Styxx and Acheron

For all of the DARK HUNTER series fans of SHERRILYN KENYON:

Sherrilyn Kenyon
Styxx launch update. The release date for Styxx has not changed. It’s still set for 9/3/13. But those who attend the launch party at DragonCon (you do *NOT* have to purchase a DragonCon membership/pass to attend the launch party, but Sherri will be attending DC that entire weekend+Monday and will be hanging out with fans and appearing at additional signings, the parade and on various panels throughout the weekend) can get the book early on Aug 29, 2013. So the Styxx launch party is Aug 29, 2013 in the Marriott Marquis on Courtland in Atlanta, GA. The Styxx tour will begin on 9-3-13 with the official on-sale date for the book. We don’t have the cities where Sherri and Dianna will be yet during the Styxx tour, but will post those as soon as we have them.

2013 is the year of Styxx (and that is the title of the book) and those who loved Acheron, won’t want to miss this book as Acheron is a HUGE part of it from beginning to end. You will see a lot of scenes with Ash and Styxx, along with the Atlantean and Greek gods, that have never appeared in previous books and this includes a lot about Ash’s and Styxx’s childhood, both together and separate. And like Acheron, the book is huge in size. And it answers a lot of questions about the series and some of the more complicated relationships. Like Ash, Styxx is a very complicated character and we will be having snippets and other fun tidbits in the months leading up to the release of the book. Sherri will be making appearances online to answer questions about the twins soon, too.

So to reiterate the release of Styxx is Tuesday, 9-3-13, but the release/launch party with prizes, costume contest, characters, etc. is Thursday, 8-29-13 in Atlanta at the Marriott Marquis.

The Curse by Sherrilyn Kenyon & Dianna Love – a Review

The Curse by Sherrilyn Kenyon & Dianna Love – a Review

Description:

Overwhelming odds mean nothing when everything you love is on the line.

With the freedom of an entire race hanging in the balance, Evalle has two days to make good on a promise that she suddenly has no hope of fulfilling when demonic Svart Trolls invade Atlanta. She takes a leap of faith, seeking help from the one man who recently put Evalle in his cross hairs–Black Ops specialist Isak Nyght. While trying to stop the bloody troll-led gang wars, Evalle unwittingly exposes a secret that endangers all she holds dear, and complicates her already tumultuous love life with the mysterious Skinwalker, Storm. But when Evalle discovers she’s the number one target in the Medb coven’s ruthless plan to destroy all Beladors, the deadly Alterant is forced to make a game-changing decision with no time left on the clock.

Review:

The Curse is the third book in Sherrilyn Kenyon & Dianna Love’s Belador series, which is Urban Fantasy.

For those who may not have read this series, here is a little background:
The Belador series is set in a futuristic alternate Atlanta. The world building in this series is awesome with warriors, gods, goddesses, tribunals, and magic, as well as powerful villains.  The Belador’s have various magical powers, such as teleportation, kinetic powers, mind control, enhanced fighting,  and mental telepathy.  They work in conjunction with VIPER, as protectors of the human race, against other supernatural creatures.  Evalle Kincaid, our heroine throughout this series, is an Alterant, whom are not recognized as an acceptable race. Alterants are part Belador, but it’s the other unkown part that is feared, as they are able to shift into monstrous beasts, which they usually cannot control.  But Evalle, who is a powerful warrior, has been allowed to work with the Belador team; thanks to her friendships with Tzader and Quinn, two powerful Beladors. Of course, they do not know that Evalle has already shifted once, and if they knew, the Tribunal would lock Evalle away forever, as they constantly threaten her with.

The Curse picks up almost immediately after Alterant left off.  Evalle must find Tristan, as the goddess Macha has given her a few days to bring her Tristan and other Alterants. If the Alterants can prove their loyalty to Macha, and prove their ability to control their beast, she will recognize them as a legitimate race, allowing them freedom.  But Evalle has to find Tristan.  Storm, the skinwalker, who had helped save Evalle and expressed his feelings for her, was badly injured at the end of Alterant. Did he survive?  Medb are the evil bad guys in this story, and their Queen is plotting to kill the Belador Queen, Brina and take over Treoir.  What will happen, and will they be able to save Brina?

Since this is an early review, I will try give you a look into this wonderful story, and make this spoiler free, so not to ruin it for you.

From the start, the action in this story was non-stop, as I could not put the book down.  Atlanta is under attack by Svart Trolls, who are almost impossible to kill.  The Beladors and Evalle, are trying desperately to find out who has brought in the Svarts, and why are they even more powerful then most trolls.  Early on, during a battle, Evalle almost loses her life, but she is saved by a jaquar, and manages to kill the Svart. But there are so many more Svarts still to come.

The Curse has so many stories within, showcasing some of the main characters.  In many cases going between characters can tend to be distracting, but not so here.  Each chapter was so well done, and kept the flow of the story moving nicely, adding to the element.

Some major points in this book:

Evalle – her relationship with Storm continues to sizzle; but there is also Isak, who is also hot, and despite his own issues, he cannot let go of his obsession with Evalle. Even though you know the chemistry is there with Isak, I am totally on Team Storm. As my friend would say, he is…Swoonworthy…ummm ok so is Isak.

Brina – who loves Tzader, but must follow Macha’s demand to let him go and have a child from someone else.  Her determination to win this battle, but possibly lose Tzader along the way, is very tense.  This part of the story is emotional for me. I feel so bad for Brina and Tzader, who truly do love one another, and it is painful to watch both of them suffer.  Kudos to Kenyon/Love for pulling those emotions out of you.

Quinn – his fixation with Kziera could kill them all.  But somewhere, somehow, you begin to wonder if there is any possibility of a future for them.  Especially, if Kziera is truly not as evil as she is often displayed. Is she evil or does she truly love Quinn?

Kziera’s mother Queen Flaevynn is truly evil, and she is desperate, knowing her days are dwindling.  Cathbad, Kziera’s  father comes into play more, but the jury is still out if he is as bad as Flaevynn, and he is the one who truly knows about the true secrets of the Alterants.

We are also introduced to some new and interesting characters, whom I’m sure we will see more of in the future.   Such as Lanna, Quinn’s young cousin, who has powers of her own.  Kit, Isak’s very interesting mother, who is the power behind his operation.  There are also so many people we love to hate..Macha, Sen, Queen Flaevynn, and others.

The story, as I have said is very exciting and tense.  Every step of the way, they have to fight off the Svarts, whom we learn early, have been hired by MedB to destroy the Beladors, and they all want Evalle. The big question here is why do they want Evalle alive?

When Evalle does find Tristan, just when she sees a chance to save herself from Macha and imprisonment, another trick and betrayal causes her to lose him again. Will Evalle ever become totally free?

The last third of the book was so exciting, filled with constant action, a major battle to try to save Brina, and some revelations, which will bring more questions to be answered.

Through all that, Evalle, continues to be one of my favorite female warriors in paranormal/urban fantasy.  In The Curse, she becomes more vulnerable, and an even more of an awesome heroine.  I am so vested into this series, that it is beginning to get to me that Evalle, who gives her life and loyalty to Belador/VIPER, and endangers herself often to save humans…yet, she must still be threatened with her freedom.

As I have said before, for those who have not read this series, I suggest you read this in order.  Otherwise, you would lose a major understanding of each character.  But each story does have somewhat of an ending, as you learn more, and yet there is still so much more left open.  I loved The Curse, and love the duo of Kenyon/Love.  This was a great story from start to finish, super fun, lots of action, couples to root for, and a fantastic heroine.

Alterant by Sherrilyn Kenyon & Dianna Love – a Review

Alterant by Sherrilyn Kenyon & Dianna Love – a Review

“Alterant” is the second book in the Belador series by the duo of Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love. This series is of the Urban Fantasy genre. Blood Trinity was the first book in this series, and it was a great start.  If you want to read this series, please start with Blood Trinity, so you get to know the heroine of Belador.

Evalle Kincaid, the heroine in this series, continues to find herself in more trouble, as she faces the gods and goddesses of the Tribunal, once again for her freedom.  The Tribunal want to lock up all Alterants, as they feel they are a dangerous and unknown species.  Evalle, is a member of VIPER, who fight and use their supernatural skills to stop evil forces against humans.  Evalle, continually hopes to prove that not all Alterants are dangerous, and they will not shift to their beast form to harm others.  Though she has put her life on the line numerous times, she is still distrusted by the gods and goddesses of the Tribunal. Evalle has two Belador warrior friends she totally trusts, and they (Quinn & Tzader) have always been able to help her remain free.

During the Tribunal, she is blamed for the escape of three Alterants. But with the help of Brina, the Belador leader, she is given limited time to bring them back into custody.  The gods and goddesses allow her to use three magical gifts to help her in this task.  However, in the last book, she had helped put Tristan, another Alterant, to a caged imprisonment. Now she needs his help to find the 3 escaped Alterants.

The Belador series is focused on Evalle, as the main character, but there are other important characters with their own stories intertwined throughout the book. Storm, a skinwalker, who wants to protect Evalle, and finds himself falling for her.   Of course, Tristan also has an interest, but is mostly looking for his own freedom.  Then there is the relationship between Brina and Tzader, who are very much in love, but are being manipulated to remain apart by the Belador Queen, Macha. Kizira, the Medb priestess, who loves Quinn, is plotting to overthrow the Beladors and kill Brina, using the Alterants to do it. The Medb know the truth about what the Alterants really are, which could free them.

The most adorable character in this series is a pet gargoyle named Feenix, who snacks on lug nuts and talks with a lisp. He is Evalle’s much loved pet, and you totally fall in love with him.  You will forever be saying   “Yeth…Dammit”.

Kenyon & Love have done an excellent job in this world building, and creating such wonderful characters. There are so many fascinating characters….Gods, Goddesses, Witches, Priestess, Queens, and Warriors, not to mention the supernatural.  This was a enjoyable and fun book to read, with a lot of action, not to mention a terrific heroine.  I look forward to the next book in this series….The Curse

Time Untime by Sherrilyn Kenyon – a Review

Time Untime by Sherrilyn Kenyon – a Review

As I sit here attempting to write my review on Sherrilyn Kenyon‘s Time Untime, sorting  through my thoughts and feelings for this book, many words are running through my mind.  Words like, wow, amazing, shocking, action filled, emotional, touching,….yeah okay I think you get the picture, I loved it.  This book is a must read for any Kenyon fan and even if you aren’t a Kenyon fan you’d enjoy this book.  However, if you haven’t read Retribution, do so before reading Time Untime.  To me this is like the sequel as Kenyon laid the groundwork in Retribution, finishing it off with this story.  Ren, who we met in Retribution continues on his journey now and his story pics up where Retribution left off.

There was so much that happens in this book, but if anyone who is a mythology junkie like me, then this book won’t disappoint you.  Kenyon brought in the Cherokee and Mayan myths that also happened to tie into the whole end of the world Mayan prophecy come December 2012 this year, but she also tied them up nicely with the Greek and Atlantean mythologies.  If Ren and Katari can’t defeat their enemies to reset the calendar then the seven gates open and all kinds of nasty comes gunning for humanity and the world.  These stories that are told throughout the entire book are very interesting and flow nicely with Ren and Kateri’s journey to not only finding each other, but working together to save the world.

Just when you think Kenyon can’t create another tortured hero without it becoming redundant, she goes and proves us wrong.  Ren Waya (short for Renegade, the name he choose when he was reborn a DH) is the son of a Greek goddess and Mayan Chieftan.  With this heritage one would think he’d be held in high esteem, but it doesn’t.  His mother’s pantheon exiles her (Zeus once again proves he’s a major horses behind) and Ren’s father disowns him leaving him for dead, not once but twice. Thanks to Artemis (it pains me to type her name) she assigns a Demon to nurse Ren till he is returned to his father, to which is father is not happy about. From this point on his life doesn’t improve. He’s ridiculed, made fun of, mocked, beaten, all because his father doesn’t want him and he stutters, as a result of being nursed by a Demon and only known that language at first.  As a result of his hellish life Ren is duped into walking down the darkened path, then finding redemption, only to be betrayed by his own brother Coyote, which causes him to become a Dark Hunter.

Kateri Avani is a scientist/geologist but also a descendant of the First Guardian and last of her bloodline, which is responsible for protecting the stone needed to reset the calendar.  She is also the cousin of Sunshine Runningwolf and sister-in-law to Talon, but is completely oblivious to who and what her relatives really are.  It isn’t until she’s attacked in her lab for her stone that her world is turned upside down.  Kateri is quickly introduced to the world of preternatural beings and what her role in all of it is.  Seeing as she had no clue about any of this she takes it all rather well, and handles what’s thrown at her time and again as they rush to the Valley of Fire to reset the Calendar.  Along the way however, she finds she’s falling for her DH/Mayan Warrior not sure what to make of all the visions regarding him she’s had in her life.

As I said much happened in this book and would take me forever to go through it all.  It was well written and kept you on the edge of your seat, not wanting to put the book down.  It had you laughing at the camaraderie between Ren and the gang (Sundown, Cabezel, Sasha, Ash, Nick, Talon, Rain Runningwolf, and Urian).  Then in the next breath it had you aching for the pain and hardship that Ren went through in his long existence.  We get to watch a warrior who is stripped down to his lowest point only to build himself back up again and learn to trust, believe and even love again.  His journey throughout this story is beautifully written.  One of my favorite scenes and best written scenes in my opinion is Ren’s rebirth to a human.  The way Kenyon wrote that scene, and having Nick a part of it to help Kateri through it brought tears to my eyes and proves that there is hope for Nick yet.

Another favorite part of the story for me was the many appearances of Ash.  He’s been in the background far too long lately and it was nice to see him return to action and help his friends out.  I had to laugh every time someone saw Ash and his new hair.  Those scenes were classic Kenyon humor, which she uses perfectly to balance out her story alongside the whole end of the world scenario with Ren and Kateri battling to save the world and each other.   As well, there is a scene between Ash and Nick that will have you shedding a few tears at what has become of Nick so far and what will become of Nick if he can’t control the darkness inside him.  We get to see the two of them really open up about everything and finally make some headway towards maybe helping each other, instead of being at odds.  It’s a very touching scene, one that answers some questions, but also leaves you with questions for the future.  For anyone who has been upset at Nick lately, your outlook on him will be very different and have you doing a complete 180 turn around where he is concerned.  This is Kenyon at her best.

As I said in the beginning of the review, this story is amazing and another hit for Kenyon and her Dark Hunter series. A must read and I have no problem recommending it to everyone. If I may, I’d like to leave you with a few treats this time. When I was reading this book a new song by Alanis Morissette came on the radio one day and it instantly made me think of Ren and Kateri.  To hear the song and watch the music video, you can go to his link; http://www.alanis.com/

As well, to get you all ready for the next Dark Hunter book Styxx, yes that’s right, Ash’s brother is getting his story told next.  Here’s a link to a snippet from his story that Kenyon posted the other day to her FB page.

STYXX by Sherrilyn Kenyon-News

Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon-news

FROM: Sherrilyn Kenyon

Styxx
About the book
Publication Date:  Aug 6, 2013

Just when you thought doomsday was over…

Centuries ago Acheron protected the human race by imprisoning an ancient evil bent on absolute destruction. Now that evil has been unleashed and it is out for revenge.

As the twin to Acheron, Styxx hasn’t always been on his brother’s side. They’ve spent more centuries going at each other’s throats than protecting their backs. Now Styxx has a chance to prove his loyalty to his brother, but only if he’s willing to trade his life for Acheron’s.

Bethany was born to set right the wrong that left her family imprisoned for eternity. Now that she’s out, nothing will stop her from fulfilling the bargain that freed them. She must take the life of the last remaining Atlantean and she will not fail. But things are never what they seem and Acheron is no longer the last of his line.
Styxx and Acheron must put aside their past and learn to trust each other or more will suffer.

Yet it’s hard to risk your own life for someone who once tried to take yours, even when it’s your own twin, and when loyalties are skewed and no one can be trusted, not even yourself, how do you find a way back from the darkness that wants to consume the entire world? One that wants to start by devouring your very soul?

****************

Q. Will Styxx have his own book

In short, yes. I know, I know. I’ve said a million times that I was too mad at Styxx to write his story. Ever. I know…
Then one day as I sat quietly thinking, Styxx walked in and sat down next to me.

“I have something to tell you.”

I wrinkled my nose at him. “I don’t want to hear it. You’re an @$$. Go away.”

He didn’t listen. Instead, he made me realize that I, like everyone else, including Acheron, had misjudged him. I saw the events of the past not through Acheron’s eyes. I saw them through Styxx’s and what an awakening it was.

As I’ve always said, there are three sides to every story. Yours. Theirs. And the truth that isn’t clouded by human emotions that filter everything. I’d had two sides of the story all along. Acheron’s and the unemotional truth. What I never had before was Styxx’s point of view. I let my own emotions cloud him to me, and like others, I saw him only as Acheron did. But things aren’t always what they seem and people only remember the part of the past they experience and/or have been told. And they seldom know everything. Most of all, we can’t look into the heart of someone else. At least not until now. Styxx is so much more than I ever knew him to be.

As with Zarek and Valerius, I think all of you will agree with me when you read the book. And in many ways, it’s another story of Acheron. You will see events that weren’t in his book and I know Styxx will win you over. In all honesty, he was done wrong and it will break your heart. Misjudged, condemned, betrayed and abandoned… There’s a whole side of him that no one knows. Even now, it brings tears to my eyes.

Reported by Marcie

NOTE: Just so everyone knows, Acheron was heartbreaking-counselling was needed, stocks in tissues soared. Styxx will bring tears to our eyes….*sniff*….not sure if I can handle another brother so brutally abused.
