Description:
It’s 1915, and sixteen-year-old Lora Jones is finishing up her first year as a charity student at Iverson, a prestigious, gothic boarding school on England’s southern coast. While she’s always felt different from everyone around her, now she finally knows why: She is a drákon, a rare, enchanted being with astonishing magical abilities.

As war hits Britain’s shores, and Lora reels from an unimaginable loss, she finds that her powers come with grave and dangerous responsibilities. At the request of Armand Louis, the darkly mysterious boy whose father owns Iverson, Lora will spend her summer at his lavish estate. To help the war effort—and to keep Lora by his side—Armand turns his home into a military hospital, where Lora will serve as a nurse. For Armand is inescapably drawn to her—bound to her by heart-deep secrets and a supernatural connection that runs thicker than blood.

Yet while Lora tries to sort out her own feelings toward Armand, fate offers an unexpected surprise. Lora discovers there is another drákon, a prisoner of war being held in Germany. And that only she, with her newly honed Gifts, will be able to rescue him.

With Armand, Lora will cross enemy lines on an incredible mission—one that could bond her to Armand forever, or irrevocably tear them apart.  Beautifully written, deeply romantic, and filled with daring adventure and magic, The Deepest Night is a mesmerizing novel of the enduring pull of destiny, and the eternal strength of love

Review:

The Deepest Night is Shana Abe’s 2nd book in her The Sweetest Dark series.  To refresh your memory, we met Lora Jones in the first book, as she learned she was drakon, with ability to change into smoke and become a dragon.  This series takes place in England, during 1915, which is a time of a war.  Normally, I don’t usually like stories set in the past, especially if it’s not a historical romance.  But Abe does a wonderful job making this story a beautiful scenario, even in the time of war.

When we left off in The Sweetest Dark, Lora was grieving the loss of her love, Jesse, who was also her protector and teacher of her magical abilities.  But Jesse is a star, who is a light filled with song; as the stars fill the sky with light and song, and they are the ones who take care of their dragons.

The Deepest Night picks up just about at the end of the school year, where Lora wonders where she will be sent for the summer.  Armand (Mandy), who also loves Lora, is determined to keep her close by, so that he can protect her. Armand is also a drakon, but he has not made the change, as of yet.  This story is about Lora and Armand,  with  multiple pov’s, though mostly Lora’s, and an occasional one from Jesse, who keeps his loving eye on Lora, but only in the stars.

The crux of the story is that it is wartime, and Armand finds out that his brother Aubrey, is still alive, but a prisoner of war.  Lora is determined to use her ability and go to Germany to save Aubrey.  What I thought made this book even better then the first book was watching Lora use her gifts, and I totally adored when she became a dragon, and with Mandy on her back flying high.  It was a lot of fun, and scary when she would lose the change while in the air and poor Mandy dropping to the ground. It also became natural to her to appear nude in front of him when she changes back from dragon to girl; and when Armand does make his first change, he too will be nude.  But at this point of their relationship, it doesn’t have an effect, other then being natural & helping one another.

The other main part of the story is Armand’s love for Lora, and how slowly she begins to feel more for him.  She becomes very protective of Mandy, knowing he is due to go through a very painful first change. In The Deepest Night, Lora truly becomes a strong heroine, and learning to use her gifts makes her more confident and courageous.  I like Armand more in this book, as he shows his love for Lora so well.  We find ourselves rooting for her to open her heart and accept Armand.

The last third of the book, with Lora flying with Armand on her back, as they head to war torn Germany to save Aubrey was very exciting and tense.  In between there was some dangerous tight situations, and possible exposure when she was forced to turn into her dragon form to save them.  I really enjoyed this book, and love the drakon concept and watching Lora become so strong.  I know Shana Abe is writing the third book in this series, and hopefully we will get to see Lora admit her feelings for Armand, and they become the couple they are expected to be.  One can hope.  The Deepest Night continues the wonderful theme of the Drakons, with the younger set.  Abe has given us a beautiful background for this story.

Catching Up With Shana Abe

Catching Up With Shana Abe

shana abe 4-13

The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome back Shana Abe.

Shana’s newest release, The Sweetest Dark was released last week. She is here to discuss her first book in her new series, as well as what else we may have to look forward to in 2013

Let’s talk to Shana.

Hi, Shana.  Thank you for taking the time to visit us at The Reading Cafe, to discuss your new release “The Sweetest Dark”, as well as to talk about what you have planned in 2013.

Shana: Thank you for asking me to visit! I’m honored. 🙂

TRC: You have just released the 1st book in your new YA spinoff from your Drákon Series, The Sweetest Dark Series.  For those who may not have read this series, would you please give us a brief description of the premise of the series? If people have not read your Drákon Series, can they still start this new series?

the sweetest darkShana: Anyone at all can pick up The Sweetest Dark (the first book) and have no problems reading it alone. This new series is connected to the Drákon Series, but only loosely. It’s a whole new time period, and new characters and new setting: everything fresh and new!

The Sweetest Dark begins the story of Lora Jones, an impoverished, orphaned, self-described “slum girl” who’s way smarter and more interesting than anyone else around her. She’s always felt different, kind of an outsider, even in her orphanage; as WWI begins she’s selected as the new charity student to an extremely posh and snooty boarding school on England’s southern coast—where, of course, she sticks out even more.

But she’s resourceful and clever, and knows her way around the system. She’s doing all right, but inexplicably (at least to her) has captured the attention of two very different boys: Jesse, the school’s silent, beautiful groundskeeper; and Armand, the dark and elegant son of a duke who lives nearby.

All three of them, as it happens, are bound by magic (although of the three, only Jesse knew all along). And all three of them are going to have to come to terms with their different powers, while balancing the very tricky relationship issues that result from two boys liking the same girl.

TRC: How did you come up with the idea of this new series, and what made you decide to write a Young Adult series?

Shana: Even before “Downton Abbey” (lol!), I was drawn to the Edwardian era. The Drákon Series was set in the Georgian era, a time of hoop skirts and corsets and powered wigs. I enjoyed that, because I was writing about secret dragons disguised as humans, and forcing them to wear all these restrictive, sophisticated garments and jewels seemed like a delicious paradox.

The Edwardian era (the turn of the century, more or less) was equally elegant and sexy, I think. The clothing was still silks and satins and long gowns, but the style was more lovely and loose, if that makes sense. It was a time of great intellectual and scientific innovation as well. In a sense, it was the end of an age, when horses and carriages were being replaced by automobiles, and candles and gaslights by electricity. I wanted Lora to be a part of that, a girl with one foot in each time, figuring out not only her place in society but also her secret and surprising magical gifts.

Lora always spoke to me as a sixteen-year-old. That’s why the book is technically YA, although I think it’s something that can appeal to adults, as well. We never really stop growing up, do we?

TRC: Do you plan to return to your adult Drákon series?

Shana: Never say never! Fans of the Drákon Series might be interested to know that Rue, from The Smoke Thief, has a voice in this new book. Lots of people wanted to know what happened to her and Kit in the series (at one point in the story arc, they ran away!). I do know what happened to them, I swear, and maybe someday they’ll get another book. 🙂

TRC: You have the second book in this series, The Deepest Night, being released in August.  Can you give us a brief description what to look forward to in this book?

Shana: Oh, the story continues! Once you create a character as fascinating as Lora, it’s hard to let go. She’s a few months older, is slightly more secure with her powers yet is still trying to work out who she really is and who she wants to be. She’s called upon to be a hero, and she isn’t quite certain that’s a role she wants to embrace. But if she doesn’t, someone important to her will suffer and die, and she doesn’t want that, either. Eventually, she agrees to a daring rescue of a prisoner of war far, far across enemy lines. It’s quite an adventure.

TRC: Besides The Sweetest Dark and The Deepest Night, do you have any other projects planned for 2013?

Shana: I’m currently working on the third book in the series. It doesn’t have a title yet, but I’m really happy with it so far!

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Shana: Only that I’m so grateful to all of you reading this. I write these stories for me, and I write them for you. But honestly, mostly you. 🙂

Love and thanks to you all!!!

TRC: Thank you, Shana, for giving us an update on The Sweetest Dark, as well as what we can look forward to in the future.  It was a pleasure talking with you again.  We hope to catch up again in the future.

Shana: Thank YOU. You’re awesome!

Description:
The Sweetest Dark is filled with thrilling romance, exciting adventure, and ancient magic. Shana Abé brilliantly captures the drama of post-Victorian England, while unfolding a passionate love story that defies time.

“With every fiber of my being, I yearned to be normal. To glide through my days at Iverson without incident. But I’d have to face the fact that my life was about to unfold in a very, very different way than I’d ever envisioned. Normal would become forever out of reach.”

Lora Jones has always known that she’s different. On the outside, she appears to be an ordinary sixteen-year-old girl. Yet Lora’s been keeping a heartful of secrets: She hears songs that no one else can hear, dreams vividly of smoke and flight, and lives with a mysterious voice inside her that insists she’s far more than what she seems.

England, 1915. Raised in an orphanage in a rough corner of London, Lora quickly learns to hide her unique abilities and avoid attention. Then, much to her surprise, she is selected as the new charity student at Iverson, an elite boarding school on England’s southern coast. Iverson’s eerie, gothic castle is like nothing Lora has ever seen. And the two boys she meets there will open her eyes and forever change her destiny.

Jesse is the school’s groundskeeper—a beautiful boy who recognizes Lora for who and what she truly is. Armand is a darkly handsome and arrogant aristocrat who harbors a few closely guarded secrets of his own. Both hold the answers to her past. One is the key to her future. And both will aim to win her heart. As danger descends upon Iverson, Lora must harness the powers she’s only just begun to understand, or else lose everything she dearly loves.

Filled with lush atmosphere, thrilling romance, and ancient magic, The Sweetest Dark brilliantly captures a rich historical era while unfolding an enchanting love story that defies time.

Review:
The Sweetest Dark by Shana Abe is a new YA series, which is somewhat of a spinoff from her very successful Drakon adult series.  The story takes place in England during World War I.

The heroine and main character in this book is Eleanore Jones ( Lora), whom we meet from the start, as an orphaned young girl. She has no memory of her early childhood, other then the orphanage. She has had a hard life, always hearing music in her head, which made her life even harder, with people thinking she was mentally impaired. Over time the voices/music go away, and she is then chosen as a charity student to an exclusive for the rich, school in London.  As soon as she arrives at the school, the voices start coming back, and the music, which comes when looking at precious metals/gemstones. Lora does not know what is happening, and is convinced she is going insane.

Just as she arrives at Iverson, Lora meets Jesse, the coach driver, and feels an immediate connection to him.  She also meets Armand, who is the son of the Duke, and who pays for the charity student each year.  But things start off rocky between Lora and Armand, and it becomes fun to watch their snarkiness to each other.  Jesse is however, a quiet and gentle soul, and Lora knows she wants to know more about Jesse.

At the school, Lora is treated like the charity case she is.  She is ridiculed by some of the rich girls, but Lora is also hardened by her young life, and stands up to the girls.  She is amazing with her retorts.  Lora, to the surprise of some of the other girls, does develop a friendship with Sophia, one of the rich girls.

She sneaks out often during the evenings to meet Jesse, and it is then she learns he is more then what he seems.  Jesse begins to tell her of her own life, and how important and valuable she is.  He explains some of the voices, and music she hears, and the letters she reads that she has from her unknown past.  She learns of her mother, a Drakon, and what that means.  Armand, as noted before, acts the part well as an arrogant aristocrat, but something pulls him to Lora.  He too will learn more from Jesse.  An unusual friendship bond will develop between the three of them.

Shana Abe has created three wonderful and interesting characters.  At first, I thought it was somewhat slow learning about Lora, but not to far into the book, she becomes a wonderful and strong heroine.   The last half of the book was excellent, watching Lora come on to her own, learning all that she needs to know, her love of Jesse, and the friendship she begins to have with Armand.  It all ties together, and at the end, we are totally hooked to find out what will happen in the next book.

Interview & Giveaway with Shana Abe

Interview & Giveaway with Shana Abe

The Reading Cafe is happy to welcome the wonderful Shana Abe as our guest today. Shana has her long awaited release of The Sweetest Dark upcoming in early 2013, and she is here today to answer our questions, as well as tell us about her books.

Let’s begin our interview with Shana.

TRC: Please tell us about yourself?

Shana:I’m a rowdy rebel girl trapped in a grown-up’s body, with constantly changing,
multi-colored hair (right now it’s brown, white, and blue) and a great, great appreciation
for how wonderful my life really is. Plus, I have a really cute boyfriend. 🙂

TRC: You are an animal lover…you have a dog and five rabbits. Interesting combination..how do they get along?

Shana: They get along very well, because the dog is sweet and smart and knows to stay away from the bunnies. The bunnies, however, are wildly ferocious and always plotting ways to overtake the world...or at least my house. 😉

Rabbits are insanely territorial. You can’t mix them, so they live in separate areas, every one of them a mini despot. That’s the way they like it.
(They’re all rescues, most with horrific and/or tragic back stories, so it’s

nice to let them rule their own realms now. I’ve been rescuing rabbits for

over twenty years. It’s always an adventure.)

TRC: When and how did you become interested in writing?  Have you always liked to write?

Shana: Like many authors, I’ve been writing since I was able to piece together
the alphabet, mostly short stories and poems and once—quite ambitiously for a seven-year-old!—a play. But it wasn’t until I was a teenager that
I thought I might like to write novels. I wrote my first one at seventeen.

It was very, very bad. So I stopped for a while, did some other things for a few years, then realized that I really wanted to write.Because I hated my office job, LOL. I’ve been so lucky. If I’d known more about the industry before I submittedmy first book to my first agent, I might have been too intimidated to even try.

Thank God for ignorance!

TRC: Would you please tell us your process in writing your books?

Shana: I make it up as I go. I’m not trying to be flip: I really do. Some writers create these amazingly detailed outlines, but I can’t. I get bored with outlines, and I don’t like being confined by rules or even ideas. I typically have a vague notion of how I want the story to go, but that’s about it. I never know what’s going to happen next when I write. It’s one of the aspects I love most about the process. That, and falling in love with my characters, even the villains.

You gotta love them all.

TRC:  When you published Smoke Thief to start your Drákon series, did you know how far you wanted to go in this series?

Shana: I had no clue! (See my answer above about making things up as I go,LOL!)
THE SMOKE THIEF came to me as a stand-alone story.By the end of it, I had an inkling for the plot of its first sequel,THE DREAM THIEF—mostly because of Zane. Even as a child hewas just so compelling, I knew he needed his own story. And then it just kept going. I was as surprised as anyone else.

TRC: A number of our readers, who also follow the Drákon Series have some questions, if you can answer them.

·    Will we ever see again, or know where Christoff, and Rue have disappeared?

Shana: Yes! Rue and Christoff have what I would call an historical role in my new book, THE SWEETEST DARK. They’re not the main characters, but they are mentioned. I don’t mean to be coy about it; I just don’t want to give away too much because it’s part of the plot of this new story. (Also, I’m thinking they still might get an entirely new book of their own,  but I’m not sure about that yet. However, I want to assure everyone, that I do know what happened to them, where they went and why.) In fact, the back cover blurb for THE SWEETEST DARK is an excerpt from a letter in Rue’s voice.

·     In the last installment The Time Weaver, Amalia had visions of her own brother (Kimber) murdering members of a rival Drákon tribe. Are we to believe that Kimber is power hungry like the other council members, or will he be more like his peaceful father?

Shana: Kimber’s not power hungry, per se. But he’s definitely ruthless whenhe needs to be. He perceives the rival tribe as a direct threat to his own,and most specifically one member of that tribe (who does end up beingpretty evil, as you’ll recall). So it’s more a matter of he’s going to do what he must to ensure the survival of his own family and his species. He doesn’t want to kill. But he will if he feels he must. It’s part of both the honor and the burden of being the Alpha: he must be strong enough to protect the tribe,  and he must make the unsavory choices no one else will make.

·  Will we ever see this family reunite, and live out their lives without fear of capture, imprisonment, possible death etc…by the council members whom rule the Drákon. Will Amalia be forced to continue living a life of exile, or will she someday be allowed to live in peace with her human husband Zane?

Shana: Wow. Um….

Anything is possible. I can absolutely envision a time and place where the entire family would reunite. The truth is, I sort of like Amalia and Zane in exile, because they get to live in such cool places, LOL. If and when Rue and Kit show back up, they’ll have a huge secret to reveal (again, I’m not trying to be coy; you get a big hint of it in THE SWEETEST DARK).

Those were all awesome questions!

TRC:  Tell us a little about The Sweetest Dark.  Do you consider this a continuation of the Drákon series, or if this will be the start of a new series focusing on Lora?

Shana: It’s both, actually. I’d say it’s the beginning of a new stand-alone series, but also one that dovetails into the Drákon Series in a subtle sort of way. It’s not necessary to have read any of the previous books to understand  the new series. Everything’s fresh, including the characters and the setting.

It’s the story of Eleanore Jones, an impoverished orphan living in 1915 London. She’s always felt different from the rest of the people she’s known; she hears songs no one else hears, dreams vividly of smoke and flight, and lives with what can only be described as a dangerous voice inside of her that insists she’s far more than what she seems.

Lora has no idea she’s one of the last of the drákon. As World War I begins to take its toll and London’s children are evacuated from the city, she’s shocked to discover she’s been selected as the new charity student to the elite Iverson School for Girls on the southern coast.

Iverson was great to write about—an eerie, gothic castle with ghosts and secret tunnels and mean girls and not one but two extraordinary boys nearby who are suddenly, acutely interested in Lora.

Jesse’s the school groundskeeper: beautiful, mute, and aware at once of who and what Lora is.

Armand is the elegant aristocrat who can’t figure out why he’s drawn to thisstrange new girl, but can’t deny that he is, deeply so.

But there’s still a war going on, and peril is never that far way. Lora’s going to discover she needs to embrace her powers at last, or risk losing everything (and everyone) she loves.

TRC:  Do you have any thoughts of a new series in a different genre?

Shana: I do! It’s bubbling at the back of my mind. I can’t indulge in it just yet, though. I’ve got to finish Eleanore’s series.

TRC:  Who is your favorite Female Character in your books?

Shana: Oh, lord. I have no idea. They’re all amazing to me. Rue for herdesperation and originality; Lia for her cleverness and kind heart. Avalon, from THE TRUELOVE BRIDE, who was my first brilliant, deeply magical heroine.  Eleanore too, because she’s pretty much me when I was sixteen, both awkward and confident, someone who is trying hard to figure out not only the hidden mysteries of herself but also the vagaries of the real world.

TRC:  We know you love to read...who are your favorite authors you enjoy reading?

Shana: I know it sounds geeky, but I’ve always loved Shakespeare. (I even majored in drama in collage, I love theatre so much.) Loved the Harry Potter series. Really liked The Hunger Games. But it seems I’m always on deadline; I haven’t read for pleasure in so long, it’s disgraceful. There are so many wonderful authors out there.

TRC:  Who is your muse?

Shana: I don’t know! It’s not a person or a thing. Maybe it’s more a state of being.  Of relaxing, letting go. Allowing the creativity to come without judgment.  That can be incredibly difficult.

TRC:  Would you like to add anything else?

Shana: Just that I’m so happy to be doing this interview, and I mean it. I’m so, so grateful that you all are reading this, and that you care about the stories. I love what I do and hope I get to keep doing it, and that certainly won’t happen without you all. So thank you!

LIGHTNING ROUND

Favorite Food: My mom’s spaghetti and meatballs. But I’m a vegetarian now, so that doesn’t happen much anymore.

Favorite Book (not your own): WATERSHIP DOWN. (Not because it’s about rabbits! Anyway, it’s not really about rabbits,  but rather the human condition.)

Favorite character (male & female) not written by you: I love pretty much all of Barbara O’Neal’s heroines, and all of Laura Kinsale’s heroes.

Favorite Movie: Serenity

Favorite TV Show: Hmm. I don’t really have just one: The Mentalist (Simon Baker!), Hawaii Five-0 (hot guys! great scenery! bad acting!), 30 Rock (Tina Fey!); not necessarily in that order.

Last Movie that you saw: Toy Story 3 on cable. I don’t get out much!

TRC: Thank you, Shana for answering our questions. We look forward to continuing to read your books, and for you to come back to visit us when the Sweetest Dark is released in early 2013.

Shana: Thank you so much! I had a wonderful time answering your questions! 🙂

Biography

Shana Abé was born in Texas. She spent much of her childhood living in Colorado, with a brief stint in Mexico as a foreign exchange student, and, at age seventeen, lived in Japan as a model. Throughout her childhood, Abé wrote, completing what she calls "The Silliest Romance Novel Ever" during her free time during modeling shoots. Her writing focused on romance, as those were the types of books that she most enjoyed reading.

She later attended college in Los Angeles, graduating with a degree in drama.  Her second novel, also a contemporary romance, took third place in a writing contest. She sent the book to several prospective agents, many of which responded with questions similar to "Nice voice — but what line are you writing for?" Unwilling to try to fit her writing into some of the rules that governed contemporary romances, Abé chose to concentrate on historical romances. For her first attempt at a historical romance, the newlywed Abé chose to tell the story of her own romance with her husband, set in medieval times. The manuscript was purchased by Bantam Books and published as A Rose in Winter.

Many of Abé’s subsequent novels have also been set in the medieval time period. Abé chose the time period because of its “great sense of dichotomy….It inspires thoughts of grandeur, of courtly grace and chivalrous knights — but at the same time there’s a gritty, raw aspect to the period that just cannot be denied.”

Abé has received the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award, and has been nominated six times for Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Awards, winning twice.

The Time Weaver by Shana Abe – a Review

The Time Weaver by Shana Abe – a Review

Once again, Shana Abe delights her readers with the latest installment to the mesmerizing Drakon series; The Time Weaver. The pulse pounding addition to a wholly original, fascinating story arc unlike any other in literature. Abe is one of only two authors that I have been lucky enough to discover, that writes in such a phonetic, lyrical quality. The ebb and flow to her words transports readers fully into the glittering, hypnotic, and savagely beautiful world of the Drakon.

Time Weaver is the harrowing story of Prince Sandu of Zaharen Yce, and Honor Carlisle of Darkfrith. Two spectacularly gifted beings–even amongst their own kind. A journey that began in the fourth book Treasure Keeper…with a young girl who disappears under mysterious circumstance, without a single trace, and of whom is never to be seen again….or so we thought. What actually occurred was unforeseen. Those truly responsible is shockingly unexpected, and the girl herself is beyond anything contrived of in dreams…or conjured up by nightmares.

This is the culmination of two people from rivaling tribes falling in love. The lengths of which those thirsting for power would travel–while locked within a primal, brutal struggle for dominance. Is destiny truly set in stone, or is it something that can be chosen? Is the future previously determined, or what one can make of it? The answers will be found by a young Drakon female who can weave time into anything she wishes…only to discover that the consequences of such altering, are more dire than could ever be fathomed. Honor will realize that even time has a limit…and that it is running out for she, and for all those she loves.

The only force powerful enough to stop the impending cataclysm, rests with three people unaffected by such an entity as time. Amalia Langford–daughter to the Alpha Drakon’s of Darkfrith. A woman who see’s the future, and who has risked everything to save Honor’s life. A “ghost” by the name of Rez, who is connected to Honor in a way readers will never see coming. And Zane–Amalia’s mortal husband. Honed in the unforgiving streets of London, and as lethal as any of the Drakon race who despise him. A man who would do anything to protect the only light to be found within his dark existence. Even if safeguarding that light…means it will never again choose to shine upon him.

The Time Weaver showcases more suspense, intrigue, and plot twists than any other previous novel. The intricacies, and subtle nuances of this complex, multi-layered story, make it my most favorite since the glorious first two installments, which began this series. I do not know how much higher Shana Abe could possibly take us, but I anxiously look forward to finding out with her next release; The Sweetest Dark.
