Lemon Cupcake Seduction with Jennifer Lyon

Guest Post Black and Yellow

Lemon Cupcake

The heroines of my books get to have my dream careers. Baking is my hobby when I have the time (and can afford the calories!)I’m never going to own my own bakery, but I get to live the life of a baker though Kat Thayne, the heroine in THE PROPOSITION, Book One of The Plus One Chronicles. In the book, Kat walks away from her job as a chemist in her family’s pharmaceutical company to follow her dream of owning her own bakery.

Kat has no interest in romance. But when the sizzling hot Sloane Michaels, an ex-Ultimate Fighter and a self-made billionaire makes her a proposition, she can’t refuse.

Now maybe you’re wondering what could possibly attract Sloane to Kat?

Lemon cupcakes!

Okay it’s a lot more than lemon cupcakes, but the cupcakes do play a part as you can see from this scene clip where Kat brings Sloane some cupcakes as a gift:

Kat lost her breath at his demand. Felt her body soften and a languid need spread. His confidence, his words…it was so sexy. The way he savored the cupcake hit her lust center too. He licked the fork, long leisurely swipes of his tongue as he relished every crumb… She had to drop her gaze. Tried to focus on eating a bite of her cupcake.

“Damn, woman, that is good. There’s a pop of creamy lemon.”

Warmth flooded her, and she looked up. “It’s lemon curd. Mine has a fudge filling.”

He reached his fork across the table and sank it into her chocolate dessert. Slowly put it in his mouth, closed his eyes in evident delight. “Nice.” He dipped his fork back into his. “But I like lemon better.”

See? Sloane takes his cupcakes very seriously!

Making Kat a baker gave me an excuse to bake. I took a week off from writing right before Christmas and went on a baking marathon. I tested a couple lemon cupcake recipes, because I wanted only the best for Sloane. The one I liked best is this one, although it is fairly complicated: (source for cupcake recipe here http://www.browneyedbaker.com/2009/08/30/lemon-limoncello-cupcakes/)

Ingredients:

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
2 ounces (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
3 large eggs
2 tablespoons lemoncello liqueur
½ cup buttermilk
¼ cup lemon juice
Zest of one lemon

For the lemon curd:

Zest of 2 lemons
½ cup lemon juice
¼ cup granulated sugar, or more if lemons are very tart
1 egg + 1 egg yolk

For the cream cheese lemoncello frosting:

2 ounces (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
4 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1 tablespoon lemoncello
2 cups powdered sugar, sifted

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and place rack in center of oven.
For the cupcakes:

In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt and set aside. In a larger bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together the butter, cream cheese and sugar on medium speed until light and creamy—about 2 to 3 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the lemoncello and beat another minute. On low speed, alternate adding flour mixture and buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Finish by adding the lemon juice and zest on low speed until just incorporated. Divide evenly between 12 muffin tins. Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Note that the cupcakes will have a flat top done (at least mine did).

The lemon curd:

In a heavy medium sauce pan, stir together the lemon zest, juice and sugar and bring to a simmer over medium heat. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and egg yolk. Slowly whisk the lemon mixture into them to temper the eggs. Scrape the mixture back into the saucepan and place over medium heat, whisking until it thickens, about five minutes. Remove from heat and let cool completely.

Prepare the frosting:

Using an electric mixer, beat the butter and cream cheese on medium speed until light and creamy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the lemoncello and beat for an additional minute. Reduce the speed to low and gradually add the sifted powdered sugar and beat until smooth.

Assemble the cupcakes:

Remove cupcakes from pan, and place a flat surface. I used a melon baller to scoop out a hole in the top-center of each cupcake. Fill the cavity with lemon curd. Then fit a pastry bag with a star tip, fill it with the frosting and pipe it onto each cupcake.

Or you could go to a bakery and buy cupcakes, or even better, get the book THE PROPOSITION and live the life of a baker seduced by a sexy-hot billionaire through Kat!

REVIEW: THE PROPOSITION is the first storyline in Jennifer Lyon’s AMAZING new PLUS ONE CHRONICLES focusing on Sloane Michaels and Kat Thayne. As the series suggests, Sloane is a man looking for a ‘plus one’. Not one for any permanent or serious relationships, Sloane offers a proposition to bakery owner Kat Thayne-to be his ‘plus-one’ for both personal and public affairs. But Kat suffers with PTSD and has a difficult time letting go. When her past catches up with her, Sloane offers more than a chance at being his ‘plus-one’ –he offers her his protection as well as teaching her ways to face her demons-head on.

The relationship between Sloane and Kat begins as a proposition between two people whose paths had crossed years before, although our heroine is not aware of Sloane’s prior existence. With a past mired in secrets and pain Kat is unprepared for the feelings and emotions unlocked by Sloane’s presence in her life. He is everywhere and everything she needs and wants-although she doesn’t know it –yet.

The reader is taken on one woman’s journey as she fights the demons from her past, a dysfunctional family unit that tries to control and manipulate her life and, a new man who could very well be the promise to her future.

But Sloane has a secret, mired in guilt and shame, and in The Proposition we are privy to the barest amount of information. Perhaps Kat is the ticket to his redemption? And is Kat the one woman to thaw the frozen heart of a man who believes he deserves to be punished for a past mistake?

THE PROPOSITION is an amazing and breathtaking storyline. I was prepared for another ‘copy cat’ series but found I could not stop reading until the very end. I was pulled in, sucked under and discovered that I want a man like Sloane in my life. What woman doesn’t want a protector like Sloane Michaels and all of his bada**  heartbreaking goodness!! Jennifer Lyon has found her niche with the Plus One Chronicles.

JENNIFER LYON-Interview and Giveaway with the author

JENNIFER LYON-Interview and Giveaway with the Author

The Reading Cafe would like to introduce author Jennifer Lyon. Jennifer grew up under the shadow of the Matterhorn at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. She attended Walt Disney elementary school and her very first playmate was her beloved dog, Duke, who was cast in the role of hero in all their adventures.

Clearly Jen was born to daydream. But it took her years to figure out how to turn her imagination into a career as an author. After marrying and becoming a full time mom to three sons, Jen launched her career with the award winning Samantha Shaw Mystery Series and other romantic mysteries under the name Jennifer Apodaca. Later, she took the name Jennifer Lyon, combined her love of witches, alpha males and sizzling romance into another award winning series, the Wing Slayer Hunters. For more information on Jen or her books, please visit her website www.jenniferlyonbooks.com

TRC: Hi Jennifer and welcome to The Reading Café. We would like to start with some background information.

Jennifer: Thank you so much for having me! I’m excited to be here.

TRC:Would you please tell us about yourself?

Jennifer:   I’m pretty ordinary. I found my husband at the dog pound…now I know what you’re thinking. You got a man instead of a dog? Are you crazy? Well here’s the thing, my husband puts gas in my car and washes it. A dog can’t do that. So…Okay I’m kidding. I was working at the animal shelter, and my husband was sent there to do an audit. We fell in love, married and had three sons. I loved being a full time mom, but I also wanted to write. Eventually, my husband went back to school for his masters degree, and I realized it was time for me to start persuing my dream too. It took me eight long years, but I finally published.

TRC: Do you recall how or where your interest in writing originated? What inspired you to write your first book?

Jennifer: I originally got interested in writing back in high school. My father had passed away suddenly the summer before my freshman year, and we had to move states. I was alone a lot, became a voracious reader, and dreamed of writing novels someday.

TRC: Do you have a specific writing style?

Jennifer: Desperate? LOL! It’s hard for me to pinpoint a style, I just write what I think serves the characters and story.

TRC: You have also written romance novels and the Samantha Shaw Mystery series under the name Jennifer Apodaca. Which genre do you prefer and why?

Jennifer: That’s a tough question. I’d have to say that deep down, paranormal is my first love. It’s the bigger worlds, with higher stakes, and characters with more to lose that attract and hold my attention. In the Wing Slayer Hunter books, the heroes have more to lose than just the heroine; they are fighting to keep their souls. You know how people say, “I’d give my soul for him/her?” When these guys say it, they mean it quite literally. Writing the mysteries was a lot of fun though.

TRC: Many authors and writers bounce ideas with their spouses or significant others. Who do you bounce ideas (with)? Do you have a muse?

Jennifer: When I wrote the mysteries, I did bounce ideas off my husband. But in the paranormal world, I work with a critique partner, Laura Wright, and two author friends, Maureen Child and Kate Carlisle. The more I write, the less I talk about it randomly with people. I’ve learned to save that passion for the actual writing.

TRC: Would you please tell us about your Wing Slayer Hunter series? What was your inspiration for this particular series of storylines?

Jennifer: Even though the Wing Slayer Hunter series is nothing like the old TV show BEWITCHED, that was my original inspiration. I saw it in reruns when I was a kid, and even then, it absolutely drove me nuts that a smart, powerful witch was married to an unsupportive, and in my opinion, unworthy man. So I created men WORTHY of witches; strong, extremely alpha men who are not threatened by a woman of power. And then I put them in stories that forced them to fight to earn the right of loving, and being loved, by a witch. That was my initial goal. But the Wing Slayer Hunter world is very different from the old TV sitcom—much darker, more dangerous, emotional and very sexy.

TRC: Your latest storyline is the new release e-novella-Forbidden Magic. Would you please tell us the premise of this particular story? (see our review post below)

Jennifer: My premise is: Which is more powerful—the choice of love or the bonds of fate?

Here is the back cover blurb to the story:

Wing Slayer Hunter, Ram Virtos, must find his soul mirror witch and convince her to mate with him before his Thunderbird tattoo kills him. But while that witch might be able to save Ram’s life, it is the mysterious Ginny Stone who inflames his passion.

Ginny has been deeply fascinated by Ram for months, but dared not act on it or she’d be torn from her mortal life on earth and thrust into her dreaded destiny as a half-breed angel. But when her beloved brother’s soul is at stake, she must do the one thing she both fears and desires…

Take Ram to her bed.

TRC:  Will Ram and Ginny ever see their HEA–together?

Jennifer:  I want that very much. I have their book planned and intend to write it. Next is Linc’s book, then Eli’s, and then Ram and Ginny. The answers the two of them are searching for just aren’t as easy as they had hoped at the end of FORBIDDEN MAGIC.

TRC: Your next instalment in the Wing Slayer Hunters series is Cage Magic. Will you please tell us something about the premise for this particular storyline?

Jennifer: This is Linc and Risa’s story. Evil erupts on the Las Vegas strip, and shield-witch Risa rescues a baby girl and runs, only to be captured by a true demon spawn. Linc touches Risa’s blood left at the scene of the abduction and quickly realizes they are soul mirrors. Now he must win Risa in a death match cage fight. And that’s just the first battle as the two of them struggle to overcome dark pasts and deep secrets while battling to defeat a fiendish enemy and save the baby that Risa loves as her own.

TRC: Your publisher has decided against continuing your Wing Slayer Hunter Series but your many fans and readers of the series have urged you to publish independently. What did you learn through the process to indie publishing?

Jennifer: I am still learning! First, I have to say that I am touched and amazed by the support of my fans. They, combined with my love of the series, are the reason I’m doing this. It’s a huge motivator for me. Otherwise, I’m essentially turning into a publisher as well as a writer. That’s something I thought I’d never want to do, yet as it turns out, I love the freedom and the control that gives me. It takes time to search out editors and various professionals to help me deliver a solid book, but I like having control of the production process of the book.
The downside is that I feel I’ve lost a safety net. I’ve worked with some really great editors, and I always knew they’d catch things like dropped plot threads, uneven pacing or characterization problems. Now it’s all on me, and I feel that responsibility deeply.
I will make mistakes, but so far, I’m enjoying the process and absolutely thrilled to be able to share more Wing Slayer Hunters with both established and new fans.

TRC: What were your challenges bringing Forbidden Magic to self-publication?

Jennifer: Many of the challenges were in my own head. And I ran into some scheduling headaches—all normal stuff that so far that I’ve been able to manage. I’ve had great support, particularly from Laura Wright and Maureen Child who were my first readers, helping to find any problems in the first draft. Also, my husband has been extremely supportive. I can’t think of a huge challenge, but I’m sure I will run into a few on this journey.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Jennifer: I know the publishing industry is changing rapidly, but I don’t think our desire for good, fulfilling stories will ever change. I love connecting with readers who love books as I do. Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to hang out fellow book lovers!

LIGHTNING ROUND

FORBIDDEN MAGIC by Jennifer Lyon-a review

FORBIDDEN MAGIC by Jennifer Lyon

FORBIDDEN MAGIC by Jennifer Lyon

Background information from Jennifer Lyon’s website: Once they were immortal guardians; hunters of demon witches and protectors of innocent earth witches. For centuries, the hunters and witches worked together to safeguard earth from demons, in particular, Asmodeus.

And then a dark curse destroyed the bond, turning the ancient allies into enemies. For the blood and sex curse cast by demon witches caused witch hunters to crave the power contained in witch blood. If they give in and kill a witch to harvest her blood, they go rogue and forfeit their eternal souls.

The witches that once banished demons and assisted mortals, now have lost their familiars and high magic. They must hide from the powerful men who once protected them, but now hunt them for their blood. No one is left to stand between mortals and demons. Until one group of witch hunters rises to become the guardians once more. With these words:
“I vow my allegiance to Wing Slayer, god of the witch hunters. I take the ancient oath of protection for the innocent and justice for the damned. And I swear to fight the curse to my death.”

Ramsey (Ram) Virtos is an ex-navy Seal, guardian and Wing Slayer Hunter so close to going rogue, that he is willing to risk everything for the one thing he could not have. The need for sex and witch blood is driving him to the edge. The electrical current shifting through his body is building at an impossible rate and the Thunderbird is riding him hard, needing his mate. But Ram’s soul-mirror witch had refused to accept him as her mate, which is fine by Ram. Because his heart is searching for someone else, someone who would accept him body, soul and heart. But without his soul-mirror-his Thunderbird is slowing killing the Wing Slayer Hunter.

Virginia (Ginny) Stone is an enigma. Her shining light is like a breath of fresh air. Working the family bar, Ginny always knew when Ram had entered the room. She had been in love with the Wing Slayer hunter since he helped save her brother’s life, but there was something about Ginny that only her brother Eli knew. As her powers grew, so did her ability to sense and see through touch, but there is a power and aura that surround Ginny, and one that Ram must never call his (own).

Eli Stone is a Wing Slayer Hunter and only males carried the hunter DNA, but Ginny was something else. And that part of her DNA was the very essence their father demanded. But Ginny’s secret ran much colder and deeper-her father is one of the most powerful supernatural immortals. With his power, he has the ability to control Ginny and Eli with emotional blackmail and Ginny is no longer willing to risk the life of her brother. At her father’s command Ginny is ordered to seduce one of the strongest Hunters or face the consequences of forcing her brother to turn rogue. But seducing Ram Virtos is worth the price –and she is willing to pay with her emotions and her heart– but the cost may be too high for the Wing Slayer Hunter.

Forbidden Magic is the latest(April 2012 release) storyline (e-novella) in Jennifer Lyon’s Wing Slayer Hunter series. There are some interesting family dynamics involving the Stone siblings and their father. Father of the Year is not a title anyone would bestow upon the being that sired Ginny. Ram and Ginny’s relationship grows from need to love, but their HEA is not within reach. There is still the fact that Ram has a soul-mirror, a mate who is refusing their union. But as Ram and his fellow Hunters continue to search for clues about his emerging Thunderbird and the prospects of finding true-love in the arms of another woman, Ginny will always fear, that life as she now knows it, could end in a heart beat or flash in time. And whatever demon is riding Ram is something stronger than anyone could have known.

I like that Jennifer includes the other characters from her previous storylines. Many authors will write a series, but rarely allow the previous heroes anything but an acknowledgment in future storylines. The fact that many of the females have power and knowledge that is required by the Hunters, makes is necessary for the storylines and thus the characters to overlap. This is another wonderful story from Jennifer Lyon. Forbidden Magic is a quick read, but a necessary read in all things Wing Slayer Hunter. I look forward to Cage Magic.

Jennifer Lyon interview with Ram Virtos

Jennifer Lyon's interview with Ram Virtos

Jennifer: I’m so thrilled to share with you all, that I’ve released the Wing Slayer Hunter E-Novella, FORBIDDEN MAGIC. Down below I have a snippet of an
interview with Ram Virtos, the hero of the novella.

As many of you know, the publisher decided not to go forward with the Wing Slayer Hunter Series. My readers have been so amazing through this, offering support and encouragement, along with pleas for me to continue the series on my own.

With that much encouragement how could I resist? And so it’s with great pleasure that I am announcing the release of the FORBIDDEN MAGIC Novella.

And as a special thank you to my readers who have been so supportive and patient, I am pricing FORBIDDEN MAGIC at 99 cents until May 1, 2012 at Amazon, B&N and Smashwords.

Amazon: Forbidden Magic

Barnes and Noble: Forbidden Magic

Smashwords: Forbidden Magic

This is the second half of my interview with Ram. I’m going to have the entire interview up on my website soon! Jennifer Lyon

Ram drops into a nearby chair, stretches out his legs, raises his arms and laces his fingers behind his head. “Fine. Go.”

I…what? Staring at him, I see his t-shirt stretched tight over his chest, his biceps bulging. The man is a work of art. Lethal art to be sure, but still…he’s hot.

“Quit wasting time gawking, Lyon.”

A flush rolls over me and I sink down into a chair, trying to regain my composure. Glancing at my list, I begin with, “If you were an ordinary human being, what do you think your occupation would be?”

“If I were mortal, I’d have stayed in the SEALs. I was damn good at the job.”

Modest too. But okay, he’s right, he was good. “Next question, do you drive a car or motorcycle?”

He lifts his eyebrows. “I can drive anything, but I own a Range Rover. Motorcycles are okay, but I don’t need the flash like Phoenix.”

Seeing the glint of amusement in his eyes, I figure I’m safe to push for more. “Anything else you want to add to that?”

He shrugs. “I can pilot any helo or boat out there.” With a sly look he adds, “I have a boat, you know.”

He has a boat? Seriously? Shouldn’t I know that? Where is the boat? I look back at my notes to cover my confusion. “Uh, coffee or tea?”

“Coffee. But I’m not addicted like some people in this room. I have more self control than that.”

I ignore that swipe at me. Mostly because it’s true. “Why did you choose a thunderbird tattoo?”

His face darkens and he grinds his jaw.

Too late, I realize I was stomping all over dangerous territory.

“The bird has thunder and lighting,” he finally says. “Thunder is loud, obnoxious bragging. But the real danger? It’s the lightning you never see coming. By the time you do see it—you’re dead.”

Chill bumps scatter over my arms, and I shiver. Ram is exactly that kind of killer. He doesn’t threaten or warn, he strikes.Like lightning.

“Last question, Lyon.”

“Uh, yeah.” I scan the page, looking for something light and settle on, “Boxers or briefs?”

Ram rolls his eyes, then unlaces his fingers from behind his head, and in a fluid movement, rises from the chair. He reaches for the snap on his pants.

And undoes it.

My heart hammers, and I jump up. “What are you doing?”

He drags down the zipper. “Answering your question.” He begins to slide his pants lower. “You like to show everything in your books, right?”

“No! I mean yes, but—

“Then I’m showing.” The pants slide a bit farther.
