About the book: Release Date November 7, 2016

Kade Wright is an expert in rocking any woman’s world.

Sexy, rich, and the type you don’t bring home to meet your mother, he has broken more hearts than he can remember, and there is no end in sight. Until one mistake lands him in boiling hot waters. When his company orders him to the LOVE ADDICTS ANONYMOUS Rehab Center, he better get his affairs in order or else he loses his seat on the company board.

Love isn’t supposed to be addictive. But for Vicky Sullivan it is.

A true romantic at heart, she comes with a bit of a stalking tendency, and is completely not adverse to commitment. But who’s Kade to judge? As someone who’s seeking commitment and afraid of never finding love, she’s the type of woman he wouldn’t usually hit on. Except, she’s hot and keeps avoiding him…yes, even after seeing his private parts naked in all their glory.

Kade isn’t known as the tall, dark and ruthless businessman for no reason. Romance isn’t in the air, more like wild between the sheets action with no expectations. Vicky’s convinced she can resist, but Kade has other plans for her.

Can Vicky stay away from the one man who seems so easy to get and so hard to keep?

REVIEW: LOVE ADDICTS ANONYMOUS Part 1 by JC Reed and Jackie Steele focuses on a six week stint at a rehab center for ‘love addict’ Vicky Sullivan, and ‘sex addict’ Kade Wright.

Told from dual first person points of view (Vicky and Kade) LOVE ADDICTS ANONYMOUS part one focuses on the introduction of our leading couple, and the center’s questionable and controversial mode of therapy pairing sex addicts with love addicts in adjoining suites. What ensues is the back and forth banter between Vicky and Kade, and the possibility that this form of therapy may not be what the doctor has ordered.

Throughout the story line we get up close and personal in the mind of our leading couple-their reasoning, excuses, and thoughts of denial in their attempts to justify their previous actions. Vicky is a woman obsessed with her ex-boyfriend; and Kade is a man determined to complete a year long challenge of a different woman every day. The maturity of both characters is in question; their lack of personal culpability is frightening. There are no $ex scenes or romantic interludes –only reflections of past indiscretions.

LOVE ADDICTS ANONYMOUS part one is a revealing and lively look at two people whose ‘addictions’ pull one another together for a potential explosive union.

excerpt

“Changed your mind after all?” The voice is deep and husky. For a moment, I’m immobilized as he continues, “I think bedrooms are a bit overrated, but what the hell? If that’s your thing, I’m up for it.”
It’s the same guy.
I turn to face him, my gaze strangely drawn south, and find that a thin towel is wrapped around his hips, covering his junk.
I let out an exasperated snort.
It’s really tiny. The towel, that is.
Not his tool.
That one’s about the biggest I’ve ever seen, counting TV and Internet pop-ups.
I don’t want to gawk, and yet I find my gaze glued to the clearly defined bulge beneath that towel.
In the bright light spilling in through the large bay windows, I can see everything. There’s no denying he still has a raging erection, as though pleasuring himself wasn’t nearly enough to still his sexual appetite.
“Seriously?” I ask, pointing to the towel. “Can’t you put something on?” My voice sounds strangled, breathy, which I attribute to the fact that I’m highly uncomfortable standing in front of a hot guy built like a Greek god and hung like a donkey.
“What’s so important that you had to interrupt?”
“I interrupted?” My jaw drops, and white hot flashes of anger begin to cloud my vision. “Oh, you’re talking about your date with your right hand. Sorry about that.” I smirk. “What are you doing here?”
His brows shoot up. “Here?”
“Yes, here in my apartment.”
Ignoring my question, he squeezes past me, his erection coming dangerously close to my abdomen. From up close, he smells of sandalwood and raw manliness.
My breath catches in my throat.
It takes all my willpower not to jump a few steps back to put some distance between us.
He retrieves another white towel from his suitcase and wipes his face with it.
Every fiber of my body is heating up at the sight of his naked back. Bruce is tall and a bit skinny. This guy is built like a boxer: tall with broad shoulders and hard muscles in places I didn’t know existed.
As he turns to regard me, I notice the color of his eyes.
Deep brown and broody with long, dark lashes.
They’re the sort of eyes that make you feel like you’re the only woman in his world.

excerpt

She blew out her held breath, pushed her plate away, and offered him a smile. “Thanks for the meal. I will repay you. I need to get her to bed. What time would you like me to be here tomorrow?”

She scooted out of the booth, but his hand caught her arm before she could turn to pick up Lacey. Blood whooshed in her ears, and breathing became impossible as panic clawed its way through her chest. Tony’s face lodged itself in her mind. Eyes narrowed and staring her down. The way he looked right before his fist came down on her …

He’s not Tony. He’s not Tony. She repeated the long-held mantra over and over and drew slow, deep breaths in an effort to put a lid back on the panic. Still the room around her spun as the past closed in on her.

“The meal’s on me, remember? You can pay me back by letting me help you.”

Nic’s voice jerked her back to the present. She lifted her head to find him watching her, gentle concern in his searching eyes. Was he really this nice? Or was this just a ruse, the way it had been for Tony? She didn’t know, but she had no desire to find out. She didn’t need his help. She just needed a job.

She glared at Nic. “What is it with you? Do you have a thing for taking in strays or something, Mr. Rossi?”

“My name is Nic, and yes, actually I do. My nonna used to roll her eyes every time I brought home a stray cat or dog.” Amusement laced his tone, his eyes crinkling at the corners.

God, did nothing faze the man?

His expression sobered. “Let me help. Because I can.”

She blew out a defeated breath. “Why do you even care?”

“Why do I scare you so much?”

Touché.

Nic released her arm and folded his hands on the table instead. “You want the God’s honest truth? That’s why I give a damn. Because I terrify the both of you, and I hate it. Every time I look at your daughter, I see my own.”

She wrapped her arms around herself. The man left her feeling open and exposed. He offered her something she didn’t know if she could ever repay: human decency. “I can’t ask you to do that for me.”

“Then do it for her.” He nodded in Lacey’s direction.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 11, 2016

I’m a doctor. Mobster. Killer.
My hands are covered in filth. I don’t have the right to touch anything as clean and pure as Ellison MacAllister.

I distance myself … always remaining obscure, composed, restrained.
Careful to never allow my eyes to linger too long.
Careful to hide my interest.
Careful to keep my burning desire buried beneath the surface.

I do it for her–suffer in silence–because it’s what is best for the woman I love.
And she has no idea.

She’ll be initiated as a Fellowship member soon. One of my mafia brothers will go through endurance so he’ll earn the right to claim her. Make her his wife. Kill. Me. Slowly.

I’m running out of time. Only a month remains before she’s beyond my reach forever. I want to taste her. Share sleepless nights. Ride out her storm.
I want to give her the kind of nights she will still feel between her legs the next morning. I want us to share the kind of passion that forms on our skin and drips down to saturate the sheets. Between the sweat and the moans and the messy hair, I want her to know how hard she’s been loved.

To have her is to taint her. I should stay away. But I won’t. I can’t. I’m a selfish bastard. A selfish bastard in love.

***Intended for readers ages 18+ due to sexual content, adult situations, and language.

••••••••••••

REVIEW: ENDURANCE is the fourth installment in Georgia Cates’ contemporary, adult THE SIN TRILOGY focusing on the men and women of the Scottish Mafia known as the Fellowship. This is American nurse Ellison MacAllister, and physician Jamie Breckenridge’s story line. Jamie is the cousin of Sinclair Breckenridge (heir to the Scottish Fellowship crime syndicate), and Ellison is the sister of Sinclair’s wife Bleu, both of whom were the focus of the original Sin Trilogy. ENDURANCE is a standalone story line in Georgia’s THE SIN TRILOGY SERIES but I recommend reading the original trilogy for backstory, cohesion, and an understanding of the world of the Fellowship.

Told from dual first person points of view (Jamie and Ellison) ENDURANCE follows the building relationship between Jamie Breckenridge and Ellison MacAllister. Jamie is a high ranking member of the Scottish Fellowship crime syndicate but has chosen a different path than that of his Fellowship brothers. He is their much needed doctor, and a man who is just as capable of killing the same as his brothers. Ellison came to Scotland to be close to her sister, who married into the Fellowship ranks, but has found herself falling in love with a man who is unable to claim the woman he loves. To enter into a relationship with a member of the Fellowship, a woman must be claimed, and her mate must suffer the ‘Endurance’ to prove both are worthy. What ensues are Jamie’s attempts to keep Ellison close by his side while ensuring no other member of the Fellowship lays claim to the woman he loves, and The Fellowship’s preparations for a war against a rival syndicate known as The Order.

ENDURANCE is a story of family, honor and love. Jamie was groomed to be a leader but has chosen to be a healer within the ranks of the Fellowship. A disappointment to both his father and mother, Jamie believes the path he has chosen is honorable and worthy. His attraction to Ellison is complicated by the fact that Jamie is unwilling to claim the woman with whom he has fallen in love in order to protect her from the life he has chosen. Working together as the Fellowship’s medical team is one way to keep Ellison by his side.

The relationship between Ellison and Jamie is one of immediate attraction-a friends to lovers story line of forbidden love for a man whose need to protect is paramount. Ellison has lusted and loved Jamie from afar, and refuses to accept that Jamie is willing to watch her be claimed by another man. Throughout the story we watch as Jamie denies his love for Ellison forcing a potential claiming by a Fellowship brother or a member of a rival syndicate. The $ex scenes are erotic and intense.

There is a large ensemble of secondary and supporting characters including Sin and Bleu from the original Sin Series Trilogy, as well as Jamie’s sister Westlyn who will sacrifice herself to save the woman that Jamie loves. Kieran and Westlyn’s story is next.

The world building continues to focus on the Scottish crime syndicates, and the laws that govern their survival and existence. The ‘Endurance’ is a time honored, brutal tradition with the Fellowship when a man lays claim to the woman he loves.

ENDURANCE is a passionate and electric story. The premise is energetic; the characters are animated and courageous; the romance is provocative and fated.

“I don’t mind your stuff being all over our bedroom. And our bathroom. And the hallway leading from the staircase.” Trust me. Her shite is every-fucking-where. “I knew what I was getting into when I asked a high-maintenance lass like yourself to move in with me.”
Ellison giggles. “You did not. You knew zero about what it would be like living with me. And I can guarantee that whatever you’re thinking you’ve gotten yourself into with me ain’t even close to the reality of it.”
“Then why don’t you tell me?”
“I was thinking I would show you.” She grins and I’ve come to know in a short while that it’s a sure sign of mischief. “That is if you think you can handle it.”
“I promise I won’t be the one who can’t handle it.” I already know what kind of lover she likes and wants.
And I very much want to be the alpha she wants.
I pick Ellison up and throw her over my shoulder to carry her to the bed. Well, to the mattress on the floor.
I was planning to wait until bedtime to fuck her—after the work was done and everything was in place—but she’s made it impossible for me to wait another minute.
I toss her on the mattress and stand over her while I pull my T-shirt over my head and start working to get my jeans off. “I’m done waiting to have you.”
She smiles as her eyes survey my body. “I’ve been wondering what you look like underneath your shirt.”
“And?”
“I approve one hundred percent.”
“Take off your clothes, Mac. I want to watch you get naked.” My voice is stern. I’ll be the one in control. The one taking what I want. The one who’ll be completely unapologetic. Exactly what she said she wanted.
It’s November, that time of year where Scotland experiences more darkness than light. The sun is long gone, so the room is illuminated only by the soft lamp on the bedside table. It’s actually sort of perfect.
Ellison sits up and pulls her shirt over her head. Black and hot-pink lace covers what I already know is a beautiful pair of tits that fit my hands perfectly. And I can’t wait to get my hands on them again.
Her lovely breasts tumble out of her bra and she tosses it on the mattress before pushing her thumbs into the waistband of her yoga pants to drag them down her legs. A tiny black and hot-pink lace triangle barely covers the mound between her thighs.
She’s completely naked when she falls backward on the mattress, her feet apart and knees pressed together. Waiting. “No, Mac. You don’t get to close your legs on me. I want to see you. All. Of. You.” I put my palms together and then pull them apart to widen the space between my hands. “Spread them.”
She bites her bottom lip—an attempt to mask her grin—as her knees slowly fall apart. “Is this what you want to look at?”
My underwear is tight. My cock is straining hard against the fabric so I push them down and out of the way. “I think this is a sure sign I want to do more than look at it.”
Ellison grins. “Mmm. Someone’s eager.”
“You have no idea.”
I go to my knees and crawl over Ellison. “I’ve imagined us like this no less than a million times. I’ve seen it happen in my head over and over.”
Ellison brings my hand to her mouth to kiss my palm. “I’ve imagined us together too. I can’t tell you how many times.”
My mouth connects with hers and she opens wide to invite my tongue inside to play. Silky. Slippery. Seductive. I like this game very much.
A little taunting. A little tickling. A lot of teasing. This woman knows how a man likes to be kissed.
I drag my mouth away from her lips and kiss that spot below her ear before moving down the side of her neck. My hands similarly mimic the downward motion beginning at her ribcage and moving lower on her sides, waist, and hips.
She pushes her fingers into the top of my hair and arches her back when I move lower to suck her nipple into my mouth. A soft gasp/moan expels from her chest when my tongue licks the erect point.
I know she’s going to squirm so I grasp her bum hard and hold her in place as I move lower to kiss the top of her pubic bone. “Doc, this teasing . . . it’s torture.”
“Do you want my mouth on you?”
She lifts her hips and squirms. “Yesss. So badly.”
She jolts when my tongue darts out and licks the top of her slit. “Ohhh.”
I tickle her clit with my tongue and then lick once. Twice. Three times. “I love the way you taste. And smell.”
She rocks her hips in a back and forth motion against my mouth. Her body shudders and a moan is released when my tongue works her in a circular motion. “More?”
“Please. Feels so good.”
Pleasing Ellison. Hearing her moans. Licking her until she comes. I’m going to enjoy this.

About the book: Release Date October 21, 2016

A chilling psychological thriller about a woman caught between two men…

Mari Gill wakes to horror in a strange apartment next to a murdered man, and can’t remember the night before. Accused of murder, she feels torn between her husband, a successful defense attorney, and a mysterious, kind man who wants to help. Can she trust either of them – or even her friends? Detective Kerri Blasco battles her police bosses believing Mari is innocent…but is she?

Review:
As the blurb says, Mari Gill wakes up in a strange bed next to a murdered man who is a complete stranger. She sees a knife that has been plunged into his chest and screams bloody murder (literally) as she stumbles out of the bed and attempts to run for her life. She slips and falls into broken glass cutting her hands terribly and promptly has a life threatening asthma attack. Not knowing where her purse is, she has no hope of finding her inhaler as she starts to black out knowing she is about to die. Just then, a stranger appears just in time and calls the police. Once the police and paramedics arrive, Mari knows she’s going to need help from the one person she does not want to call…her estranged husband, who just happens to be a high profile defense attorney.

As the police try to ascertain what happened, something does not sit well with Detective Kerri Blasco and her partner, Detective Alex Brand. The murdered man ends up being an in demand photographer and their captain is being pressured to get the case wrapped up and the murderer charged. When Kerri tells her captain she’s not convinced that Mari is the murderer, he knows she won’t stop until she has things figured out in her own time. He still gives her a timeframe and tells her to get it figured out. Kerri soon discovers that things are not quite as they seem. After speaking with Mari, she’s even more sure that she’s missing something…but what?

Mari doesn’t know who to trust. Her estranged husband is a master at handling the press and high profile cases, but she doesn’t want to rely too much on him. Once she meets the mysterious man who saved her life, she feels a connection with him, only to end up questioning his reasons. She has friends who seem to be a little too curious about what happened and seem to be a step ahead of her as she tries to figure things out. Mari’s life soon becomes so upended that she doesn’t know who she can trust. What follows is a story that will leave you guessing until almost the very end.

Her Last Breath is a nice addition to the Detective Kerri Blasco series. Schneider does a masterful job of weaving her suspense filled story in this one. The characters are relatable and the premise is a good one. I’ve liked Kerri and Alex since I first read about them in the Embryo series and love seeing them move forward in their lives and their careers. I also liked Mari. However, the one sticking point for me was the way the author wrote Mari’s thoughts. There were so many broken thoughts and fragmented sentences that it was almost like reading a screenplay where she was concerned. The supporting characters weren’t as developed as Schneider normally writes them, but they were relatable nonetheless. With all of that said, Her Last Breath was a good read. If you’re a fan of the suspense genres, you won’t go wrong with J.A. Schneider. I look forward to the next installment.

REVIEW:

DIRTY SEXY SINNER is the fourth installment in the Dirty Sexy contemporary, adult, erotic, romance series co-authored by Carly Phillips and Erika Wilde. This is bartender Tara Kent, and Jackson Stone’s story line. DIRTY SEXY SINNER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and the family history between the Kincaid brothers.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Tara and Jackson) DIRTY SEXY SINNER focuses on the unknown Kincaid brother-Jackson Stone- Clay’s identical twin and a man none of the Kincaid brothers knew anything about. Jackson was adopted as a baby and only recently discovered that his adoption was illegal. His birth mother was a crack addict and life in the Stone household was anything but pleasant for Jackson Stone. With the recent reveal of his true identity Jackson goes in search of the brothers he never knew. Enter Tara Kent, Clay’s friend and co-worker, and the woman that would call to Jackson’s heart.

DIRTY SEXY SINNER is a story line focusing on betrayal, family and acceptance. Both Tara and Jackson’s lives are mired in neglect, dark secrets, and broken dreams. Jackson’s attraction to Tara is immediate but Tara’s relationship with Clay may be an obstacle that stands in their way. What ensues is the building relationship between Tara and Jackson, and Jackson’s less than warm welcome in the Kincaid clan. The $ex scenes are erotic and intense. Jackson likes to spank in the bedroom.

All of the previous story line couples play secondary and supporting characters. Clay has been caught unaware that he had another brother let alone a twin who is identical in every way.

DIRTY SEXY SINNER is a provocative and energetic read; a heartwarming story about family and friendships, second chances, and finding your soul mate when you least expect it. The premise is moving; the characters are passionate; the romance is sexy and intimate.

“It’s not that I don’t love you, and my tears are yet to dry. But you can’t go back and forth forever and we’ve already said goodbye.”

Through these words, a young poet unearths his musical soul while severing ties with the woman he loves after her stunning betrayal. Unknowingly, in writing this ballad of liberation, he will soon evolve as one of the fastest rising stars on the pop music landscape.

The year is 1991; the place, New York City. Here we meet Johnny Elias, a college student from Brooklyn with boundless adoration for two things in life: timeless popular music, and the heart of a sweet, complicated young woman who is clearly out of his league.

Megan Price not only is the object of Johnny’s affection, but also the only daughter of New York’s most powerful PR woman: the indomitable Katherine Price.

Projecting that her daughter’s boyfriend will never live up to the family standard, Katherine cleverly perpetrates a series of duplicitous schemes to rid Johnny from her high-class world. But in her callous disregard, she inadvertently sets him on a determined course to his improbable musical destiny – while sending her own daughter spiraling down a path of devastation.

Poet of the Wrong Generation tells the symmetrical story of a lovable underdog and his meteoric rise to stardom, his humiliating downfall and his unprecedented attempt to reclaim his place as the unlikely musical spokesman for his generation. At the heart of Poet is a tale of star-crossed lovers and their struggle with unforeseen success and disillusionment, in an attempt to rediscover lasting harmony.

Uniquely integrating a variety of original song compositions, Poet projects the epic clash between true contentment and the fable of stardom’s rewards; a nostalgic journey through the major events of the 1990s, with a cherished cast of characters and a stunningly unpredictable conclusion.

REVIEW: POET OF THE WRONG GENERATION by Lonnie Ostrow is an amazing and cleverly written, contemporary romance story of fiction following musician Johnny Elias, and the woman he loves Megan Price.

Told from several third person points of view, POET OF THE WRONG GENERATION covers approximately six years in the life, beginning in 1991, of contemporary singer/song writer and poet Johnny Elias –from his early days in college to his meteoric rise to fame and fortune, and the eventual downfall, not of his making. The reader is front and center as twenty one year old Johnny Elias enters into the world of an upstart musician working his way to the top. Before Johnny’s life begins its quick ascent he will lose the one person who keeps his heart beating and his soul alive. Megan’s rejection of the boy that she loves is the perfect muse for our story line hero, and with it comes the fame and notoriety of celebrity status and the fortunes of success…but jealousy, revenge and betrayal are accomplices to Johnny’s fall from grace- a fall that is triggered by someone from his past.

POET OF THE WRONG GENERATION is an astonishing and profound story; a unique look at one man’s climb to the top only to be destroyed by someone else’s greed, ambition, and need for retribution and revenge; a story of forbidden love between two people whose lives will be destroyed by resentment, the hunger for power, and a need to control. Lonnie Ostrow’s POET OF THE WRONG GENERATION is a masterpiece of literary fiction for today’s generation and the next.Make POET OF THE WRONG GENERATION your next go to read and enjoy

Interview

TRC: Hi Lonnie and welcome to The Reading Café.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow Lonnie: Goodreads / Website . Facebook Twitter /

Lonnie OstrowLonnie: I guess you could say that I have been an innovator, storyteller, promoter and celebrity-insider for more than two decades. With Poet Of The Wrong Generation, I combined all of my unique experiences to create a novel of love & betrayal, music & fanfare, downfall & redemption — a fable of stardom’s rewards, set in New York City during the 1990s. It’s been hailed as “the ultimate rock & roll love story.” Since 2001, I have been the publicity/marketing director & researcher for the iconic best-selling novelist Barbara T. Bradford. I also serve as an editorial and marketing consultant for a collection of first-time authors through The Editorial Department in Tucson, AZ. Previously I worked as a PR executive, promoting an assortment of first-time celebrity authors including Ray Manzarek of The Doors.

From 1995 – 2001, I was widely credited with inventing the “living celebrity postal phenomenon.” In all, I worked with more than 40 legendary personalities from the Bee Gees to Bob Dylan, Sylvester Stallone to Jackie Chan, creating media events to celebrate their postal recognition by an assortment of foreign nations.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Lonnie: Writing has been my backbone throughout my life. I recall my struggles in math and some science classes back in the middle years in grade-school. Out of need to impress my English teacher, I decided to sit down and write a handful of short-stories, which I turned in for extra credit. Mrs. Birnbaum, my 5th grade teacher, was particularly encouraging for me to continue focusing on creative writing. My college English professor in my freshman year was another great influence. Professor William Hochman pushed me to expand my skills in storytelling and in researching my subjects to create dynamic writing projects. It was my great thrill to recently present an advance copy of my debut novel to each of them.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties have you encountered writing and publishing your stories?

Lonnie: The writing itself went rather smoothly. It took me four months of round-the-clock writing to complete the initial draft. I spent eight months working with a wonderful editor, whipping the manuscript into shape. When it was “publication-ready” I submitted query letters to more than a hundred agents. I researched the process extensively, then sent out 10 – 15 targeted letters every week for several months. It took a lot of patience and endurance of rejection before I drew interest from a trio a literary agents. I selected one based upon her enthusiasm for my project and her track record of placements for contemporary fiction. My literary agent who I signed with in 2007 became insistent on me changing my novel from a PG-rated story into something more hardcore and explicit. She insisted that it needed to be that way in order to sell my book as “adult fiction.” I tried to meet her halfway, but she was not willing to compromise her position. And I was not prepared to compromise my personal values. We reached an impasse and parted ways. I probably could have landed another agent if I had wanted to. Instead, I tucked away the project until recently when I was approached by Harmony River Press. They were perfectly comfortable with the content of my story.

Poet of the Wrong GenerationTRC: Would you please tell us something about the premise of POET OF THE WRONG GENERATION?

Lonnie: The great, late, Harry Chapin was sang that “sometimes life is better when we don’t get to touch our dreams.” If my story has a primary theme, this is it. Johnny Elias is a college student from Brooklyn with boundless adoration for two things in life: timeless popular music, and the heart of a sweet, complicated young woman who is clearly out of his league. But in her callous disregard, she inadvertently sets him on a determined course to his improbable musical destiny – while sending her own daughter spiraling down a path of despair. “Poet” tells the story of a lovable underdog and his meteoric rise to stardom, his humiliating downfall and his unprecedented attempt to reclaim his place as the unlikely musical spokesman for his generation. At the heart of Poet is a tale of star-crossed lovers and their struggle with unforeseen success and disillusionment, in an attempt to rediscover lasting harmony.

TRC: How do you keep the plot(s) unpredictable without sacrificing content and believability?

Lonnie: Before I wrote a single page of this novel, I got to know my characters exceptionally well. They needed to feel “real” to me before I could convince readers of their authenticity. The story is rooted in some real-life incidents, and takes place in New York City in 1991 against a series of notable events. I think that using real history is essential in keeping the fiction “believable.” So much of what happens in the story has an element of reality to it, although there are a few rather sensational incidents that are eye-opening to the readers. Just not in a jarring way.

TRC: Are any of the characters or scenarios based in reality or from people you know or met?

Lonnie: There are elements in some of my characters that I find in myself and some other individuals who I know, or once knew. Johnny Elias is my protagonist. He isn’t me, but he is the fictional songwriter credited with writing and performing my song compositions. He’s the rock star who I never attempted to become. Howard Greffen is Johnny’s musical mentor. I based him loosely on a student who I went to Adelphi University with back in the early 90s. This too was a much older student with terrific musical ability. There’s a character called Larry Jacobs who is one of New York’s treasured FM radio personalities. I created him as a composite of several popular radio hosts including the legendary Cousin Brucie, whom I have had the pleasure of working with on several events.

TRC: Do you believe the cover image plays a deciding factor for many readers in the process of selecting a book or new series to read?

Lonnie: Absolutely. An eye-catching cover is essential, although perhaps less so today because so many readers purchase their books online, where the cover art appears smaller than a printed cover on a bookstore shelf. In my opinion, a strong cover is colorful, tells an element of the story, and best of all, it frames the title in a way that will visually resonate with readers.

TRC: When writing a story line, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Lonnie: The characters are my story. Yes there is a story arc which I had fleshed out in a detailed outline before writing the book. But when I sat down to write it, the characters came alive and elements of their personalities dictated the direction of secondary story lines. So many new wrinkles were worked in along the way because of how these characters influenced the pace.

TRC: Many writers bounce ideas with friends or other authors. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Lonnie: My wife, Simona, was my first sounding board. I would share ideas and scenes with her as the story developed. A childhood friend, Ben Wulfsohn, was actually the first person to read the rough manuscript. Ben was helpful in the naming of a supporting character, and in helping me to catch errors like missing hyphens, quotation marks, etc. Eventually, I worked closely with an excellent editor on polishing the writing until it was ready for circulation to agents.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the story line so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Lonnie: I happen to work with many first-time authors in editing their novels. One thing they all have in common is that they tend to make the same mistake in their first draft. That is: they compose too much narrative summary and not enough scenes with action and dialog. The reader wants to feel like they are part of the drama with the characters. They don’t want to read about it after the fact in a wrap-up show. I’ve read entire novels that were done in this fashion and had to be completely re-written. Thankfully, if these are my clients, I make sure to point out every place where a real-time scene needs to replace the epilogue-like summary. However, there are some books out there that have been published by mainstream authors that fall into this trap. It’s quite frustrating as the reader to be “told” the story instead of being inside the minds and hearts of the characters.

TRC: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, does the style of music influence the storyline direction? Characters?

Lonnie: My musical tastes are eclectic and range from classic rock to folk to 1970s/80s pop. But when I’m working, I strongly prefer to have on music without lyrics. Film scores are my primary choice. I have a few favorites including the soundtrack to the film Awakenings and The Last Of The Mohegans. Sad, expressive music can help me to squeeze out a more emotional scene. I also had my original song demos for the songs that are included in the story. I listened carefully to them during the time when I was ready to insert the song lyrics into my story.

TRC: What do you believe is the biggest misconception people have about authors?

Lonnie: To me, the most notable misconception is that just because an author writes one good book does not mean they will be able to duplicate this success, or creativity a second time. I happen to have a client author who had unprecedented exposure and sales for her first novel. Unfortunately for her, she has never been able to approach the quality of the story, or the strength of her characters in her subsequent work. Some writers really only have one good story in them. Those who are prolific at turning out a book a year are the ones who have both the skills and the deep imagination to keep on coming up with the next great protagonist and plot. But these are the rare and few.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Lonnie: I’m currently in the heart of promoting Poet Of The Wrong Generation. I’m fortunate in that I am a professional book marketer, so I’ve put together an extensive blueprint for spreading word for my debut novel. The campaign will keep me busy well into February of next year (2017). This includes my weekly blog articles, a pair of music videos, and a series of book commercials that I am producing. Beyond that, I plan to go back next spring and finish that second novel which I started long ago, but never completed. Mind you, this is not due to a lack of story, or ideas. I shelved it because I put all my focus into getting my first novel published. I’m now excited to revisit that second project with a fresh pair of eyes.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Lonnie: For readers who wish to hear the original songs contained in Poet Of The Wrong Generation, I have a page on my website where one can view a pair of music videos containing two of the more important songs from the story. The link is HERE: I know that readers will appreciate the concept of a book with an audio soundtrack.

TRC: Thank you Lonnie for taking the time to answer our questions. Congratulations on the release of POET OF THE WRONG GENERATION.

••••••••••••

REVIEW: TRU BLUE by Melissa Foster is a stand alone, erotic, romance story line focusing on mechanic and former inmate Truman Gritt, and children’s party planner Gemma Wright. Although TRU BLUE is a stand alone story, some of the characters from Melissa’s other series cross over as secondary and supporting characters including Bear Whiskey first introduced in River of Love (The Bradens at Peaceful Harbor).

Told from dual third person perspectives (Gemma and Tru) TRU BLUE focuses on family, friendship and love. Following the overdose death of his mother, Truman Gritt becomes father and guardian to two younger siblings (Kennedy and Lincoln) he knew nothing about. A late night run to the local department store for supplies finds our hero out of his element except for the help of a young woman who offers suggestions and a list of necessary items for two children under three years of age. Enter Gemma Wright, the woman who will call to Truman’s heart.

TRU BLUE is an emotional and heartbreaking story of one man’s struggle to protect his family but in the end believes he has failed every step of the way. His mother’s death, his younger brother’s (Quincy) addiction, and Truman’s subsequent time in jail for a crime he did not commit finds our hero reflecting on a future, raising a family with the woman he loves.

The relationship between Truman and Gemma is one of immediate attraction. Tru struggles to be both father and guardian to his younger siblings but gets plenty of help from friends and the new woman in his life. Truman and Quincy’s dark and painful past reveals a long history of neglect and abuse; Gemma’s pampered upbringing reveals a young woman raised to be seen and not heard. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top graphic text.

TRU BLUE is a dramatic and intense story of addiction and abandonment, recovery and rebirth, acceptance and falling in love. The premise is both heartbreaking and heartwarming; the characters are damaged, passionate and sensitive; the romance is wondrous and beautiful.

excerpt

TRUMAN GRITT LOCKED the door to Whiskey Automotive and stepped into the stormy September night. Sheets of rain blurred his vision, instantly drenching his jeans and T-shirt. A slow smile crept across his face as he tipped his chin up, soaking in the shower of freedom. He made his way around the dark building and climbed the wooden stairs to the deck outside his apartment. He could have used the interior door, but after being behind bars for six long years, Truman took advantage of the small pleasures he’d missed out on, like determining his own schedule, deciding when to eat and drink, and standing in the f**king rain if he wanted to. He leaned on the rough wooden railing, ignoring the splinters of wood piercing his tattooed forearms, squinted against the wetness, and scanned the cars in the junkyard they used for parts—and he used to rid himself of frustrations. He rested his leather boot on the metal box where he kept his painting supplies. Truman didn’t have much—his old extended-cab truck, which his friend Bear Whiskey had held on to for him while he was in prison, this apartment, and a solid job, both of which were compliments of the Whiskey family. The only family he had anymore.
Emotions he didn’t want to deal with burned in his gut, causing his chest to constrict. He turned to go inside, hoping to outrun thoughts of his own f**ked-up family, whom he’d tried—and failed—to save. His cell phone rang with his brother’s ringtone, “A Beautiful Lie” by 30 Seconds to Mars.
“F**k,” he muttered, debating letting the call go to voicemail, but six months of silence from his brother was a long time. Rain pelleted his back as he pressed his palm to the door to steady himself. The ringing stopped, and he blew out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d trapped inside. The phone rang again, and he froze.
He’d just freed himself from the dredges of hell that he’d been thrown into in an effort to save his brother. He didn’t need to get wrapped up in whatever mess the drug-addicted fool had gotten himself into. The call went to voicemail, and Truman eyed the metal box containing his painting supplies. Breathing like he’d been in a fight, he wished he could paint the frustration out of his head. When the phone rang for the third time in as many minutes, the third time since he was released from prison six months ago, he reluctantly answered.
“Quincy.” He hated the way his brother’s name came out sounding like the enemy. Quincy had been just a kid when Truman went to prison. Heavy breathing filled the airwaves. The hairs on Truman’s forearms and neck stood on end. He knew fear when he heard it. He could practically taste it as he ground his teeth together.
“I need you,” his brother’s tortured voice implored.
Need me? Truman had hunted down his brother after he was released from prison, and when he’d finally found him, Quincy was so high on crack he was nearly incoherent—but it didn’t take much for f**k off to come through loud and clear. What Quincy needed was rehab, but Truman knew from his tone that wasn’t the point of the call.
Before he could respond, his brother croaked out, “It’s Mom. She’s really bad.”

•••••••••••

REVIEW: TAKE MY DARE is the fourth installment in J. Kenner’s STARK INTERNATIONAL series focusing on Jackson Steele and Sylvia Brooks-Steele. The Stark International series is a spin off from J. Kenner’s Stark Trilogy (Damien and Nikki Stark). TAKE MY DARE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the STARK INTERNATIONAL series in order for cohesion and back story as each installment builds upon the previous story lines.

Told from first person point of view (Sylvia) and third person (Jackson) TAKE MY DARE focuses on the days leading up to and after the release of Sylvia’s father from prison. Sylvia’s father killed the man that all but destroyed Sylvia’s life but with his release, old photographs resurface reminding Sylvia about her shameful and heartbreaking past.

TAKE MY DARE is an erotic story line; a quick read; a novella length story that ‘teases’ the reader but never actually reveals the source of the release. TAKE MY DARE builds up the tension and possible source of the threat with two to three potential guilty parties at the helm. There is suspense and mystery; spicy scenes of romance and $ex; family, friendships and love. The premise is intriguing; the characters are passionate; the romance is provocative and intense.
