ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 3, 2015

Foreign war correspondent Tanner Thomas is addicted to living on the edge. Needing the adrenaline rush of his job to help him cope with a personal loss, he throws himself back into the game, concentrating all his energy on getting the next big story.

But when he meets his new photojournalist, Beaux Croslyn, he can’t help but feel like he’s losing his focus—and maybe risking more…

With secrets she won’t address, Beaux is far from your ordinary woman. Determined to keep her distance, she’s willing to pull Tanner in closer and hide behind the sparks flying between them. But as Beaux’s past begins to put their relationship—and their lives—at risk, Tanner’s determination to find the truth puts them both in jeopardy.

He’s ready to chase her to the ends of the earth to find out if what they had was real, or if the danger surrounding them was just an exquisite heat fated to burn out.

•••••••••••

REVIEW: HARD BEAT is the seventh installment in K.Bromberg’s contemporary, adult Driven erotic, romance series. This is war correspondent Tanner Thomas, and photojournalist Beaux BJ Croslyn’s storyline. HARD BEAT can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Tanner Thomas is Rylee Thomas-Donavan’s brother-the heroine in K.Bromberg’s original Driven Trilogy.

Told from first person point of view (Tanner Thomas) HARD BEAT follows Tanner as he returns to the Middle East following the death of his previous partner (and photographer) and best friend Stella. Stella was killed while on assignment with Tanner, and Tanner is having a difficult time accepting what was and what has to be. Enter Beaux Croslyn-Tanner’s new photographer and partner-and a woman with too many secrets that she is not willing to share. We learn very little about our leading heroine, and her secrets are the catalyst that sets into motion Tanner’s downward spiral.

The relationship between Tanner and Beaux begins acrimoniously-Tanner wants nothing to do with his new photographer- a woman who represents everything he lost-but a woman whose secrets, and late night solo excursions find our hero fearing for the death of another woman with whom he has fallen in love. The banter is angry, aggressive and confrontational, and sets the tone for much of their combative relationship. The $ex scenes are seductive and provocative. I will add that I applaud K. Bromberg’s shift away from the sexually graphic and over-the-top language between our leading couple as found in her earlier storylines. There comes a time when certain words don’t belong in a romance storyline.

The secondary characters include Rylee and Colton Donavan-although most of the interaction is through phone conversations but we do get some one on one time between the characters. We are also introduced to Tanner’s boss Rafe, and a few of his fellow war correspondents and news reporters in the Middle East.

There are several twists and turns throughout the storyline especially near the end when everything goes to h*ll for our storyline hero. The world building focuses on the element of danger, suspense, destruction and potential threats to everyone’s lives-it is a storyline set in the war-torn Middle East where life is as fragile as a piece of glass.

HARD BEAT has moments of heartbreak and tears; emotional breakdowns and tragic loss. The premise is a roller coaster of unanswered questions and hidden agendas; the characters are charismatic and real; but in the end, there is a happily ever after for two people whose paths ventured off in different directions.

excerpt

She pulls me from my lewd but damn fine thoughts when she tries to jerk her arm from my hold. My spine stiffens some because hell if I’m up for resistance right now. I’m emotionally drained, exhausted, and as much as I don’t want to feel that grenade of desire sitting low in my belly, I still want to pull its pin so I can lose myself for a bit in the soft curves and sweet taste of a gorgeous woman no matter how fucking insolent she is.
I clench my jaw. A fleeting show of resistance before I give in to my need and the sexual tension. She gasps when I release her arm only to bring it up to her neck at the same time I crash my lips to hers.
And fuck yes I’m a dick for not letting her push me away, for letting my own need for this woman who will most likely move on by the week’s end control my actions, for taking without asking, but goddamn her small display of independence turns me on something fierce.
I brand my mouth to hers, press my tongue between her lips as she parts them. Her hands push me away, but the movement of her tongue tells me she wants more. She’s a clear contradiction in all meanings of the word. Soft and supple body, but I can feel the toned muscle beneath. Between kisses she tries to pull back, but a soft moan in the back of her throat when my free hand cups her ass tells me how much she wants this.
Her hands fist in my shirt at the same time my hand takes hold of the loose bun at the nape of her neck to tilt her head back and look into her eyes. But her mouth stays right where I want it because I’m nowhere near done with her yet.
“I don’t like you,” she claims through gritted teeth. Our hands run possessively over each other, but derision laced with defiance glimmers in her eyes.
“I beg to differ.” I laugh at the ludicrousness of her statement, considering the predicament we’re in. She tries to step back, but when she doesn’t release my shirt, I know she still wants more.
And fuck, I’m definitely all in. I need this outlet more than I ever realized until I was in the thick of it. I’ve kept to myself at home, fought with my sister when she attempted to fix me up with one of her friends, punished myself, and now with the heat of a woman’s body pressed up against me and the taste of her kiss seared in my goddamn brain, there is no way in hell I’m walking away now.
“I don’t like you,” she reiterates.
“Too bad,” I tell her as I go in for the next kiss. One that’s full of angry desperation and irresistible need with teeth nipping and tongues meeting and that ache deep in my balls taking hold of me. My hips pin her against the cold cinder-block wall behind her.
Her fingers dig into my shoulders as she tears her mouth from mine, our chests heaving. And then just when her protests stop and her tongue starts to dance with mine again, I pull back.
“You’re arrogant and—”
“You don’t have to like me to fuck me,” I say, cutting her off. “You just have to want me.”
She protests, and I cut her words off with my mouth on hers at the same time my hands grab her wrists. Even as I gain the advantage, I feel like she’s pulling out the ground from beneath my feet. “Fuck you!” She manages to get the words out between fervent kisses.
I chuckle against her lips before pulling back and looking straight into her desire-laden eyes. “That’s the plan.”

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 2, 2015

Hawkin Play, the bad boy rock star with a good guy heart, has lived a lifetime of cleaning up after his twin brother’s mistakes. Hunter’s most recent screw-up could land Hawke in jail and risk the band’s future. Hawke agrees to guest lecture at a local college to stay in the judge’s good graces—and a bet with his bandmate to seduce his sexy teaching assistant is icing on the cake.

Quinlan Westin is harder to bed than Hawke imagined. She knows his type and is determined to avoid the rocker at all costs—even if their attraction runs deeper than simple lust.

Just as Hawke might finally be winning over the girl, his brother has other plans. When Hunter realizes his twin finally has a weakness, he’ll stop at nothing to take advantage…

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: SWEET ACHE is the sixth installment in K. Bromberg’s adult, contemporary Driven erotic, romance series. This is Hawkin Play (lead singer for the rock band Bent) and Quinlan Westin’s storyline. We were first introduced to Quinlan throughout Colton and Rylee’s storylines-Quinlan is Colton’s sister. SWEET ACHE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Hawkin and Quinlan) SWEET ACHE focuses on the building relationship between our leading couple, and Hawkin’s rapport and association with the band, and his immediate family. Hawkin’s life appears to be spiraling out of control but behind the scenes, Hawke continues to take the fall for his twin brother’s mistakes. Serving a twelve week sentence, on his brother’s behalf, Hawkin finds himself the guest lecturer at the local college where he meets the beautiful and not easily played Quinlan Westin. What ensues is Hawkin’s seduction of Quin reinforced by a bet with his fellow band mate.

The relationship between Quin and Hawke is acrimonious at the start. Quinlan is all too aware of the celebrity lifestyle having lived through her brother’s years as the number one Indy driver in the world, and Hawkin Play pushes all of Quin’s buttons within the first few minutes of introduction. As a rock star and celebrity, Hawkin is used to getting what he wants-and he wants Quinlan before the end of his ‘term served.’ As Hawke pursues Quin, the band sits on the sidelines watching the train wreck unfold. The $ex scenes are erotic, provocative, and graphic. Hawke likes to talk dirty in the bedroom.

Hawkin’s family history is dark and disturbing. Colton’s past was rife with abuse and neglect; Hawkin’s past sees a mother’s desperate attempts to hide the truth and a father’s failure. Our hero shoulders the blame for so many family issues, that counseling should be a mandated part of his everyday life.

The secondary characters include Indy drive Luke Mason, whose attraction to Quin is all encompassing but Quin plays Luke for a fool and uses the race car driver to forget her attraction to Hawkin Play. Quin’s best friend Layla is quick to give our heroine a push in the right direction; Colton and Rylee have cameo appearances (some via phone or text) throughout the story. We are also introduced to the band BENT-Vince, Gizmo, and Rocket, as well as their lawyer and best friend Benji. Hawke’s brother Hunter is the requisite evil as drug addiction spiked with jealousy throw our hero off his game and head long into more self-deprecation, grief and guilt.

SWEET ACHE is an emotional and intense storyline. We get up close and personal with our hero as he struggles to come to terms with his ailing mother, and drug addicted brother-both of whom destroy a little of our hero’s soul with every encounter. Quinlan is a strong heroine whose prior relationships have been less than successful, but it is her need to ‘save’ Hawke that is at the heart of the story.

K. Bromberg will captivate your imagination; her passion for emotional and broken heroes is intoxicating and inspiring. The destructive nature of childhood trauma, drug addiction and mental illness is dramatic in its’ presentation; striking in its’ reality; alarming in its’ reach. The characters are colorful, charismatic and real; the premise impassioned; the romance erotic and fierce. The volatile need for acceptance and forgiveness pushes the envelope of love and a happily ever after.

Sweet Ache Teaser-1

excerpt

Well, shit. Guess there’s not going to be any calm before the next storm. I look at my brother and sigh.
I hit the road, drive for what feels like hours. I don’t know where I’m going or what I’m looking to find, but as long as I keep moving, my past can’t catch up to me.
At least it’s a good idea in theory because I can’t outrun this shit. The stuff I want to and the stuff I don’t want to.
I end up the one place I used to go to be alone, to think, and as I stare at the Hollywood sign from my seat on the grass at the Griffith Park Observatory, I love the feeling that I’m this little person in this big world. The idea comforts me some. The notion that on the grand scale of things my problems are minute. Someone out there has it way worse.
And no one expects a rock star to be here so with my hat pulled low on my head, I’m able to disappear.
I stare down below to the city where as a little boy, scared and traumatized, I wondered how all of the dreams inside my head could ever see the light of day when I felt like I had the responsibility of the world on my small shoulders. But I did. And I made it.
So why do I feel like I’m still not enough? For my brother? To make my mother better? For Quinlan to even want me beyond the killer sex we have? For the fans who scream and sing my lyrics like they live them when they have no fucking clue the meaning behind the words?
I scrub my hands over my face, needing a drink, craving an ice cream cone, and wanting the feeling of Quinlan’s arms wrapped around me as she silently sits there and just is with me.
My mind veers to Hunter. I push the guilt away, hold on to my gut check rationalization that he deserved it, and realize that’s the trouble I’m having here. Going with my gut versus going with the bullshit promises I’ve lived by forever.
My stomach churns and my head feels like Gizmo’s banging the hell out of it with his sticks. I shove up off the grass, needing to get the fuck out of here, my heart and head in conflict and for the first time in forever I dare to think what could happen if my heart finally won for once.

Or will fate force her to realize that this kind of connection doesn’t come along very often and a chance at love is worth the risk?

••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SLOW BURN is the fifth installment in K.Bromberg’s adult, contemporary DRIVEN erotic romance series. This is Colton Donavan’s best friend Beckett Daniels and Rylee Thomas-Donovan’s BFF Haddie Montgomery’s storyline.

Told from alternating first person points of view (Haddie and Beckett) the storyline focuses on the building relationship between Haddie and Beckett, and Haddie’s need to push away the people that she loves. Haddie and Beckett were first introduced to the reader and to one another in K.Bromberg’s DRIVEN series about billionaire race car driver Colton Donavan and the love of his life Rylee Thomas.

Haddie continues to struggle with the death of her sister, and in this the entire storyline takes off in a different direction. Grief, fear of the unknown, and an uneasy feeling about the future find Haddie battling her feelings for Beckett- the man to whom she made no promises for the future-no strings attached. The ‘no strings’ attached scenario comes up time and again throughout the story-she may have said no strings but Beckett sees a chain around his heart, directly connected to the woman that he loves.

There is plenty of push and pull in this emotional storyline where Haddie’s decisions come across as selfish and uncaring at times but she struggles with the aftermath of her sister’s death, the upheaval upon everyone’s lives, and an unknown future for herself. Sometimes we all have to take a step back and look at the bigger picture; looking into the mirror does not reveal the entire story. Haddie wants to set out on her journey alone hoping to protect everyone that she loves-in the end, going it alone, is the worse possible decision she could make.

K. Bromberg invites the reader into Haddie’s personal and emotional journey. There are moments of fear and sorrow; grief and letting go; romance and love. SLOW BURN looks at a different kind of romantic storyline struggle; a struggle many families face on a daily basis but one that is more personal than most.

To be honest, this is a difficult review to write. I have to avoid spoilers and by avoiding the focus of the storyline, I have to omit the biggest plot point of the novel. There is no getting around it; I have to be vague or vaguer than normal 😉 But, I do know that by the time all of the reviews have been posted to the various sites, the secrets will have been revealed.

He chuckles low and even, a sarcastic amusement woven through the sound that pisses me off. “What are you afraid of? Why is his offer so much more tempting than mine, huh? Oh, I know why,” he says, sarcasm dripping from his words. “He’ll walk away without any questions. But I won’t will I, Haddie? I have plenty of questions. The first one being what exactly are you running from?”
My eyes flash up to meet his, and the look – the moment that passes between us – is too honest, too raw. I have to break it. I can’t let him see the truths that even I’m trying to hide from. How I feel and what I need to fix me – the answer being him – because I’m not going to allow it to happen.
I can feel it. I can know it. But he can’t.
My mind flashes back momentarily to the night of the wedding. Of how I asked him – gave him no other option really –to take me to bed. Did I know then that unzipping my dress for him and inviting him between my legs would lead to this? Me wanting so much more? Me standing in the middle of his apartment wanting to ask for more but unable to because of the fears that are holding me hostage?

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 15, 2014

The Colton Points of View Collection

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author K. Bromberg comes a companion novella to the Driven Trilogy (Driven, Fueled, and Crashed). This novella is a compilation of reader requested scenes from the series retold through the eyes of Colton Donavan.

Colton Donavan lived life in the fast lane, but it took Rylee Thomas to teach him what racing was all about.

Arrogant, Rogue, Broken, Conceited, Dirty-Talking, Rebel, Egomaniacal, Voodooed, Bent, Reckless

You think you know me?

Think again.

*Raced is not a complete re-write of the Driven Trilogy. This companion explores pivotal scenes as well as some new ones written in Colton Donavan’s point of view that were not previously published in Driven, Fueled, and Crashed. Hear his thoughts, experience his inner-turmoil, and laugh with him on his journey as he overcomes his demons and accepts what it means to love.

This novella is for the devoted readers of the Driven series. It is recommended that this companion be read after Driven, Fueled, and Crashed.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: RACED is the companion novella to K. Bromberg’s wildly successful Driven Trilogy focusing on billionaire race-car driver Colton Donavan and the love of his life Rylee Thomas. The book is written from Colton’s POV and covers some of the timeline throughout the Driven Trilogy.

K. Bromberg takes the reader into the mind of Colton Donavan. We are privy to his private thoughts, his anxiety, his needs and his desires. Colton’s past has formed the man that he is today and we are up close and personal with the demons that have all but destroyed his mind. Colton is a man possessed, who believes he is not worthy of love or affection, and a man who is on a path of destruction from where there may be no return.

K. Bromberg introduces each new chapter with a bit of history and explanation as to why she chose that particular scenario. Some reasoning includes a better understanding of Colton’s mindset at the time or the introduction of a completely new scene that was never written because the original trilogy is told from Rylee’s POV. From emotional rants to pages of self-debasing, Colton is a man who wants and needs Rylee like the air that he breathes but he believes he will destroy her faith and her love. He continually pushes away the woman that he loves because he is too frightened to admit that his need for Rylee may be stronger than her love for him.

The storyline is heavy with graphic language and profanity-almost stereotypical and clichéd of the male species. As the author has explained, DRIVEN is not a complete re-write from Colton’s POV but addresses specific plot points and events throughout the trilogy. Colton’s one –on-one time with his best friend Beck reveals a bromance, of sorts, with the man who will soon get a story of his own.

If you are a fan of K. Bromberg’s DRIVEN Trilogy then RACED is a revealing addition to the series. RACED is not a stand alone storyline-the DRIVEN series must be read in order to understand the significance of the outtakes and Colton’s POV throughout the novella. The DRIVEN series is about a tragic hero; a man whose public persona hides a past mired in abuse, devastation and such low self esteem that even his heroes have a difficult time finding their way to save a little boy when he needs them the most.

Rylee fell out of that damn storage closet and into my life. Now I don’t think I’ll ever be the same. She’s seen glimpses of the darkness within me, and yet she’s still here. Still fighting for me. She is without a doubt the saint, and I am most definitely the sinner.

How is it the one thing neither of us wanted—neither of us anticipated that fateful night—has us fighting so hard to keep?

Life is full of moments.

Big moments.

Little moments.

And none of them are inconsequential.

Every single moment prepares you for that one instance that defines your life. You must overcome all your fears, confront the demons that chase you, and cleanse the poison that clings to your soul or you risk the chance of losing everything.

Mine started the minute Rylee fell out of that damn storage closet. She made me feel. Made me whole when all I thought I could ever be was incomplete. Became the lifeline I never knew I needed. Hell yes, she’s worth the fight…but how do you fight for someone you know you don’t deserve?

Love is full of ups and downs.

Heart stopping highs.

Soul shattering lows.

And none of them are insignificant.

Love is a racecourse of unexpected twists and turns that must be negotiated. You have to break down walls, learn to trust, and heal from your past in order to win. But sometimes it’s the expected that’s the hardest to hold on to.

Colton has healed and completed me, stolen my heart, and made me realize our love’s not predictable nor perfect—it’s bent. And bent’s okay. But when outside factors put our relationship to the test, what lengths will I have to go to prove to him that he’s worth the fight?

Whoever said love is patient and love is kind, never met the two of us. We know our love is worth it—have acknowledged that we were meant to be—but when our pasts crash into our future, will the repercussions make us stronger or break us apart?

I raise my head and look into her eyes. Last chance, Ryles. Escape while you can. But she stands her ground, unwavering, accepting of the warning in my eyes and the dominance in my stance.
“Come.” God help me because when all is said and done, I think I’m going to need it to walk away from her. She bites her bottom lip to stop it from quivering. Even she knows I’m inviting her into the lion’s den.
I give her a soft smile, pretending I can’t see the vulnerability in her eyes, ignoring it as I draw her further in … and that makes me even worse of a man than I already thought.
We walk, desire leading us and desperation owning our thoughts. I think I mumble an explanation that I have a room, but I’m not sure because my thoughts are consumed by every single thing about her. Fucking consumed when I’ve never been this way before.
I usher her into the elevator, unlock the penthouse all the while my dick is begging me to push the red button, halt the elevator right here, right now and take her on the floor. Feed the greed and be done with her.
Return to familiar ground and be the asshole I know that I am.

When life crashes down around us, how hard are we willing to fight for the one thing we can’t live without, each other?

CRASHED is the third and final instalment in K. Bromberg’s contemporary, romance, erotic Driven Trilogy focusing on Colton Donavan and Rylee Thomas. Colton is the billionaire race car driver whose earlier years are the stuff of nightmares and Rylee is Colton’s superhero who rescues her man from the pits of hell.

The focus of CRASHED is on Colton’s recovery –both mentally, emotionally and physically-following the crash that nearly ended his life. The reader is pulled into an emotional roller coaster ride of one man’s need to prove he is not worthy of love and acceptance and, of one woman’s determination to ensure that Colton knows that he is not the child of his early years but the sum of a lifetime of experiences and pain. Colton sabotages everything good in his life proving that no one can be trusted with his heart and his soul.

CRASHED (and the Driven series) is a story of overcoming adversity and abuse. Colton Donavan is a man broken by the secrets of his past-the secrets that had imprisoned his heart and his mind into a world of betrayal, abuse and nightmares. Colton is a man who has been beaten down by everything that life throws at him and in this he is reluctant to accept love-from family, from friends and from the woman who has stolen his heart. Crashed is a story of recovery; overcoming adversity and moving forward but not before life and everything it has to offer pushes Colton closer to the edge of the abyss that is waiting to suck him under.

K.Bromberg has written an emotionally intensive storyline (and series) that is astonishing in its’ brilliance, its’ presentation and its’ provocative story. Bromberg seduces the reader into a dramatic and sensual storyline where the pain of abuse follows a broken hero from one life to the next; and where the love of one woman who refused to give up is the only hero Colton Donavan would ever need.

Excerpt #1-Crashed by K. Bromberg

And the only thing I can focus on—can grasp onto as my heart races and body shakes with anger—is that I need a pit stop. I need to find Colton. I need to touch him, to see him, to quiet the turmoil in my soul.

But I can’t.

He’s somewhere close, my rebellious rogue unable to let go of the damaged little boy within. The man who has just started healing is now broken, and it kills me that I won’t be able to fix him. That my murmured words of encouragement and patient nature won’t be able to repair the immobile and unresponsive body that was loaded onto that stretcher and rushed to somewhere within these walls—so close yet so very far away from me. That he has to rely on strangers to mend and heal him now. Strangers that have no idea of the invisible scar tissue that still lingers beneath the surface.

More hands reach out to touch and soothe me, Dorothea’s and Quinlan’s, but they’re not the ones I want. They’re not Colton’s.

And then a terrifying thought hits me. Every time Colton is near, I can feel that tingle—the buzz that tells me he’s just within reach—but I can’t feel anything. I know he’s physically close, but his spark is nonexistent.

 Interview

TRC: Hi Kristy and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the success of the Driven series.

K BrombergKristy: Thank you so much for having me! It’s all still a bit surreal that people are reading about the voices talking to me in my head—and liking them no less!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow: Website/Facebook/Twitter /Goodreads

Kristy: I am a working mother that lives in Southern California with my husband and three young children. I spend my days wrangling children, driving them to and from practice and school all the while doing my “real” job before tucking them in and spending time on my “dream” job of being an author.

DrivenTRC: DRIVEN is your May 2013 release and first book in the Driven Trilogy. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Order:  Amazon.com / Amazon.ca /

Click HERE for our review of DRIVEN (Driven #1) by K. Bromberg

Kristy: Driven is a book that revolves around the irrefutable attraction between two people who appear to be opposites but have more in common than one might think. They find each other at a time in their lives when they need each other the most despite either of them thinking that. The story follows their battle of wills, the challenge and chase, along with seven little boys that will steal your heart.

TRC: Are any of the characters or situations in the storyline based in reality or an amalgamation of your imagination and current headlines?

Kristy: None of the characters are based from reality. They all reside strictly in my imagination.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in the series, which models or actors would be represent your projected image?

Kristy: That’s a hard question because I don’t think I’d ever find that image I have in my head of Colton or Rylee in real person. Yes—someone can have dark hair and green eyes…but it’s not Colton. And besides, even if I did know someone, I prefer not to say because I don’t want to ruin one of my readers’ images in their heads—does that make sense? For instance, everyone disagrees who should play Christian Grey—and in all honesty, I don’t think they’ll ever cast the correct person because in my head he is an image only I have conjured up.

Fueled CoverTRC: FUELED is your second installment and August 2013 release in the Driven Trilogy. Please tell us something about the premise?

Order: Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/

Click HERE for our review of FUELED.

Kristy: Fueled is the journey of Rylee and Colton. As the story unfolds we see a myriad of things: forgiveness, understanding one another, the building blocks and sometimes knocking down of the foundation of a relationship. Their growing love (well, what Rylee would define as love) is tough. It’s not always easy or pretty—especially when you have baggage that you bring to the table like they do—but Fueled is their story and aabout figuring their place together in the midst of all of it. Oh, and you also get to see things through Colton’s eyes for several chapters.

I’ll finish by saying that Fueled is a roller coast of extreme emotions. If you thought Driven made you feel, Fueled will make it seem like the kiddie ride.

TRC: Many of the recently popular adult series, once labeled as trilogies, are now going beyond into 4, 5 and 6 books. If the DRIVEN series continues to be a success, will you continue the storylines e.g. novellas or full length novels, or have you an ending in mind for the series?

Kristy: When you read the last page of Crashed, Rylee and Colton’s story will be told in completion. I promised that from the beginning and will stick by that. I will say that I’ve pondered writing a short novella that goes back and covers a few events between the last chapter and the epilogue…but we’ll see how I feel when I finish writing Crashed. I’ve been questioned if I plan on writing any spin-off books of other characters such as Haddie or Becks…there are possibilities there but I’m focusing strictly on Crashed right now and giving Rylee and Colton the respect they deserve by writing a story that will knock your socks off.

TRC: FUELED is a storyline that is heartbreaking, frustrating, painful and a roller coaster of emotions. The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

Kristy: Wow! Tough question. In my case, I just write how I think I would feel in a situation, luckily it works (or at least that’s what I’m told by readers). I think part of drawing people in, and it’s just how I do it, is I throw grammar out the window (it drives people crazy—especially my editor). Thoughts and emotions that run through your head are not always complete. Sometimes they are repeated or incomplete. That’s how I write. When Rylee is angry I write it short, sharp sentences clumped together. When she’s content, it’s more fluid with longer sentences that are more flowery. That’s just me though—I’m super wordy and I have a habit of saying the same thing in different ways in a short span so the editing process is longer for me. So in short, I think an author needs to write how someone really thinks/talks/feels when they are in the emotion they are trying to portray.

I think author’s fall short when they don’t invest time in building their characters. When a reader is invested in the character, it’s easier for them to relate and feel the character’s plight.

TRC: Will you tell us how YOU were able to handle the more disturbing and heartbreaking aspects of this particular storyline? Did you get emotionally involved with the events of this novel?

Kristy: Of course I am emotionally involved in the storyline since these people are my creation and I most definitely care about them. I think as an author you look at things a little differently—of course the emotion is engaging—but my focus is how to make you feel that emotion…how to draw you, the reader, in. What actions or descriptions are going to make you react and feel. It’s one of those things that when you are in the middle of a situation you aren’t as affected as someone on the outside, looking in.

The funny thing is that I’ve read the story during the editing process so many times that I’m kind of numb to the emotion in it now…and I forgot how powerful some of the scenes were until I started hearing from the bloggers who were reading their ARCs. Their reactions were pretty eye-opening to the honest and raw emotion in the book.

TRC: Rylee and Colton’s ‘catharsis’ scenes are fraught with tears, anxiety and misunderstanding. What do you believe will have to happen before our
couple is able to move forward?

Kristy: I think in order for Colton and Rylee to move forward, all of the cards need to be thrown on the table. In Fueled, the reader sees a lot of the cards or can make intelligent inferences from things, but that doesn’t mean the other character does. For instance, Fueled has some chapters that take place from Colton’s POV. We see his thoughts and know things about him that Rylee can guess at but doesn’t whole-heartedly know. So I think that everything needs to be laid out bare – souls, hearts, fears, pasts—and that will allow them the fortitude and trust to move forward.

TRC: CRASHED is the third installment. Have you started writing and if so, can you hint at the storyline or is it best to remain secretive at this point? 😉

Kristy: Crashed is heavily outlined but not written yet. I released Driven and Fueled three months apart…luckily Fueled was basically written when I published Driven or I would have never finished it in that short amount of time. Editing takes forever and I never took into account the time consumption of marketing the books…so when I finish up the promo stuff for Fueled, I’m diving head first into Crashed…I’m antsy to get writing again! With that said, I’ve spent a lot of time with the computer glued to my fingertips as of late, and I’m going to take a little time to play with my kids a little more because I’m starting to have that mother’s guilt creep in that I’m not doing enough with them…if that makes sense.

TRC: Do you have a projected date of release for CRASHED?

Kristy: In my head, yes—but I am not saying yet. I’d rather give a date I know that I can hit rather than give one now and keep moving it because that’s frustrating to readers. I’m being realistic that the holidays are coming up soon and family comes first so I need to make sure they are taken care of…but rest assured, Crashed is getting written. I don’t want to rush something out that is less than par just to finish the book in a set time frame.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Driven series

Kristy: I like to think that I direct the characters but I think a bit of both happens. There are plenty of times that I have a scene set a certain way and all of the sudden the character does or says something in my head that’s completely off course. It’s those times that I start typing furiously to catch up to my thoughts because the character screams at me to do something else—and usually, those end up being the best parts of the book.

TRC: Are you a plotter or a pantster?

Kristy: I’m definitely a plotter—You have to be when writing a trilogy because you have to weave ribbons in Book 1 that will take hold and come to light in Book 3. I think my outline for Crashed is something like 78 pages written in longhand. But here’s the thing, no matter how detailed an outline, when I write, sometimes the best things in the book happen on the fly as I mentioned before…all of the sudden they hit and then I go backwards to make it work.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, car racing lingo) did you encounter writing this particular story/series?

Kristy: I had to research some terms. There is a scene in Fueled where Colton is testing his race car and he’s throwing out jargon—I definitely had to research the terms but it wasn’t anything too detailed. I did have to research how the boys would react in certain situations in order to stay true to the trauma/experiences in their lives. Luckily I’ve had some readers who do this for a living and they’ve contacted me and helped out with terms or reactions to circumstances.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Kristy: No one. I know. It sounds odd but I don’t really have anyone here that I bounce anything off of. At home I have three small children and a husband. To them, this world doesn’t really exist other than me sitting with the computer glued to my fingertips. I’ll mumble something to my Mom every now and again but other than that, most people don’t even realize that I write. For instance when I published Driven, only three people even knew I wrote it before I hit publish if that tells you anything.

I will say that this time around I had beta readers—some bloggers and some other people that I met online through groups that had experience beta reading for other authors. That was a big help because I received some feedback on what worked or didn’t work for them while reading it…so in theory, I bounced some ideas off of them. I ended up making some revisions off of their comments, but other than that, no one really.

TRC: How do you keep the plot unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Kristy: That’s the best thing about a plot…it can change and adjust as you’re writing. I’ve left enough open threads in both Driven and Fueled that I can always move or adjust things in Crashed if I need to. Sometimes when you write, the plot evolves differently that I had never expected. Look, almost every story has been told out there a million times—as an author you have to try and make the same tried and true plotline and twist it enough to make it unique. It’s not always an easy thing to do.

TRC: How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of deadlines while still having time to raise a family?

Kristy: That’s a very good question. My husband says it’s like I have three jobs—my real job (day job as a bookkeeper), running the house and dealing with the kids, and then my writing. When I first started writing Driven, my husband was travelling constantly for work so once the kids went to bed and talked to him on the phone, I’d write. Since then, he’s switched positions so that he can be home more and now I find that balance very difficult. I try to write once everyone goes to bed, but sometimes that’s hard because my brain doesn’t function when I’m tired (and I’m not a coffee drinker). Luckily my two youngest will start preschool three days a week in the next month and so for the first time in almost eight years, I will have some days where the house is empty. After doing my work for my ‘real’ job, then I’ll try and use that alone time to crank out some pages without interruption.

TRC: If you could be a contestant on a reality television program, which program would you chose and why?

Kristy: Jeopardy. I have quirky knowledge and I retain things really well so I can answer a lot of the questions that make my husband go “How in the hell did you know that?”

TRC: What are your thoughts on book reviews-good or bad?

Kristy: It would be easy to say that I take both with a grain of salt, but I’d be lying. Of course good reviews make you feel validated in your writing and bad reviews eat at you and make you wonder what you could have done differently to make them like the story…but in reality, not everyone is going to like the same thing. There are going to be haters and there are going to be people that try and jump on the love train—so you really do have to take it with a grain of salt. I will say though that some of the toughest reviews I received from blogs made me a better writer when it came to Fueled. I didn’t dismiss their comments but rather looked at them objectively and tried to see how I could make the story better. Regardless, as an author you have to write for yourself first and foremost or else your story is not going to come from the heart.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Kristy: I am currently working on Crashed. Once I finish that I have a stand alone that I’ve started called Strike Out that is more New Adult with a twist of explicit that I think will surprise some people.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Kristy: Just that I’d like to thank all of the readers for their astounding support when it comes to Driven and now Fueled. I’m floored on a daily basis that somewhere in the world someone is reading something I wrote and liking it enough they are telling a friend or posting a review on Amazon for it. It’s a very surreal feeling, so I want to make sure to thank them…and say I really hope they love Fueled and that I surpassed the expectations they set for it.

Kristy: Thank you so much for taking the time to get to know me! I hope you enjoy Fueled!

Excerpt

He breaks from the kiss with a tortured groan and pulls away from me. “Colton,” I murmur, “let me take care of you.”

“Not here,” he tells me, smoothing my skirt down and smirking as he stuffs what’s left of my panties further down into his pocket. “I want to hear you scream out my name when I take you. I want to hear it when you fall apart from the things I’m going to do to you, Rylee. I want to claim you. Make you mine. Ruin you for any other man that dares to think of touching you.” He grimaces from the conviction of his words.

“You already have, Colton,” I breathe out without thinking, reaching out to place my fingertips to his lips. “I’m yours…” My voice trails off as he stares at me, his jaw working overtime as he absorbs the words I’ve said.

A ghost of a smile mixed with an uncertain disbelief plays on his lips before shaking it away and pushing it aside. “I—we can’t continue here with what I want to do, but this,” he says, motioning to me and the wall, “will tide me over.” He flashes a quick grin at me before grabbing my hand and climbing the last flight of stairs.

I follow him, knowing my heart and body are far from recovered from that little episode. Haddie’s words flash through my head, and I can’t help but disagree with her. When it comes to Colton, I don’t just have it bad. I’ve drowned, been consumed, and am utterly and undeniably his.

Rylee Thomas is used to being in control. But she’s about to meet the one man that just might make her enjoy losing it…

I am the exception to the rule.

In a world full of willing women, I’m a challenge to the roguish and achingly handsome Colton Donavan. A man used to getting exactly what he wants in all aspects of life. He’s the reckless bad boy constantly skating that razor thin edge toward out of control, on and off of the track.

Colton crashes into my life like a tornado: sapping my control, testing my vulnerabilities beyond their limits, and unintentionally penetrating the protective wall around my healing heart. Tearing apart the world I rebuilt so carefully with structure, predictability, and discipline

What happens when the one person you never expected suddenly happens to be the one you’ll fight the hardest to keep?

Colton stole my heart. He wasn’t supposed to, and I sure as hell didn’t want him to, but he crashed into my life, ignited feelings within me that I thought had died forever, and fueled a passion that I never knew could exist.

He steals my breath, stops my heart, and brings me back to life again all in a split second of time. But how can I love a man who won’t let me in? Who continually pushes me away to prevent me from seeing the damaged secrets in his past? My heart has fallen, but patience and forgiveness can only go so far.

How can I desire a woman who unnerves me, defies me, and forces me to see that in the deep, black abyss of my soul there’s someone worthy of her love? A place and person I swore I’d never be again. Her selfless heart and sexy body deserve so much more than I’ll ever be capable of giving her. I know I can’t be what she needs, so why can’t I just let her go?

We are driven by need and fueled with desire, but is that enough for us to crash into love?
