REVIEW
5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

OH MY HEART STRINGS .. man they weren’t just pulled .. they were yanked!

I remember you Theresa Rizzo.  The last book I reviewed for you left me an absolute wreck and ball of mush, and WHAMO .. you just did it again!  You can tell a great story and captivate a reader, but what I love the most .. I felt this story could be real.  No imaginary world, imaginary place but a collection of words about a situation that surely is controversial and that someone somewhere has faced!  I really enjoy that aspect of this book.

So without many spoilers …..

Jenny Harrison is living a happy life married to a great man and then just like that *SNAPS* everything changes.  Her husband Gabe was in a horrific accident and is now classified “brain dead”.  Jenny faces the decision to pull the plug.  Another topic surfaces as well … donation of organs.  Devastated, Jenny grieves hard and although it was decided earlier by the married couple to not have children, Jenny wishes to retrieve her husbands sperm and have a piece of him with her always.  Does she have the right to this??  Clearly, Gabe cannot give his consent nor did he fill out any paperwork that identified his opinion on donation of organs.  Does this decision then go to Jenny as his spouse?  Before we know it Jenny is thrown into the fight of her life as Gabe’s family members oppose her wishes and will do all they can to prevent Jenny from conceiving his child.

Steve Grant is Jenny’s best friend and an attorney.  He agrees to help her any way he can with this fight despite his own feelings on the topic.  He also has secretly been in love with Jenny (she doesn’t know this) since they became neighbours but respected her marital status.  Now Steve faces his own uncertainty of his future and how to, if to progress with Jenny.

This story flourishes and blooms in the court room.  Theresa must of done some serious research on this topic, because all the views, be it moral, ethics, law, emotion etc.. were well represented.  So much so in fact that I found myself feeling like a tennis ball being exchanged from side to side.  Never once did I feel I had a stern opinion on one particular side but more of an understanding of how both sides perhaps felt.  Some characters were blatant ^%%(*)_(* and the methods/threats used to try and sway the other were cruel.  Jenny herself annoyed me at times as well.

Truely an incredible story that came to life and knocked me on my rear end.  There was no clear cut solution and after reading this I still feel undecided on how I felt on the topic.  I do know however, that I now have an empty tissue pack that was almost full when I started this book.

Well done Theresa Rizzo, you cut deep and to the quick and because of that, you are memorable!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

At twenty-seven years of age, her son is in dire need of a wife.

Grace Wagner needs a husband by July in order to inherit the trust her father has left for her. With the aid of his new glasses, he spies Grace from across the room and they share a dance. Grace decides to present him with a business proposition that will satisfy them both. REVIEW
5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

BECKY BECKY BECKY (claps hands together).  You did it again.  That was an awesome read!  May I ask how you knew that I have a thing for guys with glasses?  Your book dedication to men who wear glasses had me hooked right away!  LOL I settled in knowing I was going to enjoy this journey!

Blinded by Grace is the 5th book in Becky Lower’s Cotillion Ball Series and it did not disappoint.  First of all, let me tell you that the Fitzpatrick family (one by one they are receiving their own stories in this series) is so easy to love.  We are consistently experiencing through each of her books some of the younger characters growing up, meeting up with past characters and getting juicy tidbits of how life has treated them, being introduced to perhaps new characters, and enjoying the knowledge that Charlotte Fitzpatrick (AKA Mama Bear) is still meddling and making beautiful things happen for her children!

Halwyn Fitzpatrick has until this novel avoided his mother’s meddling to find him a bride.  His time however has come to an end and he is resigned, that this season, he has no choice.  After receiving a brand new pair of spectacles, he is finally able to enjoy the “viewing perks” of the ton.  While attending a ball, he makes eye contact with Grace Wagner.  Grace was a childhood friend to Halwyn’s sisters, but he is a bit taken back to see she is no longer a child, but an attractive woman.  After dancing and chatting, Halwyn begins to think something is very off with Grace and her family.

Grace is most definitely in a pickle.  Her father is deceased and her mother remarried a horrible fortune hunter named Simon.  Grace is close to receive her father’s trust fund, but only if she marries by her 21st birthday.  Her step-father is doing all he can to prevent this from happening because if Grace remains single, then the money goes to her mom, which then goes to him.  He is an awful man and the way he goes about preventing Grace’s happiness is truely heart breaking.  Grace realizes the life she faces should Simon get his way, so she approaches Halwyn, proposes a plan that will help not only her situation but will assist in get Mama Bear off Halwyn’s back.  MARRIAGE!

The ground work has been laid out, but emotions find their way of messing around and throwing a well intended and thought through plan off course.  Perhaps love will conquer, or perhaps step daddy dearest will create far too much damage.  Becky Lower will take you through a beautiful love story, add just enough suspense to keep you page flipping, and feel enough emotions (be it hate or love) that once you put the book down, you feel FULL!

Another solid story Becky, I can’t wait for more!

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Review:

4 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Once A Seal by Anne Elizabeth can be classified as a contemporary romance.  This is the first time I have read a book by this author and I have to say she shows promise.  Her story held absolute realistic characters and a extremely realistic storyline.  I totally related to this story on a personal level having served many years in the Canadian Forces myself, and I often found myself nodding in agreement, cringing as I read about a civilian trying to adapt to the regimented life of military members and praying that this marriage between our main characters will survive all the stress.

Our story starts off with a bang.  Our leading lady Aria is on a beach, in her wedding gown, eager for her soon to be hubby (that would be our main man Dan) to arrive via helicopter.  As much as I would of loved to believe this was romantic, it was far from it.  Dan is a Navy SEAL who is time crunched after completing a mission.  Though he was late to his own wedding he marries Aria and off they go to start their life together.

While honeymooning near the base, Dan is called away to tackle some military tasks and immediately Aria is thrown into life as a military wife.  After only having known Dan a few weeks prior to marriage, she is shocked to find all the things she needs to know to be a successful military wife.  It seems Dan explains things on the fly just expecting Aria to comply and accept her new life.  I was completely overwhelmed for her.

While trying to adjust to military life, Aria begins to get upset at how little Dan is home and how she is required to do all on her own (all meaning set up house, adapt to military life and even attend military wives functions).  Throw in unplanned guardianship of her younger brother who after much lose is rebelling, Aria is scarcely keeping it together and often is  questioning if she should of married Dan.  Dan on the other hand seems to think that Aria will conform without complaint like a good little military wife.  Add present dangers for them both due to Dan’s occupation, and both healing from troubled pasts, it’s no surprise when things start to fall apart between these two.

Okay … so as I mentioned earlier, this is an absolute realistic story.  I was impressed with the little details that Anne Elizabeth included with regards to military protocol.  Clearly she has either served, has been a spouse of a service member and/or has friends who serve.  She also dove into some action scenes of Dan and his fellow SEAL’s engaged in dangerous missions.  The camaraderie of SEAL brother’s and SEAL wives was evident as well.  I will say though that this book tended to drag a little.  I became bored a few times while reading prolonged descriptions that really could of been edited out.  I think that disturbed the natural flow of the story.

So, the big question is.  Does Aria have what it takes to be a SEAL wife?  Can she adjust and will Dan understand that she needs time to understand all the protocols, rules and his frequent absence?  What is Dan willing to risk to keep Aria?  You’ll have to check it out for yourself …LOL

Interview-RED

Anne, we at the Reading Café would like to thank you for taking the time to answer our questions.

TRC:  Can you please tell us about yourself?

Anne:  I’m a Navy wife, a step-mother, a grandmother, a romance writer, a columnist, and a comic creator. I have a BS in Business and A MS in Communications from Boston University. I am a member of the Author’s Guild and RWA as well as a regular presenter at RT Book Lovers Convention. My contemporary romance is for adults and focuses on Spec Ops and Navy SEALS, and my paranormal comics are geared toward teens. I like the outdoors and we have an exuberant yellow Lab.

TRC:  When and how did you first become interested in writing?

Anne:  Books have intrigued from the time I was a child. My mother tells a story about me…that I learned to read at age three so I could put my own stories into books. Unfortunately, it took me a little longer to learn to write.

TRC:  Once a Seal, which was released last week, is your second book about Navy Seals.  Is this a series about Navy Seals, or are they standalones?

Anne:  Each book is about a different Team, but several of the characters are reoccuring. For those that enjoy continuity, I believe they’ll enjoy the link; and those that prefer standalones, readers can pick up a book and start from anywhere.

Once a SealTRC:  Can you please give us a brief description of Once a Seal?

Anne:  Book Blurb: Every woman dreams of marrying the perfect man-handsome, thoughtful, strong, and sensitive -and Aria Kavanagh believes she’s found the ultimate hero in Petty Officer Second Class Daniel McCullum. But being a U.S. Navy SEAL wife is a serious challenge, especially when the missions are putting more than their love in the line of fire. Can they jump the hurdles and handle the daily rigors without falling apart? Or will the pressures attached to the handsome uniform have them both questioning if their dedication is worth it? Every moment matters when the only thing that truly lasts is love.

TRC: As a Navy wife, did you find it easier to use your life experience for the background of this premise?  Did you still find yourself still having to do research on Navy Seals?

Anne: I always do research. Even if I am pulling information from my own life, I want to make sure I am not making generalizations that are unfounded. So, I conduct interviews with other wives and SEALS. I will even check secondary research such as military case histories, if they are de-classified. My main goal is to represent and support the SEAL community in a positive light.

TRC:  You write Military Romance, Contemporary Romance and Spicy Romance.  Do you have a preference?   Is there any other genre you have a desire to write?

Anne: I love it all! If I could, I would write in all of the genres. Each time I change from spicy to contemporary, it stretches me to think in new directions.

TRC:  Can you please tell us what you working on now?

Anne: I am editing the third book of my SEAL series and editing my script for the fourth graphic novel of the PULSE series as well as two short comics. I enjoy having a job that lets me bring my dog to the office each day and no one minds if I wear pajamas or jeans or a business suit.

TRC:  What is your writing process?  Do you have a favorite place or time you like to write? What are the challenges or difficulties that you found in your writing career?

Anne: Since I am a monthly columnist for RT Book Reviews magazine on comics, manga, and graphic novels as well as a romance writer and comic creator, I have to write every day. My deadlines are mapped out on a giant calendar and to stay on-time, I work each day until I achieve my goal. There are times this schedule can be grueling and there are times that I’m so fulfilled that I cannot stop smiling.

TRC:  You have created a number of Teen Comics.  Can you please tell us about this other part of your career, and how you came to do this?

Anne: I’ve always adored comics. I began the PULSE OF POWER project when I was in high school and kept adding novel-length manuscripts and short stories to the series. When…years ago, I won a contest that Laurell K Hamilton was running and won an opportunity to be in a comic book. I met the publishers and when they found out I was a writer they asked me to pitch a project…and the rest is history. 🙂

TRC:  On your Website, I see that you enjoy doing dangerous sports such as jumping out of an airplane or flying a glider.  Have you always been this adventurous?

Anne: Yes. I was always the child with scrapped knees and elbows from all of my daredevil activities. As an adult, I have more opportunities to experience things. It’s a serious bummer when I end up on crutches!

TRC: Do you make your heroines the same?

Anne: Heavens, no! Each heroine and hero is different. They are well-rounded individuals with different tastes in food, music, clothes, etc. I like mixing things up, because it keeps me intrigued with them, too.

Description:
Voted Number 1 Baby Boomer Lit on Goodreads

Sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronson, each in her forties, are in Puffin Bay, ME for their mother’s funeral and to sink their claws into the fortune each expects to inherit. But their mother has other plans. Her substantial fortune won’t be divided until the trio return to their childhood home and live together for a year.

It’s a request that pits sister against sister but could unite them in a common goal to find the friendship they shared as children, to create a family jewelry business and to win over the men of Puffin Bay. They have a year to figure it all out.

Review:
5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

Seriously, just when I think I have read her best, I am once again floored. Blame it on the Brontes by Becky Lower is a contemporary romance and a story of 3 sisters who have to find their way back to each other and find their ultimate happiness.  I was a little apprehensive to read this as Becky Lower in my mind is a historical romance author (one who has become a fave) so there is that risk that maybe her talent won’t be as prominent or enjoyable in the “yes I enjoy contemporary but it’s not my fave genre”.  Well no worries here .. SHE BLEW MY SOCKS OFF!

I have to admit, I didn’t get through this book without Kleenex and Becky hit every happy nerve I have when I really enjoy a story.  I laughed, I cried, I got mad, annoyed, steamed up in that happy womanly way 😉 and ultimately was satisfied setting down a well rounded read.  In her acknowledgements, Becky makes reference to her publisher about winning a small battle ensuring this was a single book and not a trilogy and I have to say I think she was dead on with this.  It was the split of the story that added that finesse and truthfully if each sister got her own book it would of been way too drawn out.  Good decision with that Becky Lower.

Okay so we taken to Maine in a tourist like town called Puffin Bay.  Here you find the seafood boaters, close town tourist businesses and a strong sense of community.  Right away we are thrown into the story and learn that sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronson have recently lost their beloved mother.  Charlotte who is the oldest and lived with her mother has reluctantly welcomed home her somewhat estranged sisters for the funeral.  Trying to get through this event without fighting seems to take much effort however, and while the town’s infamous gossip of the Bronson sisters stressed relationship once again flourishes, deceased mama dearest will have the last laugh by deciding to part this world with the wisest of wishes.  During the reading of her will, it is discovered that their mother had put aside a good chunk of change and if the girls wish to inherit it, they need to live under the same roof for one year time.  Horrified by the thought, all reluctantly agree and within the next 90 days decide to prepare.

Through highlighted sections of a continuing story, each sister receives her spotlight.  It is discovered that Charlotte and Anne do little else but tolerate one another while Emily play referee.  A huge issue that has hung over them for 18 years comes forth revealing secrets and hurt that is so raw it’s a wonder that these girls find their way back to each other.  Throw in their ideal men who come with their own issues and struggles and you can almost picture Mama Bronson in heaven shaking her head and chuckling at her brilliant idea.  These three come together in ways that define family.  They eagerly open their minds and come up with a family business that keeps them all focused and working together as a team.  Slowly, they begin to once again open their hearts to one another and their find their “better halfs” in the process.  Wounds begin to heal and a true family forms.

On the shorter side with just over 200 pages, this was a beautiful read.  I think to anyone who has a strong sense of family and/or can relate to family struggles, this is an ideal choice!  I am however a self professed Becky Lower fan, so I say you should try it just because this author is crazy talented with words.  LOL

HAPPY READING! 🙂

New York cop Sherry Abandonato cashes in her savings and dashes to Ningaloo in remote northwest Western Australia to find her sister who disappeared ten days ago. The only one with the skill to guide her to Derremawan is Mason Hayward, once an official guide with a reputation for getting people out of trouble, but now the town’s bad man.

In a searing afternoon of unexpected passion, Mason strikes a bargain. He’ll get her to Derremawan, if she agrees to go there with him unconditionally, on his terms and his conditions.

Sherry is astonished to find herself agreeing to the insane bargain, and worse, responding positively to the idea of three days of Mason Hayward dictating terms out under the Australian sun.

REVIEW:

3.5 out for 5 for this reader folks!

Ningaloo Nights by Tracy Cooper-Posey is a short erotic, with BDSM elements story set in Australians outback where the heat comes from more than just the scorching sun.

Sherry Abandonato is a New York cop that decides to fly to Australia after her sister goes missing.  After speaking with the locals she decides to seek out a tour guide (who just so happens to have a no nonsense mentality and the sex appeal to go with it .. WINK) to take her into the dangerous countryside to try and figure out what happened to her sister.

Mason Hayward is somewhat taken back with Sherry.  She exibits the tough New York cop mentality (and the potty mouth to match ..lol), but he sees something vunerable and “shielded” within her.  He is set to break down those walls when he accepts this job.

Within minutes of meeting these two are engaging in the hot and somewhat heavy.  From there an unspoken “this is going to happen” is understood between them and off they set on their trip.

We encounter some pretty heated sexy scenes along the way with Mason most certainly being the dominant trying to entice Sherry into trusting enough to submit.  Also, they come to know each other on a emotional level and discover they both harbor some serious heartache from their pasts.

Okay so that is the gest of the story.  Honestly for a less than 100 page story, this was hot and I was entertained.  My only true “beef” with it was that everything came on so quick so it felt a little unbelievable at times.  I think perhaps with a few more pages, we may have been able to enjoy a little bit more anticipation and seen them develop as a couple

Overall, a great quick read that I gobbled in one sitting.  If you like the smutty, especially the smutty in the sun … grab an iced tea and settle in!  LOL

Description:

“Nothing ever changes at Wauregan.” That
mystique is the tradition of the idyllic island colony off the shore of Long
Island, the comforting tradition that its summer dwellers have lived by for
over half a century. But in the summer of 1948, after a world war has claimed
countless men—even those who came home—the time has come to deal with
history’s indelible scars.

Helen Wadsworth’s husband, Arthur, was declared
missing in action during an OSS operation in France, but the official
explanation was mysteriously nebulous. Now raising a teenage son who longs to
know the truth about his father, Helen turns to Frank Hartman—her
husband’s best friend and his partner on the mission when he
disappeared. Frank, however, seems more intent on filling the void in Helen’s life
that Arthur’s absence has left. As Helen’s affection for Frank grows, so does
her guilt, especially when Peter Gavin, a handsome Marine who was brutally
tortured by the Japanese and has returned with a faithful war dog, unexpectedly
stirs new desires. With her heart pulled in multiple directions, Helen doesn’t know
whom to trust—especially when a shocking discovery forever alters her
perception of both love and war.

Review:

3 out of 5 stars for this reader folks

A Certain Summer by Patricia Beard is classified as historical fiction with a lump of romance.  The setting is 1948 on a small town beach tourist island that draws the same crowd each and every summer.  The beach houses are beautiful, the festivals are crowd pleasers and life is generally good when you are there despite the typical small town gossipers and expectations of how one is to live.  We are also set post WWII where men have come home to a life that they are expected to adapt right back into after living their own personal hell overseas.

Helen Wadworth is our leading lady who has to live with the fact that her husband Arthur was lost overseas for years.  Not knowing for sure what on earth happened or if he is in fact deceased, she is in constant limbo, torn between having to remain faithful to her husband, raising her teenage son (Jack) alone, wondering if love will ever find her again and finding out once and for all what happened on that fateful mission her husband was engaged in.  Arthur’s best friend Frank (who just so happened to serve overseas with Arthur and on that fateful mission) comes to visit Helen and begins to woo her, and in many ways takes on the husband role.  Helen is attracted to Frank and I think she relishes the familiarity that he brings to the summer beach home.  He is comfortable.  Another important character is Peter Gavin.  Peter is a young marine that lives next door to Helen and is nursing a damaged body and mind from the war he fought in.  He was captured and tortured at enemy hands and is currently trying to move on with his life.  Max, his war dog, is a tremendous help in this process.  Before Helen realizes it, she is engaged in a love triangle with Frank and Peter.  Helen also begins to actively investigate the details of her husbands disappearance and before you know it, you are reading a story about mystery, love, betrayal, history acceptance and understanding.

Okay so here is the nitty gritty.  I didn’t LOVE this book.  I didn’t HATE it either!  It was a good solid read but I have to admit I had a hard time remaining engaged.  The first half of the book I had to read in many sittings as it was so detailed in description and flashbacks that it took away from the flow of the story and I found myself wanting to scream “get on with it already”.  It has a slow pace which begins to pick up half way through and that is where to story redeems itself for me.  I really liked the second half of this book as the relationships begin to develop, Helen gets off her fine rear end and begins to really question what happened to her husband.  We even get some travel off the island and overseas.

My fave … that’s easy!  Max and Peter (especially Max the dog ..lol)  Reading how these two bonded was so endearing and if you are an animal lover you’ll appreciate this part of the book too.  It amazes me how soldiers bonded with certain animals during war time and what pivotal roles dogs had to play.  I think Max is Peter’s salvation and once Helen was added you begin to see the wounds knit together.

If you are looking for a beach read this summer and you enjoy love triangles with some history, then check out this book.  I did enjoy beautiful scenic pictures in my mind, but keep in mind the story is a little sad with some happy.

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Review:

4.5 out of 5 for this reader folks!

WOW!  JUST WOW!  What a serious intense read that was.  I don’t think I have ever cried this much over a book.  OH MY HEART was pulled and pushed, squeezed and there were times I thought I couldn’t read any more because I felt so raw (small disclaimer here as I have a hard time reading anything about children torn from their parents or young children dying, so I might be ultra sensitive here).  In actuality this was a hard read for me as it was so emotional and left me feeling icky and good all at the same time!  Hard to explain that, and honestly as worthy of the 4.5 stars this book gets from me, I can say I will not reread!

He Belongs To Me by Theresa Rizzo is a contemporary read that yes is classified as romance.  However, while romance is such an integral part of the story, it wasn’t the end all be all to this book.  I really believe that this should be also classified as some kind of court/suspense as well.

Catherine Boyd is our leading lady.  She has grown up in a life or order and privilege.  She marries Thomas Boyd (our leading man and her ultimate soul mate) at a very young age due to lust and love and pretty much goes against her parents wishes.  Catherine and Thomas soon discover that they are expecting twins.  Shortly after the birth of the twin boys, one of them sadly passes away.  Thomas is then accused of his son’s death and undergoes a trial only to be found innocent.  But the damage is done!  The marriage is pulled apart and after some nasty words from Catherine, Thomas packs his bags and leaves (although unknown to Catherine, never really stops checking in)!

While Catherine is in a serious emotional state, her parents convince her to go back to college out of town and they will take care of her other son Andrew (Drew).  She believes she signs over temp custody for the duration of her education and will be reunited with Drew once she is stable with a home and a job.  Graduation comes, as does the time for her to get her son back.  HOWEVER …. asshat daddy bigbucks (I am being so kind using that term) promptly tells her that she will not have her son unless she moves back home and begins the live that they have chosen for her.  Then it is revealed that she was tricked into signing permanent custody (to her parents) papers and that she is not entitled to have her son back!

Catherine decides to play hard ball with idiotstick dad and goes back to find the husband that she never quite divorced.  Thomas agrees to a temporary reconciliation to get their son back.  They move into a house together, in public play the happy “trying to make it work” couple but deep inside they both still have so much unresolved with each other that you wonder if these two will ever really have a chance to make it work!  They fight the natural attraction they have for each other as they are fearful of loving deeply and trusting one another again!  They need to learn how to be parents to a little boy they hardly know but love so very much.

We are taken through an intense and incredible court room battle where dirty secrets are revealed, anger is thrown about so freely and where as a reader you truely have no clue where this ending is going to go!  You read all about a deception and betrayal so unthinkable it boils your blood to have to read about it.  The ending … well … ya …. I’ll leave it at that!  😉

I love a book that takes you on a rollercoaster and the box of kleenex that was beside me was evidence that I had one heck of a ride.  Why the 4.5 and not the 5 you ask then??? EASY!  At times I felt there was a little too much angst.  I get that this was THAT kind of book, and maybe it was my own mindset, but I wanted more happy!

Theresa Rizzo writes beautifully.  Her courtroom scenes were my fave and she writes a pretty great romance scene too!  LOL  I hope to read more of her in the near future!

So, do Catherine and Thomas rekindle and make it?  Who does Drew end up with?  Grandma and Grandpa “we think the world revolves around us because we are pompous asses with money” or Mommy and Daddy “we have finally understood that we need to grow up already to be the best parents we can be”?

HAPPY READING! 🙂

Cotillion Ball Series by Becky Lower – Combined Reviews

Cotillion Ball Series by Becky Lower – Combined Reviews

4.5 out of 5 for all 3 books for this reader folks! 🙂

Before I get into any of the meaty bits of this review, I would like to say this series is a breath of fresh air for a historical romance lover like me.  Most Historical Romances are set in England, consist of a Lord, Duke, Rake and some Lady or Duchess.  The tradition is stingy and sharp (which don’t get me wrong I love), but most is predictable!  Well in comes Becky Lower and introduces this era (mid 1800’s) and mixes it up a bit.  The setting for all these book is … AMERICA.  Different tradition and rules, cultures, races, the way one speaks and the best part … REAL FACTS and snippets of history that have always fascinated me.  HELLO PRE CIVIL WAR!  It was incredible to read real life incidents, and places and how they are weaved into a fictional story.

Small Disclaimer as I am a tad biased.  Anything to do with the American Civil War fascinates me and draws me in.  I was picturing “Gone With the Wind” and “North and South” in my mind so many times.  I should also mention that this is the first historical romance series that I have read that chooses America as it’s setting in this era .. I APPROVE!  LOL

Alrighty then, clearly you know what I love, let’s get to the stories so you can determine if you’ll love too! 🙂

DESCRIPTION:

Voted #1 Surprising Good Books by Goodreads readers

Voted #27 Romantic ebook Must Reads by Goodreads readers

In 1855 New York, Ginger Fitzpatrick has absolutely no interest in taking part in the newest rage in America-the Cotillion Ball. Instead, Ginger would rather be rallying for women’s rights-at least until she meets her brother’s best friend from St. Louis, a dark mysterious man named Joseph Lafontaine, who ignites her passion and makes her question if love and marriage is such a ridiculous notion after all.

What she and the rest of New York’s high society don’t realize is that Joseph is half Ojibwa Indian, and therefore, totally unsuitable for marriage to a fine, cultured young lady.

REVIEW:

The Cotillion Ball series begins by introducing us to the Fitzpatrick family.  Dad, Mom and many young and older siblings that are named after herbs and spices.  In this book, our focus is on Ginger Fitzpatrick.  Ginger is a bit of a rebel in her own way.  She is all about woman’s rights and is quite vocal in her way of thinking.  The last thing Ginger wants or has time for is her coming out season.  While Ginger gets her way in most aspects from daddy dearest, she is put in her place and told that she will parade around in fancy dresses, have her dance card filled and flirt in non scandalous manners to land her a husband.

Basil, who is Ginger’s oldest brother, comes home with his BFF Joseph to assist and accompany Ginger during her seasons activities.  What he doesn’t count on happening .. Joseph and Ginger falling in love.  Basil doesn’t reveal something to his family when he introduces Joesph, and that would be that Joseph is half Ojibwa Indian, and French Canadian (WOOT CANADA ..LOL)!  Well being Canadian isn’t the problem, but his blood and culture being half Ojibwa Indian is scandalous in New York high society.  The Fitzpatrick family decide to just keep it to themselves and carry on as if he is completely acceptable without revealing his race.

Ginger is completely smitten with Joseph (and vice versa), but Joseph knows his race will cause issue so he tries everything he can keep his distance.  Ginger, thinks it’s ridiculous that his race is even a factor and tries to pursue him.  He is soon to be found in a compromising position with Ginger, and Basil being the over protective big bro flies off the handle.  Hearts are broken!

It takes a pretty big catastrophe in this book to shake this family into accepting that life as they know it is changing fast.  Feuding between the north and the south is starting to heat up, woman are rallying for rights and the abolitionist movement has commenced.

Ginger is very likeable and is a strong woman who knows what she wants.  She is not afraid of consequences, polite society or of what other people think.  My kind of girl!  LOL  Joseph makes a great hero as he is always trying to do the right thing, and while he loves Ginger, he respects her family enough to step back.  Well .. until push comes to shove …… WINK!

THE ABOLITIONIST’S SECRET – Book 2
roses2DESCRIPTION:

In 1856 New York, Heather Fitzpatrick, a bashful abolitionist, falls for young Army lieutenant David Whitman, who is tracking a runaway slave–the very slave she and her parents rescued from the hands of the slavemongers a few nights earlier.

Despite their divergent views on slavery, romance ensues when David dances with Heather at the Cotillion Ball, and later that night, when he walks her home. An engagement quickly follows. When he receives word that his father is ailing, David wants her to accompany him home to Savannah, GA to meet his family.

Heather wants to make the trip with him, especially since his father’s death seems imminent. With her maid as chaperone, they board the train heading South. After his father passes, his mother insists any marriage will have to wait the requisite year, which is proper for mourning. She hopes to send Heather home, and to use the time to dissuade David from his foolish choice, especially since his mother has already handpicked his potential bride.

Heather longs to stay to wait out the year, and to begin teaching the slaves to read and write, but she knows the South is so place for an abolitionist.

REVIEW:

This book was my fave of the three books and I think it’s because we really start to dig into what ignites the Civil War.  Here we meet Heather Fitzpatrick who is northerner, abolitionist, the quieter twin sister to Jasmine, and generally a lovely human being.  Heather and her twin sister Jasmine are both coming out this season and as many girls are, “husband hunting”.  Their mom meets our hero Lt David Whitman in the first book to this series and believes he would be a good match for either twin (she doesn’t realize that David is the second son of a plantation, slave owning family).  One look at Heather and he is SOLD on marrying this woman.

As our heroine and hero are falling in love, the Fitzpatrick family has a secret.  They are abolitionist’s and have rescued a slave woman and her baby from slave mongers .. who just happen to be looking for a woman and a baby that have gone “missing” from David’s family plantation.

Through some debate and faith, David and Heather decide to become engaged.  Though knowing that David’s older brother has died and that his family hopes he will assume the plantation responsibility (David has no interest in this) the saving grace for Heather’s family to agree to this union is that David has strong belief in slave freedom and new ways of the south.  Soon a letter follows saying that David’s dad isn’t doing so well and that he needs to come south immediately.  He convinces Dad Fitzpatrick to allow Heather to join him so she can meet his family and announce the engagement.

Well … Mom Whitman is a real bitch!  I mean really nasty, and certainly not the gracious southerner.  This mama has been planning for David to adopt the life that she had hoped for her deceased older son, which includes inheriting the plantation and marrying the girl next girl.  Well she certainly isn’t accepting of Heather and does some really horrible things in hopes of ensuring that the marriage between David and Heather doesn’t happen.  Heather, with David’s encouragement stands by his side, and starts to teach the slaves how to read and write.  This is ILLEGAL in the south and it is ammunition for mama bitch to use against her.  You betcha she uses it and comes between David and Heather.

Through deep beliefs, faith and understanding that times are changing and letting go of tradition, these two really have to fight to make this work.  I was so impressed with Heather because at the beginning she is portrayed as somewhat of a timid creature but when she is facing conflict, she rises up and kicks some serious booty.  She has a really great head on her shoulder and uses it for the greater good.  David .. well he is just lovable.  He goes out of his way to make sure that the world knows who he loves and who he intends to marry.  He also stands up to mama bitch and has to make changes that go against typical south traditions and in my opinion that takes guts!

BANKING ON TEMPERANCE – Book 3
Banking on Temperance

DESCRIPTION:

Basil Fitzpatrick was born into a life of privilege. In 1856, at 23 years of age, he is the owner of the St. Louis branch of the family banking business. He has his pick of the ladies and life by the horns.

Temperance Jones and her family are far from privileged. Her father is a circuit-riding preacher from Pennsylvania. But the rumblings of a war between the North and the South force the preacher to move his family to Oregon rather than to take up arms against his fellow man. However, hardship and sickness slowed their pace, and they are forced to spend the winter in St. Louis, waiting for the next wagon trains to leave in the spring.

Basil is drawn to the family the moment they roll into town, partly because they remind him of his own big family in New York. But also because of the eldest daughter, Temperance. She is a tiny, no-nonsense spitfire bent on fulfilling her father’s wish to get the family safely to Oregon. Basil knows if he allows Temperance into his heart, he is accepting the obligation of her entire family. He wants Temperance like he has wanted no other, but is the burden of her family too much?

REVIEW:

This book reunites us with Ginger and Joseph but the main focus is on Basil Fitzpatrick and Temperance Jones in St Louis.

Basil is the bank owner in St Louis and lives his life as a bachelor.  He is young, privileged, wealthy and quite a rake.  He enjoys his freedom and the “love em or leave em” way of life.  Well things are about to change and shake his only way of living when Temperance walks into his bank with her ailing father to withdraw funds.  Temperance’s father is quite ill and collapses in the bank leaving Basil feeling responsible for her very large family.  Basil finds himself taking care of them by offering shelter, employment and general support.  He also begins to realize that helping them is a tad more selfish on his part than he would like to admit.  He fights his immediate attraction for Temperance.

Temperance is the complete opposite to Basil.  She is poor, virtuous, one heck of a shot, non pampered and hard working young woman who promises her father on his death bed that she will ensure her family continues their journey on to Oregon.  She is also a no nonsense, spit fire, and get er’ done kind of girl.  She accepts employment cleaning the bank in order to support her family.

Basil and Temperance do the attraction dance for most of this book.  Both are incapable of giving in to the other and they let their pride get the better of them.  Basil also isn’t so sure about accepting all of the baggage that comes with getting involved with Temperance, and Temperance cannot imagine why such a distinguished gentleman would ever be interested in the likes of her.  Instead, both engage in a tension filled friendship without revealing their real desires.

As Temperance is so set on travelling to Oregon, Basil helps her in trying to achieve this goal while deep inside hating that she is leaving.  He goes as far as to introduce her to a man who has the means to make this journey happen.  Basil is shocked to realize just how jealous he becomes at seeing her in another mans arms.  All their friends and family seem to see the inevitable joining, but only if these two can get out of their own damn way.

I really liked Temperance right from the beginning and can understand what Basil was drawn to.  She is a tough lady who can shoot the ass off a wolf, cook a mean corn chowder, fiercely protect her family in the process and work hard.  Basil  also really grew up in this book if you compare him to the Basil we met in the first book!  It took a while for these two to get there &^*& together but their journey was worth the wait.

I really hope Becky Lower continues with this series as there are so many characters that are introduced that I want to know more about.  Once again, I LOVE that this centres around the civil war and is set in another USA city.  I loved that the setting for each books takes place in a different city and you can see how the approaching war is causing havoc in so many ways.

I highly recommend you read all three books in order as the characters are repeated and you see the continuation of a couple’s story.  I suppose you could read them as stand alones but if you do that, you miss out on so much!

HAPPY READING 🙂
