The Bridegroom Wore Plaid and Once Upon a Tartan by Grace Burrowes -a review

5 out of 5 for this reader folks! I have to say, I REALLY REALLY love Grace Burrowes writing. She is quickly becoming on of my ABSOLUTE FAVE authors. I am currently on summer vacay and it is killing me that I have to put my book down as often as I am, because she writes page turning stories. These two books are the first two books of her MacGregor Trilogy (note .. there is a novella in between book 1 and 2 but I have yet to read it). Our genre is regency/historical/Victorian romance with a serious dash of yummy “trying to be proper, but serious are so much yummier when they aren’t” highlanders.

The stories revolve around the MacGregor family and the English folk that they seem to hate in one second and take a fancy to the next. These families all seem to link into one another and create hilarious, action packed, angsty, HEA stories full of lust, bad guys, traditions and LOTS OF WIT!

Let’s meet them shall we??

REVIEW

I swear this book should of been called “The Highland Hookup”! LOL While we do have a main love story, there are quite a few other love stories that are going on that keep it exciting. This is definitely a case of two families made for each other!

Our main character is Ian MacGregor. He is an assumed Earl as his oldest brother has gone MIA and thus declared deceased. With this comes the responsibility of being the head and provider of his family. He is also assuming responsibility of removing the MacGragor family from ruin by agreeing to marry an English heiress.

Enter the Daniels family. Eager to marry his daughter Genie to a titled man, Baron Atstax (AKA CREEPOID) moves his entire family in for a long visit with the MacGregor family. Part of this family is Augusta who is the Baron’s niece and chaperon to Genie. It is Augusta who Ian takes a shine too though. Don’t feel bad for Genie though, she has her eyes set on Ian’s brother Gill. Ian’s other brother is hooking up with another Daniels member as well, and Ian’s sister is falling in love with the Baron’s son. Have you processed all that?? LOL

A slow simmering relationship (which comes to a serious hot, steamy boil), between Augusta and Ian begins. These two are clearly made for each other. They embark in a physical and emotional relationship believing that they only have this short time to treasure before saying goodbye. In the midst of this budding relationship, the ugly Baron Alstax is plotting Augusta’s murder as he is a devious, selfish and harbouring a secret that could land him in some serious hot water. Ian begins to slowly put the pieces together and between his family members, some of the Daniels family and his smart, beautiful Augusta, weave together a terrific climax of this story.

The bad guys NEVER win in a Grace Burrowes novel, but she can seriously make you sweat! LOL

DESCRIPTION

Hester MacDaniel is recovering from an engagement gone awry by summering at her brother’s holding in the Highlands, and looking after her brother’s young step-daughter, Fiona. Tiberius Flynn, heir to the English Marquis of Quinworth, appears on Hester’s doorstep claiming he’s Fee’s paternal uncle, and he’s been sent by her English relations to make the girl’s acquaintance. Tye believes his brother’s dying wishes compel him to take Fee south with him, but he doesn’t plan on Hester capturing his heart, even as she fights him tooth and nail for custody of Fiona

REVIEW

This was a fantastic continuation of this trilogy. In the first book we met our heroine of this book. Hester Daniels in book one was a easy going, full of life young lady coming into her own. Between these books, Hester is involved in a scandalous affair that she has taken to heart and has come back to Scotland to take care of her niece and properly hide from society. My heart really broke for Hester in this book.

One day, in trots this English, arrogant, aristocratic, pompous man named Tiberius Flynn (Tye), Earl of Srathroy and future Marquis of Quinworth who is claiming to be a paternal uncle to Hester niece Fiona. Fiona just adores this man from the beginning while Tye is a little taken back by the little girl who one minute has impeccable manners and the next minute can be found singing in tree branches and mucking around horses. However, little Fiona is known to take her Uncles hearts and wrap them around her finger, and soon Uncle Tye is in this position.

Hester and Tye really dislike each other at first and go at it with their words, bantering back and forth. Soon enough though they begin a friendship which develops into a fierce lusty and loving affair. They are stuck between a rock and a hard place though as they stand across from each other on opposite sides of a dilemma. Tye is very much a mutli-layered character and I loved seeing some of these layers peeled back. He is put into a horrible position by his family, to claim custody of a niece the family took no interest in. He is also finding a much needed peace in this country and in Hester’s arms. Hester has issues she is working out and it’s wonderful to see her come back into the strong beautiful woman she is. She is extremely loyal to her niece and she was just overall an easy leading lady to adore.

Like all of Grace Burrowes stories, she develops situations that you know will work out, but shock you with the amount of thought and creativity it takes to get there. I was so happy with this book and while there are some similarities to the first book, there was so much more to be had here! Sorry .. no spoilers .. WINK! LOL

You can read these as stand alones but you would enjoy the second book so much more with the first book read. We see many of the characters return and get a continuation of their story. If you love the highland settings and a good regency romance, I highly recommend this series. Grace Burrowes always delivers a thorough well thought out stories with some depth to her characters. She writes the steamy classy but hot too! LOL

HAPPY READING! 🙂

The Lonely Lords (Darius, Nicholas and Ethan) by Grace Burrowes-a combined review

The Lonely Lords
5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

WOW … just WOW! Does Grace Burrowes know how to write a beautiful story with intriguing chracters and storylines. Right from the get go I am completely captivated and drawn in. This review consists of the first three books of her new Historical Romance Lonley Lords Series, Darius, Nicholas and Ethan. Our setting is early 1800’s, England (be it city or country) and our story revolves around a gentleman who is lost is many ways and finds his lady (through the usual angst, drama, seduction and action). Each book is interconnected and you should to read them in order. As a matter of fact the first and second book run parallel to each other.

Okay on with the reviews! 🙂

1 – DARIUS Lord of Pleasures by GRACE BURROWES
Release Date: April 2, 2013

Darius

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

DESCRIPTION
Desperate, penniless, and shunned by his wealthy father, Darius Lindsey begins offering himself secretly to jaded society ladies. He hangs onto his last shreds of honor, but he’s losing ground financially each month.

That is until the aging Lord William Longstreet makes Darius an offer he can’t refuse: get the Lord’s pretty young wife-of-convenience, Lady Vivian, pregnant discreetly, and he will earn enough money to never want again. But problems lie ahead when the stunning Vivian captures his heart, and his clients refuse to let him go. Can Darius untangle himself without scandal and offer himself to Vivian heart and soul?

REVIEW

Right from the start we are thrown into a very uncomfortable chat between the elderly Lord William Longstreet and our main man Darius. Lord William has asked Darius to entertain his young wife Vivian (our leading lady) in the country and get her “with child”.

Darius, who has been shunned and financially abandoned by his father who happens to be an Earl (and a real *&^&*), has had to consort to whoring himself to very wicked and horribly natured high society women (these woman are seriously messed up in the head). So this conversation, while surprising, is not so far fetched. Seeing as the coin earned from this month in the country can provide future financial stability for Darius and those he is responsible for, he reluctantly agrees.

Vivian, who was once Lord Williams beloved first wife’s companion, married William after his wife’s passing. William married her to protect her from her evil step-father, ill intended suitors and because they shared a bond through his first wife. They are great friends and both are content with a marriage of friendship. Lord William has had some bad luck though and over the years has lost his two sons (that he had with his first wife) and therefore his heirs. He requires another heir so that his title and funds are not claimed by the crown upon his death so that is when this deal with Darius is struck.

Vivian and Darius spend the month together and come to realize that they are not only very compatible, but they are beginning to fall in love with each other (body discovery between these two is quite juicy at times .. TeeHee). Their month together is also successful.

Rich RICH characters (and I am not talking about moula here), that are woven into a well balanced, and flowing story. A wonderful start to this series.

An extraordinary and passionate tale of courage tested and fears overcome. Once you enter the lush Regency world of award-winningNew York Times and USA Today bestselling author Grace Burrowes, you’ll never want to leave.

REVIEW

Nicholas is a naughty, slutty, dreamy, flirt, large LARGE built, hilarious Lord. He took me right in and by the 10th page I was IN LOVE! LOL Nicholas comes with many secrets, and many reserves which make him a complex and complicated man.

Leah and Nicolas meet in a quiet room as both are trying to esacpe their prospective futures while attending a ball. This meeting is brief, honest and ends with a kiss. They are both quite taken with each other.

Nicholas is about to inherite an earldom and and has promised his ailing father that he will marry. Leah is in a desperate situation of her own where her life literally is hanging in the balance. As the two build the foundation to a beautiful friendship (and falling in love) Nicholas feels protective and responsible for Leah. This leads to the proposal of marriage. HOWEVER .. this is to be a “white” marriage. Meaning, no consumation, no children (Nicholas harbors serious secrets and fears). While Leah agrees to these terms, she believes she can break him down.

These two are something else to read. They are most suited and I loved the bursts of shock and secrets that came out throughout the story. There was some serious heat between them as well and Nicholas charater in general just has so much appeal.

We are also introduced to Nicholas’s brother Ethan in this story and you can see the set up for book 3.

An unforgettable Regency tale of two wounded people who get another chance at love. Award-winning New York Times and USA Todaybestselling author Grace Burrowes’s extraordinary writing will immerse you in a Regency world unlike any you’ve experienced.

REVIEW

MY FAVE so far! Ethan is so complex and multi layered, somewhat of a stick in the mud and his transformation throughout this story was so much fun to read!

Ethan (as revealed in book 2) is the bastard son of the recently deceased Earl and half brother to Nicholas. As young boys. these two were attached to hips. The old earl had far fetched reasons, but he sent Ethan away and this of course strained all relationships. Nicolas is desperate to be in his brother’s life. Ethan is a widower of a ill matched marriage, has two sons who have been raised by the estate staff and takes his pleasure in his ledgers and structured life.

Alice Portman is a governess is disguise. She is running from a past that is so horrid and scandalous she has even changed her name. She agrees to take on the governess position for Ethans two sons. She has terms however, and they include Ethan being more of a father to his children.

Bit by bit, these two develop the most honest friendship which turns to attraction. They steal kisses, but both of their scandalous pasts seem to hold them back from true love. Ethan transforms from a cold man to a loving father, wonderful friend, friendly neighbour. Man I rooted for him though this entire book.

As with all books of this genre, pasts never remain in the past and the scandals and secrets come to surface. The obstacles that need to avoided are great … but these two make it look effortless.

OVERALL .. WONDERFUL SERIES so far! I am looking forward to jumping into the next few! Is you love this genre, a beautiful love story you need to check this series out! Grace Burrowes delivers!

HAPPY READING!

Forbidden Vikings

Resist them if you can!

•••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: TO SIN WITH A VIKING is the first storyline in Michelle Willingham’s Forbidden Vikings historical romance series. The opening statements from the author ‘warn’ of trespassing into the realm of infidelity and I wondered at the time ‘why’ the warning to her readers. This is after all –A FICTIONAL STORYLINE – with fictional characters and is NOT an actual account of infidelity and betrayal and yet, many reviewers were taken aback by the storyline’s ‘touch’ on infidelity.

In My Humble Opinion-readers would not have questioned Styr’s desire for Caragh and potential betrayal to his wife without the author’s opening remarks. And for those who have objected to the hero’s supposed wandering heart-it appears that his wife was not necessarily faithful in all aspects of her marriage as well.

The storyline focuses on the capture of Styr Hardrata and his fight to find his wife and missing crewmates. Landing in what would now be known as Ireland, Styr finds himself chained in Caragh’s home and oddly attracted to the woman who holds him prisoner: and Caragh in return begins to fall for her captive. The pair begin a search for Caragh’s brother and Styr’s wife but what they discover is that the heart knows no boundary when the soul finds its’ mate.

As I read the storyline it becomes readily apparent that our hero Styr Hardrata is in a loveless marriage, arranged when he was seventeen, that has yet to produce an heir. Saying this, Styr’s attraction to Caragh is a major theme running throughout the story band Styr tries to remain faithful to his missing wife albeit with little help from Caragh. Their attraction to one another is palpable as Caragh pushes Styr to the limits of his patience and sexual desire. Styr is in a constant battle with his conscience and his guilt over his developing feelings for Caragh.

The characters are old world but the language is not as ‘old world styled’ as I would have thought. There are several secondary characters with potential storylines including Styr’s wife Elena and his friend Ragnar. The storyline is well paced with just enough background information about the leading characters so as not to overwhelm the premise.

But I want to point out that most of what can be perceived as infidelity is that of the mind-thoughts, desires and wants. Some people/readers believe that even thinking about/ having feeling for someone other than their mate is betrayal, but there is a fine line between truth and dishonor. And how many other fictional storylines have all of us read that contain a similar premise or plot? Rape and Torture? Murder and Abuse? And yet, I don’t see readers readying an army of morality judges.  After all, the title says it all -To Sin-and that should be enough to let the reader know this isn’t all hearts and flowers.

To Sin With A Viking is a well written, compelling storyline that will make some people think and others will take it for what it is-a fictional storyline about two people who fall in love with each other under extenuating circumstances.

Scottish Brides – Where Regency elegance meets Highland passion!

REVIEW

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

What a yummy, highlander, medieval, historical romance by Nicola Cornick. The first book in her new Scottish bride series, the Lady and the Laird did not let me down! In fact, it introduced me to another author of one of my fave genres!

Both of our main characters first meet at a younger age where a brief encounter and kiss left its impression. Flash forward ten years and their lives are both completely different from what they believed they’d be! Both have suffered horrible loss and have used this as a crutch to hold them back in their lives. Once they meet again however, all that is about to change!

Our leading lady is Lady Lucy MacMorlan who is extremely intelligent (be that book smart), very disciplined on how a high standing lady is to behave and has decided to completely swear off men and marriage. She does however possess a rather impressive talent of writing naughty love letters which has now landed her in hot water! You see .. she wrote letters for her brother (the money she made she donates to charity) to woo a lady that has been promised to another. When her brother and this lady elope, Lady Lucy’s secret comes out …. to the one man she wouldn’t want it too! 😉

Enter Laird Robert, Marquis of Methhaven. He is the poor man who is jilted at the alter. There is a serious complication that does not include a silly thing like love that made this event so tragic. You see, Lady Lucy and Laird Robert’s families have been warring over land for centuries, and a locked in peace treaty states that Laird Robert MUST marry a woman by the opposing clan (that’d be Lucy’s) and produce an heir within a year, or lose the land and banish his people into a life of absolute hell (Lucy’s cousin would inherit all this and he is real scumbag). Now … how convenient for Laird Robert when it is discovered that Lady Lucy happens to be the last woman from this ancestry and the only woman that Laird Robert can marry!

See where this is going?? On we go to a wonderful story of friendship, struggles, danger, kidnapping, patience, secrets, despair, loss, action, humour, family and love. This book has it all! I am not going to give anything away other than that, but if you like a story about a man who has to seduce a woman and use all he has to do so … while a woman does everything she can to avoid him regardless of the fact that she realizes he is crumbling her fragile wall .. you’ll love this book!

Great first book to a fabo new series. I will be reading the next book and more from Nicola Cornick!

HAPPY READING!

•••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: First just a word of caution, this book is very hard to put down! LOL…

It’s difficult to do this review justice as it’s one of those you have to read to believe how good it is! The story is one of basic old world abuse of wives, only this one escapes and finds the love of her life. It’s actually double that, as the hero has also been abandoned and heartbroken…

Madeleine is a young woman married to a monster. Henri de Picassaret is a vineyard owner and makes champagne. He is wealthy and has had three previous wives who have died. Her father thought he would be a good provider for her, not knowing of his love of “punishing” his wives. But after the marriage Heenri forbade her contact with her family and told her family the break was her idea. He has “punished” her for small failings often and severely. She has many scars on her back and legs from his punishments and even a circular scar on her cheekbone from his signet ring. She walks with a slight limp, due to a broken knee from Henri, when she told him she didn’t think her lack of children was her fault or his previous wives, but his. Madeleine is desperate to escape from Henri because she knows she will not live much longer if he has his way.

Fearing for her life and planning to return to her family, then to spend the rest of her life in a convent so as not to evade her marriage vows, Madeleine escapes via a “sally port”. She has secreted many of the jewels Henri gifted to her, (more for his own reputation than for caring for her) inside the hems of her tunics and skirts to pay for her passage to her family in France and her care at the convent.

Finally escaping to the road, she comes later upon two men riding, and fearing capture or that they were bandits she claims to be the wife of Lord Montayne – who has a reputation so dreadful that no one would touch her lest he come after them. However, since one of the men was Lord Montayne they knew she was lying but went along with her story to see what she was up to. Garrett who called himself “Sir Garrett” to Madeleine and his friend “Sir Ashby” decided to help “Lady Montayne” get to London as they tried to find out who she really was.

Garrett’s wife Lynette had run away about three years before and had never been heard of again, leaving him with a lovely little daughter and a broken heart. Here the story truly begins, though I’ve left enough details out so you will still be surprised and intrigued!
Of course, Garrett begins to fall for lovely Madeleine, who BTW sings like a bird and can tell imaginative and wonderful stories to entertain everyone! A very talented lady who plays the lute (another valuable she brought along – her only real possession). Garrett and Ashby stop at a small house outside of London to repair his horse’s shoe, Madeleine gets the smithy’s wife to help her hide from the men (concocting another story for the smithy’s wife) since she’s afraid to go to London with them because she really isn’t Lady Montayne…

Ok, enough spoilers…this is a marvelous and intricate story of desperation, escape, finding love…also of forgiveness, mystery, danger, and righting old wrongs! The tale is incredibly well told with some humor as well as a building romance. The characters are loveable, some you can hate, and some are comic…a little bit of everything!

Lauren Linwood is a wonderful writer with a fantastic imagination. I hope this is only the beginning of many wonderful tales! Believe me, it’s hard to put this one down, I found myself awake until the wee hours of the morning because I just had to know what was going to happen! This book has it all ladies! Please enjoy this one for yourselves, no regrets!

Interview beige

The Reading Cafe would like to introduce the author behind MUSIC FOR MY SOUL-Lauren Linwood

Lauren LinwoodTRC: Hi Lauren and welcome to The Reading Cafe. We would like to start with some background information.  Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Website / Goodreads/ Facebook / Twitter

Lauren: I turned my passion for history into a career and taught teenagers for many years, hoping to spark their interest about people in the past and help them connect today with previous yesterdays.

I’m a so-so cook (although I do make a mean tortilla soup) who’s fascinated by MasterChef and The Next Food Network Star. I love to watch historical dramas such as Downton Abbey or The Borgias, yet I also wouldn’t miss Modern Family, White Collar, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, or Grey’s Anatomy.

I wish I could be the host for House Hunters on Vacation, eat at least once in one of Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants, and get 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Something tells me none of these will ever happen!

TRC: Your bio states you have an interest in the medieval historical period. What about this era draws you in and why?

Lauren: Everything! The politics, culture, war, architecture & art, the Church, the Black Death. It actually spans quite a long period in history. So much happened, and that’s the beauty of writing a story with such a rich backdrop of history to draw from.

Music for My SoulTRC: MUSIC FOR MY SOUL is your May 2013 release in the medieval fiction genre. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Lauren: As the third wife of an abusive French vineyard owner, Madeleine Bouchard hasn’t produced the expected heir after three years of marriage. Fearing her husband plans to kill her, she flees during a trip to England. Unable to make her way home, she joins a troupe of traveling mummers and reinvents herself as the only woman troubadour in the land, captivating audiences with both song and story.

Nobleman Garrett Montayne’s fascination with Madeleine causes him to pay the troupe to bypass their next stop in order to journey to his estate. Though he suspects Madeleine of being a thief with dark secrets, love blossoms between them under the magical moon of summer solstice.
But Madeleine’s past is about to catch up with her, as her husband is set to arrive to conduct business with Garrett. Madeleine determines to free herself from her loveless marriage and make a new life with Garrett, no matter what the cost.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Lauren: I wrote MUSIC FOR MY SOUL to be a stand-alone, yet Garrett’s very charming best friend kept trying to run away with the story! I finally told him if he’d go off to London for part of the book, I promised him he could come back to Stanbury in time to see things resolved, plus I’d write him his own story. I’m hoping my editor at Soul Mate Publishing will be interested in hearing how this flirtatious nobleman has his heart stolen and wants to settle down with his one true love.

TRC: How did you keep your plot of MUSIC FOR MY SOUL unpredictable without sacrificing content or believability especially for a storyline of the medieval genre?

Lauren: Having Madeleine join a troupe of traveling mummers as its troubadour helped somewhat. Being on the road lends itself to unpredictability. When the troupe comes to a faire at Stanbury, the hero’s home, it’s something new and out of the ordinary for his world, so that also changes up what usually happens at a castle. And then I have Madeleine injure herself so that the troupe goes on without her, and she has to think beyond Plan B, C, & D.

TRC: Do the characters talk to you and direct your writing, or do you have complete control over the direction of their story?

Lauren: Oh, I wish I had control over these people! Sometimes it’s like herding cats to get them to do as I wish. I start out with a very general outline, usually a single page with a bullet point list of 15-20 things I want to happen throughout my story. I feel if I get too deeply into an outline, it’ll take the fun out of the writing for me and my characters. I like being surprised!

One example bullet point in MUSIC FOR MY SOUL?

“Madeleine runs away – heads to London.”
Now how she got there – and what happened along the way – simply unfolded as I wrote. I run a movie in my head as I sit at my computer, so my people act and speak while I type furiously to get everything down. At times I try to have them streamline things and take the interstate to their destination. They much prefer getting off on farm-to-market roads and bypasses and meandering awhile, finding new conflicts and dangers that I hadn’t foreseen. They can be quite unpredictable! Eventually, they get back on track – but it’s always on their terms – never mine.

TRC: How thoroughly do you plan out your characters and story before you begin the first draft?

Lauren: I always start with the name of the hero and heroine. Once I have those names, I start visualizing them from their hair length and texture to height and body frames. I dress them, often researching the era online and saving pictures of clothing I think they would wear. Then I sprinkle in character traits. Are they brave? Impatient? Stubborn? After that I give them families, friends, and a back story. Half of this may never make the pages I write, but I have it in mind as I do so.

Once those character sketches are complete (definitely for the hero and heroine, sometimes for the antagonist and a few important secondary characters, but not as full-blown), then I do the brief outline I mentioned. I keep it a bit vague to give me options and let the characters be partners with me throughout the writing journey.

Henry and EmmaTRC: If you could virtually cast the lead characters of Music For my Soul which actors and models would be represent your ideal image?

Lauren: I adore Henry Cavill and think he’d make a terrific Garrett. Emma Stone has the spunk and inventiveness that characterizes Madeleine.

TRC: What challenges (research, historical, etc) did you face writing this particular novel?

Lauren: Research is much easier nowadays with the Internet. I had access to pictures and diagrams and timelines. The hardest part is integrating historical details that will lend an air of verisimilitude and help my readers learn a little about the period while they’re reading without coming across as a dry history lesson or distracting them from my story.

TRC: How do you deal with the stress and anxiety of writing deadlines?

Lauren: Red wine. Yoga. And I walk 4-5 miles almost every day, which is my major stress-buster. I’m actually very organized, so I like knowing my deadline and plan accordingly. Yes, I was that girl in high school who turned her senior research paper in 2 days early. Hey – it was done and I wanted it gone! Of course, everyone in my class hated me as they raced to slap theirs together, but I digress…

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about yourself?

Lauren: As a debut author, I just want to land on people’s radars! I doubt there are ANY misconceptions about me because people are just learning about who I am.

TRC: If you could become a contestant on one of the reality television shows, on which show would you like to be a participant?

Lauren: I have never missed a single episode of Survivor. I wish I had the smarts, athleticism, and social game to play it … but besides lacking in those areas, I HATE SNAKES!!! And I’m a mosquito magnet. I’d be the first contestant ever evacuated for having so many mosquito bites, I’d be on death’s doorstep.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Lauren: I’m finishing up a western historical about a heroine who writes dime novels under a man’s pen name. She jilts her groom at the altar (Don’t worry, she didn’t love him!) and runs west to experience what she writes about. She falls for a gambler running from a gunslinger who wants him dead.

I’m also working on final edits for two western historicals coming out soon. OUTLAW MUSE is an October release about a schoolmarm about to hang for murder and the English playwright who stops the execution and takes off with her. Along the way, he finds his muse and proves her innocence. A GAME OF CHANCE comes out in January, and it’s the story of mistaken identity, with twins literally separated at birth. They don’t know the other exists, and the heroine puts two and two together – all while she’s impersonating her own mother! It’s a true story of mistaken identity.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Lauren: Simply that I appreciate The Reading Café for hosting me and helping give MUSIC FOR MY SOUL exposure. Thanks so much!

LIGHTNING ROUND

Favorite Food – dark chocolate, hands down (when seafood is not calling my name)

Favorite Dessert – crème brulee

Favorite TV Show – Game of Thrones

Last Movie You Saw – Now You See Me (as I’m answering – but I’m sure I’ll have seen another half-dozen by the time you’re reading this because I’m mad for movies!)

Dark or Milk Chocolate – the darker, the better

Favorite Flower – tulips

TRC: Thank you Lauren for taking the time to answer our questions.  We wish you all the best in your writing career and congratulations (once again) on
the release of Music for My Soul.

What the Duke Desires

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 18, 2013

Maximilian Cale, the Duke of Lyons, accepted long ago that his kidnapped brother was dead. When a cryptic note from investigator Tristan Bonnaud claims otherwise, Max seeks out Tristan’s sister, Lisette—and is infuriated to learn that Tristan has also mysteriously vanished. Have the siblings perpetrated an elaborate hoax? Or is the fiercely protective beauty as innocent as she claims them to be?

Fearful that the powerful Duke will destroy Tristan’s career in his zeal for the truth, the clever Lisette convinces Max to accompany her to Paris in a joint search for their loved ones. But their journey takes a seductive twist when they pose as an ordinary husband and wife—not an English Duke with a tarnished family name and the illegitimate daughter of a viscount—and discover an exhilarating passion free from the damning secrets of the past. With the line between danger and desire enticingly blurred, they discover that some mysteries, like those of the heart, are answered tenfold in the bliss of a true and trusting love

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: WHAT THE DUKE DESIRES is the first storyline in The Duke’s Men historical romance series by Sabrina Jeffries with the introduction of Maximilian Cale aka The Duke of Lyons and the woman who will steal more than his heart but his soul and the very air that he breathes-Lisette Bonnaud.

The storyline focuses on the Duke’s search for the man who claims to know the whereabouts of Max’s missing and presumably dead brother and how this search will bring Max up close and personal with Lisette. When it is discovered that Lisette’s brother Tristan is also missing, the couple will embark on a cross continent journey that will force Max and Lisette to pose as husband and wife to ensure her reputation stays intact.

There is much family background history revealed throughout the storyline including the introduction of Lisette’s brothers and extended family of Maximilian Cale. Lisette is more than conscience and aware of her lack of social standing within society and therefore entering into any sort of relationship with the Duke, she fears will tarnish his reputation. And the Duke’s family history, although most of it not public knowledge, has the man denying his feelings for the woman with whom he has fallen in love. A history of secrets, betrayal and lies will be revealed forcing Max to walk away from a future with Lisette. When spiteful and heartbreaking words are exchanged, Max knows he has damned himself to a life without the woman he loves.

The sexual tension within the storyline was hit and miss due to the continuous battle of words between the couple and, in particular the Duke’s (Max) occasional snippy attitude and highbrow manner. His constant need to use words in anger, against Lisette, made him a difficult character at times to embrace even though Lisette was more than willing to forgive the man every time. In many novels, the back and forth banter fuels the sexual pressure but there was something missing in this particular story. Max’s attraction to Lisette was cooled with thoughts of his own family secrets, and Lisette knew that her mother’s reputation would push away any thoughts of a future with the Duke as her own reputation by tarnished by association. Whenever the couple appeared to make headway in their relationship, painful memories and potential legal liabilities would interfere.

Most of the storyline focuses on the developing relationship between Max and Lisette and, the build-up to discovering the truth behind the Duke’s missing brother. The big reveal and identity of everyone concerned read like a who’s who in the family tree. There were so many different branches the family tree started to look like a forest-but for the trees.

What The Duke Desires is a fast-paced introductory storyline that reveals the tainted history behind two different families, yet very similar on many levels. Money does not make one immune to gossip and disease, and a life of struggle will soften a woman’s heart towards a man who has lived an entire life built on a lie.

Review:

How to Tame Your Duke by Juliana Gray is the first book in her new Historical Romance series. Early on we are introduced to the three sisters, (Louisa, Stefanie and Emilie), who will be part of each book in this series.  They are princesses on the run from a plot to overthrow their German principality crown, as their father has been killed.  Their uncle, the Duke of Olympia, puts together a plan to separate them in disguise, until it is safe.

How to Tame Your Duke is Emilie’s story. She travels in disguise as a man, Mr. Grimsby, to Duke of Ashland’s estate to tutor his 16 year old son.  What ensues is a different and fun story that builds into a wonderful romance.  I loved Emilie, both as herself and as Mr. Grimsby.  Her friendship with Freddie, the duke’s son was fun.

Duke Ashland is our hero in this book.  He stays on his estate, as he does not like to travel, since he lost his hand, and was badly scarred on the right side of his face during war time.  His wife left him years ago, when he came home from the war, leaving him to take care of his son alone.  Emilie was shocked when she first saw Ashland, looked at his perfect handsome profile, and then to see his flawed side.  But as time goes on, Emilie finds herself becoming attracted to Ashland, but of course, she is unable to show any feelings, as they see her as Mr. Grimsby.

Until Emilie goes on her day off to the hotel nearby to relax as herself, but under another assumed name.  To her shock, she sees Ashland at the hotel, and discovers why he visits there weekly.  Emilie is mistaken as the woman Ashland was waiting for, and comes face to face with him in his room.  He also is under an assumed name, and when he meets Emily, he immediately begins to fall for her, as she treats him not like the other woman, whom he will not let see his face.  Their liason begins tentatively at first, as Ashland has no idea that this Emily, is Grimsby, and what starts out only as her reading to him in blindfold, to a full fledged sexual affair after a few visits, that Emilie cannot stop meeting Ashland.

What follows is a wonderful romance that builds in time,  and the obstacles in the way that could cause danger to Ashland, that prevents Emilie from pushing more for this relationship; not to mention her at some point revealing who she is.  It was a fun and interesting story, as Ashland becomes embroiled in Emilie’s situation, and the danger involved.  But true love will always suffice in romance, and though Gray keeps this open for the next few books, we do get a happy solution to keep us coming back for more.  A wonderful and different type of romance by Juliana Gray.  I look forward to the next book in this series, which belongs to Stefanie.

Sydney Dovedale Series by Jayne Fresina-a review

Sydney Dovedale Series by Jayne Fresina- a multiple review

Sydney Dovedale Series

A solid 4 out of 5 for the first three books of this series folks!

Jayne Fresina is a new author to me and I loved the covers of her books and the titles so much I had to check them out. I was pleasantly surprised to find another historical romance author to add to my “have to read” list. Jayne Fresina really came out with something different in the historical romance genre and that was to add a serious dash of comedy to the formal. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the situations, the conversations, the everyday bantering (you know I love me some banter..lol) that our hero’s, heroine’s and secondary characters engaged in.

So what are these book about?? Well the premise of these books are about some of the locals and not so local residents of a small town called Sydney Dovedale. This town is outside of London England and in my mind I saw many farms, the main rich folk home on the hill, the mini “downtown” for marketing and the old bitty gossipers who knew everyone’s business (and you likely didn’t want them to know because it would be all over town within 5 minutes) by managing to be seen everywhere but their own homes. It’s a town where relationships are close (be it good or bad), people work hard and where you cannot get away with ANYTHING! There if still that line of “be proper” where the rich are rich and uppity and the poor are poor and had better remember their place.. YEAH RIGHT! 😉

These three books do span over many years and I absolutely LOVED THAT. It was like reading a sequel to the first or second book while enjoying a whole new story that you see forming in previous books. I enjoyed being completely annoyed by a character in one book and then having the author make me adore them in another! That’s talent! 🙂

Okay .. on with the reviews!

A Scandalous Lady

Seeks Handsome Stranger

Lazarus Kane has been searching for Sophie half of his life. She may not remember him, but he could never forget her. But the past is a dangerous thing, and it’s best if his remains secret if he wants to tempt Sophie with…

A Most Improper Proposal

Review

In this book we meet Miss Sophie Valentine. Miss Sophie is in her late 20’s, a wallflower and resigned to live the remainder of her life as a spinster. She is also very quirky and rebellious by nature which has left her as a fond topic of scandalous conversation among the town people of Sydney Dovedale. I would love to think she marches to the beat of her own drum (I love that about her). Sophie lives with her brother and his sloth, no good for nothing wife and is considered to be wealthy and proper member of society.

The story opens with Sydney contemplating jumping off a balcony, because she is feeling dark, bored, very impulsive and has just been caught doing the nasty with her fiance James Hartley (ya know the guy she is “suppose” to marry) at a ball. She isn’t known for thinking anything through and after seeing her fiance show intimacy with a serving maid, she decides to jump. Well jumping lands her with a nasty scar on her face, the end of her engagement and a whole lot of embarrassment for the family.

Many years later, 10 and a half to be exact, Sophie gets pissed off for some reason and decides to post an impulsive “Looking for a HUBBY” advertisement” in the London paper. She does not believe for one minute that anyone will respond … until someone does. One day while reading a naughty book high in a tree, a man somehow manages to get her to come down and swoops her into some yummy kisses, igniting a small fire within her. Enter or hero of the story Lazarus Kane. He is now known as the town “stranger” and while many are repulsed by him, many are intrigued as well. He carries himself as if he is wealthy, but is dressed as if he isn’t. MYSTERY!

Mr Kane has come is response to the advertisement and would like to marry Sophie but she declines telling him she was acting out of impulse and her brother does not approve of this match and is completely scandalized that his sister would once again embarrass her family. Her brother also knows that James (her former fiance) has returned and is expressing interest once again. Little does Sophie know, Lazarus has reasons why he wants to pursue this marriage and will do all he can to make it happen.

Now Sophie has two potential callers and off we go playing a game of cat and mouse for the rest of the story, get some pretty heated scenes and see Sophie really turn things around and decide once and for all what it is she wants out of her life!

Okay, so this was my least fave of this series as there were times I really felt it was a little all over the map. We are introduced to a large number of characters that do play significant roles into future books, but I remember feeling a little unattached at times because there was so many coming at me. I admit I do love a good cat and mouse chase, and while this book had some great scenes, I felt annoyed at the indecisiveness of our heroine, the patience of out hero and the lack of ZAZOOM I like to feel when a couple is fighting that intense attraction .

I truely hate it when I read a book and find something that was just “off” about it, but I can’t put my finger on it! This wasn’t a bad book by any means, and truthfully as I read the 2nd and 3rd I really loved these two characters. Something was missing and I found I had some questions that were not answered to my liking.

That being said … you really should read this book to dive into the next book because that book is AMAZING! 😉

It can only end in a wicked wedding…

Review

I LOVED THIS BOOK! I was so happy I read through the first one because this series is now GO GO GO for me. GUSH! LOL

We first meet out heroine Miss Ellie Vyne in the first book of this series as she is a close friend of Sophie’s and a proclaimed enemy of our hero Mr James Hartley. Well this stance is reciprocated quite fondly by James and we learn that this hatred stems from a backlash of family history among the parents, uncles and such of the Vyne and Hartley families. It really has nothing to do with these two directly.

Ellie is a spitfire, says it like she sees it and will not hold back to spare your feelings. She is not afraid to fight for what she wants and protect those she feels she must protect. James is far from the idiot I thought him to be in the first book. While he is still pompous, arrogant and devilishly handsome, now we see a softer side and a rather caring personality come through (small note to say that James is given some shocking news in the first book).

In order to procure funds for her family, Ellie has to disguise herself as a Count and gamble with the men. She manages to get her hands on some diamonds that belong to James and James wants them back. He is lead to believe that Ellie is the Counts “lady friend” and decides to follow her all across the country side to his home town of Sydney Dovedale.

Little does James know that many months prior to all this, the lady he met at a masquerade ball (one who he knows is the perfect match for him) just so happens to be Ellie. Ellie enjoys keeping this secret from him as she has finally come to terms that she has been in love with James for many years and hates that she is in love with him, but enjoys pushing all his buttons and seeing him sweat. Well James is not so dim witted, and begins to unravel the mysteries himself and decides to give it back to her as good as she deals to him.

Through a convenient case of amnesia, some hiding from privileged life, forced time together, really getting to know each other and trying to do one better than the other, these two make the most interesting, HILARIOUS, dumb ass trifling pair that could ever grace this small town. The banter that these two participate in left me in stitches. They are so deserving and meant for each other.

We are also introduced to 10 year old Miss Mercy Danforthe, who after being saved by James in a potential riding accident in the park one day, has decided she is in love with him and just so happens follow James and Ellie to our small town, after running away from home. Miss Mercy is a privileged brat to put it nicely. *Rubs hands together* you know there is a story waiting there! LOL

Within this story, we are reintroduced to some secondary characters, revisit Sophie and Kane, and again introduced to a few more townspeople who you cannot help but to love or hate.

For me, Ellie fits my ideal heroine. She is so easy to love and admire and cheer for. I have to say, James I was worried about as he didn’t do it for me in the first book. Jayne Fresina made be fall in love with him, and he had to make some serious choices in this book that could of blown up in his face. I love that he made them, stood by them and became a hero I could love. He had a really playful side that was completely endearing to me. James also had to confront some issues and embrace others that he thought may have swayed Ellie.

This book was a page turner. I couldn’t wait to see what trouble was ahead, what words were going to uttered and how situations were going to be handled!

Lady Mercy DanforthjpgLady Mercy Danforthe Flirts With Scandal by Jayne Fresina
Book 3 Sydney Dovedale Series

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO/ The Book Depository

4.5 out of 5

Description

Lady Mercy likes her life neat and tidy. She prides herself on being practical – like her engagement to Viscount Grey, whose dark colouring co-ordinates very well with her favourite furnishings. But things start to get messy when her best friend abandons her fiance at the altar, leaving it up to Mercy to help the couple. There’s just one problem. The jilted man is Rafe Hartley—Mercy’s former husband.

Rafe has not forgiven Mercy for deserting him when they were seventeen. Their hasty marriage was declared void by law, but in his eyes the bossy little vixen was still his wife, even if the marriage lasted only a few hours. And Mercy “Silky Drawers” Danforthe still owes him a wedding night.

Review

This was another absolutely fabo read. We met Lady Mercy Danforthe is book 2 and let me tell you .. if i could of kicked a boot up an arse it would of been hers. She was a BRAT. Entitled, “the world revolves around me”, “what do you mean I can’t have it?”, BRAT BRAT BRAT! LOL

We also met Rafe in book 2 (he is James son by that serving maid in book 1). At that time, Rafe is also young, comes from the streets, has had to fight for everything he has in life .. he’s TOUGH!

Flash forward another ten years and all of a sudden these two look a whole lot different.

Lady Mercy Danforthe lives in London and is a perfectionist extreme. She likes it neat and tidy, wrapped up in a pretty bow, all controlled and to her liking (even her chosen fiance the Viscount). She is precise, feels responsible for others, and certainly not anything like the young girl she use to be.

Mr Rafe Hartley, is a farmer who resides in Sydney Dovedale. He now knows who is father is and while he embraces that, he is very set in his ways with regards to not allowing his father to help in life. He is strong and proud, capable and handsome.

A few years ago these two decided impulsively to get married. Just before the marriage was consummated, Mercy’s brother barged in an made sure that the wedding was stricken from both their lives. While Mercy carried on, Rafe always felt robbed of his right as a husband and what he wanted in life … Mercy.

These two are reunited when Mercy’s lady maid and BFF Molly decides to jilt Rafe at the alter because she wishes to live a different life. Somehow she manages to talk Mercy into breaking the bad news to Rafe and the fireworks start from there. The minute these two are reunited the banter starts, the sexual tension builds and their lives become ever changed.

It seems as the weeks go by, there is one thing or another keeping Mercy in town and Rafe clawing at her skirts. Mercy finds it harder and harder to bat him away just because he goes against all she has planned for her life. Bit by bit, her wall starts to crumble until they both find themselves under the pieces and quite liking it there.

Mercy impressed me wholeheartedly throughout this book. Like James, Jayne Fresina found a way for me to love this heroine. She sincerely cares for people and their welfare and it is evident through many actions she does around this small town. She is charming yet can be forceful and quite sharp tongued when she wants to be and she comes back at Rafe blow by blow and stands her ground.

Rafe is a doll. He can be stubborn and a little dim witted at times but he is so lovable. I think my fave thing within this story was the many names he had for Mercy within their banter. Let me give you a taste …. Mercy Fancy-Breeches, Lady Bossy-Breeches, Clever-Drawers, Lady Know-All, Frosty-Bottom, and Dainty-Breeches (think he has something of a liking to her underwear?? TEEHEE) Seriously reading all those made me chuckle!

I loved the build up of this story and to see how they turned out left me very satisfied. I enjoyed once again the secondary characters and the more I get into this series, the more investing I am in this town. I loved checking in with Sophie and Kane, James and Ellie and seeing how their lives together have developed.

So, although the first book was just okay for me, the second and third really came to play! I have added this series to a “must read” when the next one comes out. I am really hoping that Molly and Mercy’s brother are paired together as they have the proper makings for a good read. If you are really into historical romance and like that added dash of humour than this is certainly for you. You do have to read the books in succession or I am afraid you just may miss out on too much information. I don’t think I could of enjoyed them as much without reading them in order!

HAPPY READING!
