REVIEW:  ROYAL PAIN is the eighth instalment in Morgan Jane Mitchell’s contemporary, adult RBMC: Nashville TN erotic, MC romance series, a part of the multi-authored RBMC series. This is RBMC road captain Raef ‘Riff’ Reynolds, and Mary Stutzman’s story line. ROYAL PAIN can be read as a stand-alone but for back story and cohesion, I recommend reading the series in order as the events of ROYAL PAIN over lap with, and run parallel to many of the events of the the entire RBMC: Nashville TN series.

Told from dual first person perspectives(Riff and Mary) with a final chapter by Kingpin ROYAL PAIN focuses on the building relationship between RBMC road captain Riff, and Mary Stutzman. Cece Green (Pagan’s sister) is blind, and is in need of a new in-house assistant in the wake of betrayal from her former aide. Mary Stutzman was raised in the Amish Community, and as such struggled with her future in the wake of an arranged marriage with a much older and powerful man. Looking for an exit, Mary applies for, and is hired as Cece’s assistant, where she will come face to face with her future in the guise of RBMC member Raef ‘Riff’ Reynolds.Riff is the embattled road captain of the RBMC: NashvilleTN chapter, and is struggling with his place in the club.The current club president Kingpin, fears a violent takeover and coup from his road captain but Riff is biding his time as Kingpin’s life is quickly imploding. Finding himself attracted to Cece’s new assistant, Riff begins a slow albeit platonic seduction of Mary Stutzman, a young woman with little to no experience in the ways of the world.

The slow building relationship between Mary and Riff struggles in the face of Mary’s inexperience, fears, devout religious beliefs, and biblical views on marriage and family. Riff believes Mary is his future but convincing Mary means to break down her barriers both emotional and physical but all is not well within the clubhouse, and the war with the Asphalt Gods MC becomes deadly and personal, leaving Mary alone for far too long. Believing she made a very big mistake, Mary walks away, and into a future with another man. The $ex scenes are limited but passionate.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters as the story line covers several months, several books, and several previously revealed situations, scenarios and plot lines.

ROYAL PAIN revisits most of the conflicts addressed in the previous story lines, and as such the interactions between Mary and Riff are stilted, limited and often felt secondary to the premise. In this, I didn’t feel the attraction between our leading couple; the palpable sexual need was pushed down due to Mary’s innocence and adamant refusal for physical contact prior to marriage, and her back and forth between wanting and refusing got old. Riff would disappear for days at a time and little information about his whereabouts or what he was doing was brought into question, hence the need to read the series in order in an effort to know what was happening and why.

ROYAL PAIN is not the typical MC story line in that it felt more like an ‘Amish’ love story about first experiences and innocence.Saying that, there was more telling than showing-I was never pulled into the story line premise-I never felt connected to Mary and Riff’s relationship. ROYAL PAIN is an interesting read in which all of the previous story line conflicts are reviewed and resolved-feels like the end of this particular arc of the series; the romance is subtle ; the characters are numerous, desperate and determined.

Told from four first person perspectives (Kingpin, Sky, Hallow, Eve) VALENTINE’S EVE follows in the wake of the wedding that wasn’t. Hallow and Eve were supposed to get married but Eve panicked when she discovered she was pregnant then lost the baby, and went on the run to protect the MC from her murderous past. Hallow, embarrassed and humiliated, went on the proverbial war path, returning to the MC only to take out his frustrations on our story line heroine, and every other woman at the club. With his wife Sky slowly recovering from a recent attack and a pregnancy with twins, club president Beau ‘Kingpin’ Strick makes it his mission to claim Eve as his own in the wake of the disappearance of Hallow Hart but a married president with an ol’ lady meant Eve was nothing more than a piece on the side, forcing Eve to run, yet again, knowing she would always come second when it counted. Coming face to face with Kingpin, several months later, revealed the secret Eve was hoping to hide, a secret that is about to tear apart several friendships within the RBMC. What ensues is the building but tempestuous relationship between Eve and Kingpin, and the fall-out as secrets and lies begin to pull the RBMC apart, secrets that reveal betrayal, vengeance and infidelity at every turn.

The relationship between Eve and Kingpin is one of the forbidden. Kingpin is married; his wife is expecting twins but Kingpin’s relationship with his wife has spiralled out of control. VALENTINE’S EVE is a complex and detailed story of secrets and lies, betrayal and vengeance, infidelity and deception, family and friendships. The premise is dark, gritty, and dramatic; the romance is impassioned and provocative but struggles in the face of miscommunication, false hopes and lies; the characters are desperate, determined and deceitful. VALENTINE’S EVE ends on a happily ever after for now-Morgan Jane Mitchell’s RBMC couples rarely have a permanent happily ever after.

Maren Davidson is working undercover at the club owned Royal Road exotic dance club. Maren’s assignment is to seduce Royal B*stards’ MC enforcer Leviathan but finds herself falling dangerously close to something like love but all is now well when Levi discovers the true nature of our heroine’s ruse, a ruse that is placing everyone in danger including Maren herself. The Asphalt Gods MC is setting a plan into motion to take down the RBMC, using Maren as the bait for our story line hero. What ensues is the building relationship between Maren and Levi, and the fall-out when the truth is revealed threatening Levi’s place in the RBMC, and his life going forward.

The relationship between Levi and Maren is one of immediate attraction but Maren is working a job for someone else. Levi has warned Maren is doesn’t do relationships, not in the wake of betrayal by someone he loved, and with it, Maren agrees that their time together is nothing more than $ex and fun but betrayal has once again cost Levi everything he has loved, including the club for which he was willing to die. The $ex scenes are erotic, provocative and intense. Happily ever afters are for fairy tales, and I have yet to see any members of the RBMC: Nashville find their own happily ever after.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including club members, club wh*res, family, brothers, strippers and friends. With the approach of Halloween, the Royal Road has set up a haunted carnival, a night when everything is about to go to H*ll.

CATCHIN’ LEVI is a dramatic story of secrets and lies, betrayal and revenge, death, destruction, doubt and uncertainty, deception and loss. The premise is twisted, dark, gritty and haunting; the romance struggles in the face of lies and mistrust; the characters are broken, guarded, and angry. CATCHIN’ LEVI ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

Sky is pregnant but Kingpin continues to question the validity of the father’s identification, and with it, his ongoing issues of trust threaten his hours into days old marriage. As the president, Kingpin has his selection of women, and with it, rubs his new wife’s proverbial face in his power to do so but all is not well within the Nashville MC organization, when Sky’s life hangs in the balance for her husband’s past transgressions.

Meanwhile, Hallow and Eve’s almost wedding finds Eve on the run, placing the Nashville chapter up against another MC. Fear of the unknown, and secrets from the past, threaten to destroy Hallow and Eve’s hard fought love.

The relationship between Sky and Kingpin struggles in the face of secrets and lies, mistrust and misunderstandings, betrayal and vengeance, hopelessness and loss. Sky’s love for Kingpin is predicated upon their original relationship, a relationship that pitted mother against daughter for the affections of our story line male lead (Royal Road). Throughout his life, Beau ‘Kingpin’ Strict had suffered at the hands of his father, then during his incarceration in prison, but Beau continues to battle the demons that often control his present.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful yet questionable secondary and supporting characters many of whom were introduced in previous story lines including: Hallow and Eve, Paisley, Cece and Irish, Leo, Marin, and Penelope.

ROYAL SURPRISE may be a difficult story line for susceptible readers, and for anyone opposed to infidelity and cheating. The premise is dark, gritty, raw and haunting; the romance is heart breaking and edgy ; the characters are arrogant, self-centred, twisted and tragic.
