REVIEW: AWAKENING is the fifth novella in Susan Kaye Quinn’s young adult Stories of Singularity dystopian, sci-fic series- a companion series to Quinn’s Singularity Series. AWAKENING can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

BACKGROUND: The ‘Singularity’ resulted in most of the world’s population transforming themselves into a hybrid known as the Ascended-part man/part machine but the few remaining humans become what is known as the Legacy-the true descendants of humankind. The Singularity series looks at the struggle between the Ascended and everyone else.

Told from first person point of view (Sister Amara) AWAKENING follows Sister Amara as she ‘awakens’ to the world around her. A combination of artificial intelligence and cloistered humanoids ‘created to touch the face of God’, Sister Amara and eleven other ‘clones’ just like her are in a constant state of hyper vigilance as each approaches the famed ‘awakening’. But as the ‘experiment’s continue each sister will inevitably fail to reach her potential, and the people in charge will do anything to avoid an experimental disaster. Sister Amara is one of the few who will reach her potential (and beyond), and with it will gain her freedom from the onslaught of constant pain and strive for perfection.

AWAKENING is an intriguing look at the world of Singularity. An interesting and powerful concept born of the mind of Susan Kaye Quinn that focuses on humanity’s desire to live forever.

Beyond the MythAmazon / B&N / Kobo

Description:
Darlene Stanton is an archeologist, born and raised in the field by her archeologist parents, along with her twin, Derek. They appear to have it all, fame and fortune, for they are top of their field. They are sought out for their expertise in the field and the prestige they bring to each job they do, which is why they have been hired to check out the myth and island where it originated. There is more to the myth than they expect.

Blond and beautiful, Darlene has hidden herself behind her work and an icy shield that is meant to keep people at bay. She discovers more than she can handle when they get caught up in the reality of the myth on the site she is working on with her brother.

Atl is one of the leader’s sons, and he wants nothing more than to marry his childhood sweetheart, until he meets Darlene. She is beautiful, spirited, and nearly more than he can handle in the beginning. She is also suffering from shock from all the changes she has been forced to face in the few days before they met.

Ripped from her home planet, forced into a relationship, and lifestyle that is totally alien to everything she knows, Darlene fights to regain some form of stability in her life, while Derek settles into their new lifestyles without a problem. It doesn’t help when the handsome man who owns her is so charismatic that she can barely keep her hands off of him. She knows he didn’t want her anymore than she does him, but there is nothing either of them can do to change things. How is she to face the reality of her life, beyond the myth?

Review:

Beyond the Myth by M.A. Abraham is a standalone Sci-Fi/Fantasy novel.  Darlene and Derek Stanton, brother and sister twins, are world renown archeologists.  They are famous, rich and always in demand; but they are selective and expensive in accepting jobs.  Despite her dire feelings, Darlene agrees with Derek to accept their next adventure on a newly discovered island that holds a mysterious myth.  When they begin exploring, they sense that this is not things they normally handle from the past, but something more advanced into the future. Derek will accidently touch one of the artifacts, which will bring them into a new world and change their lives forever.

Darlene and Derek are not only smart and independent, but they are both beautiful.  She being more distant and cold, and he being a fun loving playboy.  But in this new planet, things are totally different, and due to their attractive looks, they will be sold to another local area.  On a ship, they find that they have been promised as mates to the leader’s son and daughter.  Derek will adapt well, but Darlene will have a very hard time in an alien world, that takes away her freedom.  She finds Atl, her prospective mate, very attractive and he too is forced into this relationship.  But Atl turns out to be a great hero, and someone who loves the spirited, and feisty attitude of Darlene.  Just when she slowly begins to care about Atl, and finds herself learning more about helping with the land and the ship, the wool is pulled out from under her once again.   With Darlene’s help, the leader is able to return to their homeland after 1500 years, but the new King now has his eyes on Darlene, and will do anything to break up her and Atl.

Rather than tell too much more, what follows is an interesting story line, as well as a very nice romance. I really liked Atl, his father (leader), and sister.  Derek was also very good, especially being in a different world.  Darlene was the main character, and I liked her too. However, I did think at times I wanted to smack her, as her stubbornness was annoying.  Granted, her life was totally torn apart, but at times I found her continued refusal to adapt to Atl and his life irritating; but in the end, Darlene’s strength, smarts and independence will help them.  Overall, it was a great story line, and I am amazed by M.A. Abraham’s wonderful imagination in bringing us different & new stories.

•••••••••••••

REVIEW: THE SIX SAVIORS CHRISTMAS NOVELLA by Carly Fall focuses on three couples we have previously met throughout the SIX SAVIORS sic-fi, paranormal, romance series. All three couples are struggling in their current relationships; all of the short stories take place a few days prior to Christmas, and all run parallel to the events in one another.

Some Series Background: 6 saviors warriors from planet SR44: Rayner, Hudson, Noah, Cohen, Jovan & Talin were sent to earth over 220 years ago to stop and eradicate the 12 murderers who escaped from one of the moon colonies of planet SR44. The Colonists, as they were soon called, made their way to Earth, took the human body form, mated with the females and populated the earth with Colonist DNA. The savior warriors are part of the elite military from planet SR44, commissioned to remove the Colonists from Earth, but as the Colonists continued to breed, so too did their offspring and the number of inhabitants on earth with Colonist DNA is unknown. The Six Saviors have been unsuccessful in their attempts to locate all of the original Colonists and anyone with Colonist DNA.

HUDSON and BEVERLY: Hudson arrived on Earth over two hundred years earlier, and his days as a single, male have caught up with our hero when an indiscretion from his past resurfaces not once but twice. Hudson’s mate Beverly struggles with her husband’s surprising news, and takes some time alone to focus on their future.

BLAKE and SOPHIA: Blake is a descendent of the Colonists; a member of the Savior warriors, and a man determined never to make good on his DNA heritage- a heritage rife with anger, murderous rage, and the need to destroy everything good. But Blake’s mate has news that throws our hero into a tailspin where his rage filled and painful words not only hurt the woman that he loves but forces Sophia to walk away. Like Beverly, Sophia walks away from the man that she loves hoping he will come to understand the source of his anger, and refocus his pain in another direction.

NOAH and ABBY: Noah and Abby are new parents, and like many young infants the baby rarely sleeps which has begun to affect Noah and Abby’s personal relationship. An offer from one of the couple’s has Noah and Abby taking time for themselves, getting the much need rest and relaxation sorely missing from most new parent’s lives.

THE SIX SAVIORS CHRISTMAS Novella covers approximately five days in the life of three couples whose relationships have fallen onto hard times. All of the short stories run parallel to, and overlap some of the same events such that the reader does not feel pulled in too many direction. The premises are heartbreaking yet sweet; the romances are fated and reconciled; the characters are familiar as they struggle with life’s surprise and reveals. THE SIX SAVIORS CHRISTMAS novella is a welcome addition, and a quick peak into the lives of the Warrior Saviors.

Description:
On-the-run ex-agent Peri Reed returns bigger and bolder than ever in this second highly-anticipated installment in #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison’s new suspense trilogy, The Peri Reed Chronicles.

Peri Reed’s job eats her mind, but for a special task agent in hiding, forgetting the past can be a blessing.

Betrayed by the man she thought she loved and the agency who turned her into the very thing she fought against, Peri abandoned the wealth and privilege of Opti for anonymity riddled with memory gaps and self-doubt. But when a highly addictive drug promises to end her dependency on those who’d use her as a tool for their own success, she must choose to remain broken and vulnerable, or return to the above-the-law power and prestige she once left: strong but without will—for whoever holds her next fix, will hold her loyalty.

Yet even now as then, a love based on lies of omission might still save her life.

Review:

The Operator by Kim Harrison is the 2nd book in her Peri Reed Chronicles series.  The Operator is a futuristic sci-fi storyline that revolves around our heroine, Peri Reed.  The bases of this series is that Peri is a drafter, someone who can flip back in short periods of time, to change and reverse things.  The lone caveat is she loses her memory of the time she is drafting.  Peri worked for a government agency, loving her life, until she discovered she was being used by the crooked agency, and betrayed by someone she loved.  Since the first book (The Drafter), Peri, who managed to help bring down this government agency, has been living for a year, in a quiet peaceful life owning a high priced coffee shop. But her peace is short lived, as those from her past have found her.   Peri is now on the run from both her former Opti coworkers, and the CIA, who want Peri to help bring down the people behind Opti.

Bill, the man who handled Peri, tries to dangle a new found drug that will allow her to remember everything about her “jumps”, something she has always wanted; but she continues to fight the attraction of drafting, and the desire of doing what she originally loved.  The man who is in charge of the CIA investigation is no better, as he would keep her locked up.  So Peri must remain on the run, despite visits from former friends and lovers, whom she cannot trust.  During one of these attempts, Peri is darted with a drug that will addict her, causing her bouts of agony.  Will Peri give in and go back to Bill and his gang?

Michael is another of the main characters, who is also a “drafter, and who wants to get the drug that will make him more powerful.  He will do anything to get what he wants, and on his agenda is to kill Peri, who he feels still stands in his way.  Jack and Silas are two people who profess to love Peri, with the latter trying to help her.

What follows is an extremely exciting and intense action filled story that will hold you on the edge of your seat most of the way.  There were a number of great characters, besides the ones I mentioned, with many being evil.  I loved Peri, as she was a tough kick-ass heroine, who must face danger at every turn.  Who are really the good guys, and who can she really trust?

The exciting climax to this story settle some issues, but it does leave things open.  This is a trilogy, and I cannot wait to see how things will end for Peri.  The Operator was wonderfully written by Kim Harrison.

Arista’s Legacy (Dragons of Incendium 2.5) by Deborah Cooke-a review

ARISTA’S LEGACY (Dragons of Incendium 2.5) by Deborah Cooke-a review

Arista's Legacy

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 10, 2016

A Warrior Maiden of Cumae and a mercenary for hire, Arista is used to both hunting and being hunted. She accepts an assignment from Queen Arcana of Regalia so that she’ll have a chance to find the secret that can save both Regalia and Incendium from destruction. Arista never expects to be helped by one of Arcana’s own sons, much less that she will fall in love. How can she choose between defending her beloved and completing her quest?

Arista’s Legacy is a short story in the Dragons of Incendium series. It should be read after Wyvern’s Prince and before Wyvern’s Warrior. Arista’s Legacy is available in a digital edition. It’s also included in the mini-book print edition of Wyvern’s Prince.

•••••••••

REVIEW: ARISTA’S LEGACY by Deborah Cooke is instalment 2.5 in the author’s Dragons of Incendium paranormal/ fantasy series focusing on the twelve royal dragon princesses of Incendium. ARISTA’S LEGACY veers down a path of science-fiction in that our heroine is a ‘Sword Sister ‘; a member of the Hive; an active warrior of the collective. Arista is neither dragon nor human, and her story line begins in the previous instalment -Wyvern’s Prince.

SOME BACKGROUND to the series : For fans of Cooke’s previous series about dragons, THE DRAGONS OF INCENDIUM is NOT connected to, or a spinoff from, her best selling Dragonfire series. The current series focuses on female dragon shifters of Incendium searching for their ‘HeartKeeper’-their mate- and the ‘Carrier of the Seed’ but the princes of Regalia are not necessarily the male that calls to the princesses hearts. The world building reveals the political alliances and potential fall-out when two monarchies collide.

ARISTA’S LEGACY is a bit of a departure from the dragon shifters. Arista was Gemma’s (Wyvern’s Prince) guardian and friend, and Arista’s Legacy is a story of what happened before the events of the preceding novel revealing some background information and history not previously explored in the series. The story line is told through accessed memories, knowledge and data retrieved from Arista who had fallen in love and was desperate to retain the thoughts of her conscience mind. ARISTA’S LEGACY is a very quick and revealing read; a short story that acknowledges a secondary character and her contributions to the preceding tale, as well as a glimpse into a possible future.

With his career on the line, he’s ordered to keep his distance from the brainwashed Ash and protect her from afar, but sinister elements threaten her safety. Lieutenant Ramie Ashdyn is no stranger to fighting for her life. Still under the influence of the Coalition’s brainwashing, she cares little for her own safety. She merely wants to protect the Coalition… and reconnect with Rykus.

Rykus knows how important Ash is to keeping all of them alive, but the target on her back is enormous. Will the growing threat to the Coalition take down Ash and Rip’s only shot at love?

Review:

Shades of Honor by Sandy Williams is the 2nd book in her wonderful Anomaly series.  Shades of Honor, picks up a short time after the end of the previous book.  Ash, our fantastic heroine, is once again giving her new team a hard time.  We learned in the first book that Ash can be difficult to get along with, as she is very tough, brash and independent.  She is an Anomaly, a human who is smarter mentally and physically than the normal person, which makes her an elite soldier, who is faster, stronger, with phenomenal endurance then the regular soldiers.

Rykus, our hero, is facing charges concerning the last mission, but all charges are dropped, since he is being assigned another dangerous mission. Both Ash and Rykus love each other, but they try to keep their distance, as the Coalition will not accept their relationship.  Much to his concern, Rykus finds out the mission will include Ash, which will make it much more difficult for him to concentrate.

The minister prime, Tersa, has put the team together to try and make peace with the evil Sariceans, who caused massive destruction in a recent attack.  Rykus and the entire team, including Ash are not happy about this mission, but Tersa will not be denied.

What follows is an exciting & fun adventure that will bring Ash a bit closer to her new team; solidify Ash & Rykus love for each other, despite his attempts to keep his distance; and an all out battle that will put all their lives in danger.  Who will survive?  Will Ash and Rykus find a way to keep their romance hot and heavy?

Sandy Williams does a fantastic job in continuing the flow of this complex world , and she has created some great characters.  Most of all, I love Ash, and her chemistry with Rykus is off the wall. I look forward to more of this fabulous romance.   This was a fun, exciting, pulse pounding story that had me unable to put the book down, especially as we raced to the tense climax.  Bravo to Sandy Williams, for another wonderful addition to her Anomaly series.  If you like Sci-fi, lots of action, great romance, and twists and turns along the way, than you should be reading this series.

Demons of the Flame Sea by Jean Johnson – a Review

Demons of the Flame Sea by Jean Johnson – a Review

Demons of the Flame SeaAmazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo / BAM

Description:
Raised to understand and control advanced magics, the Fae Rii know they must be careful with the wild, abundant energies of their new desert homeland. They must also downplay the awe they inspire in the Bronze Age humans around them. Still, they have managed to create some equilibrium between the two factions, primitive versus advanced—at least, until new outworlders arrive, tipping the scales out of balance.

Strict and power-hungry, the ruthless Efrijt take the phrase “deal with the devil” to a new level. A treaty may be possible; however, the solution proposed will in turn give birth to a new problem: A chaos that will dance its way through all three races trying to survive in the burning heat of the Flame Sea…

Review:

Demons of the Flame Sea by Jean Johnson is the 2nd book in her Flame Seas Fantasy series.  Demons of the Flame Sea picks up years after the first book ended.  Here is a brief refresher of this series: a group of Fae’s known as Fae Rii, who are Fair Traders, live in peace with a human tribe, making life habitual for them.  Over the years the land now called Flame Sea has advanced into a wonderful community for all, including many fae/human inter species children.

Ban, the Fae Rii leader’s warrior, has been travelling around this world to gather information from various tribes, as well as bring back needed minerals for them.  Near his last stop, he visits a small tribe and learns about another species that is living nearby.  The Efrijt pay the tribe money to pull out mercury, which the Efrijt’s need to help them survive, but the mercury makes the humans sick.

Ban will bring this information home to Jintaya (the leader), and they will ask for help from the Fae council to send them more people.  We get to meet some more characters in this story, some who will be instrumental to negotiate a deal with the Efrijts, who the humans now call Demons.

What follows is an interesting storyline giving us a look at three different species (Fae, Humans & Efrijts).  Jean Johnson has written a very nice story that continues the flow of this world building, and has created some great characters.

This is fantasy and world building that is very well done.  However, if you are looking for an exciting, action filled story, you will not find it in this book.  It a slow build, but enjoyable story of meeting all the characters; learning how they survive together; and how they will handle a new species that could be dangerous.  The negotiations between the Fae and Efrijt has just begun, with the Fae looking out for themselves and the local humans who are suffering; the Efrijt, are willing to agree to terms, as long as they get what they want and to stay in this world.   I expect Jean Johnson will be pulling some surprises as we head toward the final book in this trilogy. I look forward to seeing how this ends.

Flying Through Fire

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date November 7, 2016

Winged monsters have been seen in the skies, and a pestilence follows in their wake, threatening the very survival of mankind. Only the crew of the Blood Hunter knows where they come from, and only one man has the power to send them back—Thorne, a human/dragon hybrid in possession of mental powers beyond comprehension.

Candace Decker doesn’t need anyone to look after her—she’s a badass werewolf more than capable of protecting herself and those she loves. All the same, she’s always been drawn to Thorne’s strength. In an uncertain world, he’s the one man who makes her feel safe. And what Candy wants, she usually gets.

But while Candy is tenacious, Thorne’s willpower has been honed over ten thousand years. He might want her, but the last thing he needs is an infatuation with a young, impetuous werewolf. Candy makes him lose control, and that could have disastrous consequences.

As the threat escalates and they become separated by time and space, Candy must find a way back to him, because while Thorne alone has the power to defeat the dragons, only together can they finally bring peace to the universe.

•••••••

REVIEW: FLYING THROUGH FIRE is the sixth installment in Nina Croft’s adult DARK DESIRES multi-genre paranormal, fantasy, sci-fi romance series focusing on the crew of the space ship Blood Hunter. This is werewolf shifter Candace Decker, and human/dragon hybrid Thorne’s story line. FLYING THROUGH FIRE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty although I recommend reading the series in order for backstory and cohesion. FLYING THROUGH FIRE advances the series several years. Candace is the daughter of Jonathon and Alexia (Deadly Pursuit #2).

Some background: 1000 years after Earth’s demise, the ruling Collective, and the self-proclaimed Church of Everlasting Life played a major role in the control of space. The Collective controlled the rights to the rare radioactive element known as Meridian-that will bestow immortality on those who can afford the price but with its discovery also comes death and destruction. The Church had been in the business of exterminating the genetically modified beings-considering them abominations and a sin against God- but an illness linked to the radioactive element has all but wiped out the population on a number of the planets including many members of the CoEL.

Told from several third person points of view FLYING THROUGH FIRE follows Candace Decker as she hunts for the man responsible for destroying her parent’s life. Never far behind, the winged human/dragon hybrid, and Candace’s protector Thorne, follows hoping to bring Candace under his control. But an attack of a different kind finds the intrepid crew of the Blood Hunter protecting one of their own when the original dragons known as the ‘old ones’ want something the crew is not willing to give up. What ensues is the building relationship between Thorne and Candace, and the fight to save thousands of lives.

The relationship between Thorne and Candace is a protector to friends to lovers relationship that began when Thorne was tasked with protecting a much younger Candace from the world around her. When her parents were taken into custody and her mother forced to return to the Church of Everlasting Life, Candace and her twin brother Angel set out on their own. Years later Thorne would bring Candace and Angel under his wing, and find himself falling for the werewolf shifter that called to his heart. The $ex scenes are intimate without the over the top graphic, erotic element.

Thorne is the eldest of his kind, and with it comes great power-power of which he is often unaware. Candace is an independent, young woman who has fallen in love with the hybrid dragon-a dragon she believes would never fall in love with her.

All of the previous story line couples play secondary and supporting roles including Devlin and Saffira (Temporal Shift 4) as Saffira becomes the target of the marauding dragons. Planets are destroyed; lives are wiped out of existence as the dragons search for Saffira and the crew of the Blood Hunter.

The world building continues to pull the reader through wormholes, black holes and onto poisonous planets; time travel; supernatural and mystical beings, telepathic communication, and artificial intelligence; cyborgs and the mind of the collective- Star Trek meets Star Wars in an epic battle for space, time and everything in between. We are introduced to new species, and hybrid humans, as well as the existence of werewolves, vampires, and supernatural beings whose DNA has been crossed with various flora and fauna.

For readers who are not fans of the sci-fi genre the DARK DESIRES series does not read like the usual sci-fi story lines but more along the lines of paranormal /fantasy romance.

FLYING THROUGH FIRE is a story of adventure; action, romance, betrayal and trust. The premise is exciting and entertaining; the characters are colorful, memorable, spirited and enchanting; the romance is emotional and passionate. Nina Croft’s DARK DESIRES series is addicting, cleverly written, and impossible to put down.
