REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

WOW! Another grand slam by Grace Burrowes. I really … REALLY enjoyed this historical romance. I love that Grace writes mature,” lived life a little and now much wiser” kind of characters. I think this is the big reason why her stories seems to flow so naturally and always before I know it, I am finished the book. The believability is front and centre as is the ability to feel sympathy and compassion. I always FEEL FEEL FEEL reading a Grace Burrowes book and I absolutely love that. I also adore that she always seems to write the perfect match for her often conflicted characters and somehow they always seem to break the mold and become one of a kind!

So clearly, yes, once again I am gushing at my fave historical romance author, but it is well deserved. Let’s “meet” why shall we??? WINK!

A little darker to start than her other books I have read, The Captive is the first book in her Captive Heart series. Set in London and France during the Napoleon war, we are introduced to Christian Severn, Duke of Mercia right away. Unfortunately, it is after he has been captured by the French and is being viciously tortured and reduced to nothing short of an animal. Once the war is over, Christian is released and finds his way back home as an close to complete broken man (both physically and psychologically). He also learns that he has lost his Duchess and heir but his daughter survives.

Gillian, Countess of Greendale is recently widowed and is quite pleased about it. After surviving her own abusive situation, she has taken responsibility towards her cousins daughter (that would be Christian’s late Duchess). When she learns that the Duke has survived his ordeal, she takes it upon herself to barge in and demand that he step up and be a proper papa to his ailing daughter Lucy. Completely taken with Gilly in the most refreshing manner, Christian insists that Gilly stay on to help him with his daughter and somehow … to help him heal.

These two turn out to be what the other didn’t know they needed. With revenge strong in his mind, Christian is resolved in righting the wrongs that were inflicted upon his person .. no matter the cost. Gilly begins to strip away all that hate that consumes Christian and it’s through small displays of consideration on the other’s behalf that these two form a bond and perhaps a healing love. However, for a true happy ending, Gilly must learn that marriage doesn’t mean being under a man’s hand/word, and Christian must learn that revenge can tear apart his new found happiness. If these two can jump these hurdles, they have the makings for happily ever after.

Another wonderful start to a new series Grace Burrowes and I must admit I am anxious to read the next one!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date April 22, 2014

CJ Tanner is the lead singer of an up and coming country band and standing over 6 feet tall with tight black jeans and his signature black cowboy hat, he draws attention every time he sets foot on stage. It was not until doing a radio station interview at Nashville, Tennessee’s top rated country music station WSIX when CJ meets Paden Thomas, the announcer who interviews him. During the course of the interview the sexual tension between them is palpable and just as Paden becomes saddened that the interview is coming to an end and she thinks she won’t see him again, CJ invites her to come watch his band play at Nashville’s popular downtown club called Cat’s Cradle. Almost immediately their relationship starts heating up but just as things start getting very sexy and passionate, a mysterious series of unexplainable and dangerous events start happening to both of them, leaving Paden suspicious that someone is trying to keep them apart. Feeling that their safety is in jeopardy, Paden tearfully has no other choice than to break up with CJ. Yet just as that mystery is finally solved and they are back in each others arms again, another unexpected evil turn of events puts Paden once more in harms way with potentially devastating consequences had CJ not shown up just in the nick of time to rescue her.

REVIEW

3.5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Country Love by Chelsea Dorsette is a short, fun, contemporary romance with bits of erotica/light BDSM scenes. It’s a great read for someone who wants to linger on a beach with a cocktail in hand, and get a little smutty/sweet fix. LOL Just over 100 pages, this story is packed full love, sex, stalker, freak man, danger, country singing and more of this and that.

Paden Thomas is a radio announcer who has landed her dream job. When her job enables her to interview CJ Tanner, lead singer to an up and coming country band Cat’s Cradle, little does she know her world is about to be turn upside down. Instant chemistry and sexual tension between our leading characters is apparent, and when CJ invites Paden to come out to one of their gigs they decide to act upon it. They are well matched inside and outside the bedroom and start to build something really special when a delusional female stalker believes that Paden needs to be pushed out of the picture … by any means necessary. Not only do we have a female stalker, one of Paden’s co-workers is close to snapping and Paden is his target. These two have many odds against them, but true love shall prevail!

Like I said above this was a quick read. I did find that there was way to much trying to be stuffed into so few pages, and the rush of that had the timing off a little. I love the build up between lead characters and this one fell short where that is concerned. This was also the reason why there was a touch of unbelievability . The sex scenes were amazing though, and it was easy to really like Paden and CJ. Loved the country music aspect of this book and the light flirtatious moments really made me smile!

Then, catastrophe strikes and Kendall’s life is once again altered. Can she and Johnnie have a future together or has their love been doomed from the beginning?

•••••••••••••••••••••••

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

If you’ve read my first combined review of the Death Dweller series, then you already know that this is a series NOT for the easily offended. For those that haven’t, I have to in good conscience state this straight up. This series is easily the most UN-PG series I have come across. There is strong descriptive violence, language, harsh situations, rape and heart ache. BUT, if you can handle all that .. there is an amazing group of bikers that you will fall in love with despite their rough edges, and old ladies that will make you laugh and tick you off all at the same time. This series take you THERE .. you know that icky but yummy place .. YA THAT!

We left smexy Johnnie “John Boy” Donovan one hot mess and happily for now with his recently proclaimed old lady Kendall Miller in the previous novel. Misdeeds by Kathryn Kelly is a continuation of their story and how they are trying to make it work. Revenge against Kendall’s ex “enemy club” boyfriend is still a priority for Johnnie and the Death Dwellers and our boys are going full on with mass destruction. In the midst of all that, Johnnie is trying to balance his relationship with Kendall (shining at moments and bombing at others), participate in club business, deal with family revelations and heal from a gunshot injury. In the meantime, Kendall is stirring the pot with Megan (the prez old lady), being selfish, manipulative .. of the list goes on! It’s a wonder that a man like Johnnie can stick with her. Revenge is served up indeed, and collateral damage is received, but I think we will see Johnnie and Kendall make it through. They grew together and separately in this book, leaving me hopeful for their future.

So much more happens here but I really wanted to focus the remainder of this review on Kathryn Kelly’s talent to make me LOVE HATE (yup you read that right) a heroine. Honestly, I really dislike Kendall. I think she is selfish, mean spirited and very immature. The things she said and did in this book made my blood boil .. but here is the thing… Kathryn Kelly also gave me moments of wanting to root for her and wishing she’d redeem herself. At times I felt like a ping pong ball, hating, liking, loving … UH I have never felt this strongly about ANY heroine I have ever read. She is a whole bag of damaged and I sympathized with her, but man I actually screamed at my ereader for her to smarten the you know what up. LOL

As an emotional reader, this series has hit my every button. I adore these bad ass bikers and their messed up seriously deviant and degenerate ways. We have been set up nicely for further stories and I am so excited for my next encounter with them! Again, an extremely raw read with lots to offend a reader, but man I love the shock and offensive experience because I get to experience something so intense and pure … as Christopher “Outlaw” would say. “It ain’t nothing but a thing!”

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Interview-Black

TRC: Hi Kathryn and welcome to The Reading Café. Congratulations of the success of your Death Dwellers MC series.

Kathryn: Thank you. It’s been quite a ride!

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Please tell us something about yourself?

Follow Kathryn Kelly: Goodreads / Blog / Facebook / Twitter

Kathryn: I’m a born and bred New Orleans girl and a diehard Saints fan. Most of my family no longer lives in New Orleans because of Hurricane Katrina. I was pretty aimless while I was in college because I really didn’t know what I wanted to do when I was supposed to focus on acquiring the tools for a “real” job. I say I like to have firm plans but I usually enjoy myself more with spur of the moment activities. I will taste almost any type of food at least once, except squid ink soup, puffer fish or any type of insects. I’ve thought about going to one of the gourmet insect tastings where there’s stuff like sauteed grubs, fried crickets, etc., but I haven’t been able to convince myself I’ll be able to eat anything, so that’ll be $150 wasted. I’m a very private person, so I keep my personal life separate. I love the French Quarter, Mardi Gras, and Saints games.

TRC: Who or what influenced your career in writing?

Kathryn: My mother has been the biggest influence on my writing career by always encouraging me to go after my dreams no matter how big or how small.

TRC: When not writing, what do you do to relax?

Kathryn: I read and I also watch the ID channel.

TRC: MISDEEDS is the fourth instalment and June 2014 release in your contemporary erotic motorcycle club series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Kathryn: Misdeeds continues the story of John “Johnnie” Donovan and Kendall Miller as they attempt to make a go of a relationship that didn’t start off on the best terms. Kendall is trying to cope with situations in every aspect of her life. The deaths of her mother and her sister. Her assault and self-image issues. The lost pocket of time she had while she was drugged and held prisoner. The loss of her career, which she felt was the only good thing about herself and she’d worked hard to achieve. Her impending motherhood and her feelings for Johnnie who seems so detached from her most of the time. After going through so much—and being rejected by her mother most of her life—she doesn’t trust anyone’s overtures of kindness or friendship. Because of this toxic combination, she makes decisions that will lead to some dire consequences.
Meanwhile, Johnnie is dealing with a lot himself and finds himself pitted against Christopher because Kendall and Megan can’t get along.

TRC: Like most MC series, your storylines are graphically and sexually violent. What do you say to the reader of romance who is reticent or reluctant to read your series?

Kathryn: That’s a tough one to answer because it depends on the reason(s) for their reticence. There’s no denying the violence in my books, but, at the core is the romance between the hero and heroine. They are gritty, raw, and, at times, dark, but there’s also an underlying message within each book.

TRC: MISBEHAVIOR is your September 2014 release. Will you please tell us something about the premise?

Kathryn: Misbehavior is Zoann and Val’s story and it starts two months after Misdeeds ended. The two of them have a lot to overcome, especially Zoann’s mistrust and Val isn’t the most patient or the most communicative one of the brothers. He sees how she treats everyone except bikers and he wants that from her, too. He’s going to realize how helpless and powerless she felt during her attack and will have to allow her some control in the relationship, which won’t be easy for a man like him. She trusted him enough once before to try for a relationship. Now, the stakes are higher because Val knows this is a make or break time for them. Will he be able to give her the lead in their relationship? Will she trust him just once more or will she walk away from him for good? Then, there’s the whole Christopher angle and the fact she feels he turned his back on her when she needed him most.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Kathryn: Before I answer that, I have to say when I released Misled, I hadn’t planned on writing anymore books about the MC. Christopher wouldn’t be denied so I had to write him and once I finished his story, I was really sad to write THE END. It was fun and exhilarating to know I could write an entire novel all by myself. Before I hit publish, though…I changed my mind several times. When I convinced myself to just do it that last time, I knew it was a ‘now or never’ moment. I’d been requesting reviews for two weeks, but when it came time to actually publish it, I was almost trembling. I wanted someone to see in Christopher what Meggie and I saw in him. When I began receiving requests to continue the series, it was such an easy decision because I was already so vested in the characters.

Now, in response to the original question, I have eight definite releases planned: Misled (#1), Misappropriate (#1.5), Misunderstood (#2), Misdeeds (#2.5), Misbehavior (#3), Misguided (#4), Misconduct (#5) and Misfit, which will be another novella either between books 3 and 4 or 4 and 5. Mistrust is questionable, since it would be about Dinah, and I’m not sure where her character is going.

TRC: Have you considered a spinoff concentrating on a rival MC club?

Kathryn: I’ve thought about doing a spinoff with the American Scorpions MC, which was Cee Cee’s club. However, I’m also getting ideas for a series about Ophelia’s band members. Ophelia is Christopher’s sister who will end up in a relationship with Stretch and Cash. So we’ll see.

TRC: Are any of the characters or the premise based in reality or a combination of reality and fiction?

Kathryn: The characters are a combination of reality and fiction.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular series?

Kathryn: I do most of my research on the MC lifestyle via non-fiction articles, books, and documentaries. We all have something we respond to, so the emotions I (try) to write in the books come easier than the situations concerning the MC brothers. I’m always concerned about how much of what I write will readers believe? Is Christopher bold enough to stake out someone’s house in broad daylight holding an assault weapon? Well, yes, and I’m sure readers familiar with the series know that? Will they be able to suspend disbelief about actually reading about him doing it? Suppose readers are familiar with the story of a real MC member who did something similar? Did I portray the scene accurately (but still fictitiously, if that makes sense) to those people who know about the real-life event and did I write it with believability for the readers who aren’t aware. I have to add the similarities between real life and my characters are purely coincidental because I research for accuracy with club rules (and make some up of my own), and the biker lifestyle.

TRC: What are your thoughts on writing a series and ending an instalment with a major cliff hanger?

Kathryn: I enjoy reading a series because the characters become like family to me. If there’s a long time between releases, I dislike books with cliffhangers. It is being used too often nowadays and it becomes frustrating to have to wait for answers to major plot lines in book after book. It’s one thing to have the option of reading previous books in a series to get all the backstory. It’s another thing to HAVE to read upcoming books to get to the HEA (or HFN sometimes) in a couple’s story.

Misunderstood ends on a cliffhanger. It completely drained me and I was actually falling into a depression researching human trafficking and suicide and the effects of drugs and alcohol on a developing fetus. I got to a point where I had to stop. See, I suffer with major depression and insomnia and the story just kicked my butt really good. I’d pushed the deadline back because I saw I needed more time to tie up all the loose ends. But the day I wrote the last chapter to Misunderstood, I didn’t realize Spoon hadn’t been taken care of. Yes, I said it. My major cliffhanger was completely unintended. A few days after Misunderstood came out someone called me and told me about a review pointing out a warning to readers that it ended on a cliffhanger. I had to go back and reread the last scene and I was like…well, I can’t put what I said but it was laced with epitaphs. I’d already discussed the possibility of Misdeeds because of the HFN Misdeeds ended on and how unhappy it made readers. As a reader, I know how it feels to be unhappy and disappointed with an ending and completely annoyed with a cliffhanger. I decided to rectify it, sooner rather than later. Now, I have to write like mad to catch up to where I want to be with Misbehavior.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Kathryn: The characters definitely direct the writing. I’ll give you Kendall as an example. Every time I attempted to steer her in a way I thought she should go, her character veered in another direction and reminded me the setbacks she suffered within Misunderstood and Misdeeds happened in a very short period of time. She, as the character, wasn’t ready to go in the direction I thought she should. I rewrote several scenes in the book and directed her character the way I thought she needed to go. The scenes never worked out. Kendall wasn’t an easy character to deal with and she was even harder to write.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Kathryn: I think writers must be willing to take risks with their characters and their storylines. Don’t water your writing down to have sympathetic characters because you think it’s the right thing to do. Characters should make readers either sympathize with them, understand them even if their actions and decisions aren’t the best, or detest them, plain and simple. Writers fail in pulling readers into the storyline along with their characters by not knowing their characters and telling us what’s going rather than showing us. A well-rounded character draws readers in because motivations are understood in every situation he or she may be in. If we don’t make a reader feel, see, hear, taste and experience a character’s world, then we’ve failed at our job.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Kathryn: Writer’s Block is indeed a very real phenomenon and hits me when I’m under the most pressure. I try to keep writing. Sometimes, your best writing comes on your worst days. I didn’t have much writer’s block with Misled, but every book since, I’ve experienced it. It’s frustrating and it’s frightening. My uppermost thought is suppose ideas never return. Was this book just a one-time thing? Well, now (knock on wood), four times. It isn’t a good feeling and I haven’t gotten used to it. I’ve learned to step back for a day or two and, then, force myself back to it. Even if I have to throw away everything I write at the end of the door.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Kathryn: Crystal Cuffley, who edits my books and designs the covers, my mother, a couple of beta reads, one of the writers I’m friends with, and a couple friends. Most of the time, I bounce the ideas around after I’ve already started or completed the first draft, the exception being Misdeeds. I bounced ideas around beforehand. The final copy is nothing near to any of the discussions.

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Kathryn: In writing: writing a big historical, hitting a bestseller list at least once, and connecting with more readers

Personally: losing about 30 more pounds and getting a clean bill of health. I can’t think of anything else other than saving up for another vehicle before the one I have leaves me stranded.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Kathryn: I don’t think many people know I have children, but I’m paranoid so I keep them off the radar most of the time.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Kathryn: I’m currently working on Val’s and Zoann’s story, Misbehavior.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Kathryn: Every reader is important to me. I definitely want to pull in new readers, but I don’t want to ignore the readers I already have. No writer will ever satisfy every reader every time. Unintentional cliffhangers are within my power to rectify, though.

REVIEW

Picking up right where Gilded Lily left off, we meet Lily at the hospital after her father has had a stroke. More confident in her own skin, Lily confronts her sister about ruining her relationship to Jack. When a bigger truth comes out, Lily decides to forgive her twin .. but not forget. She has to now focus on becoming an acting CEO to her father’s company. With the assist of Ben (a trusted high ranking employee of her dad’s), Lily starts to put in long hours. When Lily has a “chance” encounter with another hottie (Todd) she is beginning to feel on top of the world. Enter once again … Gustavo! Lily cannot seem to resist her hot Brazilian and once again indulges her fancy … although it is more fire than fancy .. LOL When a seemed deception once again come knocking, Lily does not hesitate and reacts quickly. We are left wondering what her future will hold!

Overall, this is an engaging series. The sex scenes are super HOT and I am all over loving Lily coming into her own and getting in touch with her inner tramp. I love that she is building her sexual confidence and that it is spilling over into her professional life. After deception she opted to fight back instead of pulling the “poor me” card .. hard not to respect that. I do find for such a short read there is much story crammed in and I would love to read some more back story on our lead characters. Some of the writing tended to be choppy at times and a little hurried but in saying that I was completely into the story and enjoyed the easy read. I will most certainly be interested in continuing this series and seeing where Vivian Winslow will be taking Lily!

HAPPY READING!

REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

I am REALLY enjoying this series. Hunger by B.L. Wilde is the second book of The Seductors series and it picks up pretty much right where the first left off which is great as I was uncertain where this series was heading at the end of the first book.

Just a quick recap. Jade is a top agent to an elite group of specialists called the Seductors. A Seductor is contracted out on daring and often dangerous assignments that usually involve special circumstances .. like getting close in order to seduce the target. A Seductor needs to beautiful, in incredible shape, intelligent, risky and engage in sexual activity without emotion while exuding whatever the target needs to believe to get the job done! Jade is considered the best of her field.

Jade was contracted out to steal nuclear weapon blue prints from Oliver in book one. While she completed her mission, she broke the first rule of a Seductor. She fell in love with her target. Placing the Seductors first, she is now in hiding after she disappeared out of Oliver’s life .. and he is not taking it kindly. Many months have passed, and Oliver is still actively searching for her, and getting too close for comfort.

When a rival Seductor (man this woman is a piece of work) has been contracted to steal more information from Oliver but is unable to get close, Jade must reappear back in the picture and once again get close to Oliver. Only this time, she has been promised by the Seductors a way to remain with Oliver forever. This time however, it is a different trust she needs from Oliver. As these two fall deeper into one another and the deception remains, you see glimpses of the real Jade surface and Oliver is adamant that this time … Jade will not disappear. Will the truth come out and will Jade be able to complete this mission with so much to lose, yet so much more to gain??

I love B.L. Wilde’s writing style. Honestly one page just melted into another and before I knew it, the book was read. I love that the story is not resolved but there was no major cliffhanger like there was in the first book. There is promise of a happy ending, but so much has to be achieved first. I am looking forward to the next book!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

“I heard you were back.” I groaned internally as Mario spoke from behind me in the laundry room a little later. “Did Miss S put you on lockdown again?” he mocked.
“You’re not funny, Mario.” I didn’t even look up at him as I continued to fold my clothes.
“I really thought I’d break you while you were cooped up in here. I was hoping you’d take your frustration out on me.” By the level of his voice, I could tell that he was right behind me. I turned around quickly, pushing his chest before he laid a finger on me.
“How many times do I have to tell you, this isn’t a game? I’m not fucking interested!” I seethed, barging past him. Mario grabbed my waist, trying to pull me toward him.
“Another few weeks and I would have had you. You wouldn’t be a Seductor if you weren’t addicted to sex like me. You’re only holding back because you don’t want to get attached. We’d be good together and you know it. I could give that sweet pussy of yours a real good beating if you just let go.” I lost it, slamming the heel of my shoe hard into his foot. Me get attached to Mario’s cock? I was wrong—this guy was hilarious. “Oww…you fucking bitch!” he yelled, hopping around while clutching his injured foot. I didn’t even try to hide my snigger as I walked past him. You deserved that, Mario!
I was still chuckling to myself when I bumped into Molly in the hallway.
“Sonia is ready to see you now.” She had a worried look on her face.
“What’s wrong?”
“Alicia came to get you.”
“She’s back? I thought she wasn’t due back for a progress report for another few weeks.” My mind was racing. Why the hell would Alicia come to get me? It didn’t make any sense; Sonia knew I hated her.
“Sonia wanted her back early. I’m not sure things are going too well with the mission.” Molly followed me back to my room. “What if your theory is right and Alicia has been with Oliver these last few months?” I dumped my clean clothes on my bed, trying to compose myself. I was making Molly paranoid now, and that wasn’t good.
“Why would Oliver become a target again? It doesn’t make any sense. You and Georgie have been telling me that for months.”
“I don’t know, but it all seems a little strange to me.”
“You’re really not helping. You’re supposed to say that I’ve gone crazy. Do you know how ridiculous this all sounds?” I threw my arms up in the air in frustration.
“Go and see Miss S and finally put your mind at rest. Georgie and I know it’s been eating away at you. You need answers, Jade.”
“I can’t hide anything from you two, can I?” I sighed, grabbing my phone. Molly was right—I couldn’t put it off any longer. I needed to find out what was going on.

Jade has worked as a Seductor in a secret organization for five years now. Her main job? To earn the trust of her targets and secure the object or information her company was hired to steal—by any means necessary. She’s damn good at it, too.

With five years left on her contract, she is handed an assignment that turns her world upside down.

Oliver Kirkham is the attractive, young CEO of Kirkham Industries, a weapons manufacturing company, and is currently in possession of some very important blueprints—blueprints that could change the way war, as we know it, works. He’s extremely focused and doesn’t have time to date, at least until he comes to the rescue of a shy but very alluring Jade Gibbs.

What happens when one night of passion turns into more? Will Jade allow her feelings for Oliver to get in the way of her mission? Or will she do what she was hired to do and secure the steal?

The Death Dweller Series by Kathryn Kelly-series review

The Death Dweller Series by Kathryn Kelly-series review

Death Dwellers Series

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

OK! Harder book review to write, simply because this is one of the grittiest motorcycle club (MC) series I have ever read. I do have to write a small disclaimer here as this is certainly the farthest from PG reading one can get. If you are squimish and/or sensitive (keep reading to find out what there is to be squimish about) in the least, take a pass on this series. If you are open to reading about harsh violence, rape, language, law breaking, controversial everything, hot biker dudes that are serious bad ass, tight brotherhood and a storyline that just keeps you page flipping or screen swiping, then you may want to check this out. I am a boundary pushing reader and appreciate an author who will lay it all out and not apologize for it. Well Kathryn Kelly does all of this in her Death Dwellers MC Series. I LOVE THIS RAW READ, will reread and anticipate future releases. My shock buttons were most assuredly pushed and while I am not by any means “in the know” of how MC clubs are truely ran, I would dare say this may be a little more accurate than some of the “rainbow glitter” versions out there (which BTW are quite a great read as well and ones I enjoy more than often).

Now I hope I haven’t scared you off, but there is a need to be honest. This series really rocked my world and the “WOW, the author went there!” factor was in the forefront.

The Death Dweller series by Kathryn Kelly is about the Death Dweller motorcycle club consisting of men and woman that live their lives according to a brotherhood and a code. Their lives are drenched in violence, they march to the beat of their own drum, live by their own laws, are in constant conflict, engage in drugs and alcohol and in the midst of it all, are hooking up with their future “old lady”.

DESCRIPTION-Release Date December 5, 2013

He deals in a world of violence, sex, drugs, and crudity. As president of the Death Dwellers’ MC, Christopher “Outlaw” Caldwell presides over a club in chaos after the death of their longtime president and his mentor, Joseph “Boss” Foy.

Megan Foy runs from her abusive stepfather, hoping for her daddy’s intervention to save her and get her terrified mother away before it’s too late. Only problem is, she soon discovers her beloved daddy is dead and the man who killed him is the man she’s falling in love with.

Warning: FOR MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY. CONTAINS PHYSICAL ABUSE, VIOLENCE, RAPE, AND EXCESSIVE PROFANITY.

REVIEW

Megan Foy has not lived a life most woman would brag about. She is the daughter of the former president of The Death Dwellers MC. While she has lived away from the club, she has been a victim of abuse by her stepfather. Finally pushed to leave her home, Megan goes to find her father for help. When she runs into the new president Christopher “Outlaw” Caldwell, she is stunned to discover that her father is dead. While there is chemistry between Megan and Outlaw, there are too many factors that prevent Outlaw from claiming Megan as his “old lady”. The biggest factor is that Outlaw is responsible for her father’s death. This doesn’t mean he isn’t claiming Megan every other way and keeping her close to his side. This is a tumultuous time for the club with war on the horizon and betrayal so large that one needs to concentrate on surviving before one can start living.

REVIEW

Well, once Outlaw decides to claim Megan it’s “all in” with the baby and the wedding. Megan is realizing how much her life has changed when she faces the challenges of being the The Death Dwellers presidents “old lady”, mother to the treasured “little man”, and trying to plan her wedding and get all her hard ass MC biker boys in tuxedos. On top of all this, her mother is acting like an idiot stick and Outlaws dad is back in town and trying to get rid of her. With the odds stacked against her, Megan rises up and shows her new family just what she is made of … rainbows and unicorns have no place here! LOL

WARNING: This isn’t an easy or light read. Please be advised. The way to Johnnie’s and Kendall’s resolution involves death, violence, destruction, a sexual assault scene and suicide.

REVIEW

Johnnie … SIGH! Yup he is the yummy biker. We met him in book 1 as he is Outlaws cousin, a member of the Death Dwellers, but he was raised educated, a more “proper” than his biker brothers. Although considered refined, he is still all bad biker. Now the VP, he is acting P when Megan and Outlaw are on their honeymoon and the quiet couple of weeks he was hoping for are nothing but a wish. You know what is about to hit the fan, and it all surrounds the mysterious woman that had offered to become the clubs lawyer. Kendall is the ex-girlfriend of an opposing club, and soon finds herself having to do things she wouldn’t dream of doing in order to save her sister. This means infiltrating the Death Dwellers and engaging the VP. Well while the flames are fanned between John and Kendall, a whole bunch of violence and trouble comes between them, leaving them with the doubt that things could ever work between them.

I really had trouble putting this series down. There are some serious LOL moments and the things that come out of these bikers mouths are at times nothing short of hilarious. There was also never a real HEA, more like HFN, but considering the lifestyle the HEA just wouldn’t fit. The sex is hot, the language crude and the grit REALLY GRITTY! Loved IT! 🙂

Reflection
Chrysalis Book 2
by Elene Sallinger
Genre: adult, erotic, romance
Release Date: May 6, 2014

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

I am use to reading gritty, in your face erotica/BDSM but these two books were a more heartfelt, in depth and an emotional read about damaged souls that meet and redirect each other on the path of loving recovery. I was kind of digging the softer aspect going on here. While there were most definitely scenes filled with BDSM/erotica, this wasn’t the focus on this series. There was such an emotional connect between our characters after each has lived a little personal hell, and reading the journey these characters travel to get to each other was endearing. If you have read my past reviews, you know I like my smut hot and dirty at times, but have to admit it’s refreshing to read a sweeter side to this genre.

The Chrysalis series by Elene Sallinger is classified as a contemporary erotica romance and a good start to those that are venturing into this genre. The relationships between our leads is complicated but simply beautiful. Our couple is against all odds but with some personal growth, pure honesty, a little humour and a cast of secondary characters, I enjoyed indulging in this read knowing there was a HEA in the horizon.

The much anticipated follow up to the award-winning ‘Awakening’ – a compelling novel of discovery and desire. Bridget Ross is a woman with a shameful secret. Despite a life full of success and close friends she denies herself her true desires in penance for the crimes she can’t take back. Connor Reynolds is a man without a purpose. His own tragic past prevents him from putting down roots and pursuing his dreams. Their paths collide forcing them to face the ultimate question … is their love worth fighting for?

REVIEW

When Bridget Ross and Connor Reynolds literally bash into one another, little did they know that their lives were about to take a massive change. Bridget has submissive needs but carries a emotional burden that leaves her unable to trust and always on the defense. Connor’s need to control is not working in his favour as he carries his own personal demons that have stunted his ability to pursue his love for art. Bridget is incredibly rude at first, but another chance encounter leads her to have coffee with Conner therefore opening the door to a relationship. Off we go on a push/pull storyline of two people who truly are perfectly matched but need to get their heads out of the ground and deal with their personal turmoil already! When they both begin to supply the needs of the other, they begin to trust. Trust however, opens a huge can of worms … but this trust can also heal and lead to happy and forever.

I found the second book was less sexual than the first. Don’t get me wrong, there is BDSM and some erotica to enjoy, but the focus was more on the building of the relationship. Again, both Awakening and Reflection were a great read. I connected with the characters, I rolled my eyes a few times and shook my head wishing they’d get out of their own way already. I was satisfied by the end of both books for sure. I would recommend this to anyone who may want a softer read of BDSM but still have some scorching moments!

No, Thank You: Rejection & Writing
by Elene Sallinger

“Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless and add what is specifically your own” – Bruce Lee

When most people think of rejection and writing, the likely connection is to publishing houses. An author submits their work and receives a resounding no thanks. This, however, is only one form of rejection that a writer must face during their career. Bad reviews and paltry sale are forms of rejection as well. An aspiring author must also prepare themselves for these hits to their writer’s ego.

Will You Publish Me?

The most commonly acknowledged form of rejection for a writer is the rejection of one’s work by a publishing house. After spending months, if not years, of one’s life shaping a story, a writer sends it off hoping for universal acceptance and subsequent publication. Sadly, this dream is the exception, not the rule. The average writer is more likely to have a story rejected – often multiple times – rather than published out of the gate.

It’s important to note that this rejection does not immediately translate to fault on the writer’s part. Yes, the story may need to be refined. And, yes, it may actually be a poorly written story. However, the acquisition process is highly subjective. A writer is at the mercy of the preferences of the editor and the publisher’s existing catalog. In other words, it may be that the story isn’t right for that publisher, not that the story isn’t worthy of publication. Hand-in-hand with this is the preference of the acquiring editor. As much as we all want to believe we are 100 percent objective, this isn’t so. Bias always exists and your story may not resonate with the editor leading them to reject it.

Many international bestsellers were rejected multiple times before finding the nirvana of fit and preference that launched their success. Twilight was rejected fourteen times. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was rejected twelve times before the insistence of the CEO’s eight-year-old daughter convinced him to take a minimal risk on the book. Dune was rejected twenty-three times. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was rejected 121 times. The list goes on. Finding a publisher is like finding your mate, the first person you date is rarely the one you marry.

They Don’t Like Me, They Really Don’t Like Me

Here is a basic fact all writers must embrace: you can’t please everyone, and the moment you try you cease to write anything interesting. When asked why they write, most writers will say it’s because they have stories to tell; they can do nothing else. However, this fails to answer why a writer shares their work. One can write indefinitely without ever sharing a single word. I believe that writers share their work, because at our deepest psychological level, we seek to move people emotionally.

Like with publishing, most of us only fantasize about this in a positive way. In our minds, our work resonates with readers leading to public acclaim and the universal praise of our story. In truth, no book goes without negative reviews. Even the classics, books now considered masterpieces, had their detractors. Publisher’s Weekly published an article, “The 13 Worst Reviews of Classic Books”, that I found hilarious because it was famous authors trashing books now considered classics. Reading it puts the whole bad review thing in perspective.

You got a bad review, so what! The very fact that a person was moved enough to write that review means you did your job, you sparked an emotional reaction. Shake the negativity off. Move on. Unless they are pointing out functional errors like poor proofing, continuity errors, and the like, ignore them. They have no meaning in the grand scheme of things. They represent one person’s individual opinion. Don’t make mountains out of molehills, and, above all else, don’t reply!

They’re Not Buying It

When a book doesn’t sell, or fails to sell in quantity, the immediate conclusion tends to be that the problem lies in the story. However, there is a fundamental difference between writing a book and selling a book. Clearly, writing a book is a function of plot, character development, etc. However, selling a book is a function of packaging and promotion with heavy emphasis on the former. All the promotion in the world won’t help a poorly packaged book.

If you’ve released a book and it’s just sitting there rotting, before scrapping the book consider your promotion efforts. Are you getting the word out effectively? If you can comfortably answer yes, or you make changes with no effect, you need to reevaluate how the book is packaged. By this, I mean the cover and the blurb. Test your blurb with friends and colleagues. Would they read that story? Once you’re satisfied with your blurb, consider changing the cover.

Graphic design, of which book cover design is a subset, is an art that is rooted in psychology. Typeface, color choice, and imagery all spark autonomic emotional reactions. A bad cover on a good book can impact sales dramatically. Always consider changing a book’s packaging before turning to the story itself.

In the end, the thing to remember is that rejection, in any form, is subjective. Once you eliminate the functional, or the technical from the publishing process, what you’re left with is strictly subjective opinion. What you do with that is up to you.

review

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

This is a harder review for me as One Lucky Night is an anthology written by five different authors and consists of five different stories. I tend to avoid anthologies as they usually are short stories weaved into a series and I’m rarely reading all the series that are involved. I decided to approach this anthology differently and not worry about whether any series were involved and just appreciate five short stories by authors I have never read before. I am some glad I did that, because this was a REALLY REALLY good collection.

We have one setting called Boston’s Brazen Head Pub that features all five stories. Unlucky in love, the patrons just may find that luck is changing when a mysterious individual decides to become a little busy body …. LOL

LUCKY BREAK by Aria Kane

After four years of no communication and heart break, Andrea (Andy) and Derek cross paths suddenly when Andy is called to the pub to fix an appliance. Well it doesn’t take long for sparks to ignite and unsaid emotions bubble to the surface. Derek is Andy’s brother’s best friend and has vowed to stay away from his sister. Easier said than done though when fate decides it’s time for these two to sort it out already! I have to say, problems that arise from lack of communication drive me bonkers, especially when it’s so avoidable. Four years have been wasted and these two stubborn, meant to be together souls, really need to get it together is they want a happy ending.

LUCKY STAR by Grace Teague

What happens when you are in love with your best friend but fearful of the “friend” card being played against you? Well Charlotte and Tommy are about to find out. They have been the closest of friends for some time now, but have decided it’s time to take a chance and spill their feelings in the hope that the other will feel the same. I am a sucker for a friends to lovers story and this one was heart warming and so beyond sweet. A little “oops” near the end of the story, but when something is meant to be, fate makes sure it happens.

A NEW TUNE by Ana Blaze

After taking a chance and being left heart broken, Holly has no interest in dating a musician .. again. After sharing a New Years Eve kiss with Cian (a musician that works at the pub), Holly is fearful of heart break once again. She builds up her walls and does all she can to push Cian away. I do love a persistent man and before Holly realizes it, she is being full on pursued. Cian isn’t messing around either … he wants Holly, and he’ll do whatever he can to break down those walls. Full of sweet endearing moments, this was a perfect love story.

LEXI’S CHANCE by Constance Phillips

Sean is a co-owner of the pub and takes his job seriously, knowing that sweet words and flirting gets the ladies through the front door, and coming back for more. When he begins to flirt with Lexi, he sees something very different about this woman and really wants to pursue her and see if they would make a good couple. A couple problems though, Sean doesn’t date his customers and Lexi thinks he is just a player. Lexi spends her days helping the needy and every Friday night she enjoys kicking back with her colleagues and having a couple of drinks. She is attracted to Sean but realizes that he flirts with all the girls, so she certainly isn’t anything special. If they both can stop long enough to realize that there is something pretty great between them, they just may have a chance at love.

DRINK OR DARE by Melinda Dozier

This one was my fave! Must be because it was full of sass. Killian is a co-owner of this pub. His heart and passion however are in becoming a paramedic and he is currently in school earning his degree. Rachel is one of Killian’s classmate and his competition in academics. Always trying to one up each other, they push the other to do better. Rachel attends a bachelorette party that just so happens to be hosted at the pub, and can’t believe it when she discovers Killian is one of it’s owners. Before we know it, these two are engaging in a heated game of drink or dare, once again trying to upstage the other. This time however, the line of friendly rivalry is crossed and before they know it, they are playing for keeps … of each other. This was soaked in humour and fun but the stakes were always high … good thing they both end up winning! LOL

Overall, a wonderful collection of stories. I do love when authors collaborate with each other and we get peeks of another story before or after they have happened. This was well done throughout the entire book. If you enjoy romance and need a quick fix, this is a great selection to add to your collection.

HAPPY READING! 🙂
