The biggest news lately is Ruby Dye: she’s been receiving gifts from a secret admirer. But Ruby isn’t sure she can trust this newfound happiness. Nobody knows the dark secrets she keeps about her life before she arrived in Blessings. Is this the beginning of a would-be romance, or is she the target of something more sinister?

Everyone admires Ruby and her determination to do the right thing, especially local lawyer “Peanut” Butterman. He’s finally ready to tell her how he feels. But when trouble arrives on Ruby’s doorstep and their little town is threatened, Peanut may have to prove himself in ways he never imagined.

Review:

The Color of Love by Sharon Sala is the 5th book in her Blessings, Georgia series.  Having read all the books in this series, I was looking forward to reading The Color of Love, as Ruby Dye is the heroine.  Ruby has been from the start, the heart of everyone in Blessings, Georgia, as she is always the one who will help them when in need.  She is the one everyone loves, as they know they can always count on Ruby.  Now this is her story, and it was awesome from start to finish.

In the last book, we learned that Ruby has a secret admired in town, and she prays its Peanut Butterman (the local lawyer).  Before he can tell her how he feels, and he is her secret admirer, Ruby is attacked and brutally beaten by her ex-husband.  She manages to escape, and hurt her ex, who is then captured.   Peanut and the sheriff Lon, bring her home where she will be brought to Peanut’s house to recover.  Everyone in town comes forth to help Ruby, and in no time she is able to return to her salon, and helping others. She is also thrilled to know that Peanut loves her, and soon their romance becomes known and the town is happily congratulating them.  But just when things are going good, Ruby is once again attacked by her ex’s brother, and Peanut is shot trying to save Ruby.

Ruby falls apart, as she fears for Peanut’s life, which hangs precariously; when he does regain conscious, his memory is gone, and he does not know Ruby.   The wonderful town will support Ruby, who will force herself to get back to work and help others.  There are also two side stories that are nicely done, especially with the great people of Blessings.  When Peanut suffers a seizure that once again puts him close to death, Ruby prepares herself for his loss.

What follows is a heartwarming & emotional story, on many levels, with Ruby and with the other two side stories.  Blessings, Georgia is a wonderful small town, with great characters, and couples that you always root hard for.

Sharon Sala writes another fabulous story that had us hooked from the start.  She amazes me that she continually gives us such great couples that we become invested in, with each and every book.  The Color of Love was a sweet romance, with a lovable couple, wonderful secondary characters that we have come to love and with a touch of suspense.   If you enjoy a pure romance, wonderful characters, great couples, and a small town atmosphere, then you should be reading this series.

Chief Pittman drove through town with lights flashing, then pulled into the alley behind the bar to the small, clapboard house.
There was no smoke coming out of the fireplace, no lights on anywhere inside, and when he saw the front door open and a tall, gangly boy and a huge bloodhound emerging, he jumped out to open the back door of his cruiser.
As he did, a woman followed them out. She was blue from cold and shivering. She coughed, then couldn’t stop. Then the boy approached and held out his hand.
“I’m Charlie Conroy, Sir. Thank you for calling.”
Lon wondered how desperate they were and then decided to deal with that later.
“You can put your dog in the back and ride up front with me.”
“Yes sir,” Charlie said, loaded up Booger, then got into the front seat.
Lon turned around.
“Mrs. Conroy, I’m Chief Pittman. Thank you for allowing your boy to help us. I’ll have him back as soon as possible, okay?”
“Yes, it’s okay,” she said.
And then another little voice piped up, and Lon saw a tiny little girl standing in the doorway, also wearing her coat over her clothes. She was crying.
“Mommy, Mommy, I’m cold.”
“I have to go,” Alice said, and ran back to the doorway, picked up the little girl and disappeared into the house, shutting the door behind her as she went.
Lon got in. The boy was already buckled up.
“We’re going straight to the nursing home.”
“Yes, sir,” Charlie said, his heartbeat jumping as the Chief drove away.
“So what’s going on at your house? Don’t you have any heat?”
“We don’t have any utilities, sir. We got cut off.”
“When was this?” Lon asked.
“Oh, a few days ago, but I’ll get the money earned to get them back on.”
“Is this why you put out the fliers?” Lon asked.
Charlie nodded.
“That was very industrious. How old are you?” Lon said.
“I’m twelve, but I am the man of the family now,” Charlie said, and then turned his head as they passed the school, looking at it with a mixture of longing and despair.
Another two blocks and he pulled up in front of the nursing home. One of his deputies was already there gathering info, while the other one on duty was back at the station. People were gathering here as the news had spread, ready to help search.
“Here we go,” Lon said, as he pulled up and parked. “You get your hound and follow me.”
“Yes sir,” Charlie said, and leaped out, grabbed Booger’s leash, and took off after the Chief.
Nathan Rose, the nursing home administrator, was trying not to panic as he explained what he knew to the Deputy, Ralph Herman.
“We’ve never had this happen before,” Nathan said. “We lock the doors at night and everything. Wanda is the one who discovered her absence.”
Ralph eyed the aide in purple scrubs. She looked to be in her late twenties, and she also looked scared to death, like someone was going to lay the blame of this on her.
“So, Wanda, how did you know she was missing?” Ralph asked.
“She wasn’t in her bed when I came on duty at six a.m., so I went looking for her, assuming she’d just fallen asleep somewhere else inside the building. They do that sometimes, but I couldn’t find her. That’s when we all began to search. She’s not here.”
“Were there any unlocked doors?” Ralph asked.
Willa’s shoulders slumped.
“The one from the kitchen leading out into the back alley. There’s an extra lock up high. She’s so little, I don’t know how she reached to open it.”
“Either someone helped her, or it was unintentionally left unlocked,” Nathan said. “It’s the only explanation.”
“Have you notified her next of kin?” the deputy asked.
“She doesn’t have any,” Nathan said. “She brought herself here three years back and hasn’t had a visitor from outside Blessings, since.”
At that point, the Chief walked up and didn’t waste time explaining.
“Nathan, I need something that belongs to Gertie…something that would have her scent on it…like her shoes… of a piece of her clothing…something that hasn’t yet been washed.”
Nathan saw the boy and the bloodhound and didn’t ask questions.
“Wanda, you heard him. Bring something that will have Gertie’s scent on it.”
Wanda turned and ran into the building as the deputy recognized the boy.
“Hey, that’s the kid from the flyer,” he said, then glanced at Lon. “Good call, Chief.”
“If it works, we can all thank Peanut Butterman. It was his suggestion.”
Charlie had outgrown his coat months ago, and had been wearing his Daddy’s clothes all winter, but he didn’t have a coat. It had burned up in the explosion. He shivered slightly as he waited, thinking nothing of the discomfort because it had become the norm, but Lon saw it.
“Be right back,” he said, and jogged toward his cruiser, popped the trunk and then came back with a heavy, fleece-lined flannel jacket. “Put this on,” he said, as he handed it to Charlie.
Charlie’s eyes widened.
“I might get it dirty.”
“Son, it’ll wash,” Lon said. “Put it on.”
Charlie didn’t argue. The warmth that enveloped him was so welcome it brought tears to his eyes.
“I thank you,” Charlie whispered.
Lon patted the boy’s shoulder as Wanda came running back holding a pair of cotton socks.
“Gertie wore these yesterday. They were still in her shoes. Will this work?”
Lon glanced at Charlie, who nodded.
“They’ll do just fine,” Charlie said, then glanced at Lon. “Are you ready, Chief?”
Lon glanced around at the small crowd of people who’d gathered to help search.
“We’re going to try this first before we send everyone out in differing directions. If some of you want to go home, you’re welcome. But if there are any who want to follow us and the hound, then fan out in a grid behind him and do your best to keep up.”
A few waved and headed back to their cars, but a good dozen of them stayed.
Lon heard one searcher call out.
“That hound won’t track. I reckon the rain has washed out her tracks and scent.”
“We’ll see,” Lon said, and watched as Charlie Conroy got down on one knee and shoved the socks up under Booger’s nose.
As he did, the hound began to whine, as if sensing he’d just be given a task.
“Hunt, Booger! Hunt!” Charlie said.
The massive bloodhound lifted his head, sniffing the air, then put nose to ground and moved toward the back of the building with Charlie hanging onto the leash. The moment they reached the back door, Booger bayed.
“He’s on the scent,” Charlie cried, and off they went, through two blocks of housing, across the baseball field and then up into the woods, with the cops and the searchers behind them.

Review:

When the Stars Come Out by Laura Trentham is the 5th book in her wonderful Cottonbloom series.  I have enjoyed every book in this series, and this book is no different….I loved When The Stars Come Out.

Willa Brown, our heroine, has worked at the Abbot garage for the two years she has been in Cottonbloom.  Willa loves her job, as she grew up fixing cars, but she keeps secrets about her past life, knowing when anyone gets too close, she will run.   Jackson Abbot and the rest of the Abbot boys think highly of Willa, as one of the best mechanics.  Jackson has always befriended Willa, as his whole life is about cars, but now he begins to see her in another light.  Willa has always been attracted to Jackson, but hides how she feels.  Jackson and the family sense that Willa is hiding something, and Jackson begins to fear she will leave, and gives her a big raise to keep her.  In a short time, both will begin to spend more time out of the garage, as Jackson tries to help her, since her makeshift living quarters are bad.  When a mutt comes to Willa one day, she feeds him and earns his trust, and soon River (the mutt) will follow her to work, and the boys will also accept River.

Soon Willa and Jackson, will act on their feelings, and a steamy romance will start.  Willa still looks over her shoulder, not trusting how happy she is with Jackson. He is determined to get her to talk and find out what she is running from.  He never thought he would fall in love, but now that he loves Willa, he will do anything to keep her.  I really did enjoy Sutton’s new friendship with Willa, and the fun of watching her help Willa dress up to attend a New Year’s Party.  When she realizes that she loves Jackson, she does reveal some truths to him, and though scared, will go back home to bring some kind of closure.  Jackson will get help from his family to find and help Willa, which was very nicely done.

There is a side story about  the bad brother, Ford,  who is putting the garage at risk by selling his share to someone else.  This will lead to the next book, with I think Mack as the hero.

I really loved Jackson and Willa together; as their romance was sweet, sexy and emotional.  Jackson was not only sweet and caring, but he was a hunk.  Willa was a strong, independent & likable heroine;  with some sassy humor.

When The Stars Come Out reads very well as a standalone.  It was a wonderful storyline, and great to see all the other characters that we have come to know from the previous books.   Laura Trentham once again gives us a wonderful story, great characters, fabulous couple, heartwarming small town atmosphere, and a sweet wonderful romance. You should be reading this series, and I can’t wait to return to Cottonbloom.

Hi Laura.  Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions today. We are always looking forward to reading about the author behind the book.

TRC:  Would you please tell us something about yourself?

Laura:  I am a former chemical engineer and stay-at-home mom who has always been an avid reader. Once my youngest started school, I needed something to occupy me. Going back to engineering wasn’t attractive because I didn’t want to put the kids in daycare if I could help it. In January 2012, I dropped the kids off at school, sat down at my computer, and started what would be An Indecent Invitation, Book 1 of my Regency romance series Spies and Lovers. Six weeks later when I triumphantly typed The End, I didn’t know what a mess it was. But I learned. And learned and learned and rewrote and rewrote that book. That book got me an agent, finaled in the Golden Heart®, and was my first manuscript to sell to a publisher. I was in my early 40s. To me it’s a lesson in reinvention and following your passion no matter how old you are. What’s more important is how hard you’re willing to work and how willing you are to learn.

TRC: You write such wonderful romances in each book of your Cottonbloom series.  Can you give us a brief description of When the Stars Come Out, and how you continue to come up with ideas for this series.

Laura: When the Stars Come Out is the 5th book in the Cottonbloom series but can be read as a standalone. It’s set in the Louisiana side of Cottonbloom and features Willa Brown, a female mechanic who works at Abbott Brothers Garage and Restoration. She’s hiding from her past and nurturing a crush on Jackson Abbott. Jackson is a broody loner (and twin brother of Wyatt from Leave the Night On) who finally notices Willa as more than his right-hand woman in the garage. It’s both a dream and nightmare situation for Willa who is terrified her past will put Jackson in danger.

My husband is a classic car lover and restores them in his spare time. I’ve watched many, many hours of car shows. I got the idea for the Abbott Brothers from a show called Fast and Loud which is a reality show set in a car restoration business in Texas. But I get ideas from news stories, music, and even commercials.

TRC:  What is your writing process?  Do you like to write at specific times, in a special place?

Laura:  Process? I don’t need no stinkin’ process! (<- Blazing Saddles reference:) I don’t do much (any) preplotting. I get an idea, which invariably includes the opening scene, and I sit down to write it. I let the story naturally unfold. This is where having a science background of logical cause and effect relationships helps. Although the discoveries along the way are exhilarating, it can also be a little scary, because I have a fear that *this time* it’s not going to work. Somehow I seem to find my way to the end of every book. I have school age kids so by necessity I write while they are in school. I’m not a writer who needs a ritual. I have an office in my house, but sometimes I like kicking back on the couch with my laptop. I actually get more words down if I’m forced out of my house (the internet is a productivity killer.) I’ll also use my phone and dictate while I’m in car line if I get behind. Basically, I prescribe to the Tim Gunn Make It Work mantra.

Thank you, Laura for answering our questions. The Reading Café wishes you the best of luck with When the Stars Come Out

Willa glanced down and back up at Jackson through her lashes. The gentle, flirtatious look hit him like a punch. This time his heart kicked like he might require someone to call 911. “Do I clean up good?”
He knew what she wanted to hear and later, in the dark solitude of his bed, he’d tell her and, even better, show her. But, for now, he tempered his response, hoping to get a rise out of her. “Not bad.”
She stepped forward and punched his arm. It might have stung if she hadn’t tipped to the side as her fist made contact. Her eyes popped wide and a little huff escaped. With reaction times honed on the racetrack, he wrapped his arm around her waist, bringing her flush with his body.
“You sure you know how to operate those shoes?” This time he couldn’t keep the smile off his face.
“They don’t require a license. And I was doing fine until you showed up.”
Her admission made him feel slightly better. He wasn’t the only one who was off balance. Her body notched into his perfectly with the added inches the heels lent her. His focus dropped from her sparking eyes to her mouth. Maybe he’d kiss the gloss off them right now. His lips hovered an inch from hers. So close he could feel the ramp-up of her breathing. Or was that his breathing spinning out of control?

An award-winning author, Laura Trentham was born and raised in a small town in Tennessee. Although, she loved English and reading in high school, she was convinced an English degree equated to starvation. She chose the next most logical major—Chemical Engineering—and worked in a hard hat and steel toed boots for several years.

She writes sexy, small town contemporaries and smoking hot Regency historicals. KISS ME THAT WAY, Cottonbloom Book 1, won the Stiletto Contest for Best Long Contemporary and finaled in the National Readers Choice Award. THEN HE KISSED ME, Cottonbloom Book 2, was named an Amazon Best Romance of 2016 and was a finalist for the National Excellence for Romance Fiction. TILL I KISSED YOU, Cottonbloom Book 3, is a finalist in the Maggie contest. LEAVE THE NIGHT ON, the latest Cottonbloom book, was named an iBooks Best Book of the Month and a Recommended Read from NPR.

When not lost in a cozy Southern town or Regency England, she’s shuttling kids to soccer, helping with homework, and avoiding the Mt. Everest-sized pile of laundry that is almost as big as the to-be-read pile of books on her nightstand.

You Say It First by Susan Mallery – a Review

You Say It First by Susan Mallery – a Review

You Say It FirstAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:
Sculptor Nick Mitchell grew up in a family of artists and learned from his volatile father that passion only leads to pain. As he waits on a new commission, he takes a day job as a humble carpenter at a theme wedding venue. The job has its perks—mainly the venue’s captivating owner, Pallas Saunders. Although he won’t let love consume him, for ecstasy with an expiration date, he’s all in.

Pallas adores Weddings in a Box. But if she can’t turn the floundering business around, she’ll have no choice but cave to her domineering mother and trade taffeta for trust funds working at the family’s bank. Then when a desperate bride begs Pallas for something completely out of the box, her irresistible new hire inspires her. Nick knows she doesn’t belong behind a desk, and she knows in her heart that he’s right—where she really belongs is in his arms.

Review:

You Say It First by Susan Mallery is the 1st book in her new Happily,Inc. series.  We meet our heroine, Pallas Saunders, immediately as she is in the midst of handling a wedding. Pallas is a wedding planner, in her ‘Weddings in a Box’ business.   What is Weddings in a Box?  It is different types of themes that are dreams of the bride and groom; such as Roman Empire, Aliens, Dessert, Ocean, etc.  Pallas inherited this business from her deceased friend, who she considered a father figure.  She loves what she does, but is under pressure from her mother to quit this business and work at the bank with her mother.

Nick Mitchell is a famous sculptor, who comes from a family of well known sculptors.  Nick works with wood, his brother’s work with glass, etc.  Nick is in between work, as he is waiting for commission to work in Dubai for two years, but it will be a couple of months before he finds out.   He ends up helping Pallas, by dressing up as a Roman Warrior, as part of the current wedding theme.  Nick also notices some of the woodwork that Pallas has stored is old and decaying, but worth a lot of money.  Nick is determined to fix and renew the wood, since it is his hobby too.  Pallas will agree, and in time a friendship begins that will form into a slow build romance.

Mallery has created a great group of characters, which included all of Pallas’s friends, who work locally and help her create the wedding designs.  Nick’s brothers were also a big part of this story.  I loved how they all bonded, and their creativity to create amazing wedding themes for Pallas.  Another major part of the story was the family issues surround both Pallas and Nick.  Pallas is always being pressured by her mom, but Nick will help her stand up to her mother.  Nick in turn has his own family problems with his famous father, and with one of his brothers, who learned he was adopted, and has become somewhat distant.   These were good stories that added to the overall storyline.

As Nick and Pallas’s romance heats up, she knows she has fallen in love with Nick. He cares about her, but is afraid to commit to anything permanent, since he feels it will only lead to hurt. Will Nick take the job in Dubai for two years?  Will Pallas tell Nick her true feelings?

You Say It First is a very nice romance, wonderful characters and set in a sweet small town.  I recommend that you read this book, written very well by Susan Mallery.

Bittersweet by Shirlee McCoy – a Review

BittersweetAmazon / B&N / Kobo / BAM / Book Depository

Description:

Caring family and friends, tranquil streets—ex-prosecutor Willow Lamont wishes these could make her feel truly at home. She’s back to help her grandfather manage Chocolate Haven, a long held dream come true. But she’s struggling to make their unique fudge—and to cope with a secret trauma that haunts her. Yet when she finds an abandoned baby who breaks her heart wide open, she wonders how long she can hide her emotions—especially from warm, handsome, and way too nosey Deputy Sheriff Jax Gordon.

Always an outsider, Jax knows more than he should about loss. But he didn’t expect his difficult search for baby “Miracle’s” mother would reveal such a vulnerable side to the accomplished, beautiful woman he’s always admired. Earning Willow’s trust is the hardest thing he’s ever had to do. Yet between her honesty and courage, he’s longing to fill her life with rekindled joy—and a forever of irresistible love

Review:

Bittersweet by Shirlee McCoy is the 3rd book in her Home Sweet Home series. Willow Lamont is our heroine, having returned home temporarily to help her grandfather run Chocolate Haven.  With her two sisters (previous story heroines) busy with a marriage or babies, Willow spends her free hours making chocolate and failing on making the family secret fudge recipe.  Willow has nightmares, due to a rape when she was only 13, and has kept this a secret all these years; one reason she does not like to come home.

One evening, while working late, she hears a noise outside and calls the cops.  Jax Gordon, the deputy sheriff and our hero, arrives to find out what is wrong.  Willow describes a car stopping and then pulling away.  Together Jax and Willow will find an abandoned baby by the dumpster.  When they are at the hospital for the baby, Jax recognizes that Willow is hiding some kind of trauma, and when it comes to that, Jax is an expert.  He himself has his own nightmares of having his own family murdered years before.

What follows is a slow build sweet romance between Jax and Willow, with the mystery of finding the person to dumped the baby.  Despite their determination to not have any relationship, they both start falling for each other.  It was really nice to see the Lamont family again, as well as the backdrop of making chocolate.  Willow will foster the baby called Miracle, temporarily until she is well enough to be adopted.

Bittersweet was a very nice romance, with a couple that each had their own mentally disabling issues.  Willow will slowly learn to put the past behind her, and realize that she loves being home again.  The only problem is she needs to help Jax move on from his past, as he fears being hurt again.  Once again, Shirlee McCoy gives us another wonderful story, surrounded by a great family, in the small town of Benevolence, Washington.  If you enjoy small town romances, I suggest you read the Home Sweet Home series

Description:
Maddie Frye, the Checkerberry Inn’s snarky, introverted chef, just wants to be left alone. But with the inn’s upcoming gala, Maddie’s boss has matchmaking on the brain. So when the gorgeous new guy in town helps her out for a night, she comes up with the perfect solution to her problem…

He’s got to help his sexy new coworker snag a date for an upcoming dance. But as he coaches Maddie on attracting her crush, Cole realizes he’s the one falling for the curvy brunette.

Review:

Her Unexpected Hero by Kyra Jacobs is a fun read for the summer. I read it in one afternoon. It is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone, without reading the others first.

Maddie loves her job, she’s just not a “people person” she just wants to cook and live her life on her own terms. Maddie might lack self confidence in the outside world, but in her kitchen …. she is in total control and it’s her domain. And when her boss decides that Maddie needs a date to the Inns party, it puts her in a panic, but Maddie has no intention of being “paired up” so she looks for an alternative “date”…. she knows the perfect guy, but she doesn’t know his name and doesn’t have the confidence to go up to the guy and ask him out.

Cole is looking for escape out of small town dreary life. He’s got a dark past and secrets that he just wants to escape from, and he doesn’t think he can in a small town, his past has turned him into a cynical and hard man. All he wants is to build a studio to record music, but doesn’t have enough money.

So with enough money in his pocket he intends to start a new life and a new adventure.
Hired as the new dishwasher for the Inn, Cole is asked to help Maddie prepare for a date, to gain confidence, but what Cole gets is to see the other side of Maddie, and he begins to regret teaching her on how to get her man.

The story flows nicely and the characters are well written, I’ve not read the other two stories previous to this, but I may be tempted to go and have a read.

Mike’s dad saw to that some ten years ago when he ordered him to leave town and never come back. Of course he didn’t figure on getting roped into being best man at his sister’s upcoming wedding, but as long as Michael’s back in town, he figures he s got a second chance with the girl who got away Heather Walker.

Long-legged Heather has had a love/hate relationship with the town bad boy ever since he christened her Stilts in middle school. She was voted most likely to succeed. Michael seemed destined for the state pen. Even so, she hopes there’s more to him than leathers and a Harley, for his family’s sake if nothing else. But while her fascination with him grows, a decade-old secret involving a member of “her” family threatens to tear them apart…

Review:

A Coldwater Warm Hearts Wedding by Lexi Eddings is the 2nd book in her Coldwater series.  Heather Walker, our heroine, is Lacy Evans’s (previous book heroine) best friend. Heather, who is a nurse, is helping take care of Lacy’s mother who has just had an operation for breast cancer.   Michael Evans, our hero, is Lacey’s brother, who left home 10 years ago after fallout with his father, but finally returns home to see his mother.

Lacy’s convinces Michael to stay awhile and be Jake’s best man at the wedding. Heather remembers Michael as the boy who called her “Stilts”, and he was always one of the bad boys in town.  Now that Michael is grown up, the attraction between them also heats up.  Michael has built himself a successful business, which no one really knows about.  Michael decides to move some of his crew to Coldwater Cover temporarily, so that he can watch over his mother’s recovery; attend the wedding as best man and explore the feelings he begins to have for Heather. To Heather’s surprise, she too is falling in love with Michael, and she knows he will not be there long.

There is also a mystery revolving Heather’s deceased sister, who died 10 years before.  Because of that, Heather  avoids her family as much as she can, thinking they wished it was her who died in the accident.  But there will be some surprises that will not only change things, but threaten the growing relationship between Michael and Heather.   This will also open the door for Michael and his father to mend, as the truth is revealed.

I liked Michael and Heather together, as well as many of the secondary characters.  This was a sweet romance, with a bit of mystery that will have us worried if our couple will not be able to stay together.  The ending also had a surprise twist.  The Coldwater Warm Hearts Wedding  was another nice sweet romance by Lexi Eddings, with a small town background and a great couple.  I suggest you start with the first book in this series.
