don’t know their ass from their elbow.
Owen’s right hand moved out to the side, with the message Hold. I have this. A clear sign for both Clover and Jessie, who were looking his way.
The release of power in the air was like a foghorn going off to anyone with ethereal power inside the building.
Using the white cooler, Owen stepped up and in one smooth motion leaped over the bar, one hand touching the thick, polished wood for balance as he slipped himself into the small gap that had formed.
The maneuver created reactions but Owen ignored them all, focusing on the thin We with the specs and the human patron who could no longer breathe.

REVIEW:A RIP THROUGH TIME is the first instalment in Kelley Armstrong’s adult A RIP THROUGH TIME time travel, mystery series focusing on thirty year old, Vancouver, Canada Police Detective Mallory Atkinson, and undertaker/investigator Dr. Duncan Gray.

Told from first person perspective (Mallory) A RIP THROUGH TIME follows Detective Mallory Atkinson on a journey through time. In the spring of 2019 while visiting her ailing grandmother in Edinburgh Scotland, thirty year old, Vancouver British Columbia, Canada police detective Mallory Atkinson is attacked in an alley only to wake up as a nineteen year old housemaid in the year 1869, a housemaid who was also attacked and left for dead in the same alley where Mallory was found. A RIP THROUGH TIME is a fascinating story of mystery and suspense with a little bit of paranormal, time travel added to the mix. Having worked most of her adult life in the Vancouver police department, Mallory aka Catriona is the perfect foil for Dr. Gray, an undertaker and amateur investigator, who with the help of our heroine, begins to break down the clues and mystery surrounding a potential serial killer. The premise is intriguing and captivating; the characters are dynamic; the romance is virtually non-existent. My only complaint, is the easy and immediate acceptance, by the main characters, of time-travel and physical possession of some one else’s body but such is the nature of the paranormal/time travel story line.

SHADOW FIRE is the seventh instalment in Christine Feehan’s contemporary, adult SHADOW RIDERS erotic, paranormal, series focusing on the Ferraro Crime Family. This is Shadow Rider Elie Archambault, and Brielle Couture’s story line. SHADOW FIRE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise including bondage, discipline, D/s scenarios, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

SOME BACKGROUND: The Shadow Rider male must find his mate –a woman who is capable of riding the shadows-or at the very least with the ability to bear children with the shadow-riding gene. Within the family, the Ferraro siblings are tasked with finding a mate, fated by DNA, who is capable of continuing the family line. People with the ability to ride the shadows are few and far between, and future generations are at risk if no mates are found with the shadow-riding gene. The Ferraro’s are also part of the Chicago Underworld-a crime family linked to both legal and criminal activity.

Told from third person perspectives SHADOW FIRE focuses on the arrange marriage between Shadow Rider Elie Archambault, and Brielle Couture. As a child, Elie Archambault had been passed from family to family while training to ride the shadows in Europe, finally finding peace in America, befriended by the Ferraro family, becoming one of their own but an arranged marriage with a European shadow rider meant potentially spending his life with someone he could never love until his fantasies came true with the arrival of Brielle Couture, the woman that has starred in all of his dreams. Brielle Couture wanted nothing to do with our story line hero, having fallen victim to his verbal assaults, and emotional attacks years before, leaving her a shell of her former self. Battling between head and heart, Brielle was desperate to nullify their unwanted betrothal but when the truth is revealed, Brielle finds herself with the man meant especially for her. As every shadow rider manifested their own particular talent and skill, our heroine knows she is more than adept at computer research and discovery, and her research is about to reveal a possible connection between the take down of a human trafficking ring, and another ring succeeding back home. The relationship between Brielle and Elie is an enemies to lovers; a fated but tempestuous and embattled love affair destroyed by words said in anger that leave our heroine humiliated and broken, attacking her already fragile self-esteem. Brielle’s appearance has changed in the years since Elie last saw the woman with whom he will fall in love, a change caused by the caustic and vitriol spewed by our story line hero. As Elie sets into motion a plan to seduce the woman he married, Brielle must consider if Elie is the man with whom she wants to spend the rest of her life. The $ex scenes are passionate, erotic, and intense with scenes of bondage, discipline and D/scenarios.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including most if not all of the previous story line couples, and their expanding families, as well as Valentino’s cousin and right hand man Dario. The requisite evil has many faces.

SHADOW FIRE is a story of family and relationships, betrayal and vengeance, power and control, obsession and love. The premise is gritty, emotional and captivating; the romance is fated and seductive; the characters are energetic, dynamic, powerful and captivating.

Shadow Fire by Christine Feehan is the 7^th book in her fantastic Shadow Riders series. Elie Archambault is the hero in this story, as we met him in a few previous books, being best friends with Emme, as well as part of the Ferraro Shadow Rider family. Elie is set to marry a woman he never met, being an arranged marriage, and he is shocked to see the woman he loved from the past is his new bride.

Brielle Couture, our heroine, is equally as shocked, when she discovers that Elie is the man she is marrying. We learn that a number of years ago, Elie was being pushed to marry Brielle by his Archambault family, and when he refused, he said some terrible things about her; unfortunately, Brielle overheard what he said, and has never forgotten. Elie did try to explain that he did not mean what he said to his uncle at that time, but Brielle wanted nothing to do with him. Brielle left her family and learned how to make herself a shadow rider, not to mention she was an amazing computer hacker.

When Brielle tries to back away from marrying Elie, she learns some truths about her family, who lied to her, and with help from Stefano, she agrees to through with the marriage. Privately, Brielle always had feelings for Elie, as he did her; but Elie will need to convince Brielle that she has always been the one for him. Over a short period of time, their Elie and Brielle relationship will heat up, and their sizzling chemistry was off the wall. Brielle’s life is in danger, as someone is targeting her; with Elie and the Ferraro/Saldi family trying to protect her, as well as find out why. We learn how good Brielle is in her computer hacking skills, which is part of the reason someone is trying to eliminate her; she becomes a very big asset to the family, with her ability to go beyond discovering hidden secrets.

Shadow Fire was an exciting, tense, heart pounding, nonstop edge of your seat action, from start to finish. Their romance was very steamy and I did love Elie and Brielle together. I loved seeing all the Ferraro family again, as they all played a big part in this story line. I did get a kick out of Dario, who has become a fantastic addition; it should be fun to see if he finds a woman that could handle him.

Christine Feehan once again gives us a fabulous story, which was a great read, and very well written. I will note there were a lots of sex scenes. If you have not read this series, you need to start with the first book. If you have read them all, you will love this one.

“You sure you want to go through with this marriage of yours?” Dario asked Elie. “You haven’t even seen this woman.”
“Yes.” Elie’s reply was clipped, indicating he didn’t want to continue the discussion.
Dario sighed. “Since I can’t talk you out of it, at least come to the club tonight. It’s your last night of freedom before you’re stuck with some woman who might have a fucking headache every night.”
“Dario.” Emmanuelle sat up straight, glaring at him in protest.
“Some men have certain needs, Emme,” Dario said, shrugging. “I’m not going to pretend I don’t, and I won’t apologize for who I am. Arranged marriages for business or otherwise rarely work for someone like me because the woman isn’t going to like who they get. I’m just being honest.”
“You’re suggesting that Elie go out to a kink club the night before he marries. Is that very honorable?” Emmanuelle demanded.
“It’s a moot point,” Elie interrupted the argument.
Emmanuelle was the tie that bound the two men together. Elie regarded her as a sister. He had grown up an only child, moving from one household to another in his native France. Elie and Emme had clicked some years earlier and everyone expected them to marry when he’d come to the United States. Emmanuelle’s heart was already taken by Valentino Saldi, Dario’s cousin. Elie loved Emme but there had only ever been a sibling relationship between them.
Dario had come to love her through his relationship with Valentino. Who couldn’t love Emmanuelle? Dario wasn’t an easy man to be around. He had served as Valentino’s bodyguard for years. He rarely talked to anyone outside the circle of people he accepted as family. Elie felt lucky to be included. The Ferraros had a way of taking over those they chose to bring into their inner circle and Dario, like Elie, had found his way in when Emmanuelle had married Val.
“A moot point?” Emme repeated, raising an eyebrow suspiciously.
Elie held up his left hand, where a ring circled his finger. “Technically, I’m already married. The lawyers took care of the paperwork and we were married by proxie yesterday. I signed here. She signed in France. So, no kink club, but thank you for the offer, Dario. It was considerate. I don’t cheat on my wife.”
“What does she look like?” Dario asked.
Elie shrugged. “I have no idea. The lawyers took care of it. I didn’t even look at the papers. I signed on the dotted line and walked away. I presume she did the same. She’ll be here tomorrow and we’ll have a very brief private ceremony just for the sake of photos and formality, but the paperwork is already done.”
Emmanuelle brushed her hand down his arm. “Congratulations, Elie. I hope she makes you very happy. I know you believe you can make this work.”
Dario’s dark brows drew together. “Won’t understand you in a million years, Elie. This complete stranger comes into your life. You don’t know a thing about her and you expect your marriage to work. Emme is one in a million. Maybe one in a billion. Odds could be even higher than that. Val is so fuckin’ lucky, he doesn’t even know how lucky he is.”
He stated his opinion without looking at Emmanuelle and he spoke in a flat, matter-of-fact tone. “I’m aware a man like me is never going to find a woman who can put up with my . . . proclivities.” He shrugged. “But then I don’t trust anyone enough to have more than an hour encounter with them and only on my terms, especially now that Valentino forced me to take over this idiotic role in the family. He’s only made my suspicious nature worse.”
“Your point being?” Elie said.
“You’re like me.”
Elie couldn’t deny it. Maybe he wasn’t exactly like Dario. He wasn’t nearly as dark. He didn’t know too many people who were. Dario had demons. Elie liked his way and he knew how to get it. He already knew he intended for his bride to learn that lesson about him very quickly. He’d been honest in every answer he’d given to the questions asked of him when filling out the pages and pages of very explicit material needed for his arranged marriage. Told from third person perspective THAT COWBOY OF MINE follows in the wake of Dillon Young finding a hung over and injured Cal Bennett in one of her fields. Unable to remember what happened or how he go there, former bull rider Cal Bennett offers to work as a ranch hand, someone of whom Dillon is desperate since the walk out of most of her help. Dillon Young inherited the Bar 4 Ranch from her late aunt Dolly but in the ensuing time the neighbor Hank Stephens has insisted Dillon sell the ranch. Refusing to bend to Hank’s demands, Dillon finds herself the victim of several attacks, and if not for our hero, Dillon’s life would have already been lost. What ensues is the slow building romance and relationship between Dillon and Cal, and the potential fall-out as issues of trust force Cal out of Dillon’s life, ensuring our heroine is an easy target for the people desperate to take control of the Bar 4 Ranch.

We are introduced to ranch hands Emmett Perkins, Dusty and Freddy Miller; neighbor Hank Stephens, attorney Isaac Gomez, Ranger Chet Thompson, and Sheriff Felps.

THAT COWBOY OF MINE is a story of power, greed, betrayal and vengeance. The premise is entertaining-the suspense is limited as most of the people responsible are revealed early in the story; the characters are wounded but spirited; the romance is intimate but limited and slow to develop.

Chapter ThreeCal frowned at the mention of the Ivy Ridge Ranch. “Do you really think a man like Hank Stephens would resort to shooting you just to get your ranch?”
“When you put it like that, no,” Dillon admitted. “He’s an ass, but I don’t think he’s a killer.”
“Then again, he has let it be known he wants your place.”
Dillon didn’t respond until she had taken a left turn and straightened the wheel. “The Bar 4 is only fifteen hundred acres. Hank’s place is four times that size. Though, he has been buying up other ranches and property in the area for years.”
“I should tell you I know Hank.”
“Of course, you do,” Dillon said with a roll of her eyes.
Cal turned his head to her. “Just because I know him doesn’t mean I’m helping him or whoever is after your ranch. I’m not. I give you my word.”
“I don’t know you, Mr. Bennett.”
“And yet, you hired me.”
A beat of silence passed before she said, “So, I did.”
“If I were working for someone else, would I have saved your life this morning?”
Dillon shrugged and blew out a breath. “I don’t know.”
Cal let the topic drop. It was obvious that Dillon was weary and scared, though she hid it well. If he hadn’t witnessed the shooting, he probably wouldn’t have believed the situation was so serious. Individuals and companies tried to acquire huge swaths of land all the time. Few millionaires and billionaires didn’t own land. Cal could well see Hank trying to purchase the Bar 4. But Hank wouldn’t try to kill Dillon for it.
“What else has happened?” Cal asked.
Dillon glanced at him, a frown furrowing her brow. “What?”
“Besides the attempt on your life, what else has transpired? Emmett referenced that things couldn’t keep happening.”
They reached the edge of town. Dillon slowed when she came to the stop sign and waited for her turn before continuing through town. “Small things.”
“Like?” Cal pushed.
Her nostrils flared, showing her irritation. “The gate being open sometime last night and the prized quarter horse stallion I just purchased—Legacy— getting out. A feed container I inspected the day before and found clean filled with rats. Fences that had just been checked ending up cut with cattle getting loose.”
“Do you think it’s someone working for you?”
“What?” she asked incredulously, jerking her head to him. “No. Absolutely, not.”
“You said you lost a couple of workers. Could they be to blame?’
She shook her head. “I saw the letters they received. Whoever sent them told the men to stop working for me or their families would be harmed. They didn’t want to take the chance, so they quit.”
“They could have written the letters themselves.”
“It’s a possibility I’ve considered, but they aren’t the only ones who received them. Everyone who works for me got one.”
Cal rubbed his right temple. “It sounds like someone is trying to make it impossible for you to run your ranch.”
“That’s exactly what they’re doing. I’ve sunk a lot of money into the new stallion. My aunt founded a breeding program that has sustained the ranch far better than cattle ever did. I’m continuing it. Without that stallion, I can’t recoup the money I invested.”
“Not to mention losing two workers, getting rid of the rats, and constantly fixing fence that was purposefully cut.”
She slowed again and put her blinker on to pull into the parking area in front of Ike’s. “Exactly.”
Cal pointed to his ten-year-old black Chevy Z71, the only vehicle in the parking lot. He waited until Dillon parked beside it before saying, “Whoever wants your ranch must not want to wait for you to throw in the towel. That’s the only reason I can think of for things to have escalated to the shooting this morning.”
“I wasn’t supposed to be in that part of the ranch. I was there looking for Legacy,” she said as she met his gaze.
“You think someone let the stallion loose so you would look for him?”
“I do.”
“How would they know where you would go?”
She shrugged and rested both hands on the steering wheel. “I’m the one who found the gate open. The horse would’ve had to go through two pastures to get to the other side of the ranch. It was a clear shot to where I went, which is why I chose it. I called Emmett to let him know what was going on.”
“But you told him you didn’t see any tracks.”
“I saw them leading toward the area you were in. After that, nothing.”
“So, that’s why you said I attempted to steal a horse.”
She twisted her lips. “Oh, you definitely did. Your mistake was trying to take Houdini. No matter what we’ve used to secure his stall, he always gets out. We leave it open if he wants to go in, but he prefers to remain in the pasture at night. I should also point out that he’s not let anyone ride him since Dolly died. Somehow, you managed to get a bridle on him and a saddle out.”
“Well, hell,” Cal said as he looked away, embarrassed. Her words jogged a faint memory of him struggling to get a halter on a horse. “I thought for sure that was a dream. Every time I put the saddle blanket on the horse and turned to get the saddle, I’d turn back around, and it would be on the ground.”
“That’s Houdini.”
He inwardly grimaced. “I’ve never stolen anything in my life. I’ve also never been that drunk. Please accept my sincerest apologies.”
She faced forward and sighed. “You don’t have to return to the ranch.”
Cal was shocked by her words. “But you just hired me.”
“Because Emmett was making a big deal of things.”
“I was there, Ms. Young. It was a big deal.”
Her head swiveled to him. “Call me Dillon. And it doesn’t matter who is around or where I am. If someone wants to kill me, they’re going to do it. You and I both know that.”
Anger sliced through Cal. “The hell they will.”
“You’re one man. What are you going to do?”
“Keep you safe.”

REVIEW:GO HEX YOURSELF by Jessica Clare is a stand alone, adult contemporary, paranormal romance story line focusing on five hundred year old warlock Ben Magnus, and twenty-five year old, familiar Regina ‘ Reggie’ Johnson.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Reggie and Ben) GO HEX YOURSELF follows twenty five year old Regina ‘Reggie’ Johnson as she finds herself working for Drusilla, a woman who claims to be a two thousand year old witch. Thinking she had answered an ad to work for her favorite card game, Reggie struggles to accept the existence of magic until spells are cast and she finds herself on the receiving end of a feline enchantment but it is the presence of her new boss’s nephew that has Reggie reconsidering the job when the truth is revealed, until their mutual attraction can no longer be denied. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Ben and Reggie, and the potential fall out when Dru everyone believes Dru has been targeted by a powerful witch.

The relationship between Reggie and Ben begins acrimoniously when Ben struggles to accept Reggie into their lives. Reggie is considered to be a ‘rogue familiar’, not part of the organization of professional familiars, and as such often finds herself on the outside looking in with other witches and warlocks but time spent together to find a cure for Drusilla means working side by side allowing the head to follow what the heart has always wanted. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and eccentric secondary and supporting characters including Reggie’s former roommate and friend Nick; Maurice, the black cat; Drusilla’s current but pregnant familiar Lisa; Gwen a former familiar, and Willem, a difficult warlock who may or may not be able to assist Ben and Reggie in their path going forward.

GO HEX YOURSELF is a story of magic and power, secrets and lies, deception and love. The premise is entertaining; the romance is seductive; the characters are desperate, magical and energetic…but I did struggle with the quick resolution to several conflicts, as well as a number of red herrings that had very little to do with the over all premise.

I turn to look at Lisa, and as I do, I suck in a breath at the sight of a glowering god standing in the doorway to the room. The man there looks . . . intense. He’s impossibly tall, with broad shoulders that would put a linebacker to shame. He’s dressed in a black suit with a black shirt underneath, complete with black tie, and his hair is dark and just brushes his collar. The long, solemn face is unsmiling, his expression stern, but his mouth is full and pink and shocking against the paleness of his skin.”Who are you?” he asks bluntly, ignoring Lisa and looking right at me.

“Hello,” I gush, extending my hand and moving forward. “I’m Reggie Johnson, here about the job. I’m such a big fan of . . .”

The tall man gives me an up-and-down look and then dismisses me as if I’m unimportant. He turns to Lisa and holds out a piece of paper. “I need these books from the library. Today. And did you file those requests I asked for?”

“I’ll get to them,” Lisa says tersely. She deliberately rubs her belly and glares at the man, who glares back.

Well, this is awkward. I tuck my hands back down to my sides and glance between the two of them. I truly hope that this isn’t going to be my boss, because yikes. Hot but pissy.

The man casts another imperious look in my direction and then points a finger at Lisa. “Get it done, today.” He turns on his heel and leaves without acknowledging me, and then he’s gone.

Lisa sticks her tongue out at his back. “Such a dick.”

My mouth has gone dry. “Is that . . . Mr. Magnus?” If so, my boss has a stunningly handsome (and stunningly dickish) husband.

“Sure is.”

I divert my attention to what looks like a stack of bills shoved under a book, and my hands twitch with the need to clean up. “Does Mr. Magnus work for his wife?”

Her eyes widen, and then she chuckles. “Oh no. That’s a Mr. Magnus, but he’s not married to Dru. He’s her nephew and between assistants himself, so I’m having to fill in.” She leans toward me confidentially. “No one likes him. Can’t keep anyone in his employ.”

My smile returns. “I’m good at multitasking.” I’m also a huge suck-up.

Lisa snaps her fingers and then pulls out her phone. “While I’m thinking about it, I had a few questions for you.”

“Oh, of course.” I read a book last night on interview questions one could expect for a fast-paced job, so I’m more than ready for this. I do wonder when we’re going to get to the sit-down part of the interview, but maybe Lisa’s just doing introductions before I meet her boss. That makes sense, and I give her a practiced “I’m very interested” look. “Ask away.”

She flicks through her phone with her thumb. “Any allergies, food or otherwise?”

“No.” Weird, but maybe I’d be in charge of getting coffee or grocery shopping or something. Some assistants do that, don’t they? “Do you need to write this down? Should I take notes for you?” I dig in my purse, pulling out a notepad and pen. “I’m happy to do so.”

“Not necessary.” Lisa taps something on her phone, and I’m pretty sure I hear game music. She stares at the screen for a moment and then looks back at me. “Star sign?”

Getting weirder. “Taurus.”

“Ah, a hard worker and stubborn.” She dimples, nodding. “She’ll like that. Tauruses are great employees. Very easy to work with.”

“Thank . . . you?”

“Too bad Mr. Magnus is a Cancer. Very moody.” She makes a face, still locked onto her phone. “Here we go. Any particular crystal affinity?” She gestures at one of the shelves, and I notice for the first time that there are rows and rows of crystals of all shapes and sizes in glass containers. Not in any sort of order, of course, but I’m sure I can help with that, too.

“Um, I don’t think so?” This is definitely verging on fully weird territory. I’m starting to get a little uneasy, but I glance around the office again. Maybe this woman is some kind of new-age hipster that needs inspiration to work on the game? “What do crystals have to do with the position?”

“A lot. Blood type?”

“Is that really important?” I ask finally, resisting the urge to show my frustration.

“Not necessarily,” Lisa admits. “But Ms. Magnus likes to know.”

“I’m an O.”

“Wonderful.”

REVIEW: LOVER ARISEN is the twentieth instalment in JR Ward’s contemporary, adult BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD paranormal, romance series focusing on the elite group of vampire warriors known as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. This is Band of B&stards warrior Balthazar, son of Hanst, and Caldwell New York homicide detective Erika Saunders’ story line. LOVER ARISEN can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but for back story and cohesion, I recommend reading the series in order or the previous book Lover Unveiled where Balz and Erika’s story begins. Balthazar is desperate to rid himself of the demon known as Devina, a demon who has taken possession of our story line hero in the wake of our hero’s last robbery and theft. Balthazar is desperate to locate the Book of Spells in the hopes of uncovering the how and why of his current predicament but a trip to a local bookstore has Balthazar, once again, coming face to face with the woman that calls to his heart, a woman who has seen more than anyone could have ever imagined. Enter Caldwell homicide detective Erika Saunders, and the woman/female with whom Balthazar will fall in love but not before Balz sacrifices himself to stop the insanity of Devina’s possession. REVIEW:Book four in the Noble Hearts Series, I get the impression you don’t need to read the previous books in this series (I haven’t).It’s a tale of mystery and intrigue and a little romance, of lost loves and maybe a second chance at happiness.

Honora made a mistake years ago, and she paid for it…

When I first read about our FMC (Female Main Character) I thought her immature, selfish and shallow! But following her through her story, you get to know her better, and had to admire her in the end.

Benjamin doing his duty to king and country comes home to find his betrothed had not only jilted him, then taken her own life! Continuing his duty to the Royal family has Benjamin enjoying the intrigue, his mother wants him to settle down, but losing one lady love has him not wanting to experience the pain again!

We jump three years and Honora has a quiet life, bringing up her son. No one knows her, and so she moves back home to be with her family, but in doing so, brings her face to face with the one man she couldn’t forget! Benjamin is shocked to see what looks like his dead betrothed riding one day, hunting down the ghost of his past, he’s shocked to find out the ghost is real!

How can you forgive someone who not only disgraced themselves, but you as well? In this period of time ladies of society weren’t given the same rights as we have today. Dignity and propriety were everything, so being jilted was a big thing.
He can’t understand why she didn’t just tell him!

It’s a shortish read (13 chapters just over 200 pages) and apparently it’s an extended version from an anthology. Maybe that’s why it feels a little rushed in parts! And that’s why I couldn’t really connect with the characters.

It is a little rushed in places, it also feels like a few things needed exposing more (a little more detail about a certain few things that happened in the book)But I still enjoyed the intrigue, I liked how Benjamin wanted to do his duty to his country, but also to Honora.

So can this pair find a second chance at happiness? Can Benjamin find and apprehend the person wanting to steal from the royal family?
And will Honora be able to finally be free of her past?

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Anna: I grew up in a single parent household in the South during a time when our society was challenged by constant change and opportunity. Luckily, we had family in the area, because childcare as we know it today, was rare. It was a boon to me my grandmother (who died shortly after I turned six), began teaching me to read before I started kindergarten. Reading and writing quickly became two of my favorite past times. I particularly enjoyed books with happily-ever-after and mysteries, two things you will often find in my stories.

I was fortunate to have an exciting Human Resources career and while I still do consulting, and related things, I have more time to write and be there for my two young granddaughters, my husband, and my pets. In fact, I have two rather spoiled dogs, a Parson’s Russell Terrier, and a Cockapoo. Both have found their way into my stories, which I love.

My writing career started a few years ago, but while it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever tackled, it’s the most fun career I’ve ever had!

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Anna:My maternal grandmother (whom I’ve already mentioned) and my mother, who would read with me when she got home from her second-shift job. She went to school full time to get her teaching degree and worked fulltime afterwards and was a tremendous influence in my life. She also influenced my style of writing, because she would sit with me when I had massive writing homework and give me pointers on how to write.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties did you encounter writing and publishing this story?

Anna:This was one of those stories that had to be written. I cannot say there was much difficulty. The story practically wrote itself every time I sat behind my desk, and it quickly became one of my favorites.

TRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of My Lord, My Rogue?

Anna:A saying my husband is fond of saying gave me inspiration for the book. It goes: You can never know what is going on in someone else’s life unless you are standing in their shoes. This story follows (book 3) The Duke’s Golden Rings, and without giving away the plotlines for each, I will say the heroine in My Lord, My Rogue was the foundation for The Duke’s Golden Rings. Additionally, the heroine’s character in this fourth book of the series gets a chance at redemption. These two books are the two most closely tied stories in the series, although each one of them can be read as a stand-alone.

TRC: What kind of research/plotting did you do, and how long did you spend researching /plotting before beginning My Lord, My Rogue?

Anna:I would describe myself as a pantser. I have never enjoyed plotting things to the “nth degree,” and don’t even try anymore. Once I establish the main theme of the story, I do try to come up with a secondary plot—which is usually some sort of mystery or intrigue. I research the main historic points and then, LOTS throughout the story writing. If I speak about flowers, I have researched the genre of including the events that I include in the story, Once I have the hero and the heroine well-defined in my mind and a skeleton of the story in my head, I begin to write, and the story materializes.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the NOBLE HEARTS series?

Anna:At this time, I think there will be two more stories in the Noble Hearts series. There are some characters that are begging for their own stories.

TRC: Is any of the story line premise based in fact?

Anna:Parts of these stories are based on historical fact. For example, in My Lord, My Rogue, Queen Catherine visited Bath, and I used that visit for part of the storyline.

TRC: Do you have any interest in writing, or have you ever written for another genre? Contemporary romance?

Anna:I have not considered Contemporary romance, although I have considered Edwardian and Victorian. I already write Civil War era, so it will not be a very large leap.

TRC: Believability is an important factor in writing story lines especially stories with a historical feature. How do you keep the story line believable? Where do you think some author’s fail?

Anna:I focus on keeping things consistent with the way of life during the period I write, and my manuscripts are edited for consistency, including expressions and other things that can take the readers out of the story. I read a lot of books and find that some authors do not edit closely enough for these things. These types of problems could throw a reader out of the story.

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

Anna:Definitely! I think the cover and the blurb play important parts in selecting the story. I use a wonderful cover editor.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Anna:A little of both! I’ll have an idea of where we are going and as I start writing, the characters will take me in a different direction. This happens so often! I think it’s very common, especially with pantsers.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Anna:I try to bring the reader in within the first few pages with a lot of colorful description, emotion that a reader can readily identify with or be interested in, and an entertaining storyline.

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Anna:I love having music in the background; however, it’s usually some mix of songs that I enjoy for the motivation and the uplift of the beat of the music. If there is any influence, it is motivation that keeps me writing. There is nothing really associated with the story being written.

What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

Anna:I’m not sure it’s the biggest misconception, but one fallacy is that writing is their only career, when many have had other careers before turning to writing—or work another job in order to write. I had a robust career in human resources before ever starting to write.

TRC: What is something that few, if anyone, know about you?

Anna:This is a tough question. I’m very much a ‘what you see is what you get’ kind of person. As a child, I was an early entrepreneur and used to do things to make money, during a time when things were tight in my home. I created a bike repair shop in my garage and taught myself to fix tires, gears, broken chains, and things like that. I would put handmade flyers in mailboxes to drum up business. I even built a bike out of pieces of old bike pieces and painted it for my mother, hoping she would conquer her fear and learn to ride. Mom loved that I built the bike for her but could never bring herself to learn to ride it. True story.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Anna:I’m writing my second book in the Lyon’s Den Connected World Series, a series by Dragonblade Publishing. Lyon’s Prey was the first book I wrote in the series.

REVIEW: Historical Romance with a hint of magic and I’m there.

This book did remind me a little of Outlander and The Discovery of Witches (with the time travel) but also a film that I love (Ladyhawke) but that’s where the similarities end.

A book I couldn’t put down once I started, really well thought out and written. Descriptions of the scenery had me easily imagining myself walking alongside Gavin and Dani. Loved the Scottish dialect and its usage in the book (some authors don’t use it correctly, and for me spoils the read.)

Gavin is the Laird of his small clan, he became the Laird after his father became mad after a curse settles on his clan! A lot of the villagers left (frightened off) so Gavin is working hard to restore both his name and reputation. Gavin is such a solid character, he’s frightened and angry at the curse, but he’s trying to live his life as normally as he can (a little hard when you turn into a hawk as the sun rises!)

Dani is our time travelling damsel. But the only distress she had was getting back to her own time, oh and avoiding marriage to Gavin! She’s an English literature professor from the 21st century, a no nonsense woman who had me in stitches with her wit and inner dialogue. Being thrown back in time would unsettle most people, and it certainly keeps Dani on her toes.

Lady MacRae is the villain in this book, casting spells and doing her best to keep the marriage from happening. She cast the curse after Gavin. I did feel a little sorry for her, and at times I wanted her to repent and change (if she does that you’ll need to read the book) but we also need a good villain to boo and hiss at, and Wilona more than adequately fit that remit.

Reading about this pair did have me chuckling as you watch them skirt around their feelings for one another. Can Gavin tell Dani about his predicament without scaring her away? Will Dani want to stay in a world that has no wifi, no lighting and no running hot water? Can the pair break the curse? Can they live as man and wife, or will Dani be forced to live a half life with her”hawk” husband?

This is the first book in a new series, and although I’ve not read this author or any of her previous books, I’m adding this series to my “watch for” list.

Vonda Sinclair: I live in beautiful North Carolina but my favorite place to travel is bonny Scotland. I haven’t visited since 2017, so I’m really starting to miss it. Writing stories set in Scotland is always a great joy. My hobbies include gardening and amateur photography.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Vonda Sinclair: Several years ago, before I started writing romance, I was addicted to reading it. I loved all types… historical, paranormal, contemporary, etc. One day I thought… I wonder if I could create characters and write a story. Writing romance novels started as an experiment but became a huge part of my life and a wonderful career. I became obsessed with words and how they sound together, how they evoke images and emotions. I love to create a story world full of characters and experiences for readers.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties did you encounter writing and publishing this story?

Vonda Sinclair: I experienced a lot of stress in 2020 and 2021 for obvious reasons, as I’m sure everyone has. The stress, lack of focus, and difficulty concentrating hampered my creativity and inspiration. The book took much longer than it should have to complete. I hope I can keep going with a good momentum. In addition, I’m writing part time now instead of full time due to other responsibilities.

TRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of DREAMING OF A DEVILISH HIGHLANDER?

Vonda Sinclair: The basic premise is can true love break a curse? Most of my stories are based on the healing power of love.

When Gavin MacTavish and his party are attacked in the forest on the way home, they’re forced to defend themselves or die. Unfortunately, the man Gavin kills is the son of a witch. Literally. She places curses on Gavin and his two friends. Gavin’s life becomes a living hell. Help comes in the form of a modern day woman. Dani has a wonderful career as a professor and a good life, but she cannot find love until she falls into the past. They complement and contrast each other in many ways. This story has a lot of steam and humor.

TRC: What kind of research/plotting did you do, and how long did you spend researching /plotting before beginning DREAMING OF A DEVILISH HIGHLANDER?

Vonda Sinclair: I’m always researching when I write. I like to get specific about which foods were eaten in Scotland in the early 1600s. When the characters move about the castles, details of what they’re seeing and experiencing are important. For instance, how the windows worked, how the door locks operated. What does it feel like and smell like in a castle dungeon? I’ve been fortunate to have explored several Scottish castles, both ruins and inhabited ones. This research has been invaluable for getting the details right. When I write rough draft, I don’t always include all the specifics. I’ll research the exact detail I need on later drafts. It helps that I’ve written several books set between 1618 and 1630. A lot of it sticks in my mind, and I might only have to go back and double check something. For instance, sending a missive back then required several more steps than writing a letter or email today. Everything was done differently four-hundred years ago, and I like to give readers a sense of what that was like.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Vonda Sinclair: I plan to do three books, stories about Gavin, Torr, and Brodie. Of course, I could come up with a creative excuse to add more. One of my other series, Highland Adventure, has ten books so far and I’m not finished with the series. Secondary characters keep demanding their own stories which is wonderful fun.

TRC: Believability is an important factor in writing story lines especially stories with a paranormal premise-readers like to think ‘what if?’. How do you keep the story line believable? Where do you think some author’s fail?

Vonda Sinclair: For me, believability comes from specific details, which ties into research. You have to make the story feel real by inserting the reader into the story, making them experience every aspect of the world you’ve created. Sensory details are important and so are historical setting details. Scotland has changeable, tempestuous weather, and I like to include it when I can. I would include emotions here too. Help the reader to feel exactly what the character is feeling. For paranormal elements, show how and why something so farfetched is really possible. In other words, the explanation is shown in vivid detail. In any type of story, the author has to convince the reader to suspend disbelief. I suppose this is done via the author’s craft, skill, experience, intuition, creativity, etc.

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

Vonda Sinclair: Yes, it does for me. I’m sure a lot of readers feel the same way. Most people ignore the old adage of don’t judge a book by its cover.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Vonda Sinclair: I would say it’s a little of both in my case. Sometimes a scene will come to me almost fully formed. Other times, I’ll brainstorm on paper… maybe this could happen or maybe that could happen. This will spur other ideas until something gels.

Vonda Sinclair: As I mentioned earlier, I feel it has to do with the details. Emotions are one of the trickier parts of writing. If it doesn’t come naturally to the writer, they’ll need to learn the skill through reading books, noticing how great writers do it, taking workshops and practicing. This is especially important in romance because it’s an emotional genre. Some new writers tell emotion (She was sad.) instead of making the reader cry. The best writers make the readers bite their nails, cry, laugh, yell, etc. You really want to get the reader involved in the story. Connected to this is creating characters that readers love. If readers care about your characters, they’re going to be invested in their emotions.

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Vonda Sinclair: I sometimes listen to Celtic instrumental music or music designed for concentration and focus. I don’t want to listen to distracting music or singing. It has to fit the mood of the story, and I keep it at a low volume.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

Vonda Sinclair: If their books are flamboyant and over the top, then the author will be too. A lot of us are introverts. Or maybe they think we are just like our characters. (We’re not. lol)

TRC: What is something that few, if anyone, know about you?

Vonda Sinclair: Most readers don’t know I have a BS in psychology and a minor in studio art. I studied French for four years. Believe it or not, these do tie into my books. lol

TRC: Who or what influenced your path towards a young adult, paranormal story line.

Vonda Sinclair: I wanted a short break from historical romance. Sometimes it’s fun and refreshing to work on something unusual like shapeshifters and time travel.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Vonda Sinclair: The second story in this series, the one about Gavin’s friend Torr. I haven’t finalized the title yet.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Vonda Sinclair: I just want to say thank you for this interview. It has been fun!
