“Victoria, will you marry me?”

Those words changed my life forever…just not in the way it would for most. I had it all until one fateful evening transformed my life in ways I never imagined.

Nine months later, I move to a sleepy little town, hoping to escape the demons of my past. As I attempt to claim back my life, Jude Montgomery enters my world, and things begin to change.

I thought running would appease the nightmares, but I soon discover my past won’t let go. Things are not what they seem, and I begin to question the world as I know it. Jude may hold the answers, but will my love for him blind me to the truth?

Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas? In my case, yes, it does.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date August 31, 2019

Danger awaits Marine-turned-lawyer Jake Wolfe on his vacation to sunny San Diego and Cabo San Lucas. There he finds sugary white sand beaches, warm turquoise water, boat trips among gray whales, and … cold blooded murder.

It was meant to be a relaxing holiday for Jake and his adopted war dog, Cody, but violence erupts when he crosses paths with a criminal cartel urgently seeking to reclaim a deadly package.

Jake learns the missing item is a threat to US citizens and vows to stop the cartel from possessing it, no matter what vigilante justice actions he might have to take.

Time is running out and thousands of innocent lives are at risk. Will the two combat veterans be able to retrieve the dangerous item before the killers do? The clock is ticking, but Jake hopes that if anybody can help find the package, it has to be his highly-trained and ultra-intelligent dog, Cody.

•••••••••

REVIEW: SAN DIEGO DEAD is the fourth instalment in Mark Nolan’s contemporary, adult JAKE WOLFE military, suspense series focusing on former Marine, above Top Secret clandestine Black Ops specialist and attorney Jake Wolfe.

NOTE: SAN DIEGO DEAD includes scenes of violence and implied torture that may not be suitable for more sensitive readers.

Told from several third person perspectives including Jake Wolfe, SAN DIEGO DEAD follows in the wake of Jake Wolfe’s latest mission wherein our hero took down a known Albanian pirate who sold stolen watercraft to the Mexican cartel. Extending his mission in Cabo San Lucas, in an effort to enjoy some downtime with his lady love Sarah, Jake and Sarah, along with Jake’s Marine buddy Pez, will become the target of the cartel, bringing danger and death back home to everyone he knows and loves. From terrorism to human trafficking, drug smuggling and international espionage Jake Wolfe demands entrance into a world that threatens the people back home when the hunt for an unknown ‘package’ becomes personal and deadly.

SAN DIEGO DEAD is an energetic and dynamic story of action and suspense. Along with his military support dog Cody, and the help of numerous secret government agencies, Jake is determined to take down those who have threatened so many lives.

From the outset, Jake Wolfe is a man who expects trouble at every turn: suspicious of everyone, mistrusting on instinct, our hero must endure the loss of friends, and the possibility of losing the woman he loves as his first priority is to the United States of America.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, aggressive and spirited characters (several of whom we have met in previous instalments) including Jake’s handlers with the US government Secret Service Agent Shannon McKay; Veterinarian Sarah Chance; Jake’s former Marine buddies Sammy ‘Pez’ Lopez, and Lieutenant Terrell Hayes; Secret Service agents Yvonne Greene and Easton; Cody the wonder dog; SFPD Sergeant Beth Cushman, as well as the requisite evil including cartel leader El Rojo, and the Angel of Death.

SAN DIEGO DEAD is a dramatic, intense and action-packed story with plenty of military and Black Ops jargon but for a man practised in the art of secret military operations and mission, Jake Wolfe is easily found by everyone bent on destroying his life. The premise is intriguing and suspense filled; the characters are numerous and impassioned.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 4, 2019

Billy Winston’s family is going to see him happy and in love if it’s the last thing they do.

No one deserves a happily-ever-after quite as much as the second oldest Winston brother and his lady love, Claire McClure (aka Scarlet St. Claire). Cruelty and circumstance tore them apart almost twenty years ago. Secrecy and bitterness kept them separated.

But you know who’s tired of their separation and stubbornness? Everyone. Especially Billy Winston’s family. And now they’re going to do something about it.

Well-meaning interference means the star-crossed lovers can’t stop tripping over each other in the hills of Tuscany, the catacombs of Rome, and the waterways of Venice. Billy and Claire find themselves thrown together and at the mercy of the Winston siblings’ shenanigans.

But will their forced proximity bring them together? Or push them even further apart?

This second-chance romance brings back the entire Winston gang, playing cupid in one last story of love, hi-jinks, and family collusion.

•••••••••

REVIEW:BEARD NECESSITIES is the seventh full-length instalment in Penny Reid’s contemporary, adult WINSTON BROTHERS romance series focusing on the Winston siblings of Green Valley, East Tennessee. This is thirty-four year old, Congressman Billy Winston, and thirty-two year old, country singer Claire McClure’s (aka Scarlet St. Claire) story line. BEARD NECESSITIES can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading book six BEARD WITH ME for some of the history between Billy and Scarlet. The author recommends reading books 0.5, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the Winston Brothers series to learn more of the backstory involving our leading couple, and their warring families.

SOME BACKGROUND: At the age of sixteen, Billy Winston was beaten within inches of his life by the Iron Wraiths MC but Scarlet St. Claire would never know the truth until eighteen years later, a truth that would reveal how much Billy was willing to risk to save the life of the young woman he loved.

Told from three first person perspectives including Cletus, Billy and Scarlet BEARD NECESSITIES follows the rekindling romance and relationship between Billy Winston, and Claire McClure (aka Scarlet St. Claire). Eighteen years earlier Billy and Scarlet’s world imploded when following years of abuse at the hands of her father, Scarlet walks out of Billy’s life, and into the arms of someone else. Fast forward to present day wherein, Scarlet, now known as country singer Claire McClure, would join the Winston clan in Italy, a family get together organized, in effort, to bring Billy and Scarlet back together. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship between Billy and Scarlet, and the potential fall-out as secrets and lies threaten to tear them apart, once again.

Congressman Billy Winston is considering running for Tennessee state senator but struggles with a family history that could threaten everything and more. With his brother Roscoe recovering from an attack; and Billy recovering from donating bone-marrow, the family heads to Italy for Billy’s health, and to push together two people who haven’t stopped loving one another for close to twenty years.

The relationship between Scarlet and Billy is acrimonious and antagonistic. Years of secrets and lies have destroyed any semblance of a happily ever after; their love for one another hidden behind layers of heart break, pain, betrayal and mistrust. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters including all of the Winston siblings and their spouses, as well as Duane Winston’s in-laws Sheriff and Mrs. James.

BEARD NECESSITIES is a story of family, betrayal, secrets and lies; of revenge and hate; second chances and a happily ever after. Penny Reid pulls the Winston family together in an effort to reconcile estranged brothers, and lovers, and in doing so, reveals a complicated past between our leading couple. The premise is sensitive, inviting and engaging; the characters are sassy, dynamic and animated; the second chance romance is tender and emotional.

Strolling to the desk, I set down the milk and cookies, crossed my arms and turned to face my brother. “You’re pointing out that Scarlet and I will see each other during various family functions.”
“Correct.”
“And, therefore,” I continued reasonably, “I need to be nice to her.” I knew that already, and tonight—after watching her face crumple and feeling a part of my soul shrivel at the sight—I’d finally accepted it. I would be nice. I would be so damn nice. I’d be a saint.
But then Cletus said, “No, Billy. Not nice. Nice is for tea parties and doctor’s visits. You need to woo her.”
I blinked once. “Woo her.”
“That’s right. You need to woo the pants off her, hopefully literally, and then make that woman yours. Permanently. Once and for all. Put a ring on it. Woo is where it’s at. Jenn still has the centerpieces from our wedding if you’d like to borrow them.” During this enlightening monologue, he’d moseyed over and picked up the glass of milk and a cookie, dunked the cookie into the milk, and then took a bite just as he’d finished his listings of delusions.
“That’s never going to happen.”
“Why not? Those centerpieces are lovely. You don’t know your color scheme yet. Ask Scarlet before you decide.”
I ground my teeth. “Scarlet and I are never going to happen, Cletus.”
He shook his head firmly. “I’m disappointed in your lack of ambition, Billy. I thought we’d be on the same page. But I see now, I’m going to have to take a tough love approach.”
“Cletus—”
“I’m going to give you one chance,” he said, then pushed the rest of the cookie in his mouth and spoke around it as he continued, “One more chance is all you get. I’ve waited long enough for this and you know my feelings on delayed gratification.”
“Pardon?”
“It’s overrated.” He took a gulp of milk and picked up another cookie.
“No, Cletus. One chance on what?”
“I’m giving you one chance. One.” He pointed the cookie at me. “Tomorrow, you’re going to go find her, apologize to her for whatever that kerflufflefuck was I walked in on. Tell her you were suffering from temporary insanity, hopped up on illicit drugs, abducted by asshole probing aliens, whatever. I’m giving you one chance to make this right, and if you don’t take it, you are not going to like what happens next.”

“Do not think I won’t pick you up and throw you in my truck, head first and everything. I’m two seconds away.”
I stopped and stared at him.
Shit. He meant business. He was glaring at me with eyes that said, “Do not fucking fuck with me, you fucking twit.”
Well. Then.
I sighed. I’ll try reasoning instead. “You’re going to drive me to your house, and then I’ll pack whatever I need and call a cab to take me all the way back to where I’m paying rent. It’s not worth it. Just let me grab a cab now.”
A savage curse bit out, and then his eyes flashed.
His singular warning had been when he told me he was two seconds away. In a flash, he grabbed me, and I was airborne, right into the back of his truck. But he wasn’t done. He leapt up, grabbing the seatbelt over me, and pulled it around me, clicking it in place. He had the door shut, locked, and he was already going around the front before I could even push myself upright and then start to reach for my seatbelt.
By then, he was inside, the engine on, and he shoved off into traffic.
“This is stupid.”
“You’re right. You’re being stupid.” Cursing, he ducked down as a car sped past us. They knew he was driving because they came up on his driver’s side, their phones up and ready to go. It was a car full of teenage girls. “Dammit.”
“Where do you live?”
He opened his mouth, then caught himself. His eyes narrowed in the rearview mirror. “Why?”
I just smiled. “No reason.”
He continued to study me in between still watching the road, and with a soft growl, he shook his head. “I’m not buying it. What? You’re going to tell those girls who are trying to get a picture of me?”
“What’s the difference? I’ll know when you take me to your house. What’s stopping me from posting it on Twitter, or even posting your phone number?”
A litany of curses spewed from him, and the back of his neck was getting red. I was having a heyday with this. It was more fun than I could remember having in a long time.
Until he announced it, “I liked your mom.”
“What?”
“Your mom.” He moved into the far lane, settling back.
I was thinking we had a bit of drive from here, and he settled an arm back on the passenger seat headrest.
“I always liked her. She made me cookies and muffins. And I remember when she tried to teach us to bake cakes from scratch. You were horrible and your cakes tasted terrible, but we’d lie to you. Both of us.”
“You did not—” But I was remembering, and even I hadn’t wanted to taste my cakes.
A tug at my mouth. “She’d wear that ugly yellow apron. She hated that apron.”
“What? I loved that apron. Always felt like it was sunshine. Made me feel warm, even in the winter.”
I noted softly, “That’s why she wore it. For you.”
His eyes lifted to the rearview mirror, holding mine a second again. He swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing up and down. “Yeah.” His voice came out raspy. “She was a good woman, and a good mom. She was a good wife. I could always tell.”
I snorted. “Why? Because she wasn’t wasting away like yours?” Then, I winced. That sounded even bitchier to my own ears, more than I thought it would be. “Shit. I’m sorr—”
“Because you guys laughed.” He kept on talking about my family, ignoring what I’d so blatantly pointed out about his own, his face hard. “My parents laughed when they were drunk, and only when they had a party. When there were other people there to laugh with, never the two of them, never the three of us. I was their only kid. I wouldn’t have known better except I half grew up in your home, too, and what I remember the most about growing up was that you guys laughed.”
My throat burned.
“Yeah, we did.” I looked out the window. A hollow feeling starting to dig in my chest. “Until she died. We didn’t laugh much after that.”
“You laughed until then?”
I nodded. I felt the chinks in my armor widening.
I remembered how he did adore my mom. The two acted as if they were conspiring together during our baking lessons, and any time he was in the house. He congregated around her. She congregated closer to him.
“You’re the son she never had.” Then, feeling bad about my shot at his mom, “Your mom cooked for us. I remember that one time she tried to teach us to make lasagna.”
He cracked a grin, barking a laugh. “You sucked at that, too. I never knew lasagna noodles could come out hard like rocks until yours.”
Fuck him, but I was grinning. I couldn’t help myself.
Those were good times, good memories before the shit ones came. And they came soon after that lasagna disaster.
He quieted. “It wasn’t the same. My mom versus yours. We had baking lessons at your house once a month, every first Sunday. My mom tried to teach us how to make Caesar salad, the only second cooking session she gave us, and that one we all got fine. It’s hard to screw up.”
“Says you. You’re perfect at everything.”
He didn’t reply.
I didn’t expect him to. It was true. He knew it. I knew it. The entire nation knew it.
Then from him, “Not at being a friend.”
My stomach kicked.
Hell no. No way. He wasn’t getting back in. No fucking way.
“Oh. God.” I groaned, throwing a hand up to hit my forehead. “Can we not? Can we save the dramatics until I’m able to call a cab to take me back to my place? For real. Enough bonding or whatever it is we were just doing.”
He growled, “You are such a goddamn bitch.”
I retorted, “And you are such a goddamn prick. Drop me the fuck off!”
“With fucking pleasure!”
He gunned the engine, shooting forward in traffic, and weaving until we were nearing my exit. When he took it, I relaxed. The rest of the way was tense and silent, and I knew both of us couldn’t wait to be rid of the other. Then he pulled over to the curb. He didn’t make a move, his only action just unlocking the door.
His head was turned halfway to me, his jaw clenching over and over again.
Fine.
I shoved forward, my head only swimming a little bit as I climbed out of his truck. Once I shut the door and turned around, he’d already hit the engine, tearing away from the curb.
I only had the clothes on my back, on the side of the street, but I’d never been so fucking grateful to be away from him.
Now, turning to the house I wasn’t sure I was still invited to live in, I saw that all the lights were off. Lovely.

ABOUT THE BOOK : RELEASE DATE December 3, 2019

Professing her love to her best friend while wearing only her favorite panty set and coat probably wasn’t the best decision Amelia Carr has ever made. In fact, it’s perhaps the worst. But when her family becomes their overprotective selves while encroaching on her life, she makes a rash decision: her brother’s best friend will just have to be her beard. Too bad, he has no idea what he’s in for.

Tucker Reinhard loves women, and they tend to love him even more. Despite the love, he never would have expected Amelia to come up with the plan she poses to him. He’ll go along with it, but only because he doesn’t want to see her hurt—even if that means fighting his best friend.

In the midst of her scheme, Amelia realizes she doesn’t know Tucker as well as she thought. And neither of them are prepared for what happens when they let the façade go and see what truly lies beneath.

•••••••

REVIEW:Reckless With You begins with Amelia Carr finally getting up the nerve to tell her best friend, Tobey, that she’s in love with him and ready to take their relationship to the next level. However, once she reveals her feelings to him, things do not go as planned. Not only does he reject those feelings, he informs her that he’s been seeing someone and things that she’s ‘the one’. Mortified beyond belief, Amelia retreats, only to have her family step up to support her like they always do.

Tucker Reinhard has been a ‘family’ member of the Carrs since he was a kid and one of Amelia’s brothers, Devin, brought him into the fold. He finds himself as protective of Amelia as her brothers. He checks on her a few times, but when Amelia is surprised in a coffee shop by a guy whom her friends want to set her up with, she immediately goes on defense and proclaims she is seeing someone………none other than Tucker Reinhard. Once she tells him what she’s done, he agrees to be her fake boyfriend, even though they both know that lying to everyone is wrong.

It doesn’t take long for Amelia to question everything she’s ever thought she knew about love: did she really love Tobey? Because it doesn’t feel like it when the feelings she has for Tucker start seeping in. As for Tucker, he finds himself, for the first time in his life, wondering what it may actually be like to settle down and have a family of his own. However, when a woman from Tucker’s past reappears with jaw-dropping news, he does what he does best………..pushes people away, including Amelia.

Reckless With You is another nicely written story by Ryan. The characters are engaging and very well written. Amelia is a bit of a loose canon at times, but steadfast in her belief that love and family will get you through anything. Tucker had a hard start in life but hit the jackpot when he met Devin Carr. Even though he knew he wasn’t to blame for his past, he was bound and determined to not make the mistake of letting a real relationship with a woman put his sheltered heart at risk. However, once he realizes that what he’s been pushing away is exactly what he needs, your heart will swell with emotion. The chemistry between Amelia and Tucker is palpable, but what drew me in was the pure emotion between not only the two main characters, but the secondary characters as well. The world that Ryan has created in this series will leave you wishing you were a part of it and I can’t wait for the next one. Well done, Carrie Ann Ryan! Very, very well done!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 2, 2019

I might be a virgin, but I know what I want in bed. It’s just that I haven’t found him yet.

So I’m stunned when charming, laid-back Adam volunteers to work through my wish list. That’s when I discover the voracious, commanding man in him, my next door neighbor. And I’m enthralled — in and out of the bedroom.

Every night we explore my fantasies, and every morning I try harder not to want more from him. Because there’s no item on my list about falling for the guy. Besides, we agreed to the last item already — when we’re done we walk away.

But every fantasy unlocks another. Each hotter than the last. Until I discover there’s one last thing on my to-do list to check off. One so daring I can’t figure out how to ask him or what it might do to my heart…

REVIEW:THE VIRGIN GIFT is the second instalment in Lauren Blakely’s contemporary, adult THE GIFT erotic romance novella series. This is twenty-four year old boudoir photographer Nina, and Adam’s story.

Told from three first person perspectives (Nina, Adam and Brandon) THE VIRGIN GIFT follows the friends to lovers relationship between Nina and Adam. Nina is a virgin but wants what she sees in her boudoir clients-love, seduction, and a relationship but Nina has held on to her virginity after witnessing her sister’s struggles as a teenaged mother, and in doing so, has never found the love or a man with whom what wants to share. Enter neighbour and friend Adam, and the man with whom Nina will fall in love.

While his condo was being painted, Adam spent his nights at Nina’s apartment but found himself battling between head and heart when he discovers a ‘bucket list’ of sexual wishes written by our story line heroine. With his attraction already growing towards Nina, Adam offers to make all of Nina’s sexual desires come true.

THE VIRGIN GIFT is a quick, erotic read; a sexual journey between two friends who quickly discover that a sexual dalliance with a friend often leads to love and a happily ever after. The premise is hot and steamy ; the characters are flirty and sexy; the romance is erotic and passionate. There is no outside or personal conflict-our couple quickly realize that their relationship is so much more.

I broke the hold he had on my hip. I spun around and took a few steps backward to the kitchen counter, feeling naughty, daring. From a few feet away, I stared at my friend with new eyes, drinking in the cut of his jaw, the fire in his eyes, the expanse of his hard chest.

My eyes roamed over him. He was fully dressed, but fully revealed too. The outline of his arousal was visible through his pants. Thick and firm.

My mouth watered as I stared at the shape of it.

But tonight I wanted something else.

Something for me.

I didn’t need to start at the beginning of my list. The first three items set the tone. I’d cross them off as I worked through the others.

I knew where to start.

“Okay, then. Now that we’ve tackled the rules of engagement, I’d like to try number four, please.”

Alerted to the vanished party of strangers, homicide cop Mason Deniaud and search and rescue expert Callie Sutton must brave the brutal elements of the mountains to find them. But even Mason and Callie have no idea how precious time is. Because the clock is ticking, and one by one, the guests of Forest Shadow Lodge are being hunted. For them, surviving becomes part of a diabolical game.

REVIEW:IN THE DARK by Loreth Ann White is a contemporary, adult, stand alone, mystery thriller akin to Agatha Christie’s AND THEN THERE WERE NONE (aka Ten Little Indians).

Told from several third person and first person perspectives following two timelines, IN THE DARK follows homicide cop Mason Deniaud and search and rescue expert Callie Sutton as they are called into a potential crime scene where a plane and its’ ‘pilot’ have been found in the BC forest, a pilot with obvious signs of knife wounds in her neck. What ensues is the search for the truth, and the discovery that more than one person fell victim to a masterful game.

Loreth Anne White pulls the reader into a mystery thriller as we are up close and personal with a group of people who have been invited to the opening of a new high-end lodge and spa in the BC wilderness , a group of people connected by sins of the past. From a PI to a former police officer, to a doctor, a business woman and her husband, a former prostitute, a one-time newscaster, and an airline pilot, the fated group will slowly succumbed to a game of revenge and betrayal, secrets and lies. Having willingly walked into a trap, the guests become pawns and prey to a killer, and the wilderness alike.

IN THE DARK is a story of intrigue and mystery; of revenge and retribution; of secrets and lies; of circumstance and opportunity. The premise is entertaining, sensational, and electrifying ; the characters are numerous, dynamic, and fated to die.

“The gas stove and the gas water heaters work,” Nathan said. “And there’s plumbing.” He turned his back on them and busied himself taking mugs out of the cupboard in an exaggerated fashion. His heart hammered in his chest. Sweat prickled across his lip.“And there’s tea, coffee, tins of tuna, and soup,” Steven said as he hurriedly opened more cupboards.

Bart frowned. “Well, at least we won’t go hungry.” He made for the living area, paused. “I found a path. It looks like it leads around to the other bay, but it was getting too dark to follow without a flashlight.”

“Do you think it might lead to the real lodge?” Steven asked.

Nathan blinked. It was like the doctor was reaching for straws by asking—as if hoping, still, that their pilot had just made some terrible screwup with the GPS coordinates.

Bart said, “We can check again in the morning to see if—”

“There is no real lodge.” Jackie appeared in the doorway that led from the great room into the kitchen.

They all turned to look at the solid woman with intense eyes.

“This is no mistake,” she said curtly. “This is a con, some sick game.”

“What do you mean?” Bart asked.

“Did you guys not see the plaque outside, next to the front door? This place is called Forest Shadow Lodge. As in Forest Shadow Wilderness Resort & Spa. Here, look at this.” She pulled a brochure from her pocket and smoothed it out on the kitchen island.

“I printed it off the website before I left home.” She jabbed a photo of the luxury lodge. “It’s fake. It’s photoshopped, because it’s using the same location. See this bay here? And the shape of this one here? This mountain? This is how the terrain looked from the air. It’s this spot, but someone has photoshopped the spa into the location. They’ve erased parts of the forest, added cabins and trails, plus interior shots from some other spa and lodges.” She met their gazes. “This whole thing was faked from the get-go. We were lured here. All of us. And now we’re trapped.”

A sinister cold seemed to enter the kitchen. A shutter banged upstairs, and wind whistled. Mist, cloying and wet, pressed up against the windows. It grew darker inside.

“Why?” Bart asked, still holding his wood.

“God knows.” Jackie dragged her hand over her hair. “But right now, we’re stuck. We’ve been baited and lured into some weird kind of wilderness prison.”

“We are not trapped.” Stella entered the kitchen. “We have a plane. And you guys have a pilot—me. We have fuel. We—”

“We have no bloody radio!” Jackie snapped, whirling round to face Stella, her eyes furious.

“What?” said Steven.

“That’s right,” Jackie said. “Go on, tell them, Stella.”

Stella’s gray eyes flashed, shooting daggers at Jackie.

“Go on. Tell them. The radio is broken. Sabotaged, wires cut.”

“But I heard you speaking to your dispatch on the radio,” Nathan said.

“But it wasn’t working, was it, Stella?” Jackie said. “Your dispatch couldn’t hear you, could they? No one even knows where we are, do they?”

Stella’s features went tight.

“So when were you going to tell us this, Stella?” Steven asked.

“I didn’t want to say right away. Fear, worry, is not a good thing when—”

“When what? Jesus. Who are you to decide what’s right and wrong for us to know?” Steven barked. “You’re just the pilot, not the boss of our lives, for Chrissakes.”

“There’s a chance I could fix it in the morning. If I can—if it’s an easy fix—you’d never have to have known about it.”

“So you thought you’d play God?” Steven snapped. “Because we would all panic.” He wagged jazz hands at the sides of his face.

“And you’re not panicking?” she said.

Silence swelled in the kitchen. It felt for a bizarre moment as though the house was listening. Alive. Hostile. Nathan felt hairs rise along his arms. He was sensitive to these things. He could feel trees in the forest watching and listening to him.

1. You are very well known for your romantic suspense tales, but your new title, IN THE DARK, is all about mystery — a real whodunit! Tell us a bit about the story.

I like to think there is still a strong echo of my earlier romantic suspense books that ripples through IN THE DARK. Yes, it’s a locked-room mystery/thriller — wilderness style, but the mystery narrative is wrapped inside a romantic suspense-style narrative that follows a budding friendship between Detective Mason Deniaud and Search & Rescue manager Callie Sutton who must not only piece together what happened as they hunt for survivors, but also must race against time to save who might be left. The story leaves off with a promise of more ahead in the relationship between Callie and Mason, so my roots are still showing, I hope.

2. Your story definitely has shades of Agatha Christie as well as a nod or two to Stephen King. Did these authors act as inspirations for this book?

IN THE DARK is not only a homage to Agatha Christie’s AND THEN THERE WERE NONE, but Christie’s story becomes a plot device, a psychological tool that the villain uses to instill fear in the victims trapped in the lodge because the victims know what transpired in the book, and they anticipate the same will happen to them.

And yes, a teensy nod to master of atmosphere and horror, Stephen King’s THE SHINING where characters are trapped in a remote and snowbound hotel and become mercy to the psychological horror that descends on them.

3. A rural, isolated lodge is always a great place to start a suspenseful novel. How exactly did your characters all come to be at Forest Shadow Lodge?

The characters are invited for an all-expenses stay at the brand new, high-end, fly-in wilderness lodge and spa. They are lured by an offer to enjoy a ‘soft opening’, so to speak, where they can assess the accommodation and potentially negotiate lucrative contracts with the new lodge owners. Each guest runs a business that would be suitable for such an establishment. Each is excited by a possible lucrative contract. But not all is quite what meets the eye, of course.

4. Your story is told from multiple points-of-view as you take deep dives into the characters’ lives and histories. Does everyone have something to hide?

Don’t we all have something to hide? My characters in this book certainly do. Some of their secrets are more powerful than others.

5. Mason and Callie are two of the law enforcement responders that are trying to piece together exactly what happened at The Lodge. Tell us more about these characters and what makes them so good at what they do.

Mason Deniaud was a top homicide detective before relocating to the remote north for personal reasons. He lost a young son and a wife and he’s searching for a way to live, or exist, if not heal. Callie Sutton is a young mother who is single, but also isn’t because her husband lies in hospital and is brain dead. Her husband is there, but he also isn’t there for Callie and her young son. Like Mason, she’s in limbo, a place where she can’t move forward, or back. It’s through this they find a bond. And the search for the missing lodge party pushes them together.

6. IN THE DARK is a pivotal novel in your career. What does it have in common with your previous writing and how is it different? How does this inform your next steps as a writer?

Pivotal sounds cool. I’ll take it! Thank you. But yes IN THE DARK is a bit of a departure from my previous romantic suspense books. If readers enjoy it, however, and if my publisher remains happy, I’d like to keep growing in this direction. But I do think my crime stories will always revolve around strong women, or women who might be victims to start with, but who find agency and take back their lives and become strong and survive through the arc of a story. (As with my forthcoming work IN THE DEEP). I do love to include a relationship element in my crime novels, but bonding with a potential love interest comes out of the personal growth of the protagonist. I like to tell—and read—stories of women who find ways to rescue themselves.

Defending Everly (Mountain Mercenaries ) by Susan Stoker-a review

Defending Everly (Mountain Mercenaries #5) by Susan Stoker-a review

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca /Amazon.uk / B&N (paper) / Chapters Indigo (paper) /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date December 3, 2019

As tough as Everly Adams may be, the Colorado Springs SWAT officer is near a breaking point. Her fifteen-year-old half sister, Elise, has disappeared from Los Angeles without a trace, and the window to find her is closing fast. Committed to the search is Mountain Mercenary Kannon “Ball” Black. He and Everly already have a history—of rubbing each other the wrong way.

Still, Everly has to admit the man is heart-stopping. His brash alpha swagger takes her breath away. And most importantly, as a former Coast Guard first responder, Ball has what it takes to bring Elise home.

Nobody’s buying the LAPD’s “runaway” theory. And the fear that Elise is the victim of a human trafficking ring is a gut-punch that Everly and Ball can’t ignore. If only the trail were that clear cut. Because the one they’re following is more insidious and intimately dark than they could have imagined.

Now as the bond between Everly and Ball grows stronger, so does the heat. And as the stakes rise, so does the danger.

••••••••

REVIEW: DEFENDING EVERLY is the fifth instalment in Susan Stoker’s contemporary, adult MOUNTAIN MERCENARIES military, romantic suspense series focusing on a group of former soldiers and Navy SEALS who call themselves Mountain Mercenaries, headed by the mysterious ‘Rex’. This is forty year old, former Coast Guard officer Kannon ‘Ball’ Black, and thirty-four year old Colorado Springs SWAT officer Everly Adams’ story line. DEFENDING EVERLY can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous instalments is revealed where necessary.

Told from several third person perspectives including Everly and Ball DEFENDING EVERLY follows the search for Everly’s missing fifteen year old sister Elise. Elise Adams is deaf, and disappeared on her way home from her Los Angeles school for the hearing impaired, where she lived with her me-maw and pop, but not all was well in Elise’s life, and the young woman struggled for attention and love. With her sister missing, Everly Adams volunteers to work with the Colorado Mountain Mercenaries, a position that finds Everly coming face to face with a potential misogynistic partner. Enter former Coast Guard officer Kannon ‘Ball’ Black, and the man with whom Everly will fall in love. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Everly and Ball, and the potential fall-out as Everly is targeted, along with her sister, by a psychotic mind.

Kannon ‘Ball’ Black has been burned in the past, not only by a former girlfriend, but a female partner who threw our hero under the bus. With issues of trust, Ball battles between head and heart when ‘forced’ to work with SWAT police officer Everly Adams, as she desperately searches for her missing sister. Everly Adams struggles with Kannon Black’s attitude when they first met but Kannon’s need to profusely apologize finds Everly falling for the former Coast Guard officer.

The relationship between Ball and Everly is one of immediate attraction but Ball’s initial comments and reactions have raised Everly’s hackles. Our couple struggle to look past their initial introduction, a struggle that eventually finds Ball and Everly falling in love with the well-intentioned help of me-maw and pop. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The numerous secondary and supporting characters include computer guru and Navy SEAL Hunter ’Meat’ Snow; Grayson and Allye (Defending Allye #1), Ronan and Chloe (Defending Choe #2), Archer ‘Arrow’ and Morgan (Defending Morgan #3), Lowell ‘Black’ and Harlow (Defending Harlow #4) as well as the mysterious ‘Rex, the leader and handler of the Mountain Mercenaries. We are introduced to Everly’s sister Elise, their grandparents, Allison and Landen Adams, and Detective Diego Ramirez.

DEFENDING EVERLY is a story of family and friendships; desperation and revelations; camaraderie, drama, passion and suspense. The character driven premise is intriguing and edgy; the romance is tender and hopeful ; the characters are energetic, feisty, courageous and animated. Susan Stoker pulls the reader into an impassioned and intense story of rescue and love.
