Interview

Rhyannon Byrd 3TRC: Hi Rhyannon and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of TAKE ME UNDER, the first book in your new Dangerous Tides series.

Rhyannon: Thanks so much for inviting me to The Reading Café, and many thanks for the congrats!! 🙂

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Rhyannon: I have a wonderful husband who’s a Brit and does all the cooking despite his busy schedule, two great kids who make me laugh every day, and have lived in the UK for the past five years. I love books, music, travel, museums, beaches, sunshine, good food, good friends, Pearl Jam concerts, my iPod, football, scented candles, movies, my Rottie and Beagle, a clean house, and last but not least, spending time with my crazy but awesome family. And I also spend a ton of time sitting at my laptop writing…to the point that I sometimes feel like my eyes are going to fall out of my head…but I still consider myself incredibly lucky to have something that I enjoy so much as a fulltime career.

TRC: You currently reside in England, but previous to that you were a long time resident of the USA. What is the best/worst thing (for you) about living in each country and why? What do you miss most about living in the USA?

Rhyannon: The best thing about living in the UK would be all the wonderful places we get to visit. The worst thing is driving on the roads here, which I hate. But I did finally get my British driving license this past March, so I’m forcing myself to get out in my Mini and make the best of it.

The best thing about living in the USA was the shopping…and the Mexican food! OMG, do I miss the Mexican food! The worst was the freaking snakes that used to come onto our property when we lived in Florida. I. HATE. SNAKES. Seriously. With a passion. So it’s lovely not to have to worry about them anymore.
I think the thing I miss most about living in the States is the weather. I spent most of my life in either California or Florida and desperately miss those hot sunny days at the beach!

Take me UnderTRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of TAKE ME UNDER?

Rhyannon: TAKE ME UNDER is the first book in my new contemporary erotic Dangerous Tides series with Berkley Heat. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a new erotic romance out and I’m so excited to finally be writing them again! TAKE ME UNDER is a hot, sexy, emotional story about a shy divorcee named Reese who moves to Florida in the hopes of escaping a psychotic stalker. When she discovers that her mom has rented her a beach house owned by the town’s sexy bad boy sheriff, Ben Hudson, she’s shocked. But what’s even more surprising is when Ben makes it clear that he’s interested in being a hell of a lot more than her landlord. And when danger follows her to the sleepy little beach town, Ben quickly claims the role of Reese’s personal bodyguard, determined to do whatever it takes to protect her. Ben is definitely one of my all-time favorite heroes and I can’t wait to hear what readers think of him! 🙂

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Rhyannon: At the moment there are 3 books and a novella planned for the series. They’ll each have a standalone storyline, so it’s really the different characters that tie the series together. The Hudson brothers—Ben, Alex and Mike—are the heroes in the three full-length novels. Scott Ryder, the hero in Make Me Yours, is one of Ben’s deputies. Make Me Yours is a novella that falls between the first and second books in the series, and the story will be included in the WICKED AND DANGEROUS anthology that’s coming out in October with the awesome Shayla Black.

TRC: How much research (logistical, background etc) was involved in the writing of this series?

Rhyannon: I had to research some of the aspects of Ben’s career, but in regards to the setting it helped that I’ve spent a lot of time in Florida. We would vacation on the Gulf every July, so I chose that type of location because it was one that I felt comfortable with and hoped I would be able to portray in a believable manner.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the major characters in this particular storyline, which actors or models would represent your ideal image?

Rhyannon Byrd imagesRhyannon: This was such an easy question to answer because I had included images in the cover art file I put together for Berkley’s art department. I sent them a gorgeous photo of Gerard Butler for Ben, and one of the adorable Anna Friel for Reese.

TRC: Do your storyline characters speak to you and tell you the direction of the story or do you direct the characters?

Rhyannon: I start out directing…but they almost always take control by the end. I’ve learned not to argue with them. 😉

TRC: KEEP ME CLOSER is the second storyline, slated for release in June 2014. Would you please tell us who are your leading characters?

Rhyannon: Alex Hudson, Ben’s brother, is the hero in book 2, and Brit Cramer, Ben’s friend, is the heroine. When putting the cover art file together for Keep Me Closer, I chose several rugged images of Michael Fassbender for Alex, and two photos of the beautiful Evan Rachel Wood for Brit. Alex and Brit are going to be such an explosive couple, and the cover for their book is my absolute favorite. I can’t wait to share it with you guys!

And here’s an early peek at the back cover copy:

Five years after the end of his marriage and his career as a detective, Alex Hudson wears a permanent suit of armor to keep the world at bay. Now a P.I. in South Florida, he believes that he’s better off free of romantic complications—even if a certain beautiful redhead makes him sweat with little more than a look. But he’s determined to steer clear of women and the trouble they bring. Until trouble comes uninvited…

Renowned therapist Brit Cramer has seen her fair share of violence and knows how to handle it. But when a former patient targets Brit as his feminine “ideal,” she finds help in the last place she ever expected—the tall, dark, outrageously sexy Alex Hudson, who saves her from a violent attack. Brit’s been powerfully attracted to Alex from the moment they first met several years ago, but she knew better than to do more than enjoy the view…
The initial uncertainty they both feel shatters in the face of a searing, absolute desire, but their time is running out as they find themselves caught in the sights of a madman who will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Before they know it, they’re fighting not only for their lives, but the possibility that they may have both found exactly what they’ve always wanted and needed…in each other.

TRC: Many authors face challenges in writing or getting their books to publication. What are some of the difficulties you have faced in your writing career?

Rhyannon: I think the hardest part is just finding people that you click with and who are eager to champion your work, because the more people you have fighting for your projects—from editors and agents to the publisher’s marketing department—the better your chances of finding success.

TRC: How do you handle (the combination of) the pressure and stress of a deadline and, family life at home?

Rhyannon: I don’t!! I become a raving lunatic when deadline approaches. Wish I could say that wasn’t the case, but it’s true. Luckily my family is great at handling me in crisis mode and they really see me through to the end. Without their support I would probably just curl up in a corner in the fetal position and pull a blanket over my head. But they bring me tea and food, encourage me to keep going, and force me to take breaks every now and then by dragging me outside and making me get some fresh air.

TRC: 😉

TRC: If you had a chance to become a contestant on a reality television show, which program would you like to be a participant and why?

Rhyannon: I would have to choose Britain’s Got Talent just so that I could meet David Walliams because I think he’s such an incredibly awesome guy. And I love the way he gives Simon Cowell such a hard time! The only problem is that I don’t actually have a talent that I could perform, so it would probably be a bit awkward. 😉

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Rhyannon:

1: I would love to travel and explore a lot of the places that I’ve always wanted to visit but have never been to, like Italy, Greece, and the south of France.
2: I would love to learn to speak Italian because it’s such a beautiful language.
3: I would love to finally get in shape and be able to go for a run without feeling like it’ll kill me. LOL
4: I would love to learn to play the piano. I would probably play it badly, but at least I would know how to play it! 😉
5: And when it comes to writing, I would love to see my books reaching more readers and hopefully one day even making a bestseller’s list. That would be so lovely!

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Wicked and DangerousRhyannon: I’m currently working on the copyedits for Make Me Yours, which will be in the WICKED AND DANGEROUS anthology that’s coming out in October. I’m also working on KEEP ME CLOSER, as well as some exciting self-published projects that will be coming out this summer. 🙂

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Rhyannon: Just a truly heartfelt THANK YOU to my readers for spending their hard-earned money on my books and making it possible for me to do something I love so much for a career. Without them, none of this would be possible and I am truly grateful for each and every one of them!!!!

Ben Hudson had a thing for shy, sexy Reese Monroe from the moment he first saw her three years ago. Back then, she was married and living in Boston—two very good reasons for the Miami detective with a bad boy reputation to stay away.

But that was then…

Now Reese is divorced and moving to Florida, where her mother has rented her a small beach house—one that happens to be owned by Ben. Living right next door, he can’t get Reese’s soft curves out of his mind. He’s waited three long years to touch her in all the ways he’s been dreaming about, and this time he won’t let anything get in his way.

For Reese, Ben’s sudden advances are thrilling, but leave her stunned. With her limited experience in the bedroom, she never expects a man with such a wicked reputation to go after her. She knows she should be on guard, but he’s a temptation she can’t resist. And when trouble follows her down from Boston, threatening her life, Ben may be the only one who can help her.

THE SWORD DANCER (Tang Dynasty #4) by Jeannie Lin

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release May 21, 2013

The Thief Who Stole His Heart

Sword dancer Li Feng is used to living life on the edge of the law—a woman alone in the dangerous world of the Tang Dynasty has only her whirlwind reflexes to trust. She will discover the truth about her past, even if that means outwitting the most feared thief-catcher of them all…

Relentless, handsome and determined, Han sees life—and love—as black and white. Until he finally captures the spirited, courageous Li Feng, who makes him question everything he thought he knew about right and wrong. Soon he’s faced with an impossible choice: betray the elusive sword dancer he is learning to love, or trust his long-disregarded heart and follow her to dangerous, tempting rebellion..

•••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE SWORD DANCER is the latest release in Jeannie Lin’s series of historical romance/adventure novels set in the Tang Dynasty of China. I contacted Jeannie before reading the novel to ensure that I would not be confused or lost as the book is labeled number four, but she reassured me that each storyline is a stand-alone and the only connection is the historical period of the Tang Dynasty.

The premise focuses on sword dancer Li Feng avenging the loss of her family and Hao Han, a thief-collector whose latest target is Li Feng and the troupe of performers and dancers with whom she is travelling. As one of the most regaled thief-collectors it is Han’s duty to hunt those held responsible for crimes against the government and the people, but his latest target slowly chips away at the cold façade and heart of a man whose life revolves around crime and punishment.

The storyline follows Han and Li Feng as they play a game of cat and mouse, all the while Li Feng searching for the man/men responsible for destroying her family and her childhood. While Han wants the man brought to justice, Li Feng wants revenge and retribution. Not only does Li Feng run for her life, but for her heart as well, as she begins to fall for the man ordered to bring her in.

Throughout the story the couple will discover that the search for those responsible goes much deeper than they first suspect. The storyline is awash in political intrigue and mystery, death and loss, action and adventure, suspense, espionage and vigilante justice. And we cannot forget about the developing relationship between Han and Li Feng. There is a mutual attraction between the pair: what started out as hunter and the hunted will become one of friendship out of necessity; and lovers over time.

The world building is smooth as well as the intricate personal and cultural details of the historical Tang Dynasty. Character development is fluid as we learn the truth behind Li Feng’s life on the run, her family history and the mysterious jade pendant she holds close to her heart. Li Feng is a strong, independent woman who strives for the ultimate act of revenge. Hao Han’s decision to search for those who break the law and his decision to keep family and business separate pushes him forward but he will eventually have to face the reality that the woman he seeks to bring in is the woman who stole his heart. As a thief-catcher, he has caught the ultimate law-breaker or has the law-breaker caught Hao Han? There is a fine line between right and wrong, and only retribution for those who have loved and lost.

Jeannie Lin pulls the reader into an exotic world of sword dancers, Asian culture and the fight for political and financial control of one of the world’s precious minerals. From the street vendors and entertainers to the political back rooms where deals are made and broken, THE SWORD DANCER is a fascinating and colorful storyline with a likeable couple that I would definitely like to hear more about.

We are pleased to welcome author Jeannie Lin to The Reading Cafe. You can find Jeannie at: Website / Blog / Facebook Twitter / Pinterest

Jeannie LinTRC: Hi Jeannie and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations of the release of THE SWORD DANCER, the latest release in your historical romance series of the Tang Dynasty.

Jeannie: Hello! Thank you and thank you for having me. It always is so exciting to see a book you’ve worked on actually “hit the shelves”.

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Jeannie: I’m a twin mom and a techie by profession. I’m also a former science teacher. I sneak in writing way, way early in the morning or late, late at night. Or for an hour or two during the day in between the day job.

TRC: How much influence does your own cultural background have on the storylines and premises of your novels?

Jeannie: When I was growing up, my grandmother would stay up all night knitting and watching Hong Kong TVB serials (which she also would bootleg to share with family members. I know that this is bad now and every time someone pirates my books, I feel the fat thumb of karmic retribution pressing down on me.) So I pretty much grew up watching these big costume dramas and martial arts adventures, my favorite being the ones based on the stories of mega bestselling author Jin Yong (aka Louis Cha) which were steeped in history, but interwoven with his own fantastic storytelling. I was surprised that my parents also knew about these stories. And they would talk about things that happened in the written version and not the movies. It turns out that my mother and father had also grown up with these same stories. When I played make-believe with my cousins, these were the stories we acted out. (Yes, we fought with plastic swords) This is what fed my imagination.

The Sword DancerTRC: THE SWORD DANCER is the first storyline in your new series of The Tang Dynasty. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Jeannie: For The Sword Dancer, I was initially inspired by a famous poem by Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu, an excerpt of which opens the book. The poem talks nostalgically about the golden era gone by. I envisioned an action/adventure tale that had all the drama and romance of the stories I loved. It would be set at the tail end of the Tang Dynasty, during the last bright spot before the fall during the rule of Emperor Xuanzong (846 – 859) During troubled times, often times bandits were romanticized, so in this story the men who enforced the law–magistrates, constables, thief-catchers–would be juxtaposed against outlaws and rebels who are pursuing their own form of justice.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for The Sword Dancer series? And will Han and Li Feng be the principle characters in the series?

Jeannie: I plan for three full length novels and several supporting novellas. The other books will feature other primary characters, but Han and Li Feng will appear again as supporting members. And…if all goes as planned…I do have a novella planned for Han and Li Feng as I was always certain their adventures would not come to an end just because they’d found one another.

TRC: If you could virtually cast The Sword Dancer, which actors or models would best represent Han and Li Feng?

Jeannie: That’s kind of tough–the picture I have in my head is not quite like anyone existing. But I was thinking of a young Michael Miu for Han. I have a crush on him from my younger days and his face can look either rugged or refined. Plus he has a great jawline…I have a weakness for those. For Li Feng, I think someone like actress Maggie Q (Nikita) would fit best. Maggie Q isn’t Chinese, so that gives her a look that’s not traditionally beautiful by Chinese standards which fits for Li Feng (though of course Maggie Q is gorgeous). Also her body type is slim and athletic and I always think of Li Feng in terms of how she moves.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content, historical accuracy and believability?

Jeannie: Readers have a vision in their head that they believe to be accurate and I think that when they know very little about a period or setting, the few details they do know become more prevalent and exaggerated. Readers often challenge my stories on the basis of the belief that Chinese women in past times should be subservient or have bound feet (which wasn’t until after the Tang Dynasty and was also not for all ethnicities). All I can do as a writer is try to immerse the reader into the story so they WANT to believe my world is true.

Lotus PalaceTRC: The Lotus Palace is the September 2013 release in another new Tang Dynasty series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Jeannie: I’m quite excited about this series. The stories all revolve around mysteries set in the Pingkang li, also known as the North Hamlet, which was the pleasure quarter in the Tang Dynasty capital of Changan. The Pingkang li was the place where bureaucrats and scholars would mingle with talented courtesans. There was a very unique culture of literature and poetry that surrounded the quarter, but the records of it also spoke of untold dangers and deception.

TRC: Do you have plans to connect or overlap any of the Tang Dynasty series?

Jeannie: At this time, there’s no plan to intersect. The two series have very different themes and approaches, one being steeped in adventure and folklore while the other being concentrated around intrigue and mystery. The previous duet I wrote — Butterfly Swords + The Dragon and the Pearl –take place nearly a hundred years earlier.

TRC: What challenges (historical, logistical, research etc) did you face writing your novels of the Tang Dynasty?

Jeannie: I think the hardest thing has been negotiating expectations between two different genres – Asian martial arts fiction and historical romance. Readers of historical romance expect certain tropes concerning the happily ever after ending and how villains should be punished and such. It’s a constant negotiation in my head of how to make the story accessible and emotionally engaging to as many readers as possible while still retaining the core themes that I want to present.

TRC: Do you believe your portrayal of the era is accurate or do you take professional liberty with the time period?

Jeannie: The Tang Dynasty my stories are set in are most certainly “Jeannie Lin’s Tang Dynasty”. But the Venice that Shakespeare wrote in was “Shakespeare’s Venice.” Every author or artist’s recreation is inevitably unique in its interpretation–otherwise what is the purpose of putting your hands onto something? I believe this is true for historians as well — it’s a well-known practice in Chinese history, for instance, that different dynasties would commission the rewriting of the historical record. The new versions were always colored by who was in power, which philosophies and religions were dominant, and so on and so forth.

With that in mind, I use historical detail to help me elevate my story, but for me, it’s about telling an engaging story set in a historical period. It’s important for me that the story had to take place in the Tang Dynasty based on certain setting details, but it’s not my goal to “accurately” recreate the dynasty.

TRC: As an author of Chinese historical fiction, have you ever had the occasion to visit the places about which you write?

Jeannie: I’ve made one trip to China with my family, but this was actually way before I knew I’d be a writer. And China is so vast! We didn’t visit Xian (modern day Changan) where The Lotus Palace is set or Fujian province where The Sword Dancer is set. I wanted to make another trip to China to do research, but then the twins came and that plan had to be put on hold until *checks calendar* when they go to college? LOL

TRC: How thoroughly do you plan out your characters and storyline premises before you begin the first draft?

Jeannie: I usually do a loose outline, laying out each chapter. On top of that, I actually do what I call “playing the movie” in my head. I play out the scenes over and over, cutting the ones that don’t work. Unfortunately, this takes a long time for me to cull out what works and what doesn’t. Ideally I want to do this over a year, but I don’t usually have that much time.

TRC: Would you please tell us how you handle the stress and anxiety of writing deadlines and family life?

Jeannie: I think my writing buddies keep me sane. I have critique partners that I meet with in person or online and I must admit our conversations are not 100% about writing, but it helps to not feel so isolated and to have friends who can “talk you off the ledge” so to speak. The rest is just hanging on tooth and nail and hoping for the best.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas with other authors, friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas and why?

Jeannie: I have a core group of trusted crit partners. We’ve just spent a long time reading for each other and I trust their opinions.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about you?

Jeannie: Hmm…I don’t know. People might assume I’m very serious because I get very philosophical and academic sometimes when I blog, but I’m actually quite funny. Really.

TRC: What are the 5 things you would like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Jeannie: Oh my. I used to have interesting things here, but now my goals are all boring like “buy a new house” and “start a college fund…make that two”.
Let me stick to writerly things:

1. Publish a series outside of historical romance
2. Start a writing based scholarship
3. Write the on-again-off-again historical fiction project I’ve been planning with my Little Sis
4. Mentor high school students in a writing program (I’ve been dreaming about this one forever, but can’t seem to find the time to start)
5. Finally take that research trip to China

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Jeanine: I’m currently working on the sequel to The Lotus Palace. There’s murder and ancient Chinese forensics and probably the most unlikely romance I’ve ever tried to tackle.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Jeannie: No, this has been a great bunch of questions. I had a lot of fun answering them.

Obsession Blog Tour – Catching Up With Jennifer L. Armentrout

Jennifer Armentrout
The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome back Jennifer L. Armentrout. A few days ago, Jennifer released her newest novel, Obsession.  She is here to discuss Obsession, as well as what else we may have to look forward to in 2013

Before we start the interview, let’s refresh your memory about Jennifer.

About The Author Black and Purple

#1 NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY Bestselling author Jennifer lives in Martinsburg, West Virginia. All the rumors you’ve heard about her state aren’t true. When she’s not hard at work writing. she spends her time reading, working out, watching really bad zombie movies, pretending to write, and hanging out with her husband and her Jack Russel Loki.

Her dreams of becoming an author started in algebra class, where she spent most of her time writing short stories….which explains her dismal grades in math. Jennifer writes young adult paranormal, science fiction, fantasy, and contemporary romance. She is published with Spencer Hill Press, Entangled Teen and Brazen, Disney/Hyperion and Harlequin Teen.

She also writes adult and New Adult romance under the name J. Lynn. She is published by Entangled Brazen and HarperCollins.

Now let’s talk to Jennifer!

Interview fuscia:black

Hi Jennifer. Thank you for taking the time to revisit with us at The Reading Cafe to discuss your new release “OBSESSION”, what else you have in store for us 2013.

Obsession May 31 2013
TRC:
OBSESSION is your May 31st release, a spin off (of sorts), from your fantastic LUX series.  Will you please tell us something about the premise of OBSESSION?

Jennifer: Obsession delves into  the world from the Lux series, but the male lead, Hunter, is actually one of greatest enemies to the Luxen, an Arum.  When Hunter is forced by the Department of Defense to protect Serena, a human who knows too much, from the same aliens that he has been bred to kill, the situation gets hot and heavy in more ways than one.

Links to order Obsession: Amazon / Barnes & NobleKobo / Itunes

TRC:  Is OBSESSION a standalone novel or will it be part of a series?

Jennifer: Obsession is a standalone novel.

TRC:  What was behind your decision to create a story about a protagonist who was on the side of the enemies from the LUX series?

Jennifer: There are always two sides to every story, so I thought it would be interesting to look at the world from the Lux series from a different point of view. Also, I thought writing an adult novel featuring an Arum instead of a Luxen would set it apart from my YA series.

TRC: ORIGIN, which is the 4th book (& one novella) in the Lux series, is expected to be released August 27th. When we last saw Katy, you left us hanging desperately. Will Katy and Daemon get back together to fight the enemy?

Jennifer: That would be too spoilery!   You will just  have to find out in Origin.

TRC:  Is ORIGIN the final book in the Lux series, if not how many books do you plan for this series?

Jennifer  There are five books in the Lux series, so there will be one more after Origin.

TRC: When the  Lux series does end, do you have plans to continue with a spin-off series?

Jennifer:  No, I don’t plan to  write a spin-off series because I think the final book will be a good stopping place for the Luxen  world.

TRC: Writing as J. Lynn you released Wait for You last September. What was your reaction to seeing your book make #1 on the NY Times list?

Jennifer:  I really couldn’t believe it.  I  don’t think I can do my reaction justice right now.  I need my Supernatural gifs to express my  emotions about hitting #1.

TRC:  BE WITH ME-the second book in the Wait for You series- is scheduled for release sometime later this year. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Jennifer:  Be With Me  features Jase, Cam’s best friend, and Teresa, Cam’s sister.  I’m not allowed to give you any other  details yet.  But, I can tell you that Cam and Avery make some appearances throughout the book.   As a matter of fact, Cam is in the first chapter of Be With Me.

TRC: You are a very prolific writer with a number of releases scheduled for 2013. Will you please share with us on what you are currently working and what else you have in store for 2013?

Jennifer: I just finished writing Trust in Me which is Wait for You in Cam’s POV.  I’m currently writing Be With Me.  My writing schedule is tight, so I have back to back books lined up to write this year.

TRC: You write YA, New Adult, Romance, Erotic Romance; do you have a favorite genre, and why?

Jennifer: I don’t really have a favorite genre.  My favorite book is typically the book that
I’m currently working on, so I think that probably holds true for the different genres, too.

Since I’m writing New Adult at the moment, I would say that it’s my favorite genre right now.

TRC: Also, what  are the challenges of switching between genres?

Jennifer: Since my stories in each genre are so different,  it’s not as difficult as you would think to switch between them.  I just have to be mindful of the content within each genre to make sure I keep the sexiness age appropriate.

TRC:Would you like to add anything else?

Jennifer:  Just thanks for participating in the blog tour!

Thank you, Jennifer for answering our questions. We look forward to continuing to read your books, and to work with you in the future.

Catching Up With Nalini Singh

Nalini Singh color c Deborah Hillman

The Reading Cafe is thrilled to welcome back Nalini Singh. Next week (June 4th), Nalini will be releasing the 12th book in her wonderful Psy/Changeling series. She is here today to discuss Heart of Obsidian, as well as what else we may have to look forward to in 2013

Before we start the interview, let’s refresh your memory about Nalini.

About The Author Gold and Purple

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh is passionate about writing.  Though she’s traveled as far afield as the deserts of China, the Highlands of Scotland and the temples of Japan, it is the journey of the imagination that fascinates her most.  She’s beyond delighted to be able to follow her dream as writer.  Nalini lives and works in beautiful New Zealand.  Visit the author online at www.nalinisingh.com, www.facebook.com/AuthorNaliniSingh, and www.twitter.com/nalinisingh.

Let’s now talk to Nalini.

Interview blue:black

TRC:   Hi Nalini. Thank you for taking the time to revisit us at The Reading Cafe, to discuss your new release Heart of Obsidian, as well as to give us an update as to what you have in store for us in 2013.

Nalini: Thanks for having me!

TRC:  You have just released the 12th book in your Psy/Changeling series.  For those who may not have read this series, would you please give us a brief description of the premise of the series?

Nalini: The Psy-Changeling series is set in a world with three races:

The Psy, who have phenomenal powers of the mind, such as telekinesis and telepathy, but who have conditioned emotions out of themselves in an effort to fight the murderous insanity that stalks them.

The changelings, who are true shapeshifters, as at home in their animal forms as they are in their human form. The two main packs in the series are the DarkRiver Leopards and the SnowDancer Wolves. In contrast to the Psy, the changelings are very tactile and emotional, and blood loyal to their families, lovers, and packs.

Caught between the Psy and the changelings, humans are the weakest of the three races on the surface, but they have an important role to play as the series continues.

Heart of ObsidianTRC: Heart of Obsidian will be released next week, June 4th.  Without revealing all the secrets that have been kept under wrap, while we have been impatiently waiting, can you give us a brief description of this book?  🙂

Nalini: By the time this interview goes live, a two chapter preview of the book will have been posted, so your readers can go straight there to have a read! (http://www.nalinisingh.com/obsidian.php)

The events of this book will slam through the Psy-Changeling world for some time to come. It is a critical episode in the series.

TRC: Ok, I’m going to try.  Will Heart of Obsidian reveal who is Ghost?  You do not have to tell us who it is, just a little crumb if we will finally find out who he is?  🙂

Nalini: Yes, you will – in an unexpected way in my opinion. 🙂

TRC:  YES🙂

TRC: The last time you were here, you said there was an end to this series arc.  Can you give us an update on this, since this is the 12th book; how many more do we have to look forward to?

Nalini: In my head, I foresee 2-3 more books to end this arc (I’m not sure if 2 books will be enough to tie up all the threads, which is why it might be 3. I won’t know until I sit down to write the books).

However, after that, there will still be plenty to explore in this world and I hope readers will be as interested in doing that as I am.

TRC: We always want to stay in your world.  🙂

TRC: What are your thoughts in regards to continuing the premise of Psy/Changeling with your new arc, and will we still get to see those wonderful characters that we have come to love?

Nalini: Yes, absolutely. I love the sense of family in the series, and I couldn’t totally walk away from all my beloved characters – though you will also be spending time in new places, and meeting new people.

Link to Nalini's Full Booklisting in reading order

TRC: Upcoming in October, 2013, you will release your 6th Guild Hunter book, would you please tell us the premise of Archangel’s Legion?

Archangels LegionNalini: The blurb of Archangel’s Legion is now out! (www.nalinisingh.com/legion.php)

It begins with angels falling from the sky in New York and continues with rivers of blood – Elena and Raphael have a hard, brutal fight on their hands to save their city, but through it all, they work together as a single beating unit.

You’ll also get to see a lot more of Illium, Aodhan, and Naasir in particular.

TRC: What are you currently working on?

Nalini: I’m preparing for my USA/London book tour in June, so I’m working on a few smaller pieces, and making notes for my next Psy-Changeling book, which I’ll begin to write after the tour.

TRC: Thank you, Nalini for answering our questions. We look forward to continuing to read your books, and to work with you in the future.

Nalini: Thanks for the wonderful interview!

An Interview with Dee C. May

An Interview with Dee C. May

dee c may

The Reading Cafe is happy to introduce first time author, Dee C. May. She is here to discuss her new book, Wynter’s Horizon, and to tell us a bit about herself.

Before we begin the interview, let’s find out something about Dee C. May.

I was born and raised in Old Brookville, New York, which is 20 miles east of Manhattan. I attended Friends Academy in Locust Valley, New York for high school, and went on to earn a B.A. from Connecticut College in 1992 and a J.D. from Albany Law School, Union University in 1997. I practiced law in Manhattan and Long Island for several years before marrying and relocating to Cornelius, North Carolina in 2000, where I worked for a small firm specializing in civil litigation and real estate. In 2003, I switched to part time employment to raise my first son. After my second son, I stopped working. In 2009, the same year we relocated to Davidson, I started writing Wynter’s Horizon which at the time I called Past the Horizon. Since that time I have edited and rewritten it dozens of times until it became the story Evernight just released .

A horse enthusiast my entire life, in my spare time I care for and ride my Norwegian fjord mare, named Victoria.

Interview-BlueHi Dee.  Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

TRC: Will you please tell us about yourself?

Dee: I’m 42 years old, married with 2 boys, 6 and 9. I grew up in NY and relocated to NC 11 years ago to be with my husband who was just my boyfriend at the time. I love living in NC. We live on a 6 acre farm with 1 dog, 2 cats and 3 horses.

TRC: Have you always been interested in writing?

Dee:  Yes. I’ve always loved books and reading. When I was in second grade I wrote a story about a blind girl who rode horses. That was my first “book”.  Throughout the years I’ve free wrote, mostly just a few pages here and there. Wynter’s Horizon is my longest project.

TRC: Is there anything (in general) you find particularly challenging about writing?

Dee:  I find the detail in transposing a scene from my mind onto paper challenging. What I can picture in my mind in a few seconds can take paragraphs and pages to become written and then longer to edit and make sure what I imagined is what the words say.

TRC:  Can you tell how you came up with the idea of Wynter’s Horizon? Is this a standalone book, if not, how many books do you plan?

Dee:  Wynter’s Horizon started as an idea I had two decades ago during college. I was a huge Anne Rice fan and had just finished Queen of the Damned and I thought about meeting a vampire as a college student. It took 20 years for me to actually find the words and time to write it. Then the story kind of evolved from there and I changed my hero from a vampire to a genetically altered assassin/military guy.

With my heroine and her troubles with her ex-boyfriend Jason, I felt like almost everyone has had a friend or known someone involved in a relationship that was just toxic to them and had difficulty getting out. I think so many books glorify the bad boy, the un-loveable guy who suddenly with the heroine’s love reforms and ‘sees the light’. Jason is that guy who treats girls badly and he doesn’t miraculously get better. He remains the jerk and ass, no matter what Wynter is willing to do for him and she must figure out how to get herself out.

When I envisioned this story I saw it over a ten year period as I followed my hero and heroine through many struggles so I do see it as a series, most likely a trilogy. I have had complaints that Wynter is not a strong heroine but I saw her as developing through the series and gaining strength in each book and coming into her own more and more. The sequel is half written.

Wynter's HorizonTRC:  Would you please give us a brief description of Wynter’s Horizon?

Dee:  Here’s the 32 word pitch and then a longer blurb:

A distraught college girl and trained assassin, both running from sordid pasts, find love and redemption amidst turmoil and trauma caused by a vindictive ex-boyfriend and a comrade hell bent on vengeance.

Wynter Murello blames herself for her best friend’s death and because of this becomes embroiled in an emotionally abusive relationship that sends her spiraling down. Trained British assassin Reginald Beckett is also running from a past mistake. Thrown together the two find friendship and solace in each other while hiding the depth of their true feelings. But a vengeful comrade is searching for Beck, and Beck and Wynter must figure out if love is worth the risk of broken hearts, before it is too late.

Links to order Wynter’s Horizon: Amazon / Barnes & NobleKobo

TRC:  Can you tell us what are you currently working on?

Dee:  I am working on the sequel to Wynter’s Horizon and also another love story that takes place in the south between an aging ballet dancer and a musician.

TRC:  Wynter’s Horizon is YA Romance, do you have any thoughts of writing in any other genres?

Dee:  I can’t say definitively no but I do like writing love stories. I am not tied to the new adult/young adult genre as the story I am working on now is contemporary.

TRC:  What is your writing process?  Do you like to write at specific times, in a special place?

Dee:  I generally write at night after my kids are in bed. Strangely, my favorite place to write is sitting on a stool in my kid’s bathroom. It’s quiet and peaceful and no one looks for me there.

TRC:  Many authors bounce ideas with family and friends.  With whom do you bounce ideas?

Dee:  I have a bunch of friends who are great first readers and I also have a freelance editor who helped me to edit Wynter’s Horizon. She’s always there when I need to run some ideas by someone.

TRC:  Would you like to add anything else?

Thank you for taking the time to interview me. I appreciate you reviewing my book and sitting down to talk to me.

An Interview with Erin McCarthy

An Interview with Erin McCarthy

erin mccarthy
The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Erin McCarthy  as our guest today. She is here to discuss her new book, True, (our review is below this post), which was just  released last week, and to tell us a little bit about herself.

Let’s welcome Erin.

Hi Erin and welcome to The Reading Café.  We would like to start with some background information.

TRC: Please tell us something about yourself?

Erin: I’ve been a full time writer for almost ten years now (yay!) and have two almost grown kids, two cats, and a dog.  When I’m not writing, I love live music, martinis, traveling, old houses and taking bellydance classes.

TRC: Have you always been interested in writing?

Erin: Yes, since the first grade I have wanted to be a writer.  I won a ‘first novel’ contest that year and I was hooked.  But I put it aside in college to get a more practical degree, which I never used. That’s what you call irony, for sure.

TRC: What challenges have you faced getting your novels published?

Erin: I wrote 9 books before I sold my first manuscript, so that was definitely a challenge.  But with each book, I honed my writing skills and got a lot of great advice from editors, so in the end, it was worth the wait.

True

TRC:
True is your latest release, can you please give us a brief description of this book?  Is this a standalone book, or is this part of a series?

Erin: TRUE is my first new adult story.  Rory is socially awkward and is just looking to have the same sexual experiences as other girls, only she is not prepared for the feelings she winds up having for Tyler.  There will be a second book, out in November 2013 with characters from TRUE.

 Links to order True:
Amazon / Barnes & Noble  /  Kobo

TRC: In July you have your second book of your Impalers series, Fangs for Nothing.  Can you please tell us the premise of the Impalers series, and a brief description of Fangs for Nothing?  How many books are you planning for this series?

Erin: There’s just the two books in the series.  Kathy and I came up with the idea for the books when talking about how easy it would be to hide as a vampire in New Orleans, a city we both love.  Then I’m not even sure how we leaped from there to the movie the Hangover and blending the two, but it involved wine and lots of laughing.  Basically, the books show ‘the night after’ when a vampire band wakes up with no memory of the night before.  In the second book, the band members again lose their memory after Saxon’s wedding and wake up in a dominatrix dungeon.

TRC: You also just released in March, Seeing is Believing in your Ohio’s Most Haunted Towns series. Can you please tell our members about the premise of this series, and how many books are you planning?

Erin: These books have a light paranormal element involving ghost’s in a fictional haunted town.  A Date With the Other Side was the first, then Heiress for Hire (which was just reissued with a new cover) and the latest installment, Seeing Is Believing.  This is it for this series, since the third book jumped fifteen years in time.

TRC: You write contemporary and paranormal romance, as well as YA.  Do you have a favorite genre?  Is there any other type of genre that interests you to try?

Erin: I like writing the emotional stuff more than the humor but I definitely like writing all of it or I wouldn’t do it. 😉

TRC: Your YA book, The Coming Dark was self-published.  Will you continue to do more self-publishing of e-books?  Will there be another book after The Coming Dark?

Erin: I don’t see myself doing a follow up to The Coming Dark because I have no clue how I would cram writing it into my schedule.  This was a book I wrote several years ago and sold to a publisher and due to creative differences, I ended up self-publishing it instead.  So this was a bit of a one-off thing for me.

TRC: Can you please tell us what are you working on now?

Erin: I am working on a second new adult book, which features the heroine from TRUE’s roommate, Jessica.  Rory and Jessica are total opposites, and while Jessica may have a ton of sexual experience, she has never let a guy into her heart—until now.  It will be released in November of this year.

TRC: Can you please tell us your writing process?  Do you have a favorite spot or specific time to write?

Erin: I write anywhere that isn’t a desk.  The couch, the bed, the coffeeshop… I tend to migrate all over as I’m working.  I write Monday through Friday and basically I get up, check email and social media, then write until lunch.  Work out, write until my son needs to be picked up.  I’m very disciplined and very boring.

TRC: When you are not writing, what are some of your favorite things to do?

Erin: Oops, I jumped the gun and answered this in the first question.

LIGHTNING ROUND

Favorite Foodpizza

Favorite Dessert- ice cream

Favorite TV show At the moment, it’s The Following

Favorite Movie I never get tired of watching Love, Actually

Dark or Milk Chocolate- Neither, I’m allergic to chocolate!

Favorite Literary Character (male & female) not your own: Mr. Darcy.  Dreamy sigh.

TRC: Erin, thank you very much for taking the time to answer our questions.  The Reading Café wishes you good luck with your books, and we look forward to having you visit us again.

Erin: Thanks for having me!

An Interview with Ashley Elston

An Interview with Ashley Elston

ashley elstonThe Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Ashley Elston. Ashley recently released her debut novel, The Rules for Disappearing, and she is here to discuss her book, as well as what we may have to look forward to in 2013

Before we start the interview, let’s learn a little about Ashley.

Ashley Elston lives is North Louisiana with her husband, three sons and two cats. She worked as a wedding and portrait photographer for ten years until she decided to pursue writing full time. Ashley is also a certified landscape horticulturist and loves digging in the dirt.

Interview blue:black

Ashley, we at the Reading Café would like to thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

TRC: Please tell us about yourself

Ashley: Hi! Thanks for having me. I live in North Louisiana and I’m a wife and mother to three boys. I spent ten years as a wedding/portrait photographer and now, when not writing, I help my husband with our landscaping business.

TRC: When and how did you first become interested in writing?

Ashley: I know everyone says this but I’ve always loved to write. Honestly, I never thought I would actually publish a book. Writing was always just something I did for me. When I finished THE RULES FOR DISAPPEARING, my husband encouraged me move on to the next step – try to find a home for it. I’m not sure it would have ever left my desktop computer without his support.

TRC: The Rules for Disappearing is your first book ever published? How did it feel when you found out you were going to be published?

Ashley: Yes, this is my debut. It was incredible when my agent, Sarah Davies, called to tell me about the offer from Disney Hyperion – extreme happiness with a small dose of panic.

the rules for disappearingTRC: Can you please tell us the premise of The Rules for Disappearing, and how you came up with the idea?

Ashley: The Rules for Disappearing is about a family in the Witness Protection Program and they are relocated to Natchitoches, Louisiana. I’ve always found the idea of the Witness Protection Program fascinating and it would be horrible for a teenage girl, who was forced to relocate (a lot), to hide who she really was.

Links to order The Rules for Disappearing:
Amazon / Barnies & Noble / The Book Depository

TRC: Is The Rules for Disappearing a standalone book, or is this part of a series. If it is a series, how many books do you plan on writing?

Ashley: There will be two books, THE RULES FOR DISAPPEARING, and an untitled sequel.

TRC: If your book becomes a movie, do you have preferences as to whom you would like to play your characters?

Ashley: Oh, wow! I’m not sure I have a preference as far as actors but what would matter to me is that the actors chosen for the Louisiana characters have authentic southern accents. It’s a HUGE pet peeve of mine when it’s done wrong.

TRC: The Rules for Disappearing is considered a YA novel.   How did you become interested in writing YA, and would you like to write other genres?

Ashley: I love YA books! And when I had the idea for this story, it felt right for it to be written for the YA audience. I’m open to the idea of writing for other genres but I don’t have any immediate plans to do so.

TRC: What are you currently working on?

Ashley: I’m working on revisions to the sequel of RULES.

TRC: What is your writing process?  Do you have a favorite place or time you like to write?

Ashley: With three kids and a small business, I write in any free moment I can find!

TRC: Is there a book or author that gave you the inspiration to write?

Ashley: I don’t think there is just one book or author that inspired me. I love to read all genres and I think that has influenced me more than anything.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Ashley: Just thanks so much for having me!

LIGHTNING ROUND:

FAVORITE FOODAny and all seafood

FAVORITE DESSERTMy mother’s German chocolate cake

MILK OR DARK CHOCOLATE Milk

FAVORITE AUTHORohhh…so hard. For YA – probably Stephanie Perkins and Kristin Cashore. For adult – Ken Follett and Sidney Sheldon.

FAVORITE BOOK – I couldn’t possibly pick

LAST MOVIE YOU SAW  I took my youngest to see The Croods. Very cute.

Thank you, Ashley for answering our questions. The Reading Café wishes you the best of luck with The Rules for Disappearing.

An Interview with Gordon Osmond

An Interview with Gordon Osmond

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome Gordon Osmond.  Gordon is here today to discuss his debut novel, Slipping on Stardust, as well as to tell us a little about himself.

Let’s meet Gordon.

Hi Gordon.  Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

TRC: Will you please tell us about yourself?

Gordon: I’d be delighted, and many thanks for this invitation. Historically, I’m a Wall Street lawyer, who retired at the first opportunity to do different things. The first different thing was writing plays for the stage. Then, frustrated with dealing with actors, directors, and designers, I turned to writing books—first a book introducing a novel approach to the teaching of English (So You Think You Know English—A Guide to English for Those Who Think They Don’t Need One), then a novel approach to me (Wet Firecrackers—the Unauthorized Autobiography of Gordon Osmond), and finally a novel, period (Slipping on Stardust).

TRC: You have written non-fiction books. You are also a lawyer, playwright, radio show host, etc.  How did you decide to write a fiction novel, and where do you find the time?

Gordon: I wanted to express certain themes that are important to me without the constraints inherent in writing stage plays. I wanted to add to dialogue descriptive passages (which one rather dim editor I fired a while back referred to as “infodumps.”) relating not only to the physical circumstances of the story, but also to the pyschological landscape the characters are inhabiting.

TRC: Is there anything (in general) you find particularly challenging about writing a fiction novel?

Gordon: Like any other piece of writing, success depends initially on engaging the reader with a compelling story that depicts conflicts clearly and with intensity. I think it’s also important that the story be told as only you, the author, can tell it. Everyone is a finger print and a snowflake; it’s important that one’s writing reflect the unique personality and perspective of the author. The aforesaid editor/publisher referred to this as writing from an “omniscient point of view,” which she considered felonious, Dickens and Tolstoy to the contrary notwithstanding.

TRC: Slipping on Stardust is your debut novel. Can you tell how you came up with the idea of this story?

Gordon: The events of Slipping on Stardust are based primarily on extraordinary events that occurred in the course of my participation in the practice of law and in community and regional theatre. The real life events were, of course, enhanced and intensified for dramatic purposes.

Slipping-on-StardustTRC: Would you please give us a brief description of Slipping on Stardust?

Gordon: Very briefly, Slipping on Stardust is the story of the impact of the arrival of a faded Hollywood movie star upon a small town, particularly upon the members of the family the star is staying with. Passions are stirred, betrayal and scandals erupt, all of which propel family members to New York City and Hollywood in search of dreams of questionable value. Think Peyton Place meets Madame Bovary.

TRC: Slipping on Stardust is Romance Suspense, have you ever thought about writing in another genre?

Links to order Slipping on Stardust: Amazon / Barnes & Noble

Gordon: Being a bit of a hit-and-run writer, I have, but for the immediate future I’m concentrating on a sequel to Slipping on Stardust. I’m curious about the future of the characters of the novel, and some readers have been kind enough to share that curiosity.

TRC: What is your writing process?  Do you like to write at specific times, in a special place?

Gordon: I’m generally a morning person, and I prefer to write in quiet, beautiful, and natural surroundings. The first chapters of Slipping on Stardust were written poolside in Bahia, Brazil. I’d love to start its sequel in comparable circumstances.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas with family and friends.  With whom do you bounce ideas?

Gordon: With the exception of the person to whom Slipping on Stardust, and all my other books for that matter, is dedicated, no one. As a committed individualist, I’m not keen on writing by committee. Once the book is written, however, I avidly seek, and profit immeasurably from editorial and dramaturgical suggestions. In other words, I bounce the book, but not its seminal ideas.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Gordon: Only my sincere thanks for these thoughtful questions and for the opportunity to try to answer them.

LIGHTNING ROUND

Favorite Food: Strawberry champagne risotto.

Favorite Dessert: Bananas Foster.

Favorite Novel: I’m on the lookout for my future favorite. It well may be Stalked, due out later this year, by one of my favorite authors, James Broderick.

Favorite Movie: A Streetcar Named Desire.

Favorite Actress or Actor: On the female side, where almost all of my favorites reside, I’d select Geraldine Page, Kim Stanley, Jo Van Fleet, and Elaine May.

Dream Car: Any make or model that doesn’t crash or run out of gas.

TRC: Thank you Gordon for answering our questions. The Reading Café wishes you the best of luck with Slipping on Stardust.

Gordon: It was a great pleasure. And best of luck to you with the very important work you’re doing for your fellow authors.
