Description:
In return for a random act of kindness, scholar Li Bai Chang presents young cook Kat Holloway with a rare and precious gift—a box of tea. Kat thinks no more of her unusual visitor until two days later when the kitchen erupts with the news that Lady Cynthia’s next-door neighbor has been murdered.

Known about London as an “Old China Hand,” the victim claimed to be an expert in the language and customs of China, acting as intermediary for merchants and government officials. But Sir Jacob’s dealings were not what they seemed, and when the authorities accuse Mr. Li of the crime, Kat and Daniel find themselves embroiled in a world of deadly secrets that reach from the gilded homes of Mayfair to the beautiful wonder of Kew Gardens

Review:

Death in Kew Gardens by Jennifer Ashley is the 3rd book in her Below Stairs Mystery series.  This series takes place in Victorian England, and Kat is our heroine and cook extraordinaire.  She is a smart, confident, independent, and very loyal and protective to the household staff, where Kat reigns.  Kat makes a great detective, as she is always helping solve crimes.  What I enjoyed the most about this series is the wonderful feel of ‘Downton Abbey’, with the normal household staffing with housekeeper, cooks, house steward, maids, footman, valet, butlers, etc.

Once again, Kat becomes involved in a murder mystery.  When she finds out there was a murder next door, Kat becomes fully involved to find the murderer.  It is always great to see Kat’s friends work with her to solve the crime; such as Daniel, Tess, Cynthia, Thanos, and James just to name a few.

The top suspect in the murder is a Chinese gentleman (Li Chang) that Kat met earlier in the day, as she accidently bumped into him.  Later that day, he stops by to give Kat a gift for helping him.  Kat recognizes that there is prejudice against the Chinese man, and does everything in her power to find clues to help clear him.

In a side story, there is a new housekeeper where Kat lives and works, and everyone hates her.  I loved how strong Kat is standing up to this arrogant and mean person; this was a nice added element to the story, especially with everyone below the stairs join hands against the housekeeper.

The mystery heats up, as another person related to the victim is murdered.  Kat discovers that Li Chang was looking for special tea plants from his homeland, and this was the reason for the deaths, as these plants were very valuable. What follows is an interesting and intriguing mystery, which had a number of suspects, and quite a few twists along the way.  It was a lot of fun to watch Kat and her friends (I loved Tess taking a more active part) play a big part in helping her solve the murders.  The slow built romance between Daniel and Kat took a back seat, but we will be seeing more of this in future books.

If you enjoy Victorian stories, with a mystery theme, a Downton Abbey background, two very good leading characters and very well written by Jennifer Ashley, I suggest you start this series.

The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver – a Review

The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / iTunes / Google Play / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
“You have been abandoned.”

A young woman has gone missing in Silicon Valley and her father has hired Colter Shaw to find her. The son of a survivalist family, Shaw is an expert tracker. Now he makes a living as a “reward seeker,” traveling the country to help police solve crimes and private citizens locate missing persons. But what seems a simple investigation quickly thrusts him into the dark heart of America’s tech hub and the cutthroat billion-dollar video-gaming industry.

“Escape if you can.”

When another victim is kidnapped, the clues point to one video game with a troubled past–The Whispering Man. In that game, the player has to survive after being abandoned in an inhospitable setting with five random objects. Is a madman bringing the game to life?

“Or die with dignity.”

Shaw finds himself caught in a cat-and-mouse game, risking his own life to save the victims even as he pursues the kidnapper across both Silicon Valley and the dark ‘net. Encountering eccentric game designers, trigger-happy gamers and ruthless tech titans, he soon learns that he isn’t the only one on the hunt: someone is on his trail and closing fast.

Review:

The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver is the 1st book in his new Colter Shaw series.  We meet our hero, Colter Shaw, who is investigating the disappearance of woman who is missing in Silicon Valley.  Colter is an expert tracker and investigator, who accepts cases for rewards; he is technically not a private investigator, but having grown up trained by his father to be a survivalist, he has become one of the best at helping solve cases, especially in dire situations.  What is nice about this book is that Deaver gives us glimpses into Colter’s life growing up, living with his highly intelligent mother and father, and how he became so good at what he does.

Colter is a different kind of hero, who is not only smart, tough, savvy, but he is also conscientious & caring about what cases to take and his determination to find the victim; as well as using his probability percentages to solve cases.

The Never Game revolves around the video gaming industry in Silicone Valley, and when Colter begins to delve deeper into the case, he realizes the culprit seems to be following steps played in an older game, The Whispering Man.  Early on he manages to find the victim barely alive, utilizing the first level of the game, The Abandoned Factory.  With the help of a female gamer, Colter initiates himself with the top management of various ruthless gaming leaders, designers, gamers, etc.   When another person is kidnapped, and clues arise that the culprit is now on the second level of the game, Colter will have his hands full trying to work with Joint Major Crimes Task Force in Santa Clara, CA.

To tell too much more would be spoilers. I will say that The Never Game was an exciting, non-stop intense, suspense thriller, with many twists and turns, especially in the last half of the book.  I look forward to reading more about Colter Shaw in future books, as he made a wonderful hero.  The Never Game was so very well written by Jeffery Deaver.

Cliff’s Edge by Meg Tilly – Review & Giveaway

Cliff’s Edge by Meg Tilly – Review & Giveaway

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / iTunes / Google Play / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Eve Harris is all set to house-sit and run the bakery she shares with her sister while Maggie goes on her honeymoon, but there’s one problem–the house is already occupied. By a movie star. He claims to be her brother-in-law’s friend, and not only does he insist on staying, he also offers to help. Playing house has never been so tempting…

Rhys Thomas is looking for a place to lie low after wrapping up his latest film, so when Luke offers up his house as a safe haven, Rhys sees the perfect opportunity for a little R & R. But rest is the last thing on his mind as he and Eve grow close.

But Eve and Rhys are not as alone as they think. And as danger trails Eve, it will take everything Rhys has to save the woman he loves.

Review:

Cliff’s Edge by Meg Tilly is the 2nd book in her Solace Island romance suspense series.  In the first book, we met Eve Harris, who is Maggie’s (first book heroine) sister, and knew this second book would be about her.    Eve is a painter by trade, but is just starting out trying to sell her pictures, and becomes co-owner of the new Intrepid café with Maggie.  Maggie is a great cook and baker, and Eve (who can’t cook) takes care of everything else.   When Maggie and her husband Luke (last book hero) leave for a two-week honeymoon, Eve is left finding a way to cook and keep things running smoothly at the café.   She also leaves her apartment, to stay at her sister’s house to house sit and take care of their dog.

Rhys Thomas, our hero, is a movie star who has just completed his work on a movie, and decides to take a vacation, and goes to stay for two weeks at his friend Luke’s house on Solace Island.  Of course, unbeknownst to him, someone else is there when he arrives, and he is accosted by Eve, thinking he is a burglar.  When they both realize that both Maggie and Luke accidently offered their home to them, they decide to co-exist in the house for the duration of the two weeks.   At first Eve, who finds Rhys hot, wants nothing to so with a movie star, who she feels is a womanizer and always traveling.  But she discovers he is a great cook, and pushes him to have fun at her café and help cook, which he does accept.

In a short time, neither of them cannot resist their combustible attraction to each other and a sizzling romance begins. I loved Eve and Rys together, as their chemistry was off the wall.   While they work at the café, enjoy each other’s company, a murderer has his eyes on Eve.  We do get a few POV’s on the killer’s mindset, and his determination to make Eve his next victim.  I will say that I thought early on, the murderer was someone we knew, but it turns out to be a surprise that was not anyone I would have guessed.  There were a few small incidents within the café or Eve’s apartment, that made Rhys bent on protecting Eve; especially after another murder of someone close to Eve.  As I noted earlier, the suspense was not the forefront of the story, but was very well done.

The romance between Rhys and Eve was sweet and fun, as we watched them both slowly falling deeper in love.  Their romance heats up, and  the danger escalates for Eve, as we race to an exciting and suspenseful climax.  I do not want to give spoilers, as you will need to read this book to discover who the culprit was.

Cliff’s Edge was a fun, enjoyable and captivating read, as well as having a wonderful couple, great secondary characters, with a sweet romance and mystery.  Meg Tilly once again gives us a excellent romance suspense to enjoy.  This reads very well as a standalone, but I suggest you start with the first book to enjoy Maggie and Luke’s story.  I wholly recommend you read the Solace Island series.

Shades of Justice by Carolyn Arnold – Review

Shades of Justice by Carolyn Arnold – Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository / iTunes / Google Play

Description:
Detective Madison Knight has risked her badge—and her life—in the pursuit of justice before, and she just might need to do so again. Two victims are found murdered and naked in the home of Steven Malone, who is the largest contributor to the Stiles PD. One victim is his wife. The other victim is a John Doe. This high-profile double homicide immediately pits Madison against her sergeant, who seems more intent on protecting the Malones’ reputation and retaining a benefactor than catching a killer.
Madison will need to pull on her tenacity and courage if she’s going to follow the evidence without prejudice. In the process, it becomes clear that finding justice isn’t always black and white, and often the shades in between tell the fullest story—and it’s not something she will forget anytime soon.

Shades of Justice is a murder mystery with twists and turns that will have readers flipping the pages until the wee hours of the morning. The ninth installment in an international bestselling series, it doesn’t matter if this is the first book you’re reading in the Detective Madison Knight series or not; all the books stand alone!

Review:

Shades of Justice by Carolyn Arnold is the 9th book in her terrific Detective Madison Knight series.  I have been a fan of this series since the beginning, and as always, Carolyn Arnold never fails to give us an intense exciting murder mystery, not to mention her expertise in police procedurals.  I have said this a number of times; when it comes to police investigations & procedurals no one does it better than Arnold.

Madison Knight, our heroine, is a tough detective, who will let nothing stand in her way to find the guilty. In Shades of Justice, Madison and her partner Terry are called to the scene of a double homicide at the house of the wealthy Malone family, who are also big supporters in Stiles and to the police department.  Lorene Malone, the family matriarch, is found murdered with a ‘John Doe’ at poolside.  When Madison tries to get information from family, she finds herself being stymied by her Sargent, who is determined to not ruffle feathers for the Malones.

Despite the Sargent’s constant interference, Madison works with her friends and team (Terry, Cynthia, Troy, etc), to work together to find the clues about the murder, which will have many twists and turns along the way.  There a quite a few suspects, which makes it very difficult to find clues, but never underestimate our intense and stubborn Madison Knight.

With being deeply immersed into solving this mystery, Madison is also involved in helping her friend Cynthia (medical examiner) prepare for her wedding, which is only a few days away.  I do enjoy Madison and Cynthia’s friendship, and the mishaps along the way that lightened things up.  I love that Madison was finally finding a true love in Troy, and hope this does become what our heroines needs..a perfect man in her life.  There is also another story line that seems to be leading more into future books; corrupt police officers and the threat that this will become a dangerous mission in her life. I will note two things I have mentioned before;  Madison’s partner, Terry still annoys me a lot, as I do not like him;  and the sargent was god awful.  With Madison so good at her job, I prefer that she had good people working with her.  But that is my sole opinion.

Rather than give spoilers, Shades of Justice was a great story, with lots of action, precise investigations, many suspects, blackmail, murder, revenge and a thrilling edge of your seat ride.  I could not put the book down; especially with new developments changing constantly.  This story was very exciting and well written.  If you enjoy mysteries, murder cops, police procedurals and a tough as nails cop, then you need to be reading this series.

Cat Chase the Moon by Shirley Rousseau Murphy

Cat Chase the Moon by Shirley Rousseau Murphy – Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / iTunes / Google Play / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Joe Grey and his partner, Dulcie, are frantic when Courtney, their pretty teen-kitten goes missing. Aided by their two- and four-legged friends, they hit the streets of Molina Point in search of their calico girl. Has Joe Grey and Dulcie’s only daughter been lured away by someone and stolen? Is she lying somewhere hurt, or worse?

Courtney has no idea that everyone is desperately looking for her. Locked in an upstairs apartment above the local antiques shop, she’s enjoying her first solo adventure. When she first met Ulrich Seaver, the shop’s owner, Courtney was frightened. But the human has coddled and pampered her, winning her trust. Sheltered by her parents, her brothers, and her kind human companions, the innocent Courtney is unaware of how deceptive strangers can be. She doesn’t know that Ulrich is hiding a dangerous secret that could threaten her and everyone in this charming California coastal village.

With his focus on finding Courtney, Joe Grey has neglected his detective work with the Molina Point Police Department. Before his daughter disappeared, Joe found a viciously beaten woman lying near the beach. Now the police investigation has stalled, and the clever feline worries his human colleagues may have missed a vital clue. Joe is also concerned about a family of newcomers whose domestic battles are disturbing the town’s tranquility. Loud and abrasive, the Luthers’ angry arguing, shouting, and swearing in the early hours of the night have neighbors on edge and the cops’ on alert. One of the couple’s late-night shouting matches masked the sounds of a burglary, and now a criminal is on the loose.

Though the crimes are as crisscrossed as the strands of a ball of yarn, Joe Grey’s cat senses tell him they may somehow be linked. It’s up to the fleet-footed feline and his crime-solving coterie to untangle the mysteries before it’s too late.

Review:

Cat Chase the Moon by Shirley Rousseau Murphy is the 21st book in her fun Joe Grey series.  I have read every book in this series, and it is one of my favorite go to books when I want a fun relaxing story to read.  Refresher:  Joe Grey series is always sweet lighthearted mysteries with a group of wonderful talking cats, and their humans.  These are magical sentient cats that live in Molena Point, California, but only their humans close to them know they can talk, and the cats are the real ones who solve the crimes.   I am still amazed that into the 21sth book, Murphy can still win us over each and every time.  I adore our cats, Joe, Dulcie, Kit, Pan & the kittens.  They are awesome, sweet, daring, and clever.  The humans who are a major part of this series, are Clyde and Ryan; Wilma, Charlie (who is married to the police chief, and he does not know about the cats).  They are all an awesome group that makes this series so much fun and exciting.

In Cat Chase the Moon there is another mystery starting with a women found badly beaten, which will lead to a family involved in stolen goods, as well as being very abrasive and loud.  The town of Molena Point does not take well to the Luthers, who also do not take good care of their young daughter,Mindy, who runs away to find her grandpa.  The police and Joe Grey keep a close eye on the Luthers, especially trying to discover about the stolen goods.

While this is going on, Courtney, Joe and Dulcie’s daughter suddenly goes missing.  This will bring everyone, cats and family humans desperately trying to find her.   When they finally find her locked up in a antique store and apartment,  Courtney wants to say to find out more information to help find why they kidnapped her, and what are their plans for her.  Currently they are treating her nice, but Joe and Dulcie worry.

What follows is an exciting mystery, trying to help the beaten woman hide from those who are trying to harm her from revealing information about them; as well as trying to get Courtney out of the house she is locked in.  The police bring the women to a hiding place to protect her, and in time when Courtney is rescued, she will be put there too.

There are trying times  for Joe and Dulcie, who know their sweet little girl is in danger, and perhaps moving on with her life away from them.  I loved how Charlie, Ryan, Wilma, Clyde all work closely with our wonderful smart talking cats, to solve the crimes.  Even 21 books later, the Molena Point police like the snitches who give them info, but they are still stumped who they are.  Of course, would they believe it is the cats that are snitches?  lol

Cat Chase Moon was a good exciting mystery with some very bad villains; who have to deal with Joe Grey on the job, and his little group of friends. This is a fun series, exciting mysteries, and fantastic characters, including cats and humans.  Do not let that fact that these cats can talk deter you into reading this series. It is a fun and awesome series, and so well written my Shirley Rousseau Murphy. Give yourself a chance to read this enjoyable series.

Smokies Special Agent by Lena Diaz – a Review

Smokies Special Agent by Lena Diaz – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / iTunes / Google Play / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
She was on a mission to fix the past

And he was determined to help her…

For ten years, Remi Jordan has been hunting her twin sister’s kidnapper. When baiting a killer backfires, the FBI agent’s career and freedom are suddenly on the line. Joining forces with Smoky Mountains investigator Duncan McKenzie ups the ante, unleashing treacherous desire. Now, with another woman missing, Remi’s fighting a lot more than the ghosts of the past. Is she also ready to fight for her future?

Review:

Do you lock up an FBI agent for committing a crime or is it intragency courtesy to look away, even if it flies against the face of everything you believe in? Special Agent Duncan McKenzie (Adam’s brother from Smoky Mountains Ranger, remember?!) is stuck between a rock and a hard place after arresting Special Agent Remi Jordan. She shot an unarmed man, what exactly was he supposed to do?! Having her in custody at least allows him to follow her train of thought: Someone was stalking her and she was super close to catching him! Now what? Work together, naturally.

Welcome to book 2 of Lena Diaz‘s Mighty McKenzies series, Smokies Special Agent. Duncan was a secondary character in the introductory novel, but he’s center stage now and thrust into a deadly case plaguing FBI Agent Remi for ten years.

At first, the profile Remi’s presented seems rather arbitrary: her working theory is based off a constellation that may plot the serial killer’s next victim. Feasible, but trust Lena Diaz at the helm, the storyline develops and takes root. Remi is nigh obsessed with tracking this particular monster after her twin sister mysteriously disappeared on their high school senior trip in the Smokies. She’s researched and tracked the victims, all but made herself bait to entice the killer! Recall her arrest, ;D — this was how they met! With Duncan as a fast ally, he’s got great instincts, Remi shares all her knowledge and they quickly collaborate; expand and hone their ideas, until a new pattern emerges.

“They had less than twenty-four hours to fit all the pieces together, to try to stop a killer from taking another victim.”

And just like that, you hit the ground running; fascinated and desperate to bring the criminal to justice.

Harlequin Intrigue delivers full stories in less than 300 pages. It is author Lena Diaz‘s deft hand that excels at driving the passion and intensity of great characters and this series is another feather in her cap. Remi was endowed with courage to pursue her sister’s killer and blessed with Duncan’s willingness to see it through. A Mighty McKenzie indeed.

Someone Knows by Lisa Scottoline – a Review

Someone Knows by Lisa Scottoline – a Review

Amazon / B&N / Kobo / iTunes / Google Play / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Twenty years ago, in an upscale suburb of Philadelphia, four teenagers spent a summer as closest friends: drinking, sharing secrets, testing boundaries. When a new boy looked to join them, they decided to pull a prank on him, convincing him to play Russian roulette as an initiation into their group. They secretly planned to leave the gun unloaded—but what happened next would change each of them forever.

Now three of the four reunite for the first time since that horrible summer. The guilt—and the lingering question about who loaded the gun—drove them apart. But after one of the group apparently commits suicide with a gun, their old secrets come roaring back. One of them is going to figure out if the new suicide is what it seems, and if it connects to the events of that long-ago summer. Someone knows exactly what happened—but who? And how far will they go to keep their secrets buried?

Review:

Someone Knows by Lisa Scottoline is a standalone mystery thriller.  I have read a number of books by Scottoline, and looked forward to reading this book. However, in Someone Knows I struggled reading the story, which I will explain further in the review.

The story revolves around 4 teenagers (15  years old), who truly are very different that you would not look at them as friends.  Allie, the main character in this story, lacks confidence and doesn’t have many friends, but she gets invited to hang around with a couple of the popular kids.  Sasha, is a spoiled girl, who wants everything her way.  Julian is comes from a rich family, and has a huge crush on Sasha.  David is Julian’s friend, but he worries secretly that he is gay.  None of these kids are really likeable (Allie a little), and they come from dysfunctional families.

While hanging around with the group, Julian finds a gun buried, and he and Sasha want to take turns playing with the gun.  Allie is against this, but does nothing about it.  In a short time, a new teenager attends the school and Sasha befriends him and invites him to hang with them.  What follows is Julian is jealous of Kyle (new boy) and suggests he has to do a Russian roulette as an initiation. Somehow a bullet was still in the gun, and the worst scenario happens, with Kyle getting killed.  All 4 run, and eventually separate, unable to face what happened.

The story then picks up 20 years later, when one of them commits suicide and Allie returns home unable to cope anymore about what happened in the past.  She wants to tell the truth.  This will put her life in danger.

Yes this was an interesting and intriguing concept of a story, but I had issues.  Especially in the first half of the book, which takes place in the past, there were way too many POV’s, which included the 5 teenagers, parents, etc; an overkill that had me starting to skip.

A key factor was that most of the characters in this book were  unlikeable;  which makes it harder to enjoy the story.  This also was not just about a horrible tragedy when they were young, but there was suicide, pedophilia, murder and dysfunctional families.  These things caused the book to be difficult to follow, especially with the numerous points of views; too many characters and issues that made it difficult to want to continue to read.  I do enjoy Lisa Scottline, but for me this book was not up to her normal great mysteries.

Enter rival bounty hunter John Carmondy: six feet of pure trouble, with a cocky grin to match. John’s the most cheerfully, annoyingly gorgeous frenemy Molly’s ever had the pleasure of defeating…and he may be her only hope of making it out of this mess alive

Review:

In Her Sights by Katie Ruggle is the 1st book in her new Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters series. I have read all of Katie Ruggle’s Rocky Mountain series.  I was looking forward to reading this new one, and I am  happy to say I enjoyed it.

Molly Pax, our heroine, lives at home with her sisters, who all work with her as bounty hunters in their bail recovery business.  Molly is the eldest sister, and the leader of the team, making ends meet, since their mother, who does nothing but make problems for the girls, and stealing their money or car.

Molly is on a case to find a person who has escaped bail, and runs into John Carmondy, a rival bounty hunter and our hero.  John seems to like Molly, and would like her to join his bail business, but Molly does everything to avoid him.  When she catches the person, and goes home to her sister with much needed money, things change.  When the mother becomes involved in a robbery, puts their home as collateral to get out of jail, and goes into hiding, and steals Molly’s car;  the sisters are desperate to find her before they lose everything.

What follows is an exciting and action packed adventure where Molly is forced to work with John, on a dangerous case to find an escaped murderer on bail.  It is a case no one wants, and the man is evil and extremely impossible to catch, killing anything in his way; but they are desperate for the money they will make if they bring back the culprit.  The sisters have to split themselves, with two sisters trying to find their mother (before they lose the house) and the other two working with Molly and John to find the bad guy.

I really liked the story line, and all the characters.  I felt until half way through the book, that Molly was a bit too rude to John, as he was always pleasant and willing to help the family.  During the last half she did change and began to fall for John, who already cared deeply for Molly, despite her behavior.   The romance between them was slow built, but in the end they made a great team and couple.

In Her Sights was a very good start to the Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunter series, and I look forward to future books that will revolve around the other sisters.  Katie Ruggle once again has captured my attention with an exciting new series.  This was a fun, exciting, action packed story, with some very good characters. I suggest you read In Her Sights.
