Wild Invitation by Nalini Singh consists of 4 novellas, which takes place in her wonderful  Psy/Changeling world. Below is my review on each novella.

Beat of Temptation

Beat of Temptation is the story of Tamsyn; healer of Dark River Leopards, and Nathan Ryder, a Dark River Sentinel.  This novel was a plethera of different nuances.  At times tender, at times romantic, at times frustrating, and more than a little intense with its emotion.

This story held a unique mood, in that our two main characters knew for several years that they were mates, and yet had not completed the bond.  First Tamsyn was much too young when Nathan knocked upon her door to wish her happy birthday on year, and felt the “pull”.  From then on, he was shadowed by the night the world turned upside down for all the Pack of Dark River.  The night when young Tamsyn beame healer.

Honorable to his core, and loving Tammy for as long as he could remember, Nate fights his inner beasts demands for its mate, struggling to give the woman who is his everything–some semblence of freedom.  Knowing his own level of dominance, and that once the bond was completed she would probably have no more.  Tamsyn on the other hand, wants no such freedom.  And faces her own struggle to make her man see that what she truly needs is Nate by her side, anchoring her with his love.

Can Nate realize the error of his misplaced honor before he loses her forever?

This short story is one of my personal favorites.  And seeing the soul deep connection of a young Lucas Hunter, with the members of his pack–long before he even became Alpha–was wonderful.

Stroke of Intimacy

The second addition to Nalini Singh’s novella is titled Stroke of Intimacy–and features a Human teacher named Annie, and a Dark River Leopard named Zach.

I was the least excited to read this segment, simply because I had only ever heard mention of this couple briefly.  Typically, its the characters I know well from previous installments that draw me into the story; more than ones I know little about.

However, I was pleasantly surprised by how thuroughly entertained I was by this unlikely courtship.  Zach is one of those rare male protaganists that are somehow equal parts dominant, and equal parts tender in the dealings with their woman.  I fell in love with this chraracter instantly…and enjoyed how quickly Zach charmed Annie’s Changeling prejudiced mother into liking him.

The heroine Annie has not had the best example of how a man who truly treasures his lady behaves.  Although cleary falling in love with Zach, she struggles with letting him in completely.

It was wonderful to witness Zach showing Annie what Changeling love looks like, and Annie learning how to trust.

Declaraton of Courtship

Declaration of Courtship, Nalini’s third segment of the Novella Wild Invitation, also offers a truly unique situation unto the Psy-Changelings world.  In this short story we see Grace; one of the most submissive wolves in the SnowDancer den pursued by a dark, lethally dominant Luietenant named Cooper.

These two changelings are literally on polar opposite sides of the heirarchy that exists in Snow Dancer.  So one can imagine the utter shock Grace receives when she hears the quietly spoken declaration of Cooper’s plan to “court” her.  There wasn’t a single thing I didn’t emphatically enjoy about this couple’s harrowing journey to come to terms with their differences, in order to achieve love.

Cooper’s single minded focus, and drive to win the woman who has captivated him.  The lengths with which he goes to show her that their love can overcome the vast gap seperating them in the heirachy.  The gentleness with which he calms her wolf out of it’s fear of his intense dominance.

I loved how shy, submissive Grace also fights with a strength of will at par with her mate, in order to discover–and heal–the pain Cooper hides from everyone.

This was a highly emotional, and fun filled story.  I applaud Ms. Singh’s ability to give her readers the feeling of a full length novel–with a beginning, middle, and end–in a little over 100 pages.

Texture of Intimacy

Last but SO not least; is Texture of Intimacy. This is a futhering of Walker Lauren and SnowDancer healer; Lara’s story. The book begins the day after Walker and Lara’s mating bond snaps into place. The timeline is set after the events in Kiss of Snow. It is only ten chapters long. And for one reason alone….I would have paid any price to read it. Walker Lauren.

First, I must convey that although Judd Lauren is my third utmost favorite male character in literature, I am head over heels in love with his brother. I have been fascinated with this stoic, silent, mysterious man since he first stepped onto the pages in Slave to Sensation. I can only state that there is no other character in literature quite like him. Not only is Walker THE most moving character of the Psy-Changelings series for me–hands down, but he is one of the most moving characters in all of fiction. Period. To put it into the simplest of terms….Walker breaks. My. Heart.

I lost count how many times I was moved to tears while learning about the horrors of this man’s past. A lone Psy professor helpless against a twisted society hell bent on turning children into weapons. Walker; issuing out detention under the watchful eye of the other adults…comforting the broken, batterted, sobbing children behind closed doors. Risking everything in order to give them what little rest, and reprieve he could offer. Walker; helpless as the innocence, laughter, and life was beaten from his own brother every day–until all that was left of the Judd he knew was a killing machine. Walker; witnessing the suffering of his sister, as she was forced to relinquish her child to a monster. Walker, powerless to stop his sister’s suicide. Walker, unable to save the niece he had always loved like a daughter. Walker; learning of the termination of his unborn child…silently dying inside, as the viscious cycle began with his other two children.

*rubbing the ache in my chest*

I am staggered with emotion for this character. Depsite the brutal attempt of his handler’s to drive the emotion out of him, Walker continued to feel. Walker continued to protect. Walker continued to act as an anchor for his brother, his niece, Marlee, Toby, and countless other children. I am awestruck by the size of this man’s heart, and the beauty of his soul. He never broke. Never wavered in his ability to supress the chaos going on inside him. Learning, and utilizing his vast telepathic gifts to appear wholly “silent” so that nothing outworldly shown. This survival mechanism was devloped out of desperation, knowing the moment the other Psy learned Walker was not like them, it was over. I liken this man’s strength of will to that of an immovable mountain, and I will FOREVER lament that this phenomenal, once in a lifetime character did not receive a full length novel.

The interactions between Walker and Lara, as they struggle to adjust to the demands of their bond–is heartbreakingly tender. But it was the emotionally poignant interactions between Walker, and Judd that just about did me in. Seperately these two characters could bring a reader to their knees with the pain they have suffered, but together in happy moments? Mr. Iceman Judd Lauren smiling? Laughing? Teasing and making jokes with the brother who never gave up on him? Stone faced Walker Lauren’s cheeks creasing??? GAWD. These moments with the Lauren brother’s were like a soothing balm applied on scorched skin for me.

Texture of Intimacy was a wonderful short story that offers readers previously unknown glimpses into the arrival of the Lauren’s at SnowDancer…and bears the answer to two very important questions. Can a man with the deeply ingrained instinct to close himself off in situations of extreme emotional duress–open himself up completely to the woman he loves? Can the woman with a Healer’s soul penetrate the barrier surrounding her mate’s heart, so that she may become HIS anchor?

I cannot get enough of the Psy-Changeling‘s world created by Nalini Singh, and Wild Invitation was a wonderful treat leading up to the release of the next installment Heart of Obsidian.

ARCHANGEL’S STORM (Guild Hunters #5) by Nalini Singh-a review

ARCHANGEL’S STORM (Guild Hunters #5) by Nalini Singh-a review

ARCHANGEL’S STORM (Guild Hunters #5) by Nalini Singh

ARCHANGEL’S STORM is the 5th full-length novel (September 4, 2012 release) in Nalini Singh’s Guild Hunters series. Some background information: Archangels sire vampires, who in turn manifest some of the inherent anomalies likened to their sires: Vampires are made when an Archangel chooses to save a human life or someone requests immortality, but a vampire can also sire one of their own kind. The struggle for power between the different Archangels as well as the hierarchy of vampire guardians and warriors often leads to death and destruction: The Cadre of 10 are the most powerful Archangels and the group of 7 (angels and vampires) answer to the Archangel Raphael.

Jason is one of the group of 7 and Raphael’s spymaster-the darkest of the angels, Jason is rarely seen, blends into the shadows and hides a painful secret about his past that no one knows. When the Archangel Neha’s consort is found murdered, Jason is sent to investigate the death, knowing that Neha’s history with her consort was as infamous as it was deadly. Neha demanded a blood oath and a promise, but Jason refused to tie himself to an Archangel who was once considered mad. His only recourse was to make a blood oath to Neha’s niece Mahiya-the daughter of the sister Neha was known to have murdered at the time of Mahiya’s birth.

Mahiya has known pain and suffering all of her adult life. With the knowledge that her mother was murdered, by her own sister for loving the same man, was made even more dangerous because of her blood connection to both. But Mahiya had an ulterior motive when she discovered that the spymaster was to be blood-bound to her and a motive that Jason would soon realize involved Mahiya’s request to escape the life she is living. But Jason and Mahiya’s search for the person responsible for the murder would lead then to an unlikely suspect and one that could force a war if Jason were to get involved. And the search for suspects would become more complicated as more vampires and angels would turn up dead and missing.

Nalini adds a secondary storyline that continues to grow on the previous relationship between Dimitri and his love Honor. Throughout the novel, we are witness to their wedding as well as Honor’s desire to join Dimitri as part of the family of vampires. Interspersed amongst the death and destruction of the primary story, Dimitri will bring forth a new vampire into the world of Angels and Vampires.

Jason’s has always believed that his early childhood experiences have left him cold and continuously on the edge of madness. He does not believe that he is capable of love or of being loved and in doing so refuses to make a commitment to the one woman who is slowly working her way into his heart. Although he is unable to openly express his feelings of love, in his own way, Jason will discover that Mahiya is the only woman, he will let into his heart and soul. Their similar pasts will show Jason that overcoming the pain will be easier when there is someone to love and show you the way. And protecting Mahiya from her own family will be paramount, when the woman who raised her has promised to make her pay for the fact that she was born. Vengeance and betrayal are bitter pills to swallow especially when family is involved.

ARCHANGEL’S STORM is a fantastic and captivating addition to the Guild Hunters series. Nalini writes a story full of sorrow, pain and passion that you hope that the HEA will be so welcome that you forget about everything that happened in the past-but-HEAs are found in fairy tales and fantasy, and at the end of Archangel’s Storm you know that their whole story has yet to be told.

An Interview with Nalini Singh

An Interview with Nalini Singh

The Reading Cafe is thrilled to have the fantastic Nalini Singh as our guest today. Nalini is one of our favorite authors, and we have given you a glimpse into her books all week. Yesterday was the release of her 11th book in Nalini’s Psy/Changeling series.

Let’s begin our interview with Nalini

Hi Nalini, Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

Nalini: Thank you for the invitation to be here.

TRC: Will you please tell us about yourself?

Nalini: I’m passionate about writing, adore traveling, and am seriously addicted to chocolate!

I was born on the small Pacific island of Fiji, grew up in New Zealand, and spent three years living and working in a lovely rural town in Japan famous for its tea fields.

TRC: When and how did you become interested in writing?  Have you always liked to write?

Nalini: The latter. I’ve always been a daydreamer, and somewhere along the way, I started writing down my stories.

TRC: Many writers discuss book ideas and information with a family member, a friend or another writer.  Who inspires you?  Do you have a muse?

Nalini: I actually prefer to work alone the majority of the time. As for inspiration – it’s everywhere. Something I see, hear, smell, touch or taste, the feel of a place, an article in the newspaper… anything could kick off an idea.

TRC: Would you tell us your steps to writing a novel?

Nalini: I usually have a story idea that excites me, and then I sit down and just go for it, do a first fast draft. That becomes the foundation for the final book. I do multiple complete drafts.

I like to say I write my way into the book.

TRC: When you started the Psy-Changeling Series, with Slave to Sensation, did you know at that point how far you wanted to go in this series?  Is there an end in sight?  Hopefully not. 🙂

Nalini: I’ve always had an end point in mind for the original story arc, because a strong story must have a satisfying conclusion. However, after we reach that point, there will still be plenty to explore in the world and its characters!

TRC: Tangle of Need was released yesterday, May 29th. Can you tell us a little about the book?

Nalini: Tangle of Need is an emotionally intense book about two people who aren’t looking for a relationship, least of all with one another. Their coming together is raw, sometimes painful, and deeply passionate.

The book also advances the overall storyline of the series on a number of fronts, including the Arrows and the Human Alliance.

TRC: How many books do you plan in the Guild Hunter series?

Nalini: The series is currently contracted up to book 8, so at least that many!

TRC: In September, your next Guild Hunter book, Archangel’s Storm will release.  What can you tell us about this book?

Nalini: This is the story of the enigmatic spymaster, Jason. He’s a man used to keeping secrets and one who doesn’t trust easily. In this book, you find out about the forces that shaped him, and along with his heroine, learn to see beyond the mask of the spymaster.

The first chapter is available here: www.nalinisingh.com/storm.php

TRC: I love that your female heroines are as equally strong as the men.  Is there anything that made you want to create the women in your stories so strong?

Nalini: For me, strong heroes need strong heroines. They play off one another, provide balance for each other, are able to be partners in the deepest sense.

However, strength is a multi-faceted thing

Indigo and Mercy from the Psy/Changeling series are physically strong, senior members of their packs, as lethally trained as any of the men, while Sascha is an empath, could never hurt anyone, yet her emotional courage in absorbing the agony of another so that person can find peace, is enormous.

And Honor in Archangel’s Blade, is broken at the beginning of the book, yet in spite of the horror she’s been through, she hasn’t lost her humanity, hasn’t become cold and cruel and without compassion. That displays an incredible strength of will – one that to her hero, makes her stronger than him.

All of these women are equally strong – they simply display their strength in different ways.

TRC: Who is your favorite male character in your books? / Who is your favorite female character in your books?

Nalini: Impossible to choose! I love them all!

TRC: We love your Friday Book Club on your blog.  I noticed you love the In-Death series, which is one of my all time favorite series…love Eve and Roarke. Please tell us about some of your other favorite books.

Nalini: I have so many favorites. As well as being a huge JD Robb fan, I also follow the Liaden books by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller, the Iron Seas series by Meljean Brook, and both of Patricia Briggs’ series.

Other favorites include books by Julie James, Maya Banks, Ilona Andrews, Jayne AnnKrentz…I could go on and on!

TRC: What are you currently working on? Any thoughts of a new series?

Nalini: I’m currently writing a Psy/Changeling novella featuring SnowDancer lieutenant, Cooper – it’s sexy and a lot of fun.

As for a new series – I have ideas that I work on in my spare time, but my focus is on the Guild Hunter and Psy/Changeling series at the moment.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Nalini: If your readers would like to find me online, here’s where they can spot me:
