ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 15, 2017

A week before Christmas, Adeline is all set for her best friend’s wedding, even though she dreads having to go to it alone. As their relationship grows, Adeline realizes that true love does exist. What she doesn’t know is that her wish can’t last forever, that soon she’ll have to leave the past behind. Will Adeline and William find their way back to each other? Or will their love have to stay where it all began . . . in 1865? With mistletoe and Christmas magic, anything’s possible.

REVIEW: IT MUST’VE BEEN THE MISTLETOE by L.P.Dover is a stand alone, contemporary/ time travel/historical clean, paranormal romance story line that follows thirty year-old high school history teacher Adeline Hamilton as she ventures between the present and the past in search of her happily ever after. With her best friend’s Christmas wedding only days away Adeline struggles as the lone single female amongst her tight knit group of friends until a Christmas ‘angel’ beckons Adeline into the past, 1865 to be exact, where she will meet her future and the man who will steal her heart. Enter thirty three year-old, real estate billionaire William Blair, the groom’s brother, whose own journey to 1865 finds our hero falling in love with a woman he will soon forget. What ensues is the quick building romance between our leading couple that will span hundreds of years culminating in not one but two declarations of love, in this life and the last.

IT MUST’VE BEEN THE MISTLETOE is a sweet story; a clean romance involving magical mistletoe, a fairy godmother-like Christmas angel, time-travel dreaming, and a happily ever after. The premise is endearing; the characters are perfect and charming; the romance is cloyingly sweet, almost toothache inducing but, never the less, enjoyable and sentimental.

When Mary Elizabeth Rose’s father marries a much younger lass in hopes of siring a male heir, Mary sees her chance to escape her role as his chatelaine, but fears his next step will be to betroth her to a stranger. She has a different future in mind—with a sometimes charming, sometimes difficult and arrogant wounded Highlander.

He Owes Her His Life
Cameron Sutherland is not too delirious to recognize Mary Rose is the first woman he could seriously consider taking as his bride. Will They Put Love Before Duty?
For Mary, Cameron has become the man whose every smile has the power to bring her to her knees. But he is as duty-bound as she is, and responsibility calls him back to Sutherland, where she fears he will stay, forgetting her and all they’ve shared. With another powerful clan’s interests at stake, Cameron’s return sets events in motion that will have life-changing consequences for the woman he can’t forget.

REVIEW: His Highland Bride is a romantic adventure novel by Willa Blair. This is book three of His Highland Heart Series. It’s a wonderful look at the continuing storyline and characters in this saga.

This is a continuation of author Willa Blair’s period type novel series, this one is also set in the Scottish Highlands in 1411. It’s a good look at the period’s customs and clans, which adds to the appeal.

We’re taken back to the home of Mary Elizabeth Rose, the eldest daughter of James Rose, Laird of the Rose clan.

Previously, her sisters had run off and married into the clan of Brodie, leaving her at home with their widowed father and caring for Cameron Sutherland. Cameron had helped escort her sister home last summer and was wounded by an Irish gallowglass mercenary while only two days out from delivering her sister safely.

This is story of Cameron and Mary. It’s a tender and yet frustrating tale of building love with both parties afraid to admit their feelings to each other. It’s also a story of a stubborn father that doesn’t want his last daughter to leave him.
Author Blair has added wonderful intrigue, treachery, and betrayal to Mary’s story.

I found myself falling in love with Cameron Sutherland. A past flirt and more, he’s finally grown up and his heart has given itself to Mary. However, the road to happiness is a long and arduous one, filled with mystery, and danger. Is Cameron up to the task? Grab a copy of this wonderfully written book to find out!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date October 31, 2017

In Vanessa Kelly’s enchanting series, three young women descended from royalty overcome their scandalous beginnings to win the hearts of the ton’s most eligible men . . .

The illegitimate daughter of the Prince Regent might be expected to pursue various dubious professions. Actress, perhaps, or artist’s model. Even courtesan. Victoria Knight, however, has become a governess—a respectable choice, until she travels to Scotland to meet her new charges. The younger brothers of Nicholas Kendrick, Earl of Arnprior, aren’t children at all. They’re brawny, wild Highland men. As for the Earl, he’s handsome, guarded, and far too compelling . . . especially for a woman hiding a dark secret.

Nick needs a proper teacher to transform his unmarriageable brothers—and a sensible,
straight-laced wife for himself. Miss Knight seems to fit the bill on both counts. But he soon discovers there is more to Victoria than he thought. It’s not just her notorious origins, or the danger that’s followed her all the way to Scotland. It’s the fiery loyalty beneath that sedate façade. This, the real Victoria, is the woman Nick is starting to desire so desperately. And what an earl wants, he’ll use every seductive means to get . . .

REVIEW: 5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

OH MY WORD! Love it when big bad highlanders get a little proper English and make it their own! I absolutely loved this book and I am so hoping that another series comes out of this one. I can see where it would!

The Highlander’s Princess Bride is the third book in Vanessa Kelly “The Improper Princesses” and you do not need to read the first two to appreciate this book but please pick them up and immerse yourself into this world Vanessa creates. This series is also a spin off the another series called “The Renegade Royals”. A historical romance set in the regency era, it certainly takes us out of the ballrooms and gives us a fantastic dose of highlander and all they entice in us romantic readers.

Victoria Knight is the illegitimate daughter of the Prince Regent and a barmaid, and while she is the shame of her mother’s family, she has made an executive decision to not be anything like her mother and her free ways. Through hard work and determination, Victoria works hard and becomes a respectable governess that is considered to be strict but fair. She is disciplined, has a good head on her shoulders, has a knack for dealing with humourous pranksters, and an uncanny ability to sneak into the sternness of hearts. She makes one bad decision however and finds herself in very hot water. Having to flee her secret, she finds employment in the Highlands by becoming the governess of several grown Highlander men and a jackass grandfather who all need a swift kick in their ignorant ways. Victoria is about to get a real lesson herself though, when she finds herself slowly coming to adore these pains in her butt, and fall in love with the man who hired her on.

Nicholas Kendrick, Earl of Arnprior is my ideal book boyfriend. He is the head of his unruly family and fed up with the nonsense they create. He is handsome, strong willed and holds a few secrets close to his chest. When he hires Victoria he is taken aback at her methods to tame his brothers and a deep seated respect and loyalty begin to set in. He falls in love with her, but he also knows she is guarding secrets close to her heart, and wants her to trust him enough to let him help and protect her. Even if that needs to occur at her pace.

I ADORED the laughter I experienced reading this book. So very well matched, these two leads had quite the journey to get their HEA, but what a journey that was. I love how fierce and protective the men became of Victoria (especially when trouble comes knocking) and I love that she became protective of them. She truely blended into this family despite the harsh start they all had. I even didn’t mind the Grandpa Dearest who was a douche for a good chunk of the book, but I will admit there were times I was thinking “Enough already jerkface!” LOL

A very strong historical romance from Vanessa and I am going to make an effort to check out her previous books because I really enjoyed her writing that much. If you are looking for a chuckle this holiday season, love your Highlanders err.. difficult but so irresistible, and a woman who is not afraid to put them in their place then by all means do check this book out. I for one am really hoping that these brothers are another spin off series.

HAPPY READING! 🙂

EXCERPT 1: Lord Arnprior explains what he expects from his new governess, Victoria Knight.
“What I wish you to do is remind my brothers what those standards are. They were raised as gentlemen, but certain events have caused them to forget themselves. A refresher course is required.”
“And what would such a course entail?” She cast a disapproving glance at his brothers. “Beyond the obvious.”
Nick shrugged. “The usual one—how to engage in polite conversation with young ladies, how to conduct oneself appropriately at a dinner party, how to dance—”
“They already know how to dance,” barked Angus.
“Just reels, Grandda,” Grant said. “Oh, and the sword dance. But I don’t think many girls know that one.”
Alec choked, trying not to laugh. When Nick shot him a glare, his friend simply gave him a bland smile.
“And it would be fun to learn how to waltz,” Graeme said, suggestively waggling his eyebrows at Miss Knight.
“Ye wish to be caperin’ about like dandies?” Angus growled.
Miss Knight seemed to shake herself free of some sort of mental paralysis. “I am not a dancing teacher, my lord. I’m an educator.”
“For God’s sake, Arnprior,” Alec said. “Why don’t you simply hire a dancing master? Surely he could help the lads with those other”—he waved a vague hand—“social things.”
“I tried that. It didn’t work.” The horrific experiment of a few months ago remained vivid in his memory. The dancing master had barely survived the week.
“Bloody caper merchant,” Angus muttered.
“Let me see if I understand you correctly, my lord,” Miss Knight said. “You wish me to tutor your youngest brother. As well, I am to train your older brothers to be accomplished, well-mannered gentlemen for the purpose of putting them out on the marriage mart. And I am to do that without the help of other instructors who specialize in such matters.”
Nick met her irate gaze with an approving smile. “That sums it up nicely, I think.”
“Would you also like me to teach them fencing and boxing?” she asked sarcastically.
“Oh, we already know how to do those,” Grant piped up.
“Good God,” Royal said, shaking his head. “This is a complete joke.”
“I am forced to agree with your brother, Lord Arnprior,” Miss Knight said. “This must surely be a joke.”
“It surely is not,” Nick said. “And I never joke.”
“That’s actually true,” Graeme said.

SANDY’S REVIEW: My review is for THE CHOSEN by Thea Harrison.

ABOUT THE BOOK: In her visions, Lily sees two men fighting for her tiny country’s allegiance: the wolf and the tiger, each deadly, each cunning. One will bring Ys chaos and death, one a gentler path—but she’s destined to love whichever she chooses. The midwinter Masque is upon them, and the wolf is at her door…

Told from dual third person points of view (Lily and Wulf) THE CHOSEN by Thea Harrison is an adult, paranormal/fantasy romance storyline focusing on goddesses, priestesses, witches, The Chosen, psychic abilities, weather mages, seers and war.

Loosely connected to the author’s ELDER RACES series THE CHOSEN follows Lily, a priestess or as we will learn, The Chosen, the leader of her people at The Abbey, and the woman with whom Wulf will fall in love. Wulf and his people are at war, looking for a place to rest during the unnatural violent winter storms when he meets Lily, the woman that calls to his heart. Lily has visions of Y’s doom, at war with the unknown, and soon discovers that Wulf’s warriors are slowly being poisoned, quite possibly by someone within their midst.

Thea Harrison’s THE CHOSEN is a story of fantasy; of darkened realms accessed through hidden pathways; and of two people whose lives with be forever changed by defiance and war. A detailed story line that requires a little more explanation THE CHOSEN reads like a prequel novella or the first in a series of a new ELDER RACES spin off. The premise is entertaining and intriguing; the characters are passionate; the romance is seductive but limited.

As I stated earlier I chose to read and review THE CHOSEN, as Thea Harrison is the only author with whom I am familiar, and like THE CHOSEN, the other novellas as loosely linked to the other author’s established series and I am fearful of my lack of knowledge as it pertains to the other instalments.

Barb’s Anthology  Review:

Amid the Winter Snow by Thea Harrison, Grace Draven, Elizabeth Hunter, Jeffe Kennedy is a paranormal anthology taking place during the frozen brutal winter snow. Since these are novellas, I will do a short review on each book.

THE DARKEST MIDNIGHT

The Darkest Midnight by Grace Draven was the first book I have read by this author. It was set in her Wraith King’s series.  Upon finishing this book, I will have to find time to check out her other books. I really enjoyed The Darkest Midnight.  Draven has created two wonderful characters in Jahna, our wonderful heroine and Radimar, our equally fantastic hero.  What made this different was the period of time in this slow built romance.  When Radimar, a swordmaster, came to teach Jahna’s brother to become a swordsman, she was only 15.

Jahna had a purple birthmark blemish on the side of her face, causing others to not look at her.   Radimar treated her differently, and during his 3 year stay, he also taught her to become stronger and learn how to defend herself.  During those years, he realized that he was falling for her, but felt his life was not meant for her, especially since she was in training to become Kings Chronicler. 8 years later they meet again at her brother’s wedding, and those feelings are rekindled. It was a sweet romance, and a beautiful ending.  Very well done.

THE CHOSEN

The Chosen by Thea Harrison is a novella from her wonderful Elder Races series.  This was a different storyline then the normal Eder Races, and I loved it.  Harrison has created two wonderful heroes in Lily and Wulf, whom I loved,

Lily is a powerful witch who is the chosen one (by a goddess). She is the leader of a group of witches and defenders who believe in her, and protect her.  In her visions there are two men at war, and Lily must find a way to find the true culprit and stop the war that can destroy their lands.

She meets Wulf who comes to see the chosen one for help in fighting this war.  Despite everyone fearing him as the terrible villain, Lily senses something different. Wulf started off as an angry leader, trying to prove that he was innocent of those rumors of him killing his brother.  Soon Lily sees a sweet funny caring side of him.  I know after a short period, I fell in love with Wulf, and Lily begins to fall too. I also liked many of the secondary characters that Harrison has created, such has both Wulf’s top soldiers and Lily’s witches.

As always, Thea Harrison gives us a wonderful, romantic story, great couple, exciting action and an enjoyable story line. Even if you have not read the Elder Races series, which you should be reading, The Chosen reads very well as a standalone.
THE STORM

The Storm by Elizabeth Hunter is another author who I have not read before.  We meet our heroine, Renata, in a flash back to when we see how she lost her family, including her soul mate in a massacre of the Irin people by the Grigori.  Many years later, Renata remains broken, and unable to feel anything but hatred for the evil Grigoris, whom she will kill at sight.  She meets our hero, Max, and they begin an affair.  Though she is comfortable with Max, Renata doesn’t feel that she can love him, and there can be no future.  He though knows she is the one for him, and is determined to win her over, though one night she leaves him, telling him to find his true mate.  The story picks up 18 years later, when in the midst of a major storm, he climbs the snowy mountains to find her at her old mansion, where she keeps to herself, still hardened by her tragic loss.   Renata still cannot resist Max, but stubbornly insists he needs to leave and look for his true mate.  Max will try to prove to her that their love is real, and she is his soul mate.
Stuck in the mansion with the storm, they discover a secret cavern, where they find things hidden from the past, and also someone has been living in those caverns.  The findings and the people hiding in the caverns will open Renata’s eyes, and in time her heart.  She will begin to see that over all these years, things have changed, even her hated Grigoris.  It was really sweet when Renata begins to let her love for Max open and change her life.  I thought the beginning was a bit slow, but overall I did enjoy this story.

THE SNOWS OF WINDROVEN

The Snows of Windroven by Jeffe Kennedy is another author I have not read before.  We meet our heroes, Queen Amelia (Ami) of the Twelve Kingdoms and her guard and lover, Ash.  Being a new to her throne, Ami is determined to go back to her old mansion, where she lived before the death of her husband, despite the fears that she faces danger there.  Ash, loves Ami, but knows that his past as an ex convict is not what is good for the now Queen.  He is determined to get her, and her two children to safety, and leave.  Ami does all she can to try to convince him that they can make it work.  When they arrive, Ash and the Queen’s soldiers will fight for their lives in a surprise attack.

What follows is somewhat exciting, but slowly Ash will begin to have hope that a future is possible, if only they survive.  I love Ami’s two young children, who are shapeshifters, and it was fun to watch them shift as a wolf or kitten.  This did add a nice element to the story. I did enjoy the story, as well as the main characters created by Kennedy; Ash, Ami and the two children.  Nice quick read.

Darcy Butler has spent the last three years in prison for beating up her abusive brother-in-law. Her only regret is that she didn’t hurt him worse and stop him from killing her sister in a drunken car crash six months later. But now, Darcy just wants to rebuild her life. Starting with finding her sister’s child.

But Matt doesn’t want an ex-con with a record for violence anywhere near Lulu. Unfortunately, he can’t seem to keep away from Darcy, himself. Despite their differences, their chemistry is combustible…and the sex is incredible! Still, it can’t possibly last. Can it?

•••••••••••

REVIEW: THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY is the third and final instalment in Nina Croft’s contemporary, adult CUTTING LOOSE erotic, romance series focusing on three friends-Summer, Regan and Darcy – three women who met in prison while serving sentences for crimes of passion. This is gym owner and MMA fighter Darcy Butler, and SAS Captain Matt Peterson’s story line. THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY can be read as a stand alone without any difficult. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion between the three former inmates who became the best of friends.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Darcy and Matt) THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY follows Darcy Butler as she struggles to gain access to the little girl her sister left behind. Three years earlier Darcy was sent to prison for beating up her sister’s husband Steven-a man who routinely abused and battered Darcy’s older sister; and the man who would eventually destroy all of their lives. Fast forward to present day wherein Darcy has yet to meet her two-year old niece, now in the care of her former brother in law’s brother. Enter Captain Matt Peterson, the man with whom Darcy will fall in love. What ensues is the building relationship between Matt, Darcy and their niece Lulu, and the potential fall out when Lulu’s paternal grandparents, back in Australia, offer a permanent home to the child with whom Darcy has fallen in love.

Darcy Butler is a tattooed fighter; a woman who isn’t afraid of physical confrontation but a woman who battles between her head and her heart. Falling in love with Matt Peterson meant he had the ability to break her heart, a heart Darcy believes was hardened upon the death of her estranged but beloved sister. Matt Peterson knew only one thing and that was the woman who claims to be his niece’s aunt is the same woman he believes to be psychotic stranger. Matt’s attraction to Darcy is tempered by the prior knowledge of Darcy’s assault against the brother he barely knew, and her physical appearance that would not be accepted as an army captain’s wife.

The relationship between Darcy and Matt is strained by Matt’s preconceived notions about his brother’s former sister in law-a woman he believes to be a drug, addled fighter who routinely goes around beating up people she doesn’t know. As the story line progresses Matt begins to see the ‘real’ Darcy Butler, a woman whose heart had been broken too many times in the past; a vulnerability that was slowly breaking down the barriers around our heroine’s heart. The $ex scenes are seductive and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are re-introduced to the previous story line couples including Nathan Carter and Regan Malloy (Falling for the Bad Girl #1), and Nik Masterson and Summer Delaney (Blackmailing the Bad Girl #2), as well as Darcy and Matt’s two year old niece Lulu; Darcy’s friend and fellow fighter Sam: attorney Elinor Saunders; nanny Diana Prescott; Matt’s meddling friends Angie and Gary; Matt’s parents Jolene and Gareth Peterson, and his younger sister Hannah.

THE BAD GIRL AND THE BABY is a story of opposites attract / enemies to lovers but struggles with a spate of preconceived notions from a number of the story line characters including our leading couple. Through a series of lies told by his brother Steve, Matt believes Darcy to be a danger to Lulu and everyone he loves; and Darcy is a woman who sacrificed everything to protect a woman, who in the end, died at the hands of the man she claimed to love. A lack of communication, and the fear of rejection and loss keep our couple at arm’s lengths but none more so than Darcy Butler who fears losing the man and the young child she had grown to love. The premise is dramatic and heartbreaking; the characters are energetic and spirited; the romance is emotional and intense.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 12, 2017

There are three things Ford Garrison wants more than anything: to build, to report to no one, and the chance to live his life without the prying eyes of the good folks of Eagle’s Ridge. Having spent ten years in the Navy as part of their construction battalion, he was able to live out most of that dream. Two out three wasn’t bad, right? Now that he’s out of the service, things aren’t falling into place quite as easily as he hoped and he ends up back home with all eyes on him.

It wasn’t as if Callie had gone out of her way to end up in Ford’s path, but somehow that happened all on its own and the town gossips were having a field day! Could she help it that she was living in the house Ford had hoped to claim as his own or that the work on his grandmother’s ranch meant they were living not fifty-feet away from each other?

Ford was determined to come home, do a job to help his grandmother and leave. Callie James is a distraction and she represents everything he has spent years running away from. Now he’s at odds with his friends, his family and himself about where his home and future are going to be.

Could he walk away from Eagle’s Ridge a second time?

•••••••••••

REVIEW: FORD by Samantha Young is the seventh and final instalment in the multi-authored 7 BRIDES FOR 7 SOLDIERS romance novella series focusing on 7 former military heroes (family and friends) who return to their home town of Eagle’s Ridge. This is thirty year old Navy sailor and carpenter Ford Garrison, and twenty six year old kindergarten teacher Callie James’ story line. FORD can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. Some of the characters cross over between story lines and authors.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Ford and Callie) FORD looks at the building relationship between Ford Garrison, and Callie James. When Ford got the call that his beloved eighty-eight year grandmother’s house had been damaged in a recent storm our hero returns home to discover that the once feisty woman now lay injured in the hospital with less than happy prospects for a return to her once independent lifestyle and way of living; and a childhood acquaintance is currently renting the cottage on the family owned property. Enter Callie James, Eagle’s Ridge newest kindergarten teacher and the woman with whom Ford will fall in love. What ensues is the building romance between Callie and Ford, and the potential fall-out as Ford finds himself trapped between family obligations, and his need to run from everything Eagle’s Ridge represents-both past and present including the small town gossip, and never quite meeting the expectations of his otherwise successful parents and kin, in this Ford’s attitude is a bit disconcerting; the maturity level is questionable as he struggles to accept what is and what could be.

Ford Garrison had no idea what his grandparents had in store for his future but returning to Eagle’s Ridge our hero discovered more than he could have ever imagined including the knowledge that his heart truly belonged in the town in which he grew up. Callie James has had a crush on Ford for as long as she can remember but Ford’s need to escape the small town mentality and busybodies of Eagle’s Ridge meant there was an expiry date on their growing love-a love Callie knew was about to break her heart. As Ford struggles between head and heart, Callie begins to pull back fearing the loss of the man that she loves. The $ex scenes fade to black or are mostly implied.

All of the previous 7 BRIDES FOR 7 SOLIDERS story line ‘heroes’ make a cameo appearance or play a secondary and supporting roles. We are introduced to Ford’s beloved grandparents Ben and Margaret Garrison, his parents as well as Callie’s mother Ruthie James.

FORD is a story of family and friendship; expectations and revelations; falling in love and letting go of the past. The premise is heart warming; the characters are colorful and dynamic; the romance is passionate.

excerpt

“What are you working on out here? More wreaths?”
With a soft laugh, she pulled back and stepped out of his arms. “I am. Doing something like this is normally very soothing for me. When I got home, I came right out here rather than going into the cottage.”
“And did it help?”
Callie shook her head. “Unfortunately, it was so quiet out here, and I’ve already made four of these wreaths so I didn’t even have to think about what I was doing.”
“So your mind immediately went to your mom.”
She nodded. “Exactly.”
Stepping around her, Ford examined the wreath. It looked exactly like the one she had given him for his grandmother’s front door, but now he took the time to look at the details. It seemed so simple at first glance, but when he realized how much time went into weaving the lights and how tedious that could be, he was more than a little impressed. The vine was fragile, and he knew he’d more than likely crush some of it if he tried to do it himself.
Unable to help himself, he reached for one of Callie’s hands and studied it. It was small and delicate. Her fingers were slim and smooth. No wonder she could do work like this. He looked at her face and saw her studying him, her expression serious.
And Callie rarely looked serious or intense. Her features were always relaxed or smiling. This was…different.
He brought her hand to his lips and kissed her palm. “I was just noticing how intricate this work is,” he said gruffly. “I’m a little in awe of what you do.”
“Me? But…what you do is so much more—”
Ford placed a finger over her lips and shook his head. “I’m in awe of you,” he repeated, and slowly pulled her in close again.
Callie’s lips parted on a soft gasp as her eyes met his. And those beautiful eyes seemed to have a million questions in them, and Ford only had one answer.
He kissed her.
Slowly. Sweetly. He savored her as she melted against him. She hummed as her arms wrapped around him and in that instant, Ford knew what he had to do.
He lifted his head and looked down at her. Her lips were wet and her cheeks were flushed and she was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen. So many nights over the last week they’d been like this, and right now, Ford knew he wanted more.
“Come home with me, Callie,” he murmured against her lips before resting his forehead against hers.
“Yes.”
Never had a single word sounded sweeter.

REVIEW: 4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Can we just pause for one quick moment and appreciate the cover of this book? I do love it when a historical romance author nails a cover. Some can come across as cheesy or cheap but this is a beautiful cover. Soft colours, hot characters with a tantalizing promise of sexy but not smutty. AND .. THAT DRESS!

The Lord Meets His Lady by Gina Conkle is the third book of her “Midnight Meetings” historical romance series, and while it absolutely can be read as a stand alone, I never recommend one do this, as why miss any opportunity to get a complete picture of a series? That being said, do not deprive yourself of a good story if previous books are an issue.

Lord Marcus Bowles has been a bad bad boy and is banished to seclusion for one too many scandals until he can sort himself out. He had been indulgent, is the second son, and is ready to go and learn his lesson properly this time. He will be living in one of his families older not so grande properties to keep himself out of scandal. He is loving by nature, kind even, playful, handsome but ready to turn things around and be a grown up. However, Marcus still has to be Marcus and rescuing a damsel in distress is truely too tempting to resist .. but this damsel may be his worst scandal yet.

Genevieve Turner has lived a hard life. She is the product of a mother who was a whore and died of the french pox and a father who’s identity she doesn’t know. She is also loving, kind, perhaps a little naive in some ways, and sadly, has had to resort to selling herself a time or two to make ends meet. She is eager to live a good life .. a better life. She was tricked into signing a contract (one that forces her life’s direction in a place she is not comfortable in), and when things comes to light she opts to dash away, assume a new identity and start a new life. This life never was suppose to include a stolen kiss, a man she is drawn to, more kisses and revealing truths that can affect a future she just started.

This was an a great book about two people meant for each other. They were complimentary, really suited each other and while yes you have a push and pull (let’s face it, the story would be boring without that), it wasn’t so dramatic I was rolling my eyes. I will say the story hung a little for me and there were times I was hoping the story would just get moving a little. However, Gina writes with detail, so the images you come up with in your mind are crisp. I also have to admit that I really like that Genevieve was sullied for the times she lived in, and despite that, love can still happen. It was such a stoic time that I like to read a little stolen happy stories like this.

A great book one can enjoy over the holidays and if historical romance is your go to genre then please do yourself a favour and check this one out!

HAPPY READING!

excerpt

“Have you kissed her yet?” Samuel asked.
Marcus and Samuel rode along the pasture’s perimeter with an eye to the cottage. Miss Turner’s vibrant red cloak stood out against mellow sandstone. Shovel in hand, she jabbed the earth with determined thrusts. The weeds didn’t stand a chance.
“I assume we’re speaking of my housekeeper.” Marcus halted Khan. “A hardworking, respectable woman of excellent character. She’s done a fine job with Pallinsburn. I wouldn’t besmirch her honor with talk like that nor should you.”
Samuel rode on, his shoulders bouncing with laughter. “And every night she ascends to heaven on angel’s wings.”
If his friend saw right through him, how soon before others did?
“Came on strong, did I?”
Samuel pinched a small space between his thumb and forefinger. “A little.”
He urged his horse forward. “I don’t want her reputation damaged.”
“Should’ve thought about that before making her your housekeeper. People will talk.”
Marcus searched Miss Turner out again, a gust boxing his ears like some admonishing aunt.
Was it so wrong to want to help a woman in need?
His housekeeper cleared the last weedy invaders off his front step. Her serious exterior belied deep-seated passion, evidenced in the way she dove into every task. The enthusiasm fascinated him.
And yes, he admired her other parts.
“What will people talk about? Her youth?” he retorted. “Does a woman have to be long in the tooth to hold a decent position?”
“No, but it’d help if you were toothless. Or married.” Samuel stared ahead, the wind assaulting his queue. “We don’t set the rules, but we both know them.”
“You hired her, and you’re not a married man.”
Samuel’s gaze pinned him. “Nor do I have your unsavory reputation.”
“I’d wager my housekeeper has more honor, more determination in her little finger than any woman of my acquaintance,” he said fiercely. “Who I am should have no bearing on her.”
“Me thinks you doth protest too much…or whatever that drivel is. A clear sign you have it bad for her, but haven’t touched her. Yet.”
Why did Samuel hunt for sordid details? Likely he’d seen through Miss Turner with her low-cut bodices and saucy skirts. Didn’t matter. She worked hard. He didn’t care if she fit the proper housekeeper stamp or not.
He ought to buy a dull grey gown for her, if only to aid her reputation. Smiling against his collar, he guessed she wouldn’t wear it. Nor should she have to. One look at his red-cloaked gardener and he was certain of one thing: he’d do his anything to keep his friend, or any man, on the straight and narrow when it came to Miss Turner. She deserved a fresh start.
His housekeeper had nabbed a piece of his heart.
But the afternoon ride wasn’t meant to discuss his housekeeper’s allure. Samuel pulled his hat low, failing to look him in the eye.
“Quoting Shakespeare,” Marcus said. “You must be reading with Adam again.”

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 12, 2017

He knows if she’s been bad or good.

Amidst the sugarplums and mistletoe, fashion stylist Julia Bennett is every inch a scrooge. Known for her ice-queen ways, she’s having a meltdown over a botched business deal and an upcoming milestone birthday. Add the pressure of forced holiday cheer, and she’s ready to dive into the spiked eggnog and not come out until summer.

Warren Stone, president and owner of the Sugar Rush Candy Company, is determined to make Julia slow down and enjoy the holidays. As her friend and confidante for thirteen years, he knows her better than anyone. But when decking the halls leads them to an explosive, sexy night, everything suddenly changes.

When Warren decides Julia is all he wants for Christmas, will she risk their longtime friendship for the gift of love?

••••••••••

REVIEW: SWEET LIFE is the fifth instalment in Nina Lane’s contemporary, adult SUGAR RUSH erotic romance series focusing on the Stone family and the Sugar Rush Candy company. This is patriarch and Sugar Rush president Warren Stone, and fashion stylist Julie Bennett’s story line. SWEET LIFE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Warren and Julia) SWEET LIFE focuses on the friends to lovers relationship between fifty-four year old widower, father of seven, and President of the Sugar Rush Candy Company Warren Stone, and his forty-nine year old, sister in-law Julia Bennett. Fourteen years earlier Warren lost his beloved wife Rebecca to a tragic accident that also saw our heroine lose the sister she would never forget. Throughout the years Julia has been the family’s rock, helping to take care of her sister’s seven children but in the ensuing time our heroine’s personal life took a backseat to the fulfilment of her career, and the support of her extended family. Fast forward to present day wherein Julia’s attraction to Warren is met with an equally aggressive reaction by her late sister’s husband-a man she has lusted over for close to thirty-five years. What ensues is the building romance between Julia and Warren, and the potential fall out as their secret romance becomes fodder for the family, and Julia is unable to let go of the past.

Throughout the story line the ghost of Warren’s late wife Rebecca is a major stumbling block for our story line couple. Unable to get past the breakdown of her relationship with Rebecca, prior to the death of the sister she loved, Julia struggles with the memories of what happened, and the revelations about her feelings for the man she would grow to love. As Warren prepares for retirement, the family must come to terms with their father’s decision, and the change in direction for the Sugar Rush company.

The relationship between Julia and Warren is a friends to lovers, older couple romance; a brother in law / sister in law attraction that has continued to flourish, building towards something more than friendship and mutual loss. Secrets are revealed that could potentially destroy Julia’s relationship with the family she loves. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense-it is wonderful to see an ‘older couple’ enjoying an active sex life not deferring to questionable age-related ability.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting cast including many of the previous story line characters: Luke and Polly (Sweet Dreams #1), Evan (Sweet Escape #2), Tyler (Sweet Surrender #3), Gavin an Mia (Sweet Time #4) Adam, Spencer, and Hailey Stone; Julia’s assistants Anisa and Marco, as well as several local residents of Indigo Bay, California who are participating in the local Christmas pageant.

The world building focuses on family; on Warren’s upcoming retirement plans; and Julia’s inability to love and be loved. The premise is captivating and inspiring; the romance is passionate and seductive; the characters are charismatic, energetic and lively. Nina Lane is a go –to author for me for her ability to pull me in, suck me under, make me cry, and never let go.

excerpt

“Now step into my office.”
Julia blinked at his hard tone, her gaze shifting to his closed office door. “I beg your pardon?”
Warren opened the door. “In. Now.”
Her features tightened with resistance just as the elevator doors opened and several employees emerged, their voices rising in chatter. Julia crossed the hallway in front of them, her shoulders rigid. He caught a whiff of Chanel No. 5 as she passed him.
He entered the office behind her and closed the door, flicking the lock shut.
“You are not to take out personal crap on my employees,” he said. “That’s not how I run this company.”
Julia’s lips compressed. “Odd that you’ve never before questioned my treatment of your employees. And it wasn’t personal. She needed to know she’d screwed up.”
“Announcing the holiday party early is not screwing up,” Warren replied evenly. “You’re pissed off because you’ve had a shitty week, you have too much on your plate, an old bucket list has thrown you off your game, and you don’t know what to do with the fact that we fucked the other night.”
Two spots of color appeared on her cheeks. “I seem to recall that what I did with that fact was tell you it wasn’t going to happen again. After which you informed me in excellent caveman style that I was wrong. You seem to forget I’m never wrong.”
About this, you are.
He bit back the words. He hadn’t become the president of Sugar Rush by throwing his weight around. He knew how to bide his time, work his way into getting what he wanted. And damned if he didn’t want her more with every passing second.
“Well?” Julia put her hands on her hips and glared at him. “Are we done here?”
Under her make-up, purplish smudges shadowed her eyes. Brackets of tension lined her mouth. His jaw tightened.
“You had a migraine yesterday,” he said.
“What the fuck do you care?” Julia snapped.
Warren’s hands flexed. He was used to her quick-fire cursing, all the more effective when delivered by a woman who looked like royalty, but he didn’t like being the recipient of her wrath.
“I’m putting Mia Donovan in charge of the Sugar Rush holiday party,” he said.
“You’re firing me?” Julia stared at him, her eyes widening. “Are you serious?”
“Yes.” He steeled himself against her shock and the knowledge that he was hurting her. “You’ve planned it for the past ten years, and it’s time to hand it over to someone else.”
“You don’t get to decide that.”
“Yes, I do. Sugar Rush is my company. This is also the event where I’ll be announcing my retirement. You’re not going to plan it.”
“Because I have too much on my plate?” Julia stopped in front of the windows, her arms crossed and her fiery gaze fixed on him. “Thanks for your concern, Daddy, but I assure you I can handle everything I take on.”
“That’s why you’re such a success. It’s also why your headaches are getting worse.”
“You are not my fucking doctor.”
“Stop swearing.”
She barked out a laugh. “You need to rethink this retirement thing, Warren. It’s making you soft.”
Given the state of his dick, he was anything but soft.
“If you won’t delegate your projects, I will,” he said.
“Because you can’t stop being the boss, even if you think otherwise.” Julia paced angrily to the desk, her eyes flaring with blue ice. “Why are you retiring, Warren? Everyone knows you’re the power behind the throne, much as you’ve let the boys take all the glory. Three months—hell, one month from now when you have nothing to do and no one to order around, you’re going to wonder why you made such a bad decision.”
Warren’s jaw clenched. He was sick of getting pushback from all sides. “I’ve been in business my entire life. I know what I’m doing.”
“So do I, dammit,” Julia retorted. “I don’t need you looking out for me.”
“I will always look out for you.”
She came to a halt, her whole body stilling. By contrast, Warren’s heartbeat kicked up, sudden heat flooding his veins. Their gazes met across the room, a crackling electric current firing through the air.
Julia took a breath, her breasts heaving beneath her jacket.
“Goddamn you, Warren Stone,” she whispered.
“I told you to stop swearing.” He advanced, his own breath increasing, his hands fisting and unfisting at his sides.
Rebellion tightened her features. “And if I don’t?”
“You sure you want to find out?”
He closed the distance between them, his lust flaring like a match to dry leaves.
What the fuck was going on with them?
The question flared like a comet through his mind and died just as fast—because he didn’t care about the answer. His mind was consumed with the thought of tasting her red lips again, sweet like cherries, spicy like peppers. Her mouth could deliver an insult as sharp and searing as a blade, but he knew—had always known, even if he’d smothered the knowledge—that the sounds issuing from Julia Bennett’s mouth could also be smooth, hot murmurs of lust that rushed straight to his blood. Weakening him of all thought, all control, inciting him with the urge to—
He grabbed her shoulders, hauling her soft, slender body against him. He’d always loved the contrast of Julia, the sharp-tongued, acidic queen and the relentlessly devoted aunt. The rigorous boss who shot orders like arrows, and the loyal friend who bought Hailey’s favorite peanut butter, sent care packages to Gavin Knight when he was deployed in Iraq, spent hours on end with Evan at the hospital.
He stared down at her fine features, pale skin, and wide blue eyes that he’d seen almost every day of his life for the past thirteen years—and suddenly now it felt as if he were looking at her for the first time. Had he never noticed that tiny birthmark right beneath her left eye? Or the silver flecks in her irises, like falling snow? Or the perfect curve in her upper lip, tempting him to put his tongue there and—
Oh, he’d noticed all right. He’d just tried to pretend he hadn’t.
“What the hell am I going to do with you, Julia?” he muttered.
“Fire me, apparently.” Her tone was bitter, her eyes blue fire.
Her gaze flickered involuntarily to his mouth, her lips parting. He slipped his hand beneath her chin, lifting her face to his. His heart jackhammered. Her breath brushed against his mouth, the familiar scent of her—Chanel No. 5, lavender soap, pure Julia—suddenly exotic and tantalizing.
“I’m going to let you go,” he said slowly, “and take two steps back. I want you to reach under your skirt and take your underwear off… if you’re wearing any.”
