And then there’s Kinsey Davis, who after battling serious health issues her entire twenty-nine years of life, is tired of hoping for . . . well, anything. She’s fierce, tough, and pretty much the opposite of Brynn except for one thing: they’re half-sisters. Kinsey is keeping this bombshell, and a few others as well. Long time frenemies from summer camp, there’s no way she’s going to tell Brynn they’re related.

But then Brynn runs into Kinsey’s lifelong best friend, Eli, renewing a childhood crush. He’s still easy-going and funny and sexy as hell. When he gets her to agree to a summer-time deal to trust him to do right by her, no matter what, she never dreams it’ll result in finding a piece of herself she didn’t even know was missing. She could have a sister, love, and a future―if she can only learn to let go of the past.

As the long days of summer wind down, the three of them must discover if forgiveness is enough to grasp the unconditional love that’s right in front of them

Review:

The Summer Deal by Jill Shalvis is the 5th book in her wonderful Wildstone series.  As noted on previous occasions, I love reading Jill Shalvis’s books, as she is the best at pure romances. We meet our heroine, Brynn Turner, who returns home to Wildstone, after her boyfriend left her and took everything she owned (money, valuables,  apartment lease, etc).   Brynn considers herself a loser, always picking the wrong guy.  She returns to her two moms, doing her best to not reveal how bad shape she was in. When she has an anxiety attack trying to explain her predicament, she is rushed to the hospital, but not for long.  As she leaves to runs into an old friend, whom she had a crush on as a teenager.

Eli Thomas, always had a slight crush on Brynn, but because he was part of the popular group in school, led by the mean girl Kinsey, he never got to first base with Brynn.  Kinsey and Brynn were enemies at camp during their childhood days, with Brynn hating her. Life is about to change for all of them.

Kinsey Davis, continues to be Eli’s best friend, and once again he is there for her in the hospital.  Kinsey has a failing kidney, and is currently on dialysis; and had been hoping for a kidney transplant, but it turned out not to be a match. Kinsey has had her issues since she was 15 years old, having received a kidney from a school mate, only for him to die shortly thereafter.  She refuses to accept any kidney, unless it’s from a recently deceased person.   Kinsey does have a secret, when investigating DNA’s, she discovered that Brynn had the same sperm donor father, and therefor she is her half-sister; but she is not about to tell Brynn that.

When Eli runs into Brynn the next day, he offers her a room to rent at his place, which in order to get away from her moms constant attention, she accepts.  She meets Max, Eli’s brother and then to her shock learns that Kinsey also has a room there.  At first Brynn leaves, but they will convince her to give it a chance.

The Summer Deal revolves around Brynn, Eli and Kinsey, as Eli tries hard to help them learn more about each other, in hope that Kinsey would tell Brynn the truth, and maybe save her own life in the process.  The romance between Eli and Brynn was slow built, but we saw the chemistry between them quickly.  Brynn had been hurt badly a number of times, and was hesitant to allow herself to fall for Eli.  Very slowly, both Brynn and Kinsey learn to get past their old differences, and become friends; though when Kinsey reveals the truth about her condition, as well as they are half sisters, things fall apart.  Brynn demands truths always, no secrets and they make up, and now Brynn is determined to be tested to help her sister; but Kinsey will not accept, for her fear of the donor dying again.

I loved all the characters in this story, and Shalvis usually creates wonderful ones, but she outdid herself in this book. Besides, Brynn, Kinsey, Eli, I loved Deck (Kinsey’s nurse boyfriend), Max, Toby, Brynn’s two moms. Most of all, I loved how Brynn and Kinsey became closer, and turn into true sisters, there for each other.  Very well done.

The Summer Deal was a fantastic, intriguing, heartwarming story about family, tragedy, romance, forgiveness and love.  Secrets will be revealed that will change the course of their lives. Though Brynn and Kinsey were difficult at times, I did care about both of them, as well as the rest of the other characters, especially Eli and Deck.

The Summer Deal was so well written by Jill Shalvis, which I always come to expect from her, as well as being very emotional.  Shalvis pulls on our emotions throughout the book, which happily does have a HEA. I do not want to tell too much more, as this is one book you want to read from start to finish.  If you have not read Jill Shalvis, what are you waiting for?

Review:

Almost Just Friends by Jill Shalvis is the 4th book in her Wildstone series.  Once again, I love reading Jill Shalvis’s books, as she is one of the best at romances. Almost Just Friends is about a family that has become broken, with secrets and heartache trying to heal and mend.

We meet Piper Manning, our heroine, as she is always on the run, especially working as an EMT, as well as helping her older neighbor who needs to be checked daily, and organizing her own life.  Piper has taken care of her younger brother and sister for many years, after their parents were killed, and now they have gone their own way. Piper intends to fix up the house in her spare time, sell it, divide the money and be free to go away to get her dream degree to become a Physician’s Assistant.  Best laid plans do not always work out, as in a short time her brother, Gavin and sister, Winnie both return home; bringing their own secrets that will change Piper’s plans.

Camden Reid, our hero, is on leave from the Coast Guard and returns home to check on his father.  When a storm hits, Camden discovers Piper trying to get to his father’s house to make sure he is ok.  In a short time, the attraction between Piper and Cam sizzles, and they both will discover that they have a lot in common; both devoting their time in taking care of others, not looking at their own lives.  They both have their own issues, such as Cam’s guilt over his brother’s death and Piper’s determination to continue to be a ‘fixer’ for her family.

What follows is a heartwarming story about family, tragedy, romance and finding a way to get past the complications for each of them.  Secrets will be revealed that will change the course of their lives.  Piper was a wonderful heroine, who was not only strong, independent, but also unable to let go of her trying to do everything for her siblings and others, not allowing herself to find a happy ever after.   Cam too had his grief over his brother’s death, but he knew Piper was meant for him; and he was willing to change his life to be together; will he be able to convince Piper to open her heart to their own happiness?

As always with Jill Shalvis,  this story was so well written, with a great couple and wonderful secondary characters.  Almost Just Friends was a wonderful sweet heartwarming story about family, love and happiness.  If you enjoy small town romances, great couples, heartfelt stories, then you need to read this series.  If you have not read Jill Shalvis, what are you waiting for?

“I was very clear,” she said when the alcohol burn cleared her throat, eyeing the whole group, most of whom were also first responders and worked with her at the station or hospital in one form or another. “We weren’t going to mention my birthday, much less sing to me about it. Twice.”
Not a single one of them looked guilty. “To Piper,” Ryland said, and everyone raised a glass. “For gathering and keeping all us misfits together and sane.”
“To Piper,” everyone cheered, then, thankfully, conversations started up all around her so that she was finally no longer the center of attention. Everyone was well versed in her ways, which meant they got that while she was touched that they cared, she didn’t want any more attention. Easily accepting that, they were happy to enjoy the night and leave her alone.
“So, did that hurt?” Jenna asked, amused.
“What?”
“Being loved?”
In tune to the sounds of the bar around them—someone singing off-key to “Sweet Home Alabama,” rambunctious laughter from a nearby table, the clink of pool balls—Piper rolled her eyes.
“You know one day those eyeballs are going to fall right out of your head, right?”
Ignoring this, Piper went back to what she’d been doing before being so rudely interrupted by all the love. Making a list. She was big on bullet journaling. She’d had to be. Making notes and lists had saved her life more than once. And yes, she knew she could do it all on a notes app on her phone instead, but her brain wasn’t wired that way. Nope, she had to do everything the hard way and write that shit down by hand like in the Dark Ages. She flipped through some of her pages: Calendars, Grocery Lists, Future Baby Names (even though she didn’t plan on having babies), Passwords (okay, password, singular, since she always used the same one—CookiesAreLife123!).
And then there were some random entries:Life Rules
• Occasionally maybe make an effort to look nice.
• Don’t cut your own bangs no matter how sad you are.
• Never ever, EVER, under any circumstances fall in love. She also had a bucket list of wishes. Oh, and a secret secret bucket list of wishes . . .
Yeah, she clearly needed help. Or a little pill.
“New journal?” Jenna asked.
“Maybe.” Piper’s vices were simple. Basically, she was an office supply ho—a never-ending source of amusement to Jenna, because Piper was also a bit of a hot mess when it came to organization and neatness. Her purse, her car, her office, and also her kitchen always looked like a a disaster had just hit. But her journals . . . those were pristine.
“How many journals have you started and either lost or misplaced since I’ve known you—a million?”
Piper didn’t answer this on the grounds that she might incriminate herself.
Jenna pulled out the pack of stickers that were tucked into the journal. They were cute little thought bubbles with reminders like doc appointment, empty dishwasher, and caffeinate.
“I feel like stickers are cheating,” Jenna said.
“Bite your tongue, woman. Stickers are everything.” So were pens. And cute paper clips. And sticky notes . . .
“Come on. There’re far more important things than stickers.”
“Like?” Piper asked.
“Like food.”
“Okay, you’ve got me there.”
“And sex,” Jenna said. “And that should go above food, actually.”
“I’m going to take your word on that since it’s been a while.”
“Well, whose fault is that?” Jenna leaned in, trying to get a peek. “What’s today’s entry?”
“A list for figuring out what’s next on fixing up the property.” Piper and her siblings had inherited from their grandparents a house and some cottages on Rainbow Lake. “It still needs a lot of work. I’m in way over my head.”
“I know.” Jenna’s smile faded. “I hate that you’re going to sell and move away from Wildstone.”
Wildstone, California, was Piper’s hometown. Sort of. She’d moved here at age thirteen with her two younger siblings, Gavin and Winnie, to be raised by their grandparents. But in the end, Piper had done all the raising. It’d taken forever, but now, finally, her brother and sister were off living their own lives.
And hers could finally start. From Almost Just Friends by Jill Shalvis, published by William Morrow. Copyright © 2020 by Jill Shalvis. Reprinted courtesy of HarperCollinsPublishers https://www.harpercollins.com/9780062897800/almost-just-friends/

Description:
It’s love. Trust me.

After a lifetime on the move, Ivy Snow is an expert in all things temporary—schools, friends, and way too many Mr. Wrongs. Now that she owns a successful taco truck in San Francisco and an apartment to call home, Ivy’s reinvented life is on solid ground. And she’s guarded against anything that can rock it. Like the realities of a past she’s worked hard to cover up. And especially Kel O’Donnell. Too hot not to set off alarms, he screams temporary. If only his whispers weren’t so delightfully naughty and irresistible.

Kel, an Idaho sheriff and ranch owner, is on vacay, but Ivy’s a spicy reason to give his short-terms plans a second thought. Best of all, she’s a tonic for his untrusting heart, burned once and still in repair. But when Ivy’s past intrudes on a perfect romance, Kel fears that everything she’s told him has been a perfect lie. Now, if only Ivy’s willing to share, Kel will fight for a true love story.

Review:

Wrapped Up in You by Jill Shalvis is the 8th book in her wonderful Heartbreaker Bay series.  Having read all the books in this series, I could not wait to get my hands on this one, which I always expect from Jill Shalvis to be a fun wonderful read. Wrapped in You reads very well as a standalone, but why miss out on meeting the wonderful heroes/heroines that make this series so much fun; you should start at the beginning.

We met Ivy Snow, our heroine, in earlier books, but she was more of a background character, but now in Wrapped in You, she is the main character.  Ivy is very close friends with Sadie (last book heroine), and she runs a successful Taco Truck, which puts her into this fabulous group of friends we have come to love over the previous books.  Ivy has always been a loner, keeping secrets about her childhood, and her errant brother; but she is finally happy with her fun friends, her food truck, and moving into a new condo and finally finding a place to stay.

Kel O’Donnell, our hero, is Caleb’s cousin and new to this series.  Kel is on leave from his job as Sheriff in Idaho, as he was hurt and betrayed by one of his co-workers.  Kel meets Ivy when they guys were out for a run, and stopped at the Taco truck (where they always go); and he finds himself surprisingly attracted to Ivy, especially after she gives him a mouth burning hot taco.

Kel has his own family issues, as he has not gotten over his mom leaving him and his sister when they were very young, with them having to move to live with their grandparents.   When Kel visits his sister, she tries to tell him that his mom lives in the area; but he refuses to see or forgive her.  When he and Ivy begin to spend more time with each other, they both know there will be no future, as Kel plans to go back to Idaho.  Ivy tries to convince Kel to give his mother a chance to explain, but he is very stubborn, which leads to occasional disagreements between them, especially since Ivy’s brother turns out to be bad and causing her grief.

I really loved Ivy, who was a wonderful strong, independent heroine, and enjoyed watching her open herself to trust her friends and a possible relationship with Kel.   When she finally feels comfortable with Kel, the return of her bad brother puts her in a bad light, and Kel, who already has trust issues, causes them to break up.  Will they get back to together?

What follows is a heartwarming and emotional romance, with both Kel and Ivy each having difficult pasts.  Just when you think that Kel will prove to Ivy how much he cares for her; things will blow up to threaten their relationship.   This is a wonderful story of two flawed people, who find a way to each other, but both must rise above the past.

Wrapped Up in You was a fun, heartwarming, sexy, enjoyable read, with an outstanding cast of characters. It is always such a pleasure to spend time with all or our Heartbreaker Bay family.  If you love pure romance, friendships, a sexy couple, and are not reading Jill Shalvis, it is time for you to do so. Don’t start just with this book, as why miss out on the earlier wonderful fun heroes/heroines that make this series so much fun; you need to start at the beginning.

Chapter 1
Dig Deep
“Stay down.”
No, she would not stay down. Mostly because Ivy Snow didn’t know the meaning of the words. Not once in her hard-knock, scrappy life had she ever ‘stayed down.’ So she popped back up, using a spin and a roundhouse kick to level her opponent.
Her kickboxing partner and friend hit the mat and grinned from flat on her back. “That’s gotta be worth at least a donut. You’re buying.”
“Can’t,” Ivy said, eyeing the time. “I’ve gotta get to work.”
“Well, damn.” Sadie sat up and yawned. “I’ve still got a whole hour and a half before I have to do the same, which means I’m going back to bed. And if I’m lucky, Caleb’ll still be in it.”
Caleb was Sadie’s fiancé. Ignoring the little spurt of envy at the thought of having someone waiting in bed for her, Ivy hit the locker room to shower and change.
Fifteen minutes later, suitably beaten up by their four times a week kickboxing session, she left the gym. It was six a.m., her very least favorite time of the day, and she shivered unhappily. It was two weeks before Christmas, which for San Francisco meant it could be any weather at all. Today it was forty-five degrees and she’d forgotten her jacket. She was on a budget, a tight one, but it wasn’t worth freezing to death for a couple of bucks so she decided to forgo walking and hopped on a bus rather than turn into a human popsicle.
A guy in a suit, sneakers, and holding a huge energy drink took the seat next to her, giving her a not-so-discreet onceover. “’Morning,” he said with a charming smile.
And yes, she’d just felt a little wistful about not having anyone waiting for her in her bed, but that was fantasy, and Ivy was nothing if not grounded in reality. These days she prided herself on her sharply honed survivor skills, but in the past, she’d definitely failed herself in the man department. This was in good part thanks to a wanderlust lifestyle and a weakness for sexy grins that promised – and usually delivered – trouble.
Like this guy’s.
But that was all behind her now. She’d promised herself. So she gave him a vague, not-interested smile and turned away to look out the window. Rude? Probably. But she was calloused, and — as every guy she’d ever let in too close had complained — a tough nut to crack. The words cold and scary had also been thrown around.
She didn’t mind. She actually liked it, even if the image went completely against her Disney princess-like moniker, Ivy Snow. Maybe especially because it did. Her name had been a bone of contention for a long time, but it wasn’t like she’d named herself. Her mother had done that, reportedly on some good prescription meds at the time.
At her stop, she exited the bus and walked the last two blocks to work, getting a little happier with each step because one, exercise was over for the day, and two, she loved her job.
For as long as she could remember, her entire life had been transient. This was mostly thanks to a dad who’d taken off and a lounge singer mom who changed jobs like other women changed nail polish. As a result, Ivy had gone to a bunch of different schools, managing to slip through a whole bunch of cracks while she was at it. Luckily, she had been insanely curious and loved reading, and had taught herself most of the time. As a result, she was a pro chameleon and excelled at temporary. Temporary friends, temporary jobs, temporary life. It had suited her for a long time.
Until it hadn’t.
She’d woken up one day about a year ago and had realized she’d changed. Moving around no longer suited her and she was over living out of a backpack. So at the dubiously mature age of twenty-eight, she was trying a new lane. She’d settled in the Cow Hollow District of San Francisco, running a thing called The Taco Truck and living in an apartment that had her name on the lease.
Roots. After a lifetime of running, being invisible, and just barely getting by, she was growing roots. She was going for a life that until now had only existed for her on TV and in the movies, meaning friends and family, real family who’d stick with her through thick and thin. And maybe … maybe even someone to love.
Unnerving that she was actively working towards the very things that had terrified her for most of her life, but she’d decided she’d rather be scared shitless than live with regrets. So she’d learned to put a smile on her face, because everyone knew you had to fake it to make it, right?
The Taco Truck was parked in the alley of the Pacific Pier Building. She kept it there at night thanks to the fact that the owner of the building, Spence Baldwin, loved her food. And his grandpa, Old Man Eddie, who lived in the alley – by choice — had spent most of last year acting as a guard dog for her.
But just before winter had hit this year, Spence had finally talked his grandpa into taking an apartment in the building, so he no longer had eyes on her truck. Still, it felt safe here, and she trusted the space.
On work days, she pulled the truck out to the street at the entrance to the courtyard, always a gamble because her city permit hadn’t yet come through. Permits were incredibly difficult to come by, but she’d been told she was finally going to get one, and hopefully that was true.
Just looking at the truck had put a smile on her face – a real one. She moved the truck and had just parked for the day when her day’s deliveries arrived. She received her pre-ordered inventory and eyed the time. Six thirty. She opened at seven sharp, so she got started chopping ingredients, frying up meats, arranging the makings for the day’s menu. Her menu. She liked the work. Actually, she loved the work, and her boss wasn’t bad either. She smiled at that as she worked because she was the boss. She owned the truck.
Okay, so she was making payments on it, but she was actually in the black these days. Everything about that thought improved her day on the spot. Today she wasn’t going to worry about bills or permits. She was going to enjoy herself, her food, and her new goals.
She was comfortable here in her small but mighty space of seventy-five square feet, working her magic, making what she liked to think were the most delicious tacos in the bay area. It wasn’t an easy job. She spent just as much time prepping and being a mechanic as she did being a chef. And then there was the ordering and buying of all the necessary supplies, not to mention the bookkeeping, which often kept her up late into the night.
Her work was never done, but she was good with that. Hell, she was great with that. After spending most of her life at the mercy of others, she thrived on being independent and having no one tell her what to do or when to do it.
She was still prepping when she heard voices outside. She handled breakfast and lunch on her own, her two biggest meals. After that, her part time helper Jenny came in the afternoons to handle the much thinner dinner crowd and closing. For now, Ivy still had her CLOSED sign up, but the voices stopped right outside her truck. Men, at least two of them, possibly three. With a sigh, she opened the serving window and stuck her head out.
A trio of extremely hot guys dressed in running gear and looking hungry as hell glanced up from the menu board posted on the side of her truck. Ivy knew two of them, Caleb and Jake, both currently off the market, so she felt free to give them her flirtiest smile. “Sorry, guys, not open for another twenty minutes.”
Jake returned her flirty smile from his wheelchair while upping it another factor, which she knew was just a ploy to get his way.
“But you make the best food in the city,” he said sweetly, as if Ivy could be swayed by sweet. “And we’ve all gotta be at work by seven.”
Caleb stood at his side, and was a friend of Ivy’s, and also a savior as he’d helped her navigate the purchase of her truck when dealing with the previous owner had gotten tricky. “I’m pretty sure you said you owed me a favor,” he reminded her, always the negotiator.
Knowing the venture capitalist could talk anyone into just about anything, she laughed and gave in. “Fine. Figure out what you want and make it quick. But then we’re even, Caleb.”
They weren’t even. She owed him much more than an early breakfast, and they both knew it. But having gotten his way as he always did, he smiled. “The usual for me.”
“Me too,” Jake said.
Ivy nodded and turned her attention to the third man.
She’d never seen him before, she most certainly would have remembered. Like the others, he was in running gear that fit his leanly muscled bod, which he held in a way that suggested military or cop. And just like that, the always-on-alert scared little kid she’d once been sent an automatic danger warning to her brain.
But she was no longer helpless, she reminded herself. She no longer had to pretend to be tough and brave. She was tough and brave. So she kept her smile in place, forcing herself to relax. She had nothing to hide. Everything she did these days was on the up and up, she’d made sure of it.
And it wasn’t exactly a hardship to look at him. His smile certainly was heart-stopping as he added his charm to both Caleb and Jake’s. And there was considerable charm. He had dark eyes and dark hair cut short, and in spite of his smile, when those eyes met hers, they gave away nothing of his thoughts.
Yep. Cop, she thought, which was a damn shame.
#
Kel O’Donnell stood there in front of The Taco Truck, starving and aching like a son-of-a-bitch. Pushing his body on a five mile full out run hadn’t been the smartest of ideas after what he’d been through. But his more immediate problem was that if he didn’t get food and fast, his stomach was going to eat itself.
The woman inside the truck looked to him for his order. “And you?” she asked, her voice slightly amused, as if life wasn’t to be taken too seriously, especially while ordering tacos.
But he was taking this very seriously, as his hunger felt soul deep. “What do you suggest?”
This caused twin groans from his cousin Caleb and their longtime friend Jake, which Kel ignored.
Not his server though. She quirked a single brow, the small gesture making him feel more than he had in months. Certainly since his life had detonated several months ago when he’d chased after a suspect on foot, only to be hit by the getaway car, getting himself punted a good fifteen feet into the air. That had hurt. But what had hurt more was his perp turning out to be a dirty cop. And not any dirty cop, but a long time friend, which had nearly cost him life and career.
But hell, at least neither were on the line this time. It was just a pretty woman giving him some cute, sexy ‘tude while waiting on him to decide between an avocado and bacon tacos, or spicy green eggs and ham tacos.
“You’re going to have to excuse my dumbass cousin, Ivy,” Caleb said. “Kel hasn’t lived in San Francisco for a long time and doesn’t know that you’ve got the best food truck in all of Cow Hollow. Hell, in the whole bay area.”
“It’s true,” Jake said and nudged Kel, and with Jake in the wheelchair, he got the nudge right in the back of the knee and just about went down.
“Everything on the menu,” Jake said, “and I do mean everything is gold. Trust me, it’ll melt in your mouth and make you want to drop to your knees and beg Ivy here to marry you.”
Ivy sent Jake the sweetest smile Kel had ever seen. Then those compelling eyes were back on him, the sweet completely gone. She leaned out her serving window a little bit, bracing her weight on her elbows. Her hair was the color of fire, a stunning pile of red held back by an elf headband, which left a few strands falling around her face, framing it. Her apron read: I don’t wanna taco ‘bout it. “What do I suggest?” she repeated.
“Yeah.” Just looking at her, he could feel himself relax for the first time in … way too long. Something about her did that to him. Instant chemistry. He hadn’t felt it often in his life and it always ended up a train wreck, so why the hell he felt relaxed, he had no idea. But it had him flashing another smile. “How about you pick for me.”
Her lips quirked at that. “Fair warning — I like things hot.”
“I love things hot,” he said.
Jake just grinned. “Aw man, she’s gonna eat you up and spit you out. I’m so happy.”
“Shh,” Caleb said. “I don’t want to miss him getting his ass handed to him.”
Ivy just cocked her head at Kel. “Think you can handle the heat?”
“Oh yeah.”
“Five minutes.” And she shut the window on them.
They moved to one of the two picnic tables at the entrance to the courtyard in front of them, where they sat to wait for their food. Caleb looked at Kel and shook his head. “Man, as much as I enjoy seeing you get your ego squashed, I feel duty bound to warn you. Whatever’s making you smile, it’s never going to happen. Ivy’s not the girl you have fun with and walk away from. And plus, she hates cops.”
“Agreed,” Jake said. “You’ve got a better shot at stealing Sadie away from Caleb. And good luck with that. Your cousin’s woman is batshit crazy over him, God knows why.”
Caleb just smiled, apparently not feeling the need to defend his relationship.
Kel was happy for him. Very happy. Caleb hadn’t given his heart away … ever. And for good reasons, which Kel had hated for him. “About time you found someone who deserves you.”
Caleb was quiet a moment. “I like having you here,” he said, kind enough to leave out the tone of recrimination. It’d been a long time, too long, which had been all Kel’s doing. He’d spent the first ten years of his life here in the city, he and his sister and his parents. They’d lived next door to his aunt and her kids, including Caleb. Kel hadn’t realized at the time, but they’d all been poor as dirt, even though his parents had always managed to make it seem like they’d had everything they’d needed.
Then his mom had destroyed that happy illusion with a single, shattering mistake, creating a huge rift none of them had recovered from. Two years later had come yet another blow. His dad had died, and Kel and his older sister Remy had gone to Idaho to be raised by their grandparents.
It’d sucked.
“You see Remy yet?” Caleb asked.
Kel’s sister had moved back here to San Francisco after getting married last year. And no, he hadn’t seen her yet. And yes, he was stalling.
“Okay … how about your mom?” Caleb asked.
Kel slid him a look.
Caleb raised his hands. “Hey, just asking.”
“Uh huh. Do you ask all your employees such personal questions?”
“No, just my brother.”
“I’m your cousin.”
“You’re my brother,” Caleb said with meaning.
Kel sighed and looked over at Jake.
Jake shrugged. “He likes to adjust facts to suit him. But you knew that already.”
Ivy came out of the truck with three baskets. She served Jake first, then Caleb, and finally Kel. She handed him his basket and stood there at his side, a tiny pixie of a woman in that sassy apron, elf headband, and painted on jeans faded to a buttery softness. Her boots were serious and kickass, and because he was a very sick man, they turned him on.
Since she was clearly going nowhere until he tried her food, he took a bite of what looked like the most amazing breakfast taco he’d ever seen and … almost died. Spicy was an understatement. Holy hell hot was an understatement. But it was also the best thing he’d ever tasted, even if his tongue was numb.
Ivy smiled at him. “Still think you can handle the heat?”
Jake and Caleb were doubled over laughing, the asses. “I’m not a cop,” he managed to wheeze, holding her gaze while he took another bite. And another. No doubt, he was going to eat her food the entire three weeks he was here. If he lived that long.
“He’s a sheriff and ranch owner in Idaho,” Caleb said. “So … kind of a cop.”
“Also kind of a cowboy,” Jake added ever so helpfully.
Kel rolled his still watering eyes. His grandparents had left him and Remy their ranch, which he oversaw, but had employees handling the day to day operations since his day job was more like a 24/7 job. “I’m just a guy on vacay,” he croaked out. The more accurate term would have been assigned slash medical leave, but hell if he was going to share that. Or the fact that his still healing broken ribs ached like a bitch, as did the deep bone bruising he’d suffered down the entire right side of his body from being pitched into the air by a moving vehicle.
Caleb snorted. “You don’t do vacay. As evidenced by the fact you agreed to work for me for the entire two weeks you’re here. I needed him,” he said to Ivy. “He’s got serious skills. He’s going to manage security on several large projects, including my most recently acquired building, the one being renovated into condos.” He looked at Kel. “Ivy’s going to buy one with her brother, who’s an antiquities specialist. It’s a great investment,” he said like a proud parent, even though at thirty-two, he couldn’t have been more than five years or so older than Ivy.
“Actually, it might just be me investing,” Ivy said. “Brandon just got into a deal on the east coast I was telling you about.”
“The auction house job.”
“Yes, and it’s going to keep him busy for a while, so…” She shrugged. “I told him I’d go after this myself.”
“That’s too bad,” Caleb said. “Was looking forward to meeting him.”
Kel stopped chewing because something in Ivy’s tone had just set off his bullshit radar. She was either lying or stretching the truth, but his eyes were still watering and his throat was burning or he might’ve joined the conversation.
Ivy reached out as if to take away his basket, but he held firm to it and kept eating. He was starting to sweat and he couldn’t feel his lips, but he also couldn’t get enough.
“Okay, Cowboy, it’s your funeral,” she said, and he couldn’t tell if she was impressed or horrified.
A few more people were milling around her truck now, and she eyed her watch.
“They start lining up earlier every day,” Caleb said.
“Hey, Ivy,” one of the guys who was waiting called out. “The fuzz! They’re coming around the corner!”
“Crap!” Ivy ran towards her truck, yelling to the people standing in line, “I’ll be back in ten minutes. If you wait and save my spot, I’ll give you a discount!” And then she slapped the window and door closed and roared off down the street.
A minute later a cop drove by slowly, but didn’t stop. When he was gone, the group of people who’d been lining up for tacos stepped into the empty parking spot Ivy had left.
Not ten seconds later, a car came along and honked at the people standing in the spot. “Get out of my way,” the driver yelled.
No one budged.
The car window lowered and a hand emerged, flipping everyone the bird.
This didn’t make anyone move either, and finally the guy swore and drove off in a huff.
“What the hell?” Kel asked.
“She’s not supposed to be on the street before seven,” Jake said.
“I’m working on getting her a city permit,” Caleb said. “They’re extremely hard to get.”
Kel was boggled. “But … those people are blocking the street. They could get a ticket.”
“Thought you weren’t a cop,” Caleb said, looking amused.
Kel shook his head and went back to his tacos, and for a guy who believed in the law, when the incredible burst of flavors once again hit his tongue, he thought maybe he could understand the flagrant disregard of it in this one case.

The Lemon Sisters by Jill Shalvis – a Review

The Lemon Sisters by Jill Shalvis – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / iTunes / Google Play / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
When Brooke’s older sister, Mindy, shows up at her door with her three kids in tow, she barely recognizes her sibling who looks like she’s on the verge of a total breakdown. While adventurous, wanderlust Brooke was always the problem child, eager to slip free of Wildstone and its small-town constraints, Mindy was the golden child, who never had a hair out of place or a GPA below 4.0. The Mindy that arrives at Brooke’s apartment however, is a far cry from the ever-perfect doctor’s wife.

Brooke’s further stunned when Mindy asks to trade places with her for a few days so she can pick up her pieces and put herself back together. What Mindy doesn’t realize is that Brooke is just as broken. Her sister needs her though, so Brooke takes the kids and returns to Wildstone.

But how does one go home after seven years away and what feels like a lifetime of secrets? It doesn’t take long for Brooke to come face-to-face with her past, in the form of one tall, dark, sexy mistake. But Garrett’s no longer interested, or so he says. Only his words don’t match his actions, leaving Brooke feeling things she long ago shoved deep.

The sisters begin to wonder if the childhood taunts were true, are they lemons in life? In love? True or not, they know one thing—you can’t run far enough to outpace your demons. And when long-dead secrets surface, they’ll have to overcome their differences and learn that sometimes the one person who can help you the most is the one you never thought to ask.

Review:

The Lemon Sisters by Jill Shalvis is the 3rd book in her Wildstone series.  I have read all the books in this series, and not only enjoyed them all, but if you have not read the previous books, The Lemon Sisters reads great as a standalone.   Once again, I love reading Jill Shalvis’s books, as she is one of the best at romances. The Lemon Sisters is about a family that has become broken, with secrets and heartache trying to heal and mend.

We meet Brooke Lemon, our heroine, who lives and works in LA.  After a late night, Brooke is woken up very early with banging on the door of her apartment.  To her shock, her visitor is her sister, Mindy, whom she has not seen in a few years; on top of that, Mindy has brought her three kids.  Brooke will find out that Mindy is at wits end, totally exhausted and just about having a nervous breakdown. To give her sister a break to rest, she offers to take the three kids back to Wildstone (which she has not been for 7 years) and take care of the kids for a few days, while Mindy will stay at Brooke’s place and rest and calm down.

When back at Wildstone, Brooke is determined to right some wrongs when she left years before.  Brooke had come off a major accident by a helicopter crash, and continues to have nightmares about it; which causes her PTSD in attempting to work as a photographer for onsite work, since she will not fly or do high heights. One of those that she wants to make amends is with Garrett Montgomery, her boyfriend at the time; whom she walked away from and left him with no explanation.

Garrett lives next door to Mindy’s house, and is very good friends with the family; almost immediately they come face to face with each other.  Brooke has not forgotten Garrett, and can sense her feelings for him are still there.  But Brooke hides how she is still broken, and does not want to resume anything with Garrett; she just wants to explain to him why she left.  While Mindy is enjoying her freedom living in Brooke’s fancy place, and her coworkers, Brooke is running around taking care of her kids.  The kids were wild and fun.  Garrett goes out of his way to help Brooke with everything, at the same time hiding his true feelings; as he does not want to get hurt again.

While Brooke and Garrett slowly deal with the past and the present, Mindy returns home after a week, and despite her break, is still having issues dealing with her everyday life.  Linc, her husband, is a workaholic, but he still loves Mindy. It will be Brooke, who can’t fix her own life, who will talk to Linc to find more time to help Mindy.  Personally, I was not really a fan of Mindy, though I understood her being buried with three active children, and other pressures, causing her to fall apart.  I felt that Mindy was a bit selfish staying away and leaving Brooke longer than anticipated, as well as assuming her husband was having an affair, which he wasn’t; Linc to me was pretty great.  The story for both couples would take work and willingness to change things.   Will Linc be able to change his work life to help Mindy?  Will Mindy learn to stop micromanaging and trust her family?  Will Brooke come to terms with her issues of the past and move forward with confidence?  Will Garrett allow himself to love Brooke again?

What follows is a heartwarming story about family and loves in different many ways. It is about getting beyond the hardships and allowing themselves to heal; to open up and move on and give themselves another chance to make amends.  I will say that I absolutely loved how the story ends.  The Lemon Sisters was very well written by Jill Shalvis.

Review:

Playing for Keeps by Jill Shalvis is the 7th book in her wonderful Heartbreaker Bay series.  Being a huge fan of Shalvis’ Heartbreaker Bay series, I looked forward to reading Playing for Keeps.  As always with this series and Shalvis, I loved this fun sweet wonderful story, which reads very well as a standalone.

Caleb Parker, our hero, is a wealthy successful entrepreneur, who is also very close to his family, especially his sisters, whom also work with him.  Caleb and his sisters made a wonderful  loyal family that protects each other.

Sadie Lane, our heroine, is working two jobs to make ends meet ( tattoo artist & spa).  Sadie is as tough as they come, always has the last and at times sarcastic response; as years before her heart was broken by a failed relationship, and refuses to allow herself to get hurt again. She has a history, which she keeps private and a family she is not close to.

One stormy rainy night, Caleb comes across a three legged puppy, and tries to catch.  Sadie, who knows Caleb as a local businessman, tries to help him catch the dog.  Together they rescue Lollipop, and both decide they want to keep the dog. It was so cute how Lollipop, knew she was safe in their hands, and gave them both affection.  The two come to an agreement to co own the dog, which opens the way for them to get to know each other better; it was fun to watch them take turns with Lollipop, with each helping each other.

Caleb was a fantastic hero, smart, sweet, caring, loyal and a hottie all the way.  Sadie was completely different, as she was independent, stubborn, sarcastic, unwilling to allow herself to get close to anyone.  They were different like night and day, especially with him having lots of money and Sadie just making ends meet.  But they both loved Lollipop (so did I), and slowly their attraction for each other became very steamy.  I loved Caleb from the start, but as much as I did like Sadie, her behavior was constant, and at times annoying how she treated Caleb; even if I did understand the wall she built from her sad childhood, and her inability to trust her true feelings.

What follows is a heartwarming and emotional romance, with both Caleb and Sadie having difficult, but different childhood.  Just when you think that Caleb will prove to Sadie how much he loves her, things will blow up to threaten their relationship.  Caleb’s sisters always protect him, especially in trying to investigate new people in his life, which will become a major misunderstanding.  Will Caleb convince Sadie to trust him, and open her heart?

As I have said before, Heartbreaker Bay is a great series to enjoy, and I suggest you start with the first book.  Playing for Keeps was a fun, heartwarming,  sexy, enjoyable read,  with an outstanding cast of characters. If you love pure romance, friendships, a sexy couple, and are not reading Jill Shalvis, it is time for you to do so. Don’t start just with this book, as why miss out on the earlier wonderful fun heroes/heroines that make this series so much fun; you need to start at the beginning.

Sadie.”
She shook her head.
“Look at me. Please?”
It was the damn please that had her opening her eyes. He’d closed the gap so that if she so much as took a breath, they’d be touching.
So she did just that. She took a deep breath, and then their bodies were up against each other, his warm and hard. Everywhere. “What’s happening?” she whispered.
“I believe you’re deciding between kicking me in the nuts and kissing me.” One side of his mouth curved very slightly as he lifted their still joined hands above her head, against the wall.
“But that last part might just be in my dreams.”
“Yes,” she whispered.
“Yes, it’s just in my dreams?”
She meant to say yes again, she really did.
She even opened her mouth to say it, because this was insane, this incredible . . . craving she had for him. It made no sense. Less than no sense, and yet . . .
She went up on tiptoe and touched her mouth to his.

Hot Winter Nights by Jill Shalvis – Review, Excerpt & Giveaway

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository / iBooks / Google

Description:
Who needs mistletoe?

Most people wouldn’t think of a bad Santa case as the perfect Christmas gift. Then again, Molly Malone, office manager at Hunt Investigations, isn’t most people, and she could really use a distraction from the fantasies she’s been having since spending the night with her very secret crush, Lucas Knight. Nothing happened, not that Lucas knows that — but Molly just wants to enjoy being a little naughty for once…

Whiskey and pain meds for almost-healed bullet wounds don’t mix. Lucas needs to remember that next time he’s shot on the job, which may be sooner rather than later if Molly’s brother, Joe, finds out about them. Lucas can’t believe he’s drawing a blank on his (supposedly) passionate tryst with Molly, who’s the hottest, smartest, strongest woman he’s ever known. Strong enough to kick his butt if she discovers he’s been assigned to babysit her on her first case. And hot enough to melt his cold heart this Christmas.

Review:

Hot Winter Nights by Jill Shalvis is the 6th book in her wonderful Heartbreaker Bay series.  Having read all the books in this series, I could not wait to get my hands on this one, which I always expect from Jill Shalvis, was fun wonderful read. This book does read very well as a standalone, but why miss out on the earlier wonderful fun heroes/heroines that make this series so much fun; you need to start at the beginning.

Molly Malone, our heroine, is the office manager at Hunt Investigations.   Archer (previous hero, and owner of Hunt Investigations) knows Molly’s desire to handle cases, but he has no intention of allowing her to be in any kind of danger.   When Molly neighbors approach her about a case of “a bad santa”, who they suspect is hiding money, and not paying them to be elf’s.

Lucas Knight, our hero and an investigator for Hunt, wakes up after a getting drunk the night before to see Molly in bed with him.  Lucas doesn’t remember anything, and is concerned that he is in trouble, since Molly is Joe’s (his partner) sister.   Nothing happened, but Molly enjoys teasing Lucas about their night together.  When Archer finds out that Molly is going to work on helping her neighbors, he enlists Lucas to watch over her.  As they begin to work together, Lucas finds himself falling hard for Molly, and Molly already has a huge crush on him.   There chemistry together was sizzling, and in a short time, they become friends with benefits.  Though they both know their true feelings has nothing to do with friendship, as it has escalated to love for them. Each has their own personal issues that threaten to block their relationship.   In the midst of this sweet romance, the case of ‘bad santa’ puts both of them in danger.

What follows is a sweet romance, as well as a very good mystery.  There are some dangerous intense situations with both Molly and Lucas along the way.  What makes this even better, are their friends, whom we have come to love over the previous 5 books .

Lucas and Molly was a great couple, very hot together; lots of fun to watch them falling hard for each other.  As I have said before, Heartbreaker Bay is a great series to enjoy, and I suggest you start with the first book.  Hot Winter Nights was a fun, exciting, sexy, enjoyable read,  with an outstanding cast of characters and a bit of mystery. If you love romance, humor, friendships, a sexy couple, and are not reading Jill Shalvis, it is time for you to do so.

It took Lucas Knight longer than it should have to realize he had a woman in his bed, but to be fair, he had a bitch of a hangover. Even worse than that, last night was a blur, prompting him to take quick stock. One, there was a bundle of sweet, soft curves against him. Two, his head was currently threatening to secede from the United States Of Lucas. And three, his side hurt like … well, like he’d been shot.
It’d been two weeks since he’d gotten caught in some crossfire on the job and he hadn’t yet been cleared for more than light duty – something he’d obviously managed to ignore last night given that he was palming a nice, warm, feminine ass.
Think, man.
Straining his brain, he remembered taking a pain med before going to O’Riley’s Pub to meet up with some friends. A client had been there, someone he’d recently helped save from a multi-million dollar corporate espionage. The guy had ordered shots to toast to Lucas and … shit. Knowing better than to mix pain meds and alcohol, he’d hesitated, but everyone had been waiting on him, glasses hoisted in the air. Thinking just one shot couldn’t hurt anything, he’d knocked back the drink.
Clearly, he’d been wrong and it’d been enough to mess him up big time, something he hadn’t been in years, not since his brother Josh had been killed. Shoving that away for another time – or never — Lucas cracked open one eye, but when his retina was stabbed by a streak of sunlight glaring in through the window, he immediately slammed it shut it again. Taking a deep breath, he told himself to suck it up and opened both eyes this time, learning two additional facts.
He was naked and completely uncovered.
And the woman snugged up at his side was rolled up in his comforter like a burrito.
What. The. Hell.

Description:
Six months after Lanie Jacobs’ husband’s death, it’s hard to imagine anything could deepen her sense of pain and loss. But then Lanie discovers she isn’t the only one grieving his sudden passing. A serial adulterer, he left behind several other women who, like Lanie, each believe she was his legally wedded wife.

Rocked by the infidelity, Lanie is left to grapple with searing questions. How could she be so wrong about a man she thought she knew better than anyone? Will she ever be able to trust another person?  Can she even trust herself?

Desperate to make a fresh start, Lanie impulsively takes a job at the family-run Capriotti Winery. At first, she feels like an outsider among the boisterous Capriottis. With no real family of her own, she’s bewildered by how quickly they all take her under their wing and make her feel like she belongs. Especially Mark Capriotti, a gruffly handsome Air Force veteran turned deputy sheriff who manages to wind his way into Lanie’s cold, broken heart—along with the rest of the clan.

Everything is finally going well for her, but the arrival of River Brown changes all that. The fresh-faced twenty-one-year old seems as sweet as they come…until her dark secrets come to light—secrets that could destroy the new life Lanie’s only just begun to build.

Review:

Rainy Day Friends by Jill Shalvis is the second book in her wonderful Wildstone series.    I know when I read a book by Jill Shalvis, I will enjoy every moment of it.  Rainy Days Friends was so good, I have to say perhaps this is my favorite book by Shalvis.

Lanie Jacobs, our heroine, arrives in Wildstone to take a temporary job as a graphic designer at Capriotti Winery.   Lanie is trying to recover first from her husband’s death 6 months ago, and then upon learning that he also had multiple wives (though she is the legitimate heir).   When Lanie arrives at the winery, she automatically meets all the members of the Capriotti family, who are gathered for their daily lunch break.  She is shocked to see how they all welcome her, and how boisterous they all are, which is different than the life she has led, especially having built walls around herself to protect her from being hurt again.  But Lanie quickly begins to enjoy her job, and being around this wonderful family.

Mark Capriotti, is the town deputy sheriff, and a former marine, who came home to take care of his two young girls, who were abandoned by his then wife.  Mark loves his girls, and wants only to devote his life to them and his family, not planning on allowing another woman into his life.  Mark finds himself attracted to Lanie, but she is very cold and distant to him, which makes him even more curious as to why she shuts herself off.

Slowly Lanie will begin to settle in, becoming comfortable with the entire Capriotti clan, including helping Mark with the two girls. Though she feels unlovable, she begins to feel her attraction to Mark growing, and soon an affair will start.  They were a sizzling couple that had us rooting hard for them, though Lanie still had her walls and Mark did not plan on falling in love.  Best laid plans do not always work out.  J

Enter River Brown, a young pregnant girl, who secretly was trying to find Lanie.  River was one of the wives, and was in desperate shape financially.  She keeps the secret when she meets Lanie, and likes her, and takes a job at the winery, since the Capriotti family is simply awesome.  Lanie will help River and in a short time they become friends, until River ends up telling her the truth.  Then all hell breaks loose as the secret is exposed, and the Capriotti’s (and Mark) learn the truth about Lanie’s husband.  Though everyone sympathizes with her, Lanie is ashamed and distances herself, pushing to leave her job sooner than planned, even though she knows she is falling in love with Mark.

What follows is a heartwarming story that pulls on your emotions throughout.   Though she still plans to leave the winery, it is River’s birth and sickness that will bring Lanie and River trying to mend bad feelings.   I loved Lanie, especially how she was with the two little girls, but at times I wanted to smack her, when she tried to say she wasn’t worthy of Mark.  Mark was a great father, as well as being a hot hunk, and he fell hard for Lanie.  Will he be able to convince Lanie to stay?

The best thing about Rainy Day Friends was all and I mean all the characters in this book were simply fantastic.   I loved all of them, as the Capriotti family was so was so much fun and loving.   I could not get enough of this family, and hope Shalvis continues her Wildstone family with more about the Capriottis.

Rainy Day Friends was a fantastic story surrounding two broken women brought together by betrayal, but most of all it is a wonderful heartwarming story of love, forgiveness, moving on and family.  Jill Shalvis once again gives us a fabulous story, with a sensational cast of characters.  The Capriotti family was so awesome, I look forward to seeing more of them in future books. If you love pure romance, family oriented, than look no further than the master, Jill Shalvis and Rainy Day Friends.

Anxiety Girl, able to jump to the worst conclusion in a single bound!

Most of the time Karma was a bitch, but every once in awhile she could be surprisingly nice, even kind. Lanie Jacobs, way past overdue for both of those things, told herself this was her time. Seize the day and all that, and drawing a deep breath, she exited the highway at Wildstone.
The old wild-west California town was nestled in the rolling hills between the Pacific Coast and wine/ranching country. She’d actually grown up not too far from here, though it felt like a lifetime ago. The road was narrow and curvy, and since it’d rained earlier, she added tricky and slick to her growing list of issues. She was already white-knuckling a sharp turn when a kamikaze squirrel darted into her lane, causing her to nearly swerve into oncoming traffic before remembering the rules of country driving.
Never leave your lane; not for weather, animals, or even God himself.
Luckily the squirrel reversed direction, but before she could relax a trio of deer bounded across the road. “Run, Bambi,” she cried, hitting her brakes, and by the skin of their collective teeth, they all missed each other.
Sweating, nerves sizzling like live wires, she finally turned onto Capriotti Lane and parked as she’d been instructed.
It took a moment for her pulse to come down from stroke level. She’d been taught anti-anxiety techniques, but she’d never quite figured out how to make any of them work while in the actual throes of an anxiety attack.
It’s all good she told herself but because she wasn’t buying what she was selling, she had to force herself out of the car like she was a five year old starting kindergarten instead of being thirty and simply facing a brand new job. Given all she’d been through, this should be easy, even fun. But sometimes adulthood felt like the vet’s office and she was the dog excited for the car ride — only to find out the real destination.
Shaking her head, she strode across the parking lot. It was April, which meant the rolling hills to the east were green and lush and the Pacific Ocean to the west looked like a surfer’s dream, all of it so gorgeous it could’ve been a postcard. A beautiful smoke screen over her not-so-beautiful past. The air was scented like a really expensive sea-and-earth candle, though all Lanie could smell was her forgotten hopes and dreams. With wood chips crunching under her shoes, she headed through the entrance beneath which was a huge wooden sign that read:

Capriotti Winery, from our fields to your table…

Her heart sped up. Nerves, of course, the bane of her existence. But after a very crappy few years, she was changing her path. For once in her godforsaken life, something was going to work out for her. This was going to work out for her.

She was grimly determined.

Description:
This summer, romance blooms again in Wildstone!

After a difficult few years, Tilly Adams is ready for life to start going right. Though she has a case of first day nerves teaching art at the local community college, she knows it isn’t anything a few snuggles from her rescue puppy won’t cure. Until she sees Dylan Scott again, her one-time BFF and first love sitting in the front row.

Dylan knows he should’ve left well enough alone, but when he sees Tilly living her dream, he can’t help but make contact. Ten years ago, he left Wildstone and everything in it behind, including Tilly. He had his reasons, but now he wants her back in his life, anyway he can get her.

When Tilly agrees to design the logo for Dylan’s new helicopter touring company, it’s business only…until she finds herself falling into his arms once again. Can she possibly open her heart back up to the only man who’s ever broken it? But soon they’re both realizing the truth – love always deserves a second chance.

Review:

The Good Luck Sister by Jill Shalvis is a novella in her wonderful Wildstone series.  I have said this before, no one does pure sweet romances, with characters we always fall in love with, better then Jill Shalvis. I always can count on enjoying her stories, and being happy when it ends.

Tilly Adams, our heroine, is now all grown up, 10 years after the last book ended.   She is starting to teach art at the local college, and is very close to Quinn, Mick, their daughter Natalie.  It was great to see Quinn and Mick again, and nice to see Quinn is very much pregnant.   On her first day at the college, Tilly decides to bring her little puppy, Leo with her.   When the class begins, she sees a familiar face that she has not seen in years, Dylan Scott, the boy who broke her heart and left her.

Dylan has returned home to Wildstone with his two friends, as they start a new helicopter business.   Dylan wanted to see Tilly again, but knew she would not talk to him, so he decided to join up for the art class.  Tilly tries to ignore him, though Dylan will try to break through with an offer for her to create a logo for their new business.   When she decides to visit, she meets his two partners, Penn and Ric, and overhears them talking about why he left all those years ago.  His friend hints at the reason, and Tilly will push and insist he tell her the truth.  Slowly, as they both try to be honest with each other, their romance will rekindle.

In between the start of their second chance romance, there are flashbacks to years before, when Dylan was abused by his father, and Tilly was always there for him.  Dylan’s love for Tilly was strong, but he felt like a failure, and knew Tilly had a promising future.  Though things were difficult, he was able to come to terms with his life, spending time in the military and creating their helicopter business.  Now all he wants is to convince Tilly he still loves her.  Will he succeed in getting her to forgive him?

What follows is a sweet slow built second chance romance, with a wonderful couple that we were praying for.  Leo, the sweet little puppy, was a riot; as every time Dylan would get close too Tilly, he would bark at him.  I loved little Leo, her fierce defender. So cute.   I loved every time when Quinn was around, and especially when she was ready to have the baby.  So happy to see how much closer Tilly and Quinn have become.

Since this is a novella, I do not want to tell too much more. The Good Luck Sister was a sweet, emotional, and fun story.  Tilly and Dylan were great together, and I’m glad Shalvis took the time to give us their story, knowing after Lost and Found Sisters left us wanting more of them.   As the norm with Jill Shalvis, every book is a fun and happy read, and you can never go wrong reading her books.  This a a series you should be reading, if you have not started, I suggest you start with Lost and Found Sisters, The Good Luck Sister and the soon to be released Rainy Day Friends, coming in June.

Chapter 1

“I’ve finished my free trial of adulthood and am no longer interested, so please cancel my subscription.” From The Mixed Up Files of Tilly’s journal.

Tilly Adams sat in the vet’s office staring at the doctor in shock. “Say that again?”
Dr. Janet Lyons smiled. “I think Leo faked being sick. Probably so you’d stay home from work today.”
Tilly looked down at Leo. “You do know he’s a dog, right?”
All six pounds of him smiled up at her. About a month ago, she found him on a street corner hiding beneath a bus bench; wet, dirty, cold, hungry and matted. He’d been Dobby meets Gremlin meets neglected, abused Care Bear. Tilly had looked around for an adult, and then had to remind herself that at twenty-five years old, she was legal herself. So then she’d searched for an adultier adult, but she’d been the only one in sight.
So she’d scooped the little guy up and had brought him to the SPCA, who’d said he was about five weeks old, a possible Maltipoo, which meant he came by his care bear look naturally. He was malnutritioned and suffering from mange. They’d said they’d do what they could, and Tilly had turned to go. That had been when she’d seen all the eyes on her from an endless row of cages … and she’d realized her care bear would soon be sitting in one too. Then she’d heard herself offer to foster him until they found him a forever home.
They’d found him one too. Tilly had signed the adoption papers last weekend in spite of the fact that just that morning he’d escaped his crate, eaten her favorite sneakers, destroyed her favorite pillow, and then yakked up the stuffing from the pillow.
He was a destructo of the highest magnitude, and something else too. He had no idea how small he was. He went after her sister Quinn’s twenty-plus pound cat and her neighbor’s hundred pound black lab with the same fierce, fearless gusto. Turned out, the little guy had a bad case of small-man syndrome, which was how he’d earned his name.
Leo, short for Napoleon.
And now on top of Leo’s impressive chewing skills, his escape artist skills, and his ability to get up on her bed and yet still not understand why stepping in his own poop was annoying, he had a new skill.
He’d faked being sick.
Proud of himself, Leo smiled up at her. Smiled. An hour ago he’d been coughing and limping and acting all sorts of odd. Now he just kept smiling up at her while sending her meaningful glances at the open dog biscuit bin between her and the doctor.
Dr. Lyons laughed and gave him one.
“Dogs can’t fake sick,” Tilly said while Leo inhaled the biscuit whole before licking the floor to make sure he got all the crumbs. “Can they?”
Dr. Lyons scooped him up and gave him a kiss on his adorable snout. “Yours did.”
Tilly sighed. It was too early for this. She’d had a crazy late night. Not hanging at Whiskey River, the local bar and grill. Not at a club with friends. Not working on her designs for he upcoming graphic art showing.
Nope, she’d been on a serious stress bender — a marathon of Game Of Thrones. She hadn’t fallen asleep until after two and her alarm had interrupted her in the middle of a really great dream starring Jon Snow.
Dr. Lyons handed Leo over. He immediately snuggled into the crook of Tilly’s neck and dammit, her cold heart melted on the spot and she hugged him close. “You’re sure he’s okay? He was coughing. And then he limped funny. And then he wouldn’t eat.”
“But he hasn’t coughed once that I’ve seen. And he’s not limping either. And you said all his food vanished while you took a quick shower.”
“Yes,” Tilly said.
Dr. Lyons waited for her to catch up.
Tilly sighed. “He really did fake me out.”
