Review:

Golden in Death by J.D. Robb is the 50th book in her fantastic In-Death series, featuring our favorite couple in the literary world, Eve Dallas and Roarke.  I am a big fan of this series, having read every single book, including novellas.

The story starts with a bang, as we watch pediatrician Kent Abner, open a package that was delivered to his door. When he opened the package, a golden egg, which released a horrible airborne toxic that kills him immediately.  When the police arrive on the scene, they are fortunate that the toxic evaporated, allowing the hazmat team to investigate, and our heroine, Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her partner Detective Delia Peabody, who were called to the scene.  Eve and Peabody have to notify Abner’s husband of his death, and after talking to many, they are stumped as to why Abner was murdered, as he was a very popular doctor with no enemies.

Eve brings in many members of her team, as well as Mira and Morris to try and get more clues as to why and who would attempt this horrible crime.  Things change when a second person (a woman) is killed the same way, opening the golden egg chemical toxin and dying immediately.  It is then that Eve sees some small connection between the two deaths and the investigation turns to the school Abner’s husband works at, as well as the second victim’s husband; the murderer seems to be targeting the significant others.

What follows is Dallas, Peabody and Roarke investigating all the parties from around 8 years ago, who were involved in the school scandal.  Along the way, they meet some very unlikeable characters, as well as those suffered back in the day by those unlikeable people.  The clues will build up, as Eve’s gut leans her toward the suspects.  How can they prove who they are before they kill someone else?

What I also love about this series is seeing all the wonderful recurring characters that we have come to love, and Eve’s entire police team who help her along the way.  Of course, we love spending all that time with Peabody, Mira, McNab, Morris, Feeney, just to name a few.  It was great to see Louise and Charles again; and also got a kick out of Harvo.

Again, I will say I just love the relationship between Eve and Roarke, and in this book it was even better; showing a sweeter and more confident Eve, as she has fully realizes how much her love for Roarke makes her a happier and stronger person. They are so great together…… the best literary couple ever. 

Golden in Death was very exciting, intriguing, tense and even dark (when we watch the victim suffer the toxic death), but it was such a fantastic read; totally perfect for Robb’s 50th anniversary.  From start to finish, there was never a dull moment.  J.D. Robb once again gives us a fantastic addition to this wonderful series; which I hope she never stops writing.  This was so well written by Robb, and if you have not started this series…..What are you waiting for?

Review:

When You See Me by Lisa Gardner is the 11th book in her Detective D.D. Warren series.  I have not read the previous books in this series, but this read very well as a standalone.  I loved When You See Me and upon completing this book, I have to find time to go back and read this series.  All I can say is “WOW’, this was an intense, exciting and fantastic thriller that was nonstop action and I could not put the book down; not to mention it was so very well written by Lisa Gardner. 

The story starts off with a bang, as two hikers discover human bones, and when findings discover that the remains were approximately 15 years old, and could be another victim of deceased predator, Jacob Ness, a task force is sent to Appalachian Niche in Georgia.  The task force consists of previous heroines of Gardner’s other series; FBI Special Agent, Kimberly Quincy, who will lead the investigation.  Kimberly calls in Boston Detective DD Warren, and survivor, Flora Dane, who have been involved in other Ness cases.  Flora was imprisoned by Ness for a year, and ended up killing him, but she continues to have nightmares, 7 years later.  She uses her horrific experiences to work alongside DD to help solve other kidnappings. Keith, who is a computer guru and Flora’s friend, also helps.

When You See Me is a non-stop intense thriller from start to finish.  Just when the task force thinks they have everything, more bodies are discovered, and suspicions arise that these may not be the victims of Jacob Ness, as some of the findings are fresher; bringing in more forensic teams.  When a woman supposedly commits suicide, DD investigates with the sheriff, and she notices a young maid, who cannot talk and acts terrorized.  DD will try to question the maid, who plays a big part in this story, as she is haunted by the ‘bad monster’, and using her hands as clues, which will help DD will gather information from Bonita (the maid) that something sinister is going on in this small town.  DD, Kimberly, Flora and Keith, will protect the young girl, and work together to find out what is happening.

The last third of the book was so intense and exciting, as with Bonita’s help, they will find themselves all in dangerous situations against a madman, and surprise townsfolks who were determined to stop the FBI from discovering their secrets.  Both Kimberly, DD and Flora suffered attacks that had us worried if they would survive.  I held my breath through every twist and turn.

Lisa Gardner did such a fantastic job writing this fabulous thriller, and created some wonderful female heroines who had to step up to survive and resolve the murders. If you enjoy thrillers, suspense, mystery, and fantastic leading characters, look no further then When You See Me.   I need to be reading more of Lisa Gardner, and her fabulous heroines, D.D. Warren, Kimberly Quincy and Flora Dane.

Review:

Vendetta in Death by J.D. Robb is the 49th book in her wonderful In Death series.  I am a huge fan of this series, with our fantastic heroine Eve Dallas, and her awesome sexy husband, Roarke.  Forty Nine books later, not to mention novellas, I still cannot get enough of Eve and Roarke.

Vendetta in Death was an intense and exciting story, with a violent murderer called Lady Justice.  Eve is dispatched to the scene of a horribly mutilated body, and from there, she, Roarke and Peabody become enmeshed into a case that is not only violent, but also emotional, as the victims are not nice men.

The first victim, Nigel McEnroy was a wealthy respected businessman, who was devoted to his family; but behind the scenes he was a dark and evil man, who preyed on women, either women he hired for his company, or those he picked up in bars. Nigel would drug the women, and rape them, then he would blackmail them to keep it quiet.  The second victim left his wife for a younger woman, and stole the business from under her.  The third victim brutally beat his wife into submission, and though now divorced, she still felt threatened by him.  Most of these women belong to a private support group that enabled them to share amongst themselves their stories and get past the trauma they suffered.  Lady Justice was part of this group, taking it upon herself to secretly take vengeance against the men who tortured these women, by torturing, mutilating and murdering them.

Eve and Peabody begin their investigation by finding the names of the women in the support group, and to interview all of them.  Half way through, we can guess who the murderer is, but Eve needs to find proof, and time is of essence as now there are three murders, and another one may be near.  What follows is an exciting, intense and thrilling story line that will keep us glued to our seats, unable to put the book down.  It many ways this was a different type of story, with the evil men deserving justice, but not at this horribly violent manner.  Eve having spent many years coming to terms with her abusive childhood, does not allow herself to be sympathetic, despite the evil men. Eve always stands for the dead; she is determined to stop this murderer.

Again, I have to say I just love the relationship between Eve and Roarke, and in this book it was even better; they are so great together, with their love and banter…… the best literary couple ever.  I also love Peabody, who has come a long way to not only be the perfect partner, but also stepping up more.  It is always great to spend time with the fabulous recurring secondary characters in this series; Peabody, Nadine, Mavis, McNab, Baxter, Feeney, Trueheart and Morris.

Vendetta in Death was very exciting, emotional, as well as tense and even dark, but it was a fantastic read.  From start to finish, there was never a dull moment.  J.D. Robb once again gives us a fantastic addition to this wonderful series, which I hope keeps on rolling for many years to come.  This was so well written by Robb, and if you have not started this series…..What are you waiting for?

Review:

Stolen Things by R.H. Herron is a suspense thriller that was so very well written.  This is the debut novel for this author, and after reading this story, I will most definitely read her again. Stolen Things started with a bang, as we met our heroine, Laurie Ahmadi, immediately.  Laurie has worked as a 911 police dispatcher for 20 years (she is a former cop), and picks up a phone call that is every parent’s nightmare.  The person on the other end is her 16 year old daughter, Jojo, who is crying for help, not knowing where she is and just woke up from being drugged.  Laurie’s husband Omid (police chief) is the first to arrive on the scene with other members of his force, with Laurie not far behind. 

A dead body is discovered in a closet, and in another room of the house, an NFL player is woken from sleep, and immediately arrested.  Kevin (NFL player) remembers nothing, as he too may have been drugged, but the police do not believe him, and Laurie wants desperately to hurt him for what he did to her daughter.  Jojo will explain that Kevin is her friend, and he would never hurt her; but no one believes it.

With Jojo in hospital, being examined, Laurie confirms that Jojo was raped, and pushes herself into the investigation, despite Omid and other police officers try to stop her.  Jojo remembers that she went out with her friend Harper that night, and Harper is missing.  Once Jojo is released from the hospital, she is determined to help her mother investigate the case, as well as try to find Harper. 

What follows is an exciting, nonstop action packed story that kept me glued to my seat.  Jojo reveals some of her secret life;, helping Harper & Kevin working for the CapB activist movement (Citizens Against Police Brutality.  She begins to find out more information on the internet, as well as from phone messages on Harper’s phone, which may involve the police department.  This will force Laurie to secretly try to look into the police department records, causing havoc in the police station, and with Omid, who is in hospital after a heart attack.  With Harper missing, and Jojo insistence the Kevin is a good guy, Laurie begins to believe her, and focuses on the department.

To tell too much more would be spoilers, and throughout the who book, things change often.  There are a number of twists along the way, especially the last third of the book.  Stolen Things was so very well written by Heron, and does cover a number of topics: murder, rape, police brutality, politics, race, homosexuality, etc.

Stolen Things is a wonderful thriller, and great mystery that has you unable to put the book down.  I strongly suggest you read this debut novel by R.H. Herron.

Review:

Shades of Justice by Carolyn Arnold is the 9th book in her terrific Detective Madison Knight series.  I have been a fan of this series since the beginning, and as always, Carolyn Arnold never fails to give us an intense exciting murder mystery, not to mention her expertise in police procedurals.  I have said this a number of times; when it comes to police investigations & procedurals no one does it better than Arnold. 

Madison Knight, our heroine, is a tough detective, who will let nothing stand in her way to find the guilty. In Shades of Justice, Madison and her partner Terry are called to the scene of a double homicide at the house of the wealthy Malone family, who are also big supporters in Stiles and to the police department.  Lorene Malone, the family matriarch, is found murdered with a ‘John Doe’ at poolside.  When Madison tries to get information from family, she finds herself being stymied by her Sargent, who is determined to not ruffle feathers for the Malones.

Despite the Sargent’s constant interference, Madison works with her friends and team (Terry, Cynthia, Troy, etc), to work together to find the clues about the murder, which will have many twists and turns along the way.  There a quite a few suspects, which makes it very difficult to find clues, but never underestimate our intense and stubborn Madison Knight.

With being deeply immersed into solving this mystery, Madison is also involved in helping her friend Cynthia (medical examiner) prepare for her wedding, which is only a few days away.  I do enjoy Madison and Cynthia’s friendship, and the mishaps along the way that lightened things up.  I love that Madison was finally finding a true love in Troy, and hope this does become what our heroines needs..a perfect man in her life.  There is also another story line that seems to be leading more into future books; corrupt police officers and the threat that this will become a dangerous mission in her life. I will note two things I have mentioned before;  Madison’s partner, Terry still annoys me a lot, as I do not like him;  and the sargent was god awful.  With Madison so good at her job, I prefer that she had good people working with her.  But that is my sole opinion.

Rather than give spoilers, Shades of Justice was a great story, with lots of action, precise investigations, many suspects, blackmail, murder, revenge and a thrilling edge of your seat ride.  I could not put the book down; especially with new developments changing constantly.  This story was very exciting and well written.  If you enjoy mysteries, murder cops, police procedurals and a tough as nails cop, then you need to be reading this series.

Review:

Deadly Impulse by Carolyn Arnold is the 6th book in her Detective Madison Knight series. Once again Carolyn Arnold gives us another thriller, as Madison Knight is in the forefront of a mystifying murder mystery. What starts out as perhaps a simple case of the death of a 68 year old woman, who is found in a wheelchair in front of a hospital. But as we have come to learn, nothing is ever simple for Madison. The case will escalate into a couple more murders that somehow seem related. Do we have a serial killer on the loose?

When we left off in the previous book, Madison had survived being kidnapped by the Russian mob, and in Deadly Impulse, Madison tries to hide the fact that she has been having devastating flashbacks where her life hung by a thread. Trying to solve this complex mystery, with those obstacles makes it even more difficult for Madison. But nothing will ever stop Madison as she preservers despite all the twists and surprises that keep coming at her.

During the investigation, Madison works closely with her partner, Terry, who is anxiously awaiting the birth of his first child; her best friend, Cynthia; and her boyfriend, Troy. As I have mentioned before, for the most part Madison usually stands alone, with not a lot of support from management. Hopefully with the new female chief, this will begin to change, though I am still not a fan of her partner, Terry. In future books though, I do have a wish list. I would love to see Madison become more open, and trusting, with a loyal team behind her. I like what I see with her and Troy, as well as her friendship with Cynthia and hopefully the new chief.

This was an intense and exciting mystery from start to finish, which Arnold always gives us in each and every book in this series. As each new clue or finding is found, we become more stumped as to who is the killer. Very well done, Carolyn. If you enjoy murder mysteries, police procedural, a tough cop, then this series is a must for you.

Review:

Blue Baby by Carolyn Arnold is the 4th book in her Brandon Fisher FBI series. This is an excellent mystery thriller written so well by Arnold, which covers violent crimes, usually serial killers. I thought Blue Baby was the best book in this series.

Though Brandon Fisher is the series name, and he is more or less the narrator of this series, to me this is an ensemble storyline.   Jack is the leader of the investigative team that handles these violent crimes. Paige and Zach are part of the team, and we get to spend time with all of them.

This was an exciting story about a serial killer who leaves his female victims in a wedding dress, with full makeup and in the tub. We learn early on that the murderer envisions himself to be an angel who gives unhappy woman what they want…happiness in a better world.

The time frame between the two murders that were similar was a year apart, but when another murder happens quickly, the team must race against time before the murderer decides to act again. Jack, Brandon and the rest of the team split themselves to check with each victim to find any clues, and just when they think they are on the right track, they become stymied again.

To say too much more would be spoilers, but this was a tense, exciting adventure from start to finish, with a few twists along the way. I am not sure why, but frankly I am not a big fan of Brandon, though I do like the overall team. I actually like Paige better then Brandon. With that being said, this to me reads as an ensemble group of characters that work together to solve these difficult cases. If you like murder mysteries, serial killers, and a team that finds each of them with their own issues; then you will enjoy this series. Again, I must praise Carolyn Arnold for her knowledge of police procedures and her flawless writing.

Review:

Devoted in Death by J.D. Robb is the 41st book in her fabulous In Death Series. I have so much respect for J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts), that she can write 2 full length and one novella a year, and keep us totally waiting with abated breath for her next book. I have said this before, the best part of this series, are the characters we get to spend time with in each and every book. There is no better couple then Eve and Roarke, and the wonderful friends and team they have added on over the years. Some of the best, including Peabody, Summerset, McNab, Mira, Baxter, Truheart, Galahad, etc.

For those of you who have unfortunately not read this series, it takes place in the future, but still very much like modern times; though I am a big fan of the auto chef, and some of the other great gadgets. Since Eve Dallas is our heroine throughout the series, and she is a tough bad ass cop, this series is all about murder, violence, terrible villains, mystery and top notch exciting police work to find the killer before they kill any more victims. But most of all, In Death series is Eve and Roarke at their best working together in solving the crime, as well as in love. I can never get enough of them.

In Devoted in Death, we have two young wild and crazy killers, who use their horrific crimes to feed their sexual lust for each other. What started out accidently in the south, becomes a cross country trail of victims that leads to New York, and Eve Dallas. Eve, Peabody and her team work through nights trying to find clues, to find these deranged vicious killers and save the latest victim.

Ella-Loo and Darryl are the killers, who profess their undying love for each other, as they torture their victims, leading to wild sexual exploits. They think they are unstoppable, but they haven’t come across someone like Eve Dallas. I will not give spoilers, only to say this was a very exciting, nail biting adventure, not to mention angst at the killers who have no redeeming qualities.

Once again, J.D. Robb gives us another heart stopping thriller. In between all the dark, there is always the light that keeps us going. The love between Eve and Roarke, and Robb does escalate this even more in this book; the fun we laugh at when Eve is with Peabody, and the camaraderie she has with her great team. I love this series, it is one of my go to reads, as I will never miss a book in this series, and I pray this will never end. If you have not read this series, you are missing a wonderful series, best couple, and fantastic characters.
