About the book: Release Date October 25, 2016

He can’t change who he is…

A horrific childhood has made Silas the man he is today: dangerous, distrustful, and demanding. He’s lived in self-imposed solitude, convinced that no woman could ever accept his need for absolute control—in business and pleasure. That is, until a young violinist walks into one of his buildings and into his life.

She can’t change what she wants…

Haley has been struggling to fulfill her father’s dying wish: to attend a prestigious music school in New York City. But even working two jobs, she can’t afford the tiniest of apartments. Seeing her hopeless and near tears, Silas vows to help and protect her, no matter the cost to himself. But when Haley meets his every demand with unwavering acceptance and love, he is overwhelmed by her goodness and gentle spirit. He knows that the dark stain on his soul can never be erased—and rather than risk destroying the most beautiful thing he’s ever experienced, he knows he’ll have to do the hardest thing he’s ever had to face. Let her go. But he’s totally unprepared for the lengths Haley will go to fight for his love and a future brighter than the sun…

••••••••••

Kept begins with Haley down on her luck and needing to find a new place to live. She happens into a building that had a vacancy, but it was too expensive. To her complete and utter shock, the manager contacts her to let her know they had a vacancy open up in her price range. Haley moves in almost immediately and continues working all hours and practicing the other hours. She squeezes in some sleep when she can but has vowed to make it, not only for herself, but to make her dad proud and fulfill his dream for her.

Silas knows the moment he sees Haley that things are about to change. Once he hears the soothing sounds of her violin in the wee hours of the morning, he quickly starts to look forward to it…night after night. However, when Haley decides to bake some goodies as a thank you for her elusive neighbor, who just happens to own the building, neither are prepared for the life changing series of events that follows.

Kept is a nice addition to the Enforcer series, but I was a little disappointed. Haley’s character was well written. I loved that she was in the city attending school, working and owning her life. Yes, she was a little naïve about some things, but she was on her own and making it work. I’ve loved Silas since book one of this series. Even though he technically works for Drake, he really answers to no one. He was an enigma and chose to throw in with Drake and his team, all of whom are his chosen family. He had a horrible childhood with horrible parents, but somehow survived to become a force to be reckoned with. His relationship with Haley was “instant” attraction, but it wasn’t “instant” sex, thank God! They really did navigate their relationship in an almost normal fashion….almost. This is a Banks romance novel, by the way. Where it fell a little short for me was, believe it or not, was the way he treated Haley. Yes, he was accommodating, protective and loving, but the fact that he called her princess really grated on my nerves. It was like he was talking to a three year old. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I love Maya Banks, and just expected a bit more from him and his story. He also made some of the same mistakes that Drake had made, which grated a little more. I was expecting, and wanting, more from him. With all of that said, I really did like the book. The problem for me was that I didn’t love it. If you’re a Maya Banks fan, you’ll like it as well. I do look forward to the next in the series. The secondary characters were well written and I think they’ll have a lot to say. Well done, Maya Banks!

excerpt

Hayley sank further into the heated seat of the luxurious car as they sailed through traffic, and she smiled, unable to believe her good fortune. How fast things changed and how quickly she’d gone from desperation and resignation to excitement and optimism about her future.
Tears glittered and clung to her eyelashes.
I’m going to make it, Dad. Just like I promised. I’ve found a place I can afford to rent. I can continue school like you and Mom wanted. One day you’ll see me playing with a prestigious symphony. This is all for you, Dad. For all you sacrificed for me. I only wish you were here to see me the first time I play with a symphony.
A fierce ache besieged her chest and she rubbed, blinking furiously to rid herself of the tears that burned her eyes. It was hard to accept that her biggest—only—supporter was gone. First her mom, whom she’d lost when she was but a child, but Hayley still clung to the fleeting memories she had of her mother. Every time she looked in the mirror she saw her mother’s face. As her father often fondly remarked, she was the picture of her mother.
It was bad enough to lose one parent. Why did she have to lose both? The only two people she had in the world?
She leaned forward in the seat when she saw that they were approaching the street where her current residence was located.
“You can let me off at the corner,” she said to the driver, who hadn’t uttered a single word during the ride. “I’ll walk from there. It’s not far and the rain has stopped.”
The man glanced in the rearview mirror, obviously staring intently at her, though she couldn’t see his eyes behind the shades he wore despite the overcast day.
“I would feel better if I dropped you in front of your building,” the man said, surprising her with the firmness of his statement.
Hayley smiled. “No, it’s okay, truly. I’d like to walk so I can clear my head. It’s been an eventful morning.”
His lips tightened but he didn’t argue further as he pulled to the corner and glided to a halt. When she would have opened her door to duck out, he sent her a look of reprimand that froze her in her tracks. He got out and unhurriedly stepped around the car to open the passenger door not facing the street.
She smiled at him again, ruefully this time, and offered her thanks, squeezing the hand he’d offered to help her out. To her shock, the staid, somber man’s lips turned into a semblance of a smile, only the corners slightly tipping up.
“It was my pleasure,” he offered formally before once more returning to the driver’s seat.
Seconds later the car melted away into traffic and Hayley turned to walk the half block to her apartment, shaking her head at the most unexpected turn of events the day had offered.

Maya BanksMy name is Maya Banks and I live in Texas with my husband and three children and our assortment of pets.

When I’m not writing, I love to hunt and fish with my family. We all love the outdoors and go on family hunting trips every year. We also love to travel. One of our more recent trips was to Scotland, which was every bit as comical as National Lampoon’s European Vacation. You know the part about “Look kids, Big Ben, Parliament” as they went round and round the roundabouts? Yeah, that was us, only we couldn’t even get out of the airport in Glasgow without hitting three of those suckers.

Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of a writing career is getting to meet so many wonderful readers. There’s nothing better than dishing books with someone who loves the romance genre as much as I do. Romance readers are passionate and vocal. We love our books, love our happily ever afters, and we love to spend time talking to others about our favorites. THIS is why I love my job so much, and I’m so grateful to readers who gave ME a chance when I began my career. So thank you.

Shawntelle Madison-Interview and Giveaway with the Author

Shawntelle Madison-Interview with the Author

BIO: Shawntelle Madison is a web developer who loves to weave words as well as code. She’d never admit it, but if asked she’d say she covets and collects source code. After losing her first summer job detassling corn, Shawntelle performed various jobs—from fast-food clerk to grunt programmer to university webmaster. Writing eccentric characters is her most favorite job of them all. On any particular day when she’s not surgically attached to her computer, she can be found watching cheesy horror movies or the latest action-packed anime. She lives in Missouri with her husband and children.

LET’S GET STARTED !!

TRC: Hi Shawntelle and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations on the release of your latest novel KEPT.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Shawntelle: I’m a geek who spends way too time much on the computer. When I have spare time I love to read and watch k-dramas.

TRC: Um…please explain….THE DEN OF EVIL? 😉

Shawntelle: In the cartoon Spongebob Square pants, there are a set of geriatric heroes. They fight bad guys who are in the Den of Evil. My kids play in the basement, which could be called a den, and therefore their deed in said basement make them the Den of Evil. 🙂

TRC: You have a degree in Math as well as an undergraduate degree in Russian Studies. How has your education helped with your writing career?

Shawntelle: So far a degree in Math has given me no benefit yet as an author. The next time I do a proof or some calculus, I’ll be sure to tweet that I got a benefit. I actually have a minor in computer science and that has been helpful. I almost finished my degree in Russian Studies. (Almost!) That has been the most helpful so far.

TRC: Many authors develop an interesting in writing at an early age. What was the catalyst that sparked your interest in writing?

Shawntelle: From middle school to high school, I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy. I also read a lot of romance too. My mom had a great collection of books and sometimes we’d have a reading night where there was no TV. Just reading books. Those were some fun times. I think reading all those books got my imagination going.

TRC: COVETED is the first book in your Coveted series focusing on werewolf shifter Natalya Stravinsky. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

ORDER NOW: Amazon / Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository / KOBO/ Books a Million

Shawntelle: Coveted is the story of Natalya, a werewolf with a holiday trinket addiction. She has been kicked out of her pack, due to her behavior, and now she is afraid for her life due to a rival werewolf pack that wants to take over her hometown. In the middle of all this, Natalya’s ex-boyfriend returns to town to help the pack. The feelings between them are still strong, but there are too many obstacles in the way.

TRC: Your heroine Natalya has some major emotional and psychological issues. How much research was involved with the development of her character?

Shawntelle: My heroine first came to me as an idea after I read an article from a physician magazine about obsessive compulsive disorders. It talked about the symptoms, treatment plans, and more. Based on Nat’s behavior, a doc would probably diagnose her with obsessive compulsive personality disorder, but it’s easier for everyone to understand she has OCD. Yes, I had a lot of time to read my husband’s books (he is a physician.)

TRC: Where did the idea to write about a werewolf with OCD and hoarding tendencies come from?

Shawntelle: Whoops! Looks like I had answered that already. 😀 I got the idea from a magazine and then I asked myself the question, “What would happen if a werewolf had OCD?”

TRC: Is Natalya or any of the supernatural therapy members based on situations or people in your life?

Shawntelle: All of that came from my noggin. None of it is based on a real situation I have been through.

TRC: KEPT is the latest release (November 2012) in the Coveted series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

ORDER NOW: Amazon / The Book Depository / Books a Million / Barnes and Noble /

Shawntelle: In Kept, Natalya will face the trials in her continuing quest to rejoin her pack, but before she can train, her father disappears. A set of events unfold where she must face the man she cannot let go and the man who wants a chance at her heart.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Shawntelle: Right now, I have a few ideas. I released a prequel novella featuring Natalya and I have plans to release a prequel with Aggie (Agatha McClure). Beyond that point, I have stories planned for the secondary characters: Heidi, Nick, and Abby.

TRC: I am NOT a fan of love triangles. My heart breaks…I am a mess (*sniff*). Will we see another love interest for “ he who I shall not name”? 😉

Shawntelle: I had plans for both heroes to have a leading lady someday. That’s all I can say.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the series, which actors or models would best represent the main characters in your storylines?

Shawntelle: Interesting question. Natalya-Megan Fox (I had originally pictured a young Joanne Whalley) Thorn-Wilson Bethel (From Hart of Dixie) or maybe Channing Tatum Aggie-Deborah Ann Woll (true blood) Erica-Ali Larter or Charlize Theron

TRC: Writer’s block is a very real phenomenon for many authors. How do you handle the stress and anxiety of writer’s block?

Shawntelle: I put my butt in the chair and I just write. I use the Write or Die application and force myself to just write anything. You’d be surprised what can come out when you just let things go and write.

TRC: If you could change something about yourself either professionally or personally what would it be and why?

Shawntelle: I think I’d give myself more patience. Every now and then I have to say to myself, “Why are you in a hurry? Won’t the world continue to turn if things don’t go at the speed you want?”

TRC: Many authors believe that listening to music helps with their creative energy. Do you listen to music as you write and if so, which style of music do you prefer and why?

Shawntelle: Definitely! I love to listen to music as I write. I actually have a channel on Pandora just for writing. I prefer moody music that evokes an emotional response. It can be anything actually. I have my playlist up on my website.

TRC: With whom do you bounce ideas and information?

Shawntelle: I have a critique group of other writers.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Shawntelle: I’m working on a few proposals and novellas right now.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Shawntelle: Thanks for having me!

Kept (Coveted #2) by Shawntelle Madison-a review

KEPT (Coveted #2) by Shawntelle Madison

KEPT is the second storyline (November 27, 2012 release) in Shawntelle Madison’s paranormal Coveted series. Now that her return to the pack was to be tested, Natalya Stravinsky would have to overcome a few obstacles including her OCDs, a penchant for collecting holiday ornaments and a broken heart that has been five years in the making. But when her father is called in to repay a ‘moon debt’ to another pack, it will be Natalya and her therapy group of supernatural friends that will make right a wrong from so many years ago.

As in the previous storyline, Natalya continues to suffer through a series of emotional disorders that hamper her life as both human and wolf. When her father does not return from repaying a debt, Natalya, along with her brother Alex and pack alpha Thorn will venture into enemy territory. But no sooner do they arrive when Nat must make a decision that could affect everyone she loves. Hoping to save her father’s life, Nat agrees to repay the debt herself and in doing so, has now risked her own life.

Nick continues as Natalya’s therapy buddy as well as something more. As a wizard, it was Nick who was instrumental in helping Natalya when the Long Island Pack wanted to take her life, but now that they are on an adventure to save her father, Nick will profess that his feelings for Nat are more than just friendship. But Nat’s heart has and always will be lost to Thorn, even though he is promised to someone else. I am terrible with the love triangles. I am not a fan. I want everyone to be happy. Love triangles suck!!

Shawntelle once again brings together the many varied and vibrant supernatural friends from therapy. As Heidi continues to struggle with her fear of the ocean, she and Abby, along with Nick will join Natalya as she endeavors to repay her father’s moon debt. But the cargo they must transport is magical and the power emanating from the most unlikely of passengers will help Nat as she keeps her promise for her father.

Throughout the storyline, Thorn continues to send mixed signals to Nat. She has never stopped loving the man who is now the pack alpha, but his betrothal to another has all but shattered her heart. Thorn will reveal the truth behind the nature of the union, and in doing so will admit to Nat the truth. And all too soon, Nat would become the target of a very enraged alpha-female to be, and must accept a fight to the death in order to prove her worthiness.

Shawntelle writes a fast paced, engaging storyline that kept my attention from the very first page. Although at times my heart broke when Natalya’s fears and anxieties would overcome such a young woman, it only made it worse knowing that there were members of her family who believed she wasn’t worth the air that she breathed. Many people suffering rejection and loss will sympathize with the heroine but it was, at times, difficult to read how badly she wanted to fit in and those who professed to be family could destroy her with only a few words-sometimes family need to be shown the door. Shawntelle takes us on an emotional ride that is very reminiscent of many of today’s real-life stories. But I was hoping for Natalya to make some sort of breakthrough.  In fact some of her problems are compounded by her lifestyle decisions.  And the love  triangle is difficult in any storyline. Congratulations on another new release. I hope everyone gets a chance to read the Coveted series by Shawntelle Madison.
