They’re not the only ones on the prowl…but they’re the most dangerous…

They’re going international to take down a killer and he can guard Valerie all day long. But guard his heart? He doesn’t stand a chance.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: YOU HAD ME AT JAGUAR is the sixth instalment in Terry Spear’s contemporary, adult HEART OF THE JAGUAR paranormal, romance series. This is she-jaguar Enforcer Valerie Chambers, and United Shifter Force (USF) Agent Howard Armstrong’s story line. YOU HAD ME AT JAGUAR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Valerie and Howard) YOU HAD ME AT JAGUAR follows the building relationship between she-jaguar Enforcer Valerie Chambers, and United Shifter Force (USF) Agent Howard Armstrong. Valerie Chambers’ latest assignment as a member of the Enforcer Team is to hunt, and take down a killer; a jaguar male who killed his newly turned mate, then ran to places unknown. While on assignment Val will come face to face with former Enforcer, and new USF agent Howard Armstrong, whose own assignment is to shadow and protect our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship and romance between Val and Howard, and the potential fall-out as several investigations cross paths in Belize, placing the Enforcers and USF team in the line of fire.

As a Enforcer, Valerie’s job is to take down the worst rogue shifters, and sometimes the human who were killing jaguars or shifters in the wild but never had Valerie suspected that the USF would assign backup, on her latest solo mission. Howard Armstrong’s attraction to Valerie began during Valerie’s training as a jaguar Enforcer. Now, months later Howard ‘volunteered’ along with his USF partner and wolf-shifter Jillian Greystoke, to cover and protect the woman with whom he is falling in love.

Meanwhile Valerie’s parents, and jaguar Guardians are on an assignment of their own, tracking a drug dealer in Belize, who may or may not have connections to the jaguar shifters, and the man for whom Valerie and Howard are on the hunt.

The relationship between Valerie and Howard is one of mutual attraction; a friends to lovers romance heightened by their current working assignments that forces our couple to work and live in close proximity. The quick building romance is fated, passionate and hot.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including human homicide detective Rowdy Sanderson whom we have met on a number of previous occasions; wolf shifters Jillian Greystoke and her mate Vaughn ; Valerie’s parents; Izzie Summerfield- a woman whose life is about to change, and jaguar female Emmie Bancoft. The requisite evil has many faces including jaguar and murderer Benny Canton.

The world building continues to look at the law enforcement and secret society of shifters; their private police and investigative forces, as well as the political hierarchy of the shifter nation.

YOU HAD ME AT JAGUAR is a character driven story line of family, friendship, betrayal and love but a story line with more telling than showing driven by the conversations between most of the characters. There is some redundancy and repetition when the characters restate or explain previous conversations. The premise is engaging; the romance is seductive; the characters are numerous, colorful and energetic. YOU HAD ME AT JAGUAR is a fast paced and intriguing story of shifters and the human world of which they inhabit.

As soon as he’d seen the striking redhead again, he was reminded of how she’d pinned him down during training. She’d cast him the wickedest smile. With his back on the floor and her on top of him, he couldn’t help smiling back at her. Of course, after her unorthodox move, the testers had made a new rule—no one was to move before the bell rang—because they were afraid they’d have chaos otherwise. When they’d mentioned the new rules, Howard had glanced in Val’s direction, and she’d given him a cat-that-ate-the-mouse look similar to the one he’d given her when she was lying on top of him at the training. He’d smiled back at her, thinking they might really have had a chance to date.
The three branches—the Enforcers, JAG, and Guardians—all had a common mission: deal with jaguar shifters who posed a threat to humans and shifters alike, though each handled different situations. The Guardians focused more on providing aid to injured jaguars, while the JAG went after the rogues, or humans who were dealing in jaguars. The end result—incarceration or death for the rogues—depended on the situation. The Enforcers were sent to terminate murdering jaguars. Period. They didn’t consider jail time for the offender.
Howard and Jillian were now with the USF, a special section of the JAG that took care of jaguars and wolves creating trouble or in trouble. They were currently the only two agents who had a break between cases. Since Howard was a former Enforcer, his boss felt he would be right for the job. The branches worked together when necessary, but usually all the agents involved would be well aware of the situation.
Jillian was mated to Vaughn, a gray wolf SEAL who was busy tracking down a murderous wolf with the two other jaguar team members of the USF. They hadn’t needed Jillian and Howard too.
Jillian got another text, the fourth one in a half hour. She texted back.
Howard didn’t have to guess who it was from. “Vaughn should have taken you with him.”
“This guy that Val is trying to neutralize is supposed to be a lot less violent than the one Vaughn’s team is trying to track down. At least as far as the general population is concerned. Benny’s wife was a different story.”
“I still wish Martin had allowed us to tell Val we are here watching her back.”
“The boss said she doesn’t like working with anyone else. Since many Enforcers work alone, she’d think her boss felt she couldn’t handle the case on her own. How well do you know her?” Jillian asked.
“I’ve been in training with her. Never worked with her though. She’s got some kick-ass moves, and I have to say she’s extremely quick-witted.”
Jillian smiled at him. “Did she ever get the best of you?”
He gave her a dark smile back. “Not that I’d ever admit to.” He ordered another beer. “You know, her mother, Gladys, was the first female Enforcer we had, and she and her mate, Jasper, are still on the force.”
“Wow. They don’t want to leave all the excitement behind?”
“That’s about it. They’re both good people, wanting to right the wrong and deal with the bad guys. And Gladys wanted to prove to her dad, who was an Enforcer, that she could do as good a job as any man. She and her mate have one of the highest success rates for eliminating rogue jaguars. They make a great team. But there has to be a time when Enforcers need to retire, when they might not be as quick to react or as strong as they had once been. Their boss just doesn’t want to force retirement on them. Not while they’ve been so successful, despite being in their golden years.”
“I think it’s great. Better to die doing what you love than live to an old age wishing you were still fighting the good fight.”
He smiled at Jillian. “Easy for you to say. Your kind lives much longer than we do. What a deal.”
“True. You know, Val’s been watching you. And she’s been watching the entrance. Do you think she’s onto us?”
“I doubt it. What would the odds be that Martin would send two of his USF agents to protect an Enforcer in a simple takedown operation without her being informed?”
“Not likely. Do you want to dance?” Jillian grabbed Howard’s hand before he could object.
“Hell, do you want this to get back to Vaughn? As a SEAL wolf, he’d kill me.”
Jillian laughed. “He knows we’re undercover, and this is just for fun. You never dated Val?”
“No. I never dated anyone in the Enforcer branch. How do you know she’s been watching me?” he asked as they danced to the loud beat, the lights flashing all over the dance floor. “Wait. It was when you went to the ladies’ room. That’s why you took so long to return. You were observing her.”
“And others. And you.”
“Me? I wasn’t about to blow our cover. What if she had a meltdown because we’re here to protect her?”
“You did good. You only looked her way five times and only when she was busy ordering a drink, telling a patron to bug off, and looking around at other people at the time. If you had caught her eye though, then what?”
“I would have waved. She knows me. I know her. It would be foolish to pretend I didn’t recognize her.”
They continued to dance to the faster beat, which Howard was glad for. He really didn’t want Vaughn to get any ideas about him and Jillian.
“You ought to ask her to dance. You’re no longer an Enforcer. Then she’ll know we’re not together in a boyfriend/girlfriend way. It might help our mission if it looks like we’re just here to have fun.”
“She’s on a job.”
“Right. But you aren’t supposed to know that. You’d be her cover too, though she wouldn’t realize it.”
“All right. You just don’t want it to get back to your mate that I only danced with you.”
Jillian laughed.
He led her back to the table, but the next dance was a slow dance, and he wasn’t going to ask Val then. Not that he didn’t want to, but he hated being here under false pretenses, as far as Val was concerned. What if they got a little too hot and heavy on the dance floor, as he’d like to with her, and then she learned he was only there on an assignment?
He sat down across from Jillian.
She smiled. “Coward.”
“Next dance.” But it was a slow one too. “Next fast dance,” he clarified.

There are all kinds of surprises under the mistletoe!

As a protector of all jaguar-kind, Guardian agent Demetria MacFarlane isn’t surprised to get a call near Christmas—but when she’s sent to protect a cub whose species she didn’t even know existed, her holiday season gets complicated. And it doesn’t help that her partner is a distraction of the hottest kind.

Hotshot JAG agent Everett Anderson can handle dangerous poachers and wildlife traffickers, no problem…but kids? Everett fears he’ll be stuck cub-sitting under the Christmas tree, but working with one sexy Guardian she-cat may be the best present he’s ever gotten.

•••••••••••

REVIEW: A VERY JAGUAR CHRISTMAS is the fifth installment in Terry Spear’s contemporary, adult HEART OF THE JAGUAR paranormal, romance series. This is Guardian agent Demetria MacFarlane, and JAG agent Everett Anderson’s story line. A VERY JAGUAR CHRISTMAS can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous story lines is revealed where necessary. JAG is the policing arm and special forcers agency of the jaguar shifter community.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Demetria and Everett) A VERY JAGUAR CHRISTMAS follows the building relationship between two jaguar shifters-Demetria MacFarlane, a Guardian agent for the special forces JAG unit; and JAG Golden Claws agent Everett Anderson- a friends to lovers romance that sees Everett falling for his late former partner’s girlfriend. When a young artic wolf shifter is dropped off at the local jaguar daycare Everett and Demetria are assigned to investigate the whereabouts of the child’s parents, and the who, what and why behind his appearance at the shifter daycare.

One year earlier, Demetria’s boyfriend, Matt Bruskrud, was killed while on assignment in the Costa Rican rain forest. Matt’s JAG partner Everett Anderson had always had a ‘crush’ on Demetria but the female jaguar was off limits while Demetria remained in a relationship with Matt. Now partnered together to search for information regarding the foundling wolf cub, Everett begins a slow seduction of the woman that calls to his heart.

A VERY JAGUAR CHRISTMAS merges Terry Spear’s HEART OF THE JAGUAR and HEART OF THE WOLF paranormal series wherein neither species was aware of the other’s existence. With the merger comes the USF-United Shifter Force that will be headed by our leading couple-Demetria and Everett, and badass JAG enforcer Howard Sternum. I am not sure if Terry has planned a spin off series, but I am looking forward to more stories focusing on the newly formed USF.

There is a large ensemble cast of supporting and secondary characters including many of the previous story line couples, and a few cross over characters from Terry’s HEART OF THE WOLF series. We are introduced to JAG enforcer Howard Sternum- a bit of a badass jaguar who is called in when a jaguar has gone rogue or needs to be taken out. And of course Corey’s family of artic wolves whose own story has yet to be told.

A VERY JAGUAR CHRISTMAS is a fast paced, sweet story that focuses on a small artic wolf shifter child named Corey MacPherson who brings together two supernatural species during the Christmas holidays. The premise is heartwarming and magical; the characters are sweet, enthusiastic and animated; the romance is passionate and fated.

Excerpt

What do you do when you think your boss is drinking on the job in celebration of Christmas when he gives you the most unreal mission you could think of?
Early that morning, Demetria got an emergency call from the director of the Guardian branch. She was feeling better, but she was on vacation, had had to take something for a headache this morning, and fully intended to sleep for a few more hours. It was only six in the morning!
Then her heart thumped wildly, her first thought that there was some awful development concerning Brayden.
When her boss told her the trouble he was calling about, she immediately believed Ben had gotten an early start on drinking mistletoe martinis in celebration of the holidays.
She put the call on speaker so she could get dressed. “Okay, sir, you’re telling me that the jaguar shifter daycare has an Arctic wolf shifter pup there. Really? That’s like saying they have a Bigfoot baby there. They’re trying to pull a prank on us.”
“I’m serious, Demetria. I need you to go over there immediately. You might know that a JAG agent’s mother owns and operates the daycare, so she called her son Everett Anderson to take care of it at first. Since he was working with you on Brayden Covington’s case, he called and highly recommended you handle it. The JAG agency doesn’t normally deal with guardian-type services. That’s our job.”
Mary Anderson’s daycare? Demetria couldn’t believe it. Mary was great at coming up with fantastical stories and games for the kids, but she didn’t figure her for going with a practical joke that involved a policing agency.
Demetria squinted at her reflection in the mirror. Ugh. She brushed her hair and began applying her makeup. “We don’t handle anything like that either, for anything other than jaguars. This has got to be someone’s idea of a joke. This year, the different branches pulled all kinds of pranks on each other.”
“That was on April Fool’s Day.”
“So, maybe they’re a little early for next year.”
Ignoring her comment, Ben said, “I need you to check it out and report back to me ASAP.”
“All right, sir.” This was nuts. And she hated to be the fall guy.
“Okay, but if this truly is a case of learning there’s such a thing as a wolf shifter, I’m canceling your leave and assigning you the job. This case takes priority over anything else.”
She wished she hadn’t had that third margarita last night.
She grabbed her purse and glanced at the clean kitchen, vaguely recalling that Everett had been mopping the floor before…before he carried her off to bed. Now she felt even guiltier that she’d said no to a date with him today. Was this a way for him to get even?
She headed out the door.
“All right?” Ben said, getting confirmation she was going along with the program.
“Yes, sir.” Because she knew this was all some dumb hoax. Though she couldn’t believe Everett or his mother would be trying to pull some prank on her. She just didn’t know what to think.
When Demetria arrived at the daycare, pretend frost covered the windows, making it look like a winter’s day in Dallas. Twinkling colorful lights hanging from the eves and lights in the windows gave it a real holiday look. The sign out front had two little angels holding jaguar cubs, signifying to jaguar shifters that one of their own ran the place. She didn’t imagine any human daycare would include jaguars in its motif, and she wondered what humans would think of the notion of having a wild animal as part of the branding.
Looking totally frazzled with her blond hair slipping from her bun, Mary Anderson met Demetria outside and quickly ushered her into the daycare. “Oh, oh, I’m so glad you’re here, Demetria. This is just well…just…unreal. And wonderful. And horrible.”
Demetria had never seen Everett’s mother so rattled. Well, except for the time she was helping search for the runaway preschooler. “My boss sent me to help take care of the situation. May I see the wolf shifter pup?”
“Yes, yes, this way. Everett has been watching over him. He starts crying and whimpering if we leave him alone for even a minute.”
“Wolf pack mentality,” Demetria said, as if buying into this. “Unless you mean your son.”
Mary smiled a little. “Everett will be thrilled you arrived to take the pup off his hands. He was the one who called your boss and asked for your help. He was a little worried you might not be feeling well because you were a touch under the weather last night, but he knew you were just the one to handle it. We have a serious problem here.”
Demetria hoped he hadn’t told his mother why she was a “touch under the weather” last night. “Besides the fact werewolves don’t exist?”
“We don’t know who the mother was.”
Demetria frowned at her. “You didn’t sign the child in?” Even though she knew this had to be a joke, she still couldn’t help treating it like it was a real case.
“No. Neither did Heidi Johansson, my helper,” Mary said. “The woman just dropped the child off, then left. If he had been strictly human and hadn’t told Heidi he was going to shift and then shifted, I would have called child protective services.”
Demetria did smell the wolf scent, which told her that they’d had a real wolf, or wolf-dog, here at some point.
They both reached the doorway to a room in the back of the building and looked in. Smiling, Everett crouched on the floor, playing tug-of-war with the wolf pup, the silver aluminum halo firmly entrenched between the pup’s teeth. Demetria smiled at the sight, pulled out her cell phone, and snapped a shot to send to her boss. Now this was seeing Everett in a new light. Though watching him mop the spilled margarita off her floor and clean up all the glass was something she’d never seen him do either. She had to admit she was grateful he’d cleaned up the floor, dishes, and everything.
“Oh, no, Everett,” his mother scolded. “We need those for the Christmas play.” Mary took the halo away from Everett, looking highly annoyed with him.
Everett appeared properly chastised, while the pup looked like he was disappointed his favorite toy had been taken away from him and was still eyeing it in Mary’s hand.

Guest Post

What if the shifter world as you knew it suddenly changed?

That’s what happens in A Very Jaguar Christmas. Everyone, jaguars and wolves alike, were blissfully unaware of the others. And now with one little Arctic wolf pup deposited at a jaguar shifter daycare before Christmas, both their worlds collide.

Can you imagine that? I mean, it would be like if some hunky guy you were friends with suddenly turned out to be a wolf—more than just a wolfish guy, but really a part-time wolf! So they have to deal with not just knowing that wolf shifters exist, but that they have one of their little ones, and where does that leave them?

Jaguars are not pack animals, yet the momma takes care of her babies until they’re old enough to hunt on their own. I was just watching a video about cougars, and the myth that the daddy isn’t welcome anymore might be just that. It showed the momma in a den with her babies and daddy coming to join them! So it’s possible that jaguars are the same. They’re so elusive, it’s hard to say.

In any event, the human part of the equation usually makes the shifter just as family-oriented as the wolf packs. But there are differences. They don’t have the issue of the full moon to contend with, if they’re more newly turned.

But how do you, if you’re a jaguar shifter, even find where the wolf packs are? How do you take care of a wolf pup? How do you convince a wolf pack that you have one of their own, and you’re a jaguar shifter that they didn’t even know existed?

It’s not just an adult issue, either. How will the pup feel about being with a bunch of big cats? And little cats too? How will the jaguar kits feel about this alien wolf pup in their daycare? What about protective mommas?

So I’m excited about showing their worlds come together, to see how they will relate, work together, or not. They do have the shifter issue in common, so they have common ground right from the start. And that’s important. But what about territories? Each have their own territories in the wild. Will that be an issue for them as shifters?

For instance, what if a jaguar shifter moved into the town of Silver Town, one place that is totally run by a wolf pack? Would they object? How would a jaguar fit in if he or she had to run in Colorado? What if the jaguar had a mate and little jaguars?

The Victorian Inn is already prepared to handle a jaguar family with a jungle theme just for them in one of the rooms, but what if the family wants to stay and put down roots? Could they abide by wolf pack laws?

So many questions. Fun and conflict—that makes it fun for readers too!

Yep, there’s trouble in shifter paradise, and it’s Christmas on top of that. So it’s time to make some changes in the natural order of things, deal with the fallout, and make this the best Christmas ever.

excerpt

Once inside the park, Melissa and Huntley trekked for miles, not seeing much of anyone or anything, not with the way the rains were coming down in torrents in the steamy rainforest. They hadn’t found any sign of Jackson. Just a few hikers, hardier than most, who endured the rains and mud to see glimpses of wildlife here and there. When Melissa and Huntley finally set up camp for the night, she felt wet and miserable. And she couldn’t believe how Huntley looked like he could go on for several more hours when she was totally beat.
She should have regretted not sleeping more last night. But making love to him was what she’d needed. Not that she thought anything permanent was likely to come out of the relationship.
Just the same, she’d needed to feel sexy and wanted and loved. Huntley gave that to her and more. So when he’d wanted more, she just couldn’t say no, despite knowing that she needed a good seven hours of sleep to feel normal the next day.
She was thinking of Jackson and how he had slipped away from them the first time. She hoped they’d find him soon. Then gunshots fired off in the distance.
Her heart skipped a couple of beats.
“We don’t have time to take down the tent. Do we go as humans or jaguars?” Huntley quickly asked her.
She loved that about him—how he always included her in the decision making. “If they’re rangers or police, I want to go as humans. Even if they’re poachers, I think we’ll be safer if we look like we are ‘tourists.’ We can always shift when we get there if we need to.”
“Sounds good.”
At least they were armed with tranquilizer guns this time.

••••••••••••

REVIEW: JAGUAR FEVER is the second storyline in the Heart of the Jaguar series by Terry Spear. Although it is the second installment, it can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty. Some of the previous storyline characters play secondary roles, but any pertinent information is revealed throughout this particular novel. This story focuses on Maya Anderson and Wade Patterson who were introduced in book one-Savage Hunter.

The storyline focuses on the Patterson brothers and more specifically alpha he-man Wade Patterson, as he and his brother David, search for a group of people who have been illegally importing wild jaguars for a hunting ranch in the USA. But Wade will find himself face to face with the woman who stirred something deep within his heart-Maya Anderson-another jaguar shifter who hopes to reconnect with Wade for a few days of hot passionate sex without any ties.

The writing style is simple and the plot predictable. This is a story about a special forces shifter unit hoping to stop the illegal poaching of big game cats, but will all too soon find themselves the hunted as well as the hunter. The environmental issues of endangered species is an integral part of the storyline with issues pertaining to illegal poaching, importing and the sale of wild animals to collectors and hunters.

The storyline takes place between Belize and the USA where Terry Spear takes the reader on a journey through the underbrush and jungles of two different continents. The flow and pacing are steady; there are several chase and actions scenes culminating in retribution and revenge; as well as the push and pull of sexual attraction. And like the animals of the wild, our leading couple know what it is they want from each other.

With this particular storyline, Terry has introduced several more potential players including three male and two female shifters without mates, so you know the series will continue for several more books.

Terry Spear introduces the reader to sexy feline shifters; a special forces JAG unit that oversees the world of the cat; and a series with a little action, a little suspense, a little romance and a little sex. A perfect read for a lazy Sunday afternoon.

REVIEW: HEART OF THE JAGUAR is the fifth installment in Katie Reus’s Nocturne Craving Paranormal series of novellas. This particular series is NOT connected to Katie’s Moonshifter series, but is series of short stories focusing on the lives and loves of the shifter wolves and jaguars in Bear Mountain, Montana.

Heart of the Jaguar follows wolf shifter Elias, the pack alpha’s new second in command and Dr. Cindy Shahi, a jaguar and local physician. The chemistry is instant when the couple meet at the wedding of mutual friends, but Elias’s wolf only knows one thing-Cindy is his mate. Cindy on the other hand wants nothing to do with long term relationships-she had a secret and was willing to bet that no shifter male would take her on as his mate

Threats against the couple begin to escalate placing Cindy and Elias in danger. Believing they know who is responsible, the information is handed over to the local police, but all too soon, the rules of the game change when a late night drive turns deadly and the couple are forced to shift in order to save their own lives.

HEART OF THE JAGUAR is another fascinating storyline from the pen of Katie Reus. Although this series of novels can be read as stand-alones, there is enough of a connection between the storylines that they should be read in order to keep the character and world building cohesive. I am a big fan of Katie Reus, and she has yet to disappoint this reader.
