Catching Up with Shannon K Butcher

Catching Up with Shannon Butcher

The Reading Cafe is thrilled to welcome back the wonderful Shannon K. Butcher.  When we last talked to Shannon, she had just released Dying Wish, from her fantastic Sentinel series.

Today Shannon will be discussing her upcoming new release, The Edge of Sanity (our review is tomorrow) from her equally fabulous Edge series.

Let’s talk to Shannon.

Hi Shannon.  Thank you for taking the time to visit us again at The Reading Cafe, and to give us an update as to what you have upcoming, as well as what to expect in 2013.

Shannon: Thanks so much for having me over for a chat! 🙂

TRC: Edge of Sanity is scheduled to be released on December 4th. This is your third book in your Edge series.  Please tell us the premise of this series, for those who may not have read it.

Shannon: The series revolves around a group of mercenaries working at a private security firm run by a woman. They do a wide variety of jobs, and in the course of those jobs, some of the contractors begin to run across odd things. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read the books, but I will say that as the series progresses, the source of those odd things becomes clear, and their efforts shift from simple business and profit to something much more personal.

TRC: Can you give a brief description of Edge of Sanity?

Shannon: EDGE OF SANITY is one of those books that has been in my head for a long time, dying to come out. It revolves around Clay Marshall, one of the employees of the Edge. His health has been getting progressively worse over the last few months. He’s been plagued by headaches, and more recently, blackouts. When he wakes up covered in blood—enough he knows someone has to be dead—he finally reaches his breaking point and asks for help. That help comes in the form of Dr. Leigh Vaughn, who knows all too well what Clay is going through. Together, they set out to uncover the source of his blackouts and find a way to stop them. But the closer they get to the answers, the more obvious it becomes that those answers may cost them their lives.

TRC: Falling Blind is your next book in your Sentinel series, which is expected to be released in April, 2013.  Can you tell us a little about this book? How many books do you plan for the Sentinel series?

Shannon: I’m hoping to do 12-15 books in the Sentinel Wars. I’ve set up the series with a definitive end, but I also designed it so that there’s some wiggle room in the middle to play with a few extra stories if I have the chance.

FALLING BLIND is book seven of the series and revolves around Cain, whose foster daughter has recently grown up and left, leaving him feeling lonely and floundering for a purpose. For centuries, she kept his lifemark healthy, giving him purpose and the willpower to cling to his soul and his humanity. Now that she’s gone, he fears that his days are numbered. Then he meets Rory, a mouthy, pink-haired woman with more guts than common sense. She’s plagued with the ability to see through the eyes of others when she’s close to them, forcing her to live in solitude. She’s only in the city now to hunt for the person who makes her inconvenient gift go away. When Cain finds her, he makes it his job to help her with her task, but in doing so, they draw the attention of a powerful Synestryn demon seeking revenge.

TRC: Forget Me Not was a novella that you released in August.  This was a very sexy paranormal romance.  Are you planning on making this into a series?

Shannon: When I wrote this story, I never planned for it to be anything more than a single novella. I’ve always loved world building, and probably did more of that than absolutely necessary for a story so short. There’s definitely room to play more with this world, but for now, I’m focusing more on some other fun paranormal projects. I could always come back and revisit this world, but I don’t currently have any plans to do so.

TRC: Would you like to share with us what you may have upcoming in 2013, besides Falling Blind?

Shannon: Right now, the only hard release dates I have are for Falling Blind. I’m anticipating that the anthology KICKING IT may come out later in the year as well. I’m working on my short story contribution for that right now, which is buckets of fun. 🙂

In addition to those books, I’m currently working on three other projects, but they’re still too new to talk about. What I can tell you is that they’re all paranormal romance ideas that have been rolling around in my brain for long enough that I had to finally let them out. 🙂

TRC: Would you like to add anything else?

Shannon: I just want to thank you for inviting me to come out and play with you all. I often hermit up and disappear while I’m writing, so it’s really nice to have a chance to come out and be social.

Thank you, Shannon for giving us an update on what we can look forward to in 2013, and we wish you the best with Edge of Sanity & Falling Blind.

Interview with Shannon K. Butcher

Interview with Shannon K. Butcher

As most of you know, The Reading Cafe has featured the amazing Shannon K. Butcher this week. You have been able to read reviews on some of her books, to give you an idea on what you are missing, if you have not read them. We have also given an insight into Shannon with her Biography, as well as a detailed listing of all her novels. Now without further ado…..let us begin the interview.

Hi Shannon, we are thrilled to have you here with us today.  Thank you taking the time to answer our questions.  THE READING CAFÉ  and its’ members are looking forward to our interview with you.

Shannon: Thanks so much for hosting me! I’m glad to be here!

TRC:  We have already posted your biography,  so we will skip the usual question of telling us about yourself.

TRC:  Your husband, Jim Butcher, is a very successful writer.  How has the duality of 2 successful authors in the same household affected the family dynamics?

Shannon: This is one of those mixed blessings. We both work from home, which means there’s always someone working in the house, and we often have deadlines at the same time, which can be stressful. Jim usually writes at night, and I usually do most of my work during the day. Our poor little dog works around the clock, keeping our toes warm no matter the time of day. He’s a real trooper!

On the other hand, since we both do the same job, we really get each other, and understand the pressure, stress, and joy that come from being an author. We also have the luxury of spending a lot of time together, and if we feel like going out on a date in the middle of the day, we can.

TRC: The Sentinel Wars series is very popular in the field of the paranormal genre.  How did you come up with the idea for the series?  With our Theronai Warrior heroes,  Sanquinars,  and the evil Synestryns.

Shannon:  It’s always hard to explain where my ideas come from, but my brain is like a big pot into which I’ve thrown years of tabletop gaming, live action role playing games, bad sci-fi movies, and awesome books. Every once in a while, something cool bubbles to the top of the brain soup. The Sentinels world was like that. After I had the initial idea, it took a couple of years to really iron it out and make it cohesive.

TRC:  Bound by Vengeance was a special novella released as an eSpecial in February.  Was there a reason behind this special, especially with Dying Wish a month away?

Shannon:  The Sentinels world is filled with smaller stories that may never make it into the books. Whenever I have the opportunity to tell a shorter story, I try to use that to squeeze in just a little bit more. The eSpecial novella was one of those awesome chances to give readers another story, so I jumped on it. As far as the timing goes, that’s really not up to me. I just write the books. 🙂

TRC:  How many books do you anticipate for the Sentinel Wars series, as Dying Wish is the 6th book.

Shannon:  I’m currently contracted through book 9. My hope is that I’ll get to write 15, but I could finish the series in 12 if I really had to—there would just be some characters whose stories would never be told. I don’t intend for this series to continue indefinitely—there is a definite end to the story.

TRC:  Dying Wish will be released in March 2012. Jackie and Iain are the hero/heroine depicted in this storyline.  Tell us a bit about Dying Wish, and the newest heroes.

Shannon:  Jackie was held captive by the Synestryn for two years, tortured, starved and used for her blood. Now that she’s free, all she wants is to go back to her old life. She refuses to accept that it’s not possible. Iain must protect her while she figures out that her life has changed. He has no interest in any kind of relationship with her—his soul is dead, and he is no longer capable of being the kind of man she needs. Circumstances tie them together, and Jackie’s learns that when it comes to Iain, things are not what they seem.

TRC:  The Edge series is a romance/suspense genre.  Which genre do you prefer to write and why?

Shannon:  I love writing both! The great thing about writing two sub-genres is that I never get bored. And I get to use skills I learn in writing one type of book on the other. I think doing this has made my paranormals more suspenseful and my suspenses more emotionally intense.

TRC:  How many books do you have planned for the Edge series, and what is next?

Shannon:  I’d like to write another two books in that series, and I hope to get the opportunity to do so.

TRC:  Are you working on anything new?  A new series?  If so, is it romance, paranormal, mystery?

Shannon:  I am working on something new, but it’s a big secret, and I’m not yet ready to share any details.

We look forward to finding out what your secret is.  Thanks again Shannon for being with us today.  We have enjoyed  having you here, and we wish you good luck with Dying Wish.
