REVIEW: WALK THE LINE is the twelfth and final instalment in J. Kenner’s contemporary, adult MAN OF THE MONTH erotic, romance novella series focusing on a fund raiser for the popular Austin, Texas bar known as The Fix. This is The Fix’s co-owner and single father, thirty-three year old Brent inclair, and twenty-four year old, grad student Elena Johnson’s story line. WALK THE LINE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary although I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion.

SOME BACKGROUND: The Fix on Sixth, a local Austin hangout and bar, is in desperate need of renovations and a quick influx of cash so a plan is put into motion, by a group of regulars, a plan that includes a Man of the Month calendar competition, a recipe book, and a reality show aimed at rehabbing the bar.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Brent and Elena) WALK THE LINE follows the building relationship between Brent Sinclair, and grad student Elena Johnson. As the daughter of his business partner, Elena was off-limits as far as Brent was concerned. The single father to five year old Faith, Brent focused all of his attention on his daughter believing he had no time for the ‘non-essential’ aspects of his life, including a relationship-been there, done that, and has the emotional scars to prove it. But when Faith’s babysitter is unable to fulfill her responsibilities, a newly-unemployed Elena Johnson is perfect for the job. What ensues is the building romance and love between Elena and Brent, and the potential fall-out as Brent begins to have second thoughts about his future, and that of the woman with whom he will fall in love.

WALK THE LINE is the culmination of twelve instalments that focus on the rehabbing of The Fix on Sixth; and the struggle to stay one step ahead of an unknown enemy that is quickly escalating threats against the bar. Most of the previous story line couples play secondary and supporting roles (if only by way of mention). Here’s hoping the author advances the series a few years wherein we catch up with all of the couples, as well as Tyree’s son Eli. The premise is fast paced and entertaining; the romance is quick to develop; the characters are colorful and passionate. My only complaint is the quick resolution to the threats against The Fix on Sixth-I was hoping for a little more interaction and detail.

Hoping to convince her parents that her ‘relationship’ with Matthew is the real thing, Hannah and Matthew offer up a fake engagement but to no avail. What ensues is the building romance between our leading couple, and the potential fall-out when Matthew doesn’t measure up to her parent’s expectations.

IN TOO DEEP is a quick read; a sexy and flirty, heart warming and inspiring tale about two people caught in a fantasy of lies. The premise is engaging; the romance is spicy; the characters are energetic and spirited. The story line ends without a satisfying resolution- I am hoping the author has plans for a more complete happily ever after.

REVIEW: SHAKE IT UP is the eighth instalment in J. Kenner’s contemporary, adult MAN OF THE MONTH erotic, romance novella series focusing on a fund raiser for the popular Austin, Texas bar known as The Fix. This is thirty-six year old, police detective Landon Ware, and twenty-four year old work-study university student Taylor D’Angelo’s story line. SHAKE IT UP can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary although I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion.

SOME BACKGROUND: The Fix on Sixth, a local Austin hangout and bar, is in desperate need of renovations and a quick influx of cash so a plan is put into motion, by a group of regulars, a plan that includes a Man of the Month calendar competition, a recipe book, and a reality show aimed at rehabbing the bar.

NOTE: SHAKE IT UP is a bit of a departure from the series in that most of the events and story line are not directly connected to the Man of the Month competition and celebrations but focuses on the threats against, and protection of, our story line heroine.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Taylor and Landon) SHAKE IT UP picks up shortly after the events of book seven TURN ME ON. Working on her Master’s Degree in film study Taylor D’Angelo finds herself a part of the promotional crew at The Fix on Sixth. A recent spate of barely veiled threats against our story line heroine forces Taylor to reveal a potential problem for the crew, their friends and family, and ultimately herself. Enter police detective Landon Ware, and the man with whom Taylor will fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship between Taylor and Landon, and the possible fall-out as the threats against Taylor become more personal and life-threatening.

SHAKE IT UP focuses on the search for a stalker. Taylor suspects the who and why but is reluctant to reveal the entire story. Landon struggles with his attraction to the woman he has chosen to protect, a woman who has starred in all of his fantasies since the first time they met.

The world building continues to follow the Man of the Month fund raising efforts for The Fix on Sixth but takes a back seat to the events of the past few story lines. The premise is intriguing and engaging; the romance is seductive and intense-there is a definite palpable sexual attraction between our leading couple. The characters are colorful, dynamic and charismatic. SHAKE IT UP is a fast paced, energetic and impassioned tale.

Neither one looking for a permanent relationship but an unspoken commitment for the foreseeable future finds Derek and Amanda agreeing to a once –monthly meet up when Derek comes to town. As the months pass, they will each reconsider their ‘casual’ arrangement as they struggle with jealousy, resentment and loneliness in the absence of one another. Who doesn’t love a crossover? I know that for me there’s always been something magical about two fictional words blending and meeting in a totally unexpected way. For years the only medium that has truly done it well and often is comic books. Superman vs. Batman in a fight to the finish. Marvel’s Infinite Universe. There’s something about two crazy worlds coming together that almost makes them feel more real. Like there’s this brilliant universe filled with fictional characters and they can meet and talk, and sometimes they can fall in love.

I’m a geek. I go a little crazy when Thor meets up with Iron Man or The Flash and Arrow team up.

So why wouldn’t we do it in Romanceland?

There are ways out there. A writer can write in another author’s world, giving you her take on it. There’s some brilliant fanfiction out there, but I wanted something different. I wanted to take my time and gradually introduce these characters from other worlds, bring you in slowly so you don’t even realize what I’m doing. So you think this is McKay-Taggart, nothing odd here. Except there is…

Told from dual third person perspectives ( Talia and Shane) HIS TO PROTECT focuses on the protection of scientist Dr. Talia Shaw. With the development of a new heart drug on the horizon our heroine is targeted for the formula by an unknown source. Desperate for help, she calls her brother Tate, who calls in a favour from his childhood friend. Enter McKay-Taggart bodyguard Shane Landon, and the man with whom Talia will fall in love. What ensues is a cross-country road trip wherein our couple find themselves in the direct line of fire, as the struggle to stay one step ahead of the people intent on taking them down.

The relationship between Talia and Shane is one of second chances, of sorts. Talia has been in love with her brother’s best friend for most of her life but Shane has kept his distance in respect of his best friend’s younger sister. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense.
