REVIEW: BROKEN PROMISE is the third full-length instalment in Tara Thomas’ contemporary, adult SONS OF BROAD romantic suspense series. This is Charleston Police Officer Alyssa Adams, and billionaire businessman Kipling Benedict’s story line. BROKEN PROMISE can be read as a stand alone but I recommend reading the series in order for cohesion and backstory as there is a continuing premise and theme throughout.

Told from several third person points of view including Alyssa and Kipling BROKEN PROMISE follows the building but forbidden relationship between Charleston Police Officer Alyssa Adams, and billionaire Kipling Benedict. Weeks earlier Officer Adams arrested Kipling Benedict on suspicion of murder but in the ensuing time Alyssa is all too well aware that there is more going down than meets the eye. With the body count rising, and each successive murder linked back to the Benedict brothers and their significant others, Alyssa’s own family history begins to unravel as threats against our heroine finds Kipling and Alyssa working together to reveal the truth. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Alyssa and Kipling, as they are pulled into a game of cat and mouse wherein Alyssa and Kipling have been targeted by someone from the past.

BROKEN PROMISE is the culmination of several story lines including the original three-part serial that focused on deception and revenge; jealousy and envy. The Benedict brothers have been pulled into the ‘Gentleman’s’ game of vengeance, a game that involved murder, torture and the ultimate act of betrayal. The premise is entertaining and engaging; the characters are charismatic; the romance is passionate and fated. I did struggle with the slow progress of events throughout the story; I am hoping the author has plans for Jade.

Though he would deny it if asked, Kipling Benedict felt oddly out of place at his younger brother’s vow renewal. He chalked it up to both of his younger brothers now be- ing in committed relationships, but that didn’t make him feel any better. In fact, as he stood by Knox and listened as he pledged to love, honor, and cherish his wife, Bea, Kipling actually felt worse.
Worse because he was envious of what his brothers had. Though he could pound his fists into something, it wouldn’t change anything. He’d accepted a long time ago that his station in life was to be alone. Having fallen in love hard and fast in college, paired with only being seen for his net worth, left him not wanting to try again. Being alone was so much easier.
However, at times such as this, he became acutely aware of the differences between acceptance and contentment. Because while he may have accepted that he would be alone, he was not content.
“You may kiss your bride,” the minister said, dragging him back to the small historic chapel Bea had selected for the renewal.
Kipling clapped as his brother took his wife in his arms

and dipped her low, snagging a kiss while he did so. They both looked so blissfully in love, he couldn’t help but smile at the joy and peace seen in the couple. If anyone deserved a happily ever after, they did. They had originally married in secret, but more than that, they’d both narrowly escaped with their lives after a security guard hired to protect Bea turned out to be the thug who had beat her up and left her for dead months earlier.
Kipling had asked Knox a few days ago if he was ready to give up his bachelor status forever since he was going public with his wedding this time. They’d been outside. Tilly sat at a nearby table in the garden and both Keaton and Bea sat with her. From what Kipling was able to pick up on, they were looking at a map and trying to determine the best location for a public vegetable garden. Bea looked up and winked at Knox.
His brother had only replied, “The wedding won’t come soon enough for me.”
Kipling felt the truth in his words that day, but now he saw it as the happy couple stood up, and laughed, only hav- ing eyes for the other.
Kipling felt his mouth curl up into a smile as the couple walked down the aisle, nodding to the small gathering of friends and family in attendance. Kipling’s hands froze when he saw who waited by the chapel doors.
Alyssa Adams. Officer Alyssa Adams.
The corner of his mouth lifted. He hadn’t expected her to be here today. It was ridiculous how happy he was to see her. Especially since she made no secret of the fact that she didn’t like him, his money, or anything about him. The way Kipling saw it, she presented him with a challenge and he never backed down from a challenge. But it was more than that. It was the way she never backed down from him

and how when she sparred verbally with him, it made him feel alive in a way he rarely felt.
He kept his eyes on her as he made his way down the aisle behind his brother. Though he had seen her wear a dress once before at the party announcing Keaton and Tilly’s engagement and the new division of Benedict Indus- tries, today she wore a more formal one. It hit above her knee, showing off her long legs and toned calves. He’d al- ways considered himself a leg man. Yes, breasts were great and he had no problem appreciating a woman’s backside, but legs . . .
There was just something about a woman’s legs. Espe- cially when they looked like Alyssa’s. Long and lean and strong. It was so easy to imagine them wrapped around his waist while he angled his hips to—
“Stop it.” His youngest brother, Keaton, punched his arm. “Seriously, man. What happened to your poker face?” They had made it out of the chapel and were waiting for the remaining guests to leave the church so they could
all walk to the reception area.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Kipling told Keaton. In truth, he shouldn’t be the least bit interested in the police officer. It seemed as if each time he saw her, she only gave him disturbing news about his family. Or worse yet, arrested him. He didn’t understand how he could pos- sibly find her attractive, but he did. Not only that, but he wanted her. Badly.
“You don’t know what I’m talking about.” His youngest brother snorted. “Yeah, right.”
Kipling shot him a look that would have stopped an- other man in his tracks, but that apparently didn’t work on younger brothers. No, the look didn’t have any sort of im- pact on Keaton, who kept right on talking.
“You know,” Keaton said, nodding toward Alyssa who

was currently chatting with Janie Roberts, her old partner, who would soon become Bea’s sister-in-law. “If you wanted, you could, I don’t know, ask her out or something.”
He thought about playing dumb, pretending he wasn’t sure who Keaton was talking about, but he’d never been one to play the fool and he sure as hell wasn’t going to start now.
“It’s not as simple as that,” Kipling told his younger brother. It was a pat answer, but the truth. Looking at Al- yssa while she spoke to her friend, he wished things were different. Damn, but he could watch her for hours. Today, there was very little to be seen of the straight-laced in- vestigator she was around him and he found the contrast mesmerizing. She talked with Janie using her entire body. She was so animated and her smile so genuine, he couldn’t look away. Not only that, but he’d always seen her with her hair pulled back in a ponytail and today it was free to dance around her shoulders in soft waves. The sunlight made the normal brown a plethora of colors: blond, red, and even hints of black.
Keaton narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms. “Why isn’t it that simple?”
“I’m not going to stand here and explain myself to you,” Kipling said. “You’re going to have to take my word for it.”
“If this is about that girl in college . . .” Keaton started, but stopped when Kipling raised his hand.
“Don’t go there,” Kipling warned his younger brother. “Not now. Not ever.”
He would live his life and never complain if no one ever brought up the girl he dated in college. The one he fell hard for. The one he planned to marry. The one who made a fool out of him.
His stomach twisted and he wondered if he’d ever think of her without wanting to throw up. He reminded himself

that at least he’d gotten out of the situation and hadn’t been stupid enough to elope. She’d actually suggested they do exactly that before they went to his house for Christmas break.
Even then, it appeared as if Keaton was going to argue with him. Fortunately, Tilly, his fiancée, came up to them and looped her arm through Keaton’s.
“Come on, you guys,” Tilly said. “The photographer wants to do some family shots.”
“Why do I have to get my picture taken?” Kipling mum- bled while straightening his tie. “It’s not my wedding.”
But he followed Keaton and Tilly to the front of the chapel anyway, unable to keep himself from looking over his shoulder at Alyssa one last time.

REVIEW:  DEADLY SECRET is the second full-length, and third instalment in Tara Thomas’s contemporary, adult SONS OF BROAD romantic suspense series. This is attorney’s Knox Benedict, and Bea Jacobs’ story line. DEADLY SECRET can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary but I recommend reading the stories in order as there is an ongoing and continuing plot throughout the series.

Told from several third person perspectives including Bea and Knox DEADLY SECRET continues to focus on the threats against the Benedict family, and their connections to an unknown source. Weeks earlier Bea Jacobs wed Knox Benedict in a whirlwind Vegas wedding but upon their return Bea received a series of threatening messages that force our heroine to walk away from the man that she loves. Fast forward to present day wherein the threats against our story line heroine begin to take on a more personal note, forcing Bea to go to the one man she was trying to protect. Enter Knox Benedict, Bea’s husband, and the man she has not stopped loving. What ensues is the protection and security of our story line heroine, and the potential fall-out as the enemy is closer than anyone could have imagined.

The actions of Bea Jacobs are questionable at best but nightmares, PTSD and continuing threats play a major role in our heroine’s decisions and the direction upon which she chooses to follow. All of the previous story line couples return including Janie and Brent from the introductory serial novellas; Keaton and Tilly, brother Kipling; housekeeper Lena; Officer Alyssa Adams; assassin Tom, and the story line antagonist- a man known only as The Gentleman.

DEADLY SECRET continues to untangle the mystery behind the threats against the Benedict siblings; their origins, some of the backstory, and history about a family mired in secrets, betrayal and vengeance. The Gentleman is determined to destroy the Benedicts including the women whom they love. Kaja Jade Mann returns as The Gentleman’s hired assassin, a reluctant assassin whose own life begins to unravel as she ventures closer to the truth about her past. Tara Thomas slowly and methodically answers some of the questions while adding to a growing list of the who, what and why. The premise is engaging and suspense filled; the characters are energetic and animated; the romance is a rekindling relationship between two people pulled apart by threats and intimidation-the $ex scenes are passionate and seductive. The quick jump between points of view is, at times disconcerting, as there is no break in between the opposing perspectives.

Bea had to get out of the conference room before the man across the table tried to kill her.

Logically, she told herself he wasn’t dangerous. Even though she knew better than to judge people based upon their appearance, the man in question was short, on the stocky side, and, unless he pulled a gun on her, she could probably take him, thanks to the self-defense course she’d completed last week. It was the pen he kept tapping on the table that tested her sanity. The tap, tap, tapthat wouldn’t stop and she couldn’t get out of her head because it brought back thoughts of the man who almost had killed her.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Sweat trickled down her spine.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Her stomach began to feel sour.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

She closed her eyes, took deep breaths, and tried everything she knew of to make it stop. None of it worked. Not counting backwards. Not running through multiplication tables. Not even picturing herself relaxing on a deserted beach. Damn it, she was going to have a full-blown panic attack sitting in the middle of her senior partner’s meeting with a client he wanted her to co-represent.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

She took another deep breath. This was not happening. She wasn’t going to let it. But her heart began to race and she knew she was fighting a losing battle.

“Ms. Jacobs?” Skip, the senior partner, asked. “Your thoughts?”

Shit. “I, um, agree with your analysis.”

The pen stopped tapping and she was able to suck in another breath. Deep even breaths. Surely the meeting wouldn’t go on much longer and she’d be able to get up and walk. Splash some water on her face and maybe go outside for some fresh air.

Skip raised an eyebrow. “Really? You were most forceful in your opposition yesterday.”

The pen started tapping once again.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

She was going to be sick. She pushed back from her chair and stood on wobbly legs. “If you’ll excuse me.”

Without waiting for a reply, she darted from the room as quickly as possible, managing not to crash into Vicky, the office admin, who was bringing coffee into the conference room.

“Ms. Jacobs?” Vicky called as she raced by.

Bea didn’t slow down or turn around. She made it to the bathroom and shut the door, sagging against it, and forcing herself to take deep breaths. For a brief second, she thought she was going to be fine, but the panic she’d tried to hold back clawed its way up her throat. Her stomach lurched in response and she stumbled forward, desperate to make it to a toilet before losing her breakfast.

After, she rinsed her mouth out and leaned her head against the cool tile on the wall. She was still breathing heavy and she balled her fists in defiance, even as her mind replayed the seconds leading up to her attack: the sudden shift in the air that alerted her something was wrong and the feel of rough hands pushing her against a brick wall. In what she thought was a cruel mind trick, all of her senses had been super-heightened and now, almost six weeks later, she could still feel him breathing on her, still smell the stench of human waste in the alley he dragged her into, and through it all, still hear the tick tick tick of his watch that haunted her.

She stood up with new determination. The assholes who hurt her weren’t going to win. She’d be damned if they were going to get the best of her.

If she had to force herself to listen to pen tapping for hours on end, she would beat this. Maybe she should get some professional help like they’d recommended at the hospital after her attack. At the time, she’d thought she’d be fine if she could only get home and she’d thrown away the business cards they’d given her.

Little did she know that getting home was only one step in the seemingly three thousand needed for recovery. And in no way had it ever crossed her mind that she’d still be having panic attacks weeks later. Knox would be upset if he knew.

Knox …

He was an entirely different problem. Her gaze dropped to her bare left hand and she had to squeeze her eyes closed so the tears that always seemed to follow thoughts of him didn’t fall. But trying not to think of his devilishly handsome grin, his tousled dirty blond hair, and his utterly devastating charm only made her think of them more.

Someone knocked on the door.

“Ms. Bea.”

It was Vicky, bless her heart.

“Just a minute.” Bea splashed water on her face and wiped her eyes. A quick glance in the mirror told her she looked like shit, but there was little she could do to fix it at this point.

“You okay?” Vicky asked when Bea finally opened the door.

“Getting that way.”

Vicky pressed her lips together. Probably because she knew a lie when she heard one. Bea wasn’t getting better. Some days she felt as if she were barely functioning. And it didn’t help that Vicky was a mother hen and had sharp eyes.

“I don’t feel so good,” Bea said. “I’m going to work from home. I’ll call Skip when I get there.”

Vicky nodded. “I’m going to let you go, but I don’t like you being alone so much.”

Once she made it home and she called and left a voice mail for Skip, she pulled on her pajamas and curled up on her couch with her comfy blanket. It was absurd to even have a blanket out this time of the year, much less to use one. But for some reason, it made her feel safe to have it wrapped around her. Silly, of course, the blanket being a thin piece of fabric.

It was probably because he gave it to her. She snorted at the way her brain worked. Of course it was because he gave it to her. For what other reason would she bring the soft material to her nose in order to see if some small trace of his scent still lingered there?

But the softest of fabric was nothing even close to him and she shrugged the blanket from her shoulders. She turned her laptop on so she wouldn’t think about him anymore, only to have the project she’d been working on with him before the accident pop up. She shook her head, hating that she now kept track of time and events that way.

The Johnson case? Oh, yes, that was before.

The Turner case, however, that was after.

Another thing she needed to take care of and fix. Thinking that way gave her attackers too much power over her, her life, and her future. She would stop that type of thinking today. Right this minute.

She thought about opening the file containing the project, but with the memory of her recent panic attack still fresh in her mind, she didn’t dare. Too afraid that thinking about anything having to do with the Benedicts would stir up a pot of trouble she wasn’t prepared to deal with.

It shouldn’t bother her not to work on the case. After all, it wasn’t a case for work. It was a personal matter, from Knox. He asked her privately to look into some issues his family’s company had years ago. His older brother, Kipling, had thought the human resources records looked off. She had gone to work, looking into the personnel files he gave her for any kind of clue she could find, and in the end, she got attacked for it.

That last bit had come to her days later in the hospital. When she remembered the man she associated with the ticking telling her to stay away from Knox. Or else. She still recalled the cold sweat that covered her body the moment she remembered and the way goose bumps rippled her skin. But most of all, she remembered the despair she felt, knowing she had to end her relationship with Knox. Because she knew the next time she met the ticking man, he wouldn’t leave her alive. And Knox would be his next target.

Her phone rang and she grabbed it, thinking it was Skip.

“Hello,” she said, not looking to see who it was.

“Ms. Jacobs, this is Mandy at Dean Family Law. Your divorce papers are here and ready to be signed.”

* * *

Someone else might have described it as being watched. Jade was being hunted. Watched was much too mild of a term to describe what he was currently doing to her. There was no doubt in her mind, she was being hunted. She was the prey. He was the lion.

Perhaps if she were smart, she’d have stayed away from South Carolina, but she’d learned early in life that running from your problems got you nowhere. In fact, that had been what killed her mother. When she had time to think about it, the irony didn’t escape her.

The Gentleman had found her after her mother’s death and now it seemed he’d be the instrument for hers.

Did she hate him? Of course.

But without him, would she be alive?

The answer to that only made her hate him more. But that hate did something she didn’t think he’d counted on. It moved her forward. Consumed her with the need to bring him down. And that’s why she’d come back.

Now, if she could only stay alive to see her plan finished.

* * *

Knox Benedict knew he was pushing his luck with the Charleston Police Department, but surely they had more information than they were telling.

“Come on,” he told the lead investigator, Alyssa Adams. “You have to have more than you’re letting on.” After all, she’d been involved in every aspect of the threats directed to the Benedict family.

“Even if I did, Mr. Benedict,” she said. “I’d hardly share it with you.”

What Knox needed was his older brother, Kipling. Out of the three Benedict brothers, Kipling was the player and he’d often got into verbal sparring matches with Officer Adams a few months ago when she was investigating a series of murders that touched the Benedict family. Hell, she’d arrested Kipling for one of them. Of course, all charges had been dropped, but still, to say his family had history with the police officer was an understatement.

Besides, she’d shared information before. Why wouldn’t she do the same and fill him in with the latest on how close they were to finding Bea’s attacker? He’d worked in Afghanistan during the summers while he was in college. One of the skills he’d honed while there was IT security. Or to be more exact, how to get around it. He didn’t want to hack into the police department’s systems, but he would if he kept getting the run around.

“You do not have access to privileged information in an active police investigation.”

“So you’re admitting that you do have more information, but you’re just not sharing it at the moment.”

He thought he had her until she gave him a sarcastic smile. “And here I was under the impression it was your wife who was the practicing attorney and not you.”

His smile faltered for a moment, but he finally decided she’d misspoke. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You know when I first investigated the attack on Bea, I did a thorough background on her.” She said it so matter-of-factly, he almost didn’t grasp her meaning.

“You mean, you knew? This entire time? And you didn’t say anything?” He was stumbling over his words, but he didn’t care. He was shocked to find out that she might be privy to information he and Bea thought was private.

“That you and Bea are married?”

He was so stunned, he didn’t answer her question, but his shocked expression must have been the confirmation she needed.

“I only reveal what is needed, Mr. Benedict. And your marital status had no bearing on the case.”

“In that case,” he said, “is it safe for me to assume that you will not divulge our secret?”

“Absolutely, Mr. Benedict.”

He thought so, but he had learned the hard way it was never a good idea to assume anything.

“I’m not getting anything out of you today, am I?” he asked.

“Or tomorrow or the day after.”

Not ready to give up, he flashed her a smile. “How about I invite you over to Benedict House for dinner?”

She raised an eyebrow.

“I could make sure Kipling’s there,” he added.

She laughed. “That especially won’t work.”

“Then I’ll make sure he’s not there.”

“Good-bye, Mr. Benedict.”

Her tone was light, but her meaning was clear. He knew better than to keep trying. Best to wait for another day. He tipped an imaginary hat and left.

Once he made it to his car and pulled out of the parking lot, he headed in the direction of Bea’s office. She would hate it if she knew, but he drove or walked by her office or apartment at least once a day. He couldn’t say exactly why he started. He never spoke to her and rarely saw her. Yet somehow just being in her space seemed important. Even if it was an odd one-sided attachment. He couldn’t help but wonder if she ever thought of him. What he wouldn’t give to know exactly what she was thinking.

He couldn’t accept that their marriage was over. How could he when she’d not once given him a reason for why she felt that way? Even though Bea had been very adamant the few times they had spoken since her accident, he wasn’t ready to give up hope yet. He’d never thought he’d find love, not the all-encompassing type that he had found with Bea. As such, he could not imagine not living without it.

For now, he would give her space. He’d only surrendered the battle, he had no intention of losing the war.

He drove by her office, but didn’t see her car. Pushing back the uneasy feeling that always seemed to be simmering just under the surface since her attack, he told himself he wouldn’t worry until he had a reason to do so.

A short drive down the road and five minutes later, he should have been able to relax since her car was in its spot. He pulled into an empty spot and debated on knocking on her door. Just a glimpse of her would do. Even if all she did was tell him to go away and not come back like she had the last time.

He decided not to knock on her door in the hope that if he abided by her wishes maybe she’d come to her senses quicker. It still made no sense why she didn’t want him. He was her husband, he was supposed to protect her.

He remembered when they had first met. A local corporation didn’t like the Benedict Industries plans for the expansion of their docks, and had threatened legal action. Knox had spoken to the family lawyer, Derrick, who had assured him that the corporation didn’t have a case. Knox requested a meeting with them and told them to bring their attorney. He knew he was screwed when Bea Jacobs walked into the room.

Her reputation had preceded her and she was truly a sight to behold. In under two minutes, it became very clear that this was not an open-and-shut case. In fact, it soon became a real possibility that the expansion would be shut down. Sure she was beautiful, but she was also brilliant. When he’d finally made it home after that first meeting, he put his computer hacking skills to work and discovered she also did a lot of pro bono work. He ended up falling hard and fast. It took a lot of compromise and considerable expense, but an agreement was eventually reached, and the expansion proceeded.

He knew the smart thing to do would be to leave her alone. But he found he couldn’t do it. He showed up at her office, with coffee made just the way she liked, and asked her out. He thought she’d be impressed that he’d paid such close attention to her. He’d thought wrong. She turned him down, but he was persistent. Even though he believed she only went out with him to get him to leave her alone.

And yet, much to his surprise, one date led to two, two led to three, and after that he stopped counting. He couldn’t pinpoint exact when he had realized that he couldn’t live without her anymore. Yet he remembered very well the day he had asked her to marry him. He wasn’t sure who was more surprised she said yes, her or him.

After she’d accepted him, they both stood there silent for several long seconds, then they both started laughing. The laughing ended in a kiss. But all too soon reality descended upon them. For starters, her father hated him. He’d made that very clear the only time they had seen each other. Usually the Benedict name opened doors, but her father only saw him as a wealthy and reckless playboy, unworthy to serve soup to the homeless. Not only that, but Knox wasn’t sure how his family would react to her being his wife. Especially after the expansion case.

With the potential of her father’s ability to create a shit storm neither one of them could withstand, coupled with his family’s ability to do the same, they decided to keep their marriage secret. They went to Vegas next weekend, and eloped.

Neither of them had ever regretted not telling others. Or that was what he’d thought. Now he wasn’t sure.

REVIEW: DARKEST NIGHT is the first full length instalment in Tara Thomas’ (aka Tara Sue Me) contemporary, adult SONS OF BROAD romantic suspense series. This is Keaton Benedict and Tilly Brock’s story line. DARKEST night can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary. There is a three –part novella serial-Shattered Fear, Hidden Fate, Twisted End-that introduces some of the characters and story behind the Sons of Broad series. Tilly Brock was first introduced in the Sons of Broad serial.

Told from several third person points of view including Tilly and Keaton DARKEST NIGHT continues to focus on ‘The Gentleman’s ‘ quest for revenge against a number of citizens in Charleston, and his latest target is our story line heroine, a part time bar-waitress, and university student whose connection to The Gentleman is currently unknown. While working late night at the local watering hole, Tilly will come face to face with her past, a childhood friend whose father destroyed her family and ruined the reputation of a very good man. Enter Keaton Benedict, heir to the Benedict Industries and the man with whom Tilly will fall in love. What ensues is the quick building, rekindling romance between Tilly and Keaton, and the on-going fall-out as a series of brutal murders, all with connections to our story line couple, find Tilly the next intended target.

DARKEST NIGHT follows several paths including the awkward introduction of a potential threat to our story line couple but a threat that reveals a sordid past that may have a close connection to the Benedict family-a connection that may be alive and well.

The relationship between Tilly and Keaton is one of second chances but there was no palpable sexual attraction. The relationship felt impersonal and detached as though the couple were only going through the motions in a dispassionate display of neutral devotion. In this I struggled with the overall relationship.

We are introduced to Keaton’s brothers Kipling and Knox; officer Alyssa Adams, attorney Bea Jacobs; socialite Elise Germain; hired assassin Jade, as well as a large assortment of secondary characters including a pair of exotic dancers in the wrong place at the wrong time; and the story line antagonist- a man known only as The Gentleman.

DARKEST NIGHT is a story of suspense but got lost in the numerous changes in points of view throughout each chapter. The constant jump in perspectives was not delineated or noted, therefore the reader must be observant in order to keep track of the alternating positions. The premise is intriguing; the writing style, language and text are uncomplicated; the romance is stilted and lacked the palpable sexual energy of most romantic suspense story lines.

Two scantily clad women strutted out onto the stage.
Keaton was too far away to see details. All he could make out were tiny bikini tops and even tinier thongs. Blondes. And pretty enough to make any red-blooded man fantasize about ripping the scraps of fabric off them. A movement to the side of the stage caught his eye. A server. He only saw her profile, but there was something about her.
He slid off the barstool to get a closer look.
“Hey, man,” Michael called after him. “Where are you going?”
Keaton didn’t reply.
“Where’s Benedict going?” he heard someone ask. “He’s interested in a dancer? Here?” someone else asked.
Keaton shook his head; it wasn’t a dancer that captured his attention. He wasn’t a stranger to the numerous clubs around the city that catered to wealthy men and their carnal needs. However, he’d never singled out any particular woman while at one. After all, he’d al- ways said, one half-naked woman was just as good as another. As made evident by the number of times his picture was in the society pages, but never with the same woman twice.
And yet, here he was, eyes fixed on the petite waitress at the side of the stage, currently trying to blend into the background and not take away from the duo on the stage. It was a horrible failure. He wasn’t sure why the management even felt the need to put anyone onstage with her working here. How could anyone look at those two with her in the room?
She moved with a grace that made the two blondes look like ducks swimming alongside a swan. She stretched out her hand to pass a glass to a man sitting on the far inside of a booth. Everyone in her vicinity turned to watch her lithe body.
“Drooling over a topless dancer?” Michael asked, coming up behind him. “I have to say, I’m a bit surprised. They look a bit rough.”
“Not a dancer,” Keaton let slip before he could stop himself.
Michael moved to stand beside him and followed his line of sight. His low whistle signaled he saw the woman in question. “Hot damn. Wait until a certain blonde hears about this. I’m sure Miss Elise Germain will love the fact that her intended is drooling over a half-naked barmaid.”
“Shut the fuck up.” Keaton didn’t shift his attention from the goddess taking drink orders. “I’m not engaged.” “Please,” Michael’s voice dripped with sarcasm. “You two have been promised to each since you were what? Fifteen?”
Keaton mumbled a curse under his breath, but right now, he couldn’t focus on anything other than the serving siren. It sounded so crazy, he couldn’t even verbalize it, but he thought he knew her from somewhere. Some- thing about the way she moved called to him. Pulled him forward for a better look.
He took another step toward her.
She was magnificent. And the way she moved continued to captivate the audience near her. Keaton’s eyes traveled over her body, taking in as many details as possible: her light brown skin, the curve of her hips, and the slope of her breasts covered by a tight cropped shirt. He knew they would be oh-so-soft to touch. His eyes drifted higher at the same time she turned her head his way and he froze.
Tilly.
He couldn’t breathe. It couldn’t be.
What was she doing in Charleston? The last he’d heard, her family had moved to Texas. Granted, they’d both been fourteen at the time, but he’d never forgot- ten the day he’d got home from school, walked into the eerily quiet kitchen, and discovered his life had changed forever.
Tilly always came over to his house after school to help him with his homework. Usually her mother would come over with her and gossip with his mom. But there was nothing that day. He’d looked out the back door to get a peek of their house and gasped. There were men all over the yard, carrying furniture.
He’d run back inside and up the stairs to his mother’s room and, with a stomach filled with dread, asked where Mama Ann and Tilly were. His mother arched a perfectly shaped eyebrow. She didn’t like that her children called their neighbor Mama Ann, but every- one called her that. It was just her personality. She was so kind and loving, the name came naturally.
“They’re moving to Texas,” she said, and his world shifted out of focus.
“Why?” he managed to croak out. Texas was so far away. It made no sense why they would move away from their family like that and so suddenly.
“It’s been discovered that Mr. Brock has been embezzling money from your father.”
“What?” He couldn’t believe it. Not Tilly’s dad. He was stealing from them? Something didn’t sound right. His mother gave him a sad smile. “I’m afraid he was caught red-handed. The Brock family’s basically ruined now. Best they move and try to start over.”
His parents had always joked that he and Tilly would get married one day. Everyone talked about it and he didn’t even care because Tilly was smart and pretty. The week before, he’d kissed her for the first time. Her lips had been soft and sweet, and he’d looked forward to kissing them over and over. How could he kiss her if she were in Texas?
“Your father’s going to promote Howard Germain.
Isn’t his daughter in your class, too?”
Elise. Tilly’s best friend. Or was. He felt sick. He mumbled a half-intelligible answer to his mom and ran down the stairs to the living room. He had to call Tilly. Had to talk to her, even if it was only to say good-bye. But their phone had already been disconnected and when he went to their house, the men moving all the furniture told him they’d already left.

Tilly Brock put on her best plastic smile and muttered a soft, “Excuse me, please,” to the man blocking her path to her customer. She recognized the move for what it was: an attempt to make her reach across him. Two more months. Two more months. She grit her teeth and made sure the men saw just enough of her cleavage as she handed the drink to the waiting customer.
“Thank you, darling,” he said, eyes firmly planted on her chest, never once looking her in the eyes. “Why ain’t someone as pretty as you up onstage?”
Like she didn’t hear that ten times a night. Her mother might not roll over in her grave at the thought of her daughter serving drinks at a gentlemen’s club, but Tilly knew she’d come back from the dead for the sole purpose of telling her how disappointed she was if she even thought about dancing topless.
“Two left feet,” she told the guy instead.
“Trust me.” His laugh gave her chills. “It ain’t your feet we’re interested in.”
Two more months. I can do two more months.
Onstage, the dance was almost over. One of the blond twins glared at her and in doing so, tripped and almost fell. Several men booed. The other twin shot her a look that told Tilly they were blaming everything on her. Oh well, what else was new. It wasn’t a day that ended in “y” if she didn’t piss off the Wonder Twins.
She gathered several empty glasses and nodded as a few drink orders were given. Her tray was heavy, but she thought she could make it back to the bar. She turned that way and suddenly felt someone’s eyes drilling holes into her from the back of the room. Out of habit, she lifted her head to try and find who was watching her so intensely.
She scanned the crowd, but no one looked out of place. Then she saw him, standing slightly off to the side, watching her with an easy confidence, but with a tilt of his head that somehow seemed familiar. He recognized her at the same instant she recognized him.
Keaton Benedict.
Her tray and glasses fell to the floor.

•••••••••

REVIEW: SHATTERED FEAR is first of three parts in the introductory story line of Tara Thomas’ SONS OF BROAD romantic, suspense series. This is police officer /investigator Janie Roberts, and wealthy playboy philanthropist Brent Taylor’s story line.

Told from several third person points of view including Janie and Brent SHATTERED FEAR is part one of a three-part serial that focuses on a potential serial killer, and a number of missing and murdered young women in the Charleston area. Police officer Janie Roberts is sent undercover at a local bar where most of the murdered women had last been seen but falling for her number one suspect found our heroine fired before she had a chance to set things in motion. With wealthy philanthropic playboy Brent Taylor by her side, Janie becomes the target of a killer who set his sights on the woman sent to take him down.

The relationship between Brent and Janie is quick to build; an immediate attraction that places our heroine in direct conflict with the demands of her job but a job that she no longer is able to perform. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive.

SHATTERED FEAR is a quick and thrilling read that sets up the premise and introduces some of the characters in Tara Thomas’ (aka Tara Sue Me) new SONS OF BROAD romance series including Brent’s half-sister attorney Bea Jacobs; bar waitress Tilly Brock; fellow detective and Janie’s friend Alyssa Adams and her boyfriend Mac; and their boss Officer Martin. The requisite evil has yet to be identified but there is more than one player threatening the lives of the people in Charleston, and their purpose unknown. SHATTERED FEAR ends on a cliffhanger-you have been warned.

REVIEW:HIDDEN FATE is the second of three parts in the introductory story line of Tara Thomas’ (aka Tara Sue Me) SONS OF BROAD romantic, suspense series. This is police officer /investigator Janie Roberts, and wealthy playboy philanthropist Brent Taylor’s continuing story line. HIDDEN FATE should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately following the events of part one Shattered Fear.

NOTE: If you have not read part one Shattered Fear, there may be some spoilers in my review.

Told from several third person points of view including Janie and Brent HIDDEN FAT is part two of a three-part serial that focuses on a potential serial killer, and a number of missing and murdered young women in the Charleston area. Former police officer Janie Roberts has been targeted by a potential serial killer-a killer that seems all to familiar to our story line heroine. From Charleston to Washington DC, Janie and her new beau Brent Taylor will find themselves the victim of a stalker who knows a little too much about their whereabouts, and their daily destinations. What ensues are the on-going threats against Janie Roberts, and the fall out when Janie becomes the captive of a once-friendly face.

HIDDEN FATE is another quick read; a suspenseful build up that follows a madman as he is forced to make good on a promise to ‘The Gentleman’ in charge. The premise is intriguing and engaging; the romance continues to develop towards a happily ever after. HIDDEN FATE ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

TWISTED END
(Sons of Broad .7)
by Tara Thomas
Genre: adult, contemporary, romantic, suspense

Amazon.com / Amazon.ca / B&N / KOBO / Chapters Indigo /

ABOUT THE BOOK: Release Date February 20, 2018

Welcome to the sultry streets of Charleston, where simmering desire and dark danger rule…

First comes desire.
Then comes love.
But Janie and Brent need to stop the man out to ruin them,

Before they can live happily ever after

••••••••••••

REVIEW: TWISTED END is the third of three parts in the introductory story line of Tara Thomas’ SONS OF BROAD romantic, suspense series. This is police officer /investigator Janie Roberts, and wealthy playboy philanthropist Brent Taylor’s continuing story line. TWISTED END should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately following the events of part two HIDDEN FATE

NOTE: if you have not read the first two serialized instalments there may be some spoilers in my review.

Told from several third person perspectives including Janie and Brent TWISTED END is the conclusion to a three-part serialized story line focusing on the take down of a serial killer targeting young women in the Charleston area. With Janie Roberts missing, her best friend and fellow police officer Alyssa Adams, along with Janie’s boyfriend Brent Taylor, discover the true identity of the man stalking our story line heroine. With the killer one step ahead, Brent and Alyssa track down a man who is more than familiar to the story line characters. What ensues is the search and rescue of Janie Roberts, and the potential fall out as one man goes down while another remains on the run.

TWISTED END is a very quick read; a lively, action-packed, intriguing conclusion to the introductory story line that introduces the players in a game of cat and mouse. Although the identity of ‘The Gentleman’ in charge has yet to be revealed, my suspicions run towards a prominent figure in the Charleston area- a man who will continue to target and terrorize the local female inhabitants. The premise is energetic; the characters are animated; the romance is fated towards a happily ever after. The identity of the killer is easily deduced early on in the series; the identity of ‘The Gentleman’ in charge is an on-going puzzle but I have my suspicions. The series continues with Tilly Brock’s story DARKEST NIGHT (February 27, 2018).

I will add, that in all honesty, I am not a fan of serialized novels. It is difficult to comment for any serialized story line, when there is little to no difference between each progressive instalment on the author’s writing style, world building etc. A serialized novel is ONE book that has been divided into several instalments with each successive instalment furthering the story-thusly-writing a myriad of reviews for a partial story tends to focus on the events and not on any particular changes to writing skill, structure and sound.
