Description:
Mason “Mace” Reid lives on the outskirts of Chicago and specializes in human remains detection—that is, he trains dogs to hunt for dead bodies. He calls his pack of cadaver dogs The Finders, and his prize pupil is a golden retriever named Vira.

When Mace Reid and Vira are called in to search Washington Park at three o’clock in the morning, what they find has them running for their very lives. The trail of murder and mayhem Mace and CPD Officer Kippy Gimm have been following leads them to uncover treachery and corruption at the highest level, and their discoveries do not bode well for them . . . nor for the Windy City itself.

The Keepers is an exciting, fast-paced mystery filled with courageous dogs you’ll want to root for.

Review:

The Keepers by Jeffrey B. Burton is the 2nd book in his Mace Reid K-9 Mystery series. Mason (Mace) Reid, our hero, trains dogs that can hunt for dead bodies. He works with the police, and in the last book, he trained Vira, a golden retriever that also had unique abilities to sense things besides dead bodies, such as a slight paranormal element of sensing the murderer.  Vira lives with Mace, and the other three trained dogs, Sue, Maggie and Delta as well as a newbie dog, Bill, who loves to roll in the mud. Vira is an amazing dog, with special skills, as well as a terrific bodyguard.

Kippy Gimm, our heroine and detective, who worked with Mace in the previous book, and asks him for help on a murder case that she and her partner are in the middle of.  Kippy and Mace have feelings for each other, though Kippy is gun shy from a previous relationship, so now they are just friends.  When another murder happens, this being a federal prosecutor, Kippy, Mace and Wabs (her partner) suspect a corrupt and powerful person in a top position for the police, as well has his enforcer driver (who they feel is the killer).

What follows is a wild adventure, as things escalate when Mace and Kippy bring their opinions to a high up official, who turns the table on them, and they have to flee for their lives.  They both, with the dogs, go into hiding, as the news media (fed false information) has them being wanted and dangerous.  There were so many tense parts that held my breath if they can escape. Will they survive?

What follows is a wonderful exciting, tense thriller, with non-stop action, edge of your seat suspense, and a few twists along the way.  To tell too much more would be spoilers, and this is the kind of book you need to read to enjoy.  I will say I loved the scenes with the dogs, as they were fun and even humorous. Mace was a wonderful hero, and I really liked Kippy, as she was strong and tough; I really hope they up their romance. Despite two great characters, Vira remains the star of this series, being an amazing dog.

The Keepers by Jeffrey B. Burton was another great addition to this series, as the story was exciting, suspenseful, intriguing and very well written.  If you enjoy murder mystery thrillers, with great characters and wonderful specialized cadaver dogs, you need to read this book.

Murder at Sunrise Lake by Christine Feehan -Dual Review & Excerpt

Murder at Sunrise Lake by Christine Feehan – Dual Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
It starts in her dreams. Hideous flashes from a nightmare only she can stop. Images of a murderer stalking the ones she cares about most…

Stella Harrison thought she got away from the traumas of her past. Running the Sunrise Lake resort high in the Sierra Nevada mountains has brought her peace, even though she doesn’t truly share her quiet life with anyone. Not even Sam, the hired handyman that notices everything and always seems to know exactly what she needs.

Stella doesn’t know anything about Sam’s past, but somehow over the last two years his slow, steady presence has slipped past her defenses. Still, she knows she can’t tell him about her recent premonitions. So far there’s been no murder. No body. No way to prove what’s about to happen without destroying the life she’s built for herself.

But a killer is out there. And Stella knows that this time she’ll do whatever it takes to stop him.

Barb’s Review:
Murder at Sunrise Lake
by Christine Feehan is a different kind of story that we are not used to from her, being a mystery thriller, with some paranormal element. Stella Harrison, our heroine, runs a successful resort at Sunrise Lake in the small cozy Sierra Nevada mountains.  Stella suffered nightmares as a child, giving her visions of a murder about to happen, which turned out to be her father being a serial killer.  After a couple times, the visions stopped until she was a teenager, and it started again, until the murderer was found.  Moving to the mountains brought her peace and quiet, as well as happiness for years; she became a loyal mainstay to the locals.  Stella also had a great group of female friends, who came to love their small town and each other.

After so many years, Stella begins to have the nightmares again, which she keeps a secret from everyone. Sam, who works for Stella, discovers about her nightmares, and not only is he a handyman, but he also becomes her protector; as he has over the two-year period of working at the resort, and is slowly falling for her.  Stella has become very comfortable and safe with Sam, and she also finds herself strongly attracted to him.  Sam is an ex-military, whose background is working for the government when needed, and uses his expertise to help Stella try to decipher the clues in her nightmares. One thing they both realize, is her nightmares are based on someone she knows or has touched; like her father.  Sam was a wonderful hero, though he was quiet and stayed mostly in the background among other people, his devotion and protector to Stella was amazing.   I also loved Stella’s dog, Bailey, who was not only wonderful, but also very protective.

What follows an exciting suspenseful mystery, with both Sam and Stella working together to try to find the killer before they kill again, knowing that they are getting closer and the murderer may just be targeting Stella.   What I loved about this story was the amazing wonderful friends that all came to this small town at various times, and bonded together.  Stella surrounded herself with women who were equally smart, savvy, and strong; Raine, Zahra, Harlow, Vienna, Shabina.   It was great to spend time with them all whether at the bar, or at each other’s homes; with each having their own past issues, giving their own perspective, and also trying to help Stella.

Murder at Sunrise Lake was a very good murder mystery, filled with action & suspense, as well as a slight paranormal element. I will say that there were times the story slowed down, maybe eliminating some of the extra non-essential details.  Overall, this was a great story, with a terrific couple, fantastic friends and other secondary characters. I wholly suggest you read Christine Feehan’s foray into the murder mystery genre.

Sandy’s Review:

MURDER AT SUNRISE LAKE by Christine Feehan is a contemporary, adult, romantic, suspense, slightly paranormal, thriller focusing on vacation resort manager Stella Harrison, and groundskeeper Sam Rossi.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from third person perspective MURDER AT SUNRISE LAKE follows the search for a serial killer in the fictional resort town of Knightly, on Sunrise Lake in the Sierra Nevadas. Stella Harrison has future sight; a precognitive ability of foreknowledge. In the days before a serial killer takes down his next victim, Stella’s nightmares worsen to reveal the probable location and method of each of his kills but Stella’s abilities are also tied to a horrific childhood wherein she had personal knowledge of the kind of monster that was currently taking down the people in her beloved town. Always at her side, Sam Rossi, a man whose past is awash in government secrets and military assignments, ensures that our heroine is always protected and there whenever Stella’s nightmares and dreams reveal a little more about another kill. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Stella and Sam, as our couple begin to amass a series of clues that quite possibly points to one of their own.

We are introduced to a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including a few ‘Mafia’ members that may or may not have a future story line: nurse/photographer Harlow Frye; café owner Shabina Foster; computer IT expert and contracted government employee Raine O’Mallory; surgican nurse Vienna Mortenson; nurse Zahra Metcalf; Dr. Denver Dawson; Deputy Sheriff Griffen Cauldry; Sam’s father Don Marco Rossi, and underboss Lucio Vitale. There is definitely a prior history between Lucio and Raine.

MURDER AT SUNRISE LAKE is a character driven, complex and detailed story wherein the author introduces numerous characters whose backgrounds and histories are heart breaking, painful and sad. From our story line couple, to most of their friends, each has a story that would break all but the strongest. Christine Feehan pulls the reader into an intriguing, suspense-filled and haunting story of obsession and power, vengeance and betrayal, murder and hate.

For fans of Christine Feehan, MURDER AT SUNRISE LAKE is an about-face: there are no erotic $ex scenes, everything fades to black or is mostly implied. There were a few awkward moments of the women acting a little TSTL (too stupid to live) but thankfully smarter heads, or the author, prevailed. I am not sure if the author has plans for future instalments but there are several characters with stories to tell.

As a rule, Stella knew everything there was to know about her employees, but not Sam. When she’d asked him to work for her, he had been a little reluctant. In the end, he had said he’d work for cash only. Under the table. She didn’t usually go for that. She kept everything strictly legal, but she was desperate for a really good worker who knew the kinds of things Sam knew. At the time, nearly every cabin needed renovations. Electricity, plumbing, walls crumbling. So much work. Motors on the boats. She needed him more than he needed her. She’d hired him thinking it would be for a short period of time. That short period had turned into over two years.
She stayed silent. Took another drink of coffee. Kept looking at the lake. What was there to say that didn’t make her look as if she were losing her mind? Nothing. There was nothing she could say. Even if she revealed her past, blew her carefully constructed lie of a life, what would be the point? There was no proof, and she doubted if she could get any proof that accidents weren’t going to be accidents and a serial killer was on the loose. As of that moment, even the fisherman hadn’t been found dead because no crime had been committed—yet. The killer would strike in two days. She needed to drive around the lake and look for the location.
“Been here over two years now, Stella. You never once locked that door. You don’t snap at the workers, especially if they make a mistake. That’s not your way.”
She didn’t look at him again. Instead, she kept her eyes on the lake. The tranquil lake that was so deep and could hold countless bodies if someone weighed them down. Above the lake the mountains rose with all the beautiful trees. So many places to bury bodies no one would ever find. Hot springs. Some of the hot springs were hot enough to decompose a body.
Without thinking, she pressed her fingers to her mouth the way she’d done when she was a child to keep from blurting out anything she shouldn’t say. A habit. A bad habit she’d worked to get over, and now it was back. Just that fast. Her fingers trembled and she wanted to sit on them. She hoped he didn’t notice, but he saw everything. She knew he did. Sam was that type of man. She dropped her hand back into Bailey’s fur. Buried her shaking fingers deep.
“Satine, you want help, I’m right here, but you gotta talk. Use your words, woman.”
“Did I really do that? Snap at someone because they made a mistake?” She did turn her head and look at him then. “Did I do that to you, Sam?”
His tough features softened for just a moment. Those dark eyes of his turned almost velvet, drifting over her. Unsettling her. “No, it was Bernice at the boat rentals the other day.”
Stella pressed the heel of her hand to her forehead. She had done that. Not yelled. But definitely been snippy. Okay. More than snippy. She was not a boss to be snippy or short with her employees. Bernice Fulton was older and had worked for her for over five years. She would take it to heart. “I’ll talk to her.”
That day was unusually hot when everyone had been expecting the cooler fall weather. Because it was, those staying in the resort had rushed to rent the boats, wanting to be out on the lake. Unfortunately, that included people who didn’t have the least idea how to run a boat, or dock one. Both Sam and Stella spent the better part of the evening rescuing very drunk parties of four, six and couples, as well as a single mom and her two very young children, who, thank heavens, were wearing life vests.
Fishermen had been complaining all day, a steady stream of grouchy, irritable or downright furious, mostly men acting superior, although most of them knew her now. They’d come to respect her over the years. Still, they weren’t immune to the unexpected high temperatures. Humidity when there was usually dry heat, and all the crazy tourists who didn’t have the first clue about how to navigate boats on the lake. Nor did those tourists even seem to have any manners when it came to sharing the lake with those fishing.
Stella had been yelled at, called names and insulted many times, mostly in reference to her IQ and ability to run a fishing camp—which Sunrise Lake was not, but she didn’t correct anyone.

Survive the Night by Riley Sager – a Review

Survive the Night by Riley Sager – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / Google Play / Apple / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
It’s November 1991. George H. W. Bush is in the White House, Nirvana’s in the tape deck, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer.

Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie. They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio. Both have good reasons for wanting to get away. For Charlie, it’s guilt and grief over the murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer. For Josh, it’s to help care for his sick father. Or so he says. Like the Hitchcock heroine she’s named after, Charlie has her doubts. There’s something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn’t seem to want Charlie to see inside the car’s trunk. As they travel an empty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly worried Charlie begins to think she’s sharing a car with the Campus Killer. Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie’s suspicion merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination?

What follows is a game of cat-and-mouse played out on night-shrouded roads and in neon-lit parking lots, during an age when the only call for help can be made on a pay phone and in a place where there’s nowhere to run. In order to win, Charlie must do one thing—survive the night.

Review:

Survive the Night by Riley Sager is another one of his excellent standalone psychological thrillers, which I have read and enjoyed.  It amazes me how Sager continues to give us ultra-exciting and tense, edge of your seat stories that have us holding our breath all the way.

Charlie Jordan, our heroine, decides to leave her campus and go home to her grandmother, as she is still grieving over the loss of her friend, Maddy who was murdered months ago by the Campus Killer.  Charlie meets Josh Baxter, who offers her a ride to her hometown, and needing a ride, she accepts.  Charlie leaves her boyfriend, Rob, explaining that she may not come back, depending if she still has her nightmare dreams.  She is a loner, day dreamer, introvert and is movie expert. Charlie has suffered with what the doctor says are hallucinations since her parents were killed in a car crash; which she often finds herself in movie scenes that look real.

Josh is a janitor for the school, and is heading home to care for his sick father.  They begin their travel at night, and for a while the ride is fun, as they play 20 questions to learn about themselves. After a bit, Josh begins to notice how Charlie seems to be distanced, like in another world, at times. When he stops to pick up coffee and food, Charlie notices some strange things like a driver’s license with a different name, and his address was not where they were heading.  She begins to suspect that maybe she is riding with the Campus Killer; she needs to keep herself alert and find a way to get away, especially trying to force her movie visions not to takeover. Somehow, she needs to survive the night.

I do not want to tell too much, as it would be spoilers, as there are so many twists along the way, I could not put the book down. Charlie suspicions grow and when they stop at a diner, she is desperate to find a way to escape, and calls her boyfriend Rob, who calls the police.  The waitress in the diner befriends her, and tries to help; but Charlie needs to keep Josh from hurting anyone. Survive the Night was an intense nonstop thriller, that changed the game so often, throwing me for a loop, with shocking revelations.

What follows is an intense, action packed, exciting, edge of your seat scary thriller that a had a number of twists along the way, keeping us engrossed to the very end.  Riley Sager once again gives us another fantastic story that was so very well written.  With so many surprising twists throughout, you really need to read Survive the Night from start to finish.  If you enjoy thrillers, suspense, and mystery, look no further than reading anything by Riley Sager.

REVIEW:THE UNKNOWN MAN is the first instalment in Natalie Hanson’s contemporary, adult ZALLA BENNBETT MYSTERY mystery, suspense thriller series focusing on FBI agent Zalla Bennbett.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the storyline premise, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from third person perspective THE UNKNOWN MAN follows Seattle FBI agent Zalla Bennbett on her latest assignment when a CI’s (confidential informant) children have been kidnapped in the small town of Almeda. Under investigation for something she did not do, Zalla believes the case in Almeda is punishment for sins of the past but not all is well in Almeda, and with it, Zalla begins to piece together a case that goes back a number of years. THE UNKNOWN MAN is an intense and dramatic story of mental illness, murder, torture and abuse; a story of obsession and betrayal, of vengeance and control, of secrets, lies, revelations and loss. The colorful and dynamic secondary characters are mysterious and the perfect foil for our story line heroine. Natalie Hanson pulls the reader into a dark, gritty and haunting story as one woman battles time and law enforcement in her hunt for two small children, and a potential killer who has set their sights on Zalla Bennbett.

I want to emphasize the potential for triggers as some of the scenes are graphic, although not unexpected under the circumstance, but may be upsetting and difficult to read.

Chapter Thirteen by Maria A. Palace-Review & Guest Post

CHAPTER THIRTEEN by Maria A Palace-Review & Guest Post

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 12, 2021

Chapter Thirteen is a paranormal suspense/thriller about an old woman who will do everything in her power to reclaim the life that was taken from her and the young journalist who holds the key to her success or failure.

On April 13, 1936, in Morganville, Pennsylvania, a fire occurs at the well-known Brewer mansion, resulting in a mysterious death. Fast-forward to August 28, 2005: After attending school in New York for six years, Katy Barton returns to her hometown of Morganville, when she lands a job as a reporter for the local news station. The antiquated mansion is scheduled to be demolished and Katy is assigned to get a story from the reclusive old woman who still lives there.

Katy is a “survivor” or so she’s been told, although years of therapy have not reconciled her with her own tragic past, to which she has long since been plagued by nightmares. Each time she goes out to the estate, her nightmares are amplified by unexplained visions. When she finally meets the eccentric recluse, Evelyn, she finds that her early portrait bears an uncanny resemblance to her own high school graduation picture–and the more she learns of Evelyn’s past, the more she finds that it is eerily similar to hers. As Katy is lured deeper and deeper into the old woman’s mysterious world, she begins to question her sanity, to the point where she seeks out a hypnotherapist.

In an odd twist of fate, a handsome firefighter comes to her emotional rescue, spiraling her into a whirlwind romance that appears too good to be true. Hoping to resolve her issues, both past and present, Katy reluctantly undergoes hypnosis, where she is confronted with the truth from her past and ultimately, what could be her future. But is the life she sees her own, or is it Evelyn’s?

•••••••

REVIEW: Possible spoilers…..

The story starts with a little snippet explaining about a fire…..

We then jump to the beginning of Katy’s story, after celebrating her 21st birthday with friends, she gets the devastating news that her mother passed away!!Then the unthinkable happens, she loses the love of her life in a car accident!

The story then begins five years later…..

Finally becoming a journalist, Katy is given an assignment, to interview a reclusive old lady that lives in a mansion that’s about to be demolished!

Wow! Just wow!

That really drew me and kept me reading till the early hours of the morning. Ever since the car accident that took her boyfriend, Katy has had terrible nightmares, she’s had therapeutic help and medication, but nothing works. So she’s hoping that moving back home to be near her dad will finally help her resolve some of her anxieties.

Deciding on a new course of therapy, she meets up with a hypnotherapist. They go through her traumatic account of the night Mark died. Visibly shaken she thinks it’s over, but that night her nightmares return!!

Meeting Evelyn opens up so many memories for Katy.

More meetings bring strange occurrences to the forefront. And poor Katy is left feeling a little lost and confused….Meeting an obnoxious firefighter brings about an array of forgotten feelings, but mainly annoyance at the start……But after a rocky start, the two soon fall into a pleasant routine. I think Katy needed someone like Mike, he seems like a pretty good guy.

A Paranormal story that had romance, mystery and a few goosebumps thrown in for good measure.

You do have a to feel sorry for both Katy and Evelyn, but mainly at how much loss that both Evelyn and Katy have had to endure. A few chuckle moments, but mainly a sad and enthralling read.

It’s a new author for me, and a new style of writing, which was rather refreshing. We don’t get all the details, some things are left to our imagination, do we really need to sit through dates and phone calls? Well we didn’t in this one.

The ending had me in tears. It’s beautifully written and very cleverly thought out.

I think this book will linger in my mind for a while.

After getting married and raising three children (all of whom were born and raised in the U.S.), by the time they reached high school age, I felt I needed to remind them of their heritage. I wanted to leave them a legacy, so I began writing my memoir.

I derived so much satisfaction from the process of writing, that I started reading everything I could related to the craft. I attended writer’s conferences and joined a writing group. I thought it might be nice to get the memoir published, but after a few failed attempts, I decided to set it aside and focus on my newfound passion: the art of fiction writing.

My mother was devoutly religious, yet extremely superstitious (as were many country folk from whence she came from). Naturally, as I was growing up, many of those old superstitions carried over to me. And that’s how Chapter Thirteen was born.

In my research, I became enthralled with the many different religions and their beliefs, particularly Eastern religions. So much so, that I began asking myself, “what if?” That’s how Chapter Thirteen began to evolve. Then I visited The Winchester Mansion in San Jose, California. The purportedly haunted landmark, complete with séance room, instantly became the focal point in the back of my mind of what the Brewer mansion would look like.

As far as the characters in Chapter Thirteen are concerned, Katy (my protagonist) is basically an extension of me in her thinking. She is skeptical and remains guarded in her beliefs. Evelyn (the antagonist), on the other hand, is clearly an amplification of my mother. She is devoutly religious and believes anything is possible.

If I were to cast these characters in a movie, Blake Lively immediately comes to mind as Katy. She is tall, has/had long blond hair, and is the perfect personification of the “girl next door.” As for Evelyn, no one stands out like the great Helen Mirren. Coincidentally, she played the heiress, Sara Winchester, in the 2018 movie, Winchester.

Having no platform to stand on, getting my book published was a feat in itself. After 30+ rejections, I entered my manuscript in a contest sponsored by my writing group. To my thrill, I won! This lent credence to my writing ability and was the first step toward building a platform, which ultimately led me to my first publishing deal.

My advice to writers just starting out: If you are serious of becoming a published author  (1) Develop your craft. Read all you can and write all you can; (2) Attend writer’s conferences; (3) Enter writing contests; and (4) Most of all, don’t give up.

Description:
When catching a thief requires becoming one.

Jared Towers has skills. One of them is being able to talk his way out of—or into—anything.

Audrey Abbott has skills, too. Need something hacked and only the best will do? She’s your girl.

He’s charming.

She’s reclusive.

They have absolutely nothing in common—except for a driving desire to take care of those who need it the most.

For Jared, that means assembling a team of thieves to steal back what rightfully belongs to the victims of a crime perpetrated by his own father. For Audrey, it means doing whatever she can to make sure her grandma never has to worry again.

And now they have something else in common: the art heist of the century.

It was supposed to be all business. Get in and get out, then move on to the next target. But when Jared finds himself falling for Audrey, artwork isn’t the only thing at risk of being stolen…

Review:

It Takes a Thief by Sloane Steele is the 1st book in her new Counterfeit Capers series.  We meet Jared and Mia (cousins), as together they plan on their series of heists as payback against their fathers.  A number of years ago, their fathers were exposed for a Bernie Madoff financial scam, causing many people to lose their money; a number of those people were put into financial binds. The fathers are in hiding, leaving the children and their wives to suffer the backlash against them; of something they had no idea what was happening.

Years pass, and now both Jared and Mia have inherited from their mother’s trust funds, which they plan to use to help out all those people who were hurt financially.  They will aim at their fathers’ cronies, who have valuable art, for which they eventually will sell to allow the fathers’ to return home, cashing in on those invested art.  Jared and Mia plan to steal the various paintings/sculptures, replace with forgeries,  and provide compensation to the victims; which they plan to do 12 heists (in three books ?).   But they need to find people who can help them perform the necessary deeds; so, they need to find the best in those fields who will not get caught; a thief, a hacker and a forger.

At this point, Jared takes center focus, as we meet the ladies who are the best.  Audrey (Data) is a hacker, Nikki is the thief and London is the forger.  It was great to see Data and Nikki, who are totally different, but who become friends.  Mia when meeting both of them, wasn’t sure she could trust them, but in time that will change.  Jared, who spent most of the time with Data and Nikki, started to fall hard for Data (Audrey), though she is a loner (buried in her hacking world), she too started having feelings for Jared.  London comes in later, when hired by Mia to forge a painting.  They were a very good group, and the three ladies helped each other plan their parts in the heists.

What follows is a wonderful story, giving us a glimpse at how hackers and thieves work, as well as enjoying a slow build romance between Jared and Audrey. The romance closer to the end, has some hiccups, but we do love them together and hope they stay together.  It Takes a Thief was a fun and witty adventure, as well as being exciting and suspenseful when they were on the job.  I do not want to say too much more, since you should be reading this without spoilers.  Sloane Steele did an excellent job writing this wonderful suspenseful story, with a group of great characters.   I look forward to the next two books, which will continue with more heists to come.
