SPOILER ALERT If you haven’t read Born of Silence, there are spoilers contained below.

One of the fiercest soldiers the Phrixians have ever produced, Maris Sulle has been an outsider from the moment he was born different from the rest of his family. He grew up with a secret that cost him everything—his birthright, his family, and his military career. In all his life, he’s only had one love, and he has sacrificed his own happiness to see his best friend reunited with the woman he loves. But now that his good deed is done, he feels lost and adrift. Even though they do their best to include him in their new family, Maris is once again on the outside looking in.

Ture has spent his life hiding from everyone around him—his family, the world, you name it—while trying desperately to fit in. Badly hurt by everyone he’s ever known, he trusts no one except his own best friend. And honestly, he can’t understand why he trusts her. Nor can he believe her when she describes a loyalty between friends the likes of which he’s never seen.

But when Ture is in his darkest hour, he’s saved by a hero he thought only existed in novels. A man who is every bit as scarred and mistrusting as he is—one who has no interest in being dragged into another relationship with anyone.

Having spent his life as a living study of doomed relationships, Maris is well aware of the courtship and fiasco that invariably follows. Still, there is something about Ture he can’t resist. Something that won’t let him walk away when he knows he should.

But when old enemies return to threaten them both, they either have to stand together or die alone.

Review;

All I can say is Sherrilyn Kenyon is forever amazing me with her writing and storytelling ability.  I absolutely loved Cloak and Silence and how she wrote this particular story.  You see, this is the first time I’ve ever read a story where the two main characters are male, and wasn’t sure what to expect from her with this one.  I shouldn’t have worried, because true to her nature, she wrote a beautiful story and had me hooked like a fish on a line after the first chapter.

We previously meet Maris and Ture in Born of Silence, and it was from that point I was intrigued by them. Even though Maris and Ture had limited scenes together in that one, you saw something brewing there and by the end of the book it appeared they were together.  From that point on I wondered if we’d see more of them in their own book, or just as secondary characters in a future book.  I’m really glad Ms. Kenyon decided to listen to her fans and write this one.  She did an amazing job as the story just flowed from beginning to end.  The emotions between not only Maris and Ture, but also between friends, and the love and romance that takes place is very convincing and believable.  It’s no wonder I love this author, you feel and see the love she has for her characters in the way she writes their story.

In Cloak and Silence, Ms. Kenyon does a wonderful job writing both Maris and Ture’s characters.  She wrote this story with dignity and class, and made my heart break for the cruelty shown towards both Maris and Ture for their sexual  orientation. She never once sugar coated anything, but instead gave us the reality of what their lives were like and will continue to be like.  I enjoyed the slow buildup to the romance between Maris and Ture.  Both had reservations because of their backgrounds but truly liked the other and knew they wanted each other.  Their interactions are funny and sweet at times, while other times are very serious and heartfelt.  She created a wonderful balance within their relationship.

Another aspect of the book I liked was seeing the friendships Maris has with past characters and how he brings Ture into that circle of friends.  This group of friends has a bond that is unbreakable and we see it in how they come together to help each other out no matter what. They would lay down their lives for one another no questions asked, and now Ture is part of that family. They may not be family by blood, but they are family none the less.  Ms. Kenyon has a knack for writing these kinds of friendships and relationships in all of her series.  It’s these moments in her stories that either have me howling with laughter, gasping in shock or screaming in outrage over whatever is going on.  In Cloak and Silence it wasn’t any different. There were many times she had me near tears over heartbreaking conversations, or in fits of laughter over the shenanigans taking place.  Never a dull moment in one of Kenyon’s books.

One final aspect I enjoyed in Cloak and Silence was finally learning more about Maris’ species, the Phrixians.  It was interesting to learn that they are amphibious by nature and shift appearances in water.  I loved the scene where Ture first sees Maris in his true form.  Maris expects revulsion and disgust to show in Ture’s gaze, but instead he’s floored to see wonder and acceptance.  The way Maris and Ture accept the other for who and what they are is wonderful to see.  Too many times society judges people by their differences.  It was a breath of fresh air to see how Maris and Ture are accepted by their friends and ‘true family’ no mater there differences. We get to see just how tight these friends are when Darling has a heart to heart with Maris towards the end of the book, when Darling realizes Maris is afraid of what he has with Ture.  The conversation that takes place is touching, real and you feel Darlings words to Maris deep down in your heart.  Ms. Kenyon definitely has a way with words and knows just the correct way to phrase them to evoke the most emotion out of her readers.

Cloak and Silence was brilliantly written. If you enjoy a quick read filled with emotion, laughter and tears and of course danger then this one’s for you.  Kenyon truly out does her self with this one. She takes two characters who believe they are destined to be alone for the rest of their lives, constantly battling against the world, only to find each other and see that maybe they can have it all. With the help of their friends, against all odds, they are able to survive the battles that come at them and make it out the other end.  The emotion, conversations and romance is this book are real and heartfelt and like I said earlier, hook the reader like a fish on a line.  You can’t help but cheer on Maris and Ture and want to jump into the battle yourself and dish out a little beat down to the League Assassins who are gunning for Maris.  The fight scene in the end is well written and kept me on the edge of my seat every step of the way.  I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and was sad when I got to the last page. I wanted Maris and Ture’s story to continue.  My fingers are crossed that I see more of this amazing couple in the next League book Born of Fury which is Hauk’s book.  If the little snippet at the end of Cloak and Silence is any indication about what to expect, all I can say is we will be in for one bumpy and crazy ride with Hauk.

Until next time, happy reading

As an Alterant who fights everything from trolls to demons, Evalle has lived as an outcast among the Beladors, but can now change all that…and find answers to her origins as well. Those answers and a traitor hide within the Medb coven, an enemy poised to destroy the mortal world and all that Evalle holds dear. While her best friends Tzader and Quinn want to help, they have their own conflicts and face unthinkable choices as relationships with the women they love twist in unexpected directions. With time ticking down on a decision that will compel allies to become deadly enemies, Evalle turns to Storm and takes a major step that only complicates matters more when the witchdoctor he’s been hunting now stalks Evalle

Review:

Rise of the Gryphon by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love is the 4th book in their Belador series.  If you have followed my reviews, you will know I love this series.  I love Evalle, who is one of my favorite kickass heroines.

Throughout this series, we have suffered with Evalle, as the Goddess Macha continues to push her to the brink, not to mention Sen, who is always looking to destroy her. Evalle has always been loyal to the Beladors;  constantly putting her life on the line, and yet she is not fully appreciated.  Because she is an Alterant, she is always threatened to lose her freedom with imprisonment.  WILL EVALLE EVER BE TOTALLY FREE??

If you do not know, or remember, an Alterant is half Belador and an unknown half, which allows them to shift into a huge fearful beast. VIPER forbids Evalle to ever shift, and if you read the previous book, you know what happened.  Since this is an early review, I will stay away from spoilers, but still try to give you an idea about this book.

In Rise of the Gryphon, Evalle is ordered by Macha to find Alterants and bring them to her before the Medb gets them, but she only has a few days.  Such love for someone who just saved them.  Grrrrrrrrrrrr

Storm, who I also have grown to love, is with Evalle, as they search for Tristan & the Alterants.  Storm makes himself perfectly clear to Evalle….he loves her.  He will do anything to protect and save Evalle.  Does he??   Only time will tell.

The evil Queen Flaevynn is still the major villain in this series, as she leads the Medb in a plot to destroy the Beladors.  Rivaling “Mommy Dearest”, Flaevynn treats her daughter Kizira worse then an enemy.  So much so, that you find yourself feeling sympathy for Kizira, who has been a thorn against the Beladors. But is Kizira truly bad, since she is being compelled by her mother to hurt the Beladors, or is she really in love with Quinn?

The focus of this story is can Evalle find Tristan and all the Alterants, before the Medb take them?  Evalle and Storm will travel to participate in the Achilles Beast Championship, which is a fight to the death; with the winners (all Alterants), then joining Medb, in an offer they cannot refuse.  It is up to Evalle to find a way to stop Medb, rescue the Alterants, and help save Brina and the Beladors.

Every book in this series is great, but Rise of the Gryphon is the best one so far.  This was such an exciting adventure, filled with tension, bloody fights, various beasts, betrayals, danger, and so many moments you feared for your heroine.  Without giving any spoilers, there was a wonderful part that we have been waiting for…..Awesome. There was also another part of the book that had me very sad, surprisingly so.  When you read this book, you will know what I am talking about.

So many questions were answered:  Why is Evalle so wanted by the Medb?  Does Kizira really care about Quinn?  What kind of powers does Lanna have? Will Storm and Evalle finally come together?  Will we ever stop loving Feenix, our cute lovable gargoyle…….nah forget that, never happen.  I want more Feenix.

But there are more questions still to come that we will have to wait until the next book.

Rise of the Gryphon was non stop action all the way.  The ending, another major battle, was totally awesome; you never knew what was coming next.  There were so many surprises and twists that I sat at the edge of my seat absorbing it all and then letting the shocks wear off. As I said earlier, so many questions were answered. and so many more new ones opened up.

I loved this book so much, that when the last page came, I kept looking for more, thinking there must be missing pages.  Sigh. Now I have to wait a year.  I will end by saying I love Evalle; love the Kenyon/Love duo; love love the Belador series.  Rise of the Gryphon is great. If you have not read this series, once again, what are you waiting for?

Inferno

Description:
Setting: Modern New Orleans

The heat is on, and a new threat to humanity has risen…

Nick has his driver’s license and he’s not afraid to use it. But turning sixteen isn’t what he thought it would be. While other boys his age are worried about prom dates and applying for college, Nick is neck deep in enemies out to stop him from living another day. No longer sure if he can trust anyone, his only ally seems to be the one person he’s been told will ultimately kill him.

But life spent serving the undead is anything except ordinary. And those out to get him have summoned an ancient force so powerful even the gods fear it. As Nick learns to command and control the elements, the one he must master in order to combat his latest foe is the one most likely to destroy him. As the old proverb goes, fire knows nothing of mercy, and if Nick is to survive this latest round, he will have to sacrifice a part of himself. However, the best sacrifice is seldom the sanest move. Sometimes it’s the one that leaves your enemies confused, and you even more so.

And sometimes, you have to trust your enemy to save your friends. But what do you do when that enemy is you?

Review:

Once again Ms. Kenyon has hit the jackpot.  Inferno picks up right where Infamous leaves off and continues to take the reader on a wild adventure.  Just when I think events and storylines will finally come together and start to answer some of my questions, she goes and throws another curve, introduces new characters and completely turns my thoughts upside down.  As much as I want to curse her for that, I can’t because it keeps me coming back for more, time and again.  This series is one that is forever keeping me on my toes wondering where the heck she’s going to go next and how will it affect Dark Hunter Nick, and his future self, Ambrose.  If anything, that is the hardest part of this series for me because I’ve read all her DH books, and know what’s happened there, but in this one, I never know what’s coming next, what choice Nick makes that may alter the future, etc.  How she’s making it all work is beyond me, but who am I to question a genius at storytelling.

Within Inferno we get to see Nick starting to come into his own more, with regards to his Malachai powers.  We start to see the internal battle he will face daily between his humanity and the darkness of the Malachai powers he was born with.  One can’t help but root for Nick to face those dark moments and over come them.  There are moments in the book where we see the lure of the dark powers attempting to over come Nick, but at the last moment something happens to turn him away from those dark calls and remember why it’s so important to stay to on the right path and do the right thing.  Nick has a good kind heart, one his mom is forever making sure stays beating and walking the good path.  Speaking of Nick’s mom, she is one fierce and protective momma and anyone who tries to hurt her Nick had better watch out.  I really like Cherise and believe that her humanity and blood that flow in Nick will play a vital part in which path Nick will eventually take.  Everything that she has instilled in Nick always comes through in the end to help him make the right choice to beat back the darkness within him.  The scenes with Nick and his mom are touching and very heartfelt.  The love they have for each other just flows off the pages.

Cherise isn’t the only one who is forever influencing Nick and his humanity.  We also get to see a lot of Acheron in Inferno and his relationship with Nick.  They are very close friends and seeing this budding relationship and how well they get along with each other really makes me sad because I know what’s coming down the road.  If anyone’s a Kenyon fan like I am, then you know what I mean.  As much as Ash is a big influence and help to Nick in Inferno, so too is Caleb.  We really get to see the friendship between Nick and Caleb grow. No longer is Nick just a responsibility to Caleb due to Adarian and his powers over Caleb.  These two have become friends who would die for each other, and we see this in conversations between the two of them even though they don’t openly admit it.

Along with the friendships, Nick’s growing Malachai powers, and of course trouble knocking on Nick’s door at every turn, Kenyon does throw a few twists and surprising moments into Inferno.  For instance, the most feared and evilest creature in the universe actually having a heart and being capable of love.  Yes people, we see Adarian vulnerable and giving up his life to save the one person he ever treasured, Nick’s mom.  I was shocked when I read this scene(still rubbing my butt from my fall off the couch), since Adarian is rotten to the core, but I’m hoping that this may be a good sign and in Nick’s favour. Another scene that had me reeling was one with Artemis, in the distant future.  As she’s hiding from Ambrose who at this point is full on Malachai, she seems to have a epiphany of sorts and realizes that if she is to survive and possibly save what’s left of humanity and Ambrose from his darkness then she needs to step up to the plate.  Yes folks, it looks as though there may be redemption in the cards for the old heifer goddess down the road.  I’m still on the fence over that idea since I still can’t stand her for everything she put Ash through in his life before he met Tory.  However, any scene she’s in with Nick she seems like she’s changed, and really cares for him.  I just hope this doesn’t mean that she will be his HEA.  I don’t want the two of them together, too much bad blood and history there for my liking.   Having said that, Artemis isn’t the only one with redemption in Inferno.  Kody is redeemed in Nick’s eyes too, and we also learn who and what exactly Kody/Nekoda is.  On top of that we see a scene from one of Nick’s futures and learn that he and Kody are together, so I guess I can only take that for what’s its worth and with a grain of salt since nothing in this series is set in stone. Events both past, present and future are forever changing where poor Nick is concerned.  I wouldn’t wish his situation on my worst enemy.

As for the rest of the book, I loved every moment of it.  I found it a fast read, fast paced, with lots of action and drama.  Of course it wouldn’t be a Kenyon book without her classic Kenyon humour and fantastic one liners/comments.  I really enjoyed the interactions between Nick and Caleb this time around, I’m becoming  a fan of Caleb and would love to see him get his own story down the road.  I also enjoyed the flashes to the future where we get to see different scenarios that could happen for Nick/Ambrose.  If we go by those flashes into the future, are we seeing one of Nick’s HEA’s, or is there someone out there we have yet to meet.  Can Nick handle the full force of the Malachai powers and stay to the good, or will he eventually succumb and become what Ambrose is telling him he can’t let happen?  Will Nick/Ambrose be able to save their mom or will she still suffer the same demise?  These are just some of the questions that have popped into my mind well reading this book.  I have many more, but I don’t want to make your heads spin, cause trust me, mines spinning enough for all of us.  Inferno is a great addition to the Chronicles of Nick series.  It has everything a Kenyon fan could ask for and more.  I can’t wait to read the next installment.  If the epilogue has anything to do with what’s in store for Nick next, then rest assured we are in for one wild and very funny ride in Illusion coming out spring.  Enjoy and happy reading.
