Now Jesse wants to join them. Convinced the Pine Tree State must have another eligible woman to spare, he buys a small island just off Castle Cove to build a home for his future family. But as he discovers, finding the woman of your dreams isn’t as easy as his brothers made it seem. So imagine Jesse’s surprise when he finds the aforementioned Miss Glace hiding out in his camper, charmingly, adorably drunk. And apparently single….

Review:

It’s a Wonderful Wife, written by Janet Chapman, is the third installment into the Sinclair Brothers trilogy.   I am a seasoned reader of Ms. Chapman, and have been a long time fan of her work, dating back to The Highlander series.  Admittedly, this is the first “normal” novel that I have read from this author.  In addition, I have not had the pleasure of reading the first two stories from this trilogy.  As I have come to understand, the story arc of the series revolves around three brothers hell bent on remaining bachelors, despite the matchmaking attempts of their quirky Grandfather.  When their Grandfather passes, the brothers are forced to reevaluate their lives.  Two of these brothers have already fallen hard….and now it is Jesse Sinclair’s turn.

What I have come to expect of a Janet Chapman novel over the years, is a fast paced, well developed plot.  Witty, and original dialogue between main, and secondary characters alike.  I expect sparks between the hero and heroine to fly off the pages.  The beautiful backdrop of Maine, leaves a reader feeling utterly transported by the vibrancy of this authors descriptions.  I have discovered years of reading enjoyment among the pages of a Janet Chapman novel, and would recommend every title released to any, and all types of readers.

I found It’s a Wonderful Wife specifically, to be relatively solid standing alone.  I did not experience an abundance of confusion, despite being a newcomer to the trilogy.  Yet I struggled connecting to the characters of Jesse, and Cadi, in comparrison to the couples who have come before them.   I missed that chemistry, and magical feel I have come to rely on for a “feel good” read.   I truly believe that people whom are familiar with the first two Sinclair stories, will have an easier time finding that feeling, and cast blame for the disconnect I felt, solely upon reading Book 3-without first reading the previous installments.

One element remains ever constant.  Ms. Chapman is a master at weaving humor within her stories.  Time after time, book after book, this author provides laugh out loud banter, mixed with compromising, relate-able, and hilarious moments for her characters.  Highly recommended, for anyone looking for a fast paced, humorous journey, located within the beauty of Maine!

 Shards of Hope June 2015

Description:
Awakening wounded in a darkened cell, their psychic abilities blocked, Aden and Zaira know they must escape. But when the lethal soldiers break free from their mysterious prison, they find themselves in a harsh, inhospitable landscape far from civilization. Their only hope for survival is to make it to the hidden home of a predatory changeling pack that doesn’t welcome outsiders.

And they must survive. A shadowy enemy has put a target on the back of the Arrow squad, an enemy that cannot be permitted to succeed in its deadly campaign. Aden will cross any line to keep his people safe for this new future, where even an assassin might have hope of a life beyond blood and death and pain. Zaira has no such hope. She knows she’s too damaged to return from the abyss. Her driving goal is to protect Aden, protect the only person who has ever come back for her no matter what.

This time, even Aden’s passionate determination may not be enough—because the emotionless chill of Silence existed for a reason. For the violent, and the insane, and the irreparably broken…like Zaira.

Barb’s Review:

Shards of Hope by Nalini Singh is the 14th book in her fantastic Psy-Changeling series. I have said this before, and will say it again. Nalini Singh is one of my top favorite authors. In every series, she gives us great exciting and romantic stories, with fantastic world building that flows so flawlessly into the next book. She never fails to give us a wonderful story that we wait patiently for, devour it, amazes us and then we mourn having to wait a year for the next book in the series. The good news is that Nalini has other series that helps us pass the waiting period.

In Shards of Hope, Aden is our hero; and we have been waiting for his story for a long time. In the last book, Aden’s best friend Vasic found his mate in Ivy. Now it’s Aden’s turn to find and feel true love with Zaira, one of his Arrow lieutenants. I loved Aden, but Zaira was the surprise, as she turned out to be such a flawed, tough, but wonderful heroine.

As the story begins, with the loss of Silence, there continues to be chaos, confusion and danger among the Psy. Both Aden and Zaira have been kidnapped, with their psychic abilities blocked, taking away their ability to contact others for help. They have very little time to find a way to escape before they will be killed. When they do get free, they find themselves in the wilderness of an unknown area, and with both having severe injuries time is running out. Help will come in the form of a changeling pack that does not welcome outsiders. This is where Nalini introduces us to a new pack, as well as later on with another one. The worldbuilding just keeps on going, and opens the door for more changelings that perhaps we will meet again in the future.

As Aden and Zaira recover from their injuries, they must alert the Arrows that an unknown enemy is targeting them, the other councils and the changelings with various types of attempts directed to create havoc and dissention among them. What follows is an intense, exciting adventure that will change the game bringing former enemies together to discover the dangerous enemy and the betrayers who are out to destroy them.

But most of all, this is the wonderful romance that builds between Aden and Zaira, both dangerous Arrows who have lived violent lives in Silence with no feelings. Aden slowly has begun to open himself up, especially seeing the change in Vasic. Zaira however is badly damaged, unable to cope with her horrid childhood and the rage that drives her. She is tough, fierce, dangerous, and loyal to the Arrows and their leader, Aden. Zaira will protect Aden at any cost, but it is Aden’s persistence to force her to see the good inside her that will slowly open the door to taste life with feelings. Aden knows he cares very much for Zaira, and allows his feelings to rise, showing her how to learn to feel. It was so beautiful to see Zaira opening up to care for Aden, other than just to protect him, and so hard to watch the rage in her rise up and take control again. Will Zaira be able to live without Silence? Will she be able to control her violent rages? Will Aden be able to teach Zaira to love and feel?

Shards of Hope was a great adventure, extremely exciting, emotional, edge of your seat suspense, and two very strong characters who had no hope to live any kind of normal life. Nalini Singh continues to add on to her fantastic world building and surprise us even more, as she moves the series into the direction that will open things up for more.   If you have not read this series, you are missing one of the best. Again, I will say that I never want this series to end…never.

Miranda’s Review

Shards of Hope, written by Nalini Singh; is the 14th installment in the widely popular Psy-Changeling‘s series.  It is difficult to articulate the satisfaction I feel as a reader upon completion of this novel.  Ms. Singh continues to dazzle with her phenomenal imagination, and unparalleled characterization.  Shards of Hope is a stunning exploration of the Psy-Changeling World; post Silence, and is an incredible culmination to the Story Arc we have received from this author, thus far. Full of twists, and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end.  Time after time, book after book; Nalini Singh has proven herself a master at teasing us with tantalizing secrets, and weaving webs of mystery.

I will begin by stating that each couple, and storyline we receive, compels a new reaction within me.  It is difficult to put into words the magic that is conjured, when reading this series.  A magic I believe one must experience, in order to understand.  It is as though Ms. Singh can shift skin as an author, every bit as effortlessly as the Changelings she created.  Ever materializing into something greater, and more profound.  With each unique journey, we are transported, and fully immersed, traveling farther than we could have thought possible.  Oft times it feels as though two Worlds exist into this one realm, that is like no other in Fiction.  In one of these parraels, we travel alongside the wild Changelings.  Readers can expect an explosion of warmth, and color.  Vibrant textures, and sound.  In contrast, the mood following the controlled Psy; is cold, and dark.  Subdued, and veiled in darkness.

While a large majority of fans seem to gravitate towards the vibrancy of a Changeling point of view, it is seeing through the eyes of a Psy; that affects me more as a reader.  I have many favorite Changeling characters, and appreciate each book for what it is individually….yet the Psy devastate my heart, and drag emotion out of me in ways I have never before experienced with any other book or series.  There is just something about the multiple faucets that compile this race, as they struggle to break the chains cast upon them.  Powerful…deadly.  Brutalized as children, and forced to extinguish all emotion.  It is incredible to read the wonder, and near innocence of their exploration of the World.  A World where previously they only existed.  It moves me beyond words at times, witnessing each Psy Character learn to live.  As the pages turn, we gradually see the dark, shadowy canvas of the Psy World, morph into a rainbow of color every bit as brilliant, as their Changeling counterparts.

In regards to this particular installment, I immensely enjoyed the dynamic between the hero, and heroine.  I loved how these two phenomenal characters; changed the game on us.  Historically; we have seen the women as the beacon of light, shining in the dark for the men.  In Shards of Hope, Ms. Singh presents readers with a Psy female who considers herself broken.  Pairing her with a Psy male who possesses a core of strength as stable, dependable, and immoveable as a mountain.  With Zaira and Aden, we discover a tangible, unbreakable bond of loyalty, commitment, and trust.  One that began as children, and continued into adulthood.  Rarely do we find a couple that has seen each other through nearly all stages of life.  Zaira in my opinion, is one of the most finely crafted, layered female leads of this series.  A woman who long ago accepted the damaged side of her psyche.  In fact, she has embraced it.  Utilizing her nature, in order to hone her skills as a soldier, and best ensure survival.  Zaira makes no excuses, or apologies for who she is, or what she has done.  Love her or hate her, Zaira simply is.  And her sheer, single minded drive to protect Adenat all costs, endeared her to me right away.

And finally I am brought to Aden.  Our seemingly less than spectacular hero.  I always, always enjoyed him as a side character.  However, if you would have asked me several books ago if I thought him a strong enough presence to be the lead male in his own book, I would have said a resounding no.  The obscure, vague, shrouded scenes he was part of throughout the later books in the series, just didnt project that vibe for me.  Little did we know, that the Author created this illusion purposely.  Little did we know that Aden has made it his goal in life, to appear weak.  Clearly, he was meant to fly under a readers radar.  I can assure you that in Shards of Hope–he will smack you in the face with a ginormous blip!  Not only is he 100% strong enough as a character to drive this book forward, but it is made blatantly clear that Aden has an intregal value to his people, and to this entire series.  Aden Kai is truly a force to behold, and everything a reader could hope for, in a hero of a story.  Deserving so, so much more credit than I am providing, but I will only elaborate with this….

Book after book we have wondered at his “gifts”.  The scene with which we finally, fully understand the truth about the leader of the elite Arrow Squad…gives. Me. Chills.

Fans of this series will NOT be disappointed on any level.  Cameos featuring beloved previous characters abound, and we even meet a few new friends along the way.  Fantastic news for those like me who NEVER want to see the finale of this series! What else can I say? I cannot get enough of Ms. Singh’s writing, and I cannot wait to see where she takes us next!

Interview-Gold

Welcome back, Nalini. Thank you for taking the time to revisit us at The Reading Cafe, to discuss your new release Shards of Hope, as well as to give us an update as to what you have in store for us in 2015/2016.

Nalini: It’s lovely to be back. 🙂

TRC:  You have just released the 14th book in your Psy/Changeling series. For those who may not have read this series, would you please give us a brief description of the premise of the series?

Nalini: The Psy-Changeling series is set in a world very like our own, except that it is peopled by three races: The Psy, who have conditioned all emotion out of themselves in an effort to fight the insanity and violence that is the flipside to their incredible psychic gifts.

The changelings, who can shapeshift into leopards and wolves, eagles and falcons, and who are as tactile and as warm as the Psy are cold.

And, the humans, who are caught between these two powerful races. Often considered the weakest of the three, humans nonetheless have a critical role to play in this world.

Shards of Hope June 2015TRC:  Shards of Hope is being released today. I know this is Aden’s book, and all your fans have been dying for his story. However, that being said, we bite our nails awaiting each and every one of your books in this series. 🙂    Can you give us a brief description of Shards of Hope?

Nalini:  This is the story of two very dangerous, broken people who have to find a way to each other. At the same time, they have to fight off an enemy that is out to not only kill Aden and Zaira, but that wants to destroy the entire Arrow Squad. A squad full of deadly men and women the world needs, but that it looks upon with suspicion and fear.

It’s a love story between two people—passionate and heartbreaking and hopeful. But it’s also a story of a leader’s love for his people, and of his people’s devotion to him. To be an Arrow is to be family. Always.

TRC:  I ask this question with a grieving heart. We know the end is near for this series, and you will be starting a new arc, but can you give us an update if Shards of Hope is the end of this arc or if there will be more for Psy/Changeling?

Nalini:   There’s no reason to be sad! I call this the end of Season 1, or the Silence arc. Just like in a television series, season 2 won’t abandon all the characters we’ve come to know and love. We’ll just be moving on to another part of the storyline – nothing in this series is ever static. People change, the world changes, and we’re along for the entire ride.

I did a ginormous post about the future of the Psy-Changeling series on my blog, if you’re interested in further info. (It would fill up this entire interview if I copied it over!)

TRC:  sigh  ok, I feel better 🙂

Archangels LegionTRC:  Last October you released the 7th book, Archangel’s Legion, in your fabulous Guild Hunter series.   What can you tell us about the 8th book, which we anxiously expect in November? Also how many books do you anticipate for this series (hopefully many, many more)?

Nalini:  The next book is Archangel’s Enigma. It features the feral, beautiful, and wildly enigmatic Naasir, a vampire who isn’t quite a vampire, and who has the scent of a tiger on the hunt. His heroine is smart and far more than she seems. Together, they’re hell on wheels. 😉

You can read the full blurb and see the cover, here.

I’m not sure how many books there will be in this series (I tend to think in terms of the storyline, rather than a specific number of books). I do know that this series will be shorter than the Psy-Changeling series, for the simple reason that it has a smaller core cast, and I don’t want to move away from that cast. Still, there are at least three more books to go. 🙂

TRC  In March, you released your 2nd full length book, Rock Hard in your Rock Kiss series. For those who may not be familiar with this series, can you please give us a brief description?

ROCK HARDNalini:  The Rock Kiss series is set in the world of rock stars. It’s a fun, sexy, contemporary romance series that is very different from my paranormals. It’s pure romance, no life and death action, and set in the world we know, rather than a paranormal one. (Though the rock star lifestyle is quite fantastical ;-)).

Rock Hard, however, features a seriously built and seriously gorgeous ex-rugby player turned CEO. How did Gabriel Bishop end up in a series about rock stars? Well, he kind of strode onto the page of the first book, Rock Addiction, and boom, his chemistry with the heroine, Charlotte, was so intriguing that I had to know more. Their story ended up making me laugh, cry, and hug myself like a loon. It has a sweet, romantic humor to it, and it’s a story you should read on a day when you need a smile.

You can find a long excerpt on my website.

TRC:  Would you like to share with us what you are currently working on, and what you have in store for us in 2015/2016?

Nalini:   I’m currently editing the second draft of the next Rock Kiss book (Noah and Kit’s story). This one is very intense and emotional and heartwrenching.

As this interview goes live, I’ll be starting the first stages of the next Psy-Changeling book, which will feature an ensemble cast. I want to bring everyone back for the end of season 1. It’s going to be one wild party! (Also, some pupcubs might make their appearance ;-)).

And as always, I’ll be working on free short stories that I share with my readers throughout the year via my newsletter. Anyone can join up through the signup form on my website.

Slave to Sensation

TRC:  Would you like to add anything else?

Nalini:  I hope readers enjoy Shards of Hope, and that they fall in love with Aden, Zaira, and the Arrows! If you haven’t yet tried the series, Slave to Sensation is a great starting point, or you can check out some of the free short stories I have on my website.

Also, you can find me online at:

TRC:  Thank you, Nalini for answering our questions. We look forward to continuing to read your books, and to work with you in the future. Good luck with Shards of Hope.

Nalini:  Thank you for the interview!

Burned by Karen Marie Moning – a Dual Review

Burned by Karen Marie Moning – a Dual Review

Burned Jan 15Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository / BAM

Description:
It’s easy to walk away from lies. Power is another thing.

MacKayla Lane would do anything to save the home she loves. A gifted sidhe-seer, she’s already fought and defeated the deadly Sinsar Dubh—an ancient book of terrible evil—yet its hold on her has never been stronger.

When the wall that protected humans from the seductive, insatiable Fae was destroyed on Halloween, long-imprisoned immortals ravaged the planet. Now Dublin is a war zone with factions battling for control. As the city heats up and the ice left by the Hoar Frost King melts, tempers flare, passions run red-hot, and dangerous lines get crossed.

Seelie and Unseelie vie for power against nine ancient immortals who have governed Dublin for millennia; a rival band of sidhe-seers invades the city, determined to claim it for their own; Mac’s former protégé and best friend, Dani “Mega” O’Malley, is now her fierce enemy; and even more urgent, Highland druid Christian MacKeltar has been captured by the Crimson Hag and is being driven deeper into Unseelie madness with each passing day. The only one Mac can depend on is the powerful, dangerous immortal Jericho Barrons, but even their fiery bond is tested by betrayal.

It’s a world where staying alive is a constant struggle, the line between good and evil gets blurred, and every alliance comes at a price. In an epic battle against dark forces, Mac must decide who she can trust, and what her survival is ultimately worth

Barb’s Review:

Burned by Karen Moning is the 7th book in her fabulous Fever series. When we last left off in the world of MacKayla Lane and Jericho Barrons in Shadowfever, it was technically the end of their arc. The last book, Iced, entered a new arc with Dani, Ryodan and Christian, which I did enjoy. However, there was some backlash that some fans felt that Dani, at 14, was way too young for Ryodan, even though there was no real romance between them…yet.

In Burned, we return to the world of Mac, Jericho, Dani, Ryodan and the rest of the Fever gang. I was so happy to spend time again with Mac and Jericho, and Dani, even if we only got a glimpse of her early on. Burned was a fantastic read, and I have come away with such respect for Karen Moning. She has enhanced this story, answering some of the questions left open in Iced, as well as brought back Mac in her full glory. Burned was a culmination of all of our favorite characters, the abbey and the sidhe-seers; and the ones we disliked such as the Faes (Seelie , Unseelie) and the creatures they have created; as well as the evil Sinsar Dubh, still lurking;. But most of all Moning has miraculously come up with a solution many fans were crying for, Dani being too young for Ryodan. Wow. I didn’t see this coming, and it was an amazing twist. Loved it, even if I still miss & love the wild and crazy Dani, and before you ask, there is still no sexual relations between them yet. If you want to know about the twist, you will need to read this book.

What follows is a fantastic story that keeps you hooked until the very last page. With Dublin still iced, there are some dangerous elements that need resolution. The MacKeltars are working with Barrons and Ryodan to find a way to rescue Christian from his daily torture at the hands of the Crimson Hag. The Unseelie Princes, and the new Seelie King are also around, creating more havoc. But the major part of the story is the new group of sidhe-seers, now taking over the abbey. These sidhe-seers are more like mercenaries, able to fight anyone and everything; they are led by their leader, Jada, who is bad assed & ultra powerful. Whereas the previous group from the abbey were friends with Mac, not so this newer and dangerous group.

Though everyone played a big part of this book, I felt Mac was the star and loved her. I do have to say that my opinion of Ryodan has changed for the better. We learn more about him, some eye openers, and know he truly does care about Dani.

There is so much more to tell, but it would then become spoilers. I do want to add that I absolutely love love Lor. LOL I did think that some parts, with Mac or Christian delving into the past was not necessary, adding on to the pages. But it did not change my thoughts on this wonderful book. The last half of the book was a wild ride that was very exciting, with tense and fun moments. The ending has you holding on to your last breath, and then there was a cliffhanger, which of course, Moning is known for. But I can’t wait, for the next book. I want to know more about Mac, Barrons, Dani, Ryodan, Christian, Lor and Jada.

Miranda’s Review:

BURNED, written by Karen Marie Moning, is the highly anticipated 7th installment of the Fever series.   This is a novel surrounded by large amounts of hype, controversy, and mixed reviews. If you are a long time fan, with the expectation that this will feel like the original five books of the Fever series, I will tell you it does not. If you are coming to this book with the hopes that it contains a different mood than we received in ICED, this is a complete 180. If you are coming to this book simply for the enjoyment of the adventure Ms. Moning takes us upon, BURNED will feel like the beginning of a brand new journey.

If you have never read Karen Marie Moning, and are a fan of an author who continuously changes it up, and keeps you guessing, this is a series for you. I have been reading her work for close to ten years now, and over those years, she has flipped the game on readers more times than I can count. I used to think of her work as predictable. (Not in a bad way.) I used to know where I stood when opening one of her books, and like many others, I was perfectly content with the previous style of Moning’s Highlander series. Having been a long time reader of the Fantasy genre, which is oft times dark & heart wrenching, I knew I could always count on the World of the Kelter for a happily ever after. I can honestly say that the Fever series is the polar opposite, and one of those pieces in literature that will push a reader to their limits, and beyond their comfort zone.

I did not enter the Fever world easily, or quietly. Gone was my guarantee of a HEA. Gone was my ability to discern the “good guys” from the bad. Gone was the beautiful, calming descriptions of The Highlands; and In their stead, was a dark, twisted world, where the lines between evil and good are blurred. No one is who they appear to be, and survival is guaranteed to none–let alone the attainment of happiness. I struggled many times throughout my journey of this series, and nearly gave it up twice…and would have, but for one reason. Jericho Barrons. Those that have read this series, know there is no need to explain further why I kept coming back, book after book. I will only elaborate by saying the character of Jericho Barrons truly has no equal. Upon the completion of Shadow Fever, I was very glad that I held on. In one of the most satisfying conclusions to a story arc I have ever had the pleasure to read, KMM culminated every agonizing step, masterfully.

After reading ICED, I debated for the third time, whether or not to continue with this roller coaster I found myself on. There were things I loved, and there were things I despised. One of the things I enjoyed, was seeing the world through the eyes of Dani O’ Malley. Although I do not typically find a “young” perspective very enjoyable. Dani’s narration was different than what I had come to expect from such. I found her completely refreshing as a main female lead, and as each page turned, I learned more about the travesty that was Dani’s childhood. For me, this made her vibrance all the more incredible. In Dani’s character, readers will discover someone that lives each day as if it were her last. In example, I present one of my favorite quotes from Dani’s point of view. “Life’s a choice: you can live in black and white, or you can live in colour. I’ll take every shade of the rainbow and the gazillion in between!” To put it simply, Dani splashes the dark Fever world with color. Despite my love of Dani…I spent two years on the fence as to whether or not I should read BURNED. The decision was made, when I discovered that the 7th installment would bring us back to the perspective of Mackayla Lane.

Admittedly, I have some mixed emotions about this. I was incredibly happy to be back with “Barrons” and “Ms. Lane.” Yet my one complaint…is that I missed Dani’s energy terribly. Where does Dani go you ask? You might think you can guess…you may have heard from others who have read the book, but what actually happens to Dani is something completely unexpected. Read, and learn the truth for yourself. Although we seem to be playing a bit of musical chairs with all the changes in P.O.V, readers will fall back into Mac’s perspective as easily as if we had never left. This is a heroine who has always been made up of a complex blend of dimensions. Endearingly clueless, infuriatingly self-doubtful. Like many of us in life, she doesn’t have all the answers, and she rarely knows what to do…and like many of us, she probably never will. Mac is flawed, and Mac is real. This is a character who is innately good at her core, and yet, has been forced to become a little bad. Pink Mac vs. Savage Mac. Right or wrong. Love her, or hate her. In the end, she will do whatever it takes, and she will get the job done. I find her narration unique, and entertaining on all levels, and cannot get enough of her witty, laugh out loud thought processes.

Overall, I found BURNED to be a fast paced, complicated, and jarring orchestra of events. Brimming with informative dialog, fascinating mystery, and intense emotion. Once again, readers will be unable to recognize the World they find themselves in. A place that is somehow more dark, more twisted, and more terrifying. One where bitter enemies must stand together, and former alliances fall. New challenges, and danger come forth, and everything we have learned, is brought into question. Characters we thought we knew, become strangers before our very eyes, while others, like Jericho Z. Barrons, remain ever constant. And still others, will reveal elements about themselves, we never could have imagined. After ICED, I thought I knew all the answers…kudos to Ms. Moning for changing the questions. I look forward to where she will take us next.

Fairy Tale in New York, a Holiday Novella, written by Author Nicky Wells, is the story of Jude, Carrie, and baby Maya. We first meet these characters in a previous novel titled Spirits of Christmas. Although I have not read the story with which these characters were first introduced, Ms. Wells brings her protagonists to life with such depth, and emotion, I felt a connection instantly. Considering the turn of events that have occurred for me personally this year, the magical season of the Holidays spent amongst family, and friends, has brought more magic, and comfort into my life than ever before. I needed an uplifting, festive holiday story to continue the feel good vibes. Fairy Tale in New York delivers such, in more than name only.

After a three week tour with his Rock Band The Blood Roses; our journey begins with Jude, and his long time girlfriend Carrie, awaiting a flight to spend their first Christmas as a family at home. Jude is a talented musician, who’s passion and love of his music shines through in this story. Although moderately known, and recognized by many, Jude has yet to make the “big time.” Despite being an honest to goodness Rock Star…readers get a sense of the caring, compassionate heart at the core of this man, very early on. Jude makes a split second decision, and gives up his plane ticket home, to an utterly frantic man, who’s wife has went into unexpected labor Christmas Eve. Not wishing to be separated, Carrie, and baby Maya stay behind as well, and the little family plans to take a later flight out.

Enter an Epic winter storm that grounds all flights. Fully booked hotels everywhere they turn. A city far from home with no contacts, friends, or loved ones to turn to….and this families dreams of the perfect holiday, fast becomes a nightmare far beyond anything they could have anticipated. All seems bleak, until a chance meeting with a man named Ray–during an impromptu winter stroll–changes everything. As the story unfolds, we see Jude’s one act of kindness extended towards a desperate stranger in need, create a chain of events that turn the couple’s worst nightmare; into the most magical fairy tale Christmas they could have ever experienced.

Nicky Wells manages to pack so much hope, goodwill, and inspiration into 131 pages, it is astounding. Once I became aware that things were turning around for the better for this little family, I found myself utterly dazzled by the Holiday magic woven into this story. A readers faith, and trust in humanity will be restored by the empathy, kindness, and compassion exchanged amongst complete strangers. And a wonderful twist will teach the lesson of being kind always, to everyone you meet…because you never know what, or “who” that person could turn out to be.

Fairytale in New York lives up to its Title. It is a fast paced, fantastic read that will leave you smiling for days to come. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and consider this a must read for any Holiday TBR list. Bravo Ms. Wells, I certainly look forward to catching up on this talented Authors other work.

My favourite bands include Bon Jovi, Europe, FM, Heart, Whitesnake, Led Zeppelin, Foreigner, Muse, AC/DC… the list goes on and on. I’ve always wondered what would happen when the girl next door (me?) meets a rock star. And that’s why I write what I write. Dive in and share the dream!

Review:
Dreams of Lilacs, written by Lynn Kurland, is the 16th installment into the De Piaget series.  Although this author–having produced one of my top 5 favorite series in literature (The Nine Kingdoms series)–is very well known to me, this book itself was a new experience.  Upon discovering Kurland’s wonderful, and lyrical writing style over a year ago, I have planned on branching out and looking into her other works.  An ARC from the Reading Cafe, was just the excuse I needed to find out if her romantic fantasy series is where I will strictly stay, as a reader. Happily I report that Kurland has a true gift of storytelling, one of which beckons me out of my literary bubble. 🙂

Researching this series could be a little confusing to a reader at first.  To my knowledge there are two other series’ written by this author aside from the Nine Kingdoms series.  These are the MacLeod’s, and the De Piaget’s.  My understanding is that at some point, the two have intertwined.  Despite entering this world at book 16–and after the story arc has woven into the MacLeod’s–I found that this author does a fine job of creating a stand alone flow for this novel.  I only experienced a passing moment of uncertainty, and no more than one would feel upon getting to know the details, and characters, of a new book.

Our journey begins with the female lead, Isabelle De Piaget; who is the youngest of her family.  She receives a threatening missive from an unknown source.  It holds mysterious, and vague instructions for Isabelle to arrive in France alone, or her entire family will be killed.  She hatches a very extensive, and creative plan in which to travel there, unawares of the over bearing; protective men in her family.  This “plan” entails cutting off her long hair, and dressing up like a lad…and may have been more successful, if our heroine had not ended up shipwrecked, and concussed on De Seger shores.  To make matters worse, Isabelle awakens with no memory of who she is, or where she came from.

Enter Gervase De Seger, our moody, and injured hero, who mistakes Isabelle as an unusually comely lad.  (Although he discovers his error in regards to her gender relatively quick.)  When the woman awakens with amnesia, and is nearly attacked, Gervase puts her to work in his kitchens where a better eye can be kept upon her.  Unsure of how to process his curiosity, and fascination towards the strange woman, and unaware that he is bestowing back breaking work upon a noble woman, with a very well known father.

Isabelle quickly remembers whose family of which she belongs, and yet the reason for being alone in France eludes her.  She continues with the farce, in hopes of remembering the cause, something she feels must be dire…knowing the moment her unwitting kidnapper discovers who she is in truth, would mean a speedy trip home.  The hilarity of the relationship, and attraction forming between Gervase and Isabelle is quite enjoyable, and presented in a memorable format.  The story takes a darker turn, when newly written, mysterious threats, begin to find themselves on Gervase’s doorstep.

Like I have come to expect with the Nine Kingdoms series, Dreams of Lilacs showcases a whole cast of enjoyable main and secondary characters, as well as appearances from those of previous books.  This is one of the many elements I have always enjoyed from this author, as it creates a familial atmosphere, and humorous banter.   I may have fashioned a smile throughout this entire novel, mostly stemming from the interactions between the hero, and heroine themselves.

Something I find unique unto the romance genre, and something I deeply appreciate about this author, is Kurland’s ability to build a palpable love connection between the hero and heroine, without a single intimate scene.  I am the type of reader who looks for the emotional side of romance first, and the physical side, second.  There are many romance authors, (a few who are also on my top favorite author list) with the ability to create literary poetry by blending the emotional, and physical sides of romance seamlessly.  Yet to create a bond which is equally felt by the reader, using only one side of the coin; is rare, and something this author excels at.  I am compelled to give credit to an author that brings something new, in a genre that oft times repeats itself.

In closing, Dreams of Lilacs is a fast paced, fun read, that can easily be loved by long time fans of this series, or by newbie’s such as myself.  Upon completion, I look forward to reading all the previous installments of the De Piaget’s, and MacLeods.  There are no words I can find, in which to recommend this author highly enough.  I will simply say, buy her books, and love them with me. 🙂

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release July 2013

For twenty-one-year-old Sydney, being in love with Kyler isn’t anything new. They’d been best friends ever since he pushed her down on the playground and she made him eat a mud pie. Somewhere over the years, she fell for him and fell hard. The big problem with that? Kyler puts the ‘man’ in man-whore. He’s never stayed with a girl longer than a few nights, and with it being their last year in college, Syd doesn’t want to risk their friendship by declaring her love.

Kyler has always put Syd on a pedestal that was too high for him to reach. To him, she’s perfect and she’s everything. But the feelings he has for her, he’s always hidden away or focused on any other female. After all, Kyler will always be the poor boy from the wrong side of tracks, and Syd will always be the one girl he can never have.

But when they’re stranded together at a posh ski resort due to a massive Nor’easter, there’s nothing stopping their red-hot feelings for each other from coming to the surface. Can their friendship survive the attraction? Better yet, can they survive at all? Because as the snow falls, someone is stalking them, and this ski trip may be a life-changer in more ways than one.

•••••••••••••••••

Frigid, is a stand alone novel written by J. Lynn. A pen name of well known author Jennifer Armentrout. I have never read work from this author under any of her published names….a mistake I plan to rectify immediately. Every now and then, I find myself in the mood to read a simple love story, lacking any “out of the realm of normal” elements. Lucky for me, as I would not have discovered this novel otherwise.

It is Winter here in the good ol’ North Country. And so, being the season that I find myself curled up next to my wood stove with snow falling outside–I figured this was the perfect time of year to read a novel based upon two people finding themselves stranded at Snow Shoe around the holidays. Having became friends with my now husband of 11 years, at age 16, my interest was piqued by the story arc of two best friends since childhood, discovering their unrequited love for one another. Let me just say, although I need to read like I need to breathe…I am perhaps the pickiest reader in the world. If a novel doesn’t grab my attention immediately, and keep hold, I lose interest; and have no choice but to move on to the next book. It takes something really special to captivate me, especially in a “normal” romance story. So imagine my surprise to have read Frigid, cover to cover, all in one sitting. I could not put this book down; proof that if it is a good story, its a good story. Period. When an author gets it right, it matters little what genre the book comes from.

J. Lynn shows us the journey of Kyler and Sydney seamlessly. We begin this journey with our hero and heroine secretly pining after one another during a gathering between friends. It becomes clear rather quickly that these two friends view the other as “out of reach”, even as they continue to share the deep friendship that is second nature to them. It isn’t long before readers discover that Sydney views herself as the polar opposite of Kyler’s type. Which is of course the truth. It is fact, as he has never shown even the slightest interest in Sydney as a woman, or as more than a friend.

Let me pause here for a minute and express that I typically do not enjoy first person point of view. There is just something about being allowed to only see through one character’s eye, that feels incredibly stifling for me. However, I really enjoyed Frigid, because of the alternating perspectives between the hero and heroine. Upon our first visit into Kyler’s psyche we learn about his troubled, and difficult upbringing. We learn about the losses, and suffering in his life that has shaped him into the man he is today, and we learn how these altering circumstances spawn his behavior. Syd, as Kyler calls her, is far too bright a light for him to ever approach. It isn’t long before we discover that Kyler has never shown interest, because from where he is standing, a woman like Sydney is far beyond the reach of a man like him. Interesting how these two people that know each other better than anyone else in their world….somehow…are complete strangers when it comes to what exists within the heart.

The story progresses with a planned skiing trip between their group of friends. Kyler and Sydney decide to travel towards Snow Shoe in a separate vehicle than the rest, and arrive just ahead of a massive Winter storm. They find themselves snowed in at the cabin. Alone. And with no power save a generator. Their friends are unable to make their way in, and Kyler and Sydney are left with no way out. Cut off from the group, and holding no links to the outside world, these two best friends are left with no place to hide, including from each other. The literary thermostat kicks up a notch, when an effort to stay warm goes horribly wrong…or wonderfully right…whichever way you choose to see it. Many of you have probably heard me state that sex in a story is not what I neccesarily define as “romance”. Well…let me just say (and coming from me this is pretty significant) the chemistry of this couple is off the charts. It is sizzling, and just plain hot, in a way that you need to read in order to understand. As a reader that thrives on the emotion of a story, this book gets stars all across the board…but few authors have ever made me literally fan myself…and then go searching out my hubby. (Josh thanks you Ms. Armentrout. *snort*)

However, what really grabbed me with this story, is that is isn’t all pretty and wrapped in a bow when these two face what they have been keeping inside. It isn’t fluffy and white like the snow which has entrapped them. It is raw, unhindered, and unrepentant. It is staggering when all the pent up emotion, long denied attraction, and uncontrollable love entwines, and is unleashed. Communication is jumbled, horrible misunderstandings occur…and feelings are deeply hurt on both sides. Can the soul deep friendship, and new bloom of love between our hero’s withstand such a cataclysm? More important by far….when strange happenings lead to the realization that someone is stalking their every move–will they even make it off the mountain alive?

This book was very fast paced, and current. Filled with humorous banter, and crazy, off the wall scenes that literally had me laughing out loud at times. The characters were very well developed, flawed as we all are, and simply wonderful. Such an endearing, and relate-able storyline, with a sprinkle of darkness and mystery mixed in. A Perfect read for the holidays, and one that has been added to my annual list of classic’s that I re-read every single year at Christmas time…if I can wait that long. I highly recommend this book!

The Third Kingdom by Terry Goodkind – a Review

The Third Kingdom by Terry Goodkind – a Review

The Third KingdomLinks to order The Third Kingdom:
Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / The Book Depository

Description:
The Richard and Kahlan series, beginning with The Omen Machine (which is also the 12th and final book of the Sword of Truth series) is a NEW series separate from Sword of Truth.

The bloodthirsty Jit is dead, and against all odds Richard and Kahlan have survived. But a new menace has attacked them in the Dark Lands. Infected with the essence of death itself, robbed of his power as a war wizard, Richard must race against time to uncover and stop the infernal conspiracy assembling itself behind the wall far to the north. His friends and allies are already captives of this fell combination, and Kahlan, also touched by death’s power, will die completely if
Richard fails.

Bereft of magic, Richard has only his sword, his wits, his capacity for insight – and an extraordinary companion, the young Samantha, a healer just coming into her powers.

Compelling, fast-moving, and intense, The Third Kingdom is a powerful tale that welcomes new readers to Terry Goodkind’s world, while opening up new vistas of worldbuilding for longtime readers of the adventures of Richard Rahl and Kahlan Amnell.

Review:
The Third Kingdom, written by Terry Goodkind; is the non stop. Action packed, second installment in the trilogy named after Richard & Kahlan.  Admittedly, I came into this novel quite apprehensive.  When reading the blurb from the publishers…I spent the next several months waiting for this release, debating whether or not I was even going to purchase the book.  Shocking, as I have been reading Terry Goodkind‘s work for half my life.  The blurb simply states….”If you wanted Richard and Kahlan to live happily ever after, you should have stopped reading at Confessor.”  Instantly my brain went into overdrive and I am thinking that Mr. Goodkind is ultimately going to pull an RA Salvatore, or GRRM move on me.  Killing off one, or both, of the characters with which he has built his astounding career.  For as long as Terry Goodkind has been at the top of my favorite author list….for as long as I have sang praises for the world & character’s he has created…killing off Richard, Kahlan…or even Zedd & Cara would be a deal breaker for me.

I have discovered something about myself recently.  I have immensely changed as a reader since I began the journey of Sword of Truth so long ago.  Ironically, it was this beloved series that changed me.  I never needed romance, or a love story in my literature before learning the soul deep love connection between Richard and Kahlan.  A bond that readers have come to learn Can. Not. Be. Severed.  No matter the obstacles they face.  We all want to believe such love exists, the kind of love that when never surrendered, triumphs over any, and all things.  We all want to believe it does not only exist in stories.  This is why I claim the World of Sword of Truth to contain one of the most Epic love stories of all time.  This is the type of love Richard Rahl, and Kahlan Amnell possess for each other, and in my perception….it is the entire foundation with which this world was built.  For this reason I do not want to believe Goodkind will destroy everything he has created.  Despite this cryptic line, I do not want to believe that the dust will never clear one last, final time.  I do not want to believe there will never be peace for Richard and Kahlan, because truly, if this is to be the case….what have they been fighting for across the time of 11+ books?  Why have we all been coming back novel after novel–our hearts having been broken, left bleeding for these two outstanding characters–who are just trying to have a life together?  I for one hope for, and look forward to the ultimate reward, upon the finale of Richard and Kahlan’s harrowing journey.  I not only want their Happily Ever After, I demand it, as someone who has spent time, money, and emotion on what will become of them.  I read fiction as an escape, because in reality, there is not nearly enough happy endings.  If the desire to someday see my two most favorite, fictional characters safe & happy, means I am no longer a “true” fantasy genre reader, then so be it.  Now that my rant is over, I will move on to the actual review. 🙂

Long time veterans, and newcomers to the world of the Midlands alike, will find many elements of enjoyment in The Third Kingdom.  Because we all experience books differently, I offer a little breakdown information for those attempting to decide whether or not to embark on this new journey.  Readers who were not keen on Terry’s last two works (what is wrong with you *kidding*) will be happy to know that the Third Kingdom presents a style of world building, greatly similar to Terry’s earlier work.  To put it simply…if you have missed Richard in all his “classic” glory.  If your favorites were books 1-4.  If you are a fan of Terry’s meticulous attention to detail.  The way he repeats himself often, and painstakingly adds each individual thread until we can see the whole tapestry–this book is a must read.

I will take this moment to mention that those who have not read The First Confessor, Legend of Magda Searus, may find yourself somewhat confused throughout your navigation of The Third Kindgom.  It isn’t necessary to read this novel prior to TTK, but I would highly recommend you do so.  Without spoiling too much, I will say that Mr. Goodkind produces a unique take on evil beings that go bump in the night, and their origin can be found within The First Confessor.  In Terry’s own words. “The road beyond is unimaginably dark and fraught with danger.”  This description is a tangible entity while reading.  The story begins very close to where the Omen Machine left off, and yet everything has changed.  Much like how Richard himself feels upon coming to, readers are met with a situation that is abstract, and produces great confusion.  Through Richard’s addled wits, we grasp a broken conversation between two strange men.  Richard struggles to rouse himself, taking in several facts consecutively.  He and Kahlan are alone in the back of a wagon.  Kahlan is non-responsive.  And the soldiers of the First File, along with their friends; are nowhere to be found.  It is here, as our hero struggles to get his bearings, that things take a drastic…and gory turn of events.  Richard soon discovers that even though his desperation is great…he is without the ability to summon his magic, in order to protect himself and the unconscious woman he loves.  Unbeknown at the time, Richard’s actions to save both he and Kahlan from the bloodthirsty Hedge Maid in the end of Omen Machine, has produced unforeseen, and severe consequences.  From this moment on, Richard is equipped with only his staggering intelligence, his instincts as both a warrior & woods guide, the Sword of Truth, and the young, powerfully gifted (yet untutored) Samantha; to survive.

Richard learns through an ancient message left for him alone, that once again, the fate of the World will be decided by his actions.  Somehow, he must save all of life, or be destroyed along with it.  In signature Goodkind fashion, Richard must separate from Kahlan in order to ensure her salvation.  In more ways than one, The Third Kingdom showcases a race against time, as Richard attempts to stop the conclusion heading towards him.  If he fails, his people, friends, the woman he loves, himself…and the very existence of the world; will succumb to darkness.I have said it before, and I will say it again.  Character driven stories are held within a league of their own.  The Third Kingdom is full of heart pounding action, endless intrigue, terrifying villains…and yet it is Richard whom breathes life into this story.  After half my life of watching this character transform, ever morphing into more….something magical and unexpected happened for me in this book.  Stripped of his political power, without his lethal magic as a War Wizard, we see Richard devolved back to where it all began.  Once more he is simply the Seeker of Truth.  No more, and no less.  This book resonated so profoundly within me, because Richard has only what is within his heart, and soul to utilize.  Like many times before, he is considered by everyone around him; to be the most important person who walks among the living.  The weight of the entire world rests upon his broad shoulders.  Yet he still the type of hero who would lower his sword, and provide comfort for a terrified, young girl in need, rather than save himself.  It has been a long while since we have seen Richard the man, instead of the Lord Rahl, and I personally found this element so brilliant in it’s delivery.  Regretfully there are only a few glimpses of our heroine within the entirety of The Third Kingdom.  Like with Richard, Kahlan comes to her senses with the realization that her gift is no longer at her disposal.  Kahlan, stripped from her magic as the Mother Confessor, is powerless to prevent herself form being moved from the secure location with which Richard left her.  Finding herself the unwilling guest of a man with dark, and nefarious motives, Kahlan must rely upon her wits, and finely honed skills in combat to escape.    In classic, TG style, the ending of the Third Kingdom was a massive orchestra of conflicts, danger, action….and heartbreak.  Yes Mr. Goodkind…indeed you walked a fine line with me on this one.  In some ways, I wanted this characters happiness more than Richard and Kahlan’s.  I understand the fuel you needed in order for your characters to ultimately triumph in the end, made this devastating blow necessary….but I am still mad at you. *sigh*  I look on to the third novel, and reported conclusion of the Richard and Kahlan trilogy with mixed feelings of anticipation and anxiety.  Over all, Mr. Goodkind delivers a phenomenal read with the finesse that few authors can achieve. Bravo.

Chasing Atlantis by Kelly Coughlin – a Review

Chasing Atlantis by Kelly Coughlin – a Review

Chasing AtlantisLinks to order Chasing Atlantis:

Description:
Chasing Atlantis is riveting, and exciting until the very end. A story that keeps you guessing and questioning the very framework of humanity. One girl’s courage to face the truth about her family and her past will reveal the truth about what Atlantis really represents. Amy believes her yearly pilgrimage to the beach will be just like every other time but she is wrong–dead wrong. As she comes of age she finds herself surrounded by people who want to use her, but for what purpose is still undecided. Who can she trust? Her family friend since childhood? Or this strange mystery boy who can drown her with his eyes?Only time will tell.

Review:

I try to approach any novel I have yet to read with an open mind, even if it is compiled of a style I am unused to reading in. Despite knowing that the book Chasing Atlantis; written by new author Kelly Coughlin, appeared to be out of my comfort zone, I sat down; made myself comfortable, and began.  I came away from the completion of the book pleasantly surprised in some ways, and in other ways, exactly how I was expecting to feel.  Moving on to the review….

It is easy to tell that teenagers who enjoy the Fantasy genre will love this book. Amy, our heroine is full of vibrant energy.  Although as an adult, I could not relate and connect on a personal level with her fierce, opinionated nature, I found myself amused at her antics, and thought processes.  I struggled a bit with the first person perspective, as I tend to prefer receiving third person P.O.V while navigating a novel.  However, Chasing Atlantis had a nice steady pace flowing from the introduction of the heroine, (and her humorous breakup of her current boyfriend) to the location of where our journey will take place.

In no time at all, I found the fantasy buff within me intrigued with the mystical “beings” of Ms. Coughlin’s world.  It was piercingly clear once Amy arrived at her Mother’s home, that things were not as they appeared.  Including her Mother, and her stepfather, Steve themselves.  Feeling out of sorts and an instinctual need to put space between herself and the parents who feel like strangers…Amy gets into her vehicle and drives.  Finding herself inexplicably drawn towards the beach.

What would any YA premise be without a mysterious, darkly handsome boy?  Enter Ty and his two brothers. Patrick, the eldest, silent and brooding by nature, and Henry, who is quite the jokester.  All three present a veneer of civility to hide their secrets, and all three seam to know exactly who Amy is.  How could these brothers know her when she only just met them?  And why does Ty feel familiar?  It is only a matter of time before our heroine finds herself in the middle of personal agenda’s, coming at her from many different directions.

I enjoyed attempting to discover who was friend, and who was foe alongside our female lead.  The backstories of Ty, Amy, the brothers, and the frightening Adam, was well written.  Yet I found it all a little too far on the vague side.  It feels as if this was deliberate on the part of the author? Perhaps there are plans for more adventures with Ty and Amy.  By the end, I felt as if I lacked a complete grasp on why Amy was caught between the power struggle.

Despite no specific “Ah-ha” moment; where all the pieces of the puzzle fell in place for me, the ending was filled with action, and suspense.  Thank you Kelly Coughlin for showing me that sometimes it is okay to step outside of my literary bubble and look around. I will be keeping an eye out for Ty and Amy in the future.  🙂
