Review:

About that Kiss by Jill Shalvis is the 5th book in her wonderful Heartbreaker Bay series. Having read all the books in this series, I looked forward to reading this one, and once again Jill Shalvis gives us another winner.

Kylie, our heroine, is a woodworker, having been trained by her now deceased grandfather to create beautiful wood work designs.  While working in the store, she sees Joe (our hero) come in; Joe is another member of Archer’s Security firm, and they all share the same friends, though Joe and Kylie really do not get along.  During an engagement party not too long ago, Joe and Kylie had a bit too much to drink, and they had a powerful sizzling kiss.  But since then, she has not heard from him, until he came to the store.  Joe wants to buy a mirror that Kylie created for his sister’s birthday, but it was already promised to someone else and Kylie, giving him the cold shoulder, tells him that she does not have time to do another.

When Kylie goes home that night, she finds an envelope under her door; with a picture of a treasured wood penguin that her grandfather had given her. Kylie knows that someone has stolen this from her, but she has no idea why, only that she wants it back desperately, as it is the only thing she has of her grandfather.   She decides to go to Joe, to help her find it, and promises payment in the form a new mirror for Molly, his sister.  Joe reluctantly accepts, but is surprised when Kylie insists to go with him as they investigate the possible culprits.

Kylie and Joe both have their own issues, with neither wanting to become involved. Both of them blame themselves for putting loved ones in danger; Kylie for her grandfather, who died in a fire; Joe, saving his sister from a gang he was involved with when he was younger. They are both scorching together, as their romance does heat up, as they spend more time together.  But they are also both stubborn and independent.

What follows is a sweet romance, as well as a very good mystery as to who is threatening Kylie.  There are some twists and surprises along the way that will change things for both of them.  What makes this even better, are their friends, whom we have come to love over the previous 4 books.  I also adored Kylie’s dog .  Cute.

Joe and Kylie were a great couple, very hot together; lots of fun to watch them falling hard for each other.  As I have said before, Heartbreaker Bay is a great series to enjoy, and I suggest you start with the first book.  About That Kiss was a fun, at times exciting, sexy, enjoyable read  with an outstanding cast of characters, cute dog, and a bit of mystery. If you love romance, and are not reading Jill Shalvis, it is time for you to do so.

Description:
It’s Christmastime again in Heartbreaker Bay!

When Sean O’Riley shows up at the Hartford Bed & Breakfast for his older brother’s bachelor weekend, he’s just hoping to make it through the weekend. What he’s not expecting is to come face to face with the woman he lost his virginity to a decade ago—a woman he’s never really forgotten.

The last time Lotti Hartford saw Sean, she told him she loved him while he said nothing. Now, ten years later, she’s just looking for a good time. For once, she wants to be the wild and free one, and Sean – the good time guy – is the perfect candidate.

But as the weekend continues, Sean realizes that after a lifetime of being the hook-up king, he’s ready to find happily-ever-after, and he wants it with Lotti. But will she open her heart to him again? As Christmas sweeps through the little B&B, he can only hope love and magic are in the air

Review:

Holiday Wishes by Jill Shalvis is a Chrismas novella in her wonderful Heartbreaker Bay series.  Sean O’Reilly, our hero, is travelling with a group of family and friends to a Bed and Breakfast to spend the weekend with Bachelor/Bachlorette parties.  Sean’s brother is getting married and he wants to make sure everything for the wedding party goes as planned., before they head to the venue for the wedding.

When they arrive at the Inn, Sean goes to the desk and is shocked to see an old school flame running the Inn.  Lotti Hartford, our heroine, is also shocked to see Sean again.  It’s been 10 years since he walked out on her, after she had told him she loved him.  Needless to say, Lotti isn’t thrilled to see Sean, and totally ignores him.  But fate has its own plans: a terrible storm suddenly arrives, causing road blockage and forcing them to have to stay longer then the weekend, and delaying the wedding at the venue.

Sean is determined to prove himself to Lotti, as he feels he has changed, especially watching his older brother falling in love and getting married.  He has always been known as “the hook-up King”, something he no longer wants.  His feelings for Lottie are rekindled, but now he has to win her over again.  Lotti is not interested in any relationship, as her fiancée just dumped her.

What follows is a second chance romance, and with the extra time, and convincing Lotti to have the wedding at the B&B, their romance will heat up.  They both succumb to their lust for each other, but know that it is only for the couple of days they are there.  Lotti is going on vacation (planned trip for honeymoon that fell through), and she accepts that Sean will leave again.  Holiday Wishes was a short story, but a sweet fun heartwarming romance, that not only had a Christmas theme, but lots of adventure with the storm, makeshift wedding, and a hot sexy couple.  Anything by Jill Shalvis is always going to be good, and even in a novella, it was a perfect taste of what will come in the next novel in Heartbreaker Bay series.

Description:
Meet cute…

Run for the hills—temporarily. That’s Colbie Albright’s plan when she flees New York for San Francisco. Wrangling her crazy family by day and writing a bestselling YA fantasy series by night has taken its toll. In short, Colbie’s so over it that she’s under it. She’s also under the waters of a historic San Francisco fountain within an hour of arrival. Fortunately, the guy who fishes Colbie out has her looking forward to Christmas among strangers. But she’s pretty sure Spencer Baldwin won’t be a stranger for long.

Make merry…

Spence’s commitment to hiding from the Ghosts of Relationships Past means he doesn’t have to worry about the powerful—okay, crazy hot chemistry—he’s got with Colbie. Just because she can laugh at anything, especially herself… just because she’s gorgeous and a great listener just because she gets Spence immediately doesn’t mean he won’t be able to let Colbie go. Does it?

and hope for a miracle.

Now the clock’s ticking for Colbie and Spence: Two weeks to cut loose. Two weeks to fall hard. Two weeks to figure out how to make this Christmas last a lifetime.

Review:

Chasing Christmas Eve by Jill Shalvis is the 4th book in her Heartbreaker Bay series.  As always, any book written by Jill Shalvis is a fun, sexy, sweet and wonderful romance, with a great couple that we always fall in love with.  As noted in my previous reviews, Jill Shalvis is one of the best romance authors.

Colbie Albright is a writer who lives with her family in New York.  She currently has a deadline and is in the middle of writers block.  Colbie also takes care of her mother and two brothers, which does not help her find her muse.  She decides to take a vacation away from it all, hoping the peace and quiet will enable her to write. Colbie planned to go to one of the islands, but with a hurricane cancelling her flight, she decides to go to San Francisco.

Spencer Baldwin is the techie that we have known from the previous books. Spence is also facing his own deadline to finish his project and buries himself into work.   Spence has no time for any relationships, and his last girlfriend left him for that reason.  When he takes a quick break to get some fresh air and walk the dog of a friend, he finds himself rescuing a pretty girl who was accidently pushed into the fountain by the dog.  Spence meet Colbie!

Immediately, Spence is enamored by Colbie, who was not only pretty, but she was different then most girls he knew.  As he helped her out of the water, she was laughing, gabbing away and won him over, as what girl will not care how she looks. The amazing thing about Shalvis is how she always creates two people you immediately fall in love with.  I adored both Spence and Colbie, as they were perfect together.

Spence is not just a techie, he is a genius inventor, and has already made millions, though he looks like a bit of nerd, even if he is a hot hunk.  Colbie also keeps secret that she uses a pseudonym, and is a successful author with a new movie about to be released.

What follows is a sweet fun romance about two people who have their own issues, and both driven by their work. They start a hot romance knowing it will only be for a few weeks, since Colbie will return home on Christmas Eve. I enjoyed seeing all the Heartbreaker Bay friends and previous couples that we met before.  It was so wonderful to watch Spence & Colbie come alive, as they slowly opened their hearts and discovered the happiness that was missing in their lives. Will Spence and Colbie find a way to stay together three thousand miles apart?

Chasing Christmas Eve was a fun romance, and the banter between Spence and Colbie made it even better.  This does read well as a standalone, but I suggest you start with the first book in the Heartbreaker Bay series, in order to meet all the other friends who have had their story told.  If you have not read Jill Shalvis, and love pure romance, then you need to start reading her now.

Chasing Christmas Eve teaser

Excerpt

Spence, still crouched low and easily balanced on the balls of his feet, dropped to his knees and pulled her up to hers. Brushing the hair from her forehead, he eyed the spot where they’d connected. “You okay?”
She started to say yes but his gaze slid to her mouth and she lost her train of thought, instead licking her suddenly dry lips.
Spence, watching the movement avidly, let out a rough breath. “Colbie,” he said quietly, in a very serious, very low octave that sounded like pure sex.
She stood up. “Y-yes?”
Also standing, he slid his hands up her arms, giving her a very slow tug, almost as if expecting resistance.
There was no resistance. Hell, she nearly took a flying leap at him.
He laughed softly, sending a bolt of heat through her. Her knees wobbled and his arm wrapped around her waist, steadying her. Their gazes locked and they both froze in place, she from a sudden rush of emotions, Spence probably from watching them play out across her face. She once again started to say something—still had no idea what—but was silenced by his hot mouth covering hers.
Yes was her only coherent thought and she pressed up against him as he angled his head, taking the kiss even deeper.

Description:
They say life can change in an instant…

After losing her sister in a devastating car accident, chef Quinn Weller is finally getting her life back on track. She appears to have it all: a loving family, a dream job in one of L.A.’s hottest eateries, and a gorgeous boyfriend dying to slip an engagement ring on her finger. So why does she feel so empty, like she’s looking for a missing piece she can’t find?

The answer comes when a lawyer tracks down Quinn and reveals a bombshell secret and a mysterious inheritance that only she can claim. This shocking revelation washes over Quinn like a tidal wave. Her whole life has been a lie.

On impulse, Quinn gives up her job, home, and boyfriend. She heads up the coast to the small hometown of Wildstone, California, which is just a few hours north, but feels worlds apart from Los Angeles. Though she doesn’t quite fit in right away, she can’t help but be drawn to the town’s simple pleasures…and the handsome, dark-haired stranger who offers friendship with no questions asked.

As Quinn settles into Wildstone, she discovers there’s another surprise in store for her. The inheritance isn’t a house or money, but rather something earthshattering, something that will make her question everything she thought she knew about herself, about her family. Now with a world of possibilities opening up to Quinn, she must decide if this new life is the one she was always meant to have—and the one that could finally give her the fulfillment she’s searched so long for.

Review:

Lost and Found Sisters by Jill Shalvis is the first book in her new Wildstone series.    As always with Jill Shalvis, I get a happy face when I know I am starting one of her books, and the glow remains all the way through.  I loved this story, which not only has a sweet romance, but covers life issues revolving around family, loss, healing and discovery.

Quinn Weller, our heroine, has been living her life on automatic, unable to feel much since the loss of her sister Beth two years ago.  Quinn is a sous-chef in a fancy restaurant. Stopping for coffee one day, she is approached by a stranger, who claims that she has inherited something.  Quinn will learn that she is adopted, and the inheritance was from her deceased real mother.  This will take Quinn by shock, and even though she knows her parents love her, she decides to find out more about her true mother and the inheritance, which is in Wildstone, California.

When she arrives in Wildstone, Quinn learns she has inherited part of a house and the local diner.  Quinn also gets to meet her 15 year old half sister, Tilly, who will share the inheritance.  Things do not start off well between them, as Tilly was resentful, difficult and unwilling to accept Qunn. Tilly, at first was a bit unlikeable, but knowing that she lost the most important thing in her life, her mother, it was understandable.

Mick Hennessey, our hero, has recently returned home to Wildstone to help his mother fix up her place, especially since the death of his father.   Mick was a great hero, as he was sweet, fun and definitely very sexy.  He also had the cutest dog, Coop.  Mick happens upon Quinn one day, when she was on the verge of a panic attack, and from there on a friendship built that would eventually become a sizzling romance.  Neither one of them were interested in a relationship, other than friends with benefits, but things will change; such as their feelings, Wildstone and its residents will have an effect on them both.

Quinn begins to help out at the diner, giving her a chance to meet some of the wonderful secondary characters in Wildstone, as well as opening up her heart again to the different type of element in a small town like Wildstone.  Quinn still plans on returning to Los Angeles, her job & her family.  But she has a dilemma.   Tilly is living with the next door neighbor, which is not permanent and Quinn is now the only relative she has.  Will Quinn become Tilly’s Guardian?  Will Tilly allow Quinn into her life?  Will Quinn and Mick find a way to stay together?

Lost and Found Sisters was such a sweet, emotional, fun and sexy story.  I loved Quinn and Mick together, as they made a fabulous couple.  I also enjoyed all the wonderful secondary characters (so many wonderful ones) that Shalvis has created, and look forward to learning more about them in the future books of this series.  As the norm with Jill Shalvis, every book is a fun and happy read, and you can never go wrong reading her books.   Lost and Found was no different, as it was an enjoyable, emotional and romantic story line. I recommend that you read Lost and Found Sisters.

Review:

Accidentally on Purpose by Jill Shalvis is the 3rd book in her Heartbreaker Bay series.  This book reads perfectly as a standalone.  I did not read the first two books, but after meeting some of the characters, I will be going back and read them.  This is a sweet romance story that not only centers on the two main characters, but a wonderful outstanding cast of friends that surround them.   Elle Wheaton, our heroine, has a successful job working for Spence, one of those friends.  Archer Hunt is our hero, who owns his own security firm and privately has always watched over Elle.  Elle has known Arch for many years, since he once saved her life, and lost his police job in the process.  Both of our heroes act like they can’t stand each other, but in reality they each have strong feelings for one another, which they are totally oblivious to.

Archer, who is very bossy, treats Elle like a kid sister, but when she decides to date some of his workers or friends, he begins to change his tune.   Each time she goes out with someone, Archer finds a way to sabotage it.  It was fun to watch them constantly bicker, fight and ignore the sizzling chemistry between them.  I also enjoyed the camaraderie of their friends, who from far know they are meant for each other. However, no one will dare step in and tell them, since both are extremely headstrong and stubborn.

Within this story is a suspenseful situation that revolves around Elle sister, whom she hardly sees.  It will take Archer and the gang to team up to help free her from her nemesis.  This adds to the excitement, but without a doubt the entire story is about Elle and Archer; their antagonistic attitude to each other and watching it slowly begin to crumble.  The sexual tension between them was very well done by Shalvis, which had us rooting hard for them to finally admit how they truly feel.

As noted, I loved all the friends and look forward to reading more about each of them, including going back to read about the first two couples.   My favorite besides Elle and Archer was Spence.  I hope he gets his story soon.   Heartbreaker Bay is a great series to enjoy, and I suggest you start with the first book.  Accidentally on Purpose was a fun, at times exciting, sexy and enjoyable read.  Once again, if you have not read Jill Shalvis, you are missing one of the best romance authors.

excerpt

He whipped around to face her before she could find her sea legs, his expression dark and unreadable.
“What was that?” he demanded.
Planting her feet—or rather, her heels—she went hands on hips. That was the only way to deal with him, just like one would when faced with an animal in the wild. Make herself as big and tall as she could and refuse to back down.
But as for what had come over her, honestly, she had absolutely zero idea. Maybe temper that he could read her like a map. Definitely frustration because he wound her up so tight that she sometimes fantasized about him deep in the night. Or all the time. And the hardest one to admit—embarrassment that she felt this way at all. If he ever found out, he’d be horrified and she’d have to move to Siberia.
“Oh, please,” she scoffed, trying to hide her shame. Her only regret was that she hadn’t bitten him harder. “Don’t even try to tell me I hurt you. You’re impenetrable. A rock.”
“You think I can’t be hurt?” he asked with a whisper of disbelief.
“I think you don’t let it show if you are.” She didn’t realize they were literally toe-to-toe and nose-to-nose until she drew a deep breath and felt her chest brush his.
“What would know you about my feelings, Elle?” he asked very, very quietly, his warm breath brushing her temple.
And just like that, a new kind of tension came over her, something else as well, something that skittered along every single nerve ending in her body.
Bad body.
“Nothing,” she said. “I know nothing of your feelings because you’re an island to me.”
“Yeah? Well, you’re Siberia.”
“What the hell does that mean?” she demanded. “Are you saying I’m cold?”
“Icy cold.”
Which was funny because she was so mad she was hot and she couldn’t think, couldn’t speak, so she crossed her arms tight over herself, closing off, which was of course proving his words. And only because maybe way deep down she did want to know his feelings, wanted to know them more than anything, wanted to know that she mattered to him, that she could reach him, that she could indeed hurt him, she poked him in a hard pec.
He wrapped his fingers around her wrist. “Stop.”
Yeah, that would have been the wise thing to do. Definitely. But she’d never been all that wise when it came to him so she used her free hand to tell him he was number one. With her middle finger. “How’s that for icy, you overgrown, knuckle-dragging oaf—”
Swearing beneath his breath, he caught that wrist too and stepped into her, making her not only shut the hell up but also stumble back a few steps, off balance. A tree came up against her back and Archer used that to his advantage, pinning her there with lots of solid muscle.
Her breath caught. At the sound he froze, his gaze going heavy lidded as he stared at her mouth. Then he planted both hands flat on the huge tree on either side of her, framing her shoulders as he let out a long, careful exhale, resting his cheek against her hair.
“You drive me crazy,” he murmured, his voice reverberating through his chest and into hers.
The words were such a contrast to his actions that it took her mind a moment to catch up. “Yeah, well, right back at you,” she managed, thrown off by the effortless way he was leaning into her, holding her there with his weight, completely immobilizing her. And that wasn’t her biggest problem . . .
It was turning her on.
“Move.”
He started to do just that and she would never in a million years be able to explain what she did next. She fisted her hands in his shirt, lifted her face, and . . .kissed him.
She felt his big body jerk in shock and tightened her grip, making a shockingly needy little whimper and he stilled. In the next beat he banded his arms around her and kissed her back. He kissed her slow and deep, taking his sweet-ass time about it too.
Tendrils of undeniable pleasure coursed through her, melting her bones away. She was still angry. So angry. And yet she couldn’t even remember why. That, coupled with her own sexual frustration and need, God, so much need, she literally went blank. Well, her brain did.
Not her body.
Her body reacted like it’d been deprived of touch for years, which was actually true. She moved against him, writhed really, trying desperately to get even closer, winding her arms around his neck to pull him into a better position to keep kissing him. When their tongues touched, they generated so much heat she nearly went up in flames and she tried to climb his body like he was a jungle gym. This wrenched a groan from deep in his throat.
Sexiest sound ever.

All I Want
Animal Magnetism series
by Jill Shalvis
Release Date: October 6, 2015

All+I+Want

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
Pilot-for-hire Zoe Stone is happy to call Sunshine, Idaho, her home base. But her quiet life is thrown for a loop when her brother’s friend Parker comes to stay with her for a week. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife special agent is a handsome flirt with a gift for getting under her skin. And the situation only escalates when Parker hires her to fly him around the area while he collects evidence on a suspected smuggler.

Now she has to live and work with the guy. But when they’re in the air, she sees another side of him. He’s driven, focused, and sharp. And while he enjoys giving commentary on her blind dates, she quickly realizes with a shock that it’s Parker who gets her engines going…

Review:

All I Want by Jill Shalvis begins with Zoe preparing for a blind date, with the help of her sister, Darcy. As Darcy gives her a hard time over the “unsexy” dress she has chosen to wear, she also gives her some advice: kiss your blind date as soon as you meet him. Zoe, of course, thinks Darcy is nuts. When they hear someone drive up and look out the window, Zoe and Darcy are both struck by the hotness that steps out of his vehicle. Darcy slips out and leaves Zoe to handle herself. When Zoe opens the door, she has a WTH moment and kisses the guy on the lips, only to discover this is NOT her date. Rather, he is Parker, her brother Wyatt’s friend, who has come to town and is crashing at her place. To say she is mortified is a bit of an understatement, but she blows it off……….or at least tries to.

Parker is a little taken aback at Zoe’s “greeting”, but quickly reminds himself he’s here on business, even though his boss has told him to take some time off to recoup from injuries he sustained while on a case. A case where a fellow agent was killed. He and Zoe dance around each other and only offer up so much about themselves and they quickly develop a bit of a routine. However, when Zoe realizes that during one of her flights, when she is flying Parker over a remote area of Idaho, she decides that there is more to Parker than he is admitting. As things progress, they both are adamant that they are not looking for a relationship, but they decide to have a little fun. When Parker’s job places Zoe in danger, he knows what he has to do to keep her safe. Will they both be able to live with the fallout of those decisions? Or, will Parker finally realize that all he wants is right in front of him?

I LOVE JILL SHALVIS AND THIS BOOK! All I Want is a wonderful addition to her Animal Magnetism series. Zoe has always been everyone else’s rock. She practically raised Wyatt and Darcy and never really got to be a kid, so it is awesome to finally get to see her have her own HEA. We find out more about her and why she was so opposed to being in a relationship, and that knowledge will break your heart. Parker’s back story will break your heart a little and when you read the interaction with him and his little sister, your heart will melt and smile all at the same time. The chemistry between Zoe and Parker was off the charts and their interactions will have you laughing out loud. We also get to see most of the previous characters and that’s always a plus. The interaction with everyone in Sunshine, Idaho makes this a place anyone would be lucky to call home. All I Want is ultimately a story about not letting your past jade your hopes for the future, but even more than that, it’s a story about coming to terms with the fact that the most carefully laid plans not coming to fruition can be a very good thing. Well done, Jill Shalvis! Very, very, very well done.

RESCUE ME

Cedar Ridge, Colorado, is famous for crisp mountain air, clear blue skies, and pine-scented breezes. And it’s the last place Lily Danville wants to be. But she needs a job, and there’s an opening at the hottest resort in her hometown. What has her concerned is the other hot property in Cedar Ridge: Aidan Kincaid-firefighter, rescue worker, and heartbreaker. She never could resist that devastating smile . . .

The Kincaid brothers are as rough and rugged as the Rocky Mountains they call home. Aidan has always done things his own way, by his own rules. And never has he regretted anything more than letting Lily walk out of his life ten years ago. If anyone has ever been in need of rescuing, she has. What she needs more than anything are long hikes, slow dances, and sizzling kisses. But that can only happen if he can get her to give Cedar Ridge-and this bad boy-a second chance . .

Review:

Second Chance Summer by Jill Shalvis is the 1st book in her new Cedar Ridge series. Shalvis recently ended her successful Lucky Harbor series, but I am happy to say Second Chance Summer will allow us to smoothly transition to a new town, Cedar Ridge, Colorado, and discover wonderful new characters to fall in love with. Jill Shalvis is one of the best in contemporary romance, and she proves it once again with the start of the Cedar Ridge series.

Lily Danville is our heroine, as she returns to Cedar Ridge after 10 years. A terrible tragedy caused Lily to leave, and now that she desperately needs a job, she returns to accept a job offer from her friend, Jonathan. Lily successful worked in a high profile salon, catering to the rich and famous, until her boss asked her to leak some private information, and when push came to shove, he let Lily take the blame. She then goes home, where she ran away from years before, unable to face her tragic losses.

Aidan Kincaid is our hero, and a fabulous one at that. He is not only a gorgeous sexy hunk,he is also a do gooder. Aidan is always on call to help rescue people as a member of the Colorado Wildland Firefighters, and the Search and Rescue team, which puts him into dangerous situations often. Aidan’s family owns the town resort, which is struggling to make a large payment that will be due within a year. We get to meet his brothers, sister, sister in law, mother, which gives us a look into the future of this series.

Aidan has never gotten over Lily, and has given up trying to find her. To his surprise, he finds out accidently that Lily is returning home, and within a short time, he sees her arriving. As will happen a few times, Aidan ends up being in the right place at the right time to help Lily out of a precarious spot, and the two of them realize they still have strong feelings for each other.

Aidan makes it known; he wants Lily back, though he doesn’t understand why she left without talking to him. Lily has memories of those tragic events that she can’t get past. Her twin sister, who was always in friendly competition with her, accidently slipped on the mountains to her death. At the funeral, her father had a heart attack and died. Blaming herself, she ran away to escape the memories, and now that those same mountains are so close, she tries to come to terms with her guilt. It is Aidan and others, who will try to convince that it wasn’t her fault, as her sister loved the competition and it was an accident.

Aidan and Lily slowly rekindle their romance, which is hot and steamy. We watch Lily struggle with her feelings for Aidan becoming stronger, but her fears escalate with his firefighting/search rescue situations, that he will break her heart again. Will Lily be able to get past the guilt she feels? Can she accept her love for Aidan despite the danger Aidan always seems to be in?

Second Chance Summer is a sweet, romantic and wonderful story, that is a little heartbreaking, as we feel Lily’s pain. I loved Aidan and Lily together, and Shalvis has once again created a fabulous group of secondary characters that were totally delightful. I cannot wait for the next book. Jill Shalvis has another winner with the Cedar Ridge series. Do not miss reading Second Chance Summer, which promises to be a wonderful series.

Still the One
Animal Magnetism series – Book #6
by Jill Shalvis
Release Date: April 7, 2014

Still the oneAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM / iBooks

Description:
Darcy Stone is game for anything — except sexy Navy veteran and physical therapist A.J. Colten, the guy who’d rejected her when she’d needed him most. Now the shoe is on the other foot and he needs her to play nice and help him secure grants for his patients. Unfortunately, Darcy can’t refuse. She needs the money to fund her passion project: rescuing S&R dogs and placing them with emotionally wounded soldiers.

A.J. admits it — Darcy is irresistible. But he’s already been battle-scarred by a strong-willed, vivacious, adventurous woman like Darcy, and he’s not making the same mistake twice—until he and Darcy are forced to fake a relationship. Growing closer than they’d ever imagined possible, Darcy and AJ have to ask themselves: how much between them is pretend? What’s the real thing? And where does it go from here?

Review:

Darcy Stone has always been a bit of a free spirit. She and her siblings were raised by a set of globetrotting diplomat parents who didn’t have much time for their children and that affected Darcy in ways that she’s still trying to come to terms with. After a horrible accident that left her gravely injured, she only had her brother and sister to fall back on, and she didn’t make it easy on any of them. Including herself.

Still the One begins with Darcy trying to raise money to rescue yet another S&R dog. Since her accident, she’s no longer able to travel the world for National Geographic, so she has a couple of part time jobs that don’t pay quite enough for her to rescue and place the dogs. One of her part time jobs is at A.J.’s physical therapy clinic, and he knows that she’s struggling with the way that her life is playing out. He’s the one who put her through the wringer in therapy in order for her to be able to walk again and he needs someone just like her, a physical therapy success story, to travel with him to meet a philanthropist who is interested in funding the pro-bono work that A.J. does. The problem? Darcy and A.J. tend to not get along too well, and she definitely has a problem holding her tongue. But, when A.J. tells Darcy that he needs her help, and sweetens the pot with the promise to pay her for her time in order for her to rescue more dogs, she accepts. After all, she needs the money. And the fact that she’s been mooning over A.J. has nothing to do with her decision. At all……… And, what do ya know? Seems A.J. has been pining away over Darcy as well.

Once they leave for their trip, neither is sure this was such a good idea. They meet with the philanthropist and his wife, and things go very well……very, very well…..up to a point. And, once they get back home, things really get rolling between the two of them, until a partial conversation is overheard and changes everything……………

I love this series. The back and forth between the main characters, as well as the secondary characters, is wonderfully written. I’ve been waiting on Darcy’s story, and I knew it would not disappoint. She had always been so independent, and then the accident forced her to depend on others. She has a huge heart, but had a very hard time giving it over to anyone. A.J. was perfect for her. He’s hot as hell, but also has a huge heart and moves heaven and earth to try and make a difference in people’s lives. Still the One is ultimately a story about letting down one’s defenses in order to see that letting those that love and care for you just might, in fact, be a good thing. Well done, Jill Shalvis! Very well done!

excerpt

“AJ held the door open for Darcy, doing his best to keep his tongue in his mouth, but he wasn’t sure he quite managed.
“Thanks,” she said, brushing up against his arm and shoulder as she stepped into the elevator.
His free hand came out to stabilize her, a purely instinctual move. He didn’t give a thought to the fact that she hated to be helped because he couldn’t give a thought to anything.
Holy. Shit. Hotness.
Her little black dress—emphasis on little—just about killed him.. The bodice was short, snug, and, at first glance, modest.
Second glance, not so much.
She bent over and fiddled with her heels, which had a strap around her ankle and screamed SEX. So did the way the hem of her dress rose up on her thighs, high enough that his eyes nearly popped right out of his head. “What are you doing?” he managed.
“Nothing.” Still bent at the waist, she shifted to her other heel, during which time he pressed his fingers into his eye sockets to keep his eyes in his head.
She was all leg and silken skin and crazy gorgeous hair, and he attempted to steel himself against her but he failed. He’d been wrong, oh so very wrong when he said he’d be able to handle her. He couldn’t, not in her yoga pants, not in a sexy little black dress, not at work, not in his truck, not in an elevator, not in anything anywhere—he couldn’t do it, Sam I Am.
She straightened and sent him a searching look. She’d piled all that long curly hair on top of her head but several silky strands had escaped, brushing her temples and shoulders, giving her a just-got-laid look. Her lips were siren red and he knew it made him a pig, but all he could think about was her mouth and how her lips would looked stretched around his—
“We’re on time still, right?” she asked.
He had to clear his throat to answer. “Yeah.” Jesus.
The door slid shut and silence filled the elevator while they stared at each other. To keep his hands to himself, he backed to the wall.
“So,” she said, looking like she was mentally cracking her knuckles. “What are the rules here? Kiss ass? Sit, shake, and roll over on command? Tell everyone how you saved my life? Obey your every order?”
Her sarcasm helped him roll his tongue back into his mouth. “I will ask you to kiss someone’s ass never,” he said. “Same for sit and shake and roll over. And you know damn well I didn’t save your life. But as for the obeying me? That. Lots of that would be great.”
