Merryn Mantel and Geoffrey de Montfort have loved each other since childhood. Once betrothed, Geoffrey leaves for the wars in France for five long years. Upon his return, the two marry and spend one blissful night consummating their love and making plans for their future.

But her new husband vanishes the next day without a trace. Merryn grieves for almost seven years—and then Geoffrey returns to her—changed from the boy and man she knew and worshipped. This stranger refuses to reveal where he has been and why he stayed away for so long.

Will her husband’s silence create a rift too large to heal, or can Merryn and Geoffrey recapture the love they once shared?

REVIEW: The talented author Lauren Linwood has begun a new series, Knights of Valor. Book one is titled Word of Honor, and is begun in 1351 in England, during King Edward’s rule.

The Prologue finds our main characters, sixteen-year-old Geoffrey De Montfort and his recently betrothed, thirteen-year-old Merryn vowing love and saying goodbye for a while, as Geoffrey would leave for France to fight for his king. It’s a tender and loving opening, letting everyone know how a rare love match had been made between these two neighbors.

Chapter One finds us in France 1356, Geoffrey is discussing war policy with Sir Thomas. They drank to their King and his son, another Edward (the Black Prince). On his way back to his tent, Geoffrey discovers a neighbor of his engaged in whoring and betraying his king and cause. Barrett, son of Berold, earl of Winterbourne. The charges resulted in a trial by combat which Geoffrey won, resulting in the beheading of Barrett, just as his father arrived from his own fighting. Berold vows to Geoffrey to make him suffer and pray for death someday, which Geoffrey dismisses as the words of a distraught father (feeling guilty for his part in the son’s death).

This marvelous story continues in November of 1356 as Geoffrey returns to marry his Merryn and begin their life together…they have a marvelous wedding and one night of bliss before all hell breaks loose!

That’s the setup, I’ll not spoil this marvelous story by telling more. The writing is clear and wonderful, the tale exciting and emotional. Just when you wonder what else could these two young people so much in love could go through…our talented author takes the mystery and twisting to another level, both enjoyable and frustrating at the same time.

If you love tales of knights and ladies, love and adventure, you won’t want to miss this series. It’s well written, incredibly interesting (had a hard time not putting it down…so of course I didn’t). I found it both exciting and entertaining. It’s much more than just a good story…an epic tale of the kind of love we all dream about.

Developing my Heroine for Word of Honor

I am a Pride and Prejudice fan from way back. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read Jane Austen’s masterpiece, much less admit how many times I’ve watched the BBC mini-series (COLIN FIRTH!) or the 2005 film with Keira Knightley. Actually, I wouldn’t mind telling this to readers at The Reading Café, but just in case my husband catches this post on my FB or Twitter feed? He would be flabbergasted at the double digit numbers . . . so I suppose I’ll keep my readings & viewings a secret. For now.

One of the reasons I love Austen’s classic tale so much is because of heroine Elizabeth Bennet. Lizzy is intelligent, compassionate, loyal, witty, charming, and feisty—everything I love in a heroine. Of course, she’s not perfect. Perfect is boring. No reader wants to read perfect, and Lizzy does have a few (fixable) faults. She’s a great conversationalist, but her sharp tongue gets her into trouble sometimes. Her biggest flaw is that she tends to judge people a little too hastily and harshly, which occurs when she first meets Mr. Darcy. It’s this mistaken impression she gets of him which leads her to reject his proposal of marriage the first time around.

Thank goodness our hero finds her interesting enough to hang around, hoping that he can change her mind. Lizzy gradually realizes that Darcy, besides being impossible handsome and wealthy, has something truly important to her. He possesses a noble character. She realizes her prejudice against him is undeserved. This was truly the only obstacle to finding lasting happiness with him, as she has fallen in love with him after seeing many instances of this good character in action. His feelings for her never change, but hers do an about face.

Romance writers try to give both their hero and heroine character flaws which they must overcome during the course of the novel and their growing relationship. In my latest medieval romance, Word of Honor, I wanted just as strong a heroine as Elizabeth Bennet.

Merryn Mantel is betrothed to her childhood friend and sweetheart, Geoffrey de Montfort, who leaves England to fight against France in the Hundred Years’ War. Merryn matures into a woman in the five years her betrothed is away. They marry upon his return, but Geoffrey vanishes without a trace the next day. In the years Geoffrey is away, Merryn assumes an incredible amount of responsibility.

Upon Geoffrey’s return, she finds him to be a stranger—and yet she, too, has had to change in order to cope with the circumstances of his disappearance. I had to walk a fine line and balance having Merryn continue to love Geoffrey—the new Geoffrey—and still be true to the woman she has become in his absence. I let her frustration show at the situation, but I allowed her to keep her sense of humor even when things proved tough. It didn’t hurt that she was already intelligent and compassionate, but I had to let Geoffrey see how she had changed, just as Merryn needed to understand how and why Geoffrey changed, as well. Love isn’t the issue between these two lovers; it’s trust. Both must learn once again to trust one another and respect the person each has become in the years of their separation.

I thoroughly enjoyed writing Merryn and Geoffrey’s love story, and I’m thrilled that they are the first book in the Knights of Valor series. In the upcoming five books, I have the pleasure of revisiting this couple again and watching their love mature even as other heroes and heroines appear so that I may tell their love stories, too.

Blast from the Past: Devil’s Embrace by Catherine Coulter-a review

Blast From the Past

Welcome to a new feature at The Reading Cafe-BLAST FROM THE PAST-a look back at some of the oldies but goodies in the world of literary romance and ‘bodice-ripper- style novels.  Our first installment is DEVIL’S EMBRACE by Catherine Coulter. Please enjoy Rachel’s review and tell us about some of your favorite romance story lines from the past.

From the author

Dear Reader:

Welcome to my very first historical romance, Devil’s Embrace, titled by my husband, and first published in 1982. I’ve updated it stylistically, edited it, trimmed it just a bit, and the art department designed a splendid new cover that magically includes some of the original art work.

Cassie Brougham and Anthony Welles, Earl of Clare, are my favorite characters of all time. Cassie has known the Earl of Clare all her life, but she’s in love with a soldier she’s been secretly writing to since she was fifteen. Now he’s home and they’re going to be married. But the day before her wedding, Anthony Welles kidnaps her aboard his yacht and sails away with her to Genoa, Italy; his stated intention to make her his wife.

Cassie is not happy about this.

This is an unusual love story, to say the least, that will make you weep and laugh and root for what you know is best for both of them. There is pain, doubt, captivation, and escape. But regardless of what happens, this is a love that is of the forever sort, something that is true and very real, and will stay close to your heart, I hope, for a very long time.

If you missed Devil’s Embrace the first time around, do read it now.

Enjoy,

Catherine Coulter (The Author)

REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

THIS BOOK! ONE SERIOUS HOT MESS .. and I loved every single wrong, abusive, degrading, dramatic, bodice ripping minute of it. LOL

So here is a “Blast from The Past” review of Catherine Coulter’s Devil’s Embrace (the first book of her Devil series) and keep in mind that this was first published in 1982. This was written well before there was an established new adult, biker/rocker. BDSM romance sub genre. This was written in the time when Bodice Rippers were the risque read and I personally may have snuck a book or two from my mother’s book shelf when I was a young girl to indulge in what I knew was wrong ..lol! I know many readers will see nothing but the abuse and lack of integrity in characters and yes that is not always my fave part, BUT, I am an emotional reader who loves to bask in the dramatic, and these old bodice ripper books always give me goosebumps, make me so seething angry that I want to whip my book across the room, make me cry at the unfairness in treatment of characters, and finally, completely feel agahst at the audacity that the author went … there! So once I am done reading a book like this .. I honestly find .. I am the HOT MESS who just read something so completely ridiculously brilliant, I feel I need to defend why I loved it. LOL

I will start this review by saying that there is the following. Rape, non-con everything, abuse, kidnapping etc .. if you are triggered by any of these, please skip this book.

We are set in the late 18th century and our heroine Cassie Brougham (high noble beauty) is about to marry the man of her dreams. Before she gets to say her “I do’s” and live happily ever after she is kidnapped by our hero Anthony Welles (he is an Earl) and taken away from everything she loves. In order to keep her bound to him, Anthony takes her virginity making her his in every way. He imprisons her to keep her close so he has every chance to change her anger into passion.

As they travel across water, foreign land, Anthony does everything wrong to get Cassie to come around and open her heart enough marry him. Cassie will not have any of it as she believes Anthony has ruined her life (and he has). As time goes by, Cassie slowly begins to give in to the passion Anthony teaches her and maybe even fall a little bit in love with him regardless of her angry heart.

Both Cassie and Anthony have crazy adventures, misunderstandings, jealous spiteful moments and so many other characters and situations thrown their way to do everything to make things harder. Sometimes, it’s even their own selves that get in their own way. This book has it all, but keep in mind it is seriously dark and quite frankly unkind at times.

Catherine Coulter is a vivid writer. She can write her words in a way that let’s me see beautiful (and not so beautiful) imagery in my mind. I gasped and tingled at some points in this story. Her secondary characters certainly had a place in this book, but my goodness her main characters were perfectly imperfect! You made me FEEL and FEEL HARSH Catherine .. that gives you a 5 star in my opinion, no matter what some will precieve as right or wrong in your story telling process.

Next month I will “Blast from the Past” the second book to this series and I am eager to indulge!

HAPPY BODICE RIPPING READING! 🙂

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date March 22, 2016

When Edwin Barlow, the Earl of Blakeborough, agrees to help his best friend’s impetuous ward, Lady Clarissa Lindsey, in her time of need, he knows he’s in for trouble. He’s been hunting for someone to wed, and she’ll just get in the way. Although captivated by the whip-smart, free-spirited beauty, he fears she’d be all wrong as a wife … if she would even take such a gruff cynic for her husband. Too bad he wants nothing more than to have her for his own.

Clarissa has no intention of marrying anyone—not Edwin, whom she’s sure would be an overbearing husband, and certainly not the powerful French diplomat stalking her. But when matters escalate with the diplomat, she chooses Edwin’s gallant offer of a marriage between friends in hopes that it will deter her stalker. She expects nothing more than an amiable union, but their increasingly tempestuous kisses prove more than she bargained for. When her stalker’s vow to expose the lovers’ deepest secrets threatens to destroy their blossoming attraction, will their tenuous bond withstand public ruin, or will Edwin lose all that’s important to him to protect his bride?

•••••••••••

REVIEW: THE STUDY OF SEDUCTION is the second full length installment in Sabrina Jeffries SINFUL SUITORS historical romance series-a spin off from ‘The Duke’s Men’ series. This is the Earl of Blakeborough, Edwin Barlow, and Lady Clarissa Lindsey’s story line. THE STUDY OF SEDUCTION can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Clarissa and Edwin) THE STUDY OF SEDUCTION follows the ‘fake fiance’ trope when Clarissa and Edwin must appear as betrothed to ward off a stalker intent on making Clarissa his own. Intent on claiming Clarissa as his wife, Count Durant-a French diplomat-insists that Clarissa is making a mistake when her betrothal quickly morphs into a wedding of convenience when information is presented that could harm both Clarissa and Edwin’s reputations both socially and within the family. What ensues is the building relationship between Clarissa and Edwin, and the Count’s continued pursuit of Clarissa Lindsey.

Edwin and Clarissa both believe that marriage is not in their futures. Clarissa has a secret that, if revealed, could destroy any hopes of a man falling in love with our story line heroine. Edwin is a man who has coveted Clarissa from afar. The romance is a slow build as our heroine continues to keep Edwin at a distance including adding a clause to her marriage contract. The $ex scenes are few and intimate but mostly implied. I did not feel the sexual attractions between our couple-sometimes keeping one another at arm’s length destroys the integrity of the romance plot line.

THE STUDY OF SEDUCTION is a friends to lovers/fake fiancé story line that looks at secrets and betrayals; friendship and family; romance and love. The premise is interesting and not without a twist or two; the characters are charming; the romance is sweet but the attraction and electricity was lacking due to the nature of the heroine’s fears and past.

Excerpt

Read CHAPTER 1 from THE STUDY OF SEDUCTION

“Clearly, you have lost your bloody mind.”
When every member present in the reading room of St. George’s Club turned to look at Edwin Barlow, Earl of Blakeborough, he realized how loudly he’d spoken.
With a quelling glance that sent them scrambling to mind their own business, Edwin returned his attention to Warren Corry, the Marquess of Knightford. “This plan of yours can’t possibly work.”
Warren was Edwin’s closest friend. Really, his only friend, aside from his sister’s new husband Jeremy Keane. Edwin didn’t make friends easily, probably because he didn’t suffer fools easily. And society was full of fools.
That was precisely why Edwin, Jeremy, and Warren had started this club—so they could separate the fools from the fine men. So they could protect the women in their lives from fortune-hunters, gamblers, rakehells, and every other variety of scoundrel in London.
Warren was clearly taking that mission very seriously. Perhaps too seriously.
“Clarissa will never agree,” Edwin said.
“She has no choice.”
Edwin narrowed his gaze on Warren. “You actually believe you can convince your sharp-tongued ward to let me squire her about town during the season.”
“Only until I return. And why not?” Warren said, though he took a long swig of brandy as if to fortify himself for the fight. “It isn’t as if she hates you.”
“No, indeed,” Edwin said sarcastically. “She only challenges my every remark, ignores any advice I offer, and tweaks my nose incessantly. The last time I saw her, she called me the Blakeborough Bear and said I belonged in the Tower of London menagerie where ordinary people could be spared my growls. ”
Warren burst into laughter. When Edwin lifted an eyebrow at him, Warren’s laugh petered out into a cough. “Er, sorry, old boy. But you have to admit that’s amusing.”
“Not nearly as amusing as it will be to watch you try to talk her into this,” Edwin drawled as he settled back in his chair. “She’s not going to agree.”
“Don’t be too sure. You mustn’t take her pokes at you as anything more than her usual mischief-making. You let her exaggerations get under your skin, which only tempts her to tease you more. You should just ignore her when she starts plaguing you.”
Ignore Clarissa? Impossible. He’d spent half his life trying unsuccessfully to unwrap the mystery that was Lady Clarissa Lindsey. Her barbed wit fired his temper, her provocative smile inflamed him, and her shadowed eyes haunted his sleep. He could no more ignore her than he could ignore a rainbowed sunset . . . or a savage storm.
For three months now, she’d been isolated at Warren’s estate, Hatton Hall, and Edwin had felt every second of her absence. That was why the very notion of spending time with her sent his blood pumping.
Not with anticipation. Certainly not. Couldn’t be.
“What do you say, old boy?” Warren held Edwin’s gaze. “I need you. She needs you.”
Edwin ignored the leap in his pulse. Clarissa didn’t need anyone, least of all him. Thanks to the fortune left to her by her late father, the Earl of Margrave, she didn’t have to marry for love or anything else. She’d reportedly refused dozens of marriage proposals since her debut seven years ago.
But it wasn’t her fortune that had men falling all over themselves trying to catch her eye. It was her quick wit. Her effervescent personality. Her astonishing beauty. She was the fair-haired, green-eyed, porcelain-skinned darling of society, and she almost certainly knew it.
Which was why he rather enjoyed the idea of watching Warren attempt to convince her that she should go about town with a gruff curmudgeon like himself. “Assuming that she and I both agree to this insanity—how long would I have her on my hands?”
“It shouldn’t be more than a few weeks,” Warren said. “However long it takes me to deal with her brother in Portugal. I can’t leave Niall stranded on the Continent with all the unrest there right now.”
“I assume she knows that’s the reason for your trip.”
“Actually, no. She doesn’t yet even know about his letter, which was waiting for me when we arrived from Shropshire for the Season. I wanted to be sure you would agree to keep an eye on her before I told her. But once she learns that this involves Niall, she’ll want me to go after him, and she’ll realize I won’t do that unless I’m sure she’s safe.”
“Safe from this Durand fellow.” The reason for this charade Warren was proposing.
Warren’s jaw hardened. “Count Geraud Durand, yes.”
Settling back into his chair, Edwin drummed his fingers on his thigh. “If I’m to do this, you’d better tell me everything you know about this Frenchman.”
“He’s the French ambassador’s first secretary. And because the ambassador had to return to France right after Christmas, Durand is now running the embassy as the charge d’affaires. The position gives him a great deal of power.”
“And what the devil does he want with Clarissa?”
“A wife. He asked her to marry him in Bath some months ago.”
That stunned Edwin. Men in the field of diplomacy generally preferred wives who were not inclined to speak their minds.
“She turned him down,” Warren went on. “That’s why we had to return to London. Unfortunately, he followed us here. He seemed to have made it his mission to gain her no matter what. He was at every public event we attended after our return from Bath. Twice, he tried to accost her on the street.”
His lips thinned into a grim line. “The bastard frightened her enough that she started avoiding going out in public, and you know that’s not like her. So after we spent Christmas at your brother-in-law’s, I whisked her and her mother off to Shropshire where I knew he dared not follow, since he had to serve as charge d’affaires here. I’d hoped our absence would give his ardor time to cool.”
“And has it?”
“I don’t know. We’ve only just returned, so I’ve not had time to assess the situation. But I’m not taking any chances. She has to be protected while I’m trying to sort out her brother’s situation. He can’t continue abroad like this indefinitely. And I can’t continue to manage my properties and his, even with Clarissa’s help.”
Edwin snorted. “Clarissa helps?”
“There’s more to her than you realize.”
Ah, but Edwin did realize it. Granted, he wouldn’t have expected her to have any skill at estate management, but despite her outrageous manner, he sometimes glimpsed a seriousness in her that reminded him of his own.
Or perhaps she just had dyspepsia. Hard to know with Clarissa. She was entirely unpredictable. Which was why she always threw him out of sorts.
Warren waved over a servant and ordered another brandy. “Honestly, accompanying her won’t be as trying as you think. Don’t you need to go out into society this season anyway? Aren’t you bent on marrying?”
“Yes.” Well, he was bent on siring an heir, anyway, which required wedding someone. Though God only knew who that might be.
“You see? It’s perfect. You have to go on the marriage mart. Clarissa wants to enjoy the season, and I want her to find a husband. It’s an ideal situation.”
“If you say so.” How he could successfully court anyone with Clarissa hanging about was anyone’s guess, but he supposed it might improve his stern reputation if he had a beautiful woman on his arm at the usual balls. Assuming she would even agree to take his arm. That was by no means certain with Clarissa.
Warren eyed him closely. “You were still recovering from the loss of Jane last season, so this will be your first real attempt to secure a wife since Jane jilted you. Do you have any particular lady in mind?”
“No. I know what I want. But God only knows if I can find a who to go with it.”
“And what exactly are your requirements for a wife? Other than that she be of breeding age, I suppose.”
“I would prefer a woman who’s responsible and uncomplicated. One who’s quiet and sensible.”
“In other words, someone you can keep under your thumb. The way your father kept your mother under his thumb.”
A swell of painful memories made acid burn his throat. “Father didn’t keep her under his thumb; he ignored her. I will never do that to my wife.”
“You will if she’s as dull as what you describe.” Warren leaned back in his chair. “When I get around to choosing a wife, I want a lively wench who will keep me well entertained.” He winked. “If you know what I mean.”
Edwin rolled his eyes. “Remind me again why we asked you to join St. George’s? You’re as bad as the men we’re guarding our women against.”
“Ah, but I don’t prey on innocents. Any woman who lands in my bed jumped there of her own accord. And I dare say that’s true of any number of fellows here.”
It probably was. Even Edwin had taken a mistress in his twenties when his loneliness had grown too acute to endure. That hadn’t, however, been a very satisfying experience. Knowing that a woman was with you only for your rank and money was somehow more lonely than not having a woman with you at all.
Although with his sister Yvette now married and out of the house, he’d started to feel the disadvantages of a solitary way of life. So once more he’d be looking for a wife, always a singularly awkward experience.
Especially since he didn’t know how to please a woman. Or even how to talk civilly to one. He couldn’t spin a clever yarn, or hide an opinion beneath a facile compliment. Sadly, most women seemed to prefer facile compliments to blunt truths. Hence, his difficulty finding a suitable wife. “When will you broach this with Clarissa?”
He looked at his pocket watch. “At dinner, in about half an hour. I was hoping you’d come.”
“Now?”
“Why not? Might as well get it over with, eh? And I am leaving for Portugal in the morning.”
Devil take it. Edwin would have liked more time to prepare. He was not the spontaneous sort. “Planning to have us join forces against her, are you?”
“That wasn’t my intention initially, no.” Warren gulped some brandy. “When we left Hatton Hall for London, I’d hoped that by now Yvette and Jeremy would have returned from America. And you know that Yvette can talk Clarissa into just about anything.”
Edwin smiled. His sister could talk anyone into just about anything, even him.
“But I gather they’re still abroad,” Warren continued.
“It may be a few more weeks before they return. Sorry.”
“Well, it can’t be helped. At least my aunt will be there to help persuade her.”
Edwin suppressed a snort. Lady Margrave, Clarissa’s mother, was a flighty female who rarely offered sound advice, so Clarissa rarely heeded her. He doubted that this time would be any different.
Warren rose. “I’m truly sorry that I have to run off. So, are you coming or not?” The casual words were belied by his tight expression.
They both knew that Edwin hadn’t yet agreed to the plan. And why not? Because the thought of spending weeks in Clarissa’s company put him on edge as nothing else could.
But it didn’t matter. Warren was his friend, and wouldn’t hesitate to help if the shoe was on the other foot. So neither would Edwin.
He stood. “I’m coming.”

* * *

Clarissa’s mother turned to her in a panic. “I cannot believe your cousin did this! Warren knows better than to invite a man for dinner with no warning. What was he thinking?”
Clarissa raised an eyebrow at her mother’s reflection in the bedchamber’s looking glass. “He was thinking that it’s just Edwin, whom we’ve known for ages. And who comes regularly to dine.”
“I don’t know if pigeon pie is quite suitable for guests,” Mama said as if Clarissa hadn’t spoken. “Oh, and Madeira! Edwin loves his Madeira, you know, and we are fresh out!”
“Mama—”
“And the pickled onions were too sour the last time we ate them. I was hoping to use them up tonight, but if Edwin is coming—”
“Mama, calm down! It’s not as if we’re expecting the Tsar of Russia, you know.” She smiled into the mirror. “Although Edwin would make a fine tsar. All he’d have to do is be his usual autocratic and dictatorial self.”
Thankfully that observation broke her mother out of her fretting. “And he would look quite the part, too, wouldn’t he? All that dark hair and that chiseled jaw.”
And broad shoulders and regal bearing and slate-gray eyes as coldly beautiful as a Russian night spangled with stars.
Clarissa scowled at herself. She must be addled to be thinking of Edwin like that. Though he was sinfully handsome. In a sort of stand-offish way.
“Why, I can almost imagine him in an ermine cape and one of those tall, furry hats,” Mama said.
Clarissa laughed. “Edwin would only wear such a pretentious thing to a coronation, and then only because he had to.”
His manner of dress was always correct, but terribly sober.
Unlike hers. She examined her gown in the mirror and smiled. Edwin would probably look sternly upon the confection of lace and lavender bows. But she would never change her gown for him. Let him give her one of his ruthlessly critical glances; she would not be cowed by them.
Indeed, it was merely force of habit that had her pinching her cheeks until they glowed nicely pink. It was not because she wanted to look pretty for Edwin. No, indeed.
“You know, my girl,” Mama said, “if you were a bit nicer to that man, you could probably have him wrapped about your finger in a matter of weeks.”
“Oh, I doubt that. Edwin is far too inflexible to be wrapped about anything. More’s the pity.” Clarissa would dearly love to see the woman who could manage that.
But it wouldn’t be her. Edwin, of all people, would never accept her as she was, especially once he knew the full extent of her youthful mistakes. And she wasn’t bending to anyone’s demands of what a wife should be—not his, not Mama’s, not Warren’s. She’d allowed a man to bully her once, and it had shattered her life.
Never again.
Pasting a brilliant smile to her lips, she whirled to face her mother. “Shall we go down?”
“Not yet, my angel. The servant said the gentlemen are already here. So we should keep them waiting. You must never let a man be too sure of you.”
“It’s Edwin, Mama,” she said tightly. “He’s sure of everything and everyone, no matter what I do.” She offered her arm to her mother with her usual coaxing smile. “Come now, I know you’re positively dying for a glass of wine. I certainly am.”
“Oh, all right.” Leaning on Clarissa’s arm, Mama let herself be led to the door. “But you must promise to give him a compliment first thing. Men like that.”
“Right,” Clarissa said noncommittally.
“And don’t contradict him all the time. Men despise fractious women.”
“Mm-hmm.”
“And do not spout your witticisms incessantly. It’s very mannish. Not to mention . . .”
As they made their slow way down the stairs, Clarissa let her mother drone on, only half-listening to the usual recitation of little tricks designed to hook a man and reel him in. Those might have enabled her mere cit of a mother to snag an earl, but they smacked of deception to Clarissa.
If a man couldn’t like her as she was, what was the point? Clarissa could barely hide her true opinions from Mama. How was she to do it with a husband?
Not that she ever intended to have a husband. At the very thought of taking a man into her bed, her hands grew clammy and her throat closed up.
No. Marriage was not for her.
“. . . and do be sure to save the biggest slice of cake for him,” Mama was saying as they reached the bottom of the stairs.
“Nonsense. I’m not saving anything for Edwin.”
“That’s only fair,” drawled Edwin from somewhere in the shadows to the right of the staircase. “I’m not saving anything for you, either.”
Striving to hide her surprise, she halted as he came into the light.
“Edwin!” Mama cried. “My dear boy!” She held out her hand.
Dutifully, he came forward to take it. “You’re looking well, Lady Margrave,” he murmured as he bent to brush a kiss over Mama’s cheek.
“You’re looking rather fine yourself,” Mama chirped as she drew back to survey him.
And Lord, he was, in his tailcoat of dark blue wool and his waistcoat and trousers of plain white poplin. Even his cravat was simply tied, which only accentuated the masculine lines of his jaw and sharp planes of his features, so starkly handsome.
How had he managed to grow only more attractive in a mere three months? And why on earth was she gawking at him? This was Edwin, for pity’s sake. It would swell his head even more if he knew what she was thinking.
Instead, she teased him. “Don’t tell me—you were so impatient for us to come down that you’ve been pacing the foyer in anticipation.”
The idea was ludicrous, of course. Impatient wasn’t even in Edwin’s vocabulary. If ever a man believed that slow and steady won the race, it was him.
And he clearly recognized the irony, for he flashed her one of his rare smiles. “Actually, I was fetching this from the library. Warren told me he was done with it.” His eyes gleamed in the lamplight as he held out a book. “Of course, if you wish to read it yourself . . .”
“Doubtful,” she said. “If it’s a book you loaned him, then it’s deadly dull.”
“Clarissa,” Mama chided beneath her breath.
But Edwin merely laughed, as she’d hoped he would. She took great pride in the fact that she could sometimes make him laugh. No other woman seemed able to. No other woman dared try.
“Well, it is about mechanical engineering, which I would imagine isn’t your favorite subject,” he said. “However did you guess?”
“Because I know you so well, Lord Blakeborough.”
He sobered, his gaze turning oddly intense even for him. “Do you? I’m not so sure.”
The words hung in the air a moment in frozen silence before that was shattered by her cousin’s approach.
“I found another book you might enjoy, old boy,” Warren said as he bent to kiss first his aunt, then Clarissa. “It’s about automatons.”
As Warren handed him the book, keen interest leapt in Edwin’s eyes. “I haven’t read this title. Thank you. I’ll get it back to you as soon as I’m done.”
“No hurry.” Warren shot Clarissa a veiled glance. “As you well know, I won’t need it anytime soon.”
Whatever was that about?
Before she could ponder it, Warren offered Mama his arm. “Come, Aunt, let’s get you off your feet while we have our wine before dinner.”
“Thank you, my lad,” she cooed and let him lead her to the breakfast room. “That is ever so thoughtful of you! But then you always were a dear. Why, I remember when . . .”
As Mama prattled on, Edwin was left to come behind with Clarissa. “So,” he murmured, “exactly what were you refusing to save for me?”
It took her a moment to remember that he’d overheard her earlier. “The biggest slice of cake.”
“I don’t like cake.”
“I know. That’s why I’m not wasting it on you. You won’t appreciate it, and you’d probably eat it just to be polite.”
He slanted a serious glance at her. “Perhaps I’d give it to you, instead.”
“I doubt that, but we’ll never know, shall we?” she said lightly. “I’m saving it for myself, regardless.”
“So I heard.”
“Because you were eavesdropping.” Mischief seized her. “How rude of you.”
They passed into the breakfast room, and he shrugged. “If you don’t want people hearing your pronouncements, you shouldn’t talk as loud as a dockworker.”
Mama paused while settling onto the settee. “A dockworker! For shame, Edwin—what a thing to say to a lady! Have you no pretty compliments to offer?”
When he stood blatantly unrepentant, Clarissa said, “If Edwin knew how to compliment ladies, Mama, he would be too popular in society to settle for having dinner with the mere likes of us.”
“There’s no settling involved, I assure you,” he said irritably.
She was still congratulating herself on getting beneath his cool reserve again when Warren stepped in. “Play nice now, cousin. We need him.”
“For what?” Clarissa asked.
Instead of answering, her guardian gestured to the settee. “You’d better sit down. I’ve got something to tell you and your mother.”

REVIEW

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

What a fun read that starts off with a bang! The Lie and the Lady by Kate Noble is the second book in her “Winner Takes All” series. I will admit I did not read the first book named “The Game and the Governess” and I did feel like I missed the back story of the main characters. That being said, Kate Noble was very quick to revisit what had happened in the first story, so it didn’t take away from enjoying this book.. I’m just the kind of reader who likes to know all the author offers in a series.

Countess Letitia is widowed and soon finds that her funds are running low, and once again she will have to marry. After “The Lie” that has not only ruined her, and followed her by means of vicious rumours , whispers and dirty looks , she has found herself travelling about to escape it. She meets Sir Barty on her travels and while he is an older nobleman that suffers from gout (and is somewhat of a bore and by no means a perfect match), he is kind and wealthy and can offer her a decent life.

Little does she know that her world is about to be turned upside down.

John Turner, is the man the created “The Lie” and one that truely loves his Countess Letty. After realizing that they are not meant to be, he returns home. This home just so happens to be the same town that Sir Barty is bringing his fiance home to. It is not long before they cross paths and that once again,”The Lie” comes to haunt and plague them. Before all of this however, a number of secondary characters are involved that add depth, humour and layers of “How are they going to get out of this this time?” or “No .. don’t do that!” John and Letty have many hurtles to jump before they can make a go of things, but first they need to realize if personal title, wealth, and lies will pave the path they are to travel. It sure is fun reading how they go about figuring it all out.

This is a solid regency historical romance. Kate Nobles has a talent of writing likable characters, even when they shouldn’t be likable. I will most assuredly be adding her to my “go to” authors list and will be going back to read the first book of this series. I am sure knowing what has already happened in this book will add some smiles when experiencing the first.

I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series and I am hoping the main characters are who I think they are! Highly recommend!

MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY READING! 🙂

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 27, 2015

Heir to a lairdship, Kinnon Macrory is driven to prove his worth by fighting the English on the battlefields of France. His dreams of heroic valor are destroyed by the realities of war—the atrocities visited by fellow soldiers on the very people he is sworn to protect. Three years in a French prison for a crime he did not commit leave Kinnon longing for the one thing of beauty in his war-torn life—a young woman of great kindness and wisdom named Melisende.

Melisende de la Roche struggles to stay one step ahead of soldiers who would imprison her for helping an injured Scotsman wrongly accused of treason. She finds refuge in her uncle’s shop—until a chance encounter sends her fleeing into the unknown once again, haunted by the beguiling friendship with the troubled young Scotsman she is certain she will never see again.

Determined to find the woman of his dreams, Kinnon returns to France, only to discover a trail of clues to Melisende’s whereabouts. Their reunion will open the doors to passion, but half-truths and lies from the past could destroy the one thing they both are willing to fight for—each other.

•••••••••••

REVIEW: THE HIGHLANDER’S FRENCH BRIDE is the fifth installment in Cathy MacRae’s THE HIGHLANDER’S BRIDE historical romance series. This is Scotsman and heir to the Macrory Lairdship Kinnon Macrory, and French woman Melisende de la Roche. Kinnon is Gilda Macrory’s brother-first introduced in The Highlander’s Tempestuous Bride. THE HIGHLANDER’S FRENCH BRIDE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from third person point of view THE HIGHLANDER’S FRENCH BRIDE follows Kinnon Macrory onto the battlefields of France and into the lives of French sisters Melisende and her younger sister Lucienne. For weeks, Kinnon travelled to the sisters’s farm in search of food for himself and his men, but war soon came to the small village, and Melisende found herself trapped in town aiding the wounded and dying while her sister played nursemaid, back home, to an equally wounded Kinnon. When Kinnon is charged with treason and abandoning his post, Melisende and her sister become embroiled with the soldiers only to find themselves on the run with no place to go. Years would pass before Melisende would set eyes on the man with whom she had fallen in love, but not before Lucienne embarks on a journey for herself.

THE HIGHLANDER’S FRENCH BRIDE follows two paths that will intersect years later when Kinnon is reunited with the woman he loves. Upon his release, Kinnon needs time to heal from his debilitating wounds, but is determined to search for Melisende and her sister knowing that one or both could have been captured by the British soldiers. The relationship between Kinnon and Melisende is very slow to build as the majority of the storyline sees the leading characters separate and in different countries. The reader has a front row seat as Kinnon searches for the woman he lost; and Melisende is constantly on the run –one step ahead of the price on her head.

Cathy MacRae has admitted taking liberty with the historical accuracy and honestly I would not have noticed the timeline anomalies. Because the storyline traverses France and Scotland, we get a little bit of the Scottish brogue and the French language of love. Each of Cathy’s storylines features an animal or close pet. The premise is entertaining with a myriad of subplots and twists; the characters are colorful and animated-Lucienne’s personal story is heartbreaking and intense; Melisende and Kinnon’s life experiences add maturity and resolution; the $ex scenes are intimate but mostly implied. The romance and sexual tension between Melisende and Kinnon is sorely lacking due in part to the long separation throughout most of the storyline. I will add that the ‘long separation’ between leading characters is a regular feature of Cathy’s storylines.

REVIEW:

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

One Rogue At A Time by Jade Lee is the second book of her Rakes and Rogues Series. A fun regency romance that follows two leading characters that should absolutely be together despite what the other thinks. Lots of adventure, dashes of humour, lies, and determination are all good words to describe what you will find reading this story.

Bram is labelled as a bastard (of a duke) but lives his life balancing a fine line of gentleman and commoner. He lives outside the boundaries of the ton having chosen to become a mercenary but he is also recognized as a reputable man. He is fully educated in polite society, but has a mentality of glass half empty. He can be apathetic because he really feels like he has nothing to lose in life. What happens when he realizes just one woman can change his way of life.

Bella is also the daughter of a man of nobility. She is adventurous, kind, very smart, caring and determined to right many wrongs . When she loses her mother, she concludes she needs to learn how to be a lady. She has infiltrate the ton but is at a loss of how to go about it. After a run in with Bram and a bit of manipulation, Bella requests that Bram teach her all she needs to know.

Both are born to nobles but are not able to reap any of the benefits that can produce. Bram seems to have accepted this, but Bella wants the world to know she is legit. She is hiding secrets, and must not allow anything to distract her from her goal … BUT she cannot seem to fight this attraction that is developing between her and Bram. For the record .. Bram is struggling as well.

So much more to this story but you have the premise now. Here is what I would like to review. I loved the major TEEHEE moments .. I actually laughed out loud a few times. I loved the slow build of friendship to lovers. I adored Bella as she is the kind of heroine that I love to get to know. I will say I had a bit of a disconnect with Bram. I really really wanted to love him, but he was a “Debbie Downer” for a good chunk of this book so by the time he became redeemable (and he does), I was over it. It was Bella that kept me invested and this book jumped to a 4 star toward the last quarter. I found it a little dry in the beginning, but when the story took off, I was all in!

Secondary characters .. stole many parts of this book! LOVE THAT!

A solid historical romance and yes I would absolutely read more by Jade lee!

HAPPY READING!

excerpt

The second in Jade Lee’s saucy Rakes and Rogues series, One Rogue at a Time, comes out this December! To celebrate, Jade played a quick round of ‘Would You Rather?’ with us and sent an excerpt from the book to share.

Would you rather read a book on an e-reader or in print? I prefer print—easier on my eyes–but print books are heavy and kill trees. Therefore, I say e-reader.

In this excerpt our heroine (nicknamed Bluebell) is angling for our hero to take her to London where she can meet her father for the first time. She’s bargained for speaking lessons, and now she’s bartering for a ride to London. But she isn’t prepared for the price he demands.

“You want me to take you to Oxfordshire and then on to London,” Bram accused. “You want me to dress up this fine carriage and let you appear before your relations like a fine lady. You’ve been planning that from the moment you met me.”
“Ooo, an’ me a simple maid from ’Ull. Wot makes ye think I could muster all that?” She exaggerated her accent such that his back molars ground together in disgust.
“Admit it. That’s what you want.”
She lifted her chin. “And what if I do? You’re free t’ say no.”
“No.”
“There. Fine. Ye’ve said it. But I can pay—”
He grabbed her chin, pulling it—and her—toward him. Part of him thrilled at finally touching her pristine skin. Part of him watched how her eyes widened and the pupils darkened, her mouth slipping open on a gasp. Was she afraid of him? Yes. Obviously. And he tried to care. He tried to tell himself that he didn’t want to punish her for crimes she hadn’t committed. But she was a schemer just like the others, and so he damned her all the same.
“I will take you to London,” he said, his voice low, his breath hot.
She didn’t answer, and he didn’t care.
“But there’s only one payment I’ll take.”
“No,” she whispered. “I’m a lady.”
“Say it all you like, Miss Bluebell, but I know the truth.”
She swallowed, trying to pull herself back, but she was still sitting on the barrel, so she had nowhere to run. She stilled and her eyes narrowed.
“Wot truth? That I want to go to London? That I want proof o’ my father? Or that you’re nothing but a man with ruttin—”
He kissed her. He wasn’t slow, and he wasn’t remotely gentle. And the fact that she was completely untutored in the way of kissing infuriated him even more. She was a lie. She deserved all the pain he could give her. She was…
She was an innocent, and he had to soften. He had to become gentle with her, and so he did. He didn’t want to, contradictory beast that he was. He liked his anger. Stoked it to a hot flame, but not against her.
So he softened. He gentled.
Where before he had simply wrenched her mouth to his, he now petted her chin. And though he had forced his tongue into her, he eased his penetration. He teased her and then pulled back.
“You are a lie,” he said to her panting chest.
“You are a brute,” she answered, anger vibrating out of her.
“Yes, and worse. I’m a bastard.”
“You’re not even ashamed.”
Oh, he was. He was riddled with shame, but he wouldn’t let her see it. She had to know the truth about him before she tried to play her games. “I’ll take you wherever you want to go, Miss Bluebell. But I’ll be taking you as I do it.”
He felt the impact of his words on her body. She shuddered, but she also licked her lips. Part of her wanted him, brute though he was.
“I am a lady.”
“Ladies spread their legs for me all the time.”
“Not me.”
“Then I’ll not take you anywhere.”
He felt her accept the truth of his words. Her body bowed, and her shoulders drooped. But when she spoke, her voice was strong with conviction.
“I don’t need you to take me. I’ve coin eno’. The mail coach goes to Oxfordshire and London.”
“You’ll be prey to every bloke who sees you.”
She finally jerked her chin away from the stroke of his fingers. “’At’s been true since I first started filling out a dress.” And then before he could anticipate her move, before it even registered that he was in danger, she lifted her knee.
How she’d maneuvered it so perfectly, he didn’t know. But one moment he was hard as a rock, still thinking of ways he could make her willing. The next there was a blinding flash of white-hot pain, and he was crumpled onto the ground.
He couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t think. He just knew pain. And one word:
Bravo.

REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

WOW .. that was one fantastic read! 🙂

In Search of Scandal by Susanne Lord is the first book of her historical romance series named London Explorers and it sure did deliver. Susanne is a new author to me, and there is nothing better that finding an author that hits all the marks that I favour in historical romance novels.

Having returned home to England after a disaster that would your know what with anyone’s head, Will Repton certainly is a damaged man. He is a well known adventurer that is being welcomed home as a hero despite the fact that he feels anything but. He is raw in his emotions and pain, dark and broody without being obnoxious and generally a character that one cannot wait to learn about.

Charlotte Baker is a woman who needs to get her family out of scandal by marrying well. She is a light hearted, a welcomed breath of fresh air who has a glass that seems to remain half full all the time. She is kind and sweet but NOT annoyingly so and she knows the minute she meets Will, she has found her soul mate.

Together these two manage to set off on an adventure of truth, denial, healing and ultimately love and trust. Charlotte knows there is something wrong with Will but never in her wildest dreams would she guess what it is that plagues him. Will feels drawn to Charlotte despite his adamant “I don’t want or need a wife, I have things I need to do!”. However he cannot seem to stop looking out for this young lady who he finds captivating.

So much good to say about this book that I could write pages. First off let’s acknowledge that this is Susanne Lord’s debut novel .. WHAT???? NO WAY! I have never encountered a debut novel that was this amazing. There was so much complexity surrounding her characters and story line that I was literally stuck to my e-reader. An engaging build up that delivered when the climax hit. She also managed to take two characters that have my “ummm .. yah .. not my fave” characteristics and make me fall in love with them. My absolute fave part of this book though, was the heart break. What a sad and beautiful story line of Will’s past. OH ME OH MY!

So there you have it. I dare say if you love the genre of historical romance as much as I do, you will love this novel.

HAPPY READING 🙂

excerpt

Charlotte caught her breath and unclenched the grip she had taken upon his hand. “You cannot pretend to like me, Mr. Repton. I just wonder—I have always wondered what I have done to offend you.”
His arm tightened and his lips were right back to hovering over her ear. “Wait…”
More silence. Honestly! She would not stand here and let him trample her heart.
She ripped herself from his arms. “It is fine. I hardly require every man to like me, Mr. Repton. Be assured I am aware of your feelings and you will not have to suffer my attentions anymore.”
She whirled to leave but a steel hand gripped her arm.
“God! Blast it! Now what have I done?” he growled, his blue eyes wintry in the moonlight. “I thought we were getting on. I wouldn’t mind being your friend, as long as you understand that’s where it ends.”
“Wouldn’t mind? I have more friends than I can count, I hardly need—”
He yanked her hard against him. “Then what do you want?”
“I…I will not argue—”
His hands gripped her waist. “What do you want, Charlotte?” He growled. “What do you want me to do?”
Her words died in the face of his rising frustration. What did she want? What had she ever wanted but him? She wanted him still. From the first sight, the first instant. Every day, every hour, she wanted him. In a deep, tender, precious place she could not touch with reason. And all he did was sneer and push her way.
“Why didn’t you ignore me as you normally do?” she asked hollowly. “Why did you talk to me at all tonight?”
He said nothing. He didn’t move. Something furious and wild thundered through her breast. “You don’t belong here!” Her fist clenched, wanting to slap that frozen look off his face. “Say something!” She launched against him, gripping him about his hard neck. “Say anything!”
But his stubborn lips were sealed, and before she could stop herself, she mashed her mouth against them.
Instantly, she regretted it. Their chins knocked, their teeth scraped, and a grunt of surprise sounded from his throat.
Oh God, what was she doing? She didn’t know how to give a kiss and he certainly didn’t want hers. His hands dropped off her and she sobbed sharply against his mouth. Mortified, she crumpled against his neck.
Oh God, oh God, how will I face him?
A hard hand seized her neck and forced her head up. Blue eyes blazed into hers. “Damn it all!”
Warm lips clamped to hers expertly. Shocked, she sank to her heels but his arm tightened and locked her against the hard wall of his body.
His deep groan shook her.
But it was a sound of surrender.

1. Descend from the Highlands to face the aggravation of a London Season;
2. Foist his wild sister off on some gullible English lord;
3. Retreat before the ladies of the scandalized ton can get any ideas.

Determined to see his hellion of a sister wed, Highlander Alexander Waters is willing to face anything—even the English. He just didn’t expect his own rough manners to cause such a riot…or for a blooming English rose to catch his eye.

Gently bred Catherine Middlebrook must find a respectable man to marry or her family will be ruined. She won’t allow herself to be distracted by Highland barbarians…no matter how her body may thrill whenever Alex is near.

Catherine wasn’t part of the plan, but as their battle of wills escalates, Alex comes to realize this “proper” English girl is as wild as the Highlands themselves…and nothing will stop him from having her.

REVIEW:  3.5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

What a great start to a new regency/historical/highlander romance series by Christy English. How to Seduce a Scot is the first book of The Broadswords and Ballrooms series (love the playful title to book and series) and over all I was impressed enough to come back for more.

Catherine Middlebrook is on the marriage market. With hopes of landing a husband that can save her penniless family, she is some what perplexed when she finds herself attracted to her new friend’s brother Alex. Alex would never do however as his is a barbarian Scots who has no decorum or sense of polite English anything within. Growing up proper, Catherine must find a reliable proper Englishman with lots of money.

Alexander Waters is doomed to escort his sister’s coming out and attend all these frilly pretentious balls. Having no desire to find a wife himself, he is surprised to find himself drawn to the very thing he abhors. Alex is rough around the edges and while he is capable of charming polite society when it serves, he must admit this polite little friend of his sister’s has a fire within her that once ignited will burn hot. Now he must convince her to ditch her expectations and realize that a little flame is so much better than a bucket of plain old water.

Ok, so this novel took a little to get into. It was a slow start, but once things got going, it was an engaging read. Catherine and Alex are so different yet both hold some passion within that seems to come out whenever they are close. I love that despite Catherine being courted by Mr Snoozefest (although to be truthful, he is kind .. just boring), Alex still would casually pursue her. Drove me nuts that Catherine pushed Alex away so much though. Honestly, what snagged me in this book was the humour between our main characters. Some of the one liners and playful interactions really was endearing and I absolutely love that. I do wish there was more heat to love scenes and that our highlander was a little more rugged, but that is personal preference and I did enjoy the gentlemen aspect as opposed to the barbarian .. it is .. let’s say … refreshing.

A great historical romance for those looking for a tamer romance, and a sweet story. I will absolutely read the next book in this series!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

TAKE THE QUIZ: What Kind of Historical Romance Heroine Are You?

excerpt “I need no husband,” Mary Elizabeth said. “In spite of my brothers’ scheming and my mother’s insistence, Papa will allow me to hunt and fish on our glen for the rest of my life. There is no need to marry to do that. But you…” Mary Elizabeth’s gaze did not waver, even as she blinked as if to clear her vision. “You shall marry for love.” Catherine found herself smiling then, and the smile was a true one. “There is no such thing as a love match that lasts.” “Of course there is. My parents have it. I think your parents had it, before your father died.” Catherine looked across the parlor to her strident mother, who had only become so after she had managed to crawl out of the chasm of her grief. It was almost as if, without her father present in the world, her mother was afraid of not ever being heard again. “They did,” was all Catherine said. “And we will find it for you.” Mary Elizabeth squeezed her hand.
