ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date May 6, 2014

When life gets tough and love is hard to find, four friends take their troubles to lunch. Surviving a failed marriage and an illness that almost takes her life, high school teacher Mallory Hamilton needs the Ladies Who Lunch more than ever . . .

After a year of upheaval, Mallory has had her fill of change—with one exception. Her house is a disaster, and she wants it fixed. Hiring a contractor to finish the projects her ex-husband started will help her banish the past so she can return to the life she had before everything went awry. But her contractor is sexy, sweet, and single, which threatens the peaceful, solitary life Mallory has planned for herself.

Ben Carpenter has had a hard time raising his daughter without his ex-wife’s help. His new client’s projects will give him the extra income he needs, not to mention afternoons alone with a gorgeous woman. Though their attraction is undeniable, Ben sees the fear and pain hiding in Mallory’s beautiful eyes. But how can he help her if she won’t let him in? Ben can fix just about anything—but can he fix Mallory’s broken heart?

••••••••••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE BOTTOM LINE is the first instalment in Sandy James’s contemporary, romance series focusing on a group of female teachers who meet every day at lunch to discuss life, love and growing old. This is Mallory and Ben’s storyline-one the focuses on a second chance at love for both but not before heartbreak and misunderstanding push the couple apart.

Sandy James writes an engaging story where one woman has faced a life altering situation and survived. Hoping for a new direction, she hires local contractor Ben Carpenter to remodel her house and in doing so finds that she begins to remodel her life. Ben and Mallory are immediately attracted to one another but Mallory is hiding a secret-one that even many of her fellow colleagues are unaware-and it is a secret she fears will push Ben away when the truth is revealed.

This is a friends to lovers storyline where second chances are complicated when past issues are left unresolved. Mallory’s private and personal ‘problems’ drive a major portion of the storyline and in this there is a constant struggle about decisions, revelations and between friends. Although her friends mean well and are very over protective, there comes a time when everyone must make their first solo venture into the world of dating and love. The sexual tension between Mallory and Ben is palpable; their love making is sensual, romantic and not over the top.

The secondary characters are colorful and become our heroine’s constant source of support and turmoil. The world building focuses on the friends and colleagues who gather each day for lunch and on weekends at the local church singles dance.

THE BOTTOM LINE is a compelling story about one woman’s struggle and the decisions she must make with regards to her future. It is a story where past betrayals are a constant reminder and sometimes the present may be all you have. It is also a story about two people who have been given a second chance-for love and life-and their hopes that a future together will be loving and long.

Interview

TRC: Hi Sandy and welcome to The Reading Cafe. Congratulations on the release of THE BOTTOM LINE.

Sandy JamesFollow Sandy at :  Website / Goodreads / Twitter / Facebook

TRC: We would like to start with some background information. Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Sandy: I’m a teacher, a job that’s becoming more challenging by the day thanks to “the powers that be.” It wasn’t my intended profession. I always believed I’d be a lawyer. But children came faster than my husband and I expected, so I chose a career that would give me more time with my daughter and son. It was the right decision, something I’m reminded of every time I step in front of a class.

Somewhere in my late twenties, I started having odd physical symptoms ranging from thyroid problems to rashes to swollen joints to horrible fatigue. After years of having no idea what was wrong, to the point everyone—including me—believed I might be a hypochondriac, I was finally diagnosed with lupus. I make a point of mentioning it on my website, during interviews, and whenever I conduct workshops, because I think it’s important to show other lupus sufferers that you can still have a productive life despite this damned illness.

TRC: How do you handle the pressures of being a high school teacher and writing romance on the side?

Sandy: My children are both grown, married, and living their lives, which means my nest is empty. My husband and I moved to a smaller home last summer. It’s been such a great change. The place is so easy to clean, and with just the two of us, there’s not nearly as much to do. That helps considerably. Being a teacher actually helps my writing career since we’re off in June and July. Our school also dismisses at 2:30, which gives me a lot of afternoon time to write.

TRC: You and your husband own a small racing stable of Standard bred Harness horses. How did you venture into the Harness racing business?

Sandy: When Jeff and I were first married (back in the Stone Age), we lived in Chicago. The only person we knew there was my cousin. At the time, she was married to one of the best harness drivers in the country. Since we began to spend a lot of time together, Jeff and I learned to enjoy the sport.

Around his fortieth birthday, he started researching owning a horse. He’s such a great guy, I wanted to help him chase the dream. So after he explained it all to me, I went to the bank to get a loan to help him buy that first horse. It’s become such a great part of our lives. Not only do we both love the animals, the people in the racing world are such a kick to be around.

TRC: Have you ever considered a series focusing on horse racing?

Sandy: I actually wrote Murphy’s Law to share my love of harness racing with my readers. The horses also appear in All the Right Reasons. But I have a new series my agent is pitching to editors right now that goes back to the track! (Shameless plug—Both those books are in The Damaged Heroes Collection, which is only 99 cents for all five books right now.)

The Bottom LineTRC: THE BOTTOM LINE is your May 2014 release in The Ladies Who Lunch series. Would you please tell us something about the premise?

Sandy: There’s a lot of my life in this series. I have eaten lunch with my own “Ladies” for several years, so it seemed like a great tribute to them and their friendship to include that kind of relationship in my stories.

The Ladies Who Lunch is a group of four teachers who are tightly bonded. The reader gets to see life through their eyes. I love that the heroines are different ages (in their twenties and thirties) and have such distinct personalities.
The Bottom Line explores the issue of what it’s like to be a breast cancer survivor. Two of my own “Ladies” have weathered that choppy ocean, and I tried to honor their strength and grace in the character of Mallory.

TRC: Are any of the characters or the storyline premise based in reality?

Sandy: In some ways, all my characters have a basis in reality. I never model a character after a distinct person, but when I have a friend, relative, or student who has a distinct personality or trait, I often incorporate that into my characters. The only heroine who I can say is “me” is Jackie Delgado from Turning Thirty-Twelve. I channeled myself quite strongly into her.

Signed Sealed DeliveredTRC: SIGNED, SEALED, DELIVERED is the next instalment in The Ladies Who Lunch Series. Would you please tell us about the premise and whose storyline it will be?

Sandy: Juliana gets the spotlight in Signed, Sealed, Delivered. Her story heats up very quickly when she starts to explore the possibility of leaving teaching for a more lucrative job, a crossroads many teachers face. At a real estate seminar, she meets Connor, a man who inspires her in many, many ways.

TRC: How many books do you have planned for the series?

Sandy: The series is four books—one for each of my Ladies. Any expansion on it would be about the small town in which they live, Cloverleaf, Illinois. I love writing about small town life! This town is based loosely on my in-laws’ hometown of Mt. Carmel, Illinois.

TRC: What are your thoughts on writing a series and ending an instalment with a major cliff hanger?

Sandy: I think it’s horrible! One thing I believe readers depend upon is a writer to leave them satisfied at the end of a story. A cliffhanger is almost cruel to readers!

I also like writing “closed” series. Two of mine—The Ladies Who Lunch and The Alliance of the Amazons—are limited to four books. There’s a distinct ending to each of the books, and the last book wraps up all four of the stories as well.

TRC: When writing a storyline, do the characters direct the writing or do you direct the characters?

Sandy: Sometimes I think the characters are more in charge than I am. I always have a plan in mind, but writing can become such an adventure. For example, Ross in Murphy’s Law and Free Falling is named after a former student who wanted me to give a villain his name. I tried to make Ross a bad guy, a shyster lawyer in Murphy’s Law. I honestly tried. But the fictitious Ross would have none of it. He was such a good character and nice guy he became the hero in Free Falling.

TRC: The mark of a good writer is to pull the reader into the storyline so that they experience the emotions along with the characters. What do you believe a writer must do to make this happen? Where do you believe writer’s fail in this endeavor?

Sandy: The characters have to be “real” to the writer. I think my background in psychology helps me tremendously in creating realistic characters. To achieve this, a writer needs to feel what the characters are feeling. I know when I’m writing happy scenes, I’m in a great mood. Writing black moments almost always makes me look at life in a pessimistic way. I ride the same roller coaster every character rides throughout a story.

Where do writers fail? Whenever a character is so wooden she becomes cliché. I’ve read a few stories where the heroes or heroines were all but cardboard, because nothing they did or felt seemed authentic. As I said, knowledge of psychology is the best tool, which is why I started teaching psychology workshops for authors.

TRC: Writer’s Block is a very real phenomenon. How do you handle the pressures and anxiety of writer’s block?

Sandy: I need to knock on wood as I say this, but I’ve never had writer’s block. When my agent started selling books on proposal (three chapters and a synopsis) rather than as a completed manuscript, I worried whether I’d be able to write with my “back to the wall.” Turns out that deadlines are highly motivating for me!

There’s always a touch of anxiety in my writing process, but I attribute that to my being such a superlative Type A personality. I like being busy. I love being super busy. But the baggage to that is there’s always an element of anxiety involved.

TRC: What challenges or difficulties (research, logistics, background) did you encounter writing this particular story and series?

Sandy: The Ladies Who Lunch might be a tightknit group of friends, but their situations are unique. I’ve had to research breast cancer treatments, the process of breast reconstruction, how to sell real estate, home renovation, adoption law… You name a topic, it probably pops up in The Ladies Who Lunch. Of course, variety is the spice of life. Right?

TRC: Many authors bounce ideas and information with other authors or friends and family. With whom do you bounce ideas?

Sandy: I’m blessed to have wonderful critique partners, all of whom are published authors. Cheryl Brooks is well-known for her Cat Star Chronicles, Nan Reinhardt writes great stories with mature heroines, and Sandra Owens has some marvelous historical romances close to release. I also have a friend/critique partner/cheerleader in Leanna Kay. The two of us have worked together since the very first book I wrote back in 2006.

TRC: On what are you currently working?

Sealing The DealSandy: I just wrapped up Sealing the Deal (Ladies Who Lunch book 3) and have shifted back to my historical series, Safe Havens. The fourth book will revolve around Kayla and Drake, characters introduced in Redeemed (book 3). Kayla has a major secret, one that is going to follow her to White Pines. Hopefully, my new horseracing series will find a good home soon! Then it’s “full steam ahead” on those books!

TRC: What three things would you like to accomplish in the next five years?

Sandy: I want to make the USA Today or NYT bestsellers’ list so badly! I’m trying to do my best to get word out there about my books through reviews and interviews (thanks again for hosting me today!), and hopefully, my momentum will continue.

As much as I enjoy teaching, I would love to be able to transition into being a full-time writer. The lupus makes being a good teacher a little tougher every day. The fatigue is the worst. If I could write full-time, I wouldn’t have to wake up so early, and if I needed a quick nap, I could take one.

TRC: What is something that few, if any people, know about you?

Sandy: I don’t have an abundance of self-esteem. I was overweight as a child, and I lived in an isolated neighborhood, so I didn’t know most of the kids at school the same way they all knew each other. I often felt like an outsider, and I was teased a lot for being chubby and not “fitting in.” I was also a horrible nerd, which only hurt my chance of being popular in any way, shape, or form. My first true friends came in junior high, and I’ve always been grateful to Angela and Karen for helping me start down the road of learning to like myself.

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Sandy: I just want to thank my entire family for their unending support. Getting a writing career off the ground isn’t easy, and without them, I’d never be where I am today.

SAVING GRACE (Safe Havens #1) by Sandy James

ebook FREE (for a limited time) Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Amazon.uk/ Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date June 1, 2013

Grace Riley is on the run—from her past and from her fears. The victim of a violent rape at the hands of a rich politician’s son, she must “disappear” to escape his constant attempts to recapture her. Moving from cattle drive to cattle drive as a cook, she avoids her tormentor for nearly twenty years. When she discovers that the brother she gave up for adoption after their mother died in childbirth was orphaned at an early age, she is frantic to verify that he’s safe. She tracks him to a cattle ranch in Montana.

Widower Adam Morgan owns the Twin Springs ranch, but finds himself falling into a life of loneliness. Although he enjoys spending time with his grown daughter and the two men he rescued when they were living on the streets, he longs to meet a woman he can love. Living in the Montana territory where men greatly outnumber women makes finding a new wife difficult. Weary of working cattle, he is ready to make some changes in his life.

Grace falls ill on her journey, but she manages to make it to the Twin Springs ranch where her brother is supposed to be living. Adam takes her in, concerned for her health and the reason she’s searching for one of his adopted sons. Their chemistry is immediate and intense, but can Grace heal from her past of pain and fear? When her secrets are finally revealed, can Adam forgive her deceptions and learn to love again?

••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: SAVING GRACE is the first instalment in Sandy James’s historical western, romance Safe Havens series. The series focuses on a tight knit group of friends and family from Montana in and around the 1880’s. There are two love stories building throughout Saving Grace: Grace Riley and Adam Morgan’s story; Matthew Riley (Grace’s brother) and Victoria Morgan (Adam’s daughter).

The premise follows Grace as she searches for her ‘brother’ Jake- given up for adoption twenty years earlier. Believing she has finally found the clues to her missing sibling, Grace runs into trouble when her past stops at nothing to keep Grace from running away. When Grace finds herself at the Twin Springs ranch where years earlier Jake had found a home, she will come face to face with her future and the man she would grow to love.

Adam Morgan is the personification of the perfect husband and mate. He is supportive, protective and although he knows the woman with whom he has fallen in love keeps buried a secret that results in numerous nightmares, Adam allows Grace the time to recover and more forward. But not too much time because Grace is being stalked and the man is obsessed with the woman he cannot have.

The second storyline focuses on Adam’s daughter Victoria and Grace’s brother Matthew-their relationship is a little more angst ridden as Matthew pushes all of Victoria’s proverbial feminist buttons. For a woman from the 1800s Victoria is an independent female who isn’t afraid to speak her mind, wear pants or get her hands dirty rustling up a few new horses for the farm. Their relationship is a bit more volatile as Matthew keeps pulling away with each encounter.

SAVING GRACE is a story of pure romance where one woman’s past can never be forgotten. From a rape at fourteen years of age to finally finding that special someone in her life, SAVING GRACE blends betrayal with heartache; truth with lies; moving on and letting go. Sandy James writes a sweet storyline of finding love and a happily ever after.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 2013

Forced to flee her abusive fiancé, Cassandra Shay’s disappearance into Montana territory is delayed when she discovers her fiancé and uncle’s plot to murder her illegitimate brother and another innocent cowboy.

Ty Bishop hates the Shays, but accompanies Jake Curtis to meet Jake’s newfound uncle, Derrick Shay. Ty’s suspicions are confirmed when he and Jake are imprisoned and left to drown. After Cassie frees them, the men travel with her for her own protection.

When they arrive in Montana, the locals are horrified to discover a Shay in their midst, but Ty is drawn to Cassie like no other and is determined to win her heart. Despite her strong attraction to Ty, Cassie knows she must keep her distance to protect him from the hired guns the Shays send to retrieve her.

But their love will not be denied, and they must fight for justice before forging their future together.

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: RUNAWAY is the second instalment in Sandy James’s historical western, romance Safe Havens series focusing on a group of friends and family in Montana. This is Cassie Shay and Ty Bishop’s story –one that advances the series approximately three to four years.

The premise follows Cassie as she uncovers a plot to murder Ty and his best friend Jake Curtis. Jake is the son of Grace Morgan and has been invited to meet his extended Shay family on the west coast. When Jake and Ty encounter a life or death situation, it will be a young twenty year old woman-Cassie Shay-who rescues the pair from their untimely demise. Cassie is a woman on the run but Ty will ensure that the only place she runs to will be to Montana –with him.

Ty’s attraction to Cassie is immediate although they are from different backgrounds, different class and different education. As they make their way across country, Ty begins to fall for the feisty Cassie Shay but getting his family and friends back home to accept her will be another problem-all together. Cassie comes from one of the most hated families and no one is willing to open their arms a woman whose family has threatened everyone they love.

Sandy James pulls the reader into a romantic storyline about two people from different walks of life-Ty believes he is not worthy of Cassie’s love and affection and, Cassie believes that she has placed everyone in danger with her presence and connection to the Shay family.

RUNAWAY is a story of heartbreak and betrayal; family and friends; love and letting go. Many of the previous storyline characters play secondary roles as well as the introduction of the next story hero-Caleb Young.

If you like a romantic storyline about a hard working cowboy and a strong willed heroine then RUNAWAY is the perfect read for a lazy afternoon.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 10, 2014

Sold into prostitution, Sara Fuller robs a client and flees to her brother in White Pines, Montana.

Anxiously awaiting his mail order bride, rancher Caleb Young is delighted when a beautiful woman steps off the stagecoach. A series of misassumptions soon finds the two taking their marriage vows.

When Sara discovers she isn’t Caleb’s intended bride, she hides her scandalous past and sets out to prove she can be a good wife. Caleb adores Sara but suspects her of hiding something very important. Despite Sara’s secrets, their love grows and a child is conceived.

When Caleb’s real bride arrives, their troubles begin, only to be compounded by the appearance of the man Sara robbed. Now the two lovers must discover whether their love is strong enough to survive the forces threatening to tear them apart.

••••••••••••••••••

REVIEW: REDEEMED is the third instalment in Sandy James’s historical western, romance Safe Havens series set in the 1880’s countryside of Montana. This is Sara and Caleb’s story. Sara is Ty Bishop’s sister and Caleb is Gideon’s brother –who were both introduced in book two Runaway. Sara is on the run and heads to Montana where she is hoping to find refuge with her brother but finds love and a future with a stranger who believes she is his mail order bride. The novel advances the series approximately one year.

The storyline focuses on Caleb and Sara’s building relationship as well as Sara’s struggle to keep the secrets about her past-in the past. Her history as a ‘whore’ runs too close to a Caleb’s own family secret and when the truth is revealed Caleb leaves his young wife alone to struggle with tending the farm and a new born baby. He is a man who believes he has been manipulated and betrayed but not once did he ever consider the circumstances of Sara’s past. Caleb’s selfishness puts his young bride’s health at risk as she is determined to keep the farm running without anyone’s help.

The relationship between Caleb and Sara is quick to build; a quick marriage and acceptance but not once did we feel the love between the couple until it was too late. Caleb is a man who believes his new wife to be an innocent and Sara is a woman who knows that once the truth is revealed, she will lose everything including the man with whom she has fallen in love.

I did have one small concern and it seems to have prevailed from storyline to storyline-this is a small town where everyone is willing to help out those in need; newcomers etc but once they discover the secrets; the past or the truth, these people are quick to judge, take offense and push away. Not quite neighborly when things turn bad.

Most of the previous storyline characters are present including Caleb’s brother Gideon; Ty and Cassie; Grace and Adam. The story is well paced, easy to follow and introduces the next potential single male looking for love.

Sandy James has written an enjoyable, romantic series where one storyline flows into the next. With the inclusion of previous storyline characters, there is a familiar feel to the time, the place and the people. Although each book can be read as a stand-alone I would recommend reading in order.

My income tax return says that I am a teacher. I had originally intended it to say “lawyer,” but romance, marriage, and motherhood set my life on a different course.

I’ve been married to Jeff James since 1983. Even after all these years, he is still the love of my life. Jeff and I have two grown children who make us proud every day.

My husband and I share another strong and wonderful interest that is not only a great part of our day-to-day lives but has also become a running theme throughout some of my books. We own a small racing stable of Standardbred Harness horses, pacers to be exact. We have always loved the sport and as our children grew up enough to have their own interests, Jeff looked into what it would be like to own a racehorse. We jumped into the sport with both feet and are loving every minute of it.

As another bit of personal information, I’d like to share that several years ago I was diagnosed with lupus. I know that there are others out there who either have had the same diagnosis or know someone who has. I’m sharing this because I want to encourage you all that chronic illnesses do not have to keep you down and out of the swing of life. I still teach, still work with my horses, have a wonderful family life, and am still able to spend hours at my laptop writing on my latest book.

I am blessed to be leading a life full of the things I like to do and people I love.

THE VOLATILE AMAZON (Alliance of the Amazons #4) by Sandy James

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 30, 2013

Sarita Neeraj has never felt like a real Amazon. Compared to the obvious strengths of her sisters, her Water powers seem small as her stature. She’s determined to prove herself—unfortunately, all that gets her is captured by an enemy.

Ian serves a twisted goddess, preferring this to an empty afterlife. He’s taken Sarita hostage to coax the other Amazons from their safe haven. But in his ancient Scottish castle, the passion and love Ian finds for Sarita resurrect his honor, until he chafes at the dark will of his mistress.

Sarita has finally found happiness—but before she can enjoy it, she’s “rescued” by her furious sisters. To save Ian from destruction at the hands of the Amazons, Sarita must risk wielding magick that could change her very nature. Only then can she prove the Water Amazon is the strongest of the four—and save them all from destruction.

Meet Earth, Fire, and Air in The Reluctant Amazon, The Impetuous Amazon, and The Brazen Amazon.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Alliance of the Amazons

REVIEW: THE VOLATILE AMAZON is the fourth and final installment in Sandy James’s Alliance of the Amazon series focusing on four ‘amazon sisters’ each with an elemental power-earth, fire, air and water-and the men they love. But as with many endings, there is also a beginning, and it appears there is a spin off series in the works for the Sons of Gaia.

Sarita is the water Amazon. Always considered the weakest of the four elemental Amazons due to her size and personality, Sarita endeavors to prove to the Alliance and the Sentinels that she is just as powerful and capable as the others. But her latest assignment will find Sarita falling for a man long thought dead, and a man who believes Sarita is someone else.

Once again, Sandy James continues to weave a story of ancient goddesses, demi-gods and mythology into a contemporary storyline of betrayal, power and revenge. Each Amazon has a goddess representative and with these comes the struggle for the ultimate control. When an ancient goddess continues to battle for supremacy, everyone and everything in her way will become fodder in a war between the ancient dieties. And it will take one small water Amazon to prove that that the love of your sisters and one man, may be all you need to fight the evil that is hell on earth.

The relationship between Sarita and Ian begins as a case of mistaken identity. Although Sarita will soon learn the exact nature of Ian’s errors, it will take a stronger Sarita to let go of the man who has stolen her heart. The sex scenes are sensual and hot; and the tension builds because we know that at some point their true identities and purposes will be revealed.

The previous storyline characters are present as are the gods and goddesses who continue to make the Amazon’s lives miserable. And the continued animosity between the four Amazon’s goddesses makes for some rather interesting insight into what feels like basic sibling rivalry –all in the name of power and control.

This is a story of betrayal and trust; heartbreak and sorrow; family loss and reunion.

Sandy James has written a wonderful conclusion to her Alliance of the Amazon series-a series with strong female leads who are empowered by the men and women in their lives. I am looking forward to what (I hope) is a spin off series focusing on the Sons of Gaia.

Sandy JamesMy income tax return says that I am a teacher.

I’ve added a link to Jeff’s website if you’d like to follow the progress of our horses.

Sandy James-Guest Post and Giveaway

Guest Post and Giveaway with author Sandy James

Guest Post-White and Aqua

Thanks to the Reading Café for letting me guest on their wonderful blog today!

I’m heading a bit controversial for this post. I want to talk about being a teacher and writing romance.

Couple Making LoveSome of you might be aware of the story of Judith Buranich. She’s an English teacher in Pennsylvania public high school. When a few parents discovered she was published in erotic romance, a witch hunt ensued, and she was threatened with termination by the school corporation. (When I checked for updated information, I discovered she overturned her firing on appeal. Good for her!)

I followed the story with fear and fascination, wondering if one day my name would be the one splashed all over the news for writing “that stuff.” (That’s a quote from one of the parents, who also implied Ms. Buranich might be looking at her son in an inappropriate fashion. For the love of… I cannot think of a more ridiculous insinuation.)

My first thought was that if a teacher wrote any other genre, would they pursue her with such vigor? What if she wrote true crime novels—one of the genres I’ve considered with my criminology degree? Would they assume she might have serial killer tendencies?

Obviously, I was worried about my own job in a public high school. I’ve taught psychology for eighteen years, and I love my job. When I wrote my first book, my son was a senior at my school. I watched all of his friends grow up, and I’ve always been very close to those kids. Being an extrovert, I shared with my students that I was having fun writing. They were supportive and a bit in awe that I not only finished that book but went on to make writing my second career. A lot of them love that I use their names for some of my characters.

Pen on KeyboardWhen I sold my first book, I went to my principal and explained that I really wanted to publish in my own name rather than using a pen name. But I did air my concerns that our rather conservative Indiana community might have a “problem” if the parents found out I wrote romance. I told him that there was nothing in the books I would be ashamed for my students to read—probably because I discuss human sexuality in psychology. I was comfortable with parents reading my books as well. After a discussion with our superintendent, my principal gave me his blessings. So I published Turning Thirty-Twelve under my real name. Then I preceded to publish ten more books with more on the way. Both my students and their parents have given me their encouragement, and several former students and parents have become my fans.

Flash forward to 2012. Our state has instituted a rather onerous method of evaluating teachers—something I’m sure many other teachers face in the day and age of kids being tested, tested, and tested some more to see if they’re learning. (Don’t even get me going on that!) We are observed at least five different times during the school year. While I have no problem with any administrator or parent coming into my room to see what I’m up to, I am aware that even good teachers have bad days. It’s just crappy luck if one of those unannounced visits is on one of those days. My first one was…

I’m a good teacher. I don’t say that with hubris. My students are the ones who enlightened me to that fact. They do so in their stellar performances on things like Advanced Placement exams and by telling me how easy college psychology is for them because of my classes. But on the day my boss came for a look-see, I was playing a review game much like Jeopardy with my students, and it didn’t go well. The kids weren’t highly motivated because it was close to Fall Break, so a couple of them—one immature kid in particular—were acting out. Suffice to say I got a bad evaluation, even though I did my best to correct the bad behavior.

Alliiance of the Amazons

Problem was that my fear of being fired from my job for writing romance novels immediately jumped into my thoughts. Was my evaluation bad because of the class clown being mouthy? Or was there something else going on? Was this going to become a pattern as those in power set up a plan to get rid of me because I write romance?

It’s a shame I even have to worry about something that silly, but I was worried. Really worried. So I brought the topic up in my meeting over that evaluation. Thankfully, I was reassured that the thought never crossed my boss’s mind. In fact, he told me that they use me as a great example to students about what someone is capable of achieving if she puts her mind to it. He also said it’s good to be able to claim a published author among the school’s faculty.

Teacher at Chalk boardTo say I was relieved is a sad understatement. And all my evaluations have been stellar after that because the students realized it was their behavior rather than my lack of teaching skill that was criticized. God love ’em, my kids like me, and the affection is wholeheartedly returned.

Have things changed since the Judith Buranich debacle? Or is my corporation just more tolerant? I’m not really sure. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Thanks again for allowing me to guest blog! It was a pleasure sharing my thoughts with all of you!

Alliance of the Amazon Series 1-3 by Sandy James-a review

Alliance of the Amazon Series 1-3 by Sandy James-2 reviews

THE RELUCTANT AMAZON (Alliance of the Amazons #1) by Sandy James

The Reluctant Amazon

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date September 2012

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO

REVIEW: THE RELUCTANT AMAZON is the first storyline in Sandy James’s Alliance of the Amazon series. The premise focuses on the background information about a female race of Amazonian elemental warriors-Earth, Water, Air and Fire and, how each member of the Alliance must work together with their fellow ‘sister warriors’ to put a stop to the end of the world. The storyline and series premise also pulls in mythological gods and goddesses, demigods and demons, and a hierarchy of power and control that is tested by the very Amazons trained to defend the world. But as the women are pulled together to locate three of their missing sisters, they will face betrayal and the pain of loss at the hands of one of their own.

Like many supernatural storylines, our heroine is not aware of her heritage or powers until a handsome immortal stranger takes her under his wing. Meeting her fellow warrior sisters, Rebecca soon realizes she is not on the same level of playing field as the others. As an Earth Amazon, it is her heritage to nurture and grow, and she has a difficult time mastering everything that she needs to know. But as the story progresses, Rebecca will discover that she is a leader as well as a warrior, and the others will eventually have to look to Rebecca for guidance and direction. We follow as the Amazon sisters are trained to defend and protect, fight for what they believe and, finally come to the realization that that trust must be earned and should not be given freely.

The relationship between Artair (Highland warrior Sentinel) and Rebecca is immediate but a relationship that may place everyone at risk as Artair’s attention and need to protect Rebecca moves his focus from the women he is supposed to train onto the woman who has stolen his heart. As the history of the Sentinels and Amazons unfolds, we are privy to Artair’s long history with the Amazon warriors and his desire to re-enter the human world. Artair believes it is time he retired but in doing so, he must give up the woman with whom he has fallen in love.

THE RELUCTANT AMAZON is an interesting storyline that blends mythology with a contemporary storyline. The different elemental Amazon’s are each ruled by a goddess specific to each bloodline, but the goddesses are not without some issues of their own. Sandy James weaves a tale that places an ancient warrior with a modern woman who has yet to discover her true self but when she does sometimes having too much power is never a good thing. The storyline has a little bit of romance, a little bit of sex, a little bit of action as well as betrayal, heartbreak and love. The story does not end on a cliffhanger but with the knowledge that the evil is still out there and the Amazon warriors will be needed once again.

The Impetuous Amazon (Alliance of the Amazon #2) by Sandy James-a review

The Impetuous Amazon

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date January 13, 2013

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO /

REVIEW: THE IMPETUOUS AMAZON is the second storyline in Sandy James’ Alliance of the Amazons series focusing on four female Elemental Amazon warriors and the men they love. The storyline continues to build on the introductory premise as Megan Feurer, the fire Amazon must learn to control her anger and her fire, or find herself powerless in a world haunted by demons, demigods, mythological goddesses and the walking dead. And to ensure Megan follows orders, Sentinel Johann Herrmann, the man who stirred the embers of Megan’s soul in book one, will shadow her every move as she endeavors to reign in her temper when things get out of hand. And to complicate matters, the truth about Megan’s heritage will reveal a deeper connection to the fire goddess than anyone could have imagined and place an invisible wall between Johann and Megan that may be impossible to overcome.

The storyline progresses as Megan and Johann must investigate the mysterious disappearance and deaths of a number of young women all seemingly connected to a popular singer. But it will be Megan that becomes his ultimate target when power and greed are his to command with the help of a number of supernatural powers.

As the title of the storyline implies, Megan is impetuous; a fiery redhead who is the epitome of fire, Megan’s temper and acidic personality fuels the fire that burns within the Amazon warrior. And our heroine hides a painful past –one of betrayal and rejection at the hands of a woman she once called aunt and mother. But as Megan learns to control her fire, she is unable to control her burning need for the man who is trying to keep the flames under control. Johann will learn first hand what it is to love and be loved by a fire Amazon, and without a shield, Megan’s burning love for her Sentinel may put an end to their relationship before it has a chance to begin.

Sandy James combines mythological goddesses and demons with a contemporary storyline that gifts another Amazon warrior with her mate. The world building is limited in this particular story, as most of the premise is character driven-and saying that many of the previous storyline characters play a pivotal role in the fight against evil. There is romance and love, sorrow and pain, action and suspense as well as the continuous animosity and rivalry amongst the goddesses that risks the lives of the men and women under their command. But the heroine was difficult to like at times-her attitude and personality left much to be desired and saying that-she was who she was because of her past.  I am definitely not excusing Megan’s acerbic characteristics because in the real world she would be told in no uncertain terms-where to go and how fast.  The Impetuous Amazon is an interesting and fascinating addition to The Alliance of the Amazon series by Sandy James.

The Brazen Amazon by Sandy James

The Brazen Amazon

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / Barnes and Noble / KOBO

Release Date May 6, 2013

REVIEW: THE BRAZEN AMAZON is the third storyline in Sandy James’s Alliance of the Amazon series focusing on four elemental Amazon warrior women. This is Gina Himmel’s storyline-the air Amazon.

Like the previous storyline, Gina is a strong-willed, independent and kick-a$$ heroine, but there is a softer side to Gina that has yet to emerge. Gina grew up less than feminine-a rough and tumble tomboy and believes herself unworthy of a man’s attention or love. But Gina will have two men vying for her heart: Richard (aka Dick) a former SOG (Son of Gaia): and the other, her most recent assignment-Zach Hanson. Zach is a computer genius and he is the next target of abduction in the struggle for world domination in the war between the gods and goddesses.

The battle for Zach’s invention will lead Gina and the Amazon warriors into a fight between good and evil, but who is fighting whom for domination? When friends present as enemies and enemies present as friends, Gina’s world will be thrown into chaos and Zach will be the unwitting pawn. But a ‘gift’ from the gods will have Zach deep in the heart of the conflict where the wrong move could prove disastrous for everyone.

The relationship between Zach and Gina is quick to build. The couple’s attraction to one another is instant but there is also someone else vying for Gina’s heart. When Richard becomes the odd-man out, sides will be chosen and betrayal will be the ultimate weapon against Gina in the battle for her love. But Gina only loves one man and she is willing to push him away to save both of them any future heartache.

THE BRAZEN AMAZON is another fast-paced well-written installment where the premise and storylines are female driven. There is always a fine line between strong –willed heroine and b*tch, but Sandy James treads carefully in this particular story. Alpha females are often subdued by the men in their lives, but Sandy’s Amazon warriors stay true to form-while not usurping the males- they become equals in their own right.
