ATTACK OF THE AUTOMOTONS (Airship Adventure Chronicles #3-Vol 1) by Lara Nance

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release February 2013

The adventure continues as Lady Arabella, Rett and friends chase after the evil Dr. Krakov in hopes they can stop his attack on Aereopolis. Faced with albino cannibal pygmies, snow monsters and angry mountain men, while fighting devastating storms against impossible odds, they are forced to use every possible resource to stay alive. Krakov escapes all attempts to thwart him and rains his deadly automatons on the capital city in a conflagration that will spread to the entire world. Belle and Rett must put their feelings for each other on hold while they face the evil doctor in a final showdown for the fate of all mankind.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: ATTACK OF THE AUTOMATONS is the third storyline in Lara Nance’s Airship Adventure Chronicles-Volume one. Although this installment wraps up this particular arc, there is plenty of room for future storylines.

Once again, Lara Nance takes the reader on an ‘Indiana Jones’ style airship adventure around the imaginary globe to places with mythical flesh eating creatures, the open waters of the ocean, the dry arid desert and the frozen tundra of a snow bound land. When last we saw Belle, Rett and the gang, they were still in pursuit of the infamous Dr. Krakov.

This particular storyline focuses more on the journey and the hazards of flying with limited supplies and fuel. The crew must battle winter storms and cannibals, a dwindling supply of fuel, a struggle to keep the airship afloat, the angst and anxiety of two people who refuse to acknowledge their love-all the while sending messages back to the queen about an impending war between the humans on earth and Dr. Krakov’s army of armed and dangerous automotons (robots). Thank goodness for the talented and crazy ideas of Benji-Belle’s foster brother-who continues to amaze and astound the others with his inventions for and against armed attack. Without Benji, they would have died within the first couple of chapters of book one.

Lara Nance pulls the reader into a fantasy world where science fiction meets the industrial revolution resulting in the steampunk writing genre where your imagination can go wild with any number of mechanical and steam driven inventions. Attack of the Automotons is a story of adventure and the building relationship, albeit frustrating, between Belle and Rett but in the end, Belle knows where her heart belongs.

If you like steampunk airship travel adventures ala Indian Jones and the wild west (think about the TV show or movie WILD, WILD WEST), Lara Nance’s Airship Adventure Chronicles is a fascinating series and one that will peak your curiosity about steampunk and science fiction.

The Allure of Steampunk
By Lara Nance

So, what is it about steampunk that is alluring?

Perhaps you’ve thought about writing a steampunk novel? Now may be the best time ever. Or maybe you’d like to try reading a book in that genre but don’t know where to start.

Lara Nance Steampunk Trilogy

First of all, What is steampunk? There are as many definitions as there are people giving them. Here’s mine:

AutomotonIt’s a Victorian themed world, where steam is the power of the day, running everything from furnaces to automatons. There are iconic images that pop up in this world, such as: corsets (worn on the outside, of course), goggles, top hats, pocket watches, airships, an occasional octopus, and lots of gadgets made from clockwork parts.

People are flocking to steampunk. The last convention I attended, Steamcon IV in Seattle this past October, had around 3,000 attendants. And that’s only one of hundreds of other conventions and events around the world. You can check out information about conventions and local groups at www.airshipambassador.com

What’s the allure? Speaking for myself, I think it’s the romance of the era. There’s adventure on every corner with airship pirates, mad scientists and clockwork monsters. Fashion is at the forefront with everything from bustled satin ball-gowns, to bustiers and fishnet hose, to leather, chains and studs.

SteampunkCostumes

Some people say steampunk is when Goths discovered the color brown…But the beauty of steampunk is that you make of it what you want. You can go for a genteel Victorian flavor or a leather bristling with weapons look. Or, a combination of the two. If you don’t want to create your own outfit, there are shops on the internet with everything you need. My favorites are steampunkthreads.com and clockworkcouture.com. Etsy has a huge variety of folks selling their original steampunk jewelry.

Inventions are key. You can invent a steam powered computer or a clockwork robot. Weapons are only as limited as your imagination, as long as you stick to the clockwork/steam scenario.

For the winter fashion shows I saw major fashion designers incorporate steampunk into their fall lines, Movies add steampunk elements that never existed in the original story (think Three Musketeers with its airships and corsets, even Oz had some goggles), TV shows focusing a segment on the steampunk culture (remember the Castle episode?). Take a look at women’s boots these days – you’ll see lots of buckles and retro styling.

Now there are steampunk themed restaurants like this one: http://steamhausgastropub.com

How about a steampunk card game: http://growingupgamers.blogspot.com/2012/11/ruse-steampunk-murder-mystery.html

Want to play an online steampunk game? Try Steampunk Odyssey here: http://www.begamer.com/flash-game/242519/steampunk-odyssey

Okay, you get the picture. Steampunk is everywhere.

In 2012, people said steampunk had peaked. But in my opinion, the culture is on the rise. A recent IBM analysis said steampunk is on the rise to emerge from sub-culture to mainstream. On-line games and series are coming out everyday, new cons are popping up everywhere, and new books are coming out with interesting steampunk characters and environments.

SpectaclesSo, if you’re interested in writing or reading steampunk, the time is now. You can choose between a variety of base genres in which to incorporate the steampunk theme. Sci-fi, fantasy, romance or mystery/thriller. Add some spunky, resourceful, characters and a splash of imaginative adventure and you’ve got a steampunk novel. Don’t forget to add a sprinkle of goggles, top hats, and corsets!

Don’t forget the father of steampunk (in my humble opinion), Jules Verne. His book, Around the World in Eighty Days inspired my own trilogy. Books like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, are great examples of an imaginative high-tech Victorian era.

If you’re looking for movies, check out The Golden Compass, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Wild Wild West, or Hugo. They’ll give you some great images of different steampunk worlds.

Some people argue whether steampunk is alternate universe or alternate history. To me, it’s both…or either. It’s what you want it to be. And that’s the beauty of this genre– freedom to create an imaginary world, or simply say “what if” within the real Victorian world. You can add magic, or paranormal creatures, or stick with plain old humans.

This is a chance to unleash your imagination and take a new look at the world through a pair of goggles. Steampunk folks are some of the most imaginative people I’ve ever met. And they definitely know their history. So if you plan on using real historical events in your novel, do your research and get it right.

Oh, by the way, you’ll have to learn the proper way to drink absinthe, too.

Revenge of the Mad ScientistRight now the first book in my steampunk trilogy, Revenge of the Mad Scientist, is only 99 cents on Kindle. It’s a great time to give steampunk a try!

MURDER IN THE WORLD BELOW (Haven Mystery #1) by Lara Nance

Murder in the World Below

Amazon / Barnes and Noble / KOBO

About the Book: Released February 24, 2013

In 1922 the federal government built the largest facility for handicapped children in the country, hidden in the Shenandoah mountains of Virginia. It was closed forever in 1960 amid horrifying stories of deplorable conditions, overcrowding, illegal testing and sexual abuse of the young inmates.

Sixty-one years later, the academy is now a community college, all trace of its evil past swept away. Or is it? For under the campus of renovated buildings, escapees from the academy and their descendants still live in an elaborate series of tunnels and caves, hiding their differences and fear of the upper world.

Haven, as the residents call their underground home, is a happy, thriving community until they learn their source of power is about to be cut off. A resourceful young woman named Awen sets out to find an alternative source of energy. But someone in Haven is murdering people and sabotaging her efforts.

Aided by a professor from the college, Awen is in a race to expose the killer and hunt for a source of energy that will save Haven. Unfortunately, the murderer now has their sights on Awen as the next victim, and time is running out for the world below.

*******************

REVIEW: MURDER IN THE WORLD BELOW is the first storyline in Lara Nance’s new contemporary suspense HAVEN MYSTERY series focusing on the men, women and children who live in the underground world known as Haven. Once a former mental institution for the ‘retarded’ Haven is now home to the local college but the descendants of many of the previous ‘inmates’ at Haven now live below the surface, hiding the physical deformities brought about by years of radiation experiments and sexual assaults. Afraid of the ‘real world’ and how the ‘uppers’ will view their physical imperfections, the community of Haven must forge an existence scrounging supplies and resources from the world above. But when two of their members die suddenly from an unexplained illness, Awen becomes suspicious of the man hailed to replace the recently deceased leader.

The storyline follows Awen, a young woman who desperately wants to be normal; from all appearances Awen is normal and can walk around in the upper world, but she was born and raised in the underground community of Haven and she wants to ensure that her friends and family are well looked after. But with two suspicious deaths and another probable attempt Awen takes it upon herself to investigate the people who may be involved.

Meanwhile, Awen has begun to forge relationships on the surface. Dropping in on the poetry and literature classes, Awen is befriended by another student who becomes Awen’s lifeline on the surface. But it is Awen’s relationship with the professor that places the people of Haven in danger. When Awen’s relationship with the professor is brought before a college tribunal she must risk revealing the community of Haven to help save the man with whom she is falling in love.

MURDER IN THE WORLD BELOW is another well-written and fascinating storyline from Lara Nance. The reader is introduced to a tight-knit community of second and third generation survivors of a government institutional system that went horribly wrong at the hands of people in control. We watch as the community must endeavor to seek out new resources and a power supply; maintain order when the new leadership is questioned; and discover that one of their own may be responsible for the deaths under investigation. Lara Nance’s imagination and colorful storyline kept me reading until the very end. I cannot wait until the next instalment.

REVIEW:  RESCUE FROM THE BARON is the second storyline in Lara Nance’s  Steampunk genre-Airship Adventure Chronicles.

Again, for those that do not know about the Steampunk genre: there is a detailed description on Wikipedia at:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk  But a simple explanation  would be a ‘sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, often set in alternative history of the 19th century British Victoria or American Wild West.’

Book two finds our heroine Arabella Trunkett on another adventure of search and rescue.  In the first storyline, Arabella picked up a couple of extra adventurers as well as her ex-fiance who is now the object of her current search.  As an airship captain, Rett’s job is to pick up and ferry cargo between countries, but when one particular flight becomes victim to air-pirates, Rett is beholding to a powerful Baron who is more than willing to make an example out of Rett’s inability to deliver the goods.

Once again, Rett and Arabella’s relationship continues to grow (albeit very slow), especially during their separation.  Each remembers a different time and place-perhaps one is willing to forgive and the other is willing to start over.  But get the two of them together, along with an interfering although well-meaning pirate, and all plans go awry.  I am not sure how most Steampunk romances develop, but this one is fraught with tension and anxiety and, mistaken beliefs that lead our couple no where –fast.  There is little in the way of a one-on-one relationship as their adventures, captivity and life-threatening scenarios keep putting a kibosh on any personal time between Rett and Arabella and, when the two are finally together neither is willing to admit their feelings to one another.  It is disappointing to me, especially when you know the two are meant for each other, but there is always something or someone interfering.  Then again, this is an adventure series where this is little time for romance and sex.

Lara Nance continues a storyline similar to the Star Wars saga-one where we know the adventure takes us to strange worlds and destination with even stranger enemies.  The similarities are unmistakable, even if, the premise and certain situations are slightly reversed and placed upon different characters.  If you enjoy a fantasy adventure with a backdrop of science fiction, this series is for you.

REVIEW: REVENGE OF THE MAD SCIENTIST is the first storyline in Lara Nance’s Airship Adventure Chronicles written in the Steampunk genre.  For those of you not familiar with Steampunk there is a detailed description on Wikipedia at:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk  But a simple explanation  would be a ‘sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery, often set in alternative history of the 19th century British Victoria or American Wild West.’

REVENGE OF THE MAD SCIENTIST incorporates most of the detailed description as outlined on Wikipedia including steam-powered air-ships, finitely detailed machinery and inventions as well as the clothing made popular by the genre:  women’s corsets, fancy gowns, men’s leather jackets and helmets as well as magnifying eye pieces and special weapons.

Lara Nance takes the reader on an adventure across her imaginary world as our heroine Arabella Trunkett searches in vain for the people who kidnapped her father.  Along the way, Arabella and her ‘small family’ must fend off air-pirates, poison darts, human slave traders and assassins hoping to recover a mysterious ‘pin’ –one that Arabella now has in her possession and of course-stop the destruction of the world. Then to complicate matters, when the first air-ship encounters difficulies, Arabella must swallow her pride and accept the offer from the last man she ever wanted to see .

There is a building romance between Arabella and her one time beau Rett-but Araballa and Rett’s past is not easily forgotten especially by Arabella herself.  It has been eight long years since the last time Arabella last saw Rett and by the end of the first storyline, there is a possibility she may never see him alive again.

Lara Nance writes an interesting storyline where the world building is filled with fantastic discoveries and descriptive narrations-you can see many similarities to the ‘real world’ and where Lara gets her inspiration. And there is also something eerily similar to the Star Wars and Indiana Jones sagas in the writing style and story telling.  The central characters are heart warming and real, and even Rett’s past mistake can be forgiven under the right circumstances.  If you like a storyline with adventures around the globe, set in a fantasy-land style world, Lara Nance’s Airship Adventure Chronicles is the perfect read.

Lara Nance-Draculaville BLOG TOUR and GIVEAWAY

Draculavillecollage

Why do we love Dracula?

I have to admit, when I was young and watched Dracula movies, I always pulled for him. I wanted him to escape with his female victim and beat the good guys.

Strange?

Maybe so, but I’m not the only person fascinated with the vampire legend. It’s been going on for years, and will likely continue. People keep saying vampires are old news, but personally, I don’t see the loss of interest just yet.

So, what is it that makes us love this monster? These are my opinions, but they make sense to me.

First, of all the monsters we’ve built over the years, he’s the best looking as a monster. No one wants a date with Frankenstein or the Mummy. And the Werewolf is only hot when he’s in his human form. Creature from the Black Lagoon? Damp and Yech. But Drac is dark and mysterious and ahem, rich. Definitely the best bachelor of the lot.

Second, he has something to offer his female victim. That bite on the neck is supposed to be the next best thing to orgasm. Then there’s the whole turning into a vampire and living forever with your lover thing, too. Hey, it’s gotta be cool being able to fly and crawl on the ceiling, not to mention commanding some of the darker creatures of the night to do your bidding. All the other monsters just want to kill you…

Third, Clothes. Yep, Drac’s wardrobe rocks. A tuxedo with a black cape? Almost as good as a military uniform to attract the fairer sex.

Fourth, He the tortured male we all want to save by our love. We don’t want to be the female he kills just for a snack. We want to be the one he bites so we can live with him forever, because he loves us so much.

So, those are my theories. What do you guys think? Why do you love Dracula?

DRACULAVILLE by Lara Nance

DraculaVille

Super Ad/Publicity Agent, Talia Quinton, is poised at the top of her career to receive a much coveted job representing the world’s largest advertiser. She’s shocked and humiliated when the account is given to a rival agent with much less experience. Instead, Talia is ordered to come up with a publicity plan to bring tourists to Romania. An account not worth a tenth of the one she’d hoped for.

But she’s not called Talia the Tiger by the New York ad world for nothing. When she discovers a newly made and abandoned vampire named Drake, she takes on the job of healing and grooming him into the face of her new campaign.

Instead of touting the ancient country’s rolling hills and historic castles, she turns the advertising world on its head by bringing Romania’s dark past to the center of the presentation. She proposes they build a fantasy themed amusement park/resort for adults called, DraculaVille, right in the heart of Transylvania. And Drake will pose as Dracula, their spokesperson. A vampire pretending to be an actor, pretending to be a vampire.

Talia’s disturbing attraction to Drake is only one obstacle in her path. She soon discovers New York fairly swarms with warring vampire communities and she and Drake have landed right in the middle of their biggest conflict. On top of that, the odd members of the Romanian National Publicity Committee begin making strange demands that keep Talia constantly on the edge of losing the account and her reputation as New York’s most formidable Account Executive.

As a last straw, Talia and Drake are kidnapped by a ruthless vampire gang and forced to fight for their lives as the clock ticks on completing the assignment necessary to retain the DraculaVille account. Their only hope of gaining freedom is to consent to an ancient vampire bonding ceremony. There’s one problem. To complete the ceremony, Drake must kill Talia and turn her into a vampire. But despite her unavoidable attraction to the hunky vampire she saved, Talia’s not ready to die

Draculaville by Lara Nance – a Review

Draculaville by Lara Nance – a Review

DraculaVille

Perspective.  When life kicks you, refuses you your golden opportunity to shine (because your glow would mirror that of a beacon!), the alternative…the “road less traveled”, could be more fulfilling than you ever dreamed.  Lara Nance shares just such perspective in DraculaVille.  Talia “the Tiger” rises to the occasion and begrudgingly accepts the less than glamorous Romania ad campaign project.  She might become the laughing stock of her industry, but after passing out in an alley, post-drunken pity party of one with a broken Louboutin heel and vomit stains on her “victory” jacket, bottom looks bad.  Nowhere to go, but up, right?

How about we start with her down and out partner (with amber eyes that squint in the light) sharing the gutter alongside her?  How did she sink so low?!  And yiiikes…is that blood on his white shirt?  No matter.

She couldn’t explain the strange sense of camaraderie she felt for this stranger who’d shared her garbage humiliation.  Even here in the car, she experienced the undeniable tug to be next to him, to protect him.  She could also catch a hint of his pain and weakness.  What sort of strange connection ran between them?

Turns out, Drake Edwards had just been turned into a vampire!  Perspective?  And then some, but more importantly:  INSPIRATION!  Talia literally takes the show on the road.  Research into Romania tells her the vampire myth isn’t being “utilized” (polite term for exploited) as in North America.  Wait till they get a load of Dracula!

I know what you’re thinking:  Cheesy.  How is that remotely possible?  Of course tourism is steady for the macabre history in that region.  The discussions and conclusions leading up to labeling Drake a vampire were so matter of fact, if not handled/written well, it would have been preposterous, if not laughable.  Kudos to Ms. Nance for making the characters come to life with interesting plots and delivered with worthy dialogue.  I couldn’t get enough!

A supporting cast of characters added thoughtfulness and a conscience; something Talia lacked when tackling the project with such ferocity (hence the nickname).  When Talia began to treat Drake like a “job” and not a person who was struggling to recall the events that led up to his transformation (he did have a life, Talia!), her assistant, Felix and BFF, Gerri, supplied her with reality and kept her in line.

On a respite from learning about himself from Google, Drake agrees to the demands of the ad campaign and visits a bar to begin/gain exposure of Talia’s promotion.  Dressed to impress in all black — you know my vampires!!!  Swoon-worthy for sure.  Lo and behold…could it be?  Yes, of course:  Another vampire!  Drake is hurled into the middle of territorial vampire politics and he has to decide which faction to support — sooner than later.

The build-up of the romance was slow, but steady.  I was ready waaaay before Talia, but that won’t surprise anyone.  Talia had to move past her own walls to recognize Drake as a man and not simply a product.  Even though Talia was promoting his role of Dracula, she belittled his lack of knowledge and even hindered his vampire instincts.  When Drake took in a young vampire named Pip (a recovering pick-pocket, tee hee!) and insisted he could help guide him, Talia undermined his efforts:

“I’ll teach him.”  Drake met her gaze squarely.

She stepped closer.  “And who’s going to teach him about being a vampire?  You?  You’re like a child yourself in that matter”

Ouch (I literally wrote that in my Kindle notes).  I was also quite puzzled by the absence of Drake’s “maker”.  The issue is mentioned by the Matron of a vampire flock trying to recruit Drake; that leaving a new vampire to die went against old laws, but the reveal was never made.

Talia and Drake shared three extremely pleasurable kisses (cannot wait to reach THE moment!), professed feelings and discovered the meaning behind their pull to each other:  Armantor.    When I was reaching the conclusion of the book, and Drake and Talia still hadn’t made love, I was near desperate – there BETTER be a sequel or I was going to write a strongly-worded email.  Much to my utter relief, there is in fact not only a sequel, but it’s a trilogy!

Consider me a huge fan of Lara Nance!  I cannot wait to read the rest of this series and delve further into an interrupted love story that is begging to be consummated!  Everyone’s thinking it; I’m just saying it out loud.  All it takes is this one book and you’ll be reading alongside me for the duration…I promise! 😉
