ABOUT THE BOOK:  Release Date April 2, 2013

Things are getting desperate for Maya and her friends. Hunted by the powerful St. Clouds and now a rival Cabal as well, they’re quickly running out of places to hide. And with the whole world thinking they died in a helicopter crash, it’s not like they can just go to the authorities for help.

All they have is the name and number of someone who might be able to give them a few answers. Answers to why they’re so valuable, and why their supernatural powers are getting more and more out of control.

But Maya is unprepared for the truths that await her. And now, like it or not, she’ll have to face down some demons from her past if she ever hopes to move on with her life. Because Maya can’t keep running forever.

Old secrets are revealed and unexpected characters make a surprising return in this stunning conclusion to Kelley Armstrong’s New York Times bestselling Darkness Rising trilogy.

Review:

The Rising begins immediately after The Calling ends. Maya and her friends are still on the run from the St. Clouds. Their parents still think they were killed in a helicopter crash, and Maya and her friends are not having it!! They embark on a journey that reveals things, especially to Maya, that leave her speechless and with more questions. As they trek across the country trying to figure out whom they can trust, they encounter another group of kids who have been deemed just as valuable as Maya’s group and whom have been on the run as well. When they join forces, will they finally be able to live their lives as they wish? Or, will they still be under the control of one of the Cabals? You’ll have to read to find out.

I can’t tell you how much I love this YA series. I also can’t tell you how sad I am that it’s over. Yes, there is the inevitable love triangle, but the way it plays out was a very pleasant surprise to me. There was no “I love you, oh wait, no, I love you”. There was actual thought and reasoning and time that went into the decision that was ultimately made. I loved the way Armstrong made her reveals along the way to the kids. I totally loved the interaction with all of the kids. There was loyalty, dissent, caring, love, regret and downright meanness. Other than the supernatural powers, it was totally believable. Because, come on, supernatural powers are NOT real, are they?!?!?! LOL!!

The one negative for me was the ending. I’m still not sure that I dig the resolution at the end, but even that tells me how well written this book was. I finished it almost two weeks ago, and I’m STILL thinking about it. In my humble opinion, if you’re a YA fan, you definitely have to read The Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising series. Saying they are a must read does not do them justice!!

THIRTEEN (Women of the Otherworld #13) by Kelley Armstrong-a review

THIRTEENbyKelleyArmstrong

This review is a re-post. For the past thirteen months The Reading Cafe has participated in the Women of the Otherworld (Kelley Armstrong) reading challenge hosted by Moonlight Gleam’s Bookshelf and the amazing Lucy D.

We would like to thank Lucy for the opportunity to participate in this challenge and allowing me to re-read an entire series again-for the fourth or fifth time 😉

WOTOChallenge

THIRTEEN is the final instalment in Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series. Although the number of storylines, technically cross, into the 20s (with the many anthologies and short stories available), THIRTEEN is the last of the full-length novels. There remain many stories to be told (Morgan’s and Reese’s for example) but sadly, I understand why Kelley felt the need to close the door on the Women of the Otherworld series. I am also pleased she has announced that she has, at the minimum, three more anthologies set for release starting in 2014. Let us hope that Morgan and the others will get their stories written-nothing like introducing several new characters and never revealing the exact nature of their connection to the series.

THIRTEEN is the culmination of 10 plus years of story telling all starting with Kelley’s introductory WOTO novel BITTEN, where we were first introduced to Elena Michaels –the first and only female werewolf- and her mate and ‘sire’ Clayton Danvers. But the road to THIRTEEN began in the pages of the second story STOLEN with the introduction of Savannah Levine- a young 12year old witch left orphaned when her half-demon/half- witch mother, Eve Levine, was murdered trying to escape Ty Winsloe’s compound of imprisoned supernatural beings. Now 10 years later, Savannah is a young woman, hopelessly in love with the man who helped rescue her from Winsloe’s hold, and a major player trying to stop a 13th century child killer from successfully finding a cure for mortality and revealing the existence of the supernatural race.

Many of the WOTO characters reunite in this final chapter including the revelation that someone who was long thought dead, is very much alive-and for that reason alone-a few more storylines must be written. Kelley has exposed us to many different demons, half-demons, angels and Cabals, but THIRTEEN gathers some of the Otherworld’s nastiest demons and fallen angels in a struggle between ‘the good, the bad and the lowest of the low’. Yet the one whom you would have thought wanted to destroy the world, remains an angel behind the façade of one of most hated beings in the world of religious beliefs. And with the birth of child, comes a reunion between father and daughter, and a new Pack member who reluctantly admits that family is more important than pride.

Savannah and Adam will, at last, admit they have been dancing around each other for many years. Savannah’s proclamation that she has been in love with Adam since he ‘burned’ her initials into a heart, and Adam maintains that their age difference held him back from taking the initial steps towards a relationship will quell the angst of unrequited love. Their relationship has been frustrating throughout the series, knowing that they belonged together, but it will be Adam’s admission that he has felt the same way for a very long time.

Our favorite PACK will reunite in a short story at the end of the book-FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. The previous Alpha will be vanquished from position in a head to head battle, a new Pack Alpha will be declared and their numbers will increase with the addition of a new member and his young family.

THIRTEEN is a fast paced, wild ride that will bring back many memories from the previous storylines. Cassandra and Aaron will sacrifice themselves to save a once-beloved Cabal member, while Jasper Haig is released to ensure Hope survives the end of the world. Many of the demon fathers make an appearance as the wall between the worlds slowly disintegrates, but the open portal will allow a beast so frightening, that even the powers of the supernatural are useless against its’ attack. THIRTEEN is a wonderful end to a fantastic series that will be missed by so many readers and friends. I would like to thank the talented Kelley Armstrong for allowing me to ride along on the amazing adventures of Elena, Clay and the Pack. They will truly be missed.

Forbidden (Otherworld #10.1) by Kelley Armstrong-a review

FORBIDDEN (Otherworld #10.1 ) by Kelley Armstrong- a review

Forbidden

ABOUT THE BOOK: The team-spirit sign by the side of the highway seems a good omen to loner Morgan Walsh, as he drives to what could be the most important visit of his life — a chance to join the North American Pack. Then he wakes naked in the woods, surrounded by wolf tracks and a ring of suspicious cops. The situation only gets worse when he’s bailed out by Alpha-elect Elena Michaels and Clayton Danvers, her terrifying enforcer and mate.

Disappointed that such a promising young werewolf risked exposing them, Elena isn’t expecting anything from the pesky retrieval job except some much-needed alone time with Clay. Instead, she finds a different kind of evil stalking the streets and forests of Westwood, New York. Trapped in town by a snowstorm and sabotage, Elena, Clay and Morgan must find the mysterious threat before it sets its sights on them.

REVIEW: FORBIDDEN is the latest release (December 31, 2012) in Kelley Armstrong’s Otherworld series. When Kelley’s Women of the Otherworld series ended with THIRTEEN mid 2012, she let her fans know she would continue the series with novellas and short stories. December 2012 saw the release of two novellas from her continuing Otherworld series AMITYVILLE HORRIBLE (Jaime Vegas) and FORBIDDEN (The Werewolves with Morgan Walsh).

Forbidden was an interesting storyline but a familiar one as well. We first met Morgan Walsh, a ‘mutt’ werewolf in Frostbitten, during one of Clay and Elena’s adventures in Alaska. At the time, Morgan was invited back to Stonehaven (the New York Pack Den) to get to know the other wolves. Forbidden focuses on Morgan’s trip to New York and his indecision to join the strongest pack in the United States. Morgan will find himself in the unenviable position as the town’s scapegoat for a series of murders and missing young men.

Now here is where the familiarity falls into play-FORBIDDEN reads so similarly to FROSTBITTEN that I thought –wow, I have read this premise before: cold snow-bound frontier; eerie rituals and strange happenings; dismembered bodies and missing people (this time young males); strange reclusive cabin in the woods; Clay’s anthropology background will come into play with ritualistic drawings and chants; and hunting for mutt or rogue werewolves. There is even the late night snow runs and romping in the great outdoors where the wolves come upon a buried body in the snow and, add Morgan Walsh the reluctant pack wolf, and the premise is almost identical.

I am a big fan of Kelley’s Otherworld series but FORBIDDEN was more of the same. I was hoping for more information about Morgan-his beginnings, his family and his brother Blaine. There is very little in the way of getting to know Morgan-he spends most of his time in custody or trying to find Clay’s good side-if he had one. And yet, Morgan admits, once again, he is not a fighter and does not know if he will bring anything new to the pack-again-same as in Frostbitten.

FORBIDDEN is a quick read and a well-written storyline, but one that does not necessarily add anything new to the series. I am reluctant to be negative because Kelley’s Women of the Otherworld as well as her Otherworld series are one of my favorite paranormal series, especially when the storylines involve the werewolves and FORBIDDEN was all about the wolves. If you are a fan of Kelley’s series, this storyline will be familiar but it is one that we will all want to read.

Waking The Witch (WOTO #11) by Kelley Armstrong-a review

WAKING THE WITCH (WOTO #11) by Kelley Armstrong- a review

Waking The Witch

January 2013 is the eleventh month in moonlightgleam.com Women of the Otherworld (by Kelley Armstrong) reading challenge. Each month, participating sites post a review of the scheduled storyline. This month’s challenge is: WAKING THE WITCH

WOTOChallenge

WAKING THE WITCH is the 11th full-length storyline in Kelley Armstrong’ s Women of the Otherworld series. The final three books in the WOTO series focuses on the now adult Savannah Levine and the loss of her witch powers, the investigation into the dark arts and the rise of demons that want to take over the world.

Savannah was first introduced in STOLEN-the second storyline in Kelley’s WOTO series. A then 12 year old orphaned witch, daughter of Dark Witch Eve Levine and Cabal Sorcerer Kristof Nash, Savannah struggled with her powers, her guardians and her attraction and love for half-demon Adam Vasic. Now a grown woman, Savannah knows who she wants but there are too many road blocks standing in her way.

Savannah is now a beautiful 21year old woman, and in this particular storyline, she agrees to investigate the mysterious deaths of two women, the only problem, the deaths are some-how supernaturally related and Savannah will suffer the consequences in more ways than one. A friend will die, another will seemingly pull away and her powers will become part of a bargain.

WAKING THE WITCH is the beginning of the end for the Women of the Otherworld series. The final three storylines follow Savannah as she must literally prevent the rise of Lucifer and the end of the world. If you are a fan of Kelley’s werewolves, the final three stories are a major departure. At one point I thought Kelley was preparing for the spin-off series featuring Savannah as the lead character when the entire focus of the last three books was Savannah.

Amityville Horrible (Otherworld Series) by Kelley Armstrong-a review

Amityville Horrible (Otherworld Series) by Kelley Armstrong-a review

About the book: “I don’t run from ghosts. ”His voice, right at my ear. “You will.”

Jaime Vegas—spiritualist, entertainer and, unbeknownst to her audience, real-life necromancer—swore she’d never do another reality ghost show after the last fiasco. But when she’s railroaded into a charity gig, she finds herself back on the set, this time with a cast of photogenic college kids, an up-and¬-coming Russian spiritualist, and a tale of missing girls and murder in New England. It’s cheesy, but that’s show business. With her werewolf Alpha lover, Jeremy Danvers, along to keep her nights interesting, it’s not so bad really. Until the bloody ghosts show up. Jaime has never faced spirits like these, and no matter how hard she tries, they won’t be ignored.

**************************

REVIEW: AMITYVILLE HORRIBLE is another new release (December 2012) novella in Kelley Armstrong’s Otherworld Series based on the characters and storylines from her Women of the Otherworld series. Kelley brings back necromancer Jaime Vegas and Werewolf Alpha Jeremy Danvers, as Jaime is once again invited to participate in another reality TV show where the ‘reality’ contestants are wannabes and actors and Jaime is the only person without any hidden agendas or motives.

Jaime is a no-nonsense personality who knows better than to get involved with ‘reality’ television programming but when a producer begs for her participation in a fundraiser using a haunted house as the background for his ‘charity of choice’ Jaime considers backing away. When a fellow ‘necromancer’ is introduced to Jaime, she hopes she has found a kindred spirit, but like all reality programming, something doesn’t add up and Jaime will soon discover that she has become the pawn in a game where ratings and shock value are all that counts.

Kelley writes an entertaining storyline that revisits some of our favorite Otherworld characters if only through telephone conversations and implied presence. Clay, Elena, Savannah and Jeremy all have small roles in Kelley’s Amityville Horrible but we get a little more screen time between Jeremy and Jaime. Jeremy is one of my favorite Otherworld characters, so any time with Jeremy is time well spent.

I am one reader who is pleased that Kelley is continuing her Otherworld storylines with a series of novellas and short stories. I am looking forward to the release of FORBIDDEN at the end of 2012.

Frostbitten (WOTO #10) by Kelley Armstrong – a review

Frostbitten (WOTO #10) by Kelley Armstrong-a review

FROSTBITTEN (WOTO # 10) by Kelley Armstrong

December 2012 is the tenth month in Moonlight Gleam’s Women of the Otherworld (by Kelley Armstrong) reading challenge.  Each month, participating sites post a review of the scheduled storyline.  This month’s challenge is:  FROSTBITTEN.

FROSTBITTEN is the tenth full-length storyline in Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series and reunites some of our favourite werewolves. Clay and Elena, with the eventual help of Antonio and Nick, are on the hunt for a couple of rogue werewolves who have been terrorizing a small Alaskan community leaving a trail of grizzly murders and missing women in their wake. As the representative for the American pack, Elena sets out to investigate the recent reports of mysterious wolf killings, but will discover that the kills are anything but natural. Leaving behind their twins with Jaime and Jeremy, Clay and Elena will have their hands full with a runaway young wolf, the Russian pack and several mutts hoping to make an impression as a new upstart pack to be feared.

Frostbitten is a storyline that uncovers a little known species of ancient shape-shifters known as the Wendigo that prefer to keep their identity a secret. The rogue mutts will force the quiet and reclusive species into the roll of protector when they discover the remains of a werewolf and the bodies of several young women. But when old memories and one-time pack members resurface from Clay’s past, Elena will find herself in the unenviable position as the bait to trap Clay and the others.

Frostbitten introduces us to several new werewolves including Noah, Reese and Morgan. Kelley will offer up a number of short stories involving the young werewolves, including the December 2012 release of Forbidden- a storyline featuring Morgan Walsh. Nick will also become the surrogate father to a couple of reluctant newcomers to the pack, and the alpha elect for the American pack will be revealed-surprising no one but Elena, herself.

Frostbitten is another wonderful and fascinating storyline in Kelley’s Women of the Otherworld series. With the introduction of three new werewolves Kelley offers up a world of possibilities for future storylines that will now, only be revealed in a series of novella and anthology type novels.
