Into the Dreaming by Karen Moning – a Review

Into the Dreaming by Karen Moning – a Review

Into the Dreaming is a short story by Karen Moning, that was just released earlier this week.  She wrote this in between her other Highlander novels, and it was part of a anthology.  Fans of Moning, which I include myself, will enjoy this book.  I had never read Into the Dreaming, and found this to be a lighthearted and enjoyable book to read.  I loved the extras that are included here.  So if you are a Karen Moning fan, do not hesitate to get this book.

Into the Dreaming is about Jane Sillee, who is a would be romance novelist, who keeps getting her manuscripts rejected.  At night, Jane dreams about her own Highlander.  One day she comes home to find a box, with a tapestry that has a picture of a Highlander in old Scotland.  When Jane looks closely, she sees that the highlander is her very own dream lover.

Aeden MacKinnon has been imprisoned in Fae land for 500 years. The Unseelie King has tortured, and brainwashed him to be his very own Vengeance warrior, to do his bidding.  A dark and evil being, programmed not to feel, but to kill at the King’s command.  Aedon no longer remembers who he was, only that his name is Vengeance, and he is ice cold in every way.

The Seelie Queen decides to save Aeden, but since she cannot interfere, she plots secretly to enable Aeden to break the contract. If Aeden can find someone to love him within the one month that he is free, he will become totally free, or else be binded to the King forever. Enter Jane Sillee and her dreams at night with Aeden, something the Queen set into motion all those years before.

Jane wakes up the following morning and finds herself lying naked on the beach by the sea, with a kitten purring next to her.  Thinking she is still into the dreaming, Jane begins to explore and finds her dream lover and a castle.  But this is not the Aeden she made love to every night in her dreams.  Jane begins to realize that this is not a dream, and somehow she has been transported back in time to Scotland. She sees her dream lover as a man who does not remember her, and is totally cold and in human.  Jane understands more later, when she  hears a voice that tells her she must find a way to save him or lose him forever.

She sets out on a plan to taunt him and make him to begin to feel again, in order to help break the evil that surrounds him. I really did enjoy the book.  It was a light read, and fun to watch Jane try all kinds of things to entice Aedon.  Jane will do anything to make Aedon feel his sexuality, as well as to make him remember her.  The kitten was adorable, and a nice touch.   I won’t spoil anything by telling you what happens, but with all the extras in the book, it is worth to buy this novella and read this story.   I for one was happy to be back in Highlander time again, but I also cannot wait for Iced and Dani O’Malley.  It was fun to spend sometime with our Highlanders, but its time to go back to the dark and Fever land.

Karen Moning Exclusive: Fever Moon Cover

Karen Moning Exclusive: Fever Moon Cover

Karen just minutes ago, shared with us the cover art for her Fever Moon Graphic novel coming July 10th.

Karen Moning: FEVER MOON cover art! It’s about to go up at Amazon and B&N, etc… but I wanted you guys to see it first. Wait till you see the author photo on back (I don’t have full mechanical yet) you’re going to ROTFL! Al said he thought the work he did on FEVER MOON was some of his best ever, and I agree. Inside, it’s one of the most beautiful graphic novels I’ve seen. The colorists, Mae and Rain are amazing!

Fever Moon Description:  In Fever Moon, we meet the most ancient and deadly Unseelie ever created, the Fear Dorcha. For eons, he’s traveled worlds with the Unseelie king, leaving behind him a path of mutilation and destruction. Now he’s hunting Dublin, and no one Mac loves is safe.

Dublin is a war zone. The walls between humans and Fae are down. A third of the world’s population is dead and chaos reigns. Imprisoned over half a million years ago, the Unseelie are free and each one Mac meets is worse than the last. Human weapons don’t stand a chance against them.

With a blood moon hanging low over the city, something dark and sinister begins to hunt the streets of Temple Bar, choosing its victims by targeting those closest to Mac. Armed only with the Spear of Destiny and Jericho Barrons, she must face her most terrifying enemy yet.

Karen Moning Exclusive Audio News – JZB POV

Karen Moning Exclusive Audio on FeverJZB POV

Ever since I began writing the FEVER series, fans have been begging for a glimpse inside JZB’s head. I don’t find it a comfortable place to be.  Or maybe it’s too comfortable. Things are simple in there: there’s what you can live with, and what you won’t live without. And there’s no price too high for either. Of all my characters, JZB is the closest to a true sociopath by the terms we define one, yet has the most impeccable system of ethics of all the personalities in the FEVER world. His ethical structure is flawless. It doesn’t contradict itself. There’s  beauty in that. Trust derives from consistency. Barrons is a consistent man. He’s also the most uncomplicatedly sexual man I’ve written.  Sex is where Barrons dumps emotion, not that he’d ever let you see it, but it’s there in his hands on your skin and it’s why sex with him is so good. Remote and controlled out of bed, he’s pure passion in it.

Last year, JZB was nominated for an Alpha Male contest and I have absolutely no clue why I said that if he won, I’d write a sex scene from his point of view. None.  I think I must have been temporarily possessed by V’lane who was pissed off that he wasn’t in the contest, and hoped I’d screw it up and make Barrons look less awesome and hot and epic than he is.

Once I shared the scene via my Facebook page, I began getting deluged with emails asking me to ask my audiobook narrators, Phil Gigante and Natalie Ross (Faefever, Dreamfever, Shadowfever) to professionally record it. Ever interested in obliging the fans–especially if it means I get to hear Barrons having sex!– I approached them about it. They have very busy schedules, but were finally able to clear time to go into the studio together and get it done.

The Alpha Alternative download includes a scorching hot 30-minute audio recording of the sex scene I wrote from Jericho Barrons’ point of view, plus a PDF download of the text for your eReaders and computers. Because there were significant costs involved in putting this together, that range from studio time, to narrator fees, ecommerce fees, website fees, bank fees, blah-blah, I must charge for it. I give away a great deal for free but when it takes time, labor and money to make something available, I have to charge, or I won’t be able to continue doing similar things in the future.  The response will set the tone.  If people are respectful of copyright, and this is profitable financially, I’ll keep trying new things. If the work is pirated, I won’t.

Email me and let me know what you think. Phil and Natalie totally nailed the scene! Not much makes me squirm.  This did 🙂

Karen Moning Teaser

Karen Moning Teaser

ICED: Teaser 2 by Karen Moning  February 17th 8:34am

Keeping this one short and sweet as I’m heading up to MegaCon this morning!  Have I told you guys lately how much I love writing ICED?  Dani is hands-down the most unpredictable character I’ve ever written. There’s a undiluted, bouyant joy in telling her story. No rules apply.  I just follow her flamboyant heart and watch all hell break loose. My goal is to make you forget about wanting more of Mac & Barrons by the time you finish reading ICED because you can’t wait for more of Dani. I bet you think I can’t.

He isn’t what he’s pretending to be with her. I watch him all the time. I’m going to be there when he stops pretending.  I’m going to be her bulletproof vest, her shield, her fallen fucking angel, whether she wants one or not. He’s pretending he’s almost human. He’s no more human than me.

TRC:  sigh….She is killing us with these teasers, and we have to wait for October for ICED and Dani.

In case you missed this post from Moning, a couple of months ago when she announced her return to the Fever world, TRC is happy to post this again for your review:

I’m currently working on a trilogy that features Dani, Christian MacKeltar, Ryodan, and the mysterious ‘Dancer,’ set primarily in Fever-Dublin. Each installment in the trilogy is a stand-alone mystery, however there are larger plot arcs unfolding in the background.  Where Mac was introspective and her story could feel somewhat esoteric, Dani is down and dirty in the streets. Lots of details, lots of action. There’s a different feel to the two series, totally different vantage points. I’m having a blast writing it.

For those of you who have been worrying—the trilogy is not YA.  If I had to categorize it, I would say it straddles the line between YA and adult uneasily. I don’t pull any punches. It may be controversial in some ways.  But whose teen years weren’t? LOL! Many of the questions I left unanswered in the FEVER series are addressed in this new series.

Exciting news: I’ve agreed to write two more books after that. Once the new trilogy is complete, I’m returning to the core story begun in the FEVER series, and will resume writing about Mac, Barrons, V’lane, Cruce, the Unseelie king, the concubine, the Song of Making.

All in all, there are five more books coming about the Fever World!

Because I know you guys, I know this is going to make some of you as nervous as it makes you excited.  Trust me.  I’m making no compromises with the characters or the story. It’s all unfolding exactly as it should, true to itself-which means, it’s a sometimes rocky road.  Dark times ahead, guys. But I write it all with genuine love for the characters, the world, and you the reader

Karen Moning Exclusive

Direct from Karen Moning………a teaser from her upcoming new series Iced, which is based on characters from Fever.  This series belongs to Dani.

Exclusive Teaser:

Four nights he’s come to me, murmuring my name, making it an exquisite melody with which not even the divine orchestral choir of all the angels in heaven could compete.

He chimes my name in the language of the Unseelie and it makes my ears ring until my mind is emptied of all thought, until my eyes are incapable of beholding any vision other than him. He is so beautiful that merely looking at him makes me weep and when I brush tears from my cheeks, my hands come away stained red with blood.

He wakes me but doesn’t wake me.

He takes me to a place that is so perfect and serene and free of worry that I want to stay there forever.

My name is Cruce, he says. Not V’lane. I was so weary of wearing his golden shining face. He was never half the Fae I am. I have you in the Dreaming, is it not beautiful? Do you not feel divine here with me? You need not fear me. I am not what I seem.

I’m in danger.
