Review:

How to Handle a Highlander is the 6th book in Mary Wine‘s Highlander series.  This is my first book by Wine, but I thought this worked well enough to read as a standalone.  How to Handle a Highlander is a historical romance, as well as a Highlander story.  Moira Fraser is our heroine, being considered a commoner by her family; she is forced by her evil half brother Bari,  to marry an old laird, in a deal for help to destroy the Sutherland family.   Moira is a sweet, likeable and pretty heroine, and despite her being treated beneath the rest of the family, she feels it is her responsibility to do what is necessary to help her clan.

Gahan Sutherland is our hero, and a hot hunky Highlander he is.  Gahan, who represents his clan, heads for the home of the Laird Achaius Matheson, to try and stop a clan war.  The Laird, who will marry Moira, also has his own agenda.  When Gahan sets his eyes on Moira, he is immediately attracted to her, and knows she is being forced to marry Achaius, who is a mean and scheming old man. Gahan at first feels sympathy for Moira, but over a short period, he becomes obsessive and protective of her, and even though she is now married to the Laird, they both respond to their sexual chemistry.  What they do not know is that the Laird anticipates this, and secretly plans to destroy the Frasers, with the exception of Moira, enabling him to take over the Fraser land,

Within that plot, Moira’s half brother is out for revenge against the Sutherlands for killing his sister, who had tried to poison Gahan’s father. This story is filled with plots, betrayals, scheming relatives, and a romance between two people who find true love.

I liked both Moira and Gahan, as they made a nice couple.  I did think that it was a bit unrealistic that the serious and dutiful Moira, who was promised to another man, would fall into bed with Gahan almost the first night she met him.   The story moved back and forth, as Gahan was stopped just about at every move to free Moira from her half brother’s shenanigans, as well as from the clutches of her husband.  A surprise twist happens half way through that creates more havoc, and the last third of the story is exciting and action packed.  It was a nice historical romance, with a quite a few steamy scenes. Will Gahan be able to save Moira?  Will they both have a life together?  Will the Sutherlands survive the plotting of the other clans?  You need to read this book to find out.

Guest Post-White and Purple

Good afternoon, thanks for having me over today. I’m really excited about my newest book, How to Handle a Highlander. This is book three in my Sutherlands but you can read it stand alone. I’ll let everyone in on a little secret, I just finished up book four in this book. It will release next summer.

How Do You Create a Hero?

Wow, that’s a question and a half. Now inside all of us, is a little girl who played princess. Even though some of those inner princesses were more Xena than Cinderella. I think the best part about the Romance gene is that there are so many different types of stories. You can find something that suits your idea of a perfect world.

When it comes to the hero, let’s face it girls, we want him yummy. There is no getting around that…hard….fact. But I don’t feel too guilty when I pass through my living room and there is my husband playing a video game and all the female characters are these incredibly scrumptious creatures.

But what makes a man a hero? That’s the part where the writer has to craft her character and sell him to the reader. There are certain traits that go with hero and defiantly ones that don’t. When I’m working on the first part of a story, that beginning, creation stage, I get a feel on that hero and where his is in his life. Why is he there and what is it about him that keep him from crossing the line into that ‘non-hero’ zone.

I always need my books to be part of the time they are in. In How to Handle a Highlander, I’m dealing with harsh realities. My heroine is set to marry an old man, she’ll be wife number four. For the time, it wasn’t unheard of. Marriage was for children, so older men often took bride young enough to provide those children.

No my hero knows that the union is going to unite two clans against his own. He wants to stop it but what makes him a hero is the fact that he’s got to find a way to intervene without just resorting to violence. He also notices that my heroine is not the problem, she’s stuck in the problem. That’s where I think he shines the most. When he notices that she needs his help.

No matter what sort of hero you desire, they’ve got to have integrity, be men of their word and willing to face the challenges of fate.

Cheers Everyone!

How to Handle a Highlander Excerpt-

“Inspecting yer new possession?”

She recognized Gahan’s voice instantly. It was slightly unnerving how swiftly she identified him.

“Yer sister would have found it beneath her,” he added.

Gahan parted from the shadow of a doorway. The hall was farther behind her than she’d realized; the setting of the supper table was now only a dim buzz. A strange twist of excitement went through her belly, startling her. But it also left a bitter taste in her mouth, because she realized she preferred Gahan to her groom.

It was knowledge she could have done well without.

“Nae that I’d expect any less of any woman wedding such an old man,” Gahan informed her.

His tone was condescending at best, and it irritated her. He was her better. The fine weave of his kilt and the silver buttons running up the sides of his knee-high boots showed off just how much his father gave him. She should have kept her mouth shut, but her pride flared up and she propped her hand onto her hip.

“And will yer father give ye any choice when he contracts a bride for ye?” She questioned boldly “Or will ye turn yer nose up no matter who is depending upon ye to do yer duty? Like a spoiled child who knows naught of the way alliances keep a clan safe?”

His eyes narrowed. For a moment, it looked like he was considering what she said, almost as if she’d surprised him somehow.

“Nae if me duty includes making sure me kin can start a feud.”

“I have no such desire.” She shouldn’t snap at him but just couldn’t squelch the urge. “A contented man”—she had to stop to swallow the lump lodged in her throat—“is happy to stay at home.”

He studied her for a long moment, one that felt far longer than it really could have been. She felt like he was looking at her thoughts, his gaze cutting past her realistic reasons, to see her true feelings.

“So what is it that draws ye to a man old enough to be yer grandfather? The title? I suppose I can believe that. Yer sister was certainly enchanted by titles.”

“Half sister.” She paused, realizing that what Bari had so often used to insult her was something she prided herself on.

“And I’m bastard-born,” he replied softly. “Which changes nothing when it comes to me loyalties. Or, I doubt, yers.”

He was trying to intimidate her, but instead, his words somehow impressed her. There was something in his dark eyes that intrigued her, and she stared into the dark orbs, trying to decipher it.

He snorted at her. “Do nae try it.”

“Try what?”

He crossed his arms over his chest, and she suddenly realized just how close he was. There was no more than a pace between them now, and she jumped back, colliding with the hard stone of the wall. His lips twitched.

“I admit, ye play the innocent better then Sandra ever did, but ye’ll nae find it simple to seduce me.”

She straightened up, stepping away from the wall as her temper simmered. “Ye have no right to accuse me of nae being innocent. Or of trying to act like a harlot. Ye were the one waiting in the shadows.”

His lips parted to flash his teeth at her. “I knew ye had claws. Ye are a Fraser after all.”

There was a ring of triumph in his tone, which irritated her beyond every bit of self-discipline she had.

“What I have is the sense to know when I’m hearing naught but dribble. Son of an earl or nae, ye do nae have the right to insult me for obeying me laird. I do nae need the Matheson thinking I turned up me nose at their laird. Marriage is for forming alliances. I’m nae so selfish as to think an insult to a laird, like refusing his offer, will nae become a festering point of contention.”

But her voice lowered as she finished, and she had to push the last sentence past her lips because she just didn’t want to believe she was one day away from having to wed Achaius Matheson.

“And I was nae trying to seduce ye,” she added.

His grin remained arrogant and large, but he opened his arms, offering her a view of just how wide his chest was. “Ye were looking into me eyes.”

“And ye were looking into mine,” she countered. He was suddenly too large and the hallway far too compact to suit her. “Enough arrogance. Perhaps ye are accustomed to only the sort of women who like to seduce, but I am nae of that sort. I’m set to wed, and I do nae think it wise to be standing here acting like—”

“Like lovers flirting in the night shadows?”

His voice dipped low and sent a tingle along her limbs. There was a gleam of mischief in his dark eyes.

She shook her head, her tongue feeling frozen with shock.

“Nay, we are nae acting like lovers, or are ye arguing that we are nae lovers—yet?” He pressed forward another few inches.

Something snapped inside her. She gasped and went to shove him away from her.

“Ye obnoxious urchin!”

She flattened her hands against his chest, but he didn’t budge. She’d used a fair amount of strength, but Gahan Sutherland only chuckled at her attempt to move him.

“Ye have no right to accuse me of such indecent things. Maybe there are plenty who would remind me that ye’re me better and can say what ye will, but I will do me duty.”

He closed his hands around hers, but he didn’t remove them from his chest. Instead, he trapped her there with her hands upon him.

“What if I told ye I would nae be opposed to becoming yer lover? I promise ye will find me bed more to yer liking.”

Her mouth dropped open, and her temper exploded. She never really thought about what she was doing; her body simply refused to remain still. With a snarl, she sent her knee toward his unprotected groin. One moment he was chuckling at her, and the next, she felt her blow connecting.

The Spy Word BlueBOOK 1.5 – The Spy Wore Blue

.99cent Deal at Amazon: Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk / KOBO /

DESCRIPTION; Release Date August 6, 2013

An exciting new novella in the popular Lord and Lady Spy series. Blue, an elite spy, tracks an assassin to Naples and the theater where his estranged wife performs. As he falls in love with his Helena again, Blue races to apprehend the assassin before he destroys them both.

REVIEW

The Spy Wore Blue is a novella based on a spy we met in the first book. Agent Blue.

Blue and Helena are married, although they have been estranged for quite some time. Blue was overly dedicated to his work as a spy and had little time for a wife, and Helena performed in the opera house when she wasn’t drowning her sorrows in a bottle of gin.

Blue has a new assignment that takes him back to his wife. Much to the others desire (or lack there of), they need to endure each others company for the time being as an assassin is out there waiting to strike. Soon enough, these two are falling in love once again, sharing some steamy moments between the sheets, bantering back and forth and ultimately providing an emotional roller coaster for the reader.

I have to say, this was a amazing novella. It is very hard for an author to develop characters, provide a love story packed with action and make it all believable in such a short amount of pages. Let me tell you, Shana Galen mastered this! 😉

Even more shocking, her neglectful husband is suddenly very attentive—quite the jealous type—and apparently there is much more to him than she ever knew

REVIEW

LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. Once again we are swept away in another action packed book by Shana Galen. This amazing author can sure write a great book .. great SERIES!

Lady Elinor is fed up living in a frozen marriage and has vowed to do something about it. While she loves her daughters and all they bring to her life, she craves more. Elinor craves adventure. Slowly, she begins to break the rules of polite society by attending balls on her own and conspiring to have an affair with a rakish man and just generally stirring the pot.

Baron Winslow Keating (Winn) is a spy who has to do one more mission. He realizes that his family has suffered with his current occupation and if he doesn’t make amends soon he risks losing then. When he overhears his wife’s desire to have an affair he sees red. Determined not to lose his family, Winn turns on the charm and begins to seduce his wife. In the midst of seduction, Elinor is receiving the adventure she so desperately craves (apparently spy life is exciting) and opens her heart once more. In turn, Winn is coming to fall in love with his wife, gain trust and love with his daughters and ultimately living the life he now wants.

We see a return of the antagonist Fonce (he was the bad guy in the first book), and an appearance by Lord and Lady Smythe (loved that) in this book. As with the first one, there is never a dull moment and these two really make an interesting couple. Will Winn put spy life on the mantle and finally make his family his priority, or will he lose all??? Get reading!

This is my first experience with Shana Galen and I want MORE! Her writing is absolutely right up my alley and she always keeps it fresh, making me want to flip through quickly so I can enjoy the next hurdle our couples face. She writes hot scenes, ensures that her leading lady and man have serious chemistry, jams in all kind of action, provides witty dialogue, draws you in with mystery and suspense and creates believable characters that you can’t help but fall in love with! I will ABSOLUTELY be reading more of her work!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

But Louisa’s hopes are dashed when the Bishop of Hargate drops dead at her feet—and she is shockingly accused of murder! Soon, Louisa’s so-called friends begin shunning her, because the company of a suspected killer is never desirable in polite society.

The problem comes to the ears of Detective Inspector Lloyd Fellows, by-blow of the decadent Scottish Mackenzie family and an inspector for Scotland Yard. He has shared two passionate kisses with Lady Louisa–and vows to clear her name. For not only does he know she’s innocent, he recognizes he’s falling for the lovely lady.

Fellows is Louisa’s only hope of restoring her family’s honor—and it is he alone who intrigues Louisa in a way that may be even more scandalous than murder

Review:
The Untamed Mackenzie is a novella (book 5.5) in Jennifer Ashley’s Highland Pleasures series based on the fabulous Mackenzie men.  Lloyd Fellows is a half brother to the Mackenzies, as his late father the Old Duke refused to acknowledge him. Lloyd is now a successful Inspector, and despite his uncomfortable feelings, he finds himself constantly being pulled into the Mackenzie family gatherings, as his half brothers and their wives consider him family, It was at one of these events that Lloyd met Isabella’s sister, Louisa, and he immediately found himself attracted to her.  But despite his adopted family’s open arms, he does not feel he is worthy of Louisa, being the illegitimate son of the old Duke.

Louisa, who is looking for a rich husband, finds herself in a predicament.  While trying to force her to accept his proposal of marriage, the Bishop of Hargate drops dead at her feet.  He was poisoned, and since Louisa was the only one in the room with him at the time, she is now the main suspect in a murder investigation.

The Mackenzies use their power to ensure that Lloyd is put on the case to help save Louisa and find the real murderer.  Lloyd comes to the residence where the body lays, and when he sees Louisa, his heart begins to race, as he has not forgotten how he feels about her.  Knowing that he cannot act on his feelings, especially being the lead investigator where she is the main suspect, Lloyd acts distant.  But as the investigation moves along at a slow pace, both Lloyd and Louisa find themselves unable to control their feelings for each other.  They share a few very passionate kisses, only able to break away at the last minute.

The investigation becomes very difficult, as Lloyd will do anything to save Louisa, even if it means costing him his job.  With the help of some of the Mackenzie’s; Lloyd and Louisa work together to set a trap for the real killer.

Jennifer Ashley does a wonderful job building this romance of a couple that are so different from each other, but yet fall in love.  This romance was built slowly, and done so well.  The Untamed Mackenzie was a wonderful romance, excellent suspense and murder investigation, but the best part of the book besides the great couple, was being able to see all of the Mackenzies throughout the book.  I really enjoyed this novella, which is a perfect lead in to the next full book, which belongs to Daniel, and will be released in October.

An Unexpected Desire

An Unthinkable Dilemma

Then the truth comes out, shattering Lady Beatrice’s faith in the mischievous yet kind man who has captured her heart. With reputations and fortunes hanging in the balance, Colin and she must find a way to trust in a love that cannot be proven—or face an unfathomable loss.

Review:

Flirting with Fortune is the 3rd book in Erin Knightley’s Sealed With a Kiss series.  This series concentrates on the wealthy and powerful Moore children, as they each find their destined mates.  The first two wonderful books in this series belonged to Evie and Benedict, then Richard with Jane.   In Flirting with Fortune, it is Bea’s turn, and her parents are pushing her hard to find a husband before she gets much older.  But Bea, who is an artist, is much like Evie was; she isn’t interested in the men she must face at the coming out balls.  As far as Bea is concerned, they are all Fortune Hunters, looking only for the dowry that comes with picking a bride.  She is determined to never marry a fortune hunter.  Bea’s only interest is her art, which gives her so much joy, and the late famous artist, Sir Frederick Tate is her idol.

We meet our hero, Colin Tate, who is the late artist’s son, before the ball, where he will be introduced.  While waiting in the study, he spots someone looking at all the art work of his father.  Both Colin and Bea meet here, and they find themselves intrigued and attracted to each other fairly quickly.  But it isn’t until Bea finds out Colin is her idol’s son that she makes her mother officially introduce her.

What follows is an wonderful romance, as both Colin and Bea find themselves falling in love.  The relationship between them was so much fun to watch, as they had such great chemistry; easygoing camaraderie, cute banter between them, and they were just simply irresistible together.

Colin knew that Bea was the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, he was hopelessly in love.  But he worried, as he had a secret that could destroy his relationship with Bea.  Colin’s father left the family deep in debt, and Colin having his family depend on him as the eldest son, to find a way to save his home in Scotland.  This was the real reason he was forced to come to England to find a wife with a dowry to help him pay off those debts.  But Colin truly loves Bea, and he is afraid she will think he wants her only for the money, as she is obsessed with hating Fortune Hunters.  When he meets Richard (Bea’s brother) to ask for her hand in marriage, Colin tells him the truth and explains a solution that Richard finds acceptable and proves his love to Bea.

Unfortunately, we knew Bea would learn the truth of Colin’s debt.  What happens next is a very painful period that had me somewhat unhappy with Bea’s behavior.   I loved Colin and his determination to prove his love, at the same time I wanted to smack Bea a few times.  Will Colin win Bea’s forgiveness?   Well this is pure romance, so you pick the answer.  As I have mentioned in previous reviews, Erin Knightley has a wonderful voice, and her romances are fun and enjoyable to read, as well as having some great characters in this series.  I suggest you start with the first book (More Than a Stranger) before you read Flirting with Fortune.  You won’t be sorry, as Sealed With a Kiss is a wonderful series.

ABOUT THE BOOK: September 3, 2013

Laird Alexander MacDonnell must choose between his duty or
losing his heart forever to the woman who betrayed him—his own wife.

Lady Sybella MacKenzie is forced to search for her clan’s ancient seeing stone under the roof of her father’s enemy. When she finds the precious artifact, will she choose the family who raised her, or will she stand with the man who has captured her soul?

•••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: TO WED A WICKED HIGHLANDER is the third storyline in Victoria Roberts’ Bad Boys of the Highland historical romance series. I was first introduced to this particular series through a giveaway of Temptation in a Kilt and I have loved every storyline in the series. Victoria pulls the reader into a world of Highland warriors, lovers and family betrayal. You will laugh and cry and, your heart will break for the men and women from the Highlands of Scotland.

To Wed a Wicked Highlander focuses on Sybella MacKenzie and her arranged marriage to Laird Alexander MacDonnell. The MacDonell and the MacKenzie clans have been at war for years and with this marriage, it is hoped that the bad blood between the two families can be forgotten. But much to Sybella’s surprise she is a pawn in a much larger game that will find she and her new husband the target of an assassin’s arrow. And to complicate matters, Sybella will discover that someone close is hoping to kill the Laird and his new wife.

The relationship between Sybella and Alexander is one that started years earlier when both were but teenagers. Fast forward five years and Sybella finds herself betrothed to Laird Alexander in exchange for what she believes is a peaceful resolution to war between the clans. Alexander is a man of experience when it comes to the bedroom and he must take his time with his new wife. But it is only a matter of days before betrayal and heartbreak will find Sybella on the run and into the bosom of a not so welcoming family.

Several of the previous storyline characters are welcomed back to give the storyline a cohesive feeling to the series. Our hero and heroine are both likeable and relatable; Alexander is an alpha male who quickly grows to love his young bride; and Sybella is a woman who is not afraid to speak up when the circumstances arise. As a couple Sybella and Alexander are sensual together in the bedroom even though it will take some time for Sybella to warm up to her new husband’s actions. There is no angst or hatred between the couple; they have accepted their position as husband and wife, but betrayal will come from both outside and within.

To Wed a Wicked Highlander is a wonderful story of romance and love; betrayal and heartbreak; friend and foe. If you have not had a chance to read the Bad Boys of the Highlands I would suggest you move the series to the top of your TBR pile. The Highland warriors are sensual and romantic alpha males, who by way of a little trouble and heartbreaking realization, will eventually grow to love the bonnie lasses who have stolen their hearts from the very first meeting.

Historical romance. What is it about being swept away by a handsome English lord, a mischievous pirate or a brawny Highland laird that make women swoon? As with any fictional book, I think the main reason is simply escape. In today’s hustling and bustling world, everyone looks to breakout of the mundane. And I’m certainly no exception to that rule. Fortunately, Scottish historical romance provides me with the perfect distraction from everyday life.

Victoria RobertsI didn’t read my first romance until my thirties basically because I was daft. I thought the genre as a whole was nothing but a bunch of bodice rippers and truthfully, porn. One day my phenomenal CP (critique partner) slapped down a Scottish historical romance on my desk and demanded that I read it. I did, and boy was I ever wrong.

Between the rolling hills of the Scottish countryside, the bonny lochs, castles and fierce Highland lairds, I was hooked. I was never so happy to know that I was completely mistaken about the genre. There were actually plots, characterization and development, and darn it if the tales didn’t have me staying up way beyond my bedtime to finish.

As I became more familiar with the genre, I understood there were some historical inaccuracies in the books I read. Most of the time, those historical differences didn’t matter to me. After all, I was reading historical fiction. As a reader, I’m not normally bothered by this as long as I’m not pulled out of the story i.e. woman is wearing jeans in a regency novel. As a writer, I try to be as true to my genre as possible. I want to ensure the MacGregors, bloody Campbells (I couldn’t resist) and MacDonells donned the appropriate tartans. Their battle cries needed to be their own. Gaelic was a must. And although my characters were fictional, the setting was not.

The MacGregors and Campbells were always at odds. We know history tells us the MacGregors were the outlawed clan. While I wrote Temptation in a Kilt, I basically asked myself what would’ve happened if the Campbells were the clan at odds with King James and the MacGregors were seen in a favorable light? Well, this twist of history resulted in Laird Ciaran MacGregor and Lady Rosalia MacGregor finding true love. And in the end, isn’t that what we all secretly desire?

Most writers I know try to be as true to historical accuracy as possible, but remember that historical romance is ultimately fictional. Being engulfed in writing these tales on a daily basis, I’m humbly reminded that most of the swoon-worthy men in my life are fictional characters—well, other than my husband and my father of course.

REVIEW

3 out of 5 for this reader folks

A Most Devilish Rogue by Ashlyn Macnamara is the first book I have ever read by this author. I have to say while it was a good read, it failed to draw me and captivate my at times. That being said, Ashlyn Macnamara is very good at writing descriptive details that paints vivid pictures in your mind as you enjoy her words.

We are introduced right away to our main man George Upperton, notorious rake, gambler and overall charmer extraordinaire. He has just discovered that his mistress is “with child”! Seeing as he lives a certain lifestyle, he has no idea how he is going to get himself out of this sticky situation. He is in debt, is treated like an older child by his overbearing mother who wants to marry him off already, and just generally doesn’t care to conform to his “polite society”

While visiting an old friend with his family, George comes across Isabelle Mears and her son playing at the beach. All of a sudden the son Jack is swept up in the waves and George plunges into freezing water to save him. After an uncomfortable “thank you” by Isabelle, he is somewhat confused by this woman as her dress and her appeared station in life doesn’t seem to match her flowery comportment and speech.

Isabelle you see was shunned and disowned by her family for her one night of discretion with a young man that resulted in Jack conception. Isabelle is from high standing and money but living like a pauper, the towns scandalous lady whom everyone pretends doesn’t exist (they are so mean to her at times I felt myself getting angry for her) and considered “The Scarlett Letter”.

Once again, Isabelle finds herself in peril when Jack is kidnapped (along with the only lady that has given her the time of day and took her in when no one would) and she turns to George for help. George recruits many of his gentleman friends to search for Jack. Through all of this, the attraction that George and Isabelle feel towards one another is hard to fight and they eventually give in to it be damned the consequence.

Through many trials and tribulations, these two ride a roller coaster of forming friendship, lust, understanding, secrets, betrayal and a town that is full of people who want to keep these two apart.

Okay … so I really wanted to fall in love with these two but there were times that I felt a little disengaged and I think it may be due to the over abundance of description in this book. I wanted to get to the meat and potatoes and I thought at times there was just way too much details and angst that was repeated over and over again. I did love the way that George fought his friends and family to be at Isabelle’s side and how he stuck up for her when others wouldn’t. He had no reason to do this other than pure respect and love. You also see Isabelle just reaching the point of enough is enough and she begins to get stronger and stronger despite the way she is treated. She rises above all the mess and still offers the town her kindness.

Again … so much more to this story, but I don’t do spoilers in my reviews … WINK! LOL

I do believe there was another book before this one, but it wasn’t listed as a series. I went back and read the synopsis of the first book and I believe that many characters from there return in this book! Overall, a good read, but not a book I will reread!

HAPPY READING!

Review:

Over the past few months I have read so many different genres, that  I need to thanks Barb and Sandy for asking me to come and review on this great page.
Anyway my review …….

I was a little hesitant to take on this book, but I  had to trust in Barb’s knowledge.
It was a great read. A Bandit’s Broken Heart by Michelle McLean is the second book in the McLean’s Blood Blade Sister’s Series. I don’t think you need to read the first book, but it does give a little insight into Brynne’s character.

We meet Richard for the first time in this story. I really liked it.

This is one of those books that draws you in from the very beginning. The action starts from page one, and doesn’t let go until the very end. Even then, you want to keep on reading. McLean has penned such a bittersweet story set in the heart of Boston during a time when gunslingers and bounty hunters roamed the wilds in search of ways to make their lives a better place.

I loved Brynne from the very beginning, and found her to be a touching soul whose only wish is to do good in the world she lives in. Yet not everything falls into place for her. She has her up’s and down’s just like any other person, and makes do with the little she has with her. Her fighting spirit was a joy to read, and even when she was constantly ignored by societies ladies, Brynne kept her cool and carried on her own business.

Richard is a doctor who is constantly being harassed by the ladies of Boston, they want him to marry their daughters, and so he has to daily has to fight off the ladies and their mothers. But upon meeting Brynne, he sees past the starch and social niceties, and decides to chase this intriguing woman.

The smuggling was probably my favourite part, there was a little action, and it was all kept fast and real. The way Brynne assumed command made a refreshing change, I know she was a previous Blood Blade “Bandit”, but sometimes the author tends to give the lead to whatever man is in the scene.

The secondary characters were strong in their own rights, but no too overpowering, and I look forward to the sisters catching up with the scoundrel who stole sister Lucy’s heart and their niece !!!

A Bandit’s Broken Heart is a great addition to the Blood Blade Sisters series. I aim to catch up on book one soon enough, and look forward to more when the time comes.

Guest Post-White and Green

There is something about a tortured character that just makes the reader in me sit up and cheer. A character facing a mountain of obstacles keeps me turning the pages. Will she prevail? Will she defeat the bad guy and get her man? I have to know. Sure, I feel bad these poor characters are so picked on. I’m often sobbing into the pages right along with them. But it keeps me reading.

As a writer, I try to create the same conflict. If I’m crying over my poor characters while I’m writing, chances are good that my readers will too. My sister is one of my favorite guinea pigs and nothing makes me happier than sending her chapters and having her call me in a panic, threatening me with a very painful death if whatever just occurred in my book isn’t rectified immeditately 🙂

Is it nice to torture my characters? Well, no 🙂 But it does tend to be the drama, the conflict, that drives a story…and you just can’t get that if your characters get everything they want and are happy all the time.

Brynne Richardson Forrester, the main character in my newest release A Bandit’s Broken Heart (Blood Blade Sisters 2) has already been through a lot. Her husband is murdered in book 1 and she moves to a new city in book 2 in the hopes that she can start a new life and escape the pain of losing the only man she’s ever loved. Things don’t work out quite as she’d like.

But there is hope, most especially in the form of the handsome Dr. Richard Oliver. She has a happily ever after on the horizon, but she’ll have to go through a great deal more to get there.

Ernest Hemingway, in a book of advice to writers, said that a writer should…“find what gave you emotion; what the action was that gave you excitement.

I LOVE that quote. And it made me think, “What is it that gave me emotion? What gave me excitement?” Sure, I am happy when a character gets the guy at the end, or finds the treasure, or gets to live in the big pretty castle and lives happily ever after. But that isn’t what keeps me reading the story. What keeps me reading, what gives me goosebumps and makes my heart pound, is when the heroine cradles her dying husband in her arms…when she is on the back of a thundering horse, shooting a gun over her shoulder at the villain chasing her….when she made some stupid mistake and screwed up the good thing she had going….THAT kind of stuff makes me want to turn the page.

Did the husband really die? Will she get away? (Or will the retort of the gun knock her on her butt?…because that is always fun) 😀 Will she be able to fix her mistake and get the good thing going again, or has she just completely screwed up her life?

So, this is what I try to do to my characters. I want to give the reader a reason to turn the page, by giving my characters a reason to keep going, giving them something to fix, to resolve, to get over and move past. Death, pain, despair, torture, emotion, threat, danger….these all get the blood pumping, the tears pouring…and make that happy ending all the happier for the mess they had to go through to get there.
