REVIEW: BLADE is the latest addition to the multi-authored 1001 Dark Nights anthology, and the twenty third installment in Alexandra Ivy and Laura Wright’s dual authored, contemporary, adult BAYOU HEAT paranormal, romance novella series focusing on the Pantera shifters of the Wildlands of Louisiana. This is Suit pantera Blade, and human waitress Valli’s story line. BLADE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but I recommend reading the series in order as there is an ongoing premise throughout.

SOME BACKGROUND: The pantera are a secretive group of puma shifters living in the magical Wildlands of Louisiana. Their existence is threatened by a group known to capture, imprison, and cruelly experiment upon the shifters in the hopes of creating a super soldier blending pantera and human DNA. The labs at Bensen Enterprises have been destroyed but the scientists and people in charge continue to inflict pain and suffering upon those whose lives they have tried to destroy.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Valli and Blade) BLADE follows pantera shifter Blade as he searches for the human female impregnated with his seed. Blade only knows that the female is on the run, somewhere near the Louisiana Bayou, and our hero is desperate to find the woman who may be carrying one of the few successfully bred cubs. Once found, Valli accuses Blade of hideous crimes, crimes that Blade knows nothing about. What ensues is the struggle to reveal the truth, and the building relationship between Valli and Blade that will be threatened when someone comes looking for our story line heroine.

BLADE is a quick read; a fast paced story of insta-lust and love between a pantera and the human who carries the hopes of their species. The premise is energetic but predictable; the characters are passionate and emotional; the romance is fated and intense-another pantera shifter will find his mate in the Wildlands of Louisiana.

excerpt

Walking out of the kitchen with careful steps, Valli wondered if Fran suspected she wasn’t feeling well. Again. If so, the older woman would insist that she go upstairs to bed. It was such a temptation, but it would not only leave Fran alone to deal with both cooking and waiting tables—it would be a reminder of the last time she’d been unwell. And she couldn’t risk losing her job, even if Fran let her stay upstairs while she hired out again. She had to push through.
Once out of the kitchen, she scurried down the short hallway that led to the women’s bathroom. Crossing to the sink, she splashed cold water on her face, taking deep breaths.
After a moment or two the dizziness receded but was replaced by a strange sense of euphoria. As if something, or someone, was filling her with pure joy.
Unnerved by the sensation, Valli rushed out of the bathroom, only to slam into a man who was just entering the hallway.
Dr. Scott Richards reached out to grasp her by the shoulders, preventing her from bouncing away like a pinball.
“Valli, are you okay?” he asked in concern.
She instantly pulled away from his touch. It wasn’t personal. The doctor was young and boy-next-door handsome, with his dark blond hair and bright blue eyes. He even had dimples. But since her return from the clinic she didn’t want anyone touching her. Especially not men.
She forced a smile to her lips. “Sorry, Dr. Richards.”
He clicked his tongue. “How many times do I need to tell you to call me Scott? Dr. Richards was my dad.”
She took another step backward. Since her arrival in Bonne, she sensed that Scott wanted more from her than just a doctor/patient relationship.
“Scott,” she reluctantly offered.
“That’s better.” He flashed his dimples. “Now why don’t you join me for a cup of coffee? You look like you could use some caffeine.”
“I’m fine.”
He frowned. “You’re pale.”
“I’m working a double shift, so it’s been a long day.”
“Hmm.” His gaze studied the shadows she knew marred the skin beneath her eyes before lowering to her loose smock. Did he suspect there was something she was trying to hide? Or was he just surprised in her choice of uniform? “I think you need to come in for a checkup.”
A flush of anxiety moved through Valli at his words. She pressed herself against the wall and began to inch her way toward the back door that served as an emergency exit.
She liked this man. She really did. But there was no way in hell she was allowing him to examine her. No way in hell she was letting him even get close enough to try.
“I told you when I returned to town that I was cured.”

Wolf Slayer
Arctic Brotherhood series – Book #4
by Jane Godman
Release Date: July 11, 2017

Wolf SlayerAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM

Description:
Kyle Madden is the cop in charge of the elite task force hunting a murderer known as the Cage Killer. He is also a werewolf and a member of the Arctic Brotherhood. When his team find one of the Cage Killer’s victims alive, Madden faces some tough choices. It emerges that the crazed killer is targeting werewolves. Will Madden be able to uphold his vow to keep the human and werewolf parts of his life separate?

Maria Delgardo knows she is lucky to be alive after escaping the clutches of a serial killer. Even so, her injuries are horrific and the murderer has made it clear he intends to finish the job. She only feels safe with Madden, the handsome cop who rescued her from captivity. Maria’s whole world is turned upside down when he tells her the reason why she was chosen by the Cage Killer.

Review:

Wolf Slayer by Jane Godman is the 4th book in her Arctic Brotherhood series. .  A refresher:  Arctic Brotherhood is a shifter series, with a new ancient species of Arctic werewolves, who are part of the 7 members of the Brotherhood of the Midnight Sun.

Kyle Madden, one of our Arctic Brotherhood werewolves, is a detective, who hides what he is to his coworkers. Kyle is currently deep into trying to catch a serial killer (Cage Killer), who kidnaps, tortures and kills his victims.   Kyle and his police team are desperate to find the latest victim.  They receive a tip and using his unique senses, Kyle discovers that  underneath the house they are investigating holds a cave.  Kyle will then find the latest victim, Maria Delgardo, who is our heroine.

Maria has been tortured, and thinks she is hallucinating when she sees a handsome stranger coming to her rescue.  Kyle and his team will get Maria out, and to the hospital, where she will be treated for her severe injuries, including loss of some fingers.  This also pushes Kyle to the max, in his desperation to find the Cage Killer.  Kyle learns that Maria, unknown to her, is also an Arctic wolf, but she has never shifted.  She will be moved to protect her to one of the Brotherhood’s compound, where they will all return together to find the Cage Killer.

Slowly, the attraction between Maria and Kyle becomes very hot and sexual, which Godman does use a lot.  The story was very exciting and intense as they get closer to the truth.  Rather than say too much more, Chastel once again is still the terrible villain, and a powerful one; since he can swap bodies and control minds to get those to do his bidding.  He needs to be stopped.  On that note, I personally feel this part needs to be completed, to move on to other possible types of mysteries or villains.  There are a number of characters that still need their story told, but this one seems to be getting old.

That being said, this is an excellent series;   action packed, tension, suspense, mystery, magic  and lots of steamy sex in this wonderful fantasy world. Wolf Slayer brings our favorites back, and the entire Arctic Brotherhood team are great; including the women or men that find their mates.   These are all quick and fun reads, which I suggest you start from the first book.

Dan Lowell is a member of the Brotherhood of the Midnight Sun. Lowell is aghast when he realizes his mystery Siberian lover is Odessa Santin, particularly as he needs to confront her because he believes she has been poisoning the Arctic environment. The physical passion they feel for each other is equaled by their sizzling animosity as they argue over the allegations.

Lowell soon discovers that Odessa is being framed, and someone is trying to reignite hostilities between the two packs. For the first time ever, the Arctics and the Siberians agree to put aside their differences and unite against a common enemy. As they work together, Lowell and Odessa begin to realize that their feelings for each other run deeper than they thought.

Review:

Storm Wolf by Jane Godman is the 3rd book in her Arctic Brotherhood series.  This is a fun fantasy that is a fast and exciting read.  Just a refresher:  Arctic Brotherhood is a shifter series, with a new ancient species of Arctic werewolves, who are part of the 7 members of the Brotherhood of the Midnight Sun.

In Storm Wolf, Odessa Santin is our heroine; she is a Siberian Werewolf, who are enemies of the Arctic wolves. Odessa is the leader of her Siberian werewolf pack, since the death of her father, who was killed by the Arctic wolves.  Odessa runs a successful gaming business, and leaves the running of the pack to one of her leaders.   On the night of conference for her new game, Odessa meets a stranger and much to her dismay, she ends up having sex.

Dan Lowell, our hero, is one of the Arctic Brotherhood, whom we met in previous books.  Dan is a scholar who specializes in werewolf history.  Dan had attended the conference, since he was desperate to talk to Odessa Santin about the poisoning of the environment that her pack is doing.  To Dan’s surprise when he meets Odessa, he realizes she is the woman who he had wild sex the night before. Odessa is also shocked, but maintains her composure, as she is extremely cold to the man who is part of the pack that killed her father.  When Dan shows her a video showing her and her team dumping the poison; she is appalled, claiming she did not do this.  In a short period, Dan and Odessa will join together to find out who is framing both of their packs and what is the magic being used to superimpose their images.

What follows is an exciting adventure that will bring both Dan and Odessa even closer together.  Godman does tend to do a lot of hot sexy scenes, but at least the story still remains in the forefront.   When Odessa finds her pack all but destroyed, she knows there is someone very powerful trying to start a war between the Arctic and Siberian wolves.  The members of the Arctic Brotherhood we have come to love join with them to try to stop this war.   In the previous book, Chastel was killed, but the magic being used proves that he is still alive.

This is an exciting adventure using Norse mythology, with nonstop action, edge of your seat suspense, and a sizzling couple.  There are also, gods, goddesses, shifters, magic in this fantasy world that Godman has given us.  I look forward to the next book

Elemental Mating by Milly Taiden – a Review

Elemental Mating by Milly Taiden – a Review

Elemental MatingAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM

Description:
Their existence was a secret the government stumbled upon. In exchange for continued autonomy, the paranormals entered an alliance with the government. Now they are A.L.F.A.: Alpha League Federal Agency, sworn to protect and serve humanity.

Brilliant scientist Melinda Caster has discovered a new strain of the Zika virus that stimulates synaptic growth in embryos, causing neuron development beyond normal human levels. Way beyond, like ESP-levels of cognitive abilities. When the lab is broken into, Melinda realizes that someone has been keeping tabs on her research and wants it for themselves. A happy accident destroys critical data before it can fall into the wrong hands, but unfortunately that makes Melinda and her perfect memory a target.

A.L.F.A sends in jaguar-shifter Agent Parish Hamel to discover who is after the virus and why. The beautiful scientist acts like catnip to his senses and throws his mating instincts into overdrive. And then she disappears along with the only sample of the virus…. Now Parish must canvas the darkest areas of the supernatural underground to rescue Melinda, and what he discovers is beyond a paranormal’s worst nightmare.

Review:

Elemental Mating by Milly Taiden is the first book in her new A.L.F.A. series.  I had mixed feelings about this book, which I will go into detail later in this review.

Melinda Caster, our heroine, is a scientist who is working in Uganda.  She has discovered a virus and a possible antidote.  Parish Hamel, our hero, arrives on the scene a short time after Melinda discovers how the effect of this serum acts on mice. It turns out Hamel is a government agent for A.L.F.A (Alpha League Federal Agency), and he is a Jaguar shifter.  Hamel has been assigned to protect Melinda, though she does not know this, and is told he is another scientist interested in her findings.

It seems this virus does not kill, but instead increases their ability beyond that of normal humans.  Someone has been tracking Melinda, and looking for the virus; as both her house and workplace were destroyed.  A few times, Melinda finds herself saved by a lone Jaguar, which shocks her, but she begins to look at the Jaguar as her savior.  Of course, it will be much later when she finds out that Hamel is the Jaguar.  Hamel recognizes early on that Melinda is his mate.

This was a very promising story, with some excitement, demons, and a couple that had a lot of sexual chemistry together.  However, despite this, my mixed feelings brought this down at least a star.  I know this was also meant to add humor into the story, but I felt some of it was a bit amateurish.  When they both ended up in the Demon realm, it was totally off the wall for me,  being more on the silly side.

That being said, Elemental Mating had an interesting and exciting theme, and a sexy couple.  I will try out the next book to see if my mixed feelings change.  If you enjoy a shifter story line, with this type of humor, then you should give Elemental Mating a try.

••••••••

REVIEW: THE UNTAMED VAMPIRE is the fourth installment in Kate Baxter’s adult, contemporary LAST TRUE VAMPIRE erotic, paranormal romance series. This is Alpha werewolf of the Forkbeard pack Gunnar Falk, and hybrid vampire Chelle Daly’s story line. THE UNTAMED VAMPIRE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from several third perspectives including numerous plot points and building stories THE UNTAMED VAMPIRE focuses on Chelle Daly’s search for the truth about her existence. Chelle is a powerful vampire; a vampire not turned by a bite or born into the life, but turned by an unknown ancient magic imbuing our heroine with untapped power that is slowly beginning to evolve. Searching for the answers to her inception Chelle finds herself face to face with an ancient Viking warrior-Gunnar Falk-the Alpha leader of the Forkbeard werewolf pack, and the man that calls to heart her. Gunnar is Chelle’s tethered mate-and together the couple finds themselves fighting a centuries old law that forbids the mating of vampires and wolves. What ensues is the building relationship between Chelle and Gunnar, and Gunnar’s need to protect his mate at the risk of his own life.

The world building focuses on the encoaching war between the Sortiari and the Beserkers. The Sortiari are an ancient secret society that infiltrated every aspect of civilization, and the self proclaimed guardians of fate. Two hundred years earlier the Sortiari attempted to eradicate the vampire race and were all but successful in their task. Someone behind the scenes is pushing for war; the Beserkers continue to destroy what is left of the vampire race.

THE UNTAMED VAMPIRE has a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including Gunnar’s second in command Aren: the Beserker warlord Ian Gregor, leader of the Sortiari Trenton McAlister, Chelle’s only vampire progeny Lucas, and her brother Ronan, King of the vampires Mikhail Aristov, Saeed Almasi-a vampire thought to be mad, and an assortment of vampires, dhampirs, mages, werewolves, shifters, fae and beserkers. Chelle finds an ally in Jillian, a recently turned member of Gunnar’s Pack. Saeed and Cerys’s story line is next in THE LOST VAMPIRE (August 2017).

THE UNTAMED VAMPIRE is a detailed story line that follows several building premises, intersecting paths, and the potential destruction of an entire race. There are moments of heartbreak and betrayal; romance and love; action, fight scenes and eventual death. The premise is entertaining, suspenseful and impassioned; the characters are numerous, colorful and dynamic; the romance is intense, sensual and fated. Kate Baxter’s LAST TRUE VAMPIRE is an imaginative series; a sexy, enchanting look at the supernatural creatures we both love and hate.

“Siobhan will see you now.”
One thing was certain, Siobhan’s coven had become more formal since Chelle belonged to it. She followed Carrig, Siobhan’s most trusted confidant and protector, through the ruins of the dilapidated building that served as the coven’s home. Security seemed to be more of a concern than it had been in the past, with dhampirs standing guard at various points throughout the building, most of them armed in one fashion or another. Had the coven’s numbers grown? Chelle certainly couldn’t remember there being so many dhampirs in Siobhan’s fold, even though hers had already been the largest coven in the city.
It was possible another coven had merged with Siobhan’s. Los Angeles was home to thirteen dhampir covens. It served to reason that with the vampire race’s rebirth, there would be those who would side with Siobhan in seeing that rebirth as a threat.
She’s turned . . .
Two sets of fangs. The better to tear out the throats of her prey.
Dangerous.
She doesn’t smell like the other vampires. Not like Ronan at all. What is she?
Chelle turned her head as she caught wind of that last thought and her gaze met that of a dhampir thirty or so feet away who studied her with intense curiosity. The female’s dark brown gaze locked with Chelle’s and her lips curled into a wan smile. That the dhampir recognized the difference in Chelle’s scent piqued her curiosity. She committed the female’s face to memory. One to keep an eye on for sure . . .
Chelle turned forward and kept her gaze focused straight ahead as she did her best to block out the thoughts of the dhampirs who didn’t know any better than to project them right at her. Her skin pricked as their curious gazes followed her, the scent of their fear both repelled her and ignited her thirst. Chelle was a predator and they were her prey. She swallowed against the dry fire in her throat and focused instead on the sound of the thick soles of her boots as they made contact with the cracked industrial flooring.
It wouldn’t do to lose control on her first official outing. Especially when there was so much at stake.
Siobhan looked very much like a queen holding court, perched atop an elaborate chair on a high dais. She waited for Chelle to approach, a pleasant but not altogether friendly expression affixed to her beautiful face. Her emerald-green gaze narrowed as Chelle came to a halt a few feet away. A hiss issued from between Siobhan’s teeth.
“Vampire.”
The one word was spoken with open hostility and disgust. Chelle bristled and a warning growl gathered in her chest. One dark brow arched over Siobhan’s eye, a silent challenge, daring Chelle to become hostile.
Chill out, Chelle. Play her game, get what you need and GTFO.
She’d never minded playing to Siobhan’s ego in the past.
But now, it caused Chelle’s hackles to rise. Chelle answered the dhampir’s hostility with a pleasant smile. Not too wide, though. She didn’t want to appear antagonistic by revealing her new set of fangs.
“I am a vampire,” Chelle replied. “But that’s the only thing that’s changed.”
Siobhan let out a soft snort. “You treat the absence of your soul with such triviality, Chelle. Your physiology isn’t the only thing that’s changed.”
The reminder of her untethered state might have caused Chelle pain if not for the absence of her soul. Siobhan thought to rattle her, but Chelle was too numb for deep emotion. Too empty to be anything but indifferent. Upon her turning, her soul had been sent into oblivion. The only way it would be returned to her was the moment her soul tethered itself to her mate’s. Fat chance of that happening anytime soon. “Oh, come on, Siobhan.” The formality between them was beginning to make Chelle twitch. “We’ve known each other for too long to play the whole frenemy angle.”
Siobhan’s haughty façade dropped for the barest moment and a corner of her mouth hitched into a half smile.
“Frenemies. Is that what we are, Chelle?”
Chelle laughed. “Not by a long shot.”
Siobhan’s gaze once again became serious and shrewd. “Mikhail is not your maker.”
A statement of fact. Chelle knew what Siobhan suspected. She couldn’t find any point in trying to deceive her. Siobhan was much too cunning for that. “No.”
“Then the legends are true.”
Chelle gave a slow nod of her head.
Fear chased across Siobhan’s expression. “I should take an axe to that coffin. Chop it into a million pieces and burn it to ash.”
Chelle hiked a shoulder. To be honest, she wouldn’t mourn its loss. Anything with the power to transform dhampirs to vampires and humans into demons probably wouldn’t be so easy to get rid of, however. “You won’t, though.” Siobhan would no more destroy a relic than she would cut off her own arm. She might have reviled the vampire race, but she recognized her heritage and sought to preserve their history just like Chelle. It was one thing they’d always had in common. History was meant to be remembered. The second you allowed yourself to forget, you were doomed to repeat the mistakes of those who came before you. Besides, knowledge was power. Siobhan collected relics and studied their history for exactly that reason.
“No,” Siobhan said as a matter of fact. Storm clouds gathered behind her eyes. “I won’t destroy it.”
And I’ll probably live to regret it.
The thought rang loud and clear from Siobhan’s mind as she pushed herself from her makeshift throne and approached Chelle. Chelle sensed the dhampir’s unease. The slightest bit of fear that soured her scent. Chelle did her best to remain calm and unassuming. Nonthreatening. It wasn’t easy. Her very nature urged her to capitalize on Siobhan’s unease. To make her prey. To sink her fangs into the creamy flesh of the female’s throat. The fire of thirst ignited in Chelle’s throat and she willed the flames to die. She’d feed from Lucas when she got back to the cottage. Until then, she could keep her shit together.
She had to.
Siobhan’s eyes lit with mischief. “I suppose Mikhail will think that allowing me to see you proves he’s a magnanimous king?”
Chelle let out a gentle chuff of breath. “You really think he’s responsible for me being here today? He hasn’t wanted me to leave the house, let alone come and see you. He doesn’t want me here. I insisted.”
Siobhan studied Chelle for a brief moment and took a measured breath. Scenting the air for any sign of a lie. She must have been satisfied by what she smelled because she smirked. “I knew you wouldn’t fall to your knees and pledge allegiance as easily as Ronan did.”
It was true that Chelle hadn’t exactly pledged loyalty to Mikhail. But only because her agenda didn’t run parallel to his. She had more important business than the fate of the race to weigh on her. There were other, more pressing mysteries that needed to be solved before Chelle could pledge her loyalty to anyone or anything other than herself and Lucas.
“I came for the Alexandria key.” She didn’t see any point in beating around the bush. Time to get down to business.
Siobhan’s eyes widened a fraction as realization dawned. She’s found the other two thirds. Chelle forced away the amusement that threatened. No one could ever say Siobhan wasn’t sharp as a tack.
“I’d forgotten about that . . .” Siobhan purred. Chelle could practically hear the gears cranking away in the female’s brain. “You wouldn’t be asking for it if you didn’t already know where the other two pieces are.”
Siobhan had in her safekeeping only one third of the key. If the legends were correct, the key wouldn’t work unless all three pieces were joined.
Chelle allowed a wide smile this time. She leveled her gaze on Siobhan. “Exactly.”
Siobhan’s own expression became hungry. No doubt Chelle would have to strike a deal to get the key back even though it was technically hers to begin with. Whatever the price, it would be worth it.
Siobhan’s smile grew as well. “Tell me more.”
The clean scent of freshly cut grass invaded Gunnar’s nostrils as he filled his lungs with the cool night air. His bare feet moved silently over the immaculate lawn that stretched out beyond the mansion that housed the pack. Pasadena was far enough from L.A. to offer him respite from the political turmoil stirred up by the vampires and Sortiari, and his estate was close enough to national forest land to allow the pack a place to run and hunt when the moon was full.
Apparently, though, Pasadena wasn’t far enough to avoid being drawn into a war he wanted no part of. Despite Aren’s advice that they choose a side, Gunnar knew that forming any alliance would only lead to disaster. He didn’t trust Ian Gregor. But neither did he harbor any love for the guardians of fate. It seemed only logical that the vampires would be forced to side with their enemies and fight alongside the Sortiari if the berserkers declared war. Whatever happened would have a ripple effect that would spread throughout the supernatural community. In the end, would any creature be left standing?
What a clusterfuck.
A blur of movement caught Gunnar’s eye. Almost too quick to track. The breeze shifted and he brought his nose up to sniff. A delicious scent wafted over him, waking the wolf that slept in his psyche. The animal tugged at Gunner’s consciousness, anxious and on edge. It urged him to investigate, damn near howling with impatience.
His cell buzzed in his pocket and he pulled it out to find a text from Aren.
Motion detectors tripped. North end of the property. Nothing on the cameras, want me to investigate?
Gunnar’s fingers moved over the screen as he typed a quick response. I’m outside. I’ll look into it. For some reason, instinct urged him to go it alone. It could have been his wolf’s arrogance. The pack Alpha shouldn’t need backup. But he sensed there was another reason for exercising caution and not alerting the pack to the possibility of an outsider being on the property. Gunnar only wished he knew what that reason was.
His phone vibrated again. I’ll join you.
A warning tremor raced down Gunnar’s spine. No need. He fired the text off quickly. I’ll call you.
Aren replied, 10–4. Gunnar rolled his eyes. Did his second have to channel his inner long-haul driver?
With silent steps, Gunnar stalked across the vast lawn toward the north end of the property and the mysterious streak of movement that had caught his eye. His heart picked up its pace, pounding against his rib cage. The scent that drove his wolf wild intensified, clouding Gunnar’s thoughts. The full moon was still two weeks away and yet he found himself give way to the animal in a way that shouldn’t have been possible.
He suspected magic might be in play. In which case, he’d need Aren and the entire pack to combat it. A witch or mage powerful enough to sway his wolf was to be treated with a certain amount of caution. And yet, Gunnar exercised none. He let his senses guide him as he tracked the intruder, past the south-side patio, the pond, and the garden. Gunnar whipped around as another flash of movement drew his attention and he looked up at the towering, three-story main house looming above him. The place was downright ominous in the low moonlight, its windows gazing over the property like watchful eyes. Whoever was brave enough to break into this fortress must’ve had a death wish as well. Because there was no way the intruder would make it out of here alive.
A warning growl gathered in Gunnar’s chest. But that cautionary sound wasn’t meant for any potential threat. No, Gunnar’s wolf was warning him. The suspicion that foul magic was at play grew within him and a chill raced down his spine. In all the centuries he’d walked the earth, Gunnar had never encountered a force that could create such divisiveness in his dual nature. He and the wolf lived in synchronicity. And yet he felt like an outsider in his own skin. As though he were the usurper of his form, and not the wolf.
Quiet the fuck down.
As though the command would carry any weight at all with the animal. Gunnar needed to get his shit together. Someone was on the property and not by any stretch of the imagination was the intruder friendly. Berserkers were fast. Faster than a werewolf. As fast as a vampire. And a single berserker in full battle rage could easily take out several foes without expending an ounce of effort.
Gunnar’s phone buzzed. He glanced down at the screen to see another text from Aren. Motion sensors, attic.
“Shit.” The word escaped from between clenched teeth. The only thing on the attic level was the safe. Someone thought to steal from him? Gunnar would rip the thief’s arms out of their sockets.
Gunnar didn’t bother with the front door. He scaled the trellis to the second story in a single leap and propelled himself onto the balcony. From there, he jumped up and grabbed the wrought-iron ladder on the third-story fire escape. His body swung in a graceful arc as he propelled himself onto the wide ledge of the bay window. The damn thing was latched but Gunnar didn’t waste any time putting his fist through the pane. The alarms on the property were programmed at a frequency that only a werewolf would hear. Pack members would be alerted to a forcible entry, but their thief would assume no one was the wiser.
Until Gunnar showed up to tear the fucker’s throat out.
Steal from him? Another growl rose in his throat. Gunnar willed his wolf to the back of his mind. He’d show the son of a bitch how he dealt with those who tried to take what belonged to the Forkbeard pack.
Gunnar climbed through the broken window. A jagged edge of broken glass caught his biceps and slashed the skin open. The pain barely registered through the haze of anger that washed over him. He’d heal. One of the benefits of being a werewolf. A warm trickle of blood ran down his upper arm and dripped from his elbow, marring the ancient tattoos that marked his skin to his forearms.
Gunnar’s bare feet padded with silent grace over the hardwood floors as he made his way to the safe room. The door was cracked, a sliver of light cut through the darkness like the slash of a well-honed blade. That delicious scent he’d tried to ignore slammed into him and Gunnar’s wolf howled in his psyche. The damned animal practically ran circles in his subconscious, eager as a pup on its first hunt.
Gunnar didn’t know what annoyed him more, that someone had the audacity to steal from him, or that his damned wolf refused to settle down.
Adrenaline dumped into his bloodstream as he neared the room. He eased open the door, and his anger flared as he noticed the thief had already managed to crack the safe door. Gods damn it. First thing tomorrow, he was replacing the entire unit. The pack owned too many invaluable assets to lose one because a crafty burglar could crack the safe. Fort Knox would have nothing on this place by the time he was done with it.
The safe door had been left wide open. Stupid mistake. The slender form of his thief, clad from head to toe in black, searched through the drawers, discarding one treasure after another. A frustrated sigh rent the quiet and Gunnar used the momentary distraction to pounce. He took the thief to the floor, slamming the bastard’s beanieclad head to the floor. A grunt of pain answered the blow but it didn’t faze the asshole. No. This one was damned strong.
He lifted the bastard up again, prepared to put his dome through the gods-damned floor. His wolf rose up with a snarl and Gunnar froze. His nostrils filled with the sweetest aroma, like a summer meadow after the rain. He snatched the beanie from the thief’s head to reveal long flowing locks of tawny hair. Deep green eyes that swirled with cold silver stared back at him.
Her eyes went wide and her jaw slack before she replaced her expression of awe with one of aggression. “Get off me, werewolf. I haven’t eaten today and it won’t take much to convince me to drink you dry.”
By the gods. A vampire. And female.
His wolf yipped in his psyche and a single word resonated in Gunnar’s mind: Mine. A worse omen, he couldn’t conceive of.

•••••

REVIEW: ALPHA by Madisyn Ashmore is a contemporary adult, paranormal romance story line focusing on Bond, Alaska alpha wolf shifter Aidan Channing, and human, female attorney Olivia Ryan.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Olivia and Aidan) ALPHA follows human attorney Olivia Ryan as she struggles with her first legal defense case for Alaskan wolf shifter Chase Reynolds. Chase has been charged with the murder of his human girlfriend Charlotte Smith, and Olivia will be Chase’s attorney for the upcoming trial. Enter Aidan Channing, the Bond Wolf Pack Alpha, and the man with whom Olivia would fall in love. What ensues is the quick building but forbidden relationship between Aidan and Olivia, the struggle for Olivia to be accepted by the Pack, and the search for the truth when as someone tries to prevent Olivia from defending Chase Reynolds.

Aidan Channing is the Bond Pack Alpha but battles the shifter hierarchy at every turn. Aidan does not have a mate and finding his forever in a human female does nothing to ingratiate the Alpha with the members of his Pack. Olivia’s presence in Bond, Alaska has awakened Aidan’s need to mate but the old laws are meant to prevent the mixing of shifters and humans much to the chagrin of our leading couple. The $ex scenes are seductive and intense.

We are introduced to a large number of secondary and supporting characters including Aidan’s brother Jameson Channing ; polar bear shifter and head of the shifter council Dominic Holmes; as well as several local shifters and their families.

ALPHA is an entertaining story line about the prejudice between human and shifters, specieism, and the love between two people that breaks through boundaries and walls. The premise is imaginative; the characters are colorful and animated; the romance is fated and passionate. ALPHA is an energetic tale with a lively cast of characters and a happily ever after.

Description:
They are the Arctic Brotherhood.

They are deadly fighters, fierce protectors and loyal mates.

Elliott Wilder is a mild mannered Alaskan college professor. Wilder craves the things most people find boring. Seclusion. Monotony. Anonymity. But what Wilder craves most of all is the thing he can’t have… memory loss. Four hundred years ago, Wilder and the other members of the Arctic Brotherhood were captured and tortured by the leader of the Siberian werewolves. Wilder is still haunted by memories of that night, when he wasn’t able to protect his leader.

Now the Siberian wolf is on the loose and seeking revenge. Not only must Wilder lead the brotherhood, he must fight the attraction he feels toward its newest recruit, Jenny Piper. Jenny offers Wilder a glimpse of the life he can’t have. As the brotherhood races against time to save humanity from the horror their enemies unleashed on the world, Wilder must reach inside himself to find the leader the brotherhood needs and the mate Jenny craves.

Review:

Ice Wolf by Jane Godman is the 1st book in her Arctic Brotherhood series.  This is a shifter series, with a new ancient species of Arctic werewolves, who are part of the 7 members of the Brotherhood of the Midnight Sun. The story begins 400 hundred years earlier, when the Siberian wolves were about to destroy the Arctic wolves; but at the last minute, the newest member of the Arctic Brotherhood managed to save his leader.  Switch to the present time, and we meet Elliot Wilder, a professor who is a loner, and content to live in solitude.  He is approached by someone he has not seen in 400 years, the leader of the Arctic wolves, and is asked to help gather the brotherhood together to fight someone so very evil that will destroy the world.   But Wilder has no intention to go back to that life, until he meets our heroine, Jenny Piper.   Jenny has always been alone, and now that she recognizes Wilder as one of her kind, she is determined to become part of a family.

Jenny is a strong heroine, a female alpha, who is accepted to the Arctic Brotherhood.  Wilder immediately is attracted to Jenny, but fights off those feelings, as he hasn’t told anyone about his nightmares of the time 400 years ago.  It will be Jenny who will help Wilder though those nightmares, and convince him to help his brothers, as his assistance is necessary to defeat the enemy, as humans across the world are threatened for destruction.

Wilder steps up, as he sees his Arctic brothers, and together they travel to the Land of the Midnight, where it all began to try to kill the Siberian wolf leader who is behind the threat.  But as they meet the wolf goddess, they are met with some major twists that changes the game, and escalates the danger.   Fenrir, the most evil and powerful wolf, has escaped his captivity, and in the guise of a cult leader, he is quickly brainwashing all humans to follow him; and then destroy them all.  Can the Arctic wolves stop Fenrir in time?

What follows is an exciting adventure steeped in Norse mythology, with edge of your seat non-stop action.  Wilder will step into the role of leader, especially after Jenny’s life is in danger.  Jenny made a wonderful partner to Wilder, and tense exciting race to catch Fenrir brought the entire team together to try and save the world.  This was an excellent start to a different shifter series, which will continue in future books, with each member of the Arctic Brotherhood taking a leading role in more upcoming dangerous missions.   I loved all the characters that made this Brotherhood. I look forward to reading the next book, Shadow Wolf.

Review:

Shadow Wolf by Jane Godman is the 2nd book in her Arctic Brotherhood series. Having enjoyed the first book in this series, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Shadow Wolf was equally or a bit better then Ice Wolf.

In Shadow Wolf, Samson Lee takes the lead, as he is summoned by his friend, a former retired member of the Arctic Brotherhood.  Seems that his daughter, is missing, and he wants Samson to find her.  Valetta Rickard, our heroine, has gone undercover, joining a group of Arctic Wolves (not the Brotherhood).  Valetta is determined to find out who is trying to kill her father, as well as discover the truths about the legend of Shadow Born.  When Samson finds her, she is considered the leader of this group of Arctic misfits, and he joins the group to help her.  Samson senses not all is right, and once he convinces Valetta that something is very wrong, they begin to work together to discover what is really happening.

Valetta has always had a crush on Samson, but he has always treated her like his friends daughter, keeping his distance.  Samson lost his wife hundreds of years before, being murdered in an attack; he blames himself and for all those years he has not looked at another woman.  Valetta in a short time, with them being together during the adventure, slowly uses her charms and feelings to weaken Samson’s resolve.   They made such a great couple, and both were also very powerful.   The story line of the Shadow born was very interesting, which added to the element of finding the truth of her past, and who is behind the evil.

The action became especially exciting when the entire Arctic Brotherhood joins Samson and Valetta to stop the evil behind the mask.  Not only was it very exciting, but also surprising as another evil being from hundreds of years ago is the villain.  Valetta will learn the truth about who she is, and there are some very emotional moments, as well as dangerous death defying moments.  Shadow Wolf was an excellent story, which I read in one day.  I look forward to the next installment of the Arctic Brotherhood series, and to see what Jane Godman has in store for us.

Ancient powers stir, and Mercy must be her agile best to avoid causing a war between vampires and werewolves, and between werewolves and werewolves. And in the heart of the ancient city of Prague, old ghosts rise…

Review:

Silence Fallen by Patricia Briggs is the 10th book in her wonderful Mercy Thompson series.  Mercy has evolved quite a lot over the last 9 books, and in Silence Fallen we get to see more of the powers she has within her.   Patricia Briggs once again gives us an exciting story with one of our favorite couples, Mercy and Adam.

When the story begins, the werewolf pack is having fun eating and playing games.  Mercy decides to make a meal for the gang, and has to run out to buy eggs. As she gets ready to head home, someone smashes her car and renders her unconscious.  When Mercy awakes, she discovers she has been kidnapped and cannot feel her bond to Adam, disabling any possibility of contact to him.  A powerful European vampire is behind the kidnapping and Mercy is on her own to find a way to escape.

Adam enlists the aid of Stefan and Marsilia (vampires), as well as the witch, Elizaveta to help him find Mercy.  What follows is an exciting adventure that will have Mercy escaping in a set up to kill her, but she of course, manages to get away alive.  Being alone, with no one to trust, she finds herself Prague, looking for help from both dangerous wolves and vampires .  Who can Mercy trust?

Adam and his group arrive in Italy to meet the vampire who kidnapped Mercy.  Adam was able to have a slight contact to Mercy finding out she has escaped, but it was minimal.  His goal is to find out why the vampire kidnapped Mercy and to make sure the vampires out searching for her do not kill her.  Adam must learn to control his wolf, and try to negotiate with the vampire; while his pack at home use all means to discover where Mercy is.

It was an interesting story, which was really in two different POV’s, Adam and Mercy.  The brunt of the story had them separate for most of the book.  Mercy will find herself kidnapped again by another powerful but crazy vampire, and in order to save herself from sure death, she must find a way to use her ghost magnet ability to get them to help her.    Interesting and wild stuff; especially as we near the end, when we see much more of what she can do.  It was a wild pulse pounding tense finish, and I loved every moment of it.  Most of all, I loved the ending with Adam and Mercy together.   I would like to go back and reread this again, since so much happens along the way.  This is a great series, great heroine, great couple and always wonderfully written by Briggs.  If you have not read the Mercy Thompson series, and love paranormal, shifters, wolves; it is time to start reading this series.

About the book: Release Date: September 6, 2016

She wasn’t ready to lead…

Chosen as the Guardian of her Montana Shiftertown, wolf Shifter Rae Lyall is facing opposition—for no woman has ever been selected for this powerful position. Still adjusting to the new authority thrust upon her, Rae travels to train with Zander Moncrieff, a Shifter healer, tasked with teaching her about her new role and its responsibilities.

He wasn’t ready to love…

A polar bear Shifter, Zander wears no Collar and follows no rules but his own. Rae finds him arrogant and demanding, yet compelling and intriguing. Zander has no wish to mate but the sassy Guardian is drawing him out of his shell, stirring feelings long suppressed. And when a new threat looms over Rae’s home, she and Zander must race to the rescue, forced closer to danger…and to each other.

••••••••••

REVIEW: GUARDIAN’S MATE is the ninth full length installment in Jennifer Ashley’s contemporary, adult SHIFTERS UNBOUND paranormal/fantasy romance series. This is polar bear shifter/healer Alexander ‘Zander’ Moncrief, and lupine shifter/Guardian Rae Lyall’s story line GUARDIAN’S MATE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty but for cohesion and backstory I recommend reading the series in order.

SOME BACKGROUND: Thousands of years in the past, the Fae created the shifters-a cross between beast and man-and in the ensuing time the Fae lost control and power over the creatures they had created. Approximately twenty years ago shifters were exposed to the human population. Out of fear, discrimination and specieism, the shifters were collared with Fae magic in the belief that it would control aggression; then they were forced into segregated communities known as Shiftertowns. There are several Shiftertowns located throughout America where shifters live in a relative but strained peace amongst their own kind.

Told from several third person perspectives GUARDIAN’S MATE focuses on the first female Guardian, chosen by the goddess, and the resulting fall out when the shifters of the Montana Shiftertown don’t take too kindly to a woman in charge. Hoping to protect his daughter from potential harm, Montana Shiftertown leader Eoin Lyall sends Rae to Alaska and reclusive polar bear shifter Alexander Moncrief for training and protection. What ensues is the building relationship between Zander and Rae, and threats against out couple when a vigilante bounty hunter takes aim at everything shifter. A group of feral shifters has targeted both human and shifter populations, and Zander and Rae are caught up in the fight.

Xander Moncrief is a healer imbued with magical, empathic powers that have forced our hero into a reclusive life where the pain and suffering of others is far from his mind. Rae is a young shifter, barely past her transition, and the first woman chosen as the Guardian of her kind. The Guardian is tasked with ‘sending’ their dead to the Summerland-the shifter ‘after life’-but Rae has never been trained to handle the magical sword that is usually passed down from father to son. Xander Moncrief must temper his emotions as it pertains to the feisty lupine Guardian but attraction and the mating frenzy begin to over power our couple even as they are on the run from the people trying to destroy their lives. The romance is very slow to build; the $ex scenes are intimate and provocative.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including several shifters we have met in previous story lines, as well as the introduction of lupine shifter Ezra Wilcox, a man whose aging father recently passed away; Miles Keegan, a boat captain who hides a secret from the people with whom he works; Zander’s friend Piotr Ivanov who adds a little bit of humor and fun; and human Carson McCade, a man out to avenge the attack on his wife.

GUARDIAN’S MATE is a story line that follows a new arc for the series focusing on an impending war between the shifters and the Fae. The premise is entertaining; the romance is a bit of push and pull as Zander tries to keep his distance while the couple is on the run; the characters are an eclectic and colorful mix of shifters and humans. GUARDIAN’S MATE is an imaginative tale of adventure, action and romance. If you like paranormal story lines about shifters and their struggle in a world controlled by humans and the Fae, check out Jennifer Ashley’s SHIFTERS UNBOUND series.
