Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Date: June 1, 2013

Interview red:black

TRC: Hi Irina ad Jo-An and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the June release of VAMPIRE ELITE book one in your Vampire Elite series. We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us about IRINA ARGO?

Irina ArgoIrina Argo is the pen name for Irina Kardos and Jo-An Torres.

Irina lives in a pretty dark world: by day she’s a clinical psychologist at a juvenile correctional facility, where she deals with the extremes of human behavior on a daily basis; at night, she cares for her husband, who was paralyzed several years ago. Writing has always been her passion, and now it’s what brings light into her life. She is originally from Russia, where she worked as a TV journalist.

Jo-An is a Leo, a lioness emerging to follow her dream: to write a book of her own. As the owner of a costume shop for many years, she was able to satisfy her creative nature and allow it to flourish. She believes that anything is possible if you believe in yourself. She currently resides in

TRC: What difficulties or challenges do you face writing as a team?

Irina is a romantic, beauty, tranquility, joyfulness.

Jo-An is an A,B,C, black and white personality, but with an intense creative nature – I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but somehow it seems to work. She revs it up, I tone it down, then we reach a happy medium.

TRC: Was there any particular premise or scenario that one or the other focused on such as characters development or storyline flow?

Irina/Jo-An: Reality – we wanted to make them totally believable – that they live among us.

TRC: Has there ever been an issue where there was no compromise and therefore a character or premise had to be scrapped?

Irina/Jo-An: We don’t believe so. We compromised on everything. We would scrap when our editor strongly disagreed.

VAmpire EliteVAMPIRE ELITE is your June 2013 release in the Vampire Elite series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Irina/Jo-An: A millennia-long war between two immortal races is about to come to an end. Long ago, the Vampire Elite began capturing the immortals called the Amiti, attracted by their unique blood properties. Now most Amiti live in underground cells, forced to serve as vampires’ bloodstock. The few surviving free Amiti, preparing a final strike, have declared the Amiti Queen a traitor. Her execution makes possible the rise of a new Queen, her young daughter Arianna, who will inherit her mother’s mystical powers. Working with the Keepers of the Key, Arianna may be able to eliminate the vampires, once and for all, from the face of the earth.

The new Queen is the last hope to save her people, and she’s ready to fight to the last drop of her blood. But the King of the Vampires has other plans. What neither expects is the passion that erupts between them.

Vampire Elite is an epic story of a bitter conflict between two races, and the effect of that conflict on everyone living in its grip. The characters are driven to love and betrayal, vengeance and sacrifice in a world without easy black-and-white answers. Based on an ancient Egyptian legend, packed with action and intrigue, Vampire Elite will pull you into the entrancing world of immortals and open new portals into their hidden universe.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Irina/Jo-An: Three minimum, the second book is already in a rough draft stage and the story continues to evolve.

TRC: How thoroughly do you plan out your characters and story before you begin the first draft?

Irina: They just come into me, there is no pre-development. I write what I see and feel emanating from the character. Irina: We don’t plan it out, it just flows through my mind and I put it to paper as it comes to me. I don’t even know what is going to happen next, and am as surprised as the readers will be as they turn each page.

Jo-An: Basically, Irina created the story and asked me if I would read her first draft and give her some feed back. I found myself editing, suggesting scenarios and fleshing it out. It was then that she asked me to co-author the book. I was thrilled and am deeply indebted to her for allowing me to let my creative juices flow and reach my own dream of someday writing a book.

TRC: Would you please tell us how you handle the stress and anxiety of writing deadlines and family life?

Irina: I just take it as it comes and do not stress, what will be will be – I have often stayed up all night to complete a chapter or prepare information for Blogs, updating the Web-Site, designing images in photo-shop.

Jo-An: For me, it is not difficult. I am retired and have a lot of time on my hands as I am not a socializer. I would rather be at home with a good book than at a loud party interacting with a lot of people. The only time it affects me is when I travel and do not have internet access. It makes it very stressful for Irina because her life is so full of responsibilities and she has to find time to work on the book. My husband and I have a monster of a motorhome and when he wants to go – we go, along with our 5 cats. A lot of the time I am not able to get internet access and it does put additional strain on Irina.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and struggle with other authors, friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas and strategy?

Irina: My friends and co-workers.

Jo-An: Only with our editor and each other. None of my friends or family are into the paranormal, so they would be of no help.

TRC: If you could select one reality show in which you were one of the contestants, which show would you chose and why?

Irina: Sorry, I don’t watch TV 🙁

Jo-An: The Apprentice. Every task requires a vivid and creative imagination. I can find ways to do things and make things happen when everyone else is stumped.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Irina: Updating images, keeping all of the sites current, working with the printer for our paperback copy, interacting with all of the promoters we are working with.

Jo-An: Promoting the book and keeping it in the top ten. Spending hours and hours on the computer writing personal emails, reading up on how to gain exposure.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Irina/Jo-An: We would like to thank you for hosting this tour and hope that it is well attended. And sincerely appreciate your hosting our book on your Blog, and want to thank everyone who visits it …especially those who buy the book and enjoy it as much as we do.

How can you make a choice between saving your people and destroying the one you love?

A millennia-long war between two immortal races is about to come to an end. Long ago, the Vampire Elite began capturing members of another race of immortal beings, the Amiti, forcing them to become their blood suppliers—bloodstock—and locking them in underground cells, where they are treated like livestock. Now, the few remaining free Amiti are making a final attempt to strike back. The Queen of the Amiti has been proclaimed a traitor and executed. Her death makes possible the rise of a new Queen, her young daughter Arianna, who becomes the last hope of her dying race. Arianna totally embraces her mission and is ready to fight for her people to the last drop of her blood but encounters an unexpected challenge—the vampire King Tor. The Amiti Queen and the King of the vampires are drawn into a trap of love where each has to make the ultimate choice: to kill their loved one or risk the extermination of their people.

The Reading Cafe would like to welcome the author the the NIGHT PROWLER series J.T.Geissinger

Interview

J.T.GeissingerTRC: Hi J.T. and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the June 18, 2013 release of RAPTURE’S EDGE.

J.T:  Thank you so much for having me! I’m excited to be with you and your wonderful readers today.

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

J.T:  I write paranormal romance/urban fantasy, and Rapture’s Edge is the third release in my Night Prowler series. I’m an RWA RITA finalist for Edge of Oblivion, and an RWA PRISM finalist for Shadow’s Edge, the first book in the series. I grew up in Los Angeles, and currently live in a small beach community 15 minutes from downtown LA with my husband. I’m an avid reader, an avid wine drinker, I’m addicted to diet Mountain Dew and Red Bull. I’m also a stray cat magnet. For some reason, they find me anywhere. I recently went on vacation to the Caribbean and every stray cat on the islands made a beeline right for me. Maybe it’s because they know how much I love them…

Rapture's Edge TRC: RAPTURE’S EDGE is the latest release in your Night Prowler series. Would you please tell us something about the storyline?

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

J.T:   Rapture’s Edge is book three in the Night Prowler series. It’s set in Paris, and our heroine Eliana is an art thief and competitor in the underground fighting circuit of the city. It’s been three years since she last saw her former lover, Demetrius—standing over her dead father’s body with a gun. In the meantime, she’s been in hiding, planning revenge. She’s caught by the police trying to steal a painting from the Louvre, and Demetrius—who is desperate to explain himself, and still madly in love with Eliana—comes to her rescue. Only she’s not having any of his explanations—she just wants to kill him! Making matters worse, an elite band of assassins have been dispatched by the leaders of the other Ikati colonies to kill Eliana because she could expose their secrets to the human world.

It’s a very action-packed story. A recent reviewer said, “reading this book was like watching an action movie. There were art heists, fight clubs, car chases, prison breaks, secret societies, mad scientists, torture chambers, assassins, gun fights, a kick ass heroine, a bad ass hero and villains so evil they made my frigging skin crawl.” I love it!

TRC: If you could virtually cast the lead characters of Demetrius and Eliana, which models or actors, would best represent your ideal image?

J.T:   Well, D is huge, 6’4 and 230 pounds, so we’d need a really big boy to fill his shoes. And he’s tatted and pierced, so no pretty boys will do, either. Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) would be a great choice, or Tom Hardy when he’s really bulked up like in his role as Bane in Batman or in the movie Warrior. As I was writing Eliana, I imagined her as Kate Beckinsale in the Underworld movies.

TRC: What has been the inspiration behind the Ikati shifters and their fabled storyline history?

J.T:   It all started with a stray cat. One day an incredibly sleek, beautiful female cat appeared out of the blue at my house, demanding a meal. She looks like a miniature panther, all black with bright yellow/green eyes. I fell in love.

This cat has an uncanny ability to disappear. One minute she’s there, looking at you as if she’s just about to say something, the next she’s gone—poof!—as if she was never there at all. It must be a feral cat trick, but it got me to thinking.

Two things occurred to me immediately: one, there are a lot of people who hate cats. Two: the Egyptians revered them. Put those two things together and mix in a big bowl, and you’ve got a race of cat shifters worshipped as gods by the ancient Egyptians who’ve had to hide because they’ve since been hunted by humanity. I spiced it up with some historical nuggets about Egypt, the Inquisition, witch hunts, religion, Rome…it goes on, but you get the idea.

TRC: EDGE OF DARKNESS is the title of your December 2013 release. Would you please tell us something about the premise? Hero/Heroine?

J.T:   I’m so excited about Edge of Darkness. I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever written, and the darkest, and has the most tragic, romantic, beautiful storyline. And it features Christian, a fan favorite from book one, who is also one of my favorite characters of the series. Our heroine Ember is very broken, and the book deals with the theme of how to go on living after terrible loss, and how love can both heal you and tear you apart. Here’s the book description:

Six years after a shocking tragedy left her emotionally and physically scarred, Ember Jones lives a life of quiet isolation in Barcelona. Determined to keep her troubled past a secret, she keeps her head down and her heart locked up tight. Until the day a beautiful, mysterious stranger walks into her life, and her carefully controlled world is shattered forever.

Christian McLoughlin is unlike anyone Ember has ever met. Wealthy, cultured, and utterly charismatic, he also has dark secrets of his own. They succumb to the undeniable pull between them and embark on a passionate affair, but things turn explosive when the truth about Christian and the reason he came to Barcelona is exposed. As their dark pasts collide, the two unlikely lovers find themselves caught in a web of danger and deceit that neither of them might survive.

The Edge of Darkness, where hunter becomes hunted, no one can be trusted, and love is the most dangerous game of them all.

TRC: You blend a paranormal storyline with the reality of the modern world. How do you keep your plot unpredictable without sacrificing content or believability?

Night Prowler Series

J.T:   Each book features a different couple, which really helps keep things fresh because each story has its own set of conflicts. But there is an ongoing plot thread behind all the relationships that ties the books together, and once we get to the final book, readers will be able to look back and go, “Aha! I see where this all was leading!” There is always a certain suspense of disbelief that has to take place when a reader enters a supernatural world, but it can be tricky combining the supernatural with our own world, so I try to keep the characters as “real” as possible, despite their unusual abilities. And the themes and conflicts are universal, so that helps keep things believable as well.

TRC: How thoroughly do you plan out or research your characters and story before you begin the first draft?

J.T:   My characters always come first. I spend a few weeks getting to know them, interviewing them about their likes and dislikes, their quirks, what makes them crazy, what makes them angry, what makes them who they are. Every person, real or fictional, has a past, and I like to dig deep into my characters’ pasts so I can write about them in an honest way. Even if most of the details are never used, it adds richness and depth to the story.

As far as the plot, I have a general idea of where I’m going and where I want to end up. The rest I leave up to the characters; they tell me what to do along the way. It might sound strange, but they come alive as the story develops, and they begin to tell their own story and I just begin to take dictation and type it all out! Each of my books is set in a real location, so I do a lot of research on the city and surrounding areas. For instance, Rapture’s Edge is set in Paris, and prominently features the catacombs beneath the city, so I did extensive reading and internet research about those areas, among others.

TRC: What struggles or difficulties (e.g. research, logistics etc) did you encounter getting your books and this series to publication?

J.T:   I was very, very lucky. I didn’t decide to write a novel until I turned 40. Then I wrote it, and found an agent who loved it, and she found a publisher who loved it, too, and was willing to take a chance on an unknown author. Then it was a bestseller and both the first and second books have been nominated for prestigious awards. So my advice to anyone looking to make a life change is this: Go for it! You only lose if you don’t try.
Keeping a series going is a bit of a struggle, especially with all the characters and details and plots that can get confused, but it’s a good struggle. The main struggle I have, always, is with self-doubt. I never feel like anything I do is good enough.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about you?

J.T:   I’ve been told people find me intimidating, which is hilarious. I’m just as neurotic as everyone else. Plus I’m a giant goofball, and will bump into any piece of furniture within a ten-foot radius. Although I do have a very “big” personality, and a tendency to really focus on people and look them in the eye when they’re talking, which one friend describes as “the stare.” Maybe I should have gone into law enforcement or something…nah, I hate telling people what to do.

TRC: Who or what has been the biggest influence in your life and why?

J.T:   My husband, hands down, has been the most positive influence in my life. I was a wild animal in my teens and twenties, a total disaster, and it wasn’t until I met and married Jay that I gained direction and settled down. He is the reason I write romance, because I know from experience that true love exists, soul mates exist, and finding that special person who gets you and has your back can absolutely save your life. Every book I write is dedicated to him because he has saved me in so many ways. Today is our thirteenth wedding anniversary, as a matter of fact! Love you, honey.

TRC: Who is the first person you think about when you need someone to talk with and why?

J.T:   My husband Jay. He’s the smartest person I’ve ever met, and is also the only person I’ve ever met who is unafraid of anything. (Well, except spiders. He really, really hates spiders.) I’m the emotional one, the one who freaks out and over-reacts, and he can cut through all that and get to the heart of the matter and calm me down. He’s just so f*ing…cool.

TRC: If you could select one reality TV show to be a contestant, which show would you chose and why?

J.T:   I DESPISE reality TV. Hate, loathe, detest, all these are too soft for what I think of reality TV. It kills me to see people make such desperate, utter whores of themselves in the pursuit of fame or money. Okay, with the exception of So You Think You Can Dance—but at least those kids have a dream they’re trying to pursue, and dancing is art. The Kardashians, on the other hand—don’t even get me started.

TRC: What are the 5 things you would like to accomplish in the next ten years?

J.T:   This is a tricky question. I am not a goal-oriented person, never have been, never will be. I’m a pantster, I live day to day and let life take me where it will, which is part of the adventure. (I don’t have kids, so I have the luxury of indulging myself.) But I also recognize the importance of planning for the future, in case it comes, which it probably will. So I have a 401(k), blah, blah, blah. I guess I’d just like to keep writing and getting better at it, and there’s a long list of places I’d like to travel to, and that’s about it. If there’s one thing I’ve learned for sure, it’s that life happens moment to moment and the best way to prepare for the future is to be flexible and keep your eyes open for opportunity.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

J.T:   I just finished a story titled The Last Vampire, and now I’m working on book five in the Night Prowler series, Darkness Bound. It’s set in Brazil, so I’m in the research phase.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

J.T:   I’d like to say thank you to my wonderful readers!! I feel so honored that you take the time to read my books and share them with your friends, and I am very, very grateful for you. I’m also very grateful to bloggers (yay, Reading Café!) who do such a service for both readers and authors in spreading the word about books they enjoyed.

About The author

J.T.GeissingerJ.T. Geissinger’s debut novel, Shadow’s Edge, was published in 2012 and was a #1 Amazon US and UK bestseller in fantasy romance and romance series. She has been nominated for the prestigious RITA® award from the Romance Writers of America for best paranormal romance for her second book in the Night Prowler series, Edge of Oblivion.

A life-long lover of reading and a self-professed “book addict,” she didn’t realize her dream of writing a novel until a milestone birthday forced her to take stock of her goals in life. Always believing the right time to commit to putting pen to paper would magically announce itself, it took waking up one cold January morning with a shiny new zero as the second number in her age to kick start her determination.

Starting on that very day, she wrote what would become Shadow’s Edge in a little over four months and submitted it to several literary agents. Nothing happened. Thinking that was the end of that but by no means willing to give up on her dreams of being published, she began work on a second manuscript.

Then, during a trip to Italy in honor of their 10th wedding anniversary and the honeymoon she and her husband never took, she received an email that would change her life. It was from an agent, Marlene Stringer of Stringer Literary, and it contained the three words every aspiring author longs to hear: “I loved it.”

Marlene sold the manuscript to Montlake Romance who published it six months later. Hitting the #1 Amazon bestseller lists within weeks of publication, Shadow’s Edge was book one of the Night Prowler novels. Book two, Edge of Oblivion, was published in October 2012 and will be followed by Rapture’s Edge in June 2013, and Edge of Darkness in fall 2013. There are six books total planned for the series.

They find ways to use them—some for good and some for evil. When Amanda and Chris encounter a ruthless group of gangsters with the same faculty, tragedy follows—and Amanda faces the greatest challenge of her life

REVIEW: Lightpoints by Peter Kassan is an interesting twist or version of the Near Death Experience (NDE) that many talk about having. It includes Out of Body Experience (OBE) as well. It goes just a little further and explores what would happen if in some cases a person was brought back after just touching “The Light” and not joining it. In this story those lucky (or unlucky as the case may be) people have a new faculty to their persona, they now, in addition to their other five senses, perceive all human life forms as points of light. Which, at least at first, is quite overwhelming. They actually see these points of light through walls and over distance. This makes for a very unique experience. Many are able to distinguish moods and quality of the “light’s” life. Like if they are agitated, calm, severely disturbed…etc.

The story begins with Amanda Nichols, a graphic artist saying goodbye to her father at Grand Central Terminal and going toward the subway to finish her commute…when she is attacked by a wild eyed crazy man with a knife. She has an OBE (watches her body as people try to help her), as well as NDE (including seeing her long passed grandmother and a favorite uncle) and just as she touches the light is brought back by a defibrillator. The experiences are well written and very graphically interesting.

Mr. Kassan then jumps to Atlantic City, NJ two years prior to Amanda’s attack, as gangster head Carlos Herrera is shot and also has the OBE/NDE experience and is brought back with the extra faculty.

We hop back to Amanda as she awakens in the hospital with her husband Chris, an artist and her mother and father nearby watching over her. She struggles to understand the overwhelming “lightpoints” faculty without disclosing what she’s seeing to anyone else for now. She also found a new sensation when she kissed her husband, a strange tingling in her lips which made her break the kiss off.

The story begins alternating between Amanda’s recovery and Herrera’s recovery. We begin to discover the way they perceive the “lightpoints” and the different senses they gain from them. I’m not going to do a lot of spoilers, just try to explain the direction of the story. I will tell you it’s interesting even fascinating as Mr. Kassan weaves a tale of the most unusual.

As they become aware of their new faculty, and the dangers it presents. It seems they can absorb another person’s life force or energy by kissing and in some cases laying hands on them. This can be done is small doses that leave a person in a trancelike state that makes them a virtual slave, with no memory of what happened when they wake up. However, if they sustain the contact, they can actually kill the person by absorbing all their live energy. On the other side of the coin, they can gather energy from a crowd (like a dance club) and share it with a kiss. This means that it is possible to give energy to save a person’s life, as in the case of a heart attack.

There are many others, but not everyone who has a NDE has the faculty. Resuscitation has to happen precisely as they touch the light, but not join with it…for the person to come back with the faculty. Kassan explores many more people who use the faculty for good and those who explore the darker side of it. There is the way it also changes the person’s life and makes it hard to relate to a spouse in the same way as before the accident.
Amanda and Chris come to this point and decide to try to bring Chris to the point of OBE/NDE and back so he can obtain the same faculty and he and Amanda can be happy and complete again. Using friends they have made with the faculty, Lisa and her doctor husband John (both having the faculty – another tale) they accomplish their goal seemingly with relative safety.

Okay, I’m not giving anything else away! I know, I’m so bad! LOL. You really must read this story for yourself to appreciate the intricacy of each story as well as the danger and suspense of when the good and bad clash.

The ending left me wanting more…much more! I want to know more of what happens and more stories. I hope this is the beginning of a series, because there were unfinished tales and I really want to know where they lead. I found Lightpoints an excellent read and would like to have much more of this marvelously thrilling subject.

Peter Kassan

TRC: Hi Peter and welcome to The Reading Café. We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow Peter: Website / BlogGoodreads

Peter: What can I say about myself? I’m a formerly young man. I began seriously writing fiction in my twenties, but I got a bit distracted along the way—for about twenty or thirty years.

TRC: Your website bio states you have had a number of careers, one way or another, in the field of writing. What has been your most memorable experience?

Peter: My most memorable experience as a writer was getting a job at Children’s Television Workshop as a staff writer of a television show they were developing. I had hoped to get a job writing for The Electric Company, which I loved, but there were no openings. I was given a chance to write an audition script for a new—here comes a mouthful you’ve never heard before—adult comedy variety health education show. I had a wonderful time writing the script and I got the job. I thought writing for a CTW show was going to be my dream job, but it was probably the worst job of my life. Although I worked with many wonderful people, I didn’t get along with my boss, the head writer, and that made it a nightmare. The show was reviewed in Time Magazine as the most dismaying new show of the season, and I was let go along with many others on the writing staff. It was both a terrible disappointment and a great relief.

Lightpoints

TRC: Lightpoints is your latest release. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Peter: The premise is that, under very rare circumstances, ordinary people discover themselves endowed with a new sense. I’d always been intrigued by the question of how one could explain vision to someone who had been born blind or hearing to someone who had born deaf. I had the challenge as a writer of convincingly conveying a faculty that none of us actually has—and the equal challenge of writing how my protagonist, Amanda, tries to explain it to herself and others.

TRC: How were you able to keep your plotline unpredictable without sacrificing content or believability?

Peter: In a novel such as Lightpoints, a reader’s willingness to accept the premise—to believe something unbelievable–is the ticket to admission to the ride. It’s my responsibility as a writer to be fair to my readers. Because, in a paranormal novel, people have powers no one actually has in real life, it’s too easy to invent a new supernatural ability whenever the protagonist needs to get out of a jam. So whenever I knew I needed Amanda to be able to do something in a later scene, I tried to lay the groundwork for it beforehand. Many times, that really meant going back and rewriting an earlier scene.

I tried to make the plotline unpredictable by exploring several different and apparently unrelated threads exploring how different people around the world made use of their new faculty. Only one of those threads converges with Amanda’s—to disastrous results.

TRC: Who or what was the inspiration behind the storyline?

Peter: I’ve always liked stories in which the writer explores how people would actually behave under unusual circumstances. I had had the idea of a new faculty that allowed people to perceive everyone else around them a while ago—actually, when I was working on that television show I told you about. It was just a vision—although that’s the wrong word, since the sense I imagined didn’t involve sight—of people somehow glowing or radiating energy. And other people being able to perceive that energy. But I didn’t have any idea what to do with this.

Many years later, I decided I wanted to write a paranormal novel, but I wanted to create a new kind of paranormal being that no one else had written about. I remembered my notion of a new sense that people don’t actually have. I quickly realized that, for the story to go anywhere, they would have to have more than just a sense—so I invented some powers people also acquired when they got the sense.

TRC: How much research (logistical, theoretical, philosophical, etc.,) was involved in the writing of Lightpoints?

Peter: It’s funny you ask that, because many years ago, before personal computers, the Internet, and the Web, I hated to do research. A long time ago, I decided to write a novel that took place during the Great Chicago Fire. I’d pack up a file box of index cards and drag myself to New York’s 42nd Street Library to do research. I’d find a book I wanted to look at, fill out a call slip, turn it in at the desk, and sit at one of the great tables to wait. It was incredibly boring, and all I wanted to do was put my head down and take a nap. I didn’t get very far with that project at all.

Years later, when I was writing about artificial intelligence, I found that, thanks to the Web, I loved doing research. If you needed a book, you could usually find it on Bookfinder.com for a few dollars. So when I wrote Lightpoints, I had no concerns. I’ve always been interested in and familiar with many of the subjects in the book, so I didn’t have to do any research ahead of time. As I wrote, if I discovered I needed more information, I’d just do a quick Internet search and continue writing. To be convincing, a writer doesn’t actually need to know much—all it takes is the right telling detail in the right place.
What part of the storyline was the most difficult to write and why?

In a story like Lightpoints, the protagonist must face an antagonist. Since my premise was that people with this faculty were extremely rare, the most difficult part of the storyline was to find a way for the antagonist to become involved with Amanda. I had to make several changes to the structure of the book before I was satisfied that their convergence was not only possible but plausible and convincing Then, once I had them meeting, the next most difficult problem to handle was how Amanda would overcome her antagonist. That, too, required several tries before I found a solution I was happy with.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series or is this a standalone storyline?

Peter: I have to admit that I don’t understand how people can know when they write one novel that it’s the first of a trilogy or a series. I find it hard enough to construct an engaging plot for one book. That said, when I wrote Lightpoints, I knew there was the possibility of other stories based on the same premise. As I saw it, I could either continue the story of the protagonist and other characters from Lightpoints or I could develop a story about entirely new characters who happened to have the same sense. I began working on a sequel about Amanda, but in a new situation and with a new bad guy. That’s on hold while I work on some other things—and until I find out whether readers want to read more about her.

TRC: What difficulties have you faced getting your novel to publication?

Peter: Before I found my publisher, Melange Books, I had sent query letters out to about a hundred literary agents. I got no responses of interest. (There actually are several websites devoted to the subject of writing good query letters, but getting the authors of those query-letter-critique websites to look at your query letter is about as difficult as getting an agent to read your novel.) I think that unless you’ve already famous or notorious, had something published (not self-published), have a personal connection, or can get a recommendation from someone like a professor of creative writing, the chances of a first novelist to be read by a reputable literary agent or a hardcover New York publisher are nil. Fortunately, my publisher found my query letter not totally uninteresting, and asked me to submit the manuscript. I’m now a first-reader for Melange, so I see how many manuscripts they have to look at to find ones worth publishing. I’m happy to have been a needle in that haystack.

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Peter: Well, I’m not a young man, so what I want most to accomplish in the next years is the next ten years. That said, I’d like to write a few more books.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Peter: I’ve been toying with an idea for a science fiction novel for young adults. I have a situation that I’m happy with and I have some notions about the protagonist and some other characters. Unfortunately, I don’t yet know what the protagonist’s predicament or what his goal is, so I don’t have a story yet.

I’m also working on a couple of other things. One of them is a sequel to a novel (in an entirely different genre) that was published recently under a pseudonym I’ve been using for a while. I’ve just started that one. The other is under a new pseudonym and also in another genre. I’ve written about thirty thousand words of that, but that one’s on hold because I don’t like the relationship between the two main characters and I need to find a different dynamic.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Peter: I find it ironic to be doing an author interview, because I used to believe that a writer should put everything you need to know to enjoy a novel into the novel itself, and that persona information about the author of a book should be irrelevant and might even be distracting. Of course, I insisted on that position even though I liked to read biographies and profiles of writers. If you like a book, it’s only natural you want to know about the person that wrote it. But the pseudonym I use for other writings uses only initials and not a first name, because I want my readers not to know whether the author is a man or a woman.

Monica Murphy – Interview and Giveaway with the Author

I recently experienced the emotional ride that is Drew + Fable and wanted to get to know the person behind the author Monica Murphy. One Week Girlfriend pulled at my heart; dragged several tears and tissues out of hiding; and had me wondering how many young men and women may be caught in the same horrifying nightmare.

Second Chance Boyfriend was released in April 2013 (the sequel to Drew + Fable) and with that the realization that ‘Karma is truly a b*tch’. The Reading Cafe would like to introduce MONICA MURPHY-the author of One Week Girlfriend and Second Chance Boyfriend.

TRC: You write under several different genres including New Adult, Contemporary Romance and Historical Romance. Which genre do you prefer to write and why?

Monica: I love writing all of them! What I like about writing in different subgenres is that I don’t get bored. I like changing it up. It’s fun. I haven’t written a historical in quite a while and I’m starting to miss it. I hope to get back to working on one next year.

TRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of your highly successful ONE WEEK GIRLFRIEND and SECOND CHANCE BOYFRIEND novels?

Monica: A hot football player asks a down on her luck townie to go to his parents’ house for Thanksgiving week and pretend to be his girlfriend for cash. But once they spend time together, they realize they have a lot more in common than they thought. And are soon falling for each other…completely.

TRC: The novels are a roller coaster of emotions, especially One Week Girlfriend with the traumatic revelations and Drew’s family disfunctionality. What or who influenced the storyline premise?

Drew and Fable

Links to Order SECOND CHANCE BOYFRIEND: Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

Monica: I saw a report on my local news about an attractive, young female teacher who was arrested for having sex with her student. Her excuse? She thought the 17 year old was really 18. It got me thinking, if that had been a male teacher and female student, she would’ve been treated as a victim who’d been completely violated by a trusted adult. When it comes to a male 17 year old who’s having sex with a teacher? It’s treated more like a notch on his bedpost. Like, ooh, he’s getting some with the hot teacher.

I hate that double standard. I wanted to create a male victim who doesn’t know how to react to what happened to him. That victim became Drew.

Fable’s been in my head since 2009. I tried to write a YA with her as the main character (a completely different version of Fable by the way) but it bombed spectacularly. She’s been lingering in my brain ever since. I knew she was the perfect match for Drew.

TRC: What challenges did you face (logistically, psychologically, research) in writing this series?

Monica: Drew’s story is tragically sad so that was hard at times. This is not a light and fluffy story but I did want to have as much hope infused in the book as possible. So that was difficult, trying to find that balance. Not to make it too heavy or too light. I didn’t want to make light of the subject matter either. I hope I didn’t. That was my biggest fear.

And I wanted to show that despite what a person has been through, ultimately, everyone deserves love and acceptance.

Logistically I’ve been to Carmel and the Monterey Bay (where Drew is from) many times. It’s truly one of my favorite places to go. It’s so beautiful and I guess I wanted to show that even in the beautiful places there’s ugliness.

The town where Fable lives and where Drew goes to college? I never name it but it’s totally based on where I lived and went to college, Chico, CA. In fact, I’ve had quite a few astute readers email me asking if I based it on Chico. Yep, I sure did.

TRC: Is there a message in the novel that you would like the readers to understand?

Monica: I try not to write a book with a message per say because I don’t want anyone to think I’m preaching at them. I will say that in regards to OWG and SCB, appearances are not always as they seem. Everyone thinks Drew’s life is perfect? Not even close.

TRC: Are the experiences in the book based on someone you know or events in your own life?

Monica: No, I made this entire story up in my head! I don’t know what that says about me but…LOL.

TRC: What part of the book(s) was the most difficult for you to write?

Monica: It was hard writing the reveal in OWG. The scene where Drew tells Fable what happened even though Fable pretty much already had it figured out. Heck, so did the readers but I wanted it to be that way. I wanted readers to know what happened but not want to face it you know? Like a bad car wreck you shouldn’t look at but do anyway.

TRC: Will we see more of Drew and Fable in upcoming storylines?

Monica: Absolutely! They’re appearing in the next two books of the (unnamed) series, especially FOUR YEARS LATER, which is Owen’s book. They’ll play a huge part in his book since they’re the ones who took over raising Owen once their mom took off.

TRC: Would you please tell us how you deal with the stress and anxiety of deadlines while trying to balance family life and writing?

Monica: Um, I freak out on occasion? LOL It’s so hard. I took on too much this year – writing as Monica was an unexpected experiment that turned into this amazing thing that completely changed my career. I’m still blown away by everything that’s happened!

My husband is a huge help. He stays at home and helps take care of the kids and the house. I couldn’t do this without him. He makes my life a LOT easier. I love that guy. 😉

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Monica: Currently I’m writing THREE BROKEN PROMISES, which is Jen and Colin’s story (Jen is Fable’s friend, Colin is Fable’s boss). It’s exciting to be back in this world but also nerve wracking. I hope readers respond as well to Jen and Colin as they did to Drew + Fable.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Monica: I’m thrilled that so many readers enjoy Drew + Fable’s story and I hope they love my new series I’m writing for Avon as well – the Billionaire Bachelors Club. The first book, CRAVE comes out in August.

I also want to thank all the readers, reviewers and bloggers for their continued support. I couldn’t do this writing thing without you all!

About the Book: Release April 2013

They thought the nightmare was over. Intern Jill Raney and the man she loves, obstetrical resident David Levine, barely escaped death at the hands of a madman on the steep roof of an old part of the hospital. The awful scene, captured by overhead news choppers, became a media obsession, run horrifyingly over and over. Jill and David are now reluctant “celebrities” – and the targets of every wacko who wants to share in the attention.

Including a killer. Someone who begins venting his fury at their “fame” by his hideous assaults on women – assaults which Jill and David discover are also death threats to them, and to a 6-month-old baby who has yet to be born.

Their predator is clever. Haughty. Leaves cryptic “clues” to taunt them and the police, who are at a loss. He knows how to leave no physical evidence behind. No prints, no fibers, no eyewitnesses.

Jill and David must still return to their exhausting hospital duties, knowing that any psycho can just walk into a hospital. Friends beg David, who is a crack shot, to carry a gun, but he doesn’t. “What’s the use?” he asks. “A doctor’s back is always turned.”

Instead, Jill and David join forces to become detectives on their own, helping the police in ways that even forensics experts never imagined; working frantically to uncover an unspeakable secret that dooms their fate and that of a sweet-faced, unborn child…unless they can put an end to an obsessed killer’s twisted quest.

Review:

What to say…..what to say…………I am as a rule, normally, a romance reader. So, when I was approached about reading and reviewing this book, I was a bit skeptical when I realized that it is a suspense-thriller. Well, a lot, actually. But, I had already agreed to read it, so off to read I went…………. And, holy hell, what a read it was. Both this book, and the first, start from the first page and DOES.NOT.STOP……….. The suspense is continuous, to the point where I had to walk away for a bit. The subject matter is pretty brutal and, in my humble opinion, not for the faint of heart. Some may find it hard to read, due to said subject matter, BUT, if you can convince yourself (as I did) that this is FICTION, you will fly through the story.

Schneider has written her characters so well, that I felt that I actually knew them. Jill and David make a great team. The supporting characters are great as well, but to be honest, I did find myself getting a little confused as to who was whom and what they had contributed earlier, or if they had at all. I think that in itself may be a testament to how realistic this story seems. Having lots of friends and family that are doctors, nurses, etc., the scenes at the clinic and hospital played out before my eyes as I read the story.

As I said, some of the book is tough to read. But, I for one am glad that I did. I look forward to the next installment!!

Interview beige

TRC: Hi J.A. and welcome to The Reading Café. We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW J.A: Website / Goodreads/ Twitter/ Facebook

J.A.SchneiderJ.A.: I’m a former staffer at Newsweek. Words and story ideas are always teeming in my head – a crazy colorful place! I’m a wife, mother of two adult children, and I love thrillers and mysteries. Once a Liberal Arts major (French and Spanish Literature), I’ve become increasingly fascinated with medicine and forensic science. Been married for decades to a physician who loves explaining medical concepts which I interweave as I write. EMBRYO is my first ebook. Its sequel, EMBRYO 2: CROSSHAIRS, was released in early April 2013. We live in southern Connecticut.

TRC: Your bio states that you were a exchange student in Russia. Have you ever been back for a visit? If so, how have things changed since your days as a student?

J.A: Haven’t been back, but I know things have changed a lot. Actually I was part of a student exchange between the U.S. and Russia. It was fascinating, but the desire for return visits was stronger to France and Spain. I love both, the people of Spain especially. So warm!

TRC: How did a French Literature major with a minor in Spanish and Russian develop a love for writing medical mystery novels?

J.A.: Life evolves. French I started in the fifth grade, so, being lazy, I opted for a French major because it was familiar and I’d taken all those AP courses. THEN marriage, and decades of hearing medical talk, and the fact that amazing advances in medicine are made constantly… I became fascinated. Have always, always peppered my husband Bob with questions, getting increasingly fascinated. Have also done much volunteering in hospitals.

embryoThe idea for the first EMBRYO came like a lightening bolt when hearing a conversation between Bob (who did OB before switching to Cardiology), and an Ob/Gyn friend who was excited about IVF and its advances in curing diseases in utero. As an author who had already published fiction and non-fiction, I thought about all human discoveries – from fire to atomic energy – and the fact that they can be either good or very bad if they fall into the wrong hands. It was a thought that wouldn’t let go.

Speaking foreign languages is nice, but static. It doesn’t involve the always-new-discoveries excitement and fascination of something like medicine and forensic science.

J.A: I realized that the ending of Embryo created a new crisis…

In Crosshairs, that new crisis was “fame.” Embryo’s heart-stopping final scene has turned Jill and David into reluctant “celebrities” – and the targets of every nut job who wants to share in the attention. Awful, especially since any psycho can just walk into a hospital…

Jill and David must still return to their exhausting hospital duties.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

J.A.: Three. A trilogy. Then I’ll begin a Raney and Levine series which will continue with the same wonderful characters. Jill Raney and David Levine become physician-detectives (they already are in Embryo 2), like an updated Holmes and Watson. How so? In this post-CSI era, bad guys again have the advantage. They know how to leave no physical evidence behind. No prints, no fibers, no eyewitnesses. But Jill and David find ways to help police in ways that even forensics experts never imagined.

TRC: How much research (logistical, historical, medical etc) was involved in the writing of this series?

J.A.: Two previous trad pubbed novels involved a lot of research. They never felt “native, organic” to me, so they came out showing the strain. With the two Embryo books, however, it was easy and a joy. Bob is always near to ask questions as they arise. We both enjoy the process. Every conversation gives rise to another idea or exciting plot point (google Pseudomonas aeruginosa…yeeow). So the research was detailed, and often I’d hit the med books and research more deeply, but it basically was easy and helped the stories flow. I’m also very familiar with hospitals and the life, having accompanied Bob on his rounds, and volunteered.

TRC: Do your storyline characters speak to you and tell you the direction of the story or do you direct the characters?

J.A.: Oh, the characters lead! Especially Jill. She’s reckless and determined in addition to being smart and deeply caring. Her dangerous, against-orders ideas sometimes surprise even me, which is why I don’t use an outline. David and Jill bounce off each other, actually. There are places in Embryo 2 where David gets an idea and it terrifies Jill. So they bicker, but the interplay between them fuels the story – and is sometimes even funny.

TRC: I guess this question would be for your husband – what is his overall interpretation of the medical drama television series currently on the prime time line-up? Reality or closer to fiction?

J.A.: Closer to fiction, sometimes ridiculous and wrong. Actors mispronounce, hold their stethoscopes and X-rays backwards, their EKGs upside down, on and on. Similar to cop shows. Ask any cop how he feels about cop shows… “It’s not like that, I can’t watch that stuff!” they’ll say. Doctors don’t watch doctor shows, and cops don’t watch cop shows.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the major characters in this particular storyline, which actors or models would represent your ideal image?

J.A.: Hmm, someone gorgeous and sexy for David. Jill, I don’t know…

TRC: Many authors face challenges in writing or getting their books to publication. What are some of the difficulties your have faced in your writing career?

J.A.: In the past, with traditional publishers, I had a non-fiction book orphaned by first one editor and then her replacement getting laid off. The economy has decimated publishing houses, including their publicity people. I love the freedom of indie publishing. The one challenge remaining is promotion, but that now applies to trad pubbed authors too. The big houses just don’t promote any more. Except I see them on Twitter too; what a hoot.

TRC: How do you handle (the combination of) the pressure and stress of a deadline and, family life at home?

J.A.: It used to be very, very hard when my children were small. Now that they’re grown and adults out in the world, life and writing are easier. (See? All you have to do is wait twenty years.) Other things still intervene, interrupt, but it’s still hugely easier. And with indie publishing there really aren’t any deadlines, except self-imposed, right?

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

J.A.: Just keep writing, faster and better than ever. I’d love to see a “Raney and Levine” TV series.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

J.A.: Embryo 3

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

J.A.: One of my favorite quotes from the book: A surgical resident friend tells David, “Take the gun! Even cops can’t depend on cops!” That surgical resident is from Houston, where a resident was shot and killed in the E. R. He’s obsessed, correctly, that no cop or hospital security guy can shoot until after violence happens.

The ramblers are thugs, climb 30 feet up to our house’s second floor. Gorgeous in June-July, but I spend too much time on a ladder. Their thorns are the size of bird-of-prey talons and tear right through my shirtsleeves. People see my scratches and ask if we keep big cats.

Do Readers Matter?

Hello, everyone! Thank you so much for visiting me on The Reading Café today!

I’m an author. You probably figured that with the fact that I have a book coming out next week. And as an author, there’s one thing that’s often on my mind. Want to take a guess? Do you think it’s plot? Characters? Story arcs? Conflict? Yes—all of those. But did you know that some writers think about readers almost as much as they think about the elements of writing?

Shadowslayers

Is that weird? I don’t think so. Because readers matter.

And it’s not just because readers are the people who buy our books and with their purchases determine whether an author can make a living at writing or simply pursue it as something fun on the side. They matter because without readers, stories aren’t truly alive.

ReadingI was talking to a friend last week (And her name rhymes with Lisa Kessler. Okay, I’m not fooling you. Her name really is Lisa Kessler.), and she mentioned something that really impacted me. Lisa said, “No matter how much I love a book I’ve written, it doesn’t truly come alive until someone reads it. The readers breathe the life into the book… It’s magic!” And when I heard that, I realized how true it was for me as well.

I love writing. I love telling stories and creating worlds. I know I should want to write even if no one reads my work. But the truth is, sharing my stories with readers, hearing what they think, it’s my greatest honor and my greatest thrill.

Even when it comes to reviews—which some writers insist an author shouldn’t read for her own mental well-being—I can’t help but be invested and want to know what a reader thinks. I try not to let reviews change my future story arcs too much, but if I see a pattern that several people have pointed out, am I willing to fix it? Absolutely! Why, you ask? Because I feel like the readers and I are in this together. We’re both invested. If I cut myself off from caring just to avoid the pain of the occasional bad review, I’m also cutting myself off from one of my greatest sources of joy.

KeyboardThis past month several readers have really encouraged me just by being enthusiastic about my work. I wish there was a way to tell them how much it means without being too cheesy or looking like I was trying to get them to buy the next book. So what I want to say is simply this: Thank you, Readers. You matter. You really, really do.

As an extra thank you, comment below to be entered to win one of two free digital copies of my upcoming release, Dark Flight—Book 3 in the spicy urban fantasy Shadow Slayer series.

Virtual hugs all around, and I hope to connect with you soon on Facebook or Twitter!

Sandy James-Guest Post and Giveaway

Guest Post and Giveaway with author Sandy James

Guest Post-White and Aqua

Thanks to the Reading Café for letting me guest on their wonderful blog today!

I’m heading a bit controversial for this post. I want to talk about being a teacher and writing romance.

Couple Making LoveSome of you might be aware of the story of Judith Buranich. She’s an English teacher in Pennsylvania public high school. When a few parents discovered she was published in erotic romance, a witch hunt ensued, and she was threatened with termination by the school corporation. (When I checked for updated information, I discovered she overturned her firing on appeal. Good for her!)

I followed the story with fear and fascination, wondering if one day my name would be the one splashed all over the news for writing “that stuff.” (That’s a quote from one of the parents, who also implied Ms. Buranich might be looking at her son in an inappropriate fashion. For the love of… I cannot think of a more ridiculous insinuation.)

My first thought was that if a teacher wrote any other genre, would they pursue her with such vigor? What if she wrote true crime novels—one of the genres I’ve considered with my criminology degree? Would they assume she might have serial killer tendencies?

Obviously, I was worried about my own job in a public high school. I’ve taught psychology for eighteen years, and I love my job. When I wrote my first book, my son was a senior at my school. I watched all of his friends grow up, and I’ve always been very close to those kids. Being an extrovert, I shared with my students that I was having fun writing. They were supportive and a bit in awe that I not only finished that book but went on to make writing my second career. A lot of them love that I use their names for some of my characters.

Pen on KeyboardWhen I sold my first book, I went to my principal and explained that I really wanted to publish in my own name rather than using a pen name. But I did air my concerns that our rather conservative Indiana community might have a “problem” if the parents found out I wrote romance. I told him that there was nothing in the books I would be ashamed for my students to read—probably because I discuss human sexuality in psychology. I was comfortable with parents reading my books as well. After a discussion with our superintendent, my principal gave me his blessings. So I published Turning Thirty-Twelve under my real name. Then I preceded to publish ten more books with more on the way. Both my students and their parents have given me their encouragement, and several former students and parents have become my fans.

Flash forward to 2012. Our state has instituted a rather onerous method of evaluating teachers—something I’m sure many other teachers face in the day and age of kids being tested, tested, and tested some more to see if they’re learning. (Don’t even get me going on that!) We are observed at least five different times during the school year. While I have no problem with any administrator or parent coming into my room to see what I’m up to, I am aware that even good teachers have bad days. It’s just crappy luck if one of those unannounced visits is on one of those days. My first one was…

I’m a good teacher. I don’t say that with hubris. My students are the ones who enlightened me to that fact. They do so in their stellar performances on things like Advanced Placement exams and by telling me how easy college psychology is for them because of my classes. But on the day my boss came for a look-see, I was playing a review game much like Jeopardy with my students, and it didn’t go well. The kids weren’t highly motivated because it was close to Fall Break, so a couple of them—one immature kid in particular—were acting out. Suffice to say I got a bad evaluation, even though I did my best to correct the bad behavior.

Alliiance of the Amazons

Problem was that my fear of being fired from my job for writing romance novels immediately jumped into my thoughts. Was my evaluation bad because of the class clown being mouthy? Or was there something else going on? Was this going to become a pattern as those in power set up a plan to get rid of me because I write romance?

It’s a shame I even have to worry about something that silly, but I was worried. Really worried. So I brought the topic up in my meeting over that evaluation. Thankfully, I was reassured that the thought never crossed my boss’s mind. In fact, he told me that they use me as a great example to students about what someone is capable of achieving if she puts her mind to it. He also said it’s good to be able to claim a published author among the school’s faculty.

Teacher at Chalk boardTo say I was relieved is a sad understatement. And all my evaluations have been stellar after that because the students realized it was their behavior rather than my lack of teaching skill that was criticized. God love ’em, my kids like me, and the affection is wholeheartedly returned.

Have things changed since the Judith Buranich debacle? Or is my corporation just more tolerant? I’m not really sure. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Thanks again for allowing me to guest blog! It was a pleasure sharing my thoughts with all of you!

My income tax return says that I am a teacher. I had originally intended it to say “lawyer,” but romance, marriage, and motherhood set my life on a different course.

Sandy JamesI’ve been married to Jeff James since 1983. Even after all these years, he is still the love of my life. Jeff and I have two grown children who make us proud every day.

My husband and I share another strong and wonderful interest that is not only a great part of our day-to-day lives but has also become a running theme throughout some of my books. We own a small racing stable of Standardbred Harness horses, pacers to be exact. We have always loved the sport and as our children grew up enough to have their own interests, Jeff looked into what it would be like to own a racehorse. We jumped into the sport with both feet and are loving every minute of it. I’ve added a link to Jeff’s website if you’d like to follow the progress of our horses.

As another bit of personal information, I’d like to share that several years ago I was diagnosed with lupus. I know that there are others out there who either have had the same diagnosis or know someone who has. I’m sharing this because I want to encourage you all that chronic illnesses do not have to keep you down and out of the swing of life. I still teach, still work with my horses, have a wonderful family life, and am still able to spend hours at my laptop writing on my latest book.

I am blessed to be leading a life full of the things I like to do and people I love.

Stairway2 Heaven by Chaz Thompson-Review and Interview with the Author

STAIRWAY 2 HEAVEN by Chaz Thompson- Review and Interview with the Author

Stairway2 Heaven

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release November 2012

In the 22nd century, a burned-out, fatalistic psychic is blackmailed into recovering a stolen formula that separates the soul from the human body. Cerebral, acerbic, wry, profane, Stairway2 Heaven examines the relationship between consciousness and corporate religion and personal spiritual empowerment.

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: STAIRWAY 2 HEAVEN is a sci-fi/futuristic fictional suspense novel that looks at the dirty side of corporate greed, big pharma and the philosophical/theological impact of separating the body and the soul. Whether you are a believer (or not) of all things spiritual or a version thereof, Stairway 2 Heaven will definitely make you think about the ‘what-ifs’ and ‘whys’ of the complicated Triad of big business, religion and medicine. And if you believe, you are like many skeptics, big business and medicine are inseparable and irrevocably connected to (and involved) in our daily lives.

The premise follows Matthias Chalmers, a retired psychic in the 22nd century and the fall-out of a research experiment gone horribly wrong–or right– depending on your view point, vantage or need. When Matthias’s twenty-nine year old son Lanier, a young man with Asperger’s Syndrome and a genius IQ ‘accidently’ separates his soul from his body while developing a new toothpaste for GORIS pharmaceuticals, Matt will become the pawn in a deadly quest for the ultimate prize.

The storyline is written from Matt’s POV covering various back and forth timelines and intersecting plots. We journey with Matt as he reflects on a lifetime of sins and the past indiscretions that got him to where he is today, all the while on the search for the elusive formula that has gone missing and presumably in the hands of someone close. With a price tag on his head and a target on his back, as well as threats against his family and friends, Matt will discover that even the Vatican is not exempt from the reaches of corporate greed and the possibility of life ever after-but the Vatican wants to destroy the procurer of the ultimate sin.

STAIRWAY 2 HEAVEN is awash in a philosophical and theological conundrum-if there is a way to separate the body from the soul, would you be willing to pay the ultimate price for a chance at a new life? Thompson’s writing pulls the reader into a storyline that will make you think about what really goes on behind the scenes of big corporations, medical research and the quest for the almighty dollar. Add organized religion and the Vatican-you have a story that will question the ideology of our society-who truly is in charge of our daily lives?

Stairway 2 Heaven reads like a movie-the reader is pulled into the fast paced action, the anger, the angst and the chase as Matthias Chalmers must find the stolen formula or face the possibility of his own death and the death of everyone he loves and knows. Chaz Thompson has written an amazing storyline that will fascinate as well as examine the possibilities of a pharmaceutical discovery that could change the concept of body, soul and life ever lasting.

TRC: Hi Chaz and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN. We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

FOLLOW: Goodreads / Facebook

Chaz Thompson 2012Chaz: Born in the very early ’50s I am now on the brink of retirement. I dropped out of high school in 1969 and literally joined the circus. Just one of those southern Californian, suburban street-corner Barnum and Bailey “mini” circuses, but a circus, nonetheless. They had me cleaning up after the elephants and I imagined a cinematic life of adventure. They promised me a place on the payroll if I showed up in the morning. I was seventeen. When I returned the following morning with my guitar, the street corner was vacant.

So I hitchhiked around, ended up in Wisconsin where I played clubs and pubs and the ever-familiar street-corner. When Disco arrived it killed my folk-singing, songwriting career, so I took a job as a clerk at the Madison Capitol building. This introduced me to graphics and I spent the next thirty years as a graphic artist.

Tell me when to stop. I married twice, fathered a handful of children (whom I adore to this day) and left graphics for a career in Real Estate at the exact moment of our recent economic meltdown. Hello customer service.

Along the way, I began writing screenplays and short stories and novels, and when the Self-Publishing boom developed I eagerly took advantage of the opportunity. Which brings us to today.

Stairway2 HeavenTRC: STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN is your latest release. A sci-fi, dystopian look at the 22nd century. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

Chaz: I understand STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN gets classified as dystopian, but I don’t really see it that way. I neither praise nor condemn our social future, and try to represent it as a mish-mash of advancements and setbacks. I chose the future simply because I wanted to control the environment in which this mystical event could occur.

TRC: Who or what was the inspiration for Stairway2 Heaven- the novel?

Chaz: About thirty years ago I wrote a short story called “Concrete Eden” which contained some of the basic plot elements and the focus of the soul becoming disengaged from the human body. Since I wrote many, many short stories, it got lost in the drawer with the rest. Back when Geocities was popular I dug out the story of the “soul-stealer” and posted it, but it wasn’t until early 2012 that I stumbled upon it and decided to flesh out the characters. I’ve studied mysticism and physics off and on, and found the premise ideal for combining my own observations on the two. I came up with a suitable ending and voila!

The title is actually a tongue-in-cheek formula that reads Stairway(squared) equals Heaven. The Stairway(squared) represents the link between our daily experience and our connection with divinity. It also implies it’s a two-way street, a notion frowned upon by most established religions.

TRC: What research challenges or difficulties (logistical, medical, theologian) did you encounter when writing this particular novel?

Chaz: Research was a combination of what I had studied on the subjects of mysticism and physics prior to writing the story, and acquiring knowledge of Europe for the events that took place there, specifically Italy, since I have never traveled overseas. I will be eternally grateful for YouTube and Wikepedia. I am inherently an impatient writer, so the challenge was to patiently describe the environments in a manner that would engage the reader and not slow down the narrative.

TRC: If you gave your leading character Matthias an opportunity to speak for himself, what would he have to say?

Chaz: Matthias Chalmers is a very jaded, fatalistic individual, but by the end of the story he has come to a place where he has to admit that if Life doesn’t always make sense, at least we do have some sense of control, whether we admit to it or not. And his basic summary of his experience are the final words of the novel. However, he might address the world at large with these words: “I love you all, but leave me alone.”

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about the storyline premise?

Chaz: That I am anti-Christian. Whereas I am certainly suspicious of the true motives of most corporate religions, every living consciousness deserves to benefit or suffer according to their own choices, physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually. I would never dream of encouraging anyone to abandon their commitment to their church or temple or whatever based on my personal beliefs. The events in STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN reflect a dramatic fiction meant to represent ideals and concepts.

TRC: Many authors bound ideas and information with other authors or family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Chaz: My wife and a select collection of very twisted friends. And the secret society of personalities between my ears.

TRC: What five things would you like to accomplish in the next ten years?

Chaz: My goals are very generic, looking out ten years. Fundamental happiness through the experience of success, expression of creativity, and love. Specifically, I hope to achieve these through writing and my personal relationships.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception about yourself?

Chaz: That I am secretive, anti-social even.

TRC: If you could select one reality show in which you were one of the contestants, which show would you choose and why?

Chaz: Oh, I loathe reality programs. The best reality show is out my window. The thing is, a window is a two-way portal.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Chaz: My next novel is the story of the relationship between two prostitutes, one of them has an ability which can only be described as paranormal (there I go being secretive again), and the other woman is homicidal.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Chaz: STAIRWAY2 HEAVEN is my attempt to offer a unique concept to anyone brave enough to read the story. I recommend no specific doctrine of knowledge or behavior, just the willingness and enthusiasm to venture toward new ideas, to expand deliberately.
