To live in the light, they hunt in the dark…

Runa is used to mysteries. Fortunately, she’s skilled at using those things to her advantage. Until some truths about her past are revealed, and her world is shaken to its very core. Now, she has her sights set on finding and saving the family she’s never known. What wasn’t in her plans is the sexy, mysterious stranger who seems to find her over and over, taking her breath every time.

All his life, Brom knew he’d eventually have to find the Varroki and take his birthright. Then a witch lays out a nearly impossible choice before him, and Brom decides to follow his heart. The beautiful and enigmatic female he’s drawn to is more than captivating. She makes him want to reveal all his secrets. But doing so could be the difference between life and death—for both of them. Especially in the battle between good and evil where all of the relics of the First Witch are in play—and everyone has a hidden agenda.

REVIEW: EVERSPELL is the fifth instalment in Donna Grant’s THE KINDRED adult, paranormal, fantasy series set in the mythological world of magic, witches and warlocks, hunters and the Gira. This is Runa, and Brom’s story line. EVERSPELL can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

SOME BACKGROUND: Sybbyl, a powerful witch has set about to collect the bones of Thea, the first witch, bones said to give the owner immense power but along the way, Sybbyl has taken control of the Gira, and destroyed anyone and everyone who stands in her way.

Told from several third person perspectives including Brom and Runa EVERSPELL follows Runa, as she sets out on a journey of revenge and reprisal. Raised by her grandmother’s friend Morea, Runa will discover that the past is not what she was led to believe, and in this Runa is determined to exact retribution but our heroine has been tasked with taking down the rogue nymph like Giras, and her latest quarry reveals so much more than Runa could have imagined. Meanwhile. Brom, a warrior with his own secrets and hidden magic, is tasked with finding and aiding our heroine Runa, a task that finds Brom quickly falling in love. As Runa and Brom’s relationship fast tracks to love, Runa refuses Brom’s help on her mission, a mission she believes, she will never return. What ensues is the building relationship between Runa and Brom, and the potential fall-out as Runa takes a stand against a foe she is ill-prepared to battle.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including most of the previous story line couples-Leoma and Braith, Ravyn and Carac, Helena and Jarin, Synne and Lachlan . We are introduced to Malene and her consort Armir, as well as Runa’s grandmother Asrail.

Once again, EVERSPELL and the Kindred Series is infinitely and deliciously detailed with enchanted creatures including the nymph like tree creatures known as the Gira, water nymphs, snow nymphs, the Hunters, and the Varroki, a group of witches and warlocks who have battled the Coven since the First Witch died. The premise is captivating; the characters are colorful and magical; the romance is fated, passionate and intense.

ABOUT THE BOOK:Release Date- December 4, 2020

“I want you to find out who is responsible for ruining his life and I want them to pay for it.”

This is the desire of Latricia Jones as she hires Goff Langdon to investigate her son’s arrest for burglary, vandalism, and possibly hate crimes.

Langdon is a laid back, slacker detective, happy with his work, friends, and way of life in the town of Brunswick, Maine. To complement his income in Brunswick’s scarce private detective market, Langdon also owns and operates a mystery bookstore named after his trusted companion, Coffee Dog.

He was on the fast track to success. And then something happened.

Jamal Jones is an eighteen-year-old rising star attending a post-grad prep school in central Maine to bring his grades up so he can play college basketball at the D1 level. Then he is arrested for crimes that his mother knows he committed, but not why. She’s sure someone has put him up to it, the behavior so unlike him as to be unthinkable, especially since Jamal was on the verge of beginning a better life. Latricia wants Langdon to track down those responsible for her son’s sudden turn from grace, and she wants them to pay.

REVIEW:MAINELY FEAR is the second instalment in Matt Cost’s adult GOFF LANGDON MAINELY Mystery series focusing on thirty year old, part time private investigator and book store owner Goff Langdon. MAINELY FEAR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary. MAINELY FEAR advances the series approximately two years.

WARNING: Due to the nature of the story line content, there may be triggers for more sensitive readers.

Told from third person perspective MAINELY FEAR follows private investigator Goff Langdon when he is hired to look into the who, what and how a budding basketball star became involved in a series of violent home invasions following an ice storm that shut down the small town of Brunswick, Maine. Along with two other students connected to a prep-school for athletes struggling to get into a division one school, Jamal Jones finds himself facing imprisonment until his mother Latricia hires Goff Langdon to investigate but unbeknownst to Goff Langdon, he is about to step into a world of secrets and lies, discrimination, power and control. As Goff and his intrepid group of friends, amateur sleuths, and questionable members of law enforcement begin a investigation, someone takes aim at Goff Langdon, hitting way to close to home.

MAINELY FEAR is a powerful and gritty storyline with a cast of animated, quirky and spirited characters who place themselves in the direct line of fire for a friend whose investigative techniques are painfully amateur, helpless and misgiving. Not everyone will survive; lives are threatened, families are broken, and one vulnerable young man is pulled in too many directions, unprotected by the people in charge.

The Germination of an IDEA

Where do plots come from? More specifically, where do mystery plots come from?

For me, the inspiration for a book comes from the everyday world around me. It could be a news story, a conversation, or an event, and is usually followed by a what if? My second Mainely Mystery novel, “Mainely Fear”, just released at the beginning of this month, was sparked by an ice storm.

In 1998, Maine was devastated by a brutal ice storm. It began quietly enough, an early January rainstorm, but quickly turned to ice and sleet for four days. It coated lines and branches in its icy grip, weighing them down until they snapped under the weight. It was estimated that more than 60% of the population of Maine lost power. And then the temperature dropped into the single digits. Generators sold out. People were freezing. In reality, the people of Maine, aided by the rest of the country, bonded together and got through this horrific event, even though most people didn’t get power back for weeks, some longer.

I took the germination of this idea and asked, ‘what if people took advantage of this situation instead of lent a helping hand’? What a perfect time for abuse. What a perfect time to rob houses. People without power, without alarm systems, went to hotels, friends, relatives, leaving their homes behind like unlocked treasure troves to be plucked for profit. Of course, that idea grows as any child does, stumbling along and changing directions, until it reaches adulthood and is presented to the world in the form of a book.

Many things shape a book as it matures, but none so important as emotion. Things such as power, fear, and money. Passion carries a novel forward, driven by sex. This is the underlying current that pulses within every story, galvanizing the action forward. Passion, emotion, and sex change the course of the story, and the end result, is rarely the same as the inspiration that germinated the original idea.

The first in the series, “Mainely Power”, was kindled by a story on a local nuclear power plant, leading to the question, ‘what if a nuclear power plant was sabotaged’? The third Mainely Mystery, “Mainely Money”, coming out in March was based upon the blackmailing of a U.S. senator.

In my upcoming Clay Wolfe mystery series, the ideas came from the news story of a woman rubbing heroin on her babies gums to keep the teething child from crying, the mind trap that cults set, and genetic engineering of humans.

I also write historical novels and claim that history is the greatest story ever told. Events of the past are filled with fantastic stories just waiting to be told in the right way. Ideas float around past us all the time, each and every day, and it is up to writers to recognize their promise, reel them in, and nurture them to life on the pages.

It is less what the story is, and more how you tell the story, that matters.

REVIEW:HEART OF FIRE is the second instalment in the contemporary, adult BLOOD OF ZEUS paranormal, mythological, romantic suspense series co-authored by Meredith Wild and Angel Payne focusing on university student Kara Valari and professor Maximus Kane. HEART OF FIRE should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up after the event of book one BLOOD OF ZEUS.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Kara and Maximus) HEART OF FIRE follows in the aftermath of Maximus Kane’s discovery of his heritage, and the history of his mother’s relationship with a God among man. As the fall-out of Maximus’ relationship with his student Kara Valari comes under the scrutiny of the paparazzi, the students and the teaching staff, there is someone else determined to make Kara his own, no matter the cost or repercussions to everyone involved. What ensues is the ongoing relationship between Maximus and Kara, and the chaotic fall-out of betrayal, vengeance, obsession and lies.

Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of colorful and energetic secondary and supporting characters. We are introduced to Maximus’ best friend and fellow professor Jesse NOrth; Kara’s sister Kell, their mother Veronica Valari, their grandfather Giovani Valari, art collector Arden, Maximus’ mother Nancy Kane, his father, and the uncles he knew nothing about. We are introduced to Kara’s brother Jaden, and his best friend Rerek who is about to betray the man that he loves.

Like the first instalment BLOOD OF ZEUS, HEART OF FIRE is a story of family, secrets, power and gods; of mythological demons, angels, contracts and legends; of promises and love. The premise is captivating and heart breaking; the romance is passionate and emotional; the characters are energetic and determined. HEART OF FIRE ends on a cliff-hanger, you have been warned.

The Chelsea Girls by Fiona Davis-a review

The Chelsea Girls by Fiona Davis-a review

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 2019: Re-release December 2020

The bright lights of the theater district, the glamour and danger of 1950s New York, and the wild scene at the iconic Chelsea Hotel come together in a dazzling new novel about a twenty-year friendship that will irrevocably change two women’s lives–from the national bestselling author of The Dollhouse and The Address.

From the dramatic redbrick facade to the sweeping staircase dripping with art, the Chelsea Hotel has long been New York City’s creative oasis for the many artists, writers, musicians, actors, filmmakers, and poets who have called it home–a scene playwright Hazel Riley and actress Maxine Mead are determined to use to their advantage. Yet they soon discover that the greatest obstacle to putting up a show on Broadway has nothing to do with their art, and everything to do with politics. A Red Scare is sweeping across America, and Senator Joseph McCarthy has started a witch hunt for communists, with those in the entertainment industry in the crosshairs. As the pressure builds to name names, it is more than Hazel and Maxine’s Broadway dreams that may suffer as they grapple with the terrible consequences, but also their livelihood, their friendship, and even their freedom.

Spanning from the 1940s to the 1960s, The Chelsea Girls deftly pulls back the curtain on the desperate political pressures of McCarthyism, the complicated bonds of female friendship, and the siren call of the uninhibited Chelsea Hotel.

•••••

REVIEW:THE CHELSEA GIRLS by Fiona Davis is a stand alone, historical, women’s fiction storyline focusing on three women: actress Maxine Mead, struggling actress/playwright/director Hazel Riley, and New York’s iconic Chelsea Hotel, where the who’s who of entertainment and art, party and live.

Told from first person perspective (Maxine Mead) and third person (Hazel Riley), based loosely in fact, THE CHELSEA GIRLS covers approximately twenty-two years in the life of actress Maxine Mead, and struggling actress/playwright/director Hazel Riley. In 1945 Hazel Riley had the opportunity to join the USO tour in Europe where she would meet actress Maxine Mead, and young artist Floyd Jenkins. A tight friendship would develop but the end of the war separated the trio until five years later when Hazel’s play Wartime Sonata, based upon their experiences in Europe, would be picked up by a Broadway producer, bringing Maxine, Floyd and Hazel back together again but all was not well in the United States as Senator Joseph McCarthy started a hunt for Communists in America. Targeting the entertainment industry, creating the HUAC House Un-American Activities Committee in an effort to takedown those believed to be members of, and support the Communist Party, Hazel would soon discover that a wolf in sheep’s clothing was about to destroy everything and more.

The majority of the story line is set in Manhattan, New York and The Chelsea Hotel . Hazel’s play has been commissioned by a Broadway producer, and the arrival of Hollywood starlet Maxine Mead pushes the production onwards and up but opening night is a disaster, and the fall-out finds Hazel facing the HUAC trying to prove she is innocent, and defend the lives of the people she loves.

Fiona Davis blends fact with fiction in a story line sweeping in the grandeur of The Chelsea Hotel-the secrets, the parties, the artists, and the reality of McCarthyism, and the witch hunt for Communists in America. THE CHELSEA GIRLS is character driven, imaginative and wondrous story line that focuses on a period in time where lives were destroyed by accusation and innuendo without proof or evidence to the contrary.

But even as Boone proves he’s the kind of guy to meet her every need, she doesn’t trust him to stay when life gets hard . . .

Boone Sadler’s never been one to back down from a challenge. He’s determined to show the funny, sexy Ryn that the irresistible connection between them is worth exploring. Soon Boone realizes their romance is in danger of more than heartbreak — and to have any future together, they’ll have to put their trust in each other.

••••••

REVIEW: DREAM CHASER is the second instalment in Kristen Ashley’s contemporary, adult DREAM TEAM erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on a group of women, exotic dancers, who call themselves the Dream Team. This is exotic dancer Kathryn ‘ Ryn’ Jansen, and fixer / commando Boone Sadler’s story line. DREAM CHASER can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order for back story and cohesion as there is an on-going premise throughout. The DREAM TEAM series is a spin off from the author’s Rock Chick, Chaos and Dream Man series, and several characters cross-over for familiarity and cohesion.

NOTE: If you have not read book one DREAM MAKER there may be spoilers in my review.

Told from first person perspective (Ryn) and third person (Boone) following several different paths, DREAM CHASER follows in the weeks after the Dream Girls were abducted and subsequently rescued by the ‘commandos’, a group of former US soldiers who now worked domestic civilian contracts for Hawk Delgado, but in the months following the abduction, Ryn Jansen would find herself under the protection of commando Boone Sadler, a man she believes despises the ground upon which she walks. An invitation to a Dom/sub event finds sub Ryn Jansen facing her abductor, a man who is trying to prove that he is innocent of the accusations of killing a police officer, but a man who is also protective of our story line heroine. Another murder pulls Ryn into the spotlight as the commandos begin a search for a dirty cop, and Ryn becomes the target of betrayal and revenge. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Ryn and Boone, and the potential fall-out as the threats against our heroine increase, and Ryn struggles with Boone’s need to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love.

Meanwhile, Ryn’s dysfunctional family begins to implode as her brother Brian and his ex Angelica’s contentious relationship spills over into the lives of their children. As Ryn has been more of a mother to the children then their own parents, our heroine will be pushed from their lives when she refuses to continue to enable her alcoholic brother, and the mother he once loved.

Ryn Jansen wants to flip houses but two steps forward always results in one step back every time Brian or Angelica call looking for money or help. As a ‘sub’ in the BDSM life, Ryn is hoping to find someone who will give in to her needs but Ryn hasn’t had much luck when it comes to Doms or love. An independent and feisty heroine, Ryn is pulled in too many directions including falling for a man who may or may not be falling for her. Boone Sadler is a former US soldier, now working as a commando for Hawk Delgado, and a Dom in the BDSM lifestyle. Boone is not currently looking for a sub but finds a willing participant in Ryn Jansen, a woman who stirs something deep within our story line hero. The $ex scenes are intimate and erotic but I dislike the use of a certain four-letter word, often used for shock value more than anything else. The BDSM, Dom/sub premise is prevalent throughout the story but moderate to minimal in content and form, limited to a few light scenes, and not at all kinky or carnal.

Once again, there is a large ensemble cast of colorful and familiar, secondary and supporting characters including Hawk Delgado, Augustus Auggie Hero, Chaos MC members Joker and Hound; Mo and Lottie, Mag and Evie; Elvira, Axl, the Rock Chicks; the ‘Dream Team’ dancers, Pepper, Ava and Hattie; their boss Smithie, and security specialist and Smithie’s nephew Dorian; Mama Nana, and her security guard Jorge; and Cicso aka Brett Rappaport. We are introduced to Ryn’s mother, brother Brian, his ex Angelica, and their children Jethro and Portia, and Angelica’s mother Brenda; Boone’s parents Anne-Marie and Porter; Domme Corinne Morton; detectives Mueller and Bogart. Hattie and Axl’s story line is next in DREAM SPINNER.

DREAM CHASER is a story of family, relationships, betrayal and love. The premise is heart breaking and emotional; the romance is seductive and captivating; the characters are energetic, strong and charismatic.

With only two of the original Big Six Corporations still unaligned, one’s evil desire conceived a plot to take over the remaining two unaligned corporations. After years of plotting and planning, surgeries and the implantation of a voice synthesizer the doppelganger was ready to infiltrate the SME Corporation with the killing of its CEO.

Stone and Zhivago soon caught wind of the plot. While Stone and Zhivago were trying to reveal the doppelganger plot, The Earth Space Alliance built their first Starship to explore beyond the Earth’s Solar System. As they sped towards the outer limits of the Solar System at the speed of light, they were confronted by Senior Emanuel’s Starship from the Confederation of Planets. Will Stone and Zhivago be successful in their efforts to reveal the doppelganger? Will the Confederation of Planets be a friend or a foe?

REVIEW:ONE’S EVIL DESIRE is the fourth instalment in M. Short’s A SAGA OF DOGS OF WAR-A STORY OF MERCENARIES science fiction series set in a futuristic twenty-third century. I recommend reading the series in order for back story, history and cohesion as ONE’S EVIL DESIRE picks up shortly after the events of the previous story line.

SOME BACKGROUND: Approximately one hundred years earlier Earth suffered a cataclysm, and close to half of the Earth’s population escaped to Mars and its’ surrounding moons. Fast forward a century, and the governing Corporations are now resettling Earth with the people on Mars. Four regulating Corporations formed the Corporate Alliance, while the remaining two were driven from Earth because of their tyrannical rule.

Told from third person perspective following several intersecting pathways, ONE’S EVIL DESIRE covers approximately a twenty year span wherein the newly formed Confederation of Planets discovers the existence of a race of people who call themselves the Kapacaras, an early descendant of the people of Earth but all is not well as the Kapacara’s enemies, the Trajan and the Cnut, are readying for war in an effort to claim more of valuable space, and targeting the Confederation of Planets along with the Kapacarians. Forming their own alliance, the Confederation of Planets and the Kapacarians prepare for war, amassing a large fleet of spaceships and technology in defence of their area of space. War ensues several times, with new combatants at each battle but in the end the Confederation of Planets is victorious, once again.

ONE’S EVIL DESIRE reads like a serialized or episodic television program akin to Star Wars ™ and the numerous Star Trek ™ franchises with all of the familiar jargon from Earth’s twentieth and twenty-first century science-fiction/ speculative fiction movies and shows-the characters reference several of these programs and movies, including important battle strategies of WWII. There are a number of time-jumps throughout the story line from days to weeks, months and years, in an effort to explain how the Confederation was able to prepare for a war, years in the making.

I had a few issues that I want to address: From the outset, the reader is thrust into the story line without any preamble or introductory build up. There was more telling rather than showing, and in this the story reads like a script for a television series. The numerous characters and references to previous plotlines was a little confusing therefore I recommend reading the series in order. ONE’S EVIL DESIRE is awash in repetitive and redundant text whereby the characters often recapitulate instructions, directives, stories and scenarios when new visitors arrive without prior information. The individual characters, most of whom were introduced in the previous story lines, are identifiable via too many names, nicknames and aliases for the same character, often leading to confusion wherein I had to go back and forth several times throughout the story to ensure that I didn’t miss the introduction of someone new. There was also no marked delineation between different points of view-often, each successive paragraph would address or concern a different scenario, a different character, and a different timeline, all within a few sentences of one another.

ONE’S EVIL DESIRE is an interesting and entertaining story similar in presence and style to the Star Trek™ franchise. As I read, I imagined watching Star Trek Voyager or Deep Space Nine, in an effort to place myself into the story line action.

Young Women, the next generation’s readers of Science Fiction.

I started writing my science fiction series, A Saga of Dogs of War-A Story of Mercenaries, in the fall of 2019. Everything I read about writing a book always said you should write about what you know best, first. My first book was based on experiences as a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam at the ripe old age of 19 and my passion for science fiction. I wanted to write my books from a military point of view, but stay away from the horrors of war. I wanted to emphasis the honor of serving your country and the strong relationships developed in combat. That was the predominate theme in my first book Cry Havoc.

One day my daughter pointed out to me that there were no strong female roles in the book. She told me that if I want women to read my books, I needed to incorporate strong women role models. Young women do not want to read the old James T. Kirk style science fiction books. Young women want to read about strong women role models in science fiction now.
So, with my daughter’s advice in mind, my next book in the series The GRiM Clan introduced three strong women Carrie, Marge, and Madeline. These three characters, one a strong influencer in her family, the second a strong woman ascending to Territorial Governor and the third that rose up to lead a large Corporation where the first strong women role models in the series.

In my third book The Vendetta Against Vendetta a fourth strong woman role model, Elizbeth joined Carrie, Marge and Madeline. Elizabeth grew in the book to control another large corporation.

In my fourth book One’s Evil Desire Mia a Kapacarian and Senior Coritha a Corilian joined as the next generation of strong women role models. Mia would be the first woman of the Confederation of Planets to head their new Military Intelligence Department and Senior Coritha one of the first women to achieve Senior (Captain) on a battle class Starship.

In my fifth, not yet released, book Frontier Space Chronicles, the strong women characters increase with the introduction of Senior Cynthia an Earthling commanding one of the biggest Starships ever built, the Explorer Class Starship, Captain Alala of the Amazon Warrior Class and last but not least Queen Adria, Queen of the Helenistic Kingdoms. As the numbers on my book list increase so does the number of strong women role models.

I wanted to convey in my books that while women are different in many ways, they have the same mental ability as men. In some way women are even stronger than men.

This next generation of young women are seeing more and more strong women roles in science fiction movies which has seemed to draw their attention. If we want to bring these young women to join the readership of science fiction books, we need those strong women roles in our books.

My grandson, 13, reads my books and likes strong women roles as well. He says they remind him of his Grandmother and his Mom.

As a 19 year old CW2 helicopter combat pilot, M. Short served as an aircraft commander being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star and eleven Combat Air Medals while serving the U.S. Army in the Vietnam war. His passion for Science Fiction and his experiences in combat as a pilot gave him his inspiration for the series -A Saga of Dogs of War. A Mercenaries Story.

The series started with him first writing forty nine short stories that were later combined into his first book Cry Havoc. From those first short stories he was encouraged to continue his writing, which now consists of three books with many more on the horizon.

Jingle Hells, Jingle Hells, Jingle all the way...

They think they are safe.
Isn’t that sickening?
They are decorating for Christmas.
Twinkling lights. Wreaths. Mistletoe.
Laughter.
All that is missing is snow.
They are the idea of a perfect family, aren’t they?
I wonder how many of them are wishing for a Christmas miracle.
How many of them only want peace?
A night full of magic and wonder…
Well.
Not when I’m here.
It’s a beautiful time to be the Groundskeeper.
Turning miracles into nightmares. Merry Christmas.
Not.

REVIEW: A RUTHLESS CHRISTMAS is instalment 8.5 in KL Savage’s contemporary, adult RUTHLESS KINGS MC erotic, MC, romance series focusing on the members of the Ruthless Kings MC. A RUTHLESS CHRISTMAS can be read as a stand along but I recommend reading the series in order, or at least the previous three instalments as there is a continuous premise throughout

Told from several first person perspectives A RUTHLESS CHRISTMAS focuses on the few days before the Christmas holidays as the MC prepares for their annual celebration. While their family continues to grow with the discovery and appearance of blood relatives no one knew anything about, new relationships, and the rescue of several children from a suspected pedophile ring, the Ruthless Kings make plans together to select a Christmas tree but an enemy who refuses to let go, returns with a vengeance, and threatens to destroy them all. Once again, two of their members find themselves in the hands of a psychotic killer, while MC president struggles to hold it together for the woman he loves.

A RUTHLESS CHRISTMAS is an ensemble story line where Boomer returns with his Ruthless Kings NOLA MC, and the members pitch in to celebrate the Christmas holiday but vengeance returns in the form of the ‘Groundskeeper’ who is desperate enough to take his shot at the Queen.

There are moments of heart break and sorrow, happiness and fun. The fast paced premise is spirited and enjoyable; the playful banter between characters eases some of the more dramatic moments.

K.L. Savage decided they were tired of looking for the kind of books they wanted to read. They had an itch that needed to be scratched, and as every girl knows, nothing scratches better than an alpha.

They write about gritty, alpha males, sometimes their dark sides, and the women they love.
If you have the same itch, their alpha males should fix that.
