REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Know what I love about being a reviewer for this site?? Discovering authors that I likely would of never read, and providing amazing reviews for talent that should be bragged about. Well let me tell you, John A. Heldt is one of those authors. The Mirror is the 5th book in his time travelling series called The Northwest Passage and once again, I was blown away. The writing is crisp and refreshing, the mental images and emotions are clear and greatly felt. Pieces of real history come to life! There is a side of romance webbed within the story as well (I do love romance driven stories, and unless it’s non fiction, it has to have little something something going on for me to like it), BUT it wasn’t the romance that drew me in. John writes believability so well and that helps in this connection I feel with his characters and story line.

Okay .. so now that I have gushed like crazy, let’s get to the story! 😉

We start in 2020, at a country fair near Seattle. Twins Ginny and Katie (twin daughters of our previous time travelling couple Joel and Grace) have opted to have their fortunes read. After being warned that they are about to embark on an adventure of a lifetime, they check out the House of Mirrors. Next thing they know, it 1964 and they are faced with the reality of “Toto we are not in Kansas any more!”

Both girls are familiar with time travel, as their parents have spoken of their own experiences, so they decide to handle their situation logically. Realizing that they do have a way back after all, they decide to make the best of it and all that 1964 has to offer. Well before they know it, they are dealing with issues that are completely foreign to the rather liberal lives they live in 2020. Girl dress modestly, dating is a ritual, first and second base are a big deal, THE BEATLES (enough said there right?? LOL), Civil Rights movements, Vietnam and one topic that really stood out … interracial relationships.

Of course, no John A. Heldt book would be the same without running into a much younger family member that doesn’t realize they are actually interacting with great grand daughters (can you imagine??). The girls soon begin to understand that not only are times so very different, but there is a fine line that they must walk to make sure they do not mess with “the future” .. OR … “the past”!

The only crummy thing I am going to say is that this series ends here! I know it is ending for the right reason, and it is going out on a high note, but I dislike the feeling of saying good bye to a cast of characters that I really enjoyed reading about. There were many moments that I became emotionally invested in throughout this entire series. I do take heart and feel good that while all had ended quite nicely in this series, it is still on my shelf waiting for a rerun!

One of the best time travelling series I have ever read! Well done John! 🙂

HAPPY READING! 🙂

TRC: Hi John and welcome to The Reading Café.

We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Follow John: Goodreads / Website/Blog/ Twitter /

John HeldtJohn: I’m a reference librarian, a former journalist, and a married father of three who was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. When I’m not writing, I like to fish, brew craft beer, and go for long walks with my dog.

TRC: What or who influenced your foray into writing?

John: I began writing for enjoyment in the first grade and kept it up over the years, thanks in part to encouragement from teachers, editors, fellow reporters, and finally a college friend who began publishing novels three years ago. When I saw the possibilities of doing the same, I began work on The Mine and haven’t let up.

TRC: The Mirror is the latest release in your Northwest Passage time-travel series. Would you please tell us something about the premise of the series?

The MirrorJohn: If this series has a premise, it’s that people who travel to the time of their not-so-distant ancestors can make a mess of things if they’re not careful. All of the books are about choices and consequences and how each of us is shaped by the decisions we make. The protagonists in the series don’t alter the outcome of major historical events, but they do profoundly impact individual lives.

TRC: What is the premise of THE MIRROR?

John: I wrote The Mirror to answer lingering questions from The Mine and The Show, bring back a popular character from the first book, and end the series on a proper note. Though The Mirror is a new story, it is one that incorporates many of the themes and lessons of the books that preceded it.

TRC: Is The Mirror the final installment in the Northwest Passage series? If so, what plans do you have for your writing future?

John: The Mirror is the last book in the Northwest Passage series. I have already begun researching and outlining the first novel in the next series. Like the NWP books, the next set of novels will feature humor, romance, and modern protagonists who rediscover themselves and their ancestors in twentieth-century America.

TRC: Are any of the characters based in reality or a culmination of many different variables?

John: The characters in the NWP books are drawn from my own imagination.

TRC: Each storyline features a different leading couple. Can the books be read as stand-alones or are they interconnected?

Northwest Passage series

Click HERE for our review of THE SHOW / THE MINE.

Click HERE for our review of THE FIRE.

John: The Mine and The Journey are stand-alone novels. The Fire and The Mirror can be read alone, though they are probably best enjoyed as sequels. The Show is the one exception in the series. It is essentially The Mine, Part II. Despite their differences, the books have much in common – including themes, venues, and even characters. Joel Smith and his mother Cindy appear in each of the five works.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background, historical accuracy etc) did you encounter writing this particular story and series?

John: In researching and writing four of the five books, I relied heavily on outside sources. I was not around in 1910, 1918, and 1941 – and don’t remember much of 1964 – so I had to learn about those years through books, articles, web sites, and oral histories. The research wasn’t challenging, but it was time-consuming. I did very little research for The Journey. I lived in eastern Oregon as a teen in 1979 and 1980 and remember the place and time vividly.

TRC: If you could virtually cast the leading characters in this storyline, which models or actors best represents your ideal image?

John: The leading characters in The Mirror are blond nineteen-year-old twin sisters. Katherine Heigl and Kate Hudson at that age would have been perfect for the roles.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

John: I direct the characters at the beginning. But there is a point in every book where the characters develop their own voice and personality. When that happens, I turn the manuscript over to the characters and go with the flow.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen?

John: A good writer must put himself in the head of his characters. He must approach a scene as if he is experiencing it firsthand – and not viewing it from the standpoint of a detached and dispassionate observer. If you can’t laugh or cry to scenes in your own book, you can’t expect readers to.

TRC: Where do you believe writers fail in this endeavor?

John: They don’t invest themselves in their characters.

TRC: Writer’s block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

John: I go for a long walk. Fresh air is the best remedy for writer’s block.

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

John: When writing the first draft, I usually consult my wife. Later, I ask the opinions of beta readers.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

John: I have begun planning the first novel of the next series. It will be set in Galveston, Texas, in 1900.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

The Sinner's Club banner

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Those that are familiar with Kate Pearce’s House of Pleasure Series will likely recognize this brand new spin of series called The Sinners Club. Kate Pearce merges two of my favourite genres together (historical romance and erotica) and provides page after page of lords and ladies, rakes and spinsters, proper vs improper, a little mystery to solve and LOTS OF HOT SMUT!

I will tell you though, you will find detailed scenes of menage, a little taboo and some same sex, so if you like your erotica on the lighter side, this may not be for you. I happen to love the way Kate Pearce writes and I always anticipate her latest release knowing I am going to get a great story supported by some smokin’ … well you get the picture! LOL

Note: This book is about Jack Lennox who you met first in SIMPLY SCANDALOUS.

REVIEW

Well hi again Jack! 🙂

Jack Lennox was first introduced to us in Simply Scandalous (9th and final book of The House of Pleasure series). I was so pleased he was the lead in this new spin off. Jack returns to his ancestral home to properly claim his father’s earldom. However, he doesn’t expect to encounter his father’s beautiful young widow Mary Lennox … who just may be pregnant and full of secrets. Deciding to pose as his own secretary, Jack knows for certain that something is not quite right with this young lady and her live in brother. Determined to find the truth, Jack indulges in seducing both brother and sister. Jack also returns to “The Sinners Club” in hopes of finding out more information about Mary and where she came from.

The Sinners Club was founded by the Earl of Westbrook and his wife Faith many years back. It is a club that has been designed for members who serve the crown privately .. AKA, spies! If ever caught by the enemy, the crown will deny any existence of a spy therefore turning their backs on those that risk their lives daily. The Sinners Club provides a haven for these members and is a central safe place to hide, exchange information and indulge in some fancy!

As the truth begins to surface, and the layers peel back, Jack discovers not all is as it seems with regards to Mary and her brother. While deflecting danger after danger, Jack begins to realize that he has feelings for these two, and that revealing his own identity may be more harmful than first thought. With the help of good friends, Jack uncovers an awful truth and betrayal that can be the defining moment on whether he gets his chance at love.

A wonderful start to this series and I love that some of the House of Pleasure characters made cameo appearances. Katie Pearce writes one HOT INTRIGUING story and her style is recognizable by the first chapter. If you love the historical erotica, then this will be the book for you!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Different Kind of Knight

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 29, 2014

“Happily-ever-after isn’t guaranteed. Sometimes you have to fight for it.”

Through a twist of fate, Princess Gabrielle became First Knight of the King’s Elite Guard, a position always held by the second born male. She’s spent years proving to the Minsters of Faldaera she’s capable of leading the king’s Army.

When mythical creatures plague her kingdom, Rielle is sent to capture Captain Brody, the alleged culprit behind the attacks and the man who broke her heart four years ago.

Brody, Crown Prince of Delphine, is living in self-imposed exile, atoning for the sins of his father. But Fate has different plans for him. Tired, beaten down, and ready to give up on life, he is tossed into the path of the one person he would do anything for―Princess Gabrielle.

With a traitor in her ranks, and a mark on her head, Brody joins forces with Rielle, hoping to keep the woman he loves safe. Happily-ever-after is not guaranteed, and mythical creatures aren’t the only danger the couple face. As battles rage, Rielle has the chance to prove herself a capable leader, but will doing so cost her the love of her life?

REVIEW

4.5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Once again Mary Waibel writes a whimsical, mythical, spin on a fairytale kind of story. The colours and creatures that she creates in this world were so vivid in my mind and it totally enhanced my reading pleasure! She stands out from other authors in that respect and now when I pick up a book she has written I prep myself to go on fun, captivating ride! I love that! 🙂

Different Kind of Knight by Mary Waibel is the third book of her Princess of Valendria series. I will say you can read this book as a stand alone, but I am funny about reading things in order, and if you skip reading the first two books, you would be depriving yourself of a couple of great stories. So I encourage you to check them out first!

Our leading lady, Princess Gabrielle (Rielle) is so easy to adore. She is a strong, capable woman who sets her mind to a task and goes after it with gusto! As a woman given the opportunity to lead the king’s army, she has no choice but to appear confident while inside we see a little vulnerability. Now she must battle and balance that confidence and vulnerability because she is tasked to capture a man that has been accused of attacking the kingdom … oh and he just so happens to be the man that broke her heart years ago.

Captain Brody (also a prince) is living in self exile. Just as he thinks that he has had enough of this life, in comes Rielle to stir the nest of unsaid feelings and questions and perhaps relights that spark that makes Brody want to hang in there a little while longer. He is handsome and also strong but weary of exile, and dealing with his daddy issues. Having Rielle back in his life makes him step back and realize that there is light in his dark world.

As these two embark on a journey full of magic, creatures, betrayal, love, duty, personal conflict and one heck of a mystery, they realize they are so much better with the other around. They are a true compliment to one another, never holding the other back from being who they need to be. But those feelings still linger and before they can determine if they should move forward, they need to survive the fight of their lives.

If you like a colourful world, with a power couple and a little magic here and there, I strongly recommend Mary Waibel’s novels. She keeps them fairly clean (I like my novels a little grittier), but I have to admit it’s refreshing now and then to read a great story with no smut. LOL

HAPPY READING! 🙂

David

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO / The Book Depository

David Worthington, Viscount Fairly, has inherited a brothel he does not want, but hesitates to sell for fear his employees will not be treated well by the establishment’s next owner. He hits upon the idea of hiring Letty Banks, a courtesan currently without protector, to serve as madam, but soon finds himself attracted to her on more than just a physical level.

When serious harm befalls Letty as a function of her role at David’s brothel, he realizes he cannot continue to exploit a woman he cares for. He arranges a way for Letty to return to obscure respectability, and prepares to walk out of her life, only to find he cannot leave her undefended against the trouble bearing down from her past.

REVIEW

5 out of 5 for this reader folks! I know …. what a shocker huh?? LOL

Dear Grace, I adore you! Love Rachel (one of your biggest fans and one who is still waiting for you to mail me my own Lonely Lord .. I will even let you pick who … but DAVID would be a great choice!) WINK

David by Grace Burrowes is the 9th book of her Lonely Lords series and WOWSA! We’ve met David a few times in her past LL books and he was always a bit of a mystery. We were teased with his personality and I have to admit I was REALLY happy to start his book. David Worthington is the Viscount Fairly who absolutely loves his family, is trained as a physician although he doesn’t formally practise, is proper as needed but flies by the seat of his pants in a fairly jovial manner (underneath is a fair amount of complicated though), and has inherited a brothel that he is quite unsure what to do with.

Letty Banks is a known courtesan that just so happens to have had David’s ex brother in law as her last protector before he died. Now Letty is left to make it on her own and she is slowly drowning in poverty and starvation. When a close friend brings this knowledge to David’s attention, David makes contact and ends up offering Letty the position of Madam at his brothel. This idea may kill two birds with one stone (David can carry on his life without worrying about the running of his brothel and Letty gets to eat and live a little better), but creates a whole wack of possible trouble for the couple.

David cannot seem to stay away from Letty who he comes to find rather guarded for a supposed courtesan. Letty is suspicious of everyone and their intention and rightfully so as the story begins to unravel. When Davis is pretty much up front with her about his attraction towards her, Letty finds she really wants to lower her walls and let him in a little. She also believes lowering her walls makes her vulnerable and she has too much trouble from her past to be vulnerable.

These two are so meant for each other and you know you are reading a great story when you start it and before you know it you are more than half way through and you have missed what real life has been happening around you. LOL Most of Grace Burrowes books are like this and I am considering writing a Do Not Disturb reading Grace Burrowes sign for my bedroom door. David is a charmer but a “lay it all out, you can trust me” charmer. These two do really start with a beautiful friendship and I think it is that friendship that enables them to take the next few steps. Letty of so complex and multi layered and experiencing David peeling these layers back made my heart happy! Let me tell you though .. Letty peels David’s layers just as well!

Another great read. I don’t like to give away much of the story, but those that have read my reviews know that I am a HUGE historical romance fan. Only a choice few series go on my “MUST KEEP” shelf, and The Lonely Lords is absolutely one of them!

One last thing … 9 books in this series, released all in one year. That blows my mind and one would think the quality would suffer. NO WAY did quality suffer here. Just goes to show how talented of an author we have here when ALL my reviews in this series have rated 5 out of 5.

Escape and Longing

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

WOWSA … that was some delicious smut. I’ll be honest, not too much character development or plot, in Escape as this book is primarily a collection of short stories, but her book Longing most assuredly had character development and a plot. I’ll also say, if you are in the mood for some straight up hot reading, Chelsea Dorsette is your kind of author.

Both Longing and Escape (two different books that have nothing to do with the other) are quick reads that deliver tingles in all the right places. Chelsea gets right to the point in her writing, and is very creative with her sex scenes. I really appreciate a creative side in an erotica author because let’s face it, how many different ways can a sex scene be written without boring the reader?!

For those that have boundaries, I will tell you that there are BDSM elements, one night stands, sexting, graphic language, lots of dirty talk and so much more. If you are not comfortable with that kind of reading then you most definitely need to take a pass. If you like a hot and dirty story, then read on! LOL

DESCRIPTION

What starts as an innocent Facebook flirtation between Doug in New Hampshire and Tracy in Maine, ends up turning into a steamy romance. After a month of naughty sexting and erotic Skyping, Doug and Tracy finally get to meet in person, and that’s when the sparks really start to fly! Tracy gets taken to new heights of sexual pleasure and exploration as Doug introduces her to spanking and sex toys, while satisfying his sexual appetites with her in many unique positions and locations. But just when things couldn’t get more sexy between them, they are faced with a threat that could break them apart…forever.

REVIEW

Our leading lady Tracy receives a Facebook friend request from our leading guy Doug. Doug claims they know each other from school many years ago, and Tracy admits to herself that she is most certainly curious. Soon enough emails are exchanged back and forth which then escalates to phone chatting and exchanging of some naughty pics. They indulge in dirty talk and then agree that it’s time to meet in person!

The fires have already been stoked for the past month, so it’s no surprise that when they finally meet, we have an explosion of sorts. As each encounter begins to get more and more intense (these two love to play), and our couple begins to engage in every day life together, these two come to realize that they have much more than sexual chemistry in common. Will physical distance keep these two apart, or will they do all they can to give this relationship a true go?

REVIEW

I REALLY enjoyed this novella. Better yet, a collection of short steamy stories. This is a set of the naughtiest fantasies coming true. Not so conventional and definitely HOT! Our characters have encounters in hotels, counter tops, limos … etc. I can’t choose a fave as they all brought something yummy and different to the table, but if you asked me which one stood out the most, I would have to say “The Limo”! One sexy female executive has one sexual encounter with two fellow sexy male executives in the back of a limo. SMOKIN’ HOT!

Each short story brings something a little different and I love that Chelsea mixes it up! A little menage, BDSM, voyeurism etc … this collection of stories is a keeper!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 24, 2014

After consolidating his gains against the enemy English, King Robert the Bruce of Scotland sends his best soldiers to fortify the lawless borders. These legendary warriors of the Highland Guard let nothing come before king and country – except the calling of their heart.

Of all Bruce’s elite warriors, Robert “Raider” Boyd is the most formidable. A true patriot whose bare hands are a deadly weapon, Robbie is the fierce enforcer of the Guard, and his hatred of the English has been honed to a razor-sharp edge. But vengeance proves bittersweet when his enemy’s beautiful sister falls into his hands and he finds himself fighting temptation – a battle he badly wants to lose.

Lady Rosalin Clifford barely recognizes the rebel prisoner she saved from execution six years ago. Though her girlish ideals for fairness have matured into a passion for justice, Rosalin believes she betrayed her brother when she helped this dangerous man escape. Now her traitorous act has come back to haunt her. But she can’t deny the longing this tormented warrior ignites in her, or deny the passion that turns sworn enemies into lovers. Is the gentle love of a true English Rose enough to free Scotland’s most brutal warrior from a path of vengeance – before it’s too late?

REVIEW
5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Man oh man. Monica McCarty knocks it out of the park once again, and goes on to prove she is my fave highland romance author of all time. This series is INCREDIBLE! Raider … OH RAIDER! SWOON and SLAP!!!!!

The Raider by Monica McCarty is the 8th book in her Highland Guard series. This series chronicles the war that waged Robert the Bruce against the English in the 1300’s and the elite special ops team called “The Highland Guard” that assisted in establishing Scottish independance . While some of these characters and battles are real historical facts and figures, the way Monica weaves a story full of fiction and romance is brilliant.

Robert Boyd (aka Raider) is about as patriotic and hard core as it gets. He hates the English with a passion that constantly drives him to conquer. He is known for his hand to hand combat, hard nature, supreme strength and many shake at the thought of facing him. One English Lord however (Lord Clifford), seems to consistently cross his path and has become his ultimate enemy. When the English play dirty, Raider finds himself captive with some of his fellow men. Certain to be hanged, it comes as a shock when a sweet English lass helps him escape his chains and assists in his freedom. Captivated by the kindness of the English beauty, Raider can never forget the kindness she showed nor the lingering kiss they shared.

Lady Rosalin Clifford is the epitome of kind, sweet and trusting. She is also the sister of Lord Clifford, and the once young lady who assisted the highland monster to escape. She now lives with a heavy heart, understanding she assisted in saving a man who has butchered her people, but troubled that she feels no regret in her actions. She dreams of this prisoner constantly.

Once again, Rosalin and Raider reunite when she is abducted with her nephew by the Guard members. Intent on using her nephew as collateral to force Lord Clifford into a peace treaty, Rosalin begs Raider to show her the kindness she once showed him and let them go. Years of battle have hardened Raider’s heart though, and his patriotic duty must come before his morals and virtue. Through much adventure, Raider and Rosalin once again begin to see beauty in the other. Rosalin continues to show trust and kindness consistently despite Raider’s constant degrading of her people. Raider battles his heart, unable to accept that he is falling in love with his enemies sister, and is certain there is no future.

This book was fabo! Full of action, intrigue, love, push and pull, anticipation, frustrations and smiles and some smexy scenes! I love it when a book makes me feel so much! I tell you though, Raider was really starting to tick me off and I would of loved to kick his rear end. Rosalin gave him chance after chance, integrated herself in the highland environment, and even felt empathy and compassion for the Highlander’s that have been oppressed by her people. Seriously the woman was somewhat of a saint. She was lovable and incredible and when she comes to the end of the tolerance level, it was hard to feel bad for Raider.

So .. will love be enough to over come years of battle? Is it possible for an English lass and a Highland Hero to put aside their differences long enough to understand that there is more to gain than there is to lose?? Flip that page! 😉

HAPPY READING! 🙂

The Jewels of the Ton Series by Shana Galen-reviews

Jewels of the Ton

5 of out 5 for this reader folks!

I have to say, Shana Galen is moving up my list of fave “go to”, “must read” historical romance authors. I read her Lord and Lady Spy Series a while back and fell in love with her writing style and her story telling. Well once again, she blew me away with her Jewels of the Ton Series. Each novel was jammed full of adventure, mystery, danger, intrigue, one hot couple finding their way to each other, horrific villains and a secondary cast of characters that rounded out the storyline perfectly. You DO need to read this series in order as one story melts into the next, and so you can enjoy the anticipation of the storyline for the next novel. Do not deprive yourself of that experience as Shana is incredible at building the next story for her readers!

So before I go into the reviews I will give you a bit of a back story that pertains to all three! Our leading ladies of each book are acting as courtesans (they are not truly courtesans but ladies just trying to make the best out of crummy circumstances), they are also nicknamed “The Diamonds” for their beauty, charm and mystery. Juliette is nicknamed the Duchess of Dalliance and has the cream of the nobility at her beck and call. It’s disruptive to have the duke who is the biggest catch on the Marriage Mart scaring her other suitors away. Then she discovers William’s darkest secret and decides what he needs in his life is the kind of excitement only she can provide…

REVIEW

Juliette is out first “Diamond” and nicknamed the “Duchess of Dalliance”. Extremely beautiful, she is desired by many. When she finds herself in a situation that crosses paths with the Duke of Pelham, little does she know her entire life is about to change. William, the Duke of Pelham, is a rigid, punctual and as stoic as it gets. In my opinion he has one huge pickle up his rear end. He is NEVER apologetic, he is sharp with his honesty, not caring for the emotions of others, and he lives his life without spontaneity and by a pocket watch. He believes the Dukedom excludes him from common rules.

When Juliette finds herself witness to the murder of the Duke’s fiancée, she seeks Pelham out despite her dislike of the man to tell him of what she witnessed and to request protection (the murderer knows she saw him). At first he doesn’t believe her. Then clues begin to point in the direction of Juliette’s story. By then, Pelham has already had his structured world completely upended by this famous “courtesan”. When Juliette discovers why Pelham is so rigid, she decides to knock his walls of armour down one by one and introduce a little bit of crazy, wild fun. When the murderer gets too close, it is then that Pelham must decide if his reputation as a hard natured Duke is too much to lose to keep this beautiful fun natured scandalous lady safe and in his life. Will Juliette even consider being his forever?

To Warrick’s shock, Fallon is not who he thinks she is, and the secrets she’s keeping are exactly what make her his heart’s desire..

REVIEW

Warrick Fitzhugh is a spy. He is also cast out of his privileged family for the choices he has made in his life. When he discovers that one of “The Diamonds” has a past that links her to a man he seeks, he believes seducing the lady will be all that is required to get the information he desperately requires. Little does he know that this “Diamond” is a tough as nails.

Fallon is considered the “Marchioness of Mystery” for good reason. No one knows where she came from. However, once they take in her beauty, her past doesn’t seem important. While Warrick appreciates and savours her beauty, as a spy for the crown he is set on revealing all of Fallon’s dark secrets to get to the man that is threatening the lives of many. As Fallon participates in one grand adventure after another with Warrick, she begins to trust him (as he begins to trust her) and a love soon blooms. Will a man that once again craves to be a member of a prominent family risk it all for a supposed “courtesan”? Will it be too late and will her life be spared?

She Wants Him…
She Wants Him Not…

Lily Dawson, dubbed the Countess of Charm by the Prince Regent himself, plays the role of the courtesan flawlessly while her real purpose is spying in the service of the Crown. Her mission now is to seduce a duke to test his true loyalties. She’ll do it, even though the man she really wants is Andrew Booth-Payne, Earl of Darlington—the duke’s son.

Andrew is furious when he finds himself rivaling his father for Lily’s attention. When he uncovers Lily’s mission, Andrew is faced with impossible choices. It seems he is destined to betray either his family, his country, or the longings of his own heart…

REVIEW

Then there was Lily. SHE IS MY FAVE! Considered the third “Diamond” of the ton, Lily is nicknamed “The Countess of Charm”. Not as beautiful as Juliette or Fallon, Lily decides her speciality will be charm. She can charm her way through anything, and this time she need to charm a disgusting Duke that seems to be on a rather indulgent journey after losing his wife. Oh I forget to mention …. Lily is also one of the few female spies working for the crown, and the Duke is suspect of treason. Lily just needs the proof.

Andrew, Earl of Darlington, is horrified at his father’s behaviour. He is also ticked off at Lily for trying to invade his father’s life. At first, Andrew believes she is just after the title, but as time passes he begins to realize there is so much more to this understated beauty. Unaware that Lily has loved him for years (he was always drooling over Juliette), Andrew begins to see Lily as a woman and not “like a sister”. Wanting to do all he can to help makes things right, Andrew conspires with Lily to uncover secrets that could ruin his father. With danger all around them, they could not begin to realize that the most damaging danger is between the two of them and involves their bodies and hearts. Will they reveal all the secrets and live through all this destruction? Will they be able to believe that their love can conquer all?

I know I was quite vague in my descriptions of secrets and danger, love etc … and I have done this on purpose. There are so many amazing twists and turns in this series that I could not even dream of ruining it for anyone. It is what made these books so good! Shana Galen really does provide all in her novels. I loved experiencing our couples fight for their love, steaming up the pages, and denying the other only to finally give in. When you add a great back story full of adventure, humour, loveable and despicable characters, you have the makings of a 5 star read!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

REVIEW

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Before writing this review, I have to say that I am confused why this author receives lower ratings for her historical romance novels. This is the second book I have read by Jane Ashford, and I happen to really enjoy not just her writing style, but her capacity to create a realistic couple in a historical setting. Jane Ashford writes more of a conservative historical romance (no bodice ripping here), and while I love me some bodice ripping, I find this sweeter more flowery style quite refreshing. I truly fell in love with the characters of this story and appreciated all the quirks and traits that make them so special. So if you pass by this author because of lower ratings else where, you are going to miss out on a great story.

On with the actual review now … LOL

The Bride Insists by Jane Ashford is a sweet historical romance that centres around a man and a woman bringing more wealth (and not just the cha-ching variety) to each others lives. Clare Greenough is a bored governess, just living her life day to day with no future really planned. Wake up, deal with spoiled brats, go to bed. Day in, day out! When she learns that she has come into a large inheritance, her life changes. She quits her governess position, hires herself a companion named Selina (an motherly older lady) and sets out to “husband seek” in a most unconventional way for the times. Clare requires a husband to free her from the clutches of a real jerk of a cousin who has control over her inheritance until she marries, but also a husband that will agree to allow her to maintain her own finances (unheard of during this time).

Jamie Boleigh is the seventh Baron of Trehearth and in the midst of utter ruin. He lost his parents at a young age, inherited a title and an estate that was in absolute dire straits and became a father figure to his baby twin sisters. Unable to procure funds to save his estate and the village, he resigns to the idea of bankruptcy. Enter Clare, and suddenly things begin to turn around. Jamie signs the paperwork stating that Clare may have financial control, but believes that with time she will relinquish control to Jamie. OH BOY!

While the estate is being turned around, Jamie is quite captivated by his bride, and soon passion of the marital kind engulfs them. Clare also has taken his twin sisters who have become quite the hooligans while neglected by their older brother, in hand. However, Clare insists that Jamie honour the contract and allow her to control her finances. Well feeling rather “unmanned” this soon enough becomes a problem between them.

Through all this, we have a secondary couple in the making, and a two young ladies that made me chuckle and laugh throughout this story. This book flowed naturally from one page into another and I was captivated and eager to find out what would happen next! So again, a sweet historical romance that one can enjoy over a hot cup of happy and a warm blanket! Most assuredly a warm and fuzzy read!

HAPPY READING! 🙂
