Her Secret, His SurpriseAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo

Description:
Since being disowned by her strict father, Cass Stone has spent her adulthood trying to prove him wrong. Her drive has led to more success than her family ever thought she’d achieve, and life is looking great. Not even an incredible and mysterious one night stand that leaves her a single mom can trip her up…until the father of her baby stumbles back into her life, as sexy and unreliable as ever.
Logan Alexander hasn’t forgotten the night he spent with Cass two years ago, but he never expects to end up undercover as her assistant. His job saves lives—like it should have saved his brother—and he can’t afford complications. It’s difficult enough to maintain his cover as a carefree wanderer when he realizes his attraction to Cass hasn’t faded…and then he meets Cass’s daughter

Review:

Her Secret, His Surprise by Paula Altenberg is a very nice contemporary romance. Altenburg has created two fabulous characters that make up a wonderful romantic couple. But if you expect, as in some romances, the couple to fall love and jump into bed on page two……well yes and no. LOL This is a sweet romance that builds throughout the book, as they are both different and hesitant. But sex was on the agenda in the beginning. 🙂

Cass Stone is our heroine, who is very independent, has a successful career, and living on her own; as her father disowned her in her late teenage years. While on a business trip, on her last night before flying home, she meets a hot hunky bartender, who totally turns her on.

Logan Alexander is the bartender, and what Cass doesn’t know, is that he is undercover agent working on a case in the same hotel. He too is attracted to the beautiful Cass. One night of glorious sex that neither one would forget, then each went back to their lives. Shortly after, Cass finds out she is pregnant, and tries to do the right thing to contact the man at the bar, but he doesn’t exist (since he was undercover).

Two years later, Logan is assigned another case of sabotage at the company Cass works for, with the perpetrator selling company secrets. Both Logan and Cass recognize each other and are shocked, but they manage to keep it private. What follows is a sweet romance of two people, who are different, and a child that will draw them together. Logan has his issues of commitment, and once he finds out Cass’s daughter Olivia is his, he has to come to terms if he is father material. Cass wants a normal life, with a father for her daughter, but she feels that Logan is not reliable nor ambitious (she doesn’t know about his normal undercover job). Will Logan get past his issues with commitment and stay with Cass and Olivia? What happens when Cass discovers Logan’s real job and that she was part of this investigation?

In between watching this romance build, we are part of this interesting sideline story of watching Logan try to trap the perpetrator. Paula Altenburg has done a wonderful job writing this story of a very nice sweet romance, an adorable child, a bit of mystery, and a wonderful couple that had great chemistry together. If you want a fast sweet read, I suggest you read Her Secret, His Surprise.

About the book:

He stole her job, and now she’s stealing his heart.Eve Doucette finally almost has it all. She’s free from her mistake of an ex-husband and just landed her dream job: project manager for a new City Hall and drafter of the final design. That is, until a handsome architect sweeps into town to commandeer her blueprints.Famous architect Matt Brison is unsatisfied with his mundane life in Toronto. So when the mayor of Halifax asks him to spearhead his City Hall project, Matt jumps at the opportunity. There’s just one problem: the feisty and beautiful project lead, Eve, who isn’t exactly thrilled about her new “coworker” hijacking her design.

But when the sparks begin to fly, they both find themselves falling for the colleague they shouldn’t want. And before they know it, their already shaky foundation might come crumbling down…

Review:

Desire by Design by Paula Altenburg begins with Eve having to handle a group of construction workers on the jobsite who are catcalling a pretty woman walking by.  To prove that kind of behavior is not acceptable, nor appealing, she sees a man walking towards the jobsite and does a catcall herself, hoping that the workers see the error in their ways.  One problem:  the guy she catcalls strolls into her office a short time later and just happens to be a world renowned architect who has been called in to revise the plans for the new city hall project she is overseeing.  Talk about awkward…………….

Eve is immediately defensive with the newcomer, Matt, and proceeds to ask who hired him for this particular project.  His reply:

“Bob Anderson approached me.”

“That would explain it”, she said.  “The mayor is a moron.”

“Maybe so.  But that moron is my uncle.”

Yep, awkward!!  LOL!!!  And, so begins their working relationship. Eve has worked hard to be accepted a field that is usually dominated by men, and thanks to Mayor Anderson, she feels that she more than has her work cut out for her with this guy with the GQ good looks and easy going nature.

Through a series of events, Eve and Matt end up spending a lot of their personal time together as well, and begin to grow closer.  Matt also realizes early on that Eve is scared of something, or someone, and becomes determined to try and keep her safe.  But Eve is determined to keep men at bay.  Her first marriage ended in disaster, albeit, short-lived, and she is in no hurry to go down that road again.  Oh, but what a road they travel.

Altenburg has written a wonderful story of building trust, establishing boundaries and finding love in the most unlikely of circumstances.  I love the way she built their relationship and didn’t rush them.  She let them have fun and laugh and I also love the fact that she wrote the story at Eve’s pace.  She was so unsure of herself and men in general and it was nice to see an author take her time with the heroine’s issues.  I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to more by Paula Altenburg.
