An Interview with Jennifer Ashley

An Interview with Jennifer Ashley

The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome the fabulous Jennifer Ashley as our guest today.

Jennifer just released Mate Claimed, her newest book in her Shifters Unbound series.  We posted our review of Mate Claimed yesterday.

Let’s begin our interview with Jennifer

Jennifer, we at the Reading Café would like to thank you for taking the time to answer our questions. We are always looking forward to learning more about the author behind the book.

Jennifer: It’s great to be here. Thank you!

TRC:  We would like to start with some background information.  Would you please tell us about yourself?

Jennifer: I love to write. 🙂 I also like to travel and explore new places. I was lucky to grow up living in various places around the world. Then I married an army man, and went to more places around the world. While other wives seemed fearful of venturing off the US posts and bases, I jumped aboard trains to see where they’d take me. I haven’t been everywhere I want to go (I got busy, sadly), but I have been able to see many countries in Europe and Asia just by wandering through them. I strongly advise travelers to venture off the well-trod tourist paths (carefully in some areas, I realize). You see far more and learn much more about real life, history, and people when you wander.

I now live in the beautiful Sonoran desert of the Southwestern US and wouldn’t trade it for the world.

TRC:  When and how did you first become interested in writing?  What was your first book ever published?

Jennifer: The first book I ever got published was Perils of the Heart, a book I sold to Leisure / Dorchester. It was an obscure midlist book, but it did well enough to let me have another contract, and away we went.

I love Perils, a humorous high-seas adventure about a shy governess who gets caught in an evil pirate’s plans, and the handsome ship’s captain whom she’s sent to distract and seduce. Evangeline has no idea how to seduce a man, but she fears for her brother’s life if she doesn’t. Unfortunately, Captain Blackwell sees through her attempts and slaps her into the brig.

I had a lot of fun writing that book. I decided to stop trying to follow the romance “rules” and just go for it. And lo and behold, I finally got published (after six other romances that got nothing but rejections).

I have written stories all my life, since the tender age of eight, and fortunately was encouraged by my parents, teachers, and friends. Took a lot of hard work and figuring out how to write a “real” book and get it published by a New York publisher, but I finally did it.

TRC:  Besides Jennifer Ashley, you also write under the names of Ashley Gardner and Allyson James.  As Jennifer Ashley, you write Historical Romances/Paranormal; as Ashley Gardner, you write more Urban Fantasy/Paranormal; and as Allyson James, you have written more erotic series such as Tales of the Shareem and Stormwalker.  How do you keep each separate? What are the challenges in doing so?

Jennifer: It’s easy for me to keep each separate, because the characters and situations are unique to each one. When I’m in one world, I’m not thinking about any of the others. I can immerse myself.

The greatest challenge is getting everything done!

This year alone I’ve written four full-length novels, two half-length novels, and one novella, revised and released three backlist books, and I still have two half-length novels to write before the end of the year. And still readers tell me I don’t write fast enough!

TRC:  Which genre do you prefer to write and which is the most difficult?

Jennifer: I like all the genres I write (paranormal, historical, mystery, urban fantasy, erotic romance). Each gives me something new and different to explore, and keeps me fresh when I return to the other genres. I have always loved historicals—that’s what I originally set out to write, and those storylines come to me most easily.

Erotic romance is the most difficult to write. The stories need to be emotional, sensual, sexy . . . without becoming tedious, repetitive, or just plain stupid. Love scenes can cross the line from sensual to boring very quickly, and it’s a lot of work to make sure they don’t.

TRC:  What is your process in writing?  Any specific place you like to write or special times of the day/night?

Jennifer: I like to start the day writing while I’m eating breakfast at a bakery / coffee house. I can get a lot of writing done there for some reason. Then I return home and spend most of the day writing. I sit on my sofa with a laptop—writing at a desk hurts my back. Sometimes I’ll go out to another coffee house if I find myself getting too distracted by stuff going on at home. That’s about it. Butt in chair, fingers on keyboard, cushion at back. 🙂

TRC:  Can you please tell us the premise of Shifters Unbound series?

Jennifer: Shifters Unbound is about shapeshifters who have revealed themselves to the world, only to be rounded up and made to live in Shiftertowns, and wear Collars (half Fae magic, half technology) that spike pain into them if they turn violent. Humans believe they have Shifters tamed, but Shifters, who were dying out in the wild, are using their captivity to grow stronger.

Shifters are very family oriented, valuing mates and cubs above all else. The sexy male Shifters will do anything to protect their own.

TRC:  Mate Claimed is the latest book in that series, which was released the other day, October 2nd.  Can you please tell us a little about the story?  How many books do you plan for this series?

Jennifer: Eric Warden knows that half-Shifter wildcat Iona is passing for human, living without a Collar in the human world. He also knows that if she does not acknowledge her Shifter nature and her mating hunger, it could kill her.

Eric has a lot on his plate, though. Another Shiftertown has closed, and those Shifters are being stuffed into Eric’s town. The leader, an alpha Lupine called Graham, makes it clear he wants to take over. Eric needs Iona to help stop him.

Iona finds the mysterious and dangerous Eric, a wildcat and leader of his Shiftertown, haunting her dreams, but she vows never to take the Collar, fearing backlash against her mother and sister for hiding the fact that she’s Shifter. But Eric is a compelling Shifter male, and Iona’s hunger calls to him.

TRC:
Highland Pleasures is another one of your successful series. The Duke’s Perfect Wife came out in April, 2012, which we reviewed.  January, 2013 is the release date of the next book in the series, The Seduction of Elliot McBride.  For those who have not read about your wonderful Mackenzies, can you please tell us about this series?  Is there an end in sight?….Hopefully not anytime soon.

Jennifer: The Mackenzie brothers (and son / nephew) are a highly dysfunctional Scottish family in the Victorian age—they are decadent, rich, scandalous, talked about, and they don’t care.

The family is led by Hart Mackenzie (the duke of Duke’s Perfect Wife), followed by Cameron (a womanizer who owns and trains racehorses), Mac (an artist whose attachment to alcohol made his wife Isabella leave him), and Ian, the youngest, who spent time in an asylum. (Ian has Asperger’s Syndrome, though at the time there was no name for it.)

Then there’s Daniel, Cameron’s son, who’s a teenager during the first four books, but will grow up and have his own book next year. He’s an inventor, loving to tinker with his machines when he’s not seducing beautiful women. Then he meets a lady who turns all his assumptions upside down.

The McBrides (in The Seduction of Elliot McBride), are the brothers of Ainsley, the heroine of Cameron’s book.

Elliot McBride was captured and imprisoned for ten months while living in India, tortured and starved before he escaped. He’s now fighting PTSD (another condition not understood at the time), and has decided that buying his great-uncle’s rundown house in Scotland and marrying the woman he’s loved since childhood is the answer to his madness. Too bad the young lady (Juliana) is about to walk up the aisle to marry another man . . .

Elliot’s story is a spinoff, but I hope everyone likes it.

This Christmas, though, I plan to release a short novel, A Mackenzie Family Christmas, which I’ll be putting out on my own. This will be an Ian / Beth story, but all the Mackenzies will return, as well as some of the spinoff characters.

I’ll do at least another 3-4 full-length books, and 3-4 short novels / novellas.

TRC:  As Allyson James, you have a new Stormwalker book out (Nightwalker).  How many books do you plan for this series?  Also for Tales of Shareem, any new books coming out in that series?

Jennifer: Nightwalker
is finally out, I am pleased to say. I plan several more books for this series, including shorter novels. The Tales of the Shareem will wrap up in one or two more books. I never say it’s over, though. If I have ideas, I’ll do more stories
.

TRC:  As Ashley Gardner, you have just written your 8th book in the Captain Lacey Regency series, A Disappearance in Drury Lane.  Would you like to tell us the premise of this series, and how many books do you plan?

Jennifer: These are not lighthearted, frothy Regencies! 🙂 They show both sides of Regency London—the elegant ballrooms and the dirty backstreets.

Gabriel Lacey is a cavalry captain who’s come home from the Peninsular Wars and lives on half pay in London. His father, a landed gentlemen, lost most of his money before he died, so Lacey is poor and has only a rundown house in Norfolk to his name.

While walking through Hanover Square one day, he gets caught in a commotion and discovers a distraught father convinced that one of the respectable gentlemen in the square has abducted his daughter.

Lacey gets involved, and soon becomes entangled in a dark, underworld crime, complete with a crime boss, James Denis. With the help of his friend Lucius Grenville (a wealthy man-about-town) and a street girl (Black Nancy), Lacey solves the crime.

A romance arc develops in the series starting in Book 2. I am working on book 8, and plan at least a dozen. Ideas keep coming to me, darn it.

TRC:  What are you working on now?  Any new series on the horizon?

Jennifer: Working feverishly on all my series. There will be more of what I’m already doing, but I’d love to start something new. I’m hankering toward contemporary romance or an out-and-out suspense / thriller.

TRC:  Who is your Muse?

Jennifer: Anything beautiful. Musicians who can really play. Art. Great writing / storytelling. Miniatures. 🙂

TRC:  Your websites showcasing your miniature worlds is amazing.  How do you do these beautiful dollhouses?  How do you find the time to work on the miniature worlds with all of the book you write?

Jennifer: Thank you! I love minis. I’m nowhere near as good at it as the artisans out there, but I enjoy myself. I collect pieces, build from scratch or from kits, and just play.

How do I find time? Good question! I make the time. I find that working on minis, which means working with my hands, is a good way to take a brain break, work out a plot point, just step away from the keyboard for a while. No computers involved.

TRC:  Would you like to add anything else?

Jennifer: Thank you so much for taking time to interview me, and readers for taking time to read my books. You’re awesome!

LIGHTNING ROUND:

FAVORITE FOOD: Cheese.

FAVORITE DESSERT:  Butterscotch pudding

MILK OR DARK CHOCOLATEDark!

FAVORITE BOOK: Oh. Um. Uh. I don’t know. I love too many!

WHAT BOOK ARE YOU CURRENTLY READING: Two: The Bourne Identity and The Widow of Larkspur Inn (two very different books, I must say!)

Mate Claimed by Jennifer Ashley – a Review

Mate Claimed by Jennifer Ashley – a Review

MateClaimed by Jennifer Ashley, is the latest book in her Shifters Unbound series.  I love this series, and couldn’t wait for this book.

For those of you are not familiar with the Shifters Unbound series, here is a brief description:

This takes place in a futuristic world, where shifters of all types are delegated to live in their own small towns, and not mingle too closely with humans.  When they came out and announced themselves to the world over 20 years, they were forced to wear collars to control their violent animalistic tendencies, thereby making humans feel safe around them.  But slowly, shifters are finding ways around the collars, as you saw if you read my Pride Mates review.

Review:

In Mate Claimed, Eric Warden is the alpha of his shiftertown in Las Vegas. We have met Eric in the previous books, as he was a visitor to the Morrissey pack in Austin, and is Cassidy’s brother from Wildcat.  We knew that Eric was sure to be in this book, as he met Iona in the last.  I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy Eric, as much as I adored Liam and Sean in the first two books.  But wow, Jennifer Ashley has done it again, Eric is totally awesome.

Iona Duncan is our heroine, whom we met in Wildcat.  Iona is half human and half shifter, and has never known her shifter father.  She has secretly hid herself as fully human, never revealing her shifter side, and never wearing a collar.  She lives with her human mother and sister, who all run a construction business.  Eric, having met Iona at a shifter bar, awhile ago, keeps his eye on her.  He knows she is a half shifter, and knows that she will be going through her mating frenzy soon.  Iona, of course, avoids Eric like the plague, and wants nothing to do with the shifters.  She does not want to endanger her human lifestyle and her freedom.  On many nights, Iona goes to the woods to shift into her panther to run. Eric, who has been watching, joins her in his Snow Leopard form.  They play, chase and frolic, having fun, which is something Iona never allowed herself to do.  Slowly, she begins to realize that Eric is right;  her mating frenzy will take control, and put her life in danger, or she will go feral.

You see right away, how much Eric is becoming obsessed with Iona.  She tries to fight off the attraction, though unsuccessfully.  The chemistry between them sizzled, and when they finally gave in to their lust, the steamy hot sex almost melted the pages. They were great together, even though at first Iona fought off Eric’s attempt to protect her from a Lupine Alpha named Graham, who decided he wanted Iona, just to hurt his enemy Eric.

Eric takes Iona to stay with him in his shiftertown, and she gets to meet all his family, friends, and pack members.

Besides this growing romance, and a wonderful one with Eric and Iona, there was a mystery to be solved.  Graham, came across early, as a jerk, and you hoped Eric would teach him a lesson.  But in time, he is redeemed somewhat, as he helps Eric defend the shifters against a secret experiment being done on shifters.  Some of these experiments go back over 20 years, and Eric’s nightmares come full force, as he remembers those early days when shifters were forced to put on the collar.  This was a great mystery, with a lot of action, excitement, danger, with all our favorites working together to find the answers.

I enjoyed seeing Diego, and Cassidy with their new born baby.  Ashley has developed some great secondary characters that we hope to hear more about, like Jace, Reid, Graham, and Tiger, whom we will see more of in the next book.

This was a great continuation of this series, with lots of action, mystery, super hero and heroine.  But best of all, I loved the wonderful romance between Eric and Iona.  There was such a caring and giving side that Eric showed Iona, and what he did for her, was beautiful to see. As much as I loved Liam and Kim, they have been equaled with Eric and Iona.  Don’t miss this book and if you have not read this series, it’s time for you to do so.

HARD MATED (Shifters Unbound #3.5) by Jennifer Ashley-a review

HARD MATED (Shifters Unbound 3.5) by Jennifer Ashley

HARD MATED is a short story (August 2012 release) in Jennifer Ashley’s Shifters Unbound series. When the shifters revealed themselves to the human population over 20 years before, fear and anxiety amongst the humans forced the shifters into segregated communities known as Shiftertowns and each shifter was collared to control possible aggression and the urge to kill. But in many of the Shiftertowns, illegal Shifter Fight Clubs were springing up and like any popular enterprises, the darker side of the fight clubs would rear its’ ugly head hoping to initiate a more lethal match to the death. Only this time, former allies, would tangle and it would be more than just the fighter’s lives at stake.

Eron aka Spike Reyes is a bodyguard, tracker and a jaguar shifter. But following his most recent fight, Spike would discover that he was also a father to a 4 year old jaguar shifter cub named Jordan. Along with this information came a young human female claiming that Jordan’s mother was dying and she needed to see Spike right away. Within a matter of hours, Spike had custody of his young son and his Grandmother Ella was the only one who knew how to raise a mischievous cub on her own.

Myka Thompson was a trainer of quarter horses for the rodeo. Finding her best friend’s one night stand in a fight club was a little out of her league, and Myka was worried that Spike’s penchant for fighting was a sign that he was not fit for fatherhood. But a call from Spike asking for help, would place Myka in a position to view Shifter life up close and personal. And the attraction between Myka and Spike is evident from the start. What becomes instantly recognizable are Spike’s predatory and protective nature which go into overdrive when his natural animal instinct demands he safeguard his cub and future mate. He is willing to risk a confrontation with the Shiftertown leaders and refuses to stand down when he knows he has overstepped the line.

Meanwhile, Spike had been approached about possibly branching out with a former Shifter acquaintance who has a great dislike for the treatment of shifters. Someone was offering Spike the ability to use his natural animal instincts in the ring in return for a coveted position in the Shifter hierarchy.  But insurance was needed so that  Spike would obey, and the threat against his family, would push Spike over the edge. And to his surprise, the very shifters he was willing to turn aside were the shifters who risked their own lives to save Spike’s new mate and his son.

HARD MATED is the latest novella in Jennifer Ashley’s Shifters Unbound series focusing on the struggles of a species that has been segregated from human society due to ignorance and the perceived danger of animal violence. Jennifer smoothly blends characters from her previous storylines allowing for a cohesive feeling between each novel and a familiarity throughout the stories. Hard Mated looks at the life of a species trying to live their lives as normal a possible, but the stereotype and discrimination are all to familiar to the real lives of many cultures and races we encounter in our every day lives.

BODY GUARD (Shifters Unbound #2.5) by Jennifer Ashley

BODY GUARD (Shifter Unbound #2.5) by Jennifer Ashley

Elizabeth Chapman is an independent woman, raising her younger sister and hiding a few secrets that she hopes no one will find.  Owning and operating a small store just outside of Shiftertown, she is one of the few human merchants willing to allow the shifters into her store. But when one of the local gang members decides to rob her store at gunpoint, Elizabeth is surprised to find a 15 ft Kodiak shifter coming to her rescue.

Ronan is a bear shifter from Shiftertown.  20 years earlier, the government forced all shifters collared and relocated to towns where they would not bother and anger the humans.  But discrimination is ugly whether you are human or shifter, and forcing them into areas once littered by garbage and debris was punishment for existing.  And Ronan has taken it upon himself to house many of the unmated and young shifters without family or anyone to look after.  With his extended family of shifters, Ronan knows what it is like to be alone in a room full of people.  But finding Elisabeth Chapman facing a gun, enraged the protective instincts of the bear within, and he soon found himself shackled before a judge for the attempt on the gang member’s life.

Freedom has its’ costs, but keeping Elisabeth and her sister Mabel safe, was Ronan’s first priority.  Knowing the gang would not stop, Ronan anointed himself Elisabeth’s bodyguard and protector for as long as the gang was still a threat. And there were internal threats as well.  Those in charge of Shiftertown knew Elizabeth had a secret, and they were not going to allow Elizabeth to bring any more problems into their small community of shifters and their mates.   But Ronan’s bear wanted more –he wanted a mate- and Elizabeth was his to claim.  And as a mate-claimed female, Elizabeth would be protected by everyone in Shiftertown and therefore she would no longer be perceived as a threat.

When the gang members made it known that they would not tolerate shifters or Elizabeth’s interference, Ronan agreed to a compromise –of sorts.  Shifter fights were illegal, but what the authorities did not know, did not hurt-except those that were left dead or maimed.  Agreeing to fight at the local fights, Ronan had no idea what he was about to face.  But Elizabeth’s past was about to catch up and it was during the fights that Ronan would finally learn what it was like to be truly loved and part of something bigger.

BODY GUARD is a great novella in Jennifer Ashley’s Shifter Unbound series.   The attraction between Elizabeth and Ronan was not readily apparent, because there wasn’t any of the relationship angst.  Ronan was nothing but a gentle (bear) where it involved his mate, and his was willing to take everything slow, although the mating frenzy would soon catch up. The character development was smooth. I liked that Jennifer included some of the Shiftertown background premise in the storyline allowing for new readers some semblance of fluidity.  Many novels cannot be read as stand-alone, but when the author includes pertinent background information, it is a bonus for everyone especially the new reader to any series. I am looking forward to Jennifer’s next novel in the Shifter Unbound series.

Pride Mates by Jennifer Ashley – a Review

Pride Mates by Jennifer Ashley – a Review

Pride Mates by Jennifer Ashley, is the first book in her Shifters Unbound series.  This is a paranormal romance in a different futuristic world.  Shifters came out and announced themselves 20 years ago, but freedom was not what they expected.  The shifters were delegated to their own towns, not allowed to mingle in most human elements, such as flying on an airplane, certain restaurants, etc.  Worse, all shifters were given a special collar to wear, that was spelled by the Fae (whom we do not see much in this book, other then knowing they helped create this collar).  The collar controls their violent animalistic tendencies, thereby making humans feel safe around them.  But they are restricted.

Kim Fraser, is a human attorney, who is defending a Shifter on a murder charge.  Kim goes to meet Liam Morrissey, who is the go between for his father, one of the leaders of the Austin Shifters. Liam works in a bar, and Kim is amazed how normal he seems to be.  In fact, as she walks through Shiftertown for the first time, she marvels how normal and happy the children and adults seem to be.  She is shocked how they all seemed to hug each other all the time.

Liam is a feline Shifter, but we do get to meet other shifters, such as Lupines (wolves), Ursine (bears).  He is immediately enamored by Kim, who is determined to help her client, even if he is a Shifter.  She does not allow herself to be afraid, and stubbornly insists that she needs their help to find out more information.  Of course, the leaders do not want anyone to know anything about them.  The main leader of the Shifters is Fergus, whom we hear a lot about, but don’t see much of him until the later part of the book.  But you know early on that Fergus, is one of the bad guys.

Liam marks Kim early on, to protect her from other shifters.  But, when a feral shifter goes after Kim, the game changes.  Liam, with the help of his family (Dylan his father, Sean his brother, and Conner is nephew), protect Kim from the dangers of her becoming involved with the Shifters, as well as those who do not want her defending the shifter on trial.  They force her to stay with them in Shiftertown, and despite her stubbornness that she has work to do, Kim finds herself falling for Liam, who is not only a gorgeous sexy hunk, but he is truly  a charming nice guy, whom everyone likes.  Liam already knows that he wants Kim, as she is his mate.

Ashley has done a wonderful job in bringing together this romance of a shifter and a human.  Watching both of them fight the attraction, and then give in to their lust, was fun to watch.  I enjoyed the banter between them and Liam’s family; especially Connor, who I adored, and I loved Sean.

The last half of the book was very exciting, as first Liam and his family are threatened by Fergus, and Kim is the one who must bring them to face Fergus.  In order to save Kim from the bad guy, Liam comes to her rescue and claims her as his mate.  This is still early on in the first half, which leads to many reveals, and an exciting climatic ending.  This book had everything from an interesting storyline, leading us into future books of this series; a fabulous romantic couple in Liam and Kim; great steamy sex; wonderful secondary characters in Sean and Conner; a suspenseful tense and exciting fight at the end, and a terrific end.  Pride Mates was a great and fun read, and this series is just beginning. I have added this series to my automatic buy.

The Duke’s Perfect Wife by Jennifer Ashley – a Review

The Duke’s Perfect Wife by Jennifer Ashley – a Review

The Duke’s Perfect Wife by Jennifer Ashley, is the 4th book in her Highland Pleasures series, better known as The Mackenzie’s. Here is a short blurb that tells you exactly what this series is about.

Meet the Mackenzie Men

Rich, powerful, dangerous, eccentric. A lady couldn’t be seen with them without ruin. Rumors surround them–of tragic violence, of their mistresses, of their dark appetites, of scandals that set Victorian England and Scotland abuzz. Hart, Cam, Mac, and Ian: each a tortured genius, each ready for love and darkly sensual games

Review:

The Duke’s Perfect Wife brings us to Hart MacKenzie, the eldest brother not married, and whom many have been waiting for his story.  Hart is the brother who spent his life taking care and protecting his family, and throughout the series you saw his controlling ways, his quest for power, as well as his arrogance.  But Hart, deep down has never forgotten his true love, Eleanor Ramsey.

Eleanor is our heroine in this story, and what a wonderful character she is.  Years before, it was Eleanor, who broke off her engagement with Hart.  Though she was very much in love with him, she discovered that he chose her to help him gain contacts and power.  Despite his attempt to force her to marry him, Eleanor was steadfast and refused to buckle under his threats.

Now years later, the story picks up with Eleanor, who lives somewhat impoverished, with her father in Scotland, coming to England to talk to Hart.  She meets with Hart, and explains that she has received some nude photographs of him sent to her anonymously.  She tells Hart that someone may be trying to stop him from becoming Prime Minister, and she wants to help.  She asks him for a job, to make a little money and to help him discover who is behind this.

Hart agrees to pay her a salary, as he has his own plans.  He wants Eleanor back in his life. Hart plans to win her back, as he has never forgotten her, and plans to marry her.  But he knows he has to thread carefully, so he doesn’t lose her again.  Almost immediately, you can feel the chemistry between the two them, and what a romance it is.   Hart has always had passion, and his quest to win Eleanor became his obsession.  But Eleanor, while having no plans other then helping Hart, and making some money on side, knows she still very much loves Hart.   Despite her not wanting to resume this relationship, she finds Hart much too difficult to ignore.

The MacKenzies played a big part in this story, all accepting and hoping Hart would indeed marry Eleanor, as they openly loved her. It was great to continue to see the family throughout.  Ian, though not always functional, depending on his Beth to keep him focused, would tell Hart that no matter where he is, he can always find him.  This does come to be true, as Ian does save the day.

There was so much fun watching Eleanor become the one who controlled Hart, and tempted him with fun stuff, like taking newer nude photographs of him for her own collection.  She would do what she wanted to do, driving Hart crazy, and it wasn’t long before their sexual tension erupted.  This was a very sensual story, and Eleanor and Hart relationship became very steamy.

There were a few surprises and changes closer to the end, that makes  a complete change in Hart & Eleanor’s life, as well as all the MacKenzies.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book.  Looking forward to the next book in Jennifer Ashley‘s wonderful series.
