Description:
I have my hands full taking care of my little sister and covering for my uncle as ranch foreman. The last thing I need is a Texas princess like Callie Llewellyn getting up in my business and messing with my head.

All I can think of is getting up close and personal with those curves of hers. And being on the edge of discovery makes our quick-and-dirty encounters twice as hot. And that’s all they are—quick and dirty—there’s nothing deeper going on here.

There’s only one rule to keeping my job and a roof over my sister’s head: stay away from the boss’s granddaughter. But I’m not always great at following the rules.

Review:

Branded begins with Callie finishing up at her Ivy League school for the summer, only to find out that her grades aren’t exactly what she thought they’d be.  Once Callie lands at her home, her grandparents’ sprawling Texas estate, she’s met at the air strip by a cowboy she’s not seen before.  Because, yeah…she would have remembered him.  What troubles her, though, is his almost dismissive reaction to her.  She finally makes it up to the house and is greeted by her grandmother, and soon, her grandfather.  She decides not to tell them of her slip in grades due to the fact she doesn’t want to disappoint them.  She’s always done well in school and vows to herself she’ll get back on top by taking online classes to make up the grade.

At dinner, Callie finds that not only is the hot new cowboy, Cole, there, but also his little sister for whom he is responsible.  Callie and Adina (the little sister) immediately strike up a friendship, much to Cole’s disapproval.  He knows Callie is off limits and, even though he is very protective of Adina, he eventually begins to lighten up when it comes to Callie and Adina.  Adina is several years younger than Callie, but Callie sees her as the younger sister she never had.  However, as Callie sets out to find out why Cole treats her the way he does, neither can be prepared for what transpires. As the two of them navigate trying to carry on a covert relationship, feelings overwhelm them both: fear, uncertainty, anger, and just maybe…love.

Branded is the first book I’ve read by Candace Havens. I liked the familial bonds as well as the already established friendships.  To be honest, I didn’t think I’d like it.  At all.  I have a hard time believing that a 19 year old young woman would say some of the things that came out of Callie’s mouth.  But then I had to remind myself that it’s not my place to say whether or not she would.  It’s the author’s responsibility to her characters to lay out their story.  And, I had to remind myself that this is new adult, which is kind of new(ish) territory for me.  Once I let go of my preconceived notions, a funny thing happened…….  I really like this story.  I liked the premise and I liked the main characters.  Yes, Callie is a rich girl, but she’s not petty and has a sweet heart and loves her family big.  Cole is a character whom I wanted to reach in and pop on the back of his head a time or tow, but he won me over in the end.  The secondary characters were intriguing and I would like to see if they’ll have their stories told. ( I can’t see where this is part of a series or not, so I will have to wait and see.)  This one did make me laugh in places.  I loved Callie and her best friend waking up after a bender.  It really was LOL funny in parts, but then the next sentence would bring tears to my eyes.  If you’re a fan of this genre, I think you’ll enjoy this one.  It’s a quick read that will have you cheering for all involved.

Blind Spot by Katana Collins – a Review

Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
I’m used to going for the easy things in life.
The easy A in school.
The easy lay in bed. The easy life my trust fund affords me.
Until I met Shelby.
Never in my life have I found retro T-shirts and lip balm so damn sexy.
She’s exactly what I never knew I wanted.
And she’s anything but easy.
But suddenly, easy is overrated.

Only one damn problem… For Shelby, hating me is easy.

For the first time in my life, I have to work for something. And though
she may not be easy…she’ll be worth it.

Review:

The Blind Spot by Katana Collins is a New Adult romance.  Shelby Stevens is a senior in college and for the first time in a long time things are changing for her. She is moving out of the dorms and being a resident advisor and into her own apartment.  At twenty one years old her entire life fit into only sixteen boxes. But she had saved for years working several jobs and was moving into a modern, upscale, safe apartment complex complete with a doorman.  With her friends (Reagan and Harrison) there to help, she embarks on moving day.  When she reaches her new apartment building she is greeted by the drop dead gorgeous doorman. After a brief exchange she realizes she may like this new place more than she anticipated.

Once moved in, her and her friends decide to order a pizza and study for French. But her upstairs, penthouse partying neighbor had other ideas.  After tolerating all she can, she decides to call the cops and head upstairs to confront her noisy neighbor. On the elevator ride upstairs she finds out her new neighbor’s name is Tate. And when she tells a white lie to get herself and friends into the party she can’t wait to find this “Tate” and give him a piece of her mind. But things don’t work out that way.

Upon meeting Tate she comes to find out that he isn’t actually the apartment building doorman but some spoiled rich kid out to have a good time. She can’t deny the fact that he is handsome beyond anything and when she finds out he is fluent in French – the one subject she is having some struggles in. She relents and accepts his offer to help her with her studies. But will she be able to control herself around him and deny what her heart wants? Will Tate be able to put his partying ways behind him and find happiness with Shelby?

Shelby is down to earth, with a very hard past to live down. She has been hurt and traumatized and simply afraid to open herself up to anyone. But she is strong. She will hold her own when all else fails.  She was wonderful to read and even better to watch evolve.

Tate Michaelson is a typical rich college student. Being the Governor’s son, he has had life handed to him. At first I thought I was going to completely dislike Tate but he was real and emotional and a true gentleman underneath the outward layers. I came to root for him and hope that Shelby would open up just enough to let him in.  As their story evolves you find that sometimes the rich kids have feelings too, and sometimes those running from love are looking for exactly that!

I am hoping this story continues – I would love for Harrison to have his own story! The possibilities of where this story can go are endless, and I look forward to following along.

Seared on My Soul by Cole Gibsen – a Review

Seared on My Soul by Cole Gibsen – a Review

Seared on My SoulAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM / The Book Depository

Description:
She’s so young, so full of life…

I couldn’t let her die…

Even if she made the world’s worst coffee.

Emily Garret never asked to be rescued, let alone by a walking JCrew ad whose idea of fun is probably managing his stock portfolio and watching the nightly news. Then again, she never thought she would wind upside-down in a ditch after a night having a little too much fun.

Reece Montgomery never planned on being anyone’s hero, especially the foul-mouthed, bleach-blonde barista from the local coffee shop. He thinks there’s more to Emily than her tattoos, and lip ring, but getting close means letting her into his past and meeting his ghosts.

And he’s not sure she’s ready for that battlefield.

Review:

It started off grim, dark even.  Two damaged souls who neglect the world and worse, themselves.  Fully immersed in self-destructiveness, Emily’s car crashes into a ditch and is on the verge of exploding when Reece hones his soldier instincts and extracts her from a worse fate.  Light pierced the sky that night, but the journey to happiness is a tumultuous one for Emily and Reece.  Even if there had been epiphany, Reece and Emily are too wounded, too dubious.  Unfortunately, the war lies within…the personal demons that stalk and torment. Cole Gibsen‘s writing is very appealing.  She pounds you with brutal grief and guilt, jolts and halts progress, and wraps you in euphoria.  I think those are apt depictions for Seared On My Soul.

Last night, when I saw the car was on fire, I sped toward it.
I had no idea who I’d find or what I was getting myself into.  Was I really concerned with saving a life-or on some level was I looking to end my own?

Reece battles agonizing pain, physically and mentally, on a daily basis since his army tour, but it’s not enough, not nearly enough, to make up for a personal failure.  The bullet that hangs over his heart serves as an anchor to misery.  Emily labels herself a loser.  She’s a little flighty, sure, but excessive drinking and poor judgment have created a shame spiral that she’s drowning in.

There’s no big mystery here, no one from the past who comes to steal their happiness.  Reece and Emily impede that road all on their own.  Their paths join, wariness a commonality between them, but it’s fear of being more when someone else can’t or when no one expects you to achieve.  They are in a wretched stasis of their own making because of all-consuming guilt.  The road to acceptance is not without push and pull, heartache, and turmoil.  We grieve with/for them and pray they’ll come to realize how resilient they are.  How courageous they’ve become.  How helping one another to cope is a gift in itself.

My teeny-tiny complaint I need to get out of my head?  I wish there had been an exchange between Emily and Reece (and her crummy barista skills) prior to their fateful encounter.  It felt like a missed opportunity for optimum connection, especially when Emily seemed “unaware” of Reece post-accident.  Amid the heavy issues and shortcomings, managing to traverse each others minefields is no minor success, the amount of irreverence and humor really stood out and finessed the story.  I was prepared for love to conquer Reece’s stoicism, but Emily teased and flirted and pushed Reece into corners to bring him to life.  These characters demonstrated heart and a vitality they once deemed too toxic.

There are conflicts to face and a resilience necessary to bear them.  Have Emily and Reece found peace?  Is love enough to sustain them or has one remained in the dark for too long?

•••••••••

REVIEW: HEAT IT UP is the first installment in Stina Lindenblatt’s new adult, contemporary OFF THE ICE romance series. This is former NHL player Kyle Bennett, and American exchange student Sofia Phillips’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Kyle and Sofia) HEAT IT UP follows the building relationship between Kyle and Sofia. Following a devastating accident that destroyed his hockey career, Kyle finds himself in Finland coaching young teens in a summer hockey program. Sofia, on the other hand, runs at the first sign of trouble and heads overseas to escape the mess that has become her life. Hoping to gain summer work experience in her mother’s home country of Finland as an athletic trainer, Sofia finds herself cleaning toilets and showers at the local arena. An accidental meeting with a naked Kyle Bennett, finds our heroine caught betweenlust, or looking at Kyle as a temporary arrangement. When a friends with benefits relationship turns into something more, Sofia knows that only heartache will come when one or both have to return to the USA.

HEAT IT UP is a new adult story line but the premise and many of the scenarios are nearing young adult (YA) territory including a love triangle wherein our heroine is playing both sides. Although Sofia professes to want only Kyle Bennett, she continues to accept invitations and a weekend away with a young man with whom her grandmother is trying to match up. Conflicting emotions and intentions are always fuel for misunderstanding and broken hearts. For those of you who follow my reviews, I am NOT a fan of the love triangle scenario especially one where promises have been made but actions say something else.

The relationship between Sofia and Kyle is one of immediate attraction but Sofia isn’t willing to risk more betrayal and refuses to accept Kyle into her life. Kyle, is a man, trying to escape the heartache of his past, and hopes for something more with Sofia Phillips. The $ex scenes are intimate without the use of graphic sexual language or imagery.

There are a number of secondary and supporting players including Kyle’s friend and fellow hockey player Nik. We are also introduced to a couple of Sofia’s girlfriends (Maija and Claire), and of course, the young man Joni who is desperately trying to get between Sofia and Kyle.

HEAT IT UP is a story of young love; a romance that may be threatened by secrets and lies; a relationship that struggles with insecurity and the threat of another potential suitor. There is a twist to the story line that reveals a close connection between our leading couple including a mutual home base of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The writing style is a bit sluggish at times as though we are being told a story and not invited into the action. I had a difficult time connecting with the characters or feeling any empathy for what was and what is going to be. Sofia’s lack of direction, and her inability to ‘just say no’ to her second suitor, lacked the maturity I want from my story book characters.

••••••••••••

REVIEW:  GIVE ME YOU is a contemporary, new adult, spin off from Caisey Quinn’s KEEP ME STILL series. This is soccer player Skylar Martin, and college student Corin Connelly’s story line. You do not have to have read the previous series to understand the current story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Corin and Skylar) GIVE ME YOU is an emotional and heartbreaking tale that covers several years (from first year of college to approximately eight years later) in the life of Corin Connelly and Skylar Martin. At eighteen years of age, with her past mired in abuse and neglect, New York native Corin Connelly heads to California and a chance at freedom without having to face the sins of her past. Meeting and falling in love with rich boy Skylar Martin was never on the agenda, especially when it meant getting her heart broken on more than one occasion. Skylar was a bit of a player, completely out of her league, but a man who worshipped Corin from both near and far. An offer to play professional soccer will send Skylar half way around the world leaving Corin heartbroken and wondering where everything went wrong.

GIVE ME YOU takes an intimate look at two people who could not have been more different. Corin’s life long struggle to make something of herself will be rewarded with years of hard work; Skylar Martin has had everything handed to him, a rich boy with even wealthier connections, but a young man who will succeed at the very thing he likes to do best. The relationship between our couple begins as friends to lovers-there is quite a bit of sexual innuendo, and back and forth between Skylar and Corin. The sexual chemistry is palpable-their relationship dynamic is familiar and passionate. The $ex scenes are intimate without the over the top graphic sexual text and imagery.

Layla and Landen from Quinn’s KEEP ME STILL series play secondary and supporting characters including several chapters wherein the author refreshes the readers about what happened in the early weeks of first year college.

GIVE ME YOU is a passionate story line. The premise is imaginative; the characters are inspiring, colorful and profound; the romance is both heartbreaking and fated. There are moments of drama and revelations; love and loss; looking back and going forward. Caisey Quinn continues to write with passion and sympathy.

“So Mortal Combat or that racing game you like?”
Skylar makes his pouty face at me. “What is it with you and Mortal Combat? You know the 90’s have passed, right?”
“It’s the only one I can beat you at,” I admit. “So it’s my favorite.”
“For now, right?”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
He sighs and hands me my controller. “Well, last week that fucking annoying ass Justin Bieber song was your favorite. Then yesterday you changed the channel when it came on—said you were sick of it. Not that I’m complaining.”
I open my mouth to argue but he rushes on.
“Those shoes, the red ones you bought when we went to the mall last week? You kicked them into the back of your closet after wearing them once.”
Geez. Why the sudden interest in my shoes?
“I’m sorry, Sky. Did you want to borrow them?” I smirk, but he levels me with a hard glare. I have no idea why he’s so uptight about footwear.
“You’re missing the point.”
“I didn’t realize there was one.” My mouth is suddenly dry. I thought we were going to hang out and play games like the other night. Clearly something is on his mind.
“You toss everything aside when it stops holding your interest, when the new wears off. You get bored easily.”
“And this is a problem because…”
He smiles, but it doesn’t feel real. “Ever had a bad break up, Corin? Ever been so upset that a relationship ended that you cried yourself to sleep?”
More like I cried because I was in a relationship. “God no. Every break up I ever had was like ‘good riddance.’ You know?”
He nods as if he does in fact know and I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but the arrogance dancing across his face pisses me off.
I narrow my eyes as he returns his attention to the animated players facing off on the screen. “You trying to say something? If you are, go ahead and say it.”
He’s judging me, I think. That really fucking sucks. He was the one person that I never felt like that with, the one that never seemed to judge me. Aside from Layla, and even I see how her eyes go wide sometimes when I say something she finds shocking or appalling. But never Skylar. And now he is.
“Skylar.” I put my controller down because like hell I am hanging out with him if he’s going to be a judgmental prick.
He turns to me with raised brows.
“So I like new stuff, so I don’t wear the same old stuff over and over. Maybe I had to do that my whole life and I hated it. So yeah, I work hard so I can buy red stilettos I’ll only wear once. I don’t need your fucking approval.” My voice breaks, damn him to hell.
I don’t know why his few words feel like needle sticks to my soul but they do. Shoving up off the floor, I snatch my black flats up and prepare to leave. Layla and Landen are in the dorm so I don’t know where I’ll go, but I’ll figure something out.
“Hey,” he says evenly, grabbing my wrist and pulling me down awkwardly into his lap. “Calm down.”
I swallow and resist the urge to bolt. Breathing heavily, I look into his eyes. “What’s with the psychoanalysis, Sky? I do something to make you mad?”
He shakes his head no. “No, babe. You didn’t. I didn’t mean to be an ass about it. I just thought I should warn you.”
I lean back a bit because sitting on top of him like this is doing things to me. I’m tingling everywhere our bodies are touching while he remains perfectly calm and collected. “Warn me about what?”
His lips curl slowly upward and he leans his forehead in until it rests on mine. “I see you, how you are. How things catch your eye briefly before you move on to the next shiny thing before you get too attached.” I wiggle in frustration, but his hands hold me to his lap. “It’s not going to be that easy with me. I just thought you should know.”
“I’ve never had trouble moving on…from anyone.” Not even my own mother, not that he needs to know about her.
“Because you never met anyone worth missing. Until now.”
I huff out a breath, because for some majorly messed up reason, I think he might be right. “Can we just play the damn game, Skylar?” I gesture to the television and he nods.
His lips flatten a bit before he smirks again. “Sure, sweetheart. We can play the game. If that’s what you want.”
Something tells me we aren’t talking about Mortal Combat anymore. My heart is pounding as I slide off of his lap over into my spot. I wipe my sweat slick palms on my jeans and face the screen. Why am I so worked up over this weird ass conversation?
Because you never met anyone worth missing.
Until now.

Ethan Davenport is already Boston’s most eligible bachelor. In his second season with the Boston Renegades he has set his eyes on the girl behind the visitors’ dugout.

That girl is Daisy Robinson, a journalism student at the University of Boston and a die-hard Renegades fan.

But with new found love comes challenges and Ethan and Daisy have to deal with his crazy schedule, school finals and his presence on her campus for some much needed media training.

For Ethan nothing can come between him and Daisy, until a secret that she’s been keeping threatens to destroy them both.

•••••••••

REVIEW: THIRD BASE is the first installment in Heidi McLaughlin’s new adult, contemporary THE BOYS OF SUMMER baseball romance series focusing on the members of the professional baseball team the Boston Renegades. This is third baseman Ethan Davenport, and journalism student Daisy Robinson’s story line.

Told from first person point of view (Ethan) THIRD BASE follows Boston Renegades third baseman twenty two year old Ethan Davenport through his second season in the major leagues. At each home game, Ethan is enamored by one fan-a young woman behind the visitor’s dugout at each home game- and the woman who calls to Ethan’s heart. Enter twenty year old Daisy Robinson, a journalism student with season tickets to the Boston Renegades, and a woman with a secret that she holds close to her heart.

The relationship between Daisy and Ethan begins slowly as Daisy tries to keep Ethan at a distance. She is young woman who is struggling to make ends meet, while looking after he ailing grandfather and attending university every day. Daisy has a secret that if revealed, may mean the end of her relationship with Ethan Davenport. The $ex scenes are intimate without the over the top graphic sexual imagery but I will add that I did not ‘feel’ the emotional connection between the leading couple-the spark was missing from their relationship.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Daisy’s grandfather-a diehard Renegades fan, and a man who is struggling with his personal freedom. We are introduced to a number of the Boston Renegades players, coaches and managers, as well as Ethan’s parents, sister, and his niece Shea. Ethan’s ex girlfriend continues to play a role in our hero’s life that may be questionable to many readers. These are the twists that should have lead to some anxious moments but were brushed aside without much fanfare.

The world building follows the Boston Renegades on the road, at home, and in the locker room. Boys will be boys, as the saying goes, and nothing is off limits when the players begin to ‘play’.

THIRD BASE is an entertaining story where the heroine keeps secret another part of her life- a part that I guessed immediately therefore there was no surprise for me when revealed. The premise is enjoyable; the characters are animated; the romance is passionate and heartbreaking-you know there will be fallout when the truth is revealed.

Third Base teaser

excerpt

I look at the scoreboard from the on-deck circle. It’s the bottom of the ninth with two outs. Unless we go on some miraculous run, the game is over and we’ve lost, giving us our second loss in a row.
The Orioles coach calls for a time-out and approaches the mound. This gives Meyers, our right fielder, the opportunity for us to talk. Actually, it gives me the ability to stare at the girl that has held my attention all night. After my home run, I thought I could focus on the game, but each time I came up to bat or went out to the field, I was looking to see if she was staring… and she was, which really stroked my ego.
I meet Meyers halfway between the on-deck circle and home plate. Usually, we’d stand back or talk to the third base coach, but there’s no coming back from this defeat. When I reach him, I can tell he’s frustrated; we all are. We’re a far better team than what our record shows. Even though it’s still very early, our expectations are much higher, and with the road trip coming up, we have got to get out of this funk, fast… before it’s too late.
“This ump is calling shit.” Meyers kicks the dirt around his feet.
“Has been all night.” On any given night it’s either in your favor or not. Some umpires come into a game with a chip on their shoulder. They remember everything, and they don’t let you forget it. They say once the game is over, it’s over. Umpires don’t feel that way.
“Play ball!” the umpire yells.
Meyers goes back to home plate and settles in for what could be his last pitch. If he gets on base, I’m up. If he strikes out, my night is over. I rest my bat on my shoulder and watch – not Meyers, but the girl in the hat. She’s leaning forward, resting her elbows on the dugout. I had every intention of finding an usher during the seventh inning but lost my nerve. I don’t know how that’d be received if our manager was to find out, and short of going into the stands the second the game is over, I’m running out of options.
It’s a swing and foul ball for Meyers, still giving me hope. The girl hasn’t moved, and something tells me that she’s focused on me. I should be focused on the game, but I’m not.
I lean over to the usher who stands by the field and whisper, “There’s a girl in section sixty-five, row c, seat one. I’d like to talk to her after the game.”
He nods and says something into his really cool CIA walkie-talkie-type thing. When I first arrived, I asked if I could play with it. I was told no. It was a total buzz kill. I asked my agent to get me one, and he told me to grow up… not one of my finer moments.
Meyers goes down swinging and just like that, the game’s over. We lost three to eight. I wait for him to walk by before returning to the dugout, but not without one last look at the girl in row c. Another usher is walking down the aisle toward her. I climb down the stairs and pause where she can’t see me. The usher approaches her and talks wildly with his hands. She looks around, reaches for her bag, and follows him up the steps. I can only hope she’ll be in the lounge when I get there.
Right now I’m thankful I’m not allowed to give interviews yet because it means I can shower and get upstairs quicker. The reporters call my name, asking about my home-run. They know I’m not allowed to speak with them, but they try anyway. I keep my head down, my classic move after we’ve lost, and rush into the clubhouse. There will be no after-game meeting; our manager will save that for tomorrow.
I shower quickly and slip into jeans and a t-shirt. My hair is still wet and dripping down onto my shirt, but I don’t want my third base girl waiting too long. I take the back stairs two at a time and enter the lounge. This is where the wives and girlfriends hang out, and now that I think about it, it’s probably not the best place to have sent her. It’s like vulture prey in here for new girlfriends… not that she’s my girlfriend. I just want to know her name.
As soon as I enter the hallway, I find her sitting outside the door. She stands up when she hears me coming and keeps her hands behind her back, watching me closely. I come to a halt in front of her, and all I can see is the top of her hat. She’s about a foot shorter than me, and I like that.
“I wanted to apologize for giving you the ball.” I keep my hands clasped to avoid the nervous twitch I have. The last thing I want to do is scare her away.
“Oh… do you want it back?” Her voice is soft, sweet, and completely Boston. Hearing her speak makes me feel like I have something to look forward to, like I’m home.
“What? No, I thought I embarrassed you… It’s just…”
My knees go weak when she looks at me. Her light green eyes are the color of sea glass, and she has a dimple that compliments her smile. I find myself wanting to rub my thumb over it so I can feel it.
“You didn’t embarrass me. It was nice.”
“What’s your name?” I ask, needing to know because calling her ‘third base girl’ or ‘girl in row c’ isn’t going to cut it.
“Daisy.”
Daisy, I repeat in my head so I don’t forget. Daisy… like the flowers that my mother loves.
“I’m Ethan,” I stupidly tell her but feel like I should introduce myself. “Wanna get out of here and grab some dinner?”
She eyes me and then the ground, making me wait what feels like an eternity for her answer.

Hadley saved my life . . . and I ruined hers

Hadley’s my best friend. We share a house, our friends, a life. She knows all my secrets . . . except one. My desperate need for her is inked on my body, it’s the best I can do. But Hadley needs to hear the words . . .

Growing up as foster kids, Hadley made me feel whole-sane. And what did I do? I destroyed our chance to be together. I ran out on Hadley when I should have stayed, and something broke between us. Now I’ll do anything to fix it.

I’ll never leave her again. I won’t ever let her feel afraid again. But the more I try to protect her from my pain, the more I just make things worse. I’m terrified that if I tell her everything, she’ll never forgive me. I’m even more terrified that it may be too late to make her mine. I have to try to give her what she needs . . . it’s a debt I’m determined to repay.

REVIEW: THE DEBT is a stand alone, friends to lovers, new adult, romance story line by first time author Tyler King. This is music prodigy Josh MacKay, and artist Hadley Mitchell’s story of dark demons, broken childhoods, and never quite letting go of the past.

Told from first person point of view (Josh MacKay) using flashbacks, memories, self-examination and present day, THE DEBT looks at two lost souls whose earlier years were fraught with abuse, neglect, loss, and the foster care system that failed two children and destroyed their lives. Josh is a music prodigy but events from his past have caused Josh to turn in another direction finding solace in his friendship and love with Hadley Mitchell-who at five years of age-saved Josh when no one else cared enough to listen.

THE DEBT follows the bruised and battered relationship between Josh and Hadley-a relationship founded on a kindred friendship brought about by circumstance and loss. At times, both Josh and Hadley’s issues engulfed the story in anxiety and stress. Help was but a phone call away but these two were reluctant to reveal their darkest secrets and lies.

We are introduced to Josh’s ‘Mad Electro’ band mates-Corey, Trey, and Scott. While Josh and Hadley’s home life continues to fail, Mad Electro find themselves falling apart. Dr. Simon MacKay, Josh’s adoptive father, is a strong presence in the life of our leading couple. Andre’s friendship with Hadley begins to build a wall between Hadley and Josh.

THE DEBT is a story line that looks at a number of emotional and psychological disorders caused by abuse, neglect and PTSD. There are moments of anguish, torment, anger and heartbreak. The story line elements may be triggers for some readers so be warned if you are sensitive to the subject matter.

As mentioned earlier, THE DEBT follows several different time lines, flashing back and forth between the present and the past but all from our hero’s point of view. As Josh MacKay recounts his life and reveals the demons, life throws another curve ball into our hero’s life. The premise is tragic and heartbreaking, impassioned and encouraging. The characters are intense and passionate; the romance is intimate, revealing and hopeful.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 3, 2016

Darkly sexy, emotional and forbidden, a woman unwittingly falls in love with the son of her abductor. The conclusion of a two-book contemporary romance series by New York Times bestselling author Monica Murphy.

Lies hurt. Lies destroy. I tried my best to understand why Ethan kept his secrets but it was so hard. Until I realized that I couldn’t deny myself any longer — I needed to be with him. We needed each other. Despite my family’s wariness, the media’s fascination with us, the fact that his father still has a stranglehold on our lives, we belong together. No matter what. I will never let Ethan go. But sometimes love destroys us too, and we’re too weak to banish the demons. Especially when our demons are determined to ruin us.

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: NEVER LET YOU GO is the second installment in Monica Murphy’s NEVER TEAR US APART contemporary, new adult duology focusing on Katie Watts, and Will ‘Ethan’ Monroe. NEVER LET YOU GO should not be read as a stand alone as it continues upon the events of book one-Never Tear Us Apart.

SOME BACKGROUND: Eight years earlier, at twelve years old, Katie Watts was kidnapped, raped and held prisoner by a serial murderer, only to be rescued by her attacker’s fifteen year old son. Fast forward to present day, where Katie and Will are reunited and must, once again, fight to escape the monsters –but this time it is the media, Katie’s family, and a reporter who is desperate for their story.

Told from several first person points of view (Will, Katie, Aaron), and a lone third person (Lisa), NEVER LET YOU GO focuses on the struggling relationship between Katie and Will. Will has been in love with Katie since the day of her rescue, but both are battling demons from the past. As the story line unfolds, a reporter continues to stalk our couple in the hopes of an exclusive interview, while someone else behind the scenes is pulling the strings. We are witness to the guilt, the memories, and the unforgettable circumstances of how they met and came to be. The roller coaster ride of the relationship is kept hidden until the media becomes aware of their present circumstances. There are monsters in the dark, and some of them are real.

NEVER LET YOU GO follows Katie’s family – they have never been able to come to terms with what happened to Katie, and the affects of the attention has had upon their lives. Katie feels victimized once again by Will’s lies and omissions of the truth; his betrayal to the now twenty year old Katie finds our heroine struggling with her emotions and her heart. Will Monroe eventually separated himself from the man he called dad, and became a man who existed without the woman he once loved. His eight year search for Katie finds Will caught between the lies, and wanting to give Katie his heart.

NEVER LET YOU GO begins with a note from the author regarding the subject matter but in all fairness, the details about the rape are absent, behind the scenes, and referenced where necessary. At no point does the author step into graphic text or haunting scenarios. Some readers may have issues with the story line subject. The premise is thrilling and tense; the characters are determined, engaging and somewhat tragic; the romance is fated and heartwarming.
