REVIEW:SHATTERED PROMISE is the fourth instalment in Penelope black’s contemporary, adult AVALON FALL erotic, romance series. This is single father/mechanic Mason Porter, and non-profit organizer Abby Carter’s story line. SHATTERED PROMISE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary

Told from dual first person perspectives (Mason and Abby) SHATTERED PROMISE follows Abby Carter’s secret return to Avalon Falls. Abby Carter is an event organizer for a non-profit organization in California but our heroine is fast approaching burn out. An accidental assault is the final straw that sends Abby back home to Avalon Falls, where she will come face to face with the man she has always loved, her brothers best friend and single father Mason Porter. No one knows Abby is home, and when Mason becomes desperate and needs help, Abby offers her services as a temporary nanny, a position that places her in a position for heart break, and the direct line of fire.

The world building follows Abby as she struggles with her life going forward. Unsure of her place in the family or even Mason’s life, Abby battles between head and heart knowing Mason may not see her as anything more than his best friend’s young sister. Mason Porter knows that to get involved with Abby could mean the end of a lifelong friendship but Mason has always loved Abby from afar even when he was with someone else.

The relationship between Abby and Mason is a forced proximity, forbidden romance but years earlier, a one-night stand ended with Mason unable to remember what happened, leaving a heart broken Abby in his wake. Fast forward to present day, Abby is struggling with a direct in life, and coming home reminds our heroine of everything she had, and everything she misses. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive but I dislike the use of a certain four-letter word.

The secondary and supporting characters are familiar, energetic and interesting. We are introduced to Abby’s ex fiancé Jake Landry, bartender Beth, as well as the return Abby’s siblings Graham, Beau and Cora, and their parents Hazel and Lucas.

SHATTERED PROMISE is a story of secrets and lies, betrayal and obsession, family and friendships, acceptance and love. The character driven premise is emotional and captivating; the romance is passionate; the characters are determined and charismatic.
