Description:
Daroth is at wits end to know what to do to control a generation of children he believes is out of control. What is a King to do?
The rowdiness he can accept, but when it gets too far out of hand he hands over the training of their offspring to Gabriel. The children take to military training like ducks to water, but the parents find they are missing their babies. Their darlings are being drilled to fight, morning, noon and night and no longer smile. They need a chance to be children. Only Daroth can release them from his edict, and he won’t.
With Daroth showing signs of being stubborn, the women decide they are going to help their King reconsider his decision and he soon learns not to under-estimate the power of the bond between a mother and her children.
Review:
Guardians of the Future by M.A. Abraham is a welcome addition to her Elven Chronicles series. I started this novella, knowing it was going to be a fun book to read, and I was not wrong. We get to see most of our original lovable Elves, which is always fun, but the children had a major part of this story, and it was a blast to read. It seemed like I had just started the book, when it was over. This was a fast and perfect book to read, when you just need something to enjoy, with no stress factor at all and just plain fun. M.A. Abraham has an uncanny knack, especially in her fun novellas to do just that.
I do have to say, it’s bad enough to have all these kings and their sons (thankfully most were not part of this story), and not know who was who. Well in Guardians of the Future, there are more children then Kings. Lol But surprisingly, I wasn’t confused at all.
Having powerful parents, the children, with the oldest being 8 years old, are slowly coming into age where they are learning about their true powers. But they are also children, and children like to have fun. The adults find themselves looking over their shoulder quite often when they are quietly walking. It is too dangerous to be complacent, as the children are always competing and racing around, not caring who is in the way.
Daroth has had enough, and orders Gabriel to gather his men and train all the children what discipline is, as well as to respect their elders. A few hundred children are then trained to prepare them how to act like warriors, and learn how to defend themselves. With Daroth being very adamant about this training, it is the women who once again come forth with a plan to lighten up on the children and let them be what they are…children.
This was a fun story from start to finish. I enjoyed the games the children played, with the wolves and cats. There was some danger and a near miss mid way that caused us a little worry, though we knew nothing could possibly happen. You will need to read this book to know what I mean. M.A. Abraham has a wonderful imagination.
The end was fun, as we watch how these children, when they grow up, are most certainly the Guardians of the Future. Wonderful story!
