DARKNESS POSSESSED (Order of the Blade #9) by Stephanie Rowe

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 28, 2014

A fatal mistake stripped Zach Roderick of the powers that define him, leaving him a tormented shadow of the warrior he once was. Now, his teammate’s life depends on Zach resurrecting the fire that once burned within him. As he undertakes a battle he has no way to win, he is derailed by a tempestuous beauty that awakens in him the dark desires that destroyed him once before.

The scars etched on Rhiannon Diaz’s soul are so deep that she will never again be free. The once-powerful guardian is facing her last and greatest battle, and failure means a return to a sexual enslavement that is far worse than death. Her intense and passionate need for the powerful warrior who has vowed to protect her threatens the very foundation of her survival, but his refusal to abandon her drags them both into a world where wild, untamed passion rages, and surrender is their only chance.

REVIEW: DARKNESS POSSESSED is the ninth instalment in Stephanie Rowe’s Order of the Blade adult, paranormal romance series focusing on a group of supernatural warriors. As members of the Order of the Blade, these Calydons are tasked with destroying their own who have gone rogue after finding and mating their ‘sheva’ (soulmate). Although some male Calydons have found ways to avoid the inevitable-going rogue-others are too far gone and must be destroyed before they destroy everyone else. This is Calydon and Order of the Blade warrior Zach Roderick and Calydon female Rhiannon Diaz’s storyline.

I will point out from the outset that many readers of this series believe that each storyline can be read as a stand alone but I would strongly suggest reading in order from the beginning. Case in point is the reference to Zach’s former Order of the Blade mentor (and leader) Dante whose declaration in a previous storyline fuels the premise of DARKNESS POSSESSED. Saying that, Stephanie Rowe does provide some background information that gives the reader a bit of cohesive history.

The focus of this storyline finds Zach on the hunt for a mysterious ‘fire god’ who is in possession of a weapon that will reverse the effects of ‘going rogue’. When Order of the Blade warrior Rohan orders Zach to retrieve the magical staff, Zach finds himself accidentally partnered with a woman who is hoping to destroy the very person Zach is desperate to find. Rhiannon’s former soul mate demands she return as his sex slave but Zach is hoping to make Rhiannon his own.

The call to mate is reluctant due to the potential for going rogue and in this the Calydon males avoid finding their ‘shevas’ at all costs. When true love sparks something within the heart and the soul, there is nothing that can stop the roller coaster of emotions. It is the fear of the inevitable that forces many Calydon males in another direction.

The relationship between Zach and Rhiannon is one born out of necessity. Each has lost a little of themselves-their individual powers have remained dormant through guilt and loss. Zach’s power calls to the element of fire and Rhiannon’s calls to the element of earth. Zach is a man possessed to save his friend and fellow warrior; Rhiannon is a woman whose need for revenge outweighs everything else in her life.

DARKNESS POSSESSED is a dark, imaginative and violent storyline. There are scenes of abusive control, deadly battles, murder and destruction; and there are scenes of sensuality and love. Stephanie Rowe pulls the reader into a passionate and suspense filled story where the past controls the present; where power and control destroy any chance for love; and where two people will find in one another what they never found (before).

YOUR ALPHA HERO

Broad shoulders, silhouetted against a dark night.

Dark hair.

Chiseled jaw with shadowed whiskers.

The steely gaze of a man who feels no pain, who still stop at nothing to protect those he has sworn to safeguard…until his head turns and he see you. Then, his face softens, and he smiles, a smile just for you, that no one else will ever receive from him, because you are the woman who has broken through the iron shields around his heart and saved his soul.

That, my friends, is your alpha hero. Ruggedly handsome, powerful, and unapproachable by all. A man so strong that you could put the fate of the world in his hands, and not worry about whether he’ll be able to step up. As women, we love our men to be strong enough to protect us from any and all threats, not just those to our physical being, but we also want his big, strong hands to cradle our hearts so gently and protectively that nothing can ever hurt us again.

The beauty of the alpha hero in a paranormal romance is that he can be so much stronger, darker, and so much dangerous than in a contemporary novel. A man who has been tortured in hell for seven hundred years has a lot of weight to his soul, and a man who can defeat an army of demons is just that much tougher. The darker and more damaged a man is, the greater the leap he has to make to find the softness in his heart for a woman. As women, we want to be that special one who can bring light into his soul, and we want to be the one to save him. Snagging the alpha paranormal hero is like saving the ultimate bad boy, a fantasy that so many carry deep in their hearts.

Excerpt

The jungle smelled rich with the dampness of fertile soil. The trees were alive with the chatter of birds and the rustle of animals. Rhiannon closed her eyes and breathed deeply as she let the power of her birthplace roll over her and seep into her body. The freshness of the air seemed to cleanse her of all the grime and pollution that had accumulated during her years of living in civilization. She could almost feel her cells coming back to life and embracing the deep nourishment of the land she was meant to live in.

She went down on one knee and crumbled some dirt between her fingers, watching the rich, brown loam fall back to the ground from which it had come. To her surprise, she felt her throat tighten, and tears burned in her eyes. She hadn’t realized how much she’d missed being home. It had been two days since she had left Boston. After much hard traveling, she’d almost reached the region that had once given her life…and then betrayed her.

A sudden sound broke through her focus and she went utterly still, listening intently. Another sound, quiet yet heavy, came from her right, and she recognized it instantly as the footstep of a creature that was too big to be a human, but could easily be a heavily armed Calydon. Without taking time to stand, she pivoted on her knee as she swept an arrow out of her quiver and pulled her crossbow off her shoulder. In less than a millisecond she nocked an arrow and had it pointing at the cluster of bushes from which the sound had come.

She knew she was in the open more than she wanted to be, but relocating into the trees would attract more attention than staying completely still. Her mottled brown and green cargo pants and jacket would help her blend into her surroundings. Even her crossbow still retained the colors of the jungle that had once been her home.

There was silence. No movement followed the steps that she had heard, which made her tension rise even further. Whatever it was had become aware of her, and it was waiting for her to move in the same way she was anticipating its next step.

Penetrating silence prevailed, each trying to outwait the other. The muscles in her arms began to tremble, and she realized how out of shape she was. There had been a time when she had been able to hold her bow at the ready for hours, outwaiting even the most patient of enemies. Now, it had been less than a minute and already her arms were shaking. Her hamstring was cramping from the uncomfortable position she’d frozen in. A trickle of sweat was slithering down her brow, and she knew it wouldn’t be long before it went into her eye. It wasn’t even hot compared to what the jungle often was, but she could feel the steam rising off her body, curling her hair, and dampening her clothes.

With grim trepidation, she realized she had gone soft. She was in no condition to take on José and think she could walk away. She’d lost to him even when she’d been fit and in her prime. Now? She couldn’t even hold an arrow ready for more than a minute. Her pulse began to hammer in her throat, and she willed it to quiet, knowing that José would be able to hear her heart pounding if he was the one in the bushes.

Please don’t let it be José. She wasn’t ready to face him yet. If she met him now, she would have no chance. A cold fear gripped her, and her fingers tightened involuntarily around the arrow, even as she fought to stay relaxed. Physical tension would throw off her aim. She had to stay loose.

Then she caught a scent, drifting to her over the complex smells of the jungle. It was the scent of a man. Not José. A stranger. He smelled of sweat, adrenaline, and something else. A deeper scent that seemed to reach inside her and unfurl in her belly. She instantly recognized her response as attraction. Desire. Lust. Dear God, she wanted this man. Fear gripped her with sudden cruelty, freezing her muscles and obliterating all thought from her mind except for a raw terror that screamed at her to run. Run. Run!

Her instincts knew she had to stay utterly still, but the fear of her attraction to a man was so deep that she could not make herself stay. Attraction was a trap. Desire could be twisted to hurt her. Lust was a cruel lie. Wanting a man was doom, torture, and a hell she’d never survive.

Instead of staying still and hidden as she should have, panic forced her to act. She leapt to her feet, spun around, and ran blindly through the forest, her boots thudding noisily on the ground. Branches tripped her and plants seemed to spring up out of the earth to grab her ankles. She couldn’t even focus enough to ask them to help her instead of hurting her. Her mind was a swirling miasma of terror and memories, screaming at her to run and escape while she still had the chance.

“Hey!” The man shouted at her, his deep voice booming through the jungle.

The rich bass of his voice plunged through her flesh and ignited a fire inside her. A fire of want, longing, and the urge to turn and charge right toward him instead of away from him. “Oh, God, no. Not again.” Tears streamed down her cheeks as she sprinted through the jungle, not even paying attention to where she was going. She couldn’t remember the layout exactly. Her mind was fragmented with fear and terror, just as it had been so long ago when she had run for her life through these very woods. She stumbled over a root and tumbled to the earth, barely getting her hands out in time to cushion her fall. Her crossbow jammed into her jawbone and she gasped as the pain shot through her.

She hadn’t even finished falling when she was already back up on her feet, stumbling as she tried to keep going. Trees loomed above her on all sides, but the branches were too high for her to reach, and she couldn’t focus enough to ask the trees to help her. Everything she had as a weapon was gone, disintegrated by the fear ripping through her.

Then she realized there were heavy footsteps thundering after her, getting closer and closer. He was chasing her! She put on another burst of speed, her breath burning her lungs as she fought for air. Her legs were trembling, shaking with exhaustion as she asked her body to do things it hadn’t done in so long.

She frantically tried to focus enough to take in her surroundings and understand where she was. She couldn’t keep this up. She had to find a way out. She had to—

A hand closed on her shoulder, and fingers dug into her flesh, pulling her to a stop.

With his touch, all conscious thought fled from her mind. She grabbed the dagger from where it sat on her hip and spun around, striking as she turned. Her blade hit flesh, plunging deep inside thick muscle before she’d even finished her turn to see who was after her.

The dark brands on his forearms told her all she needed to know. It was a Calydon, and her dagger was in his heart. She spun the rest of the way around, facing him as he fell.

“Shit!” The warrior’s dark eyes widened in surprise as he stumbled and went down to his knees.

Rhiannon ripped her dagger out of his chest and went still, bracing her legs in a ready position as she held the dagger ready. She knew she had to keep moving, but she couldn’t run anymore. Not yet. She needed time to recover. She had nothing left. Her breath heaved in her chest as she desperately tried to get air.

She saw the blood pouring from his chest, and realized she’d struck a clean blow into the heart. Instinct had shown her where to find a heart on a Calydon, taking into account his height when she’d made her blind strike. Maybe she wasn’t a total loss. Maybe she still had some of her old skills. Maybe she still had a chance to survive.

She took another deep breath, trying to recover from her run. She knew the respite from his injury wouldn’t last long, but the heart had been a good place to hit.

He looked up at her as he pressed his palm to the wound on his chest. “Why the hell did you do that?” His voice had the same effect on her as before. It slithered through her body like a warm, seductive caress of pure temptation. And now that she could see what he looked like, it was even stronger.

His eyes were dark brown, flecked with bits of gold. His stare was intense, sinking deep into her very soul as he gazed at her. She felt herself flush under his stare, her body pulsing in response to the heat of his attention. For a moment, the world seemed to freeze, and she was caught in his spell, in his raw masculinity and strength. His cheekbones were sculpted, giving him a regal appearance, despite the heavy growth of whiskers and the disheveled dark hair, which gave him an aura of danger and lethalness that should have terrified her…but she found herself riveted by him instead.

His shoulders were broad, but not as broad as José’s. Unlike José and his men, who wore camouflage pants, lean boots, and sported bare chests as if impersonating some ancient warrior, this Calydon was wearing the garb of civilization. His blue jeans were dirty and torn. His black T-shirt was loose and ragged. He was wearing hiking boots, but they appeared to be heavily insulated as if they were meant for trekking through snow and ice instead of the brutal heat of the jungle. He didn’t look like he belonged to this jungle or to José, but the twin dark brands on his forearms told her all she needed to know.

He was a Calydon, and that meant he was a threat, no matter how intense her reaction to him was. In fact, he was even more dangerous because of the way she wanted to fall under his spell. Men knew how to take advantage of a woman’s attraction to them. They preyed upon it, twisting it to their advantage. She knew better than to want a man, but her fingers actually twitched with the need to lay her hand over his wound and take away his pain, to feel his flesh beneath her palm, to move closer, and lose herself in the incredible strength and power of his being.

“Yeah…” he said softly, his gaze locked onto hers, as if he were having the same intense reaction to her that she was having to him. “Who are you?” he asked. “What’s your name?”

“Who am I?” The question jerked her back to the present, to the very real danger he presented. If he’d been sent to find her, his quest would have to end now. Even as she thought it, resistance pulsed through her, and she realized she didn’t want to kill him.

Grimly, she took a step back as she pulled another arrow out of her quiver. She set it in the bow and aimed it right between his eyes. “What do you want?”

She needed to know whether he had stumbled across her accidentally, or if José already knew she was here. Then, once she had her answers, she would do her best to kill the man kneeling before her.

She ignored the stab of regret at the notion of killing him. Sure, he smelled incredible and had eyes that had momentarily melted right through the fear of men that she kept wrapped so tightly around her. That didn’t mean she was going to make the same mistake that had once almost killed her. Never would she trust the wrong man, or any man, again.

Never.

He would have to die. There was simply no other option.

REVIEW: LEAD is the third instalment in Kylie Scott’s adult, contemporary Stage Dive erotic romance series focusing on the member of the rock group Stage Dive. This is lead singer Jimmy Ferris and assistant/companion Lena Morrissey’ storyline.

Jimmy is in need of a baby sitter following his latest release from rehab. The temptations on the road and behind the scenes are too much and his friends want to ensure that Jimmy stays clean and sober-enter Lena Morrissey- an office secretary who has been pulled into the nightmare that is Jimmy Ferris. With his brash and self-centred attitude Jimmy isn’t the easiest person with whom to live but Lena makes every effort to keep Jimmy clean. From late night movies to companionable silence, Lena will slowly work her magic on a man who has never known love or acceptance.

The relationship between Lena and Jimmy is slow to build as they play around one another for a good portion of the story. Jimmy is a man haunted by his past; the childhood that was all but destroyed by an alcoholic mother and in this Jimmy wants nothing to do with falling in love or a permanent relationship. As the friendship between our leading couple grows, so too does Lena’s love for Jimmy-a love that will never be reciprocated.

The humorous banter continues throughout the series with drummer Mal’s manic repartee as well as the one on one interaction between Jimmy and Lena. Kylie Scott does a fantastic job pulling the reader into the storyline with her use of humor, sarcasm, heartbreak, and all too familiar feel of an emotional roller coaster ride. Jimmy is man whose life has been hard-from an abusive childhood to addiction and the fall out of a PR disaster aiming to take him down, he is a man hiding behind the façade of a rock star whose very nature pushes everyone away-a little bit at a time.

The secondary characters include all of the members of Stage Dive as well as their girlfriends and lovers. We get reacquainted with David and Evelyn: Mal and Anne; as well as a hint of what’s to come with guitarist Ben. The interaction between the members of Stage Dive with one another is colorful, frenetic and funny.

LEAD is a heartbreaking and emotional storyline where we get up close and personal with the infamy of Jimmy Ferris. I did shed a tear or two so be forewarned to have some tissues on hand. Stage Dive is a provocative and captivating series where the drama of being in the spotlight hides a world of secrets and bitter truths. Kylie Scott writes with a startling realism and an intensity that will pull you in and never let go.

excerpt

“Lena, you seen my old black Led Zep shirt?”
“Nope.”
“You sure?” His brows became one dark cranky line. The scratches on his face were healing well, thank goodness. Though it didn’t reduce my desire to throttle his mother on a daily basis.
“Yes. I haven’t seen it.”
Can’t find it anywhere…”
“And this is a surprise, how?” I slipped my hands into my back jean’s pockets. “Jimmy, you own more clothing than Cher, Brittney, and Elvis, put together. Things are bound to go missing.”
“Sure you haven’t seen it?”
“For goodness sake, what do you think, Jimmy? That I stole it to sleep in or something?” I laughed bitterly. Sure as hell, the truth deserved a good mocking. I’d sunk so despicably low.
I hadn’t even meant to steal the stupid thing, but the shirt had been mixed up with my laundry a few days ago. It’d been the first top I laid my hand on after stepping out of the shower, ready to go to bed. Without thought, I’d put it on and it’d been so soft, the scent of him lingering beneath the laundry detergent. Every night since, I’d found myself in it come bedtime. My shame knew no limits. And no, I still hadn’t quit. The words still hadn’t come even close to leaving my mouth.
He frowned. “No.”
“That I have some deep secret longing to feel close to you resulting in my stealing your shirt like some creepy perv?”
“Course I don’t fucking think that,” he replied crankily, reaching up to grip the top of the doorframe. All of his bulging muscles stretched the arms of his white T-shirt in the nicest way. It was all I could do not to start drooling, my heart beat taking up residence somewhere down between my thighs. And who could blame it? Not me. Maybe if I got laid, this would go away and things would return to normal. It’d seemed safer to avoid rubbing up against any men just in case I got carried away and started dating again. This new situation, however, changed everything.
“Well, of course not! That would be crazy.” And wasn’t that the god’s honest truth? Cray-zeee. Lock me up and throw away the key because it wasn’t like I didn’t know better.
“Just can’t figure out where the hell it could be.”
Angels couldn’t have smiled as innocently. They might have tried, but they would have failed, the dirty-mouthed, winged, little liars. “Jimmy, I don’t know where it is. But I’ll look around for it later, okay?”
“Yeah,” he said, and then added as an afterthought, “and stop looking at me weird.”
“I’m not!”

••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE BONDAGE CLUB is the third instalment in Alexandrea Weis’s adult, contemporary erotic romance series. This is writer/publisher Hunter Donovan and editor Cary Anderson’s storyline. Although this is the third book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any problems.

The focus of the storyline is publishing house ‘Donovan Books’ and Hunter Donovan’s desire to break into the world of erotic publication. With the publishing house floundering without a competitive edge, Hunter seizes the opportunity to bring together an erotica author and a new editor for a publishing line that takes everyone at Donovan Books out of their comfort zone and into something new.

Enter Cary Anderson, a woman who knows a thing or two about the erotic publishing industry. As an editor and a woman with first hand information and knowledge of erotica storylines, Cary helps push Donovan Books into mainstream sexual novels with her contacts in the business and close friendship with an erotica author. But Cary has a secret, one that Hunter is the last to figure out, and it is this secret that will find Cary and Hunter at odds when the truth is finally revealed.

The relationship between Cary and Hunter is one of forbidden love. Hunter is Cary’s boss but their attraction to one another makes for some steamy scenes. While Cary tries to get Hunter out of his ‘vanilla’ habits, Hunter will learn that sometimes a relationship comes with a price. Hunter and Cary are colorful characters but none more so than Cary who tries to push Hunter into a world he knows nothing about. There are moments of humor, heartbreak, emotional upsets and questioning motives, and in this Cary has some explaining to do when all was said and done.

The secondary characters include Hunter’s family and the people who work at Donovan Books. We had previously met Donovan’s brother Chris Donovan in the first instalment Cover to Covers. We will get a closer look at the man and his methods in the world of book publication. The world building remains focused around publishing and erotic temptations, but also pulls the storyline back to New Orleans where our leading characters will find comfort and a happily ever after.

The Bondage Club is a storyline that invites the reader into the world of erotic fiction. From conception to research; publication and presentation Alexandrea Weis tells the tale of two people with a purpose in life and a similar end goal in mind-to be successful in a world already dominated by a plethora of similar storylines. Everyone needs an edge in the publishing business and Donovan Books has perhaps found just the edge that it needs.

excerpt

The veil of evening was reaching across his office window when Hunter’s cell phone on the side of his desk rang. Checking the caller ID, he frowned when he saw that the number was blocked.
“This is Hunter Donovan,” he barked into the phone.
“Do you always answer the phone in such a cheerful manner?” a seductive female voice reprimanded.
“That depends on who this is.”
“Cary told me of your little meeting today, and your interest in my next book. You don’t waste any time do you?”
Hunter’s heart skipped a beat. “Well, well, Ms. Slut. Nice to hear your voice again. I hope your time at the Book Expo was worthwhile.”
“You were the highlight of my trip, Mr. Donovan.”
Hunter smiled as he sat back in his creaky desk chair. “I’m so glad. I was beginning to think you didn’t like me.”
“Have you ever met a woman who didn’t like you?”
The question made Hunter chuckle. “Which answer will get me your next book, Ms. Slut?”
A high-pitched tinkling laugh came through the speaker of his iPhone, making Hunter’s stomach flutter ever so lightly. “I like a man who doesn’t waste time with sweet talk. Check your email. I just sent you the manuscript. It’s called The Bondage Club, and if you’re interested, e-mail me a contract, and I will look it over.”
“Can I ask what it’s about? I mean, with a title like that I can guess, but….” His voice faded as his curiosity rose.
“There are many different kinds of bondage, Mr. Donovan, that don’t involve ropes, chains, or even handcuffs.”
Hunter gaped at his cell phone. “I don’t get it.”
“Love can be a form of bondage,” she explained. “We can get tied to someone just as easily as we can be tied up by someone. The book is about bondage in all of its forms.”
“Then I look forward to reading it.” He paused as he thought of an idea. “But why not come to my office? We can discuss the details of the contract over lunch,” he pursued with a hint of insistence in his voice.
“I don’t think so. Lunch with you would be dangerous.”
Hunter coyly smiled. “For which one of us, Ms. Slut?”
“I’m not your type, Mr. Donovan.”
Hunter’s body rippled with the hint of a challenge. “You never know; if Donovan Books handles your novel, we may grow on each other.”
“I hope not. Getting involved with the man who publishes my book would complicate matters. I’m also a very demanding author. I might get on your nerves after a time.”
“I have a lot of demanding authors. You would fit right in.”
“Do you usually try and date your authors, or will I be the first?”
He fingered a corner of the manuscript open on the desk before him as his imagination began to wander. “You would be the first. I never date clients.”
“I heard a nasty little rumor to the contrary, about your brother and Monique Delome. They were engaged and then she up and married some Texas oil man. Lucky girl.”
“Lucky to be rid of my brother,” Hunter returned, pushing the manuscript in front of him to the side.
“Oh, do I detect a note of sibling rivalry, Mr. Donovan?”
He leaned back in his chair and turned his eyes to his arched window. “Rivalry, nah. More like deep-seated hatred. And if I’m going to bare my soul to you, you should start calling me, Hunter.”
“Let me guess, Hunter.” Her voice was throaty and delicious, spurring on his desire. “He stole your Legos when you were six and you have never forgiven him.”
Hunter ran his hand over his face, feeling the conversation was getting a little too personal. “Never mind my brother. Let’s talk about you.”
“I make it a practice never to talk about myself. The less people know about me, the better.”
“I don’t agree, Ms. Sl….” Hunter crinkled his brow. “What else can I call you? Ms. Slut is too—”
“Call me Smuttie, if you like.”
“Smuttie…don’t you have a real name?”
“Smuttie is all you need to know.” The sound of voices in the background broke in. “Let me know what you think of my manuscript, Hunter. I’ll be waiting to hear from you.” Then the line went dead.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 21, 2014

Former Marine MacArthur Patton has made a small fortune on top-secret government contracts and black-ops missions, but his new assignment involves something more dangerous—marriage.

Well, fake marriage anyway.

To keep weapons out of the hands of terrorists, Mac has to secure a fiancée. A sweet, demure, compliant fiancée to serve as his arm candy for a few weeks while he completes the covert arms deal in Mexico. His sister claims to know just the woman, and sends her best friend to play the role.

“Sweet” and “demure” aren’t in Kelli Landers’s repertoire. A badass veterinarian who neuters big dogs and bigger men on a regular basis, she can’t wait to bring Mr. Tall-Dark-and-Detached to his knees. Her longtime crush on the commitment-phobe makes her plan to seduce him even sweeter.

Love wasn’t part of the plan, but the deeper Mac and Kelli fall into their ruse, the more danger they attract, until more than just their hearts are on the line…

•••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: FIANCEE FOR HIRE is the second instalment in Tawna Fenske’s adult contemporary Front and Center erotic romance series. This is former marine MacArthur (Mac) Patton and veterinarian Kelli Landers’s storyline. Mac and Kelli were first introduced in the first instalment ‘Marine for Hire’-Mac is Sheri’s brother and Kelli is Sheri’s best friend. Although this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without too much difficulty.

The focus of the storyline is Mac’s need for a ‘fake fiancee’. Under cover, working on an illegal arms deal, Mac let it be known to his contacts in Mexico that he was newly engaged. Needing someone to portray his fake fiancée, Mac looks to his sister’s best friend Kelli. Little does Mac realize but Kelli has had a crush on Mac since she was a young girl.

The relationship between Mac and Kelli is one born of necessity that turns into something more. Both Mac and Kelli are afraid of commitment; afraid of losing someone they love; and afraid to allow anyone close enough to inflict heartbreak and pain. Mac barely remembers Kelli as his sister’s best friend and discovering there is more to Kelli than a pony-tailed little girl, leaves Mac reeling with emotions he cannot explain. Playing along with the impending nuptials, Kelli and Mac find themselves thrown into dangerous situations where Mac nearly loses Kelli on numerous occasions. Someone is out to destroy Mac’s plans using Kelli as a pawn in an arms deal that goes terribly wrong.

Tawna Fenske pulls the reader into a story of forbidden love between two people who go into the fake relationship knowing that nothing will ever come of it in the end. But like everything in life, nothing is ever a given when Kelli and Mac open their eyes and hearts to the possibility of a happily ever after.

FIANCEE FOR HIRE is a fast paced, erotic and intimate look at a relationship built upon a lie. The secondary characters include Mac’s mother Stella and brother Grant, as well as the armed players in a game of terrorism and weapons deals. Mac’s sister Sheri makes an appearance as the go-to woman for her best friend when things begin to heat up between Kelli and Mac.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 15, 2014

When literary agent Tracy Ratcliffe travels to the sleepy village of Wentworth Cove, Maine, for a much-needed vacation, the most excitement she’s expecting is a sunset walk along the beach. Instead, she hears about a portrait of a woman who looks suspiciously like her that has hung in the local art gallery for years, even though she’s never set foot in Wentworth Cove before. Tracy also meets handsome Nathan Norsworthy, a moody aspiring novelist who takes her breath away. Nathan helps her deal with the suspicion that the man she knew and loved as her father probably wasn’t. That is, until she begins to suspect that Nathan is using her to break into the world of publishing

••••••••••••

Review: ANOTHER SUMMER by Rebecca Stevenson is a contemporary novella. Tracy is a workaholic, who is in Maine for a much needed vacation. She needs time to relax and find the world’s best clam chowder! She is a literary agent in Boston and has neglected her personal life along the way. She soon meets some wonderful locals including the moody gorgeous Nathan.

Turns out that a simple summer vacation might unlock some family secrets and the man she is falling in love with, might be using her for her publishing connections. What’s a girl to do? I can’t reveal too many plotline twists, because it’s a short read as it is!! Tracy’s character needed a little more development and I do think that we needed to see more of the romance. Hey, I love my “happy ever afters”!! I would recommend this novella for any reader who wants to read a short but sweet story. I just think that it was a tad too short. I wanted MORE!

Shifter's Claim

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / The Book Depository

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date July 29, 2014

Sebastian Perry, gorgeous shape-shifter, has tremendous guilt. Completely disarmed by his momentary hesitation to save a woman, he has fallen into despair. Sworn as a shifter to protect any female in danger, no amount of status, success, or money, can make him feel right again. Prowling around his domain, Bas aches to feel complete, to feel alive, to feel the love of a female. But what woman could possibly trust a man, shifter or not, that cannot protect her?

Priya Drake is tired of fending for herself. Growing up in a family that had nothing but problems, she’s made it to a top newspaper as a reporter, only to continually get snubbed by her boss. When she accidentally witnesses Bas shift, she knows she’s sitting on the scoop that will make her career. But telling the story isn’t so simple. She needs to get her facts straight, and the mounting attraction between her and Bas isn’t helping one bit. Priya thinks she has everything under control, but as the nights get hotter and danger continues to mount, Priya has to ask herself—can she betray the man she loves?

REVIEW: SHIFTER’S CLAIM is the fourth instalment in A.C.Arthur’s adult, contemporary The Shadow Shifters paranormal romance series focusing on a group of feline shifting jaguars originally from the Amazon. This is millionaire resort owner and jaguar Shadow Shifter Sebastian Perry and newspaper reporter (and human) Priya Drake’s storyline. Although this is the fourth in the series, it can be read as a stand alone but I would suggest reading the series from the beginning to understand all of the lingo etc.

Told from two close third person POVs the focus of the storyline is two fold: Priya is a reporter who suspects that there are shifters among the humans and she has been forced to gather information about their existence. Priya’s involvement has more to do with a threat against someone she loves then revealing the truth about shapeshifters. While Priya looks for answers, Sebastian and his team are called in to investigate a shipment of designer drugs that may be connected to a government facility known as Comastaz Labs, and a rogue band of jaguar shifters. When Priya and Sebastian collide, fur will fly when ‘Bas’, as he is called, denies that Priya is his ‘companheiro’ or mate.

Shifter’s Claim is a detailed storyline that is somewhat dependent on prior knowledge of the series but saying that, it can be read as a stand alone with some minor confusion to previous history. The jaguar shifters have a ruling government not unlike many national political systems and in this the storyline and premise follows a strict guideline of principles and rules. The secondary characters play a major role throughout the story including most of the previous storyline shifters who all have a specific job description. There is a small index at the beginning of the novel that gives some of the definitions and descriptions.

A.C. Arthur pulls the reader into a compelling and imaginative storyline where two people struggle with their attraction to one another. Priya is on a mission to gather information for an unknown source; and Sebastian must stay true to the laws of the shifters and never reveal their existence to human kind. Although Bas’s jaguar knows that Priya is their mate, Sebastian refuses to recognize the call to mate because he knows that he would only bring pain and sorrow to any woman that is connected to him.

Shifter’s Claim is a seductive, intense and spirited storyline of heartbreak and betrayal; family and love; suspense and action. The Shadow Shifter series takes a passionate look at a species whose goal is to survive in a world dominated by human bigotry and specieism, and through it all, each individual shifter will discover that there is someone out there who is the other half to their soul; who must risk love and a happily ever when all around them someone is trying to take them down.

•••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: HER TEMPORARY HERO is the second instalment in Jennifer Apodaca’s (aka Jennifer Lyon) adult, contemporary Once A Marine romance series focusing on a group of ex-Marines and the women that they love. This is Becky Holmes and Logan Knight’s storyline.

Becky is a single mother on the run from her ex boyfriend. Logan is a man who needs a wife before he turns thirty otherwise the land that was promised to him, reverts back to his father. When Logan’s cousin Luce finds a temporary home for Becky and her daughter, she has knowingly pushed the couple into one another’s arms-for better or for worse. As Logan’s dream for setting up a rehab centre for recovering veterans begins to materialize, someone from Logan’s past brings everything to a halt when the truth is finally revealed.

The relationship between Becky and Logan begins as a mutual agreement but soon turns to something more. Becky and Logan marry and for all intents and purposes they are husband and wife-for three months. But life has other plans as Logan begins to fall in love with Becky and her daughter knowing that without his little family life would not be worth living. When Becky’s ex finally tracks her down, everything begins to fall apart when lives are threatened and Logan’s family believes that Becky has taken everyone for a ride. Logan’s family has lots of money and Becky is the perfect excuse to control Logan from the other side.

Jennifer pulls the reader into a romantic story where two people brought together out of necessity remain together out of love. The secondary characters include Logan’s family including half-sisters, step-mother and dad. Logan’s dad is a piece of work, one that doesn’t go unnoticed by his family or Logan’s wife.

HER TEMPORARY HERO is a sweet, romantic and seductive storyline. There is a little bit of cowboy in our hero-a former marine who needs the open spaces and land as much as the recovering soldiers-and in this, we are pulled into the nightmares and memories of war that is still claiming too many heroes and loved ones.

excerpt

At the same second the bathroom door opened, spilling out a billow of steam and a man wearing nothing except a towel loosely wrapped around lean hips. Above that was a rippled abdomen spreading into a muscular chest and shoulders that filled the doorway. On his left bicep he had a tattoo of a horse kneeling before a white cross draped with dog tags.

That tat tugged at her heart. He’d lost someone, and she understood how deep that pain went.

“Oh.” The word squeaked out of her involuntarily. She was tall, nearly five ten, but she had to look up to see his unusual light green eyes that stood out against his darker skin and black hair.

“Need something?”

Even his voice was sexy, pitched low and oh-so-masculine. Really? After a year of her sex drive lying dormant, now her hormones noticed a man?

Title: Cheating Justice
Series: The Justice Team (#2)
Authors: Misty Evans and Adrienne Giordano
Release Date: July 21, 2014
Genre: Romantic Suspense

About the book:
While investigating a government cover-up, former FBI agent Mitch Monroe is framed for murder. A wanted man, Mitch has no choice but to stay off the grid, and he needs Special Agent Caroline Foster—the FBI’s top sniper and a woman who wants nothing to do with him—to clear his name.

After sharing a single night of simmering passion with Mitch a year ago, Caroline hasn’t been able to get him out of her head. Or her heart. He’s jeopardized her job once…helping him now could end her career. But a friend has been murdered, and no matter how Caroline feels about Mitch, he’s not the killer. She needs answers, and she needs Mitch Monroe out of her life once and for all.

On the run and with no one to turn to, Mitch and Caroline can’t fight the reigniting passion between them. She’ll lose her career if she proves Mitch is innocent…he’ll lose his life if she doesn’t.

••••••••••••••••••••••••

Review:

Wow is the first word that comes to mind. Cheating Justice begins with Mitch Monroe meeting with one of the few people in the world whom he knows he can trust. But when that person ends up dead and Mitch’s face is plastered all over the news as wanted for his murder, he knows he has to step up his game and figure out what is going on and why they are involving him. He makes the hard decision to go to the one person who can help him. Or, break his heart…………….

Caroline has her path plotted. Top sniper? Check. S.W.A.T.? Working on it. Dots her I’s and crosses her T’s? Absolutely. So, why then, when Mitch Monroe shows up does she feel the need to help him? Yes, she knows he’s an innocent man. But, when he tries to enlist her help to not clear himself, but to clear one of his best friends who has been murdered, she has one answer for him. No. Yeah right…………

Cheating Justice pulls you in from the beginning. Mitch Monroe is an awesome person who you find yourself cheering for from the first time you meet him. His angst over his friends’ demise lets you get a glimpse of the real Mitch. Well, part of him. The other part….the sarcastic, smart, sexy part is the first thing you notice, but once the story progresses, you see more layers developing right before your eyes. Caroline made me laugh out loud, literally. She’s always threatening to shoot folks who tic her off. Yes, she’s buttoned up and a very astute agent, but as with Mitch, you see her layers developing as well. It doesn’t take her long to figure out that maybe the straight and narrow might not be all it’s cracked up to be. And, the chemistry between the two? Smoking hot!!!

The action in this book is awesome as well! I couldn’t wait to see what happened next as I was reading it. I will say, though, that I did get a little blurry eyed trying to remember who all the bad guys were and how they were all tied together. But, in the end?? Awesome story!! Had no idea this was part of a series, but I will tell you, based on this one, I’d love to go back and read the first one and can’t wait for the second. Well done ladies, very well done.

excerpt

“I always said you had the best ass in the FBI.”
Her body froze. Eleven months, five days and—she did the math—twelve hours had passed since she’d heard that voice. The one she’d thought about time and again after his last brief visit to her apartment, and she still managed to be equal parts pissed off, concerned and flat-out heartbroken. That voice could only belong to one person. Thus the remark about her ass and—wow—she always knew he had a set of stones, but this was too much even for Mitch Monroe. The man she’d spent all these months trying to forget. Months of burying herself in cases, months of begging her boss for every available opportunity to keep her mind occupied, months of a busy life that didn’t allow for downtime.
Or thoughts of Mitch.
Without turning, she picked up her weapon. “Well, look what the cat dragged in. A girl puts her career on the line for you and you don’t call, you don’t write, nothing. To say the least, your technique needs work.”
And then he laughed. She’d waited months to hit him with that line and he laughed. Classic Mitch. She closed her eyes and—forget that he was a federal fugitive now wanted for murder—she’d kill him herself and be done with the whole affair.
Mitch, a murderer? She couldn’t believe it. No matter what the White House was spinning about Kemp Rodgers’ death, Mitch wouldn’t kill his friend.
Then, again, she’d been Mitch’s friend once…
Finally, she turned, bracing herself for whatever disguise might greet her, but found none. Brave.
As usual.
She took in his long brown hair pulled back in a low ponytail, his dark eyes and ripped jeans, and shook her head. “You’re insane for coming here.”
He shrugged. “It’s a private range. Not like I walked into Quantico.”
It wasn’t enough that he’d almost destroyed her career when he’d first started working The Lion case, now he wanted to have a second go at it. He was a fugitive wanted for murder and she was an FBI agent. She should arrest him.
Yet, she stood waiting for him to say something that would make a damned difference. I’m sorry? I didn’t do it? Anything that would erase the idea that he could have murdered his friend.
She set her rifle on the table behind her, slid the bolt open. Not loaded. She knew it wasn’t, but she checked anyway. Always.
Mitch shuffled behind her.
Too bad. He could wait like she’d waited for him all these months.
Her canvas carry case sat on the bench seat. Like many people, she preferred canvas over hard plastic because the softer material didn’t make the rifle sweat. She dug through the case for her lens covers, popped them on, set the rifle into the case—bolt upward—and zipped it.
She’d clean the rifle later. For her, keeping a weapon in top working order meant cleaning it after every use. Even if only one shot had been fired, her weapons got cleaned. Every time.
She sensed Mitch moving closer, stirring the air around her, upsetting the energy, letting her know he was near. He had that way about him. Sometimes good, sometimes not.
“I need your help.”
Of course he did. Should have known. Radio silence for eleven months and now he wanted her help. “I should shoot you and dump your body in the Reflecting Pool.”
“Yeah, you should.”
She spun and—crack!—smacked him, sending his head sideways and making her hand sting. She’d never physically attacked anyone before and she couldn’t say it felt right or just, but unleashing it felt good. To let him know he’d hurt her. “We were friends. I helped you and you disregarded me.”
“Disregarded you?” Mitch slid a hand over his cheek. “I’ve stayed away and I’m sorry. But what, Caroline? You want to do lunch or hit the shooting range with me? A guy wanted for assaulting your boss and now a federal fugitive?” Gently, he knocked on her head. “Think about it. I was protecting you.”
She didn’t need his protection. “I’m mad at you.”
“Atta girl.”
God, he was annoying. “You had a good reason to take a swing at Donaldson when he threatened you during The Lion case, but honest to God, Mitch, I think he should have swung back and ended it right there instead of trying to throw you in jail. But you should have manned up and never run from the charges, so whatever this is, I can’t help you.”
“Tommy Nusco.”
“You murdered him, too?”
Surprisingly, he blanched. “I didn’t kill anyone. I need to know what went down with Tommy.”
Oh, please. He really had lost his mind if he thought she’d touch that subject. That involved ATF and the State of New Mexico and she wasn’t about to step into that snake pit. “You better worry about what went down with Kemp Rodgers and why the White House is after you. Turn yourself in, Mitch.”
“Kemp told me the White House is buzzing about Executive Privilege being invoked on Tommy’s case. A few hours later, he’s dead. Put two and two together, Caroline. There’s a cover-up in the works and what happened to Tommy is at the heart of it.”
She faced him, still hating that he stood a good six inches taller and managed to make her feel small. She folded her arms and stepped forward, got right into his space. “No.”
“Whatever they’re concocting about Tommy is bullshit.”
“I don’t know that.”
“Yeah, you do. When we all worked together, we hung out. You knew him.”
“Not that well.”
He rolled his eyes in that typical I’m-Mitch-Monroe-and-I’m-bored way of his. “He was not dirty. Whatever he was doing, the government is letting a dead agent take the heat. Why not? He’s dead anyway. Doesn’t matter that he was a decorated officer. The government obviously needs to clean up a mess and—” he inched closer, tilted his head and stared right into her eyes “—I know all about how the government cleans up a mess.”
Back away. She should, but that would play into what he wanted. He wanted to control this conversation. His looming presence used to be enough that she’d give him that control.
Not this time.
She tilted her head the opposite direction, eased out a half-smile. “Mitch?”
“Yes?”
“Screw you.”
She turned her back to him and scooped up her rifle case. Right now, she needed to walk away and not let him talk her into something that would wreck her career.
