REVIEW: LUCKY GIRL is the second instalment in Mallory Crowe’s contemporary, adult LUCKY ALPHAS erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on a group of former friends originally from Birdsville, Ohio. This is thirty-three year old, headhunter Harper Sloan, and PI Lucas Stone’s story line. LUCKY GIRL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information form the previous instalment is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for back tory and cohesion as there is an ongoing story line throughout.
SOME BACKGROUND: Years earlier, several friends in Birdsville, Ohio (Wade, Shane, Harper, Sarah and Leo) walked a very tight line between right and wrong, and the ensuing cover up was years in the making. Fast forward to present day wherein someone is trying to take down millionaire Wade Maxium by slowly revealing sins of the past.
Told from dual third person perspectives (Harper and Lucas) LUCKY GIRL follows the building but acrimonious relationship between thirty-three year old, head-hunter Harper Sloan, and PI Lucas Stone. Harper has been tasked by former high school friend Wade Maxium to investigate the sudden appearance in and around Birdsville ,Ohio of a number of ‘boxes’ containing secrets from the past but Harper is not alone when she discovers that Wade has also hired PI Lucas Stone to aid in the recovery of the mysterious boxes. But things go from bad to worse when Lucas is arrested under false pretenses, and the only way to set himself free to go in search of his past, a past he was hoping to forget. What ensues is the slow building relationship between Lucas and Harper, the search for missing money and a woman who disappeared weeks before.
Lucas Stone has no idea as to the who and why of Harper Sloan but working together for Wade meant working with the woman with whom he would fall in love. When an ex-lover and charity money go missing, Lucas becomes the number one suspect, and discovers not all is at it appears to have been.
The relationship between Harper and Lucas is tempestuous at best. Harper and Lucas are used to working alone but working together sets our couple towards a path of their own happily ever after. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense, without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
The secondary and supporting characters include some of the locals in and around Birdsville, Ohio, as well as Lucas’ former business partner Evan Park, Oliver and Meredith Reinhardt, and their daughter Lily.
The world building deviates from the search for the mysterious boxes as Lucas and Harper are forced by circumstance to hunt for a missing woman who does not want to be found. Similar to the author’s Stolen Hearts, the Lucky Alphas series follows a trail of secrets, lies, power and revenge.
LUCKY GIRL is a story of family, secrets, betrayal and lies. The premise is intriguing and entertaining; the romance is sensual and seductive but I missed the palpable sexual attraction between our leading couple; the characters are strong, colorful and charismatic. LUCKY GIRL is sexy and spicy story that adds another dimension to the author’s Lucky Alphas series.
