REVIEW:WHAT LOVERS DO by Jewel E Ann is a contemporary, adult romance story line focusing on optometrist Dr. Sophie Ryan, and pet store worker Marcus ‘Shep’ Shepherd.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Shep and Sophie) WHAT LOVERS DO follows the building romance and relationship between on optometrist Dr. Sophie Ryan, and pet store worker Marcus ‘Shep’ Shepherd. Sophie Ryan’s life is imploding all around her but meeting pet store worker Shep gives Sophie a reprieve in her otherwise disorganized life. Keeping secrets from the man with whom she will fall in love means starting off their relationship with a series of lies, a relationship that must be quickly friend-zoned, in an effort to protect both Sophie and Shep from losing their hearts. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Sophie and Shep, and the potential fall-out when the truth pushes Shep our of our heroine’s life.

Marcus ‘Shep’ Shepherd is quickly falling in love with our story line heroine but Marcus knows Sophie is keeping secrets, secrets that are about to break his heart. Having loved and lost in the past, Shep must walk away before losing his heart and everything to our story line heroine. Sophie Ryan’s world is literally out of her control, and our heroine struggles to make sense of it all. Keeping secrets from Shep means hiding behind the lies, lies that are gong to break our hero’s heart.

The relationship between Sophie and Shep is one of immediate attraction, the shared joy of dog ownership, and a quiet, palpable sexual heat but Sophie battles between head and heart, having lived through the betrayal of a previous relationship, a relationship that refuses to let go. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Sophie’s father Dalton Ryan and his wife Taryn; Sophie’s ex Jimmy, and her best friend Jules, as well as Shep’s ex Millie, co-worker Marta, and his best friend Howie.

WHAT LOVERS DO is a story of secrets and lies, family and friendships, relationships and love. The character driven premise is entertaining and engaging; the slow-burn romance is impassioned and seductive; the characters are energetic but flawed.

REVIEW:THE LOST FISHERMAN is the second instalment in Jewel E Ann’s contemporary, adult FISHERMAN romance duet focusing on the now twenty-three year old nurse/midwife Therese ‘Reese’ Capshaw, and thirty- three year old contractor Fisher Mann. THE LOST FISHERMAN should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up five years after the cliff hanger and events of book one THE NAKED FISHERMAN.

Told from first person perspective (Reese) with one final chapter from Fisher, THE LOST FISHERMAN picks up five years after the events of book one wherein, Reese, having proclaimed her love for our story line hero, walked away, to work with the Christian missions in Thailand, only to return to the US one year later with thoughts of the man she left behind and plans for the future. Fast forward to present day wherein Reese, about to interview for a new job, is called home, where she will come face to face with her past, Fisher Mann, the man she hasn’t stopped loving but Reese is no longer the young woman who ran out of Fisher’s life, and Fisher is now a shell of his former self. What ensues is the rebuilding romance and relationship between Fisher and Reese, and the potential fall-out as Fisher has moved on from the past, and is looking to a future with someone else.

THE LOST FISHERMAN is a story of love and loss; secrets and lies; heart break, friendships, and family. Jewel E Ann pulls the reader into an emotional story about one man’s struggle to remember the past, and one woman’s battle between head and heart knowing she may be too late to rekindle what once was. The premise is impassioned; the characters are colorful, charismatic yet somewhat tormented; the romance is captivating-the $ex scenes are mostly implied.

It’s official.

I’m eighteen and a young woman with endless possibilities on my way to reunite with my mom in Colorado after five years apart—she had a little weed incident in Nebraska.

At the airport, she springs the news on me … she’s leaving for a month of job training. And me? I’m left on my own in the basement she’s renting from the fisherman, aka her landlord who lives upstairs.

He’s ten years older than me. Never wears a shirt. And makes it hard to remember all the things I learned at Christian Academy.

Did I mention he’s also my new boss?

REVIEW:THE NAKED FISHERMAN is the first instalment in Jewel E Ann’s contemporary, new adult to adult FISHERMAN romance storyline focusing on eighteen year old Therese ‘Reese’ Capshaw, and twenty-eight year old contractor Fisher Mann.

Told from first person perspective (Reese) THE NAKED FISHERMAN focuses on the age-gap relationship between eighteen year old Therese ‘Reese’ Capshaw, and twenty-eight year old contractor Fisher Mann. Reese Capshaw hadn’t seen her mother in close to five years since her mother’s imprisonment for marijuana possession but taking a gap-year before heading to college, Reese embarked on a journey to get reacquainted with the woman she no longer knew, a woman whose own secrets run silent and deep…but…Reese’s mother Rory is about to embark on a journey of her own, leaving her eighteen year old daughter in the ‘care’ of her sexy and gorgeous landlord. Enter twenty-eight year old, contractor Fisher Mann, and the man with whom Reese will fall in love. What ensues is the back and forth, building relationship between Reese and Fisher, and the fall-out as Reese and Fisher’s time together comes to a close as Reese’s mother’s secrets come to the surface, and Reese takes leave to struggle on her own.

Reese Capshaw has spent the past five years living with her ultra conservative, uber-Christian grandparents and as such her rigid upbringing and belief system is so far right that our heroine struggles with the behaviour and attitudes of the average person. Often battling with the reality of the world, Reese finds herself attracted to her mother’s landlord Fisher Mann, a man who stirs something deep within our story line heroine something Fisher struggles to contain as well. As their relationship begins to take on a more personal agenda, Reese battles between head and heart believing her actions and desire are evil and sins.

The relationship between Reese and Fisher is one of immediate attraction but Reese is a virgin; an ultra conservative young woman whose religious upbringing and beliefs control her every day actions including a range of beliefs thought to be sins. As Fisher tries to control the building lust between our story line couple, Reese is the only one to control how far they will go. Meanwhile, Reese sees green as Fisher’s personal life continues, leaving our heroine to pout on her own. The $ex scenes are exploratory but do not go ‘all the way’ but I dislike the use of a certain four-letter word, used only once, but more for shock value than anything else. The sexual tension is heavy and tight.

We are introduced to Reese’s mother Rory, Rory’s friend Rose, and Fisher’s secretary Hailey.

THE NAKED FISHERMAN is a story of obsession, reflection, heart break, love and passion; a tale of homophobia, discrimination, ultra-conservative Christian beliefs, doubt and desperation. The premise is captivating and compelling; the characters are energetic; the romance is passionate but frustrating. To be honest, I struggled in the early stages of the story , and the overly religious heroine whose strict Christian ideology felt like a catechism lesson at Sunday mass. I am not a fan of story lines with ultra-conservative, far-right, uber religious overtones, and thusly, my appreciation for THE NAKED FISHERMAN may not be the same as everyone else.

THE NAKED FISHERMAN ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

For Lucy, I will keep a secret, and I will watch my wife drift into the arms of another man.

••••••

REVIEW:FOR LUCY by Jewel E Ann is an emotional, stand alone, contemporary, adult love story focusing on Emmett Riley, his estranged wife Tatum, and their daughter Lucy.

Told from first person perspective (Emmett) with one chapter from Lucy, using present day and memories from the past, FOR LUCY follows in the aftermath of not one but three tragedies that befall the Riley family. Eighteen years earlier, a case of mistaken identity, finds Emmett Riley falling in love with someone else’s blind date-Tatum Bradshaw. Love, life, and devastation would result in marriage, children then divorce, as Emmett Riley still pines for his wife after all these years. Fast forward to present day, wherein Emmett watches from the side lines as his wife moves on with someone else, knowing if the truth were revealed, life as they know it would never be the same. What ensues is the acrimonious but rebuilding relationship between Emmett and Tatum, and the fall-out as another tragedy threatens to destroy any happiness that has long since been tempered.

FOR LUCY is a heart breaking, emotional and haunting story of love, loss, tragedy and forgiveness. Emmett Riley has never stopped loving the woman that broke his heart but secrets and lies, once revealed, are about to turn the family upside down, once again. FOR LUCY is not a story of romance but a story of second chances and love; of understanding; of revelations; of forgiveness. It is a story of lies meant to protect, of secrets meant to heal. Jewel E Ann pulls the reader into a dramatic and impassioned story of tragedy, consequences, forgiveness and healing

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 6, 2020

Are humans meant to mate for life?

After four kids and an unfortunate but fateful end to her twenty-two-year marriage, Elsie Smith meets the new guy in town.

Kael Hendricks is … a little younger, a lot sexy, and too confident for his own good. He also doesn’t believe in marriage and all that goes with it.

And …

He’s just opened a new business that threatens the livelihood of Elsie’s family’s store—just in time for the holidays.

The problem?

There’s an undeniable attraction that leads to out of control situations, a loss of inhibitions, and a lot of small town gossip.

As Elsie tries to redefine herself and convince her family she isn’t having a midlife crisis, she’s forced to answer the biggest question of all …

Can she love an enemy who will never surrender?

•••••••••

REVIEW:NOT WHAT I EXPECTED by Jewel E Ann is a contemporary, adult story of women’s fiction focusing on forty-two year old, widow Elsie Smith.

Told from first person perspective (Elsie) NOT WHAT I EXPECTED follows in the aftermath of the death of forty –two year old Elsie Smith’s husband. With three of their four children in college and living away from home, Elsie finds herself struggling to keep the Smith family business viable, a business that is about to get some stiff competition from a new, upscale store catering to the hottest trends. Enter thirty-year old businessman Kael Henricks, and the man with whom Elsie will fall in love. What ensues is the clandestine and secretive relationship between Elsie and Kael, and the fall-out as Elsie battles between head and heart, and struggles with jealousy, envy, insecurity and loss.

Elsie Smith never expected to ever again fall in love, and a secret relationship with the hot, young newcomer throws our heroine into a personal spiral. Living in a small town with all of the small-town gossip finds Elsie struggling with perception, and the potential for judgement in the eyes of not only her neighhbors’ but in the eyes of God, for our heroine is very religious, and their sexual relationship is so much more.

NOT WHAT I EXPECTED is a beautifully written story of second chances, of a sorts, but I struggled to like or sympathize the story line heroine. She is immature and often adolescent in behaviour, jumping to conclusion and throwing tantrums in public at the slightest provocation. Following the dictates of the bible, Elsie often finds herself in opposition to the teachings of her church, teachings that are reinforced at her weekly group grief meetings. Meeting Kael Henricks stirs something deep within widow Elsie Smith but Kael doesn’t promise forever, and his personal convictions , like his store, are in direct competition with our story line heroine.

NOT WHAT I EXPECTED is a character driven story line about a heroine who is lost, angry, stubborn and raw. The premise is emotional; the characters are energetic and flawed; the romance is spirited and edgy.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 27, 2020

Conspiracies. Corruption. Serial killers.

You name it—I’m fascinated by it. My mom always blamed my overly curious and highly suspicious mind on my dad.

My incredibly overbearing dad.

Mr. No One Is Good Enough For My Daughter has been terrifying my dates since I turned fifteen.

College is my chance to be free from his control and date any guy I want.

I’m absolutely certain he would hate Slade Wylder—almost as certain as I am that I do too.

Since when have I shied away from trouble?

Slade fascinates me. He lives in a house I’m certain is haunted. His dog is trained as well as any guard I’ve ever seen. Rumor on campus is that he deals drugs. It would explain a lot.

But it doesn’t explain why he saves me from my darkest moment.

It doesn’t explain why I can’t stop thinking about him.

And the explanation I finally discover is far more dangerous than any rumor.

••••••••

REVIEW:OUT OF LOVE by Jewel E Ann is a contemporary, adult, erotic, romantic suspense story line set in the author’s Jack and Jill world. This is Livy Knight, and Slade Wylder’s story line. Livy is the daughter of Jackson Knight and Ryn Middleton (Middle of Knight-Jack and Jill 2-3). OUT OF LOVE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the Jack and Jill series for back story and history.

Told from three first perspectives (Livy, Slade and Jackson) covering several years in the life of Livy Knight, OUT OF LOVE focuses on the building romance and relationship between Livy Knight, and Slade Wylder. A senior in college Livy Knight will meet the mysterious Slade Wylder, a new student and now her neighbour but a man whose secrets run dangerous and deep. Believing Slade is a drug dealer or deaf (because of the constant presence of what Livy believes is a support dog) or an escort for hire, Livy’s curiosity will pull our heroine into the aura that is Slade Wylder, a man who refuses to reveal the true extent of his business in town. But all is not well in Slade Wylder’s life, when the past demands payment for sins, and Livy may be more than just collateral damage. What ensues is the building but acrimonious relationship between Slade and Livy, and the fall-out when the truth is revealed.

OUT OF LOVE covers approximately eleven years in the life of Livy Knight-a wild child who constantly defies her father Jackson Knight, a man whose need to protect his daughter, is based upon experience and fact but our heroine is unaware of her father’s history, a history that is about to repeat itself, in more ways than one. Slade Wylder is a man of many secrets having led a life of danger and death. Meeting Livy Knight gives Slade a hope for some normalcy but reality will pull Slade back and force him to make a heart breaking decision.

The relationship between Livy and Slade is tempestuous at best as Livy is unable to let go of her curiosity as it pertains to Slade Wylder. Slade is a bit of an enigma; a man whose secrets spark Livy’s need to know, a need that will place our heroine in the direct line of fire. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

For fans of the author’s Jack and Jill series, the appearance of Livy’s father Jackson Knight, and her aunt Jessica (Jackson’s twin) brings the familiarity of old friends but also the pain of loss of what was and what will never be.

OUT OF LOVE is a story of family and love; betrayal and vengeance; secrets, lies, power and control. The thought provoking premise is intriguing and captivating; the romance is fated but heart breaking; the characters are energetic, spirited and colorful. OUT OF LOVE is a raw, emotional, haunting and surprising return to the author’s Jack and Jill world, and the characters we loved.

After their kissy-huggy greeting ended, they walked toward the house with
Jericho in tow. I waited for him to glance back at me. He saw me. There was no way he
passed me a few seconds earlier on the street and didn’t see me. Yet, he made no
attempt to acknowledge me.
Until …
My boy Jerry stopped abruptly and turned like he caught whiff of my scent. All
the warm fuzzies filled my chest. A dog gave me more feels than any man had given me
in a long time. Maybe ever.
Jericho liked me. Hell, maybe he loved me.He protected me.
He smiled when he saw me—tongue out, tail in a low wag. I continued my way up
the sidewalk, feigning surprise when he trotted toward me in spite of Slade barking his
own command.
“Hey, Jerry.” I squatted down to give him double the love Miss Sophisticated gave
him … and I had a treat in my pocket because part of me anticipated—hoped for—a
chance encounter. “Oh, buddy … I love you too.” I closed my eyes and turned my face
side to side while he showered me with kisses.
Slade cleared his throat.
I opened my eyes—noticing his friend must have gone inside. “Sorry.” I stood,
sliding a treat into Jericho’s mouth along the way. “I know it’s hard for you to know he
likes me more.” On a shrug, I bit my lips together to keep my shit-eating grin under
control.
“Inside,” he said to Jericho while looking at me.
Jericho turned and headed to the back door.
“If you have a job to do … Jerry can hang with me tonight. I’m alone this
evening.”
“Jericho. And he doesn’t need a babysitter.”
“Maybe I do.”
His brow tensed a fraction, contemplation settling into a slight frown for a few
seconds, before he whistled and Jericho came running. “Send him home when your
friends get back.”
Why was the only word that sat on the tip of my idle tongue? Why protect me?“What are you going to do?” Okay, apparently “why” wasn’t the only word on the
tip of my tongue after all. Six other words were in line first.
“Does it matter?”
Letting my gaze settle over his shoulder to the firehouse and images of Miss
Sophisticated waiting for him, I lifted a single shoulder. “No. Just curious. Is she your
girlfriend?”
“Does it matter?”
“I hate you.” I rolled my eyes. “Worst communication skills ever.”
“Good. Hate me. I prefer it.”
I recoiled. I didn’t really hate anyone. It wasn’t my personality to be hateful,
vengeful, or hold grudges. Why did Slade Wylder want me to hate him? It was a joke. I
hated his lack of sharing information.
“If you’re selling her some shit that will ruin her life, may I suggest you rethink
that? Not cool, Wylder.”
“Noted.”
Tipping my chin up, I gave him several tiny nods. “Okay then. I’ll take Jerry to my
house and spoil him. Maybe he comes back to you … maybe he doesn’t.”
Slade let his gaze slide down my body, a slow and easy trip. He didn’t do that
when we met. Somewhere along the way, he decided it was okay. I wasn’t sure what
reaction he desired from me.
Maybe nothing.
Maybe he did it out of pure selfish desire.
“I’m only allowing this because I love Jerry.”
Curious eyes met mine, slightly squinted.I smirked. “Stripping me with those eyes of yours.”
Moments …
I collected moments in my mind, my heart, my soul, like Aubrey collected rare
coins—my mom dying, my dad spending a few years thoroughly drunk. Mostly bad
moments—permanent scars.
That moment I tucked into my memory forever as one of the first truly great
moments.
Wylder …
The corners of his mouth quirked into pure sin. If Satan was hot as fuck, his
name would have been Slade Wylder, and I would have been in a whole helluva lot of
trouble.

When kisses are stolen, man-bans are broken, and summer comes to an end, will hearts stay in one piece and hope stay alive? Or will saying goodbye destroy everything?

•••••••••

REVIEW: FORTUITY is the third instalment in Jewel E Ann’s contemporary, adult TRANSCEND erotic, slightly paranormal, romance story line This is forty-six year old, professor Nathaniel Hunt, and forty-one year old, Gracelyn Glock’s story line. FORTUITY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for Nathaniel Hunt’s back story.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Nate and Gracelyn) FORTUITY follows the building romance and relationship between forty-six year old, professor Nathaniel Hunt, and forty-one year old, Gracelyn Glock. Gracelyn Glock is a single parent, raising her late brother’s son Gabe after a tragic accident that saw Gracelyn become an instant parent. Refusing to uproot ten year old Gabe, Gracelyn moves to Gabriel’s home town of San Diego where she will meet and fall in love with Professor Nathaniel Hunt. Nate and his ten year old daughter Morgan have rented a beach house for the summer next door to Graceyn and Gabe, before embarking on the final leg of their eight year journey around the world but Nate never expected to fall in love in the final few months, a few months where he will lose his heart to a woman who is unable to continue their journey together. What ensues is the building but tearful romance and relationship between Nate and Gracelyn, and the potential fall out as Nate walks away from the woman he loves leaving a heart broken Gracelyn in the wake.

Gracelyn Glock knows love, and struggles with memories from the past, memories that often keep our heroine from moving forward. Meeting Nathaniel Hunt finds Gracelyn hoping for a future but a future that will have to be put on hold while she raises the son of the brother she has lost. Nathaniel Hunt and his daughter have spent eight years travelling the world but Nathaniel knows it is time to settle down. Having lost the only two women he has ever loved, Nate never expected to find love a third time, a love that is stronger than the other two combined.

The relationship between Nate and Gracelyn is one of immediate attraction, forced together by circumstance and time. Gracelyn knows that their time together is soon to come to a close but Nate is hoping for something more. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate but mostly implied.

We are introduced to Gracelyn’s nephew Gabe, as well as her mother Sharon and father Forest : Nathaniel’s daughter Morgan, and his parents; and Gracelyn and Nathaniel’s landlord Mr. Hans who sees more than everyone else.

FORTUITY is an emotional yet heart warming story of family and responsibility; of letting go and moving forward; of second chances, love and happily ever after. The premise is poignant and impassioned –I may have cried a tear or twenty: the romance is seductive and passionate; the characters are animated and playful. FORTUITY is a wonderfully warm and spirited story of the power of love, acceptance and happily ever afters.

“Life is a celebration. Cake needs no excuse.”
So much for having some time to digest what Nate said to me and my flirty reaction to his kiss comment. I put on a neutral face and drag my timid ass into the kitchen.
“Cake, Gracelyn?” Nate glances up from the counter, a knife in one hand and a plate in his other hand.
“Mmm … yes, Gracelyn. You want cake.” Morgan rolls her eyes back in her head as she slowly chews a bite, standing next to Nate.
How am I supposed to look at him when I saw him barely an hour ago and he said he wanted to kiss me, and I returned the desire without the actual kiss? I guess we’re going to be two people who want to kiss but know that it will never happen.
“Thank you.” I take the cake, giving Nate a two-second glance. It’s all I can give him without completely self-combusting into a pile of ashes.
“Mr. Hans … this is so good.” Morgan traipses out of the kitchen.
“It is good. I haven’t had cake in a long time.” I slowly lick the frosting from the fork.
Nate glances at the floor, eyes narrowed, and hunches down. After a few seconds, I move around to his side of the island.
“Did you drop something?”
Hunched like a baseball catcher, gaze still to the floor, he crooks a finger at me.
I set my plate on the counter. “Did you lose a contact lens?” I squat next to him behind the counter.
He lifts his gaze to meet my squinted eyes. The corner of his mouth bends just as his hand slides behind my head and his lips press to mine.
What the hell?
My lungs freeze while my heart pauses and my mind explodes. There’s no tongue to this kiss, just hungry lips. It knocks me off balance, and I fall to my knees, resting my hands on his shoulders.
Nate pulls back half an inch, letting his lips hover next to mine, the warmth of his breath covering my stunned mouth. “I’m not even sorry.” He shrugs.
My mouth opens as if it wants to speak, but I have no idea what to say.
“Dad …”
Nate bolts up, leaving me on my knees. “Yes?”
“Can Hunter use—” Morgan’s eyes narrow at me, my head barely peeking over the counter. “Gracelyn, what are you doing?”
“I’m …” I give her a tight smile.
Nate says, “Picking up a few crumbs.”
At the same time, I say, “Tying your dad’s shoe.”
His explanation is much better.
Morgan laughs. “Um … okay. You’re both acting weird.”
I climb to my feet.
“Can Hunter use what?” Nate asks.
“Your bike so we can go for a bike ride.”
“Are you going to stay around here?”
Morgan nods. “Pinky swear. We won’t go too far.”
“I’ll need to put the seat down for her.”
“Yes! Thanks, Dad. I’ll go tell her.” Morgan runs out of the kitchen.
Nate covers the cake with plastic wrap and nods to my plate with the half-eaten piece of cake. “Are you going to finish that?”
Cake. He wants to talk about the cake?
My head inches side to side.
“Too good to let it go to waste.” He picks up the plate and finishes my cake.
YOU KISSED ME!
“By the way …” His gaze remains on the plate as he scoops up the last bite. “Morgan knows I know how to tie my own shoes.”

REVIEW:THE LIFE YOU STOLE is the second and final instalment in Jewel E Ann’s contemporary, adult LIFE transcendental, preternatural duet focusing on paramedic and ski instructor Ronin Alexander, and chemist/soap maker Evelyn ‘Evie’ Taylor, and their friends Governor Graham Porter and his fiancé Lila. THE LIFE YOU STOLE should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events and cliff hanger of book one THE LIFE THAT MATTERED.

WARNING: Due to the nature and content of the story line premise THE LIFE YOU STOLE may contain triggers, and therefore may not be suitable for more sensitive readers.

NOTE: If you have not read THE LIFE THAT MATTERED, there may be some spoilers in my review.

Told from four first person perspectives (Evie, Ronin, Graham and Lila) THE LIFE YOU STOLE follows in the aftermath of a skiing accident that left Lila struggling to survive, and Ronin permanently connected to Evie’s best friend. Ronin Alexander is a ski instructor/ paramedic, and struggles with in the wake of every life he has to save but Ronin is compelled by the recent rescue of Lila, a rescue that will damage and destroy his relationship with his wife.

Jewel E Ann pulls the reader into a unique and startling story line of friendship and betrayal; of what ifs and whys; of vengeance, power, and control. THE LIFE YOU STOLE will be a difficult read for many readers as the content is dark and raw, emotional and powerful. The struggles are real; the pain is palpable; the heart break and torment a punch to the gut. A dramatic and intense story of hatred and love; of secrets and lies; of one man’s battle between life and death. THE LIFE YOU STOLE is a fantastic, amazing and wondrous psychological thriller with a paranormal edge that will keep you on the edge of you seat.

I jumped, shutting my computer, and glanced up at Graham paused at the threshold to my room, loosening his red tie. He always looked handsome in a suit and that red tie I gave him for his birthday. I didn’t expect to see him. My assistant said he was at the Governor’s Mansion. I rarely stayed there, but he used it as an occasional “getaway.” Probably from me. So when she told me he was there, I made the assumption (actually hoped) he’d decided to stay the night and get some work done.
“It’s not even seven.” I tucked my bare feet beneath me, still wearing my navy skirt suit and silk scarf—my long hair in loose curls down my back and around my shoulders just like Graham liked it.
He took calculated steps toward me, completely untying his tie, letting it drop to the floor before working the buttons to his starchy white shirt. I tried to forget my internet search, not that it mattered because I couldn’t hide anything from my husband. He elicited a warring of emotions from me. An icy tingle slithered along my spine, making every muscle rigid, while the warmth in my heart fed on the way my pulse reacted to his proximity, the way it always had done. That never changed. It was how I knew we weren’t broken.
“Did you miss me?” He smirked, shrugging off his shirt, revealing his defined torso—abs for days beneath a thin smattering of dark hair on his chest.
I was the envy of so many women. Every day I reminded myself of that.
“Nice scarf.” He knelt in front of the chair.
I returned a nervous smile, hoping the man before me was the man I loved. Graham untied the scarf, sliding it from my neck as slowly as he’d slid off his tie just seconds earlier. The scarf floated to the floor. Gentle fingers swept my hair off my shoulders, exposing my neck.
With the same feather’s touch, he traced the bruises. “It’s nothing …” His lips replaced his fingers, kissing my neck. “You’re fine. Right?”
I wanted to believe him. Could denial become truth if we just believed hard enough?
“I’m fine,” I murmured, closing my eyes.
“Want me to show you how much I missed you?” he whispered next to my ear.
Was he asking me for permission? Governor Graham demanded me. Pre-marriage, pre-Governor Graham asked … begged me to surrender to him.
